A Leadership Journey
A LEADERSHIP JOURNEY.

Abstract
The paper records the evolution of the author's thinking on leadership through the course of his
work involvement. Leadership is viewed as a dynamic process which consists formal and informal
roles. The process is introduced as an individual recognizes opportunities and urged to answer back
to evolving patterns and pledge action to enable positive change. The dynamics between formal and
informal leadership structures and leadership as a state of mind are conferred.
The following paper shows a reflection on my personal journey and growing understanding of
leadership based on my work experience. As I look back in time, I identify that most of my current

My favorite definition of leadership relics Sun Tzu in the Art of War: "The way [of leadership]
means inducing the people to have the same aim as the leadership, so that they will share death and
share life, without fear of danger" (Sun Tzu, 2005, p.43). The definition recognizes the collaborative
dynamic that leader and follower share– both share the benefits and risks in its pursuit. Moreover,
Senge's work presented me to systems thinking and understanding the unified wholeness of
organizations. This view was reinforced by my study of Neurolinguistic Programming and
Neuro–Semantics, understanding human communications and the way in which we learn to
construct our mental maps of the area. I saw conscious decisions to be freeing and challenging at
the same time. This commitment was a challenging as I began to explore the process of leadership
outside the hierarchical power structure that could command action by positional authority. Now as
an independent contributor I found myself able to lead freely in a variety of ways, highlighting the
need of influence in the contexts that I was called for.
I mentally stepped back from the situation and took a look at the business, it's internal and external
stakeholders. I would foresee the recede and flow of people as they enthused about their work, the
processes of numerous departments that enabled this organism to be effective. I also realized that
minor issues evolved into major

Essay on Effective Team Leadership
Effective Team Leadership
The area of team leadership attracts a lot of attention in the modern world because of the need to
assemble and deploy diverse teams for the completion of projects. The future of many corporations
relies more and more on the kind of team leadership they have for their projects. This paper explores
a number of facets that constitute effective team leadership.
There are certain essential elements that constitute the definition of leadership. It may refer to the
totality of an organization's top direction–giving functionaries, or the actions applied in providing
direction that enables the organization or team to move forward towards a goal. In reality, there are
very diverse definitions of leadership depending on...show more content...
This vision attracts would–be followers to join in the effort to alleviate the challenge. Thirdly, it is
characteristic of leadership to possess the skills required to harness the resources that a group brings
together and to apply those resources in alleviating the challenge in order to deliver the vision.
Without leadership, a team lacks direction and cohesion. Leadership is there to solve challenges
associated with teamwork and to insure the attainment of the main objective of the team effort.
Leadership reduces the risks associated with a project. This happens because the person or team
providing direction for the project do not get involved in detailed implementation freeing them to
see the big picture from which they identify and reduce or eliminate risks. Leadership increasingly
means the difference between a successful project and a failed one despite the availability of
resources. This is because of the role leadership plays in the effective allocation of resources to
achieve the projects objectives.
On organization is the legacy of its past leaders. This means that all decisions a leader made while in
charge live on through the systems he established, the opportunities he seized, and the mistakes he
made. In team leadership, the outcome of the team effort depends on the skill the leader possesses

Leadership In the changing business environment, leaders of all organisations may face
unprecedented uncertainty, especially the technology advancement and changes among the
employees. To survive and succeed, leaders should have some necessary attributes. Meanwhile,
some changes for leadership skills have to be made to confront the challenges. Two reports(
Ladkin & Weber 2011; Cappelli et al. 2010) and a reflection (Useem 2010) discuss current
business leadership issues in a global business environment . While in the article "Leadership Issues
and Challenges in the Tourism Industry: A Hong Kong Perspective", which focuses on Hong Kong
business leaders, the author Ladkin & Weber have a different overall position compared to the

argue that the leader should have ability to cope with uncertainty' , ' to persistently improvise around
obstacles' (P.97). All the writers take the similar viewpoint that the leaders should have the ability to
communicate with employees effectively so that they will be able to guide and inspire subordinates.
Capelli et al. point out 'empowering through communication' (P.95) and give the example of Indian
companies. They believe human capital is the motivation of the business companies. And the other
specific ways are 'creating a sense of mission' (P.94), 'Engaging through transparency and
accountability' (P.94), 'Investing in training' (P.95). Similarly, Useem states that the leaders should
empower employees by giving them more responsibility, also 'Convey strategic intention' (P.77) tell
them what to do but now how. In contrast, Ladkin & Weber do not discuss empowerment, rather
inspiring them through passion. He also states that the communication between employees and
customers is important. All three articles discuss mission and vision of leaders. Ladkin &
Weber claimed leaders need training and communication, they need long–term view for objective
and 'company vision' (P.278). By contrast, Useem

