1 – What are the ideal knowledge, skills and attributes of a leader in my area of work?
Introduction
Leadership is a topic that has been widely studied and worthy of great interest because of its
impact on both individuals and society as a whole. Exactly what constitutes a strong leader is a
topic of debate. The term may conjure images of victorious historical figureheads such as Julius
Caesar or Genghis Khan, but more subtle examples are found in everyday life, wherever there is
group activity. Studies have identified definite styles and theories which define good leadership in
any capacity.

Rarely is leadership mentioned without management with a continuing controversy about the
difference between leadership and management. It is evident that a person can be a leader without
being a manager, and a person can be a manager without leading. Nobody has proposed that
managing and leading are equivalent, but the degree of overlap is a point of debate (Yukl, 2010).
The difference between management and leadership may be subjective. Both involve deciding what
needs to be done, developing the capacity to do it, and ensuring that it is done. However, while
management is concerned with order and consistency, leadership is concerned with change.
Therefore it could be added that management is doing things right whereas leadership is doing the
right things (Hayes 2010a cited Kotter 1990).

It is within our nature to know a good leader when we come across one, as they appeal to our
instincts. It is perhaps more difficult to define the elements that make them successful. The
simplest measure of good leadership may be success. Where a good leader succeeds, a poor leader

A number of leadership traits almost come directly from within. These are the qualities that might be
harder to train, but which make leading other people smoother.
Committed
A good leader has to show commitment. Fulfilling your vision won't happen overnight and you
need to be able to convince everyone else that you won't disappear when things get tough. If you
make a promise, you need to keep it. You can't just preach about achieving A, B and C, but you
need to show that you are actually going to do it.
Commitment matters for two reasons. First, when you show commitment you help build trust. The
team and anyone involved with the project will be able to trust your word. Trust will keep work
morale up and help you achieve objectives faster since people don't need to second–guess what your
objectives are. But furthermore, the second aspect of commitment is about setting an example. As
mentioned throughout the article, leadership is about setting an example and if you show
commitment to your word, your subordinates will be inspired to stick to their promises. Using your
own example of hard work, you will ensure the people around you feel motivated to do the same
thing.
Passionate
Passion should be at the heart of everything you do. It doesn't matter whether you are a leader of a
multibillion company or a lumberjack, without passion, you won't achieve success. You can
understand its importance when you view it as the fuel to your truck.

leadership qualities, and how they apply to a work center or organization. A good leader will be

We were set back a month because of my slip and it cost many hours of overtime to undo what I
had done. Everyone was willing to work with me and fix the mistake after I displayed that I could
be honest and admit to my mistakes. It is this kind of honesty that a leader should possess. The
whole point of leadership is figuring out how to get from where you are to where you need to be.
When a leader doesn't have a vision for the future, it can cause the organization to become

There are qualities that make a good leader these are being able to undertake the decision making
processes; using various different types of techniques to help motivated them team; being able to
give feedback to teammates or peers, without being specific using questions, such as "What angle
should your feet be facing?"; a leader has to be able to establish relationships amongst the team, as
these relationships are interpersonal; finally a leader needs to be able to confidentially direct a
team or a group. However, there are two theories the trait theory and social learning theory which
describes the qualities of a good leader. The trait theory suggests that leaders are born with the natural
leadership qualities, such as good communication skills and enthusiasm. Whereas, the social
learning theory suggests that the leader learn to use their skills to meet the current situation.

Emergent or Prescribed
Leaders can be prescribed or emergent; a prescribed leader is a leader that is appointed that
position, such as if the team chose that specific person to become the captain or if someone in a
higher position gives someone that necessary power.

feelings without judgment, pressure or guilt" (2013). In addition to being quick to adapt and
change to a situation as needed, I listen to the people around me. I imagine others would say that a
strength of mine is to recognize the emotions of others and, that I try to proceed in a manner that is
appropriate for both the person and the situation. On my home care visit with a nurse, the patient
asked if I could explain the information because he found it easier to follow, and the nurse was
unaware of when he was not comprehending what she was saying. On this day, I saw the moment he
was confused and took the opportunity to communicate with him in a way he was able to receive.

My personal example of using transformational style to accomplish a goal was through the Student
Nursing Association (SNA). The SNA was trying to raise money through a bake sale. Profits were
slow and steady throughout the day. Close to the end of the bake sale, there was a significant portion
of the inventory left over. I suggested the idea that we should go around to the students rather than
stay in one place. The students liked the idea but were unsure of how to approach this situation.

Introduction Nurses work in a variety of settings as informal and formal leaders, and must have the
qualities of a strong leader. There are various styles of leaders and in order to choose and develop an
appropriate style, individuals must identify leadership qualities that they possess and qualities that
must be improved through reflective practice. By completing a baseline assessment of my clinical
leadership skills and creating biweekly journals, I was able to identify a style of leadership that
resonated with me. I implemented strategies to improve my weaknesses and conducted a
self–evaluation at the end of the 8 weeks to see my growth and movement as a transformational
leader.
Strengths
According to Kouzes & Posner (2002) five characteristics that followers expect from their leader
is the ability to model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act,
and encourage the heart (Kouzes & Posner, 2002). After conducting a baseline assessment of
clinical leadership, I identified my strengths and areas for improvement (Appendix A). I scored
high in the category of "inspiring a shared vision," and "encouraging the heart." Inspiring a shared
vision entails that the leader is able to envision and create goals that followers care about and works
towards collectively (Kouzes & Posner, 2002). In their meta–analysis of leadership styles, Eagly,

Personal Leadership Qualities And Qualities
There are many different theories and approaches developed, that help determine personal leadership
qualities and actions. Each approach holds valuable information in relation to leadership styles and
qualities, yet you must find the approaches that appeal to you when attempting to determine your own
leadership qualities. The skills approach and authentic leadership approach were the most
appealing for me. I choose these two approaches because I believe that it is very important to be
an authentic leader, as well as to have the knowledge to do the job asked of you and for you to be

The skills approach to leadership places importance on the actual capabilities and knowledge of the
leader. Within this approach, it is thought that anyone can be taught the qualities it takes to become
a leader. There are three different types of skill qualities involved within this approach, the technical
skill, human skill, and conceptual skill. The technical skill looks at the ability of a person to
actually do the job. The human skill focuses on the way a person interacts with people.

My Leadership Philosophy
1.A Leader is someone who people want to work for. They lookout for their people, yet hold them
accountable. People follow them due to the respect for the person and not because of their position
or rank. They are respected both up and down the chain of command. Leaders are people not afraid
to make decisions. Sometimes the wrong decision is made, but a great leader learns from that move
which helps on future decisions. To date, I have gathered the good values from the leaders I
respected and found a way to incorporate it into my leadership skills. I have also taken the bad
principles from leaders I didn't agree with and have made every effort not to do what they did.
The best leaders I have worked for didn't always give an answer or order right away; sometimes
they would get back with the answer after some time to think on it.
2. When I made decisions at work for any tasking, I tend to complete it my way. I have no
problems listening to others opinions if they are different and occasionally, I will change my
planning upon someone else's idea or thought. However, if I do think my idea is better, I will
normally do it my way, as I am the one who has to answer for it, at the end of the day. Referring to
