Second Language Learning Essay
My seminar provided an overview of chapter 4– explaining second language learning. During my
introduction, key points from each of the 5 perspectives were discussed. The cognitive perspective
was given priority as it contained many subcategories within itself. This section also allowed my
group mates to connect theory and practice of second language learning. My group mates were able
to connect to the noticing hypothesis, processability theory and the three principles of practice
through their own personal experiences while learning a second language. The first discussion
question asked my group members to evaluate their own understanding of how language learning
occurs and compare it with the perspectives we covered. The second discussion question provided
them a chance to assess each perspective and think of one weakness and one strength for each.
Overall if I were to re–do my seminar, I would like to provide more attention to the other
perspectives. I would add more discussion questions in order to stimulate more in–depth
discussions. Similarly, adding supplemental information from an outside source to further discussion
and connect the theories to pedagogy. Additionally, I would create an activity that focused more on
teaching of a second language and how these theories have influenced the current practices used.

The Language Of Vocabulary Instruction
This study examined the influence of the language of vocabulary instruction in English compared to
instruction in both English and Spanish in Spanish speaking pre–schoolers. This article questions
whether or not dual language learners (DDLs) in pre–school will acquire superior gains in English
and Spanish receptive vocabulary after receiving a culturally and linguistically responsive (CLR)
instructional modality in both English and Spanish, compared to an English culturally responsive
(ECR) modality. The study also examines whether English and Spanish receptive vocabulary gains
will remain 3 weeks post treatment of the CLR instructional modality in comparison to the ECR
modality (Mendez, Crais, Castro, & Kainz, 2015).
Forty–two preschoolers whom had a primary language of Spanish and secondary language of
English were recruited for this study. The participants included sixteen boys and twenty–six girls,
with a mean age of 5.14 months. All participants spoke minimal English and were enrolled in an
English–only classroom. The children were placed randomly in either the CLR group or the
comparison group, ECR. Both groups used the same vocabulary instructional approach, with only
the language of vocabulary instruction being different (Mendez et al., 2015). Receptive vocabulary

My Reflection On My Ethnographic Study
For my ethnographic study I chose to interview my schoolmate about her language learning
experiences which relate to her culture. The main focuses of this ethnographic study are to enhance
the teaching quality and facilitate positive curriculum development through the interview. Last week
I had an opportunity to interview a schoolmate of mine, a doctoral degree student who studies in
TESOL program at Alliant International University. The name of my schoolmate called April and
she is a Taiwanese. April is a multi–lingual who masters four kinds of foreign language: English,
Japanese, Spanish and Taiwanese. Except for her mother–tongue language Taiwanese, English is the
one she spent most time on it. She has been learning this language for more than nine years. The
first time she contacted with English was in her childhood. She studied the language just for the fun
of it and she was really interested in games in the process of study. Her first English teacher was a
Malaysian woman. One left a great impression on her was that the place for the class was in a
church. She studied English with a friend of her neighbor in the church for a year. So far she still
missing the time she learned English at the church. Because of the development of foreign trade,

Language is best seen as a five–pronged system made up of these things: Phonology – Sounds that
are combined to make words; Lexis – Which are words; Orthography – Spelling rules that
standardise the way in which specific words are written; Syntax – Grammar – Rules that govern the
order of words to form sentences; Semantics – The meanings of individual words as well as phrases,
clauses, sentences and texts (Gardner, 2017, slideshow topic 1, slide 16). Without these five basic

Bilingual education is an educational system in which students are taught in both their native and
international language. It has been practiced in various forms in different countries of the world.
There are still conflicts between people in case of bilingual education because some people prefer
bilingual education whereas, some refuse it, depending upon their own thoughts and reasons and
they are still arguing about it. Whatever the argument is, bilingual education should be prioritized,
especially in the country like United States where thousands of immigrants from all over the world
are welcomed every year, because being linguistic has observable practical benefit in an increasingly
globalized world rather than being monolingual. Bilingual education also helps maintaining the
fluency of the native language, improving the academic proficiency of the second language learned,

The next point Lewis makes is, "As the Western European Empires faded, Middle Eastern anti–
Americanism was attributed to other, more specific causes: economic exploitation,....the support of

Jamaican Creole (JC) is an oral language, Mair (2003) provides a distinction between the two
through orthography and phonology, where JC is spoken and Standard Jamaican English (SJE) is
written. Even though English remains the official language, JC is predominantly used with in the
home by minimum wage earners. There is an ongoing project known as the bilingual Education
project now being conducted in selected primary schools in recognition of the need to introduce

warring parties. Since women have a tendency to operate from a nonviolent arena, their inclusion in
the peace building efforts are necessary to eliminate the violence that is ripping these two countries
apart. Women are generally viewed as keepers of the domestic domain, thus, they stand to lose their
very foundation if peace cannot be achieved. At a time when the conflict between these groups has
reached an all–time high, it is of upmost importance for women to help pave the way to culminate a

Cooperative learning is part of a group of teaching/learning techniques where students interact with
each other to acquire and practice the elements of a subject matter and to meet common learning
goals (Macpherson, 2000, p.1). In other words, it is a learning method that consists of groups of
students coming together for a common purpose. Cooperative learning has been the center of
worldwide attention because it has been shown to have strong effects on student learning, as well as
other positive outcomes (Tran, 2013, p. 101). This paper explains the core elements of cooperative
learning method.
Cooperative learning is defined in Tran's article (2013) as "the instructional use of small groups so
that students work together to maximize their own and one another's learning" (as cited in Johnson
& Johnson, 1990c). So, in this learning method, the instructors rely heavily on students' efforts
within their groups. Johnson and Johnson (2002) believes that students are given two responsibilities

Oral Corrective Feedback Corrective feedback is defined as a 'reply to learner expressions having an
error' and its major role is to offer guidance and insight to teachers on what they need to provide to
their learners in order to promote growth and comprehension of the second language. This paper
seeks to identify the various types of oral corrective feedback through studying of previous
literatures published on corrective feedback which are broadly classified into two categories:
prompts and reformulations. Despite the existence of shortcomings associated with corrective
feedback, the receptiveness of students to corrective feedback indicates its significance in enhancing
the learning of second languages. According to Lyster and Ranta, six different types of CF exist but
these can further be broadly classified into two categories; prompts and reformulations (37).
Prompts include different types of signals that push a learner to self–repair. These prompt signals
include metalinguistic clues, repetition, elicitation, and clarification requests. Reformulations, on the
other hand, include explicit correction and recasts, which provide the learner with target
formulations of their non–target output. Moreover, corrective feedback could be classified as either
implicit or explicit. Recasts are on many occasions considered implicit, but can also become explicit
due to certain characteristics such as length, linguistic target, and changes made to the original
utterance.

During my introduction, key points from each of the 5 perspectives were discussed. The cognitive perspective was given priority as it contained many subcategories within itself. This section also allowed my group mates to connect theory and practice of second language learning. My group mates were able to connect to the noticing hypothesis, processability theory and the three principles of practice through their own personal experiences while learning a second language. The first discussion question asked my group members to evaluate their own understanding of how language learning occurs and compare it with the perspectives we covered. The second discussion question provided them a chance to assess each perspective and think of one weakness and one strength for each. Overall if I were to re–do my seminar, I would like to provide more attention to the other perspectives. I would add more discussion questions in order to stimulate more in–depth discussions. Similarly, adding supplemental information from an outside source to further discussion and connect the theories to pedagogy.