Being a Good Leader Essay
Leadership is a term on which no one can develop a mutual consensus as it carries a different
meaning for ach individual. Some people may consider a person as their leader who is capable of
taking them away from hardships, some people may consider the one as their leader who is quite
charismatic and can show them dreams of a bright future or some people may consider that man
as a leader who can make them progress by devising wise strategies for them etc. There is,
somehow, something very common in all the perspectives that are the philosophy behind the
definition, which is related to choosing a best of the best person as their leader. Nobody wants to
have a person as his leader who doesn't have knowledge of the needs and aspirations of his...show

No one can get success without having the trust of people on his capabilities because without that
he won't be able to gain enough confidence to take desired actions without the fear of being
rejected. Lastly, he must take some steps in order to prove him a leader and also to make him
realize his very own potential (Jim Murray). So, from the above definitions we may draw a
difference between leaders and managers as leaders do have a vision, goal and objective, which he
tries to make effective and purposeful. On the contrary, the managers only have to maintain their
efficiency on day–to–day basis. In other words administration is the task of managers but
innovation is the characteristic of leaders and there is a possibility of a manager becoming a
leader by setting high standards and goals for his people. It is not the task of this paper to present
a difference between both but it is important to present it only because of its being necessary to
clear the concept of a leader. So, a good leader is a person who can look high into the horizons
when the people are looking down in the bottom line. This makes other people follow their
footsteps as everyone wants to move towards horizon to explore new dimensions of practicality.
So, first and foremost quality of a leader is not only to see at high things but also make the people
see and strive for the same thing. For this purpose, they have to monitor even minor things by
making people feel valued and inspired. A good

Leadership Traits Essay example
Leadership Traits
As a growing debate, the question at hand is whether great leaders are born with specific leadership
traits, or if one can be taught certain traits over time. According to (Wikipedia.com) the approach of
listing leadership qualities, often termed "trait theory of leadership", assumes certain traits or
characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. I believe that leadership traits such as honest,
competent, initiative, inspiring, hardworking, intelligent, and the ability to lead the masses, are
some of the leadership traits one should possess. Within this paper, I will examine the overall
concept of leadership traits, while observing the traits that were, or can be associated with successful

Leadership is an action not a position. With the proper personality, a leader can accomplish many
things like knowledge of the organization. Being able to handle all type of situations shows great
leadership traits. According to (Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy) the adjustment dimension of the Five
Factor Model of Personality "is concerned with how people react to stress, failure, or personal
criticism" and it is important for leaders to develop their response to this dimension. Leader trait
research examined the physical, mental, and social characteristics of individuals. In general, these
studies simply looked for significant associations between individual traits and measures of
leadership effectiveness. Physical traits such as height, mental traits such as intelligence, and social
traits such as personality attributes were all subjects of empirical research. (LEADERSHIP
THEORIES AND STUDIES)
When reflecting throughout America's history, two people in particular exemplified the essence of
true leadership traits, Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. While others displayed a vast
variety of traits, Martin Luther King Jr. as well as Nelson Mandela displayed traits of leadership
that stood the test of time, and while today, their traits still influence, as well as affect people in
today's society. Throughout his time as political activist, as well as South Africa's first African
President, Nelson Mandela's

Essay Strategic Leadership
Strategic Leadership
The only thing harder than being a strategic leader is trying to define the entire scope of strategic
leadership a broad, difficult concept. We cannot always define it or describe it in every detail, but we
recognize it in action. This type of leadership involves microscopic perceptions and macroscopic
expectations. Volumes have been written on the subject, which may in fact contribute to the
difficulty of grasping the concept. One finds confusing and sometimes conflicting information on
this blended concept that involves the vagaries of strategy and the behavioral art of leadership.
Sometimes the methods and models used to explain it are more complicated than the concept and
practice of strategic...show more content...
Strategic leadership entails making decisions across different cultures, agencies, agendas,
personalities, and desires. It requires the devising of plans that are feasible, desirable, and
acceptable to one's organization and partners whether joint, interagency, or multinational. Strategic
leadership demands the ability to make sound, reasoned decisions specifically, consequential
decisions with grave implications. Since the aim of strategy is to link ends, ways, and means, the
aim of strategic leadership is to determine the ends, choose the best ways, and apply the most
effective means. The strategy is the plan; strategic leadership is the thinking and decision making
required to develop and effect the plan. Skills for leading at the strategic level are more complex
than those for leading at the tactical and operational levels, with skills blurring at the seams between
those levels.
Developing Strategic Leadership
If becoming a strategist is the ends, then leadership is the ways, and development is the means.
Learning to become a strategic leader requires special preparation in several areas. First, one must
understand how such a leader develops in essence the anatomy of strategic leadership. Second, one
should recognize some of the essential competencies a strategic leader must have. Finally, the
prospective leader needs to assess his or her current abilities and commit to a development plan.

