Developing Leaders Essay
Peter F. Drucker once said, "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things" (Famous–Quotes–And–Quotations.com, n. d.).
Leading is a key function of management. Without leadership, valuable time spent on planning, organizing, and controlling can be lost with no
productive end result. Because leadership is the core of management, a great deal of focus must be placed on its key components. "Leading means
influencing other people to get the job done, maintaining morale, molding company structure and managing conflicts and communication" (Dessler,
2004, p. 3). Effective leadership is the foundation for any business. Developing leaders, leading strategic planning, overcoming obstacles, and

On the downside, students may not have had the opportunity to use and strengthen the skills they have learned. Lack of experience can hinder
effectiveness. External recruiting for top talent from other companies can also be a valuable source for finding leaders. Recruits that already have been
in the workforce may have hands–on experience in team building, problem solving skills, and an understanding of how to interact with employees.
A second option would be to train internal personnel who demonstrate traits and skills consistent with becoming a strong leader. Several benefits
could result from this option. The employee would be familiar with the inner workings and culture of the company, as well as how other employees
respond to company needs. The ability to move up within an organization can be used as a motivational factor. "Employees who are given the
opportunity to develop leadership skills are more inclined to take responsibility and feel pride in their work" (Gale, 2002, p.1).
With downsizing or new openings companies would have in–house experience available immediately. There is no need to wait for a hiring or training
process. Empowering employees offers economic benefits for businesses, as well as a more positive culture. One apparent disadvantage for the
company can be lack of new ideas. Thoughts and processes may become single–minded and outside ideas may be missed.

What is Leadership? Essay
Leadership is a difficult word to define and according to the Miriam–Webster Dictionary leadership is the "office or position of a leader"
(Miriam–Webster, 2010). This definition is definitely not one that I would ascribe to when discussing leadership. My definition of leadership is "the
ability someone has to motivate and empower others to achieve a goal." Some may add to this definition, others may discard it altogether and have a
completely different definition. In the end, leadership takes on many different forms depending on who is doing the defining and we end up asking
ourselves, what is leadership and why do we care? J. Thomas Wren (1995) put together a book to help leaders define leadership for themselves. The

As Gardner (1990) points out "Most men and women go through their lives using no more than a fraction – usually a rather small fraction – of the
potentialities within them" (p. 7). I happen to agree with Gardner on this point. As a teacher you see numerous children who, with the proper training,
could be very great, positive leaders; yet due to their home situation or lack of self–confidence these children grow up never knowing they have that
possibility inside them. "We can do better. Much, much better" (Gardner, 1990 p. 7). Along with Gardner (1990) Wren introduces Burns (1978)
who wrote The Crisis of Leadership. Initially, I thought a crisis in leadership was happening today because according to Burns (1978) "One of the
most universal cravings of our time is a hunger for compelling and creative leadership" (p. 8). However, we need to keep in mind that Burns wrote
about this in 1978. So leadership and those who lead have been having problems for a number of decades. "If we know all too much about our
leader, we know far too little about leadership" (Burns, 1978 p. 9). What Burns was trying to bring to the forefront was the idea that we, as a public,
know far too much about the personal lives of our leaders. The media has been able to bring personal situations into our homes that we would not
otherwise be

Throughout the world there are many different people who have taken the role as a leader. All leaders possess unique qualities and traits that enable
them to lead a group of people. One entrepreneur that was able to become a very successful and influential leader was Steve Jobs. He was a savvy
businessman, inventor, co–founder, and CEO of Apple
Incorporated. He was adopted from birth on February 24, 1955 where he was born and raised in San Francisco, California. Jobs briefly attended Reed
College in 1972 and then dropped out. In 1976, he co–founded Apple, which led to the creation of the products such as iTunes, Apple Stores, iPod,
and iPhone. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2003 and died on October 5, 2011 due to the disease (Isaacson 3).
Looking at the Five Practices of Effective Leaders by Kouzes and Posner, it is clear that Steve Jobs was able to succeed in many of these. The five
practices include model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. Starting with modeling
the way, there are many objectives that this practice includes such as clarifying personal values, setting the example for those values, and providing a
model of credible leadership. Some of the values that Jobs had were having quality products, creative innovations, and dedication to perfection.
During a collaboration that he was working on, Jobs told an engineer to stop solely focusing on the price, and worry more

