1. The Ideal Qualities of a Leader Essay
1 – What are the ideal knowledge, skills and attributes of a leader in my area of work?
Introduction
Leadership is a topic that has been widely studied and worthy of great interest because of its
impact on both individuals and society as a whole. Exactly what constitutes a strong leader is a
topic of debate. The term may conjure images of victorious historical figureheads such as Julius
Caesar or Genghis Khan, but more subtle examples are found in everyday life, wherever there is
group activity. Studies have identified definite styles and theories which define good leadership in
any capacity.
In order to explore the attributes of a successful leader, it is first necessary to define leadership and
discuss what makes an individual succeed in...show more content...
Rarely is leadership mentioned without management with a continuing controversy about the
difference between leadership and management. It is evident that a person can be a leader without
being a manager, and a person can be a manager without leading. Nobody has proposed that
managing and leading are equivalent, but the degree of overlap is a point of debate (Yukl, 2010).
The difference between management and leadership may be subjective. Both involve deciding what
needs to be done, developing the capacity to do it, and ensuring that it is done. However, while
management is concerned with order and consistency, leadership is concerned with change.
Therefore it could be added that management is doing things right whereas leadership is doing the
right things (Hayes 2010a cited Kotter 1990).
What is good leadership?
It is within our nature to know a good leader when we come across one, as they appeal to our
instincts. It is perhaps more difficult to define the elements that make them successful. The
simplest measure of good leadership may be success. Where a good leader succeeds, a poor leader
would fail. It is therefore possible to identify good traits of leadership by looking at examples of
both successful and failed leadership. Most researchers evaluate leadership effectiveness in terms of
the consequences of influence on a single

both a personal and professional level. A leader has to develop diverse response in order to cope
with crisis management. Aims & Objectives: The aim and objective of this literature review was

in the modern day organizational leaders for example, managers and supervisors. Findings: The
personality traits of a good leader have a somewhat diverse focus. It is mainly concerned with the

traits in any leader. Leader should be trained to rise above other people's difficulties when
conveying a message. One study proposed that people compose their reflected best–self portrait
through social experiences that draw on intra psychic and interpersonal resources. The trait theory of
leadership is founded on the traits of numerous successful and unsuccessful leaders and is employed
to forecast leadership efficiency.

4. The Qualities And Traits Of Leaders Essay
2The qualities and traits of leaders
A number of leadership traits almost come directly from within. These are the qualities that might be
harder to train, but which make leading other people smoother.
Committed
A good leader has to show commitment. Fulfilling your vision won't happen overnight and you
need to be able to convince everyone else that you won't disappear when things get tough. If you
make a promise, you need to keep it. You can't just preach about achieving A, B and C, but you
need to show that you are actually going to do it.
Commitment matters for two reasons. First, when you show commitment you help build trust. The
team and anyone involved with the project will be able to trust your word. Trust will keep work
morale up and help you achieve objectives faster since people don't need to second–guess what your
objectives are. But furthermore, the second aspect of commitment is about setting an example. As
mentioned throughout the article, leadership is about setting an example and if you show
commitment to your word, your subordinates will be inspired to stick to their promises. Using your
own example of hard work, you will ensure the people around you feel motivated to do the same
thing.
Passionate
Passion should be at the heart of everything you do. It doesn't matter whether you are a leader of a
multibillion company or a lumberjack, without passion, you won't achieve success. You can
understand its importance when you view it as the fuel to your truck.