Leadership Assignment Essay
Introduction
Leadership is the ability to lead a group of people within an organization with certain values and
code of conducts in an effective way. The current situation in the global market, where there is
plenty of competition between various Enterprises, there is a huge demand for a useful and a
successful leader. The high complexity of the technology, economic, social and political factors
make all the more complicated for the leader to take favourable decisions. Consequently, the margin
for error is so minimal that any wrong decision taken by the leader will put the whole group of
people into precarious situation.

In other words, The Leader should be flexible enough to make smart decisions so that the
relationship with the client is not hampered under any circumstances without overcompensating the

nurturing valuable industry reliability in the workplace. They fulfil this by mounting, encouraging,
and leading a culture of Oneness in their organizations which serves as a gateway to earn
organizational trust.

leadership in the current trends. A forceful visualization and a set of traits, which are commonly

leadership method revolves around the ability to incorporate a climate in which employees would
have a sense of belonging as a collective group. Upon examining further, we see that the
corporation has empowered every employee to act as a Leader by setting up a group trait "Trust
and responsibility in all Relationships", which directly or indirect demands every individual in the
organization to take ownership of key actions to establish good relationships with the co–workers.

Business Leadership Essay
In corporate America the term used to describe a person in a position of power is "Manager". A
leader can be a manager, but a manager is not necessarily a leader. Leaders motivate, challenge,
and influence others to achieve goals. Great leaders have the necessary skills and attributes
which allow them to connect with the team and organization. Being a leader is not the same as
managing an organization. Leader's posses the interpersonal skills needed to influence others to
achieve a goal willingly. Leading is a major part of a manager's job. Leaders do not need to be a
manager to lead people, but managers must know how to lead as well as manage. Each person in a
company brings his or her own experiences, values, and beliefs to the...show more content...
Bova (2008) states that the following four characteristics are found in good leaders: they believe in
open communication, they do not stick with the status quo, they are selective in what they measure,
and they have passion for values and culture. Each characteristic is essential to a healthy
organizational culture. When an employee feels he or she has open communication with a leader,
they are more inclined to share if problems arise whether or not work related. Non–work related
issues may eventually take a toll on an employee's performance at work. However, with open
communication, an employee feels comfortable in apprising the leader of a situation so that
future problems are avoided. Not all managers are leaders and not all leaders are managers. The
biggest difference between management and leadership is people skills. In determining if a
person is a leader or a manager, Bova (2008) lists some differences with which many a person
would agree. One difference is that a manager directs people. Managers essentially tell employees
to get the job done. Many people work on autopilot until their work shift ends. However, people will
follow a leader. Leaders inspire others to want to strive for their best and to go beyond their normal
duties. Another difference between managers and leaders is that managers tend to control or
micromanage their department. Such management style causes employees to be unhappy and
possibly rebel. Under these types of

What is Leadership? Essay
Leadership is a difficult word to define and according to the Miriam–Webster Dictionary leadership
is the "office or position of a leader" (Miriam–Webster, 2010). This definition is definitely not one
that I would ascribe to when discussing leadership. My definition of leadership is "the ability
someone has to motivate and empower others to achieve a goal." Some may add to this definition,
others may discard it altogether and have a completely different definition. In the end, leadership
takes on many different forms depending on who is doing the defining and we end up asking
ourselves, what is leadership and why do we care? J. Thomas Wren (1995) put together a book to
help leaders define leadership for themselves. The Leader's...show more content...
As Gardner (1990) points out "Most men and women go through their lives using no more than a
fraction – usually a rather small fraction – of the potentialities within them" (p. 7). I happen to agree
with Gardner on this point. As a teacher you see numerous children who, with the proper training,
could be very great, positive leaders; yet due to their home situation or lack of self–confidence these
children grow up never knowing they have that possibility inside them. "We can do better. Much,
much better" (Gardner, 1990 p. 7). Along with Gardner (1990) Wren introduces Burns (1978)
who wrote The Crisis of Leadership. Initially, I thought a crisis in leadership was happening today
because according to Burns (1978) "One of the most universal cravings of our time is a hunger
for compelling and creative leadership" (p. 8). However, we need to keep in mind that Burns
wrote about this in 1978. So leadership and those who lead have been having problems for a
number of decades. "If we know all too much about our leader, we know far too little about
leadership" (Burns, 1978 p. 9). What Burns was trying to bring to the forefront was the idea that
we, as a public, know far too much about the personal lives of our leaders. The media has been able
to bring personal situations into our homes that we would not otherwise be