What Is A Leader? Essay
What is a leader? When thinking about this question I feel like you have to really know what it means to be a leader. Webster Dictionary definition
is: a time when a person holds the position of a leader. No one is born a leader, leaderships skills comes from life experiences, education and
employment. Everyone grows into a leader and then afterwards grow into a leadership style that will eventually begin to shape and inspire other

What Makes a Leader? Essay
To me, leadership is more than a title. It is more than just being in charge. Leadership is honestly, learning, listening, and most importantly application.
Leadership means going the extra mile or two, doing the right thing no matter who's looking, staying encouraged and encouraging other even when
times are hard and you have every reason to quit. Leadership doesn't mean you're rich, well known, liked, or respected but it does mean you are a
passionate, caring, and authentic. Leadership means you care about something so much you are willing to risk everything you have for this belief or

You don't have to be sure of every single action but you can't fear the future or change because in order to accomplish your goal change is often
necessary. A bold attitude is a definite must. Leaders will always come against someone or something that opposes what they believe, boldness
will give them the strength to keep going even when the people they lead have start to disappear or they have grown weak. At the first that you are
ready to give up they will abandon ship as the leader it must be a part of your character to be bold and keep going no matter how hard things may

that is right and maybe they should too.
These characteristics are all great but to have the ability to truly lead you need conviction. Conviction to keep going you going when your boldness

Effective Leadership Essay
In today's competitive world, leadership skills are crucial for both personal and professional development. Leadership is an important function of
management which helps an individual or a business to maximize efficiency and to achieve goals. Leadership has different meanings to various
authors. Most commonly, leadership is defined as influence, that is, the art of influencing people so that they will strive willingly and enthusiastically
toward the achievement of group goals. (Koontz). Leadership is the process of influencing the activities of either formal or informal group in the task
of goal setting and goal achievement. A leader is one whose magnetic personality innervates people for some cause. Not by words, but by their actions is

People requires good leadership skills at personal, professional and social level. Personal leadership helps us to determine our desires, strengths and
abilities. It means Knowing what we want out of life; knowing what success is for us; what are our goals and how to achieve those goals regardless
of what other people think, say, or do. Personal leadership helps us to make our present better and shape a good future. Good leadership is also
important to run a business. Usually, in companies, management stresses more on decision– making skills. They believe a timely and smart decision
will help their company to succeed. They forget that implementation of those decisions are as important as making those decision. Without a proper
implementation , there will be no results. Like there is a saying that, it's easier to said than done. Similarly, making a decision will change nothing, its
how to get things done in a timely and an effective way will help an organization to accomplish their goals. Leadership is crucial in implementing
decisions correctly and successfully. Each of us understand importance of leadership when it comes to our country. We all try to vote for the best
person in elections because it matters who is in office. President make decisions concerning our lives, country, and the world. As a nation, we place no
greater responsibility on any one individual than we do on the president. Therefore, leadership

To inspire and influence others, a leader must have many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Jim Rohn, states, " the challenge of leadership is
to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not

effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.

The team must be able to believe in the message presented. If there has been a pattern of initial enthusiasm for projects, yet no follow through by the
one presenting the latest and greatest, there will be little interest in the any project they propose. Once a leader lacks integrity, they will not garner the
support needed to reach success. No one wants to follow those they cannot believe in, nor trust. The group will not feel obligated to put themselves out
for a project that they know will lack the leadership needed to reach fruition. Team members who feel confident in their leader's abilities and
knowledge are more likely to trust those in leadership positions and actively work to reach the set goals (Zenger & Folkman, 2004). For a leader
to promote a trusting relationship, they must give credit when due to others and take responsibility for any failures. Bestselling author and speaker
on leadership, John C Maxwell (2011) stated, "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." A visionary leader has a clear
picture of what they want to accomplish, and what will be needed to be done in order to reach the goals set. Their original ideas take into account
changes needed for the future and what improvements should be made on current projects to make them more viable and have the ability to reach even
higher success. This includes ensuring team members have the resources needed to

