Long Range Goals
Mission( 5–15 year Long range Goal)
I want to be the the "guy" in film industry. When people see or hear my name attached to a film;
they'll know its going to be epic. I want to own my own production company, where we make
money, and groundbreaking films. I expect a Hybrid of career advancement, where I will be rising–
within, and learning, then making my move towards my own company once I have the capital,
friends, and buzz in the industry. I would plan to start out with horror movies as they are typically
low–budget, which should make financing a little less daunting. Once I get my first breakout film,
similar to Paranormal Activity or The Blair Witch Project, I want to branch out to different genres,
as well as produce experimental films and projects.
First Leadership position (3–5 years)

I think that the 90–minute feature–film format may be replaced with something shorter, perhaps 50–
70 minutes. Perhaps Double–features and stuff like that may becoming "retro–cool" again.
Furthermore, players like Netflix and Amazon are creating environments where the theatre will
become obsolete. The digital age/// the internet creates opportunities to directly reach fans and
consumers, effectively removing much of the "middle–men" jobs. (Travel Agent, Real–estate, etc.)
Virtual–reality also poses a significant threat/opportunity towards us within the creative industry,
especially us who use audio and video. The eyes and ears translate what I create. Films are good at
immersing people into created universes and stories. However, VR, Interaction, and sensory feelings
like touch and smell may be included in the standard formula for immersive entertainment. There's
also wildcard factors such as death, I lose my arms and eyes. Or on a positive note, I could win the
lotto, which would propel me towards my end–goal a lot faster.

Among New American Ghost Cinema, one can witness the re–emergence of an interesting sub–
genre: the Found Footage Cinema. We can observe this new fascination in many modern horror
films such as 2008's Cloverfield, 2009's Paranormal Activity, and 2011's Apollo 18. Digging below
the surface of a literal reading of some of these movies, one finds a genre that can be far more
intelligent than what meets the public eye. For example, within Cloverfield, the screams and images
of smoke heaving through the city of Manhattan hint at post–September 11th. To understand the
growing popularity of Found Footage Cinema and why we discover these political undertones, this
paper will examine The Blair Witch Project (1999, Myrick and Sanchez) in the ... Show more

Wood conceived a theory that proposed the monster in the horror genre embodied "all that which a
society represses." From Wood's position, one can conclude "all that which a society represses"
relates primarily to those features (social, political, sexual, and racial) which did not fit into
Bourgeois capitalist America. He argues that this repression is the key to understanding the inner
workings of the modern American mind. The key to Wood's argument is the difference he makes
between basic and surplus repression: "Basic repression is universal, necessary, and inescapable. It
is what makes possible our development from an uncoordinated animal capable of little beyond
screaming and convulsions into a human being; it is bound up with the ability to accept the
postponement of gratification with the development of our thought and memory process, of our
capacity for self–control, and of our recognition and consideration of other people."
Surplus repression, in contrast, are those constraints imposed upon people by specific cultures since
"it is the process whereby people are conditioned from earliest infancy to take on predetermined
roles within a given culture. (In contemporary America) thus, surplus repression makes us into
monogamous heterosexual bourgeois patriarchal capitalists." As a cultural

Positive Impact Of Social Media On The Movie Industry
Ever since the successful marketing campaign of "The Blair Witch Project", studios have
progressively marketed their films in social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and
other forms of websites. This has become more apparent in recent years where films even have their
own social media accounts to share and update fans with anything related to the film itself whether
it be interviews with the cast, trailers, movie posters, or just to simply interact with their fans. Some
movie critics claim that social media is ruining the movie industry because films tend to get too
much coverage which leads to spoilers getting revealed before the film releases. However, I believe
that social media is not only a positive for the movie industry it's an innovation because it's a cheap
and effective way to generate buzz for a film, it allows the fans to feel more connected with the
movie they're planning to see, and individuals can easily voice their opinion about a flick whether it
be positive or negative. Have you ever noticed that people nowadays instinctively go to any social
media outlet, most notably YouTube to check out all the new movie trailers released for upcoming
films, if so then you have already detected that movie studios tend to do this in a regular basis
because it's a cheap and effective way to produce talk for their future films. The most recent
example of this would have to go to Marvel Studios and the release of the first trailer for "Avengers:

Essay The Relationship Between Producers and Audiences
The relationship between producers and audiences
Audience research, producer response to research and audience targeting
A producer when beginning pre–production or even before will most likely look at some form of
survey's which would include things like possible cast members for the film and the amount of
audience that would want to see possibly be interested in the genre. They will then take this to the
writers and director of the particular film and they will make amendments to how the survey has
come out. A producer will also look at the success of recent films of the same type; this is visible in
recent times with the resurgence of vampire films following the success of twilight saga this has
lead to TV series and films ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A producer who knows that their film doesn't have a lot of money or publicity would use a film
festival to get both of these things. Also these films will most likely be in art house cinemas but if
one is particularly successful then this could move to multiplex cinemas the troll hunter is one of
those films that has crossed the brigde from art house to multiplex and is now being shown in over
20 vue cinemas in the UK, the producer did this by getting the film publicity from channel 4's sister
channel E4 and making a competition for a private screening this made the film sort after which
then lead to interest from multiplex cinemas. But for films that won't need that sort of publicity will
have a big Hollywood premiere that would most likely have a segment on TV showing the premiere
and would include interviews with the cast, director and any other notable person involved with the
film. Celebrities from outside of the film will go also to show the films quality and also so that they
themselves can get publicity, films like this will almost always be shown in multiplex cinemas this
is the same for Cars 2 but will probably have this kind of showing but because it's a childs film the
TV shows and so on will most probably be shown on kids TV most obviously the Disney

Observational Horror Film Techniques
In the recent year, new subgenres of movies has been created due to the exploration of new
technologies and total reconstruction of the genre. One such genre that has been gaining a lot of
popularity is "Observational Horror". "Observational horror films are those that appropriate the
aesthetic of observational documentary cinema's handheld camerawork" (Raimondo, 2014, p. 66).
This aesthetic of the camera playing a big part in the movie and the movie being shot by a character
mimics how a video would be shot in a real situation, thus making the events of the movie more
relatable and horrifying. It possesses many qualities that make the movies more engaging and
frightening. Therefore, in this essay I will be analysing 2 films (The Blair Witch ... Show more

The Tunnel is an Australian movie about a journalist and her camera crew who go in to an
abandoned underground train system in search story to expose the government after watching a
YouTube video about teenagers who went missing in the tunnels. Upon the disappearance of their
sound guy, the crew soon realise that they are not alone in the tunnels. The movie is shot in many
different ways. But the main idea of this movie is that it is a documentary about what happened to
the journalist and her crew in the tunnel, this is evident from the scenes of the interviews from the
only two survivors from the voyage. But most of the movie consists of footage shot by the crew
themselves when they were in the tunnels. The movie also consists of a few shots that seem like
they were taken from CCTV cameras in the stations. In comparison to The Blair Witch Project, this
movie is a bit different, because we find the creature that is creating the chaos in the tunnels early.
However, what it is, its origin and its purpose (other than killing people) is not revealed. So it still
supports Raimondo's argument that the epistephilia of the story is engaging the viewer to know
more about the creature. Additionally, "Unlike documentary cinema, the viewers become vulnerable
as they scan and interpret the images, which consequently introduces the possibility of a

Unfriended: Movie Analysis
A story of six teenagers was told entirely through a limiting view of a laptop screen as six friends
face bizarre outcomes from their pasts darkest secrets and lies. One night, the six friends, Ken