5. Leadership Qualities Of A Good Leader Essay
Throughout the last few weeks, we've discussed numerous ideas and concepts depicting various
leadership qualities, and how they apply to a work center or organization. A good leader will be
able to effectively use interchangeable combinations of these concepts. As NCOs we strive to be
good leaders; authentic and honest leadership is hard to come by. We need to look at ourselves, put
ego aside, and take the time to actively work on improving weaknesses. My vision statement is,
"To create and promote good, sustainable leadership for our future, and strive to grow airman with
the same integrity and followership traits emitted by those before them." In order to do this, you
must truly know yourself. It's imperative that you are aware of your values, understand your
tendencies and favorable leadership styles. I've learned that I favor MBE–A, prefer the creator role,
and that I fit in the mildly adaptive category. Taking tests such as the ones we did in class will
help identify strengths and weaknesses. No test will ever truly pinpoint the person you are, they
are tools to point you in the right direction; although some are remarkably accurate. Understanding
these roles will allow me to adapt to situations and alter my approach when necessary. Knowing
yourself is the baseline to being an effective leader. It will open your eyes and allow you to take
charge of your physical, emotional, spiritual and social health. You must start with yourself if you
want to positively

6. Essay on Traits of an Effective Leader
In order to be an effective leader there are traits involved as well as a competency to lead. Failure
to take into account the personality traits a successful leader should possess can lead to employing
a leader who is ineffective. Many times people are promoted into leadership positions due to the
longevity of their tenure with a company or how they perform in their current positions. As a
member of the management team of Dr. Pepper Snapple Group I have observed that there is more
to becoming a successful leader than experience and tenure. We are managing various people who
possess different personalities and work ethics and we are constantly adjusting our leadership skills
to meet the diversity of the workforce. It is in this realization...show more content...
We were set back a month because of my slip and it cost many hours of overtime to undo what I
had done. Everyone was willing to work with me and fix the mistake after I displayed that I could
be honest and admit to my mistakes. It is this kind of honesty that a leader should possess. The
whole point of leadership is figuring out how to get from where you are to where you need to be.
When a leader doesn't have a vision for the future, it can cause the organization to become
stagnant and miss out on great opportunities for growth and change. A leader must set aside some
time for planning and thinking about the future. Organizations, mine included, expect leaders to
be visionaries and propel their organizations forward. I must submit quarterly assessments to my
superior in regards to which processes we need to change and why as well as how this change
will impact our future. In Dr. Pepper Snapple Group this is called forecasting for the future and in
order to be effective it forces you to take a close look at your current situation. Once you have a
vision for the future you have to share it with your followers whether it may come to fruition or
not. Many leaders hesitate to share their vision because of fear of failure. This is a legitimate
concern. However, people need to know that a leader has a strong vision for the future and a strong
plan for going forward (Van Vugt, 2006). Leaders run into trouble sharing their

As a growing debate, the question at hand is whether great leaders are born with specific leadership
traits, or if one can be taught certain traits over time. According to (Wikipedia.com) the approach of
listing leadership qualities, often termed "trait theory of leadership", assumes certain traits or
characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. I believe that leadership traits such as honest,
competent, initiative, inspiring, hardworking, intelligent, and the ability to lead the masses, are
some of the leadership traits one should possess. Within this paper, I will examine the overall

Leadership is an action not a position. With the proper personality, a leader can accomplish many
things like knowledge of the organization. Being able to handle all type of situations shows great
leadership traits. According to (Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy) the adjustment dimension of the Five
Factor Model of Personality "is concerned with how people react to stress, failure, or personal
criticism" and it is important for leaders to develop their response to this dimension. Leader trait
research examined the physical, mental, and social characteristics of individuals. In general, these
studies simply looked for significant associations between individual traits and measures of
leadership effectiveness. Physical traits such as height, mental traits such as intelligence, and social
traits such as personality attributes were all subjects of empirical research. (LEADERSHIP

When reflecting throughout America's history, two people in particular exemplified the essence of
true leadership traits, Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. While others displayed a vast
variety of traits, Martin Luther King Jr. as well as Nelson Mandela displayed traits of leadership
that stood the test of time, and while today, their traits still influence, as well as affect people in
today's society. Throughout his time as political activist, as well as South Africa's first African