What Leadership Means to Me Essay
My idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and of course, lead by example. A leader
must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able
to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in
their followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. If you have the desire
and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders are developed through a never ending process of self–study, education, training, and

The way in which I communicate either builds or can harm the relationship between my soldier and I. When an important moment of discussion
arises, I am always prepared to appropriately handle the situation at hand. More than anything else, I believe as a leader it is always important to
have great social skills in order to be communicative with clarity and objectiveness, and to have a good relationship with the ones I lead. As a
leader, I understand the meaning of recognition and praise when one is doing a good job, which too is significantly important. A leader is not
always the first to have an idea, but should be the one who is always seeking out new solutions. One way of being a productive leader is
discovering new ways to accomplish a set of tasks while maintaining a positive attitude. If a soldier is demonstrating a bad attitude because he feels
that he can not accomplish a task then my job as a leader, would be to steadily encourage that soldier to work at being all that he can be. A leader to
me, does not need to always know the answer, but believes it to be important to have the initiative to make an answer appear. One form of bad
leadership would be an NCO performing or demonstrating a task that he knows nothing about in front of his soldiers. In the result of the NCO not
performing or demonstrating the task at hand correctly, the soldiers then become incapable of knowing the proper ways of that task. However, if that

The Art of Leadership Essay
The Art of Leadership
What is leadership? Leadership is having the ability to give guidance to those that will follow. Those that follow will help to complete the mission.
Leadership is an immature science and the body of knowledge in the field has developed through a series of fits and starts. Leadership is a soft science,
just as anthropology, sociology and psychology. It cannot be proven exactly what it is. Leadership is an art; the skillful application of leadership
behaviors beyond techniques is much the same as the skillful application of brushstrokes by a master painter. Leadership is both rational and
emotional. Some people take several years and even several classes and still can't quite be a good leader. I even took a test,...show more content...
What is management? Management is a position of authority. Management says what needs to get done and supplies the material to get it done.
Management tends to be the more educated than the experienced. Managers can be trained to hold a position. Management is a position of
leadership. Can leadership and management be the same? Leadership and management are not the same. Anyone can be a manager and not have
any followers. A manager should always know the aspects of any mission. A leader knows the aspects, has the knowledge and the skills to
accomplish the mission. But leadership and management work hand in hand with each other. Leadership is a human relationship process. No
scientific method can be used for testing leadership. Managers are not only interested in status quo, but also production, expansion and growth.
Management was a system to control machines. Leadership can never be controlled. To be a good manager one must look at views from different
perspectives. As situations change, leadership relations change. Leadership cannot be transactional. It can only work if both parties keep their
agreements. A survey was held to compare leaders to managers. The overall opinion was that they are similar in many ways. A leader and a manager
can be one in the same. The difference between a leader and a manager is that a manager directs and a leader motivates. When both are doing their
jobs, they are performing their leadership roles. If

The definition of sound judgment is the capacity to assess situations or circumstances shrewdly and to draw sound conclusions (Definitions.net). Sound
judgment enables the best decision for the situation at hand. It is a key attribute of the transformation of knowledge into understanding and quality

you in the position of making judgment calls that affects others for example, the time you want the Soldiers to form up to the recommendation of
a possible career ending Article 15. I try all the time to be fair and impartial when analyzing a situation and make a judgment call that will lead to
the decisions that affect my troops and myself. Leaders are remember for their judgment calls, the best ones or bad ones. For example everybody
remembers President Truman for his decision of dropping the atomic bombs or President Clinton for the Monica Lewinsky fiasco, these leaders