Leadership Essay Leadership In the changing business environment, leaders of all organisations may face unprecedented uncertainty, especially the technology advancement and changes among the employees. To survive and succeed, leaders should have some necessary attributes. Meanwhile, some changes for leadership skills have to be made to confront the challenges. Two reports( Ladkin & Weber 2011; Cappelli et al. 2010) and a reflection (Useem 2010) discuss current business leadership issues in a global business environment . While in the article "Leadership Issues and Challenges in the Tourism Industry: A Hong Kong Perspective", which focuses on Hong Kong business leaders, the author Ladkin & Weber have a different overall position compared to the ...show more content... argue that the leader should have ability to cope with uncertainty' , ' to persistently improvise around obstacles' (P.97). All the writers take the similar viewpoint that the leaders should have the ability to communicate with employees effectively so that they will be able to guide and inspire subordinates. Capelli et al. point out 'empowering through communication' (P.95) and give the example of Indian companies. They believe human capital is the motivation of the business companies. And the other specific ways are 'creating a sense of mission' (P.94), 'Engaging through transparency and accountability' (P.94), 'Investing in training' (P.95). Similarly, Useem states that the leaders should empower employees by giving them more responsibility, also 'Convey strategic intention' (P.77) tell them what to do but now how. In contrast, Ladkin & Weber do not discuss empowerment, rather inspiring them through passion. He also states that the communication between employees and customers is important. All three articles discuss mission and vision of leaders. Ladkin & Weber claimed leaders need training and communication, they need long–term view for objective and 'company vision' (P.278). • 4. Being a Good Leader Essay Leadership is a term on which no one can develop a mutual consensus as it carries a different meaning for ach individual. Some people may consider a person as their leader who is capable of taking them away from hardships, some people may consider the one as their leader who is quite charismatic and can show them dreams of a bright future or some people may consider that man as a leader who can make them progress by devising wise strategies for them etc. There is, somehow, something very common in all the perspectives that are the philosophy behind the definition, which is related to choosing a best of the best person as their leader. No one can get success without having the trust of people on his capabilities because without that he won't be able to gain enough confidence to take desired actions without the fear of being rejected. Lastly, he must take some steps in order to prove him a leader and also to make him realize his very own potential (Jim Murray). So, from the above definitions we may draw a difference between leaders and managers as leaders do have a vision, goal and objective, which he tries to make effective and purposeful. On the contrary, the managers only have to maintain their efficiency on day–to–day basis. In other words administration is the task of managers but innovation is the characteristic of leaders and there is a possibility of a manager becoming a leader by setting high standards and goals for his people. It is not the task of this paper to present a difference between both but it is important to present it only because of its being necessary to clear the concept of a leader. So, a good leader is a person who can look high into the horizons when the people are looking down in the bottom line. This makes other people follow their footsteps as everyone wants to move towards horizon to explore new dimensions of practicality. So, first and foremost quality of a leader is not only to see at high things but also make the people see and strive for the same thing. For this purpose, they have to monitor even minor things by making people feel valued and inspired. A good Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Leadership Traits Essay example Leadership Traits As a growing debate, the question at hand is whether great leaders are born with specific leadership traits, or if one can be taught certain traits over time. According to (Wikipedia.com) the approach of listing leadership qualities, often termed "trait theory of leadership", assumes certain traits or characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. I believe that leadership traits such as honest, competent, initiative, inspiring, hardworking, intelligent, and the ability to lead the masses, are some of the leadership traits one should possess. Leadership is an action not a position. With the proper personality, a leader can accomplish many things like knowledge of the organization. Being able to handle all type of situations shows great leadership traits. Leader trait research examined the physical, mental, and social characteristics of individuals. In general, these studies simply looked for significant associations between individual traits and measures of leadership effectiveness. Physical traits such as height, mental traits such as intelligence, and social traits such as personality attributes were all subjects of empirical research. (LEADERSHIP THEORIES AND STUDIES) When reflecting throughout America's history, two people in particular exemplified the essence of true leadership traits, Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. While others displayed a vast variety of traits, Martin Luther King Jr. as well as Nelson Mandela displayed traits of leadership that stood the test of time, and while today, their traits still influence, as well as affect people in today's society. We cannot always define it or describe it in every detail, but we recognize it in