Leadership is a characteristic that encompasses numerous qualities that are unique to each
individual. Over the years I have learned what it means to be a leader and to posses these
qualities. I have also learned that each individual has a unique perspective on what it means to be
a leader and this perspective is developed over years of failures and success. One of the most
important qualities a leader must posses is confidence. Confidence is important because a leader
must have faith in every decision that is being made as well as being able to make clear and
concise decisions on the spot. This quality is also a reflection of the individual and it is necessary
possess because it also gives others confidence to follow any actions or decisions needed to
accomplish the task at hand. As an artist I am naturally introverted and initially was not drawn to

quickly developed strong problem solving and decision making abilities. These are important for
any leader to possess because nothing ever goes as smooth as intended especially in a fraternity

Leadership:
Qualities of a good leader
There are qualities that make a good leader these are being able to undertake the decision making
processes; using various different types of techniques to help motivated them team; being able to
give feedback to teammates or peers, without being specific using questions, such as "What angle
should your feet be facing?"; a leader has to be able to establish relationships amongst the team, as
these relationships are interpersonal; finally a leader needs to be able to confidentially direct a
team or a group. However, there are two theories the trait theory and social learning theory which
describes the qualities of a good leader. The trait theory suggests that leaders are born with the natural
leadership qualities, such as good communication skills and enthusiasm. Whereas, the social
learning theory suggests that the leader learn to use their skills to meet the current situation.
(Teachpe.com, 2016) For example, Team GB may have some natural born leaders that are in
charge, or leaders that have learnt how to become leaders by trial and improvement; a good leader
will boost the team's performance as it means that they are able to motivate the team to improve and
do better.
Emergent or Prescribed
Leaders can be prescribed or emergent; a prescribed leader is a leader that is appointed that
position, such as if the team chose that specific person to become the captain or if someone in a
higher position gives someone that necessary power.

The manager role can be challenging, and at times, they need to use ethical reasoning and decide

There can be some shared traits between management and leadership, they both provide direction and
the ability to influence the people around them. They need to create an atmosphere where people are
motivated to meet the goal, no matter if it is planned or unplanned. With that being said, Yoder

responses of staff to change, but are empathetic to their concerns, allowing people to express their

change to a situation as needed, I listen to the people around me. I imagine others would say that a
strength of mine is to recognize the emotions of others and, that I try to proceed in a manner that is
appropriate for both the person and the situation. On my home care visit with a nurse, the patient
asked if I could explain the information because he found it easier to follow, and the nurse was
unaware of when he was not comprehending what she was saying. On this day, I saw the moment he

Both the nurse and the patient were grateful.
My personal example of using transformational style to accomplish a goal was through the Student

of the inventory left over. I suggested the idea that we should go around to the students rather than
stay in one place. The students liked the idea but were unsure of how to approach this situation.

Introduction Nurses work in a variety of settings as informal and formal leaders, and must have the
qualities of a strong leader. There are various styles of leaders and in order to choose and develop an
appropriate style, individuals must identify leadership qualities that they possess and qualities that
must be improved through reflective practice. By completing a baseline assessment of my clinical
leadership skills and creating biweekly journals, I was able to identify a style of leadership that
resonated with me. I implemented strategies to improve my weaknesses and conducted a
self–evaluation at the end of the 8 weeks to see my growth and movement as a transformational
leader.
Strengths
According to Kouzes & Posner (2002) five characteristics that followers expect from their leader
is the ability to model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act,
and encourage the heart (Kouzes & Posner, 2002). After conducting a baseline assessment of
clinical leadership, I identified my strengths and areas for improvement (Appendix A). I scored
high in the category of "inspiring a shared vision," and "encouraging the heart." Inspiring a shared
vision entails that the leader is able to envision and create goals that followers care about and works
towards collectively (Kouzes & Posner, 2002). In their meta–analysis of leadership styles, Eagly,
Johannesen–Schmidt & van Engen (2003) emphasize that transformational leaders must put the goal