The Role Of A Leader Essay
The role of a leader is often seen as to lead. However, there are many ways and styles that can be adopted by a leader, Until recently a manager was
seen as a leader, but there is an increasing differentiation made in the commercial world between a manager and a leader. Therefore, in this paper
there will be the aim of defining what a leader is, how they may be effective and how skills may be developed by a potential leader. Webster's
English Dictionary defines a leader as "One who, or that which, leads or conducts; a guide; a conductor. Especially: (a) One who goes first. (b) One
having authority to direct; a chief; a commander" (Dictionary.com). This gives us the insight into how leaders are seen today. In the past a leader and a
manager were one and the same thing, with the advent of scientific management and the development of the theories of Frederick Winslow Taylor the
job of the manager or leader was to gain the greatest value from the employees. In many easy, this is still the role of the leader. However, the methods
and perceptions regarding the way in which this is achieved have changed greatly. The industrial revolution that embodies scientific management saw
standardisation in the use of procedures and tools, with the one best method being dictated to the most suitable employee, who was expected to perform
the task in their machine like manner. The tasks were broken down into the smallest components which would acquire the issues give or training. John

in the work environment during the improvement of their products and services. Furthermore, one of the most important contributions a leader can
make to his company is the creation of a team atmosphere within the company culture. This is done with the correct amount of encouragement,
criticism, and motivation to maintain a balance that will drive employees with the spirit to succeed.
3. Integrity– Integrity is the combination of inner core values and a person's external actions. An individual with high integrity will act the same
externally as they feel on the inside. This type of person is trusted by employees because they do not waver from their core value system, even if at
times it may be easier to do so. Special Agent D. Day who is currently a researcher at the Advanced Operational Art Studies, School of Advanced

A leader is not someone who dictates or makes up rules; a true leader is someone that is on a never ending process of self study, education, and

time, it does not just happen from one day to another. Good leaders are continually working and studying to improve their leadership skills. It is good
to be a leader, but it's even better to be a leader everybody wants to follow and admire.
A leader usually has influence on the team members to work hard, but most importantly to be committed to their goals. There are two types of leaders:

Being a Good Leader Essay
Leadership is a term on which no one can develop a mutual consensus as it carries a different meaning for ach individual. Some people may
consider a person as their leader who is capable of taking them away from hardships, some people may consider the one as their leader who is quite
charismatic and can show them dreams of a bright future or some people may consider that man as a leader who can make them progress by
devising wise strategies for them etc. There is, somehow, something very common in all the perspectives that are the philosophy behind the

No one can get success without having the trust of people on his capabilities because without that he won't be able to gain enough confidence to
take desired actions without the fear of being rejected. Lastly, he must take some steps in order to prove him a leader and also to make him realize
his very own potential (Jim Murray). So, from the above definitions we may draw a difference between leaders and managers as leaders do have a
vision, goal and objective, which he tries to make effective and purposeful. On the contrary, the managers only have to maintain their efficiency on
day–to–day basis. In other words administration is the task of managers but innovation is the characteristic of leaders and there is a possibility of a
manager becoming a leader by setting high standards and goals for his people. It is not the task of this paper to present a difference between both
but it is important to present it only because of its being necessary to clear the concept of a leader. So, a good leader is a person who can look high
into the horizons when the people are looking down in the bottom line. This makes other people follow their footsteps as everyone wants to move
towards horizon to explore new dimensions of practicality. So, first and foremost quality of a leader is not only to see at high things but also make
the people see and strive for the same thing. For this purpose, they have to monitor even minor things by making people feel valued and inspired. A

The Qualities And Traits Of Leaders Essay
2The qualities and traits of leaders
A number of leadership traits almost come directly from within. These are the qualities that might be harder to train, but which make leading other
people smoother.
Committed
A good leader has to show commitment. Fulfilling your vision won't happen overnight and you need to be able to convince everyone else that you
won't disappear when things get tough. If you make a promise, you need to keep it. You can't just preach about achieving A, B and C, but you need to
show that you are actually going to do it.
Commitment matters for two reasons. First, when you show commitment you help build trust. The team and anyone involved with the project will be
able to trust your word. Trust will keep work morale up and help you achieve objectives faster since people don't need to second–guess what your
objectives are. But furthermore, the second aspect of commitment is about setting an example. As mentioned throughout the article, leadership is about
setting an example and if you show commitment to your word, your subordinates will be inspired to stick to their promises. Using your own example
of hard work, you will ensure the people around you feel motivated to do the same thing.
Passionate
Passion should be at the heart of everything you do. It doesn't matter whether you are a leader of a multibillion company or a lumberjack, without
passion, you won't achieve success. You can understand its importance when you view it as the fuel to your truck.