action. This type of leadership involves microscopic perceptions and macroscopic expectations. Volumes have been written on the subject, which may in fact contribute to the difficulty of grasping the concept. One finds confusing and sometimes conflicting information on this blended concept that involves the vagaries of strategy and the behavioral art of leadership. Sometimes the methods and models used to explain it are more complicated than the concept and practice of strategic...show more content... Strategic leadership entails making decisions across different cultures, agencies, agendas, personalities, and desires. It requires the devising of plans that are feasible, desirable, and acceptable to one's organization and partners whether joint, interagency, or multinational. Strategic leadership demands the ability to make sound, reasoned decisions specifically, consequential decisions with grave implications. Since the aim of strategy is to link ends, ways, and means, the aim of strategic leadership is to determine the ends, choose the best ways, and apply the most effective means. The strategy is the plan; strategic leadership is the thinking and decision making required to develop and effect the plan. Skills for leading at the strategic level are more complex than those for leading at the tactical and operational levels, with skills blurring at the seams between those levels. Developing Strategic Leadership If becoming a strategist is the ends, then leadership is the ways, and development is the means. Learning to become a strategic leader requires special preparation in several areas. First, one must understand how such a leader develops in essence the anatomy of strategic leadership. Second, one should recognize some of the essential competencies a strategic leader must have. Finally, the prospective leader needs to assess his or her current abilities and commit to a development plan. Anatomy of a Strategic Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Leaders motivate, challenge, and influence others to achieve goals. Great leaders have the necessary skills and attributes which allow them to connect with the team and organization. Being a leader is not the same as managing an organization. Leader's posses the interpersonal skills needed to influence others to achieve a goal willingly. Bova (2008) states that the following four characteristics are found in good leaders: they believe in open communication, they do not stick with the status quo, they are selective in what they measure, and they have passion for values and culture. Each characteristic is essential to a healthy organizational culture. When an employee feels he or she has open communication with a leader, they are more inclined to share if problems arise whether or not work related. Non–work related issues may eventually take a toll on an employee's performance at work. However, with open communication, an employee feels comfortable in apprising the leader of a situation so that future problems are avoided. Not all managers are leaders and not all leaders are managers. The biggest difference between management and leadership is people skills. In determining if a person is a leader or a manager, Bova (2008) lists some differences with which many a person would agree. One difference is that a manager directs people. Managers essentially tell employees to get the job done. Many people work on autopilot until their work shift ends. However, people will follow a leader. Leaders inspire others to want to strive for their best and to go beyond their normal duties. Another difference between managers and leaders is that managers tend to control or micromanage their department. Such management style causes employees to be unhappy and possibly rebel. • 9. What is Leadership? Essay Leadership is a difficult word to define and according to the Miriam–Webster Dictionary leadership is the "office or position of a leader" (Miriam–Webster, 2010). This definition is definitely not one that I would ascribe to when discussing leadership. My definition of leadership is "the ability someone has to motivate and empower others to achieve a goal." Some may add to this definition, others may discard it altogether and have a completely different definition. In the end, leadership takes on many different forms depending on who is doing the defining and we end up asking ourselves, what is leadership and why do we care? J. Thomas Wren (1995) put together a book to help leaders define leadership for themselves. The Leader's...show more content... As Gardner (1990) points out "Most men and women go through their lives using no more than a fraction – usually a rather small fraction – of the potentialities within them" (p. 7). I happen to agree with Gardner on this point. As a teacher you see numerous children who, with the proper training, could be very great, positive leaders; yet due to their home situation or lack of self–confidence these children grow up never knowing they have that possibility inside them. "We can do better. Much, much better" (Gardner, 1990 p. 7). Along with Gardner (1990) Wren introduces Burns (1978) who wrote The Crisis of Leadership. Initially, I thought a crisis in leadership was happening today because according to Burns (1978) "One of the most universal cravings of our time is a hunger for compelling and creative leadership" (p. 8). However, we need to keep in mind that Burns wrote about this in 1978. So leadership and those who lead have been having problems for a number of decades. "If we know all too much about our leader, we know far too little about leadership" (Burns, 1978 p. 9). What Burns was trying to bring to the forefront was the idea that we, as a public, know far too much about the personal lives of our leaders. The media has been able to bring personal situations into our homes that we would not otherwise be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