13. Personal Leadership Qualities And Qualities
There are many different theories and approaches developed, that help determine personal leadership
qualities and actions. Each approach holds valuable information in relation to leadership styles and
qualities, yet you must find the approaches that appeal to you when attempting to determine your own
leadership qualities. The skills approach and authentic leadership approach were the most
appealing for me. I choose these two approaches because I believe that it is very important to be
an authentic leader, as well as to have the knowledge to do the job asked of you and for you to be
able to teach your followers. "Leadership is a combination of intrinsic personality traits, learned
leadership skills, and characteristics of the situation" (Cherry, B., & Jacob, S. R., 2014, p. 287).
You never know when you can be viewed as a leader to someone else, regardless of your position
and title. Knowing where you stand in your leadership qualities will help you throughout your career.
Primary concepts
The skills approach to leadership places importance on the actual capabilities and knowledge of the
leader. Within this approach, it is thought that anyone can be taught the qualities it takes to become
a leader. There are three different types of skill qualities involved within this approach, the technical
skill, human skill, and conceptual skill. The technical skill looks at the ability of a person to
actually do the job. The human skill focuses on the way a person interacts with people.

14. My Leadership Philosophy
1.A Leader is someone who people want to work for. They lookout for their people, yet hold them
accountable. People follow them due to the respect for the person and not because of their position
or rank. They are respected both up and down the chain of command. Leaders are people not afraid
to make decisions. Sometimes the wrong decision is made, but a great leader learns from that move
which helps on future decisions. To date, I have gathered the good values from the leaders I
respected and found a way to incorporate it into my leadership skills. I have also taken the bad
principles from leaders I didn't agree with and have made every effort not to do what they did.
The best leaders I have worked for didn't always give an answer or order right away; sometimes
they would get back with the answer after some time to think on it.
2. When I made decisions at work for any tasking, I tend to complete it my way. I have no
problems listening to others opinions if they are different and occasionally, I will change my
planning upon someone else's idea or thought. However, if I do think my idea is better, I will
normally do it my way, as I am the one who has to answer for it, at the end of the day. Referring to

order to accomplish a goal. It is about the relationship between the leader and the followers. A good

The importance placed on the follower's opinions and capabilities acknowledges the value of his or
her contribution by leadership. It motivates people to do their best and achieve the necessary goal(s).
This empowerment by leadership therefore promotes a beneficial message between leaders and
followers allowing for future communication when difficult circumstances might arise. President
Ronald Reagan was nicknamed "The Great Communicator." Personal thoughts are that Reagan was
one of the great leaders of modern times. The former president was able to change the status quo of
government policies and public opinion through effective communication. As a leader, Reagan was
guided by qualities of passion and genuine concern for the people always speaking from the heart. It
was Reagan's sincere desire to serve the country through his leadership bringing about economic
growth with needed adjustments to government spending. Reagan's ability to speak with conviction
and authority helped people to understand the need for change. Using communication skills is an
aspect of leadership that can make a difference in whether individuals are motivated to follow or
resist. There are several behaviors that determine the effectiveness of leadership especially in
business. A good leader will have the qualities of motivating, organizing, problem solving, listening,
managing conflicts, informing, supporting, delegating, empowering, and implementing a plan of
action.

Self Reflection The purpose of this paper is to focus on my leadership qualities. I will discuss my
key values and beliefs, along with my strongest attribute and one of my weaknesses or an area that
needs improvement. Next, I will discuss two managers or leaders, one that I really liked and one
that I greatly disliked. Finally, I will discuss how I would like my direct reports to perceive me as a
manger and leader. Key Values and Beliefs
Upon reflection, I believe that my primary key value is integrity. I value integrity over all other
values and beliefs. To me, integrity is the root or base upon which our character is built. Without
integrity, our foundation has no substance and our other values are without merit. Another set of
values that is important to me is competence and knowledge. The ability to accomplish a task to
the best of my capabilities is fundamental to my sense of perfectionism. While, "no one is perfect",
may be true, I believe it is important to strive toward that goal. If we set our standards at less than
100%, we will achieve less than 100%. Second, knowledge is a critical component in achieving
competence. I believe learning should be a life–long objective. The information and skills that come
from learning add to your experience and provide you with the means to achieve your goals. These
three values, integrity, competence, and knowledge form the basis of my belief system.

An organization is solely dependent on leadership abilities of its leaders and how they implement