Leadership and Change Essay
Change is when a person does not follow their everyday routine. They may want to try something different, or be forced to. Change can be for the
good and the bad. Places can deal with change ranging from the weather, to the animals present, or the seasons changing. Also, objects can deal
with change too. Objects like an iceberg can start to melt, or a forest fire can kill many trees in an area. As a human, we are the ones deciding on
change. We are in a position to make big decisions and possibly even become a leader in order for change to happen. If one person starts to change,
others will follow and hopefully, the change benefits all. Change affects us in the work place, participating on a team, and in society....show more

a penguin with higher authority and they formed a bigger team of penguins. "None of those with whom Alice spoke showed any enthusiasm about
the idea of swimming into a big dark cave" (Our Iceberg pg 20). The team of penguins brought the idea of changing icebergs to the colonies
attention and had their scouts search for a new home. After searching, the scouts found a new iceberg which was safer for the penguins and in the
end, most of the penguins adapted to their new home and made new traditions. The move was a success and some of the penguins who were
originally against the change are happier with the new iceberg. This past year the Stockton Softball team hired a new coach to add our staff. The
hitting coach was new to all the returning players because we had never had a coach specifically for hitting and a new addition to the staff. The whole
team and I had to adapt to change because the new coach had new rules, expectations, and

Drucker's Insights on Leadership and Developing Leaders

  • 1. Developing Leaders Essay Peter F. Drucker once said, "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things" (Famous–Quotes–And–Quotations.com, n. d.). Leading is a key function of management. Without leadership, valuable time spent on planning, organizing, and controlling can be lost with no productive end result. Because leadership is the core of management, a great deal of focus must be placed on its key components. "Leading means influencing other people to get the job done, maintaining morale, molding company structure and managing conflicts and communication" (Dessler, 2004, p. 3). Effective leadership is the foundation for any business. Developing leaders, leading strategic planning, overcoming obstacles, and motivating and...show more content... On the downside, students may not have had the opportunity to use and strengthen the skills they have learned. Lack of experience can hinder effectiveness. External recruiting for top talent from other companies can also be a valuable source for finding leaders. Recruits that already have been in the workforce may have hands–on experience in team building, problem solving skills, and an understanding of how to interact with employees. A second option would be to train internal personnel who demonstrate traits and skills consistent with becoming a strong leader. Several benefits could result from this option. The employee would be familiar with the inner workings and culture of the company, as well as how other employees respond to company needs. The ability to move up within an organization can be used as a motivational factor. "Employees who are given the opportunity to develop leadership skills are more inclined to take responsibility and feel pride in their work" (Gale, 2002, p.1). With downsizing or new openings companies would have in–house experience available immediately. There is no need to wait for a hiring or training process. Empowering employees offers economic benefits for businesses, as well as a more positive culture. One apparent disadvantage for the company can be lack of new ideas. Thoughts and processes may become single–minded and outside ideas may be missed. Training Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. What is Leadership? Essay Leadership is a difficult word to define and according to the Miriam–Webster Dictionary leadership is the "office or position of a leader" (Miriam–Webster, 2010). This definition is definitely not one that I would ascribe to when discussing leadership. My definition of leadership is "the ability someone has to motivate and empower others to achieve a goal." Some may add to this definition, others may discard it altogether and have a completely different definition. In the end, leadership takes on many different forms depending on who is doing the defining and we end up asking ourselves, what is leadership and why do we care? J. Thomas Wren (1995) put together a book to help leaders define leadership for themselves. The Leader's...show more content... As Gardner (1990) points out "Most men and women go through their lives using no more than a fraction – usually a rather small fraction – of the potentialities within them" (p. 7). I happen to agree with Gardner on this point. As a teacher you see numerous children who, with the proper training, could be very great, positive leaders; yet due to their home situation or lack of self–confidence these children grow up never knowing they have that possibility inside them. "We can do better. Much, much better" (Gardner, 1990 p. 7). Along with Gardner (1990) Wren introduces Burns (1978) who wrote The Crisis of Leadership. Initially, I thought a crisis in leadership was happening today because according to Burns (1978) "One of the most universal cravings of our time is a hunger for compelling and creative leadership" (p. 8). However, we need to keep in mind that Burns wrote about this in 1978. So leadership and those who lead have been having problems for a number of decades. "If we know all too much about our leader, we know far too little about leadership" (Burns, 1978 p. 9). What Burns was trying to bring to the forefront was the idea that we, as a public, know far too much about the personal lives of our leaders. The media has been able to bring personal situations into our homes that we would not otherwise be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Throughout the world there are many different people who have taken the role as a leader. All leaders possess unique qualities and traits that enable them to lead a group of people. One entrepreneur that was able to become a very successful and influential leader was Steve Jobs. He was a savvy businessman, inventor, co–founder, and CEO of Apple Incorporated. He was adopted from birth on February 24, 1955 where he was born and raised in San Francisco, California. Jobs briefly attended Reed College in 1972 and then dropped out. In 1976, he co–founded Apple, which led to the creation of the products such as iTunes, Apple Stores, iPod, and iPhone. The five practices include model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. Starting with modeling the way, there are many objectives that this practice includes such as clarifying personal values, setting the example for those values, and providing a model of credible leadership. Some of the values that Jobs had were having quality products, creative innovations, and dedication to perfection. During a collaboration that he was working on, Jobs told an engineer to stop solely focusing on the price, and worry more Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. What Is A Leader? Essay What is a leader? When thinking about this question I feel like you have to really know what it means to be a leader. Webster Dictionary definition is: a time when a person holds the position of a leader. No one is born a leader, leaderships skills comes from life experiences, education and employment. Everyone grows into a leader and then afterwards grow into a leadership style that will eventually begin to shape and inspire other leaders. Having a title or high above power does not make you a leader. Inspiring and providing great communication, confidence, advice, laughs, knowledge, honesty and reality. Those great skills help you become a great leader. Even with these great leadership skills, there are many different kinds of leadership styles. "Becoming the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily; even if you had no title or position." –Brian Tracy Are you a participative leader? Participative leaders or better known as democratic leaders include team members and others, but making the final decision is up to the participative leader. Participative leaders build confidence and knowledge within team members because their inputs matter within decision making. It helps team members think their opinions, help with decisions. If there is a change that needs to be implemented a participative leader helps team members understand the change in a positive way. • 5. What Makes a Leader? Essay To me, leadership is more than a title. It is more than just being in charge. Leadership is honestly, learning, listening, and most importantly application. Leadership means going the extra mile or two, doing the right thing no matter who's looking, staying encouraged and encouraging other even when times are hard and you have every reason to quit. Leadership doesn't mean you're rich, well known, liked, or respected but it does mean you are a passionate, caring, and authentic. • 6. Effective Leadership Essay In today's competitive world, leadership skills are crucial for both personal and professional development. Leadership is an important function of management which helps an individual or a business to maximize efficiency and to achieve goals. Leadership has different meanings to various authors. Most commonly, leadership is defined as influence, that is, the art of influencing people so that they will strive willingly and enthusiastically toward the achievement of group goals. It means Knowing what we want out of life; knowing what success is for us; what are our goals and how to achieve those goals regardless of what other people think, say, or do. Personal leadership helps us to make our present better and shape a good future. Good leadership is also important to run a business. Usually, in companies, management stresses more on decision– making skills. They believe a timely and smart decision will help their company to succeed. They forget that implementation of those decisions are as important as making those decision. Without a proper implementation , there will be no results. Like there is a saying that, it's easier to said than done. Similarly, making a decision will change nothing, its how to get things done in a timely and an effective way will help an organization to accomplish their goals. Leadership is crucial in implementing decisions correctly and successfully. Each of us understand importance of leadership when it comes to our country. As motivational speaker Jim Rohn, states, " the challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly." (2010) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. The team must be able to believe in the message presented. If there has been a pattern of initial enthusiasm for projects, yet no follow through by the one presenting the latest and greatest, there will be little interest in the any project they propose. Once a leader lacks integrity, they will not garner the support needed to reach success. No one wants to follow those they cannot believe in, nor trust. The group will not feel obligated to put themselves out for a project that they know will lack the leadership needed to reach fruition. Team members who feel confident in their leader's abilities and knowledge are more likely to trust those in leadership positions and actively work to reach the set goals (Zenger & Folkman, 2004). For a leader to promote a trusting relationship, they must give credit when due to others and take responsibility for any failures. Bestselling author and speaker on leadership, John C Maxwell (2011) stated, "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." A visionary leader has a clear picture of what they want to accomplish, and what will be needed to be done in order to reach the goals set. • 8. What Leadership Means to Me Essay My idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and of course, lead by example. A leader must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in their followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. The way in which I communicate either builds or can harm the relationship between my soldier and I. When an important moment of discussion arises, I am always prepared to appropriately handle the situation at hand. More than anything else, I believe as a leader it is always important to have great social skills in order to be communicative with clarity and objectiveness, and to have a good relationship with the ones I lead. As a leader, I understand the meaning of recognition and praise when one is doing a good job, which too is significantly important. A leader is not always the first to have an idea, but should be the one who is always seeking out new solutions. One way of being a productive leader is discovering new ways to accomplish a set of tasks while maintaining a positive attitude. If a soldier is demonstrating a bad attitude because he feels that he can not accomplish a task then my job as a leader, would be to steadily encourage that soldier to work at being all that he can be. A leader to me, does not need to always know the answer, but believes it to be important to have the initiative to make an answer appear. One form of bad leadership would be an NCO performing or demonstrating a task that he knows nothing about in front of his soldiers. In the result of the NCO not performing or demonstrating the task at hand correctly, the soldiers then become incapable of knowing the proper ways of that task. • 9. The Art of Leadership Essay The Art of Leadership What is leadership? Leadership is having the ability to give guidance to those that will follow. Those that follow will help to complete the mission. Leadership is an immature science and the body of knowledge in the field has developed through a series of fits and starts. Leadership is a soft science, just as anthropology, sociology and psychology. It cannot be proven exactly what it is. Leadership is an art; the skillful application of leadership behaviors beyond techniques is much the same as the skillful application of brushstrokes by a master painter. What is management? Management is a position of authority. Management says what needs to get done and supplies the material to get it done. Management tends to be the more educated than the experienced. Managers can be trained to hold a position. Management is a position of leadership. Can leadership and management be the same? Leadership and management are not the same. Anyone can be a manager and not have any followers. A manager should always know the aspects of any mission. A leader knows the aspects, has the knowledge and the skills to accomplish the mission. But leadership and management work hand in hand with each other. Leadership is a human relationship process. No scientific method can be used for testing leadership. Managers are not only interested in status quo, but also production, expansion and growth. Management was a system to control machines. Leadership can never be controlled. To be a good manager one must look at views from different perspectives. As situations change, leadership relations change. Leadership cannot be transactional. It can only work if both parties keep their agreements. A survey was held to compare leaders to managers. The overall opinion was that they are similar in many ways. A leader and a manager can be one in the same. The difference between a leader and a manager is that a manager directs and a leader motivates. When both are doing their jobs, they are performing their leadership roles. If Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Sound judgment enables the best decision for the situation at hand. It is a key attribute of the transformation of knowledge into understanding and quality execution (ADP 6–22, August 2012). For me having sound judgment is been able to sort the important thing from the trivial ones. Been a leader put you in the position of making judgment calls that affects others for example, the time you want the Soldiers to form up to the recommendation of a possible career ending Article 15. I try all the time to be fair and impartial when analyzing a situation and make a judgment call that will lead to the decisions that affect my troops and myself. However, there are many ways and styles that can be adopted by a leader, Until recently a manager was seen as a leader, but there is an increasing differentiation made in the commercial world between a manager and a leader. Therefore, in this paper there will be the aim of defining what a leader is, how they may be effective and how skills may be developed by a potential leader. Webster's English Dictionary defines a leader as "One who, or that which, leads or conducts; a guide; a conductor. Especially: (a) One who goes first. (b) One having authority to direct; a chief; a commander" (Dictionary.com). This gives us the insight into how leaders are seen today. In the past a leader and a manager were one and the same thing, with the advent of scientific management and the development of the theories of Frederick Winslow Taylor the job of the manager or leader was to gain the greatest value from the employees. In many easy, this is still the role of the leader. However, the methods and perceptions regarding the way in which this is achieved have changed greatly. The industrial revolution that embodies scientific management saw standardisation in the use of procedures and tools, with the one best method being dictated to the most suitable employee, who was expected to perform the task in their machine like manner. The tasks were broken down into the smallest components which would acquire the issues give or training. John Child Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Leaders must not only do what they think is right but also take advice from their own workers. Some people may consider a person as their leader who is capable of taking them away from hardships, some people may consider the one as their leader who is quite charismatic and can show them dreams of a bright future or some people may consider that man as a leader who can make them progress by devising wise strategies for them etc. There is, somehow, something very common in all the perspectives that are the philosophy behind the definition, which is related to choosing a best of the best person as their leader. So, from the above definitions we may draw a difference between leaders and managers as leaders do have a vision, goal and objective, which he tries to make effective and purposeful. • 18. The Qualities And Traits Of Leaders Essay 2The qualities and traits of leaders A number of leadership traits almost come directly from within. These are the qualities that might be harder to train, but which make leading other people smoother. Committed A good leader has to show commitment. Fulfilling your vision won't happen overnight and you need to be able to convince everyone else that you won't disappear when things get tough. If you make a promise, you need to keep it. You can't just preach about achieving A, B and C, but you need to show that you are actually going to do it. Commitment matters for two reasons. First, when you show commitment you help build trust. The team and anyone involved with the project will be able to trust your word. Trust will keep work morale up and help you achieve objectives faster since people don't need to second–guess what your objectives are. But furthermore, the second aspect of commitment is about setting an example. As mentioned throughout the article, leadership is about setting an example and if you show commitment to your word, your subordinates will be inspired to stick to their promises. Using your own example of hard work, you will ensure the people around you feel motivated to do the same thing. Passionate Passion should be at the heart of everything you do. It doesn't matter whether you are a leader of a multibillion company or a lumberjack, without passion, you won't achieve success. You can understand its importance when you view it as the fuel to your truck. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Objects like an iceberg can start to melt, or a forest fire can kill many trees in an area. As a human, we are the ones deciding on change. We are in a position to make big decisions and possibly even become a leader in order for change to happen. If one person starts to change, others will follow and hopefully, the change benefits all. The penguins from the book Our Iceberg is Melting, had a mixture of emotions while dealing with change. Some embraced the change of moving icebergs while others tried to convince the others moving was a bad idea. The penguins embraced change by having Fred discover their iceberg was in danger. He then told Alice, who is a penguin with higher authority and they formed a bigger team of penguins. "None of those with whom Alice spoke showed any enthusiasm about the idea of swimming into a big dark cave" (Our Iceberg pg 20). The team of penguins brought the idea of changing icebergs to the colonies attention and had their scouts search for a new home. After searching, the scouts found a new iceberg which was safer for the penguins and in the end, most of the penguins adapted to their new home and made new traditions. The move was a success and some of the penguins who were originally against the change are happier with the new iceberg. This past year the Stockton Softball team hired a new coach to add our staff. The hitting coach was new to all the returning players because we had never had a coach specifically for hitting and a new addition to the staff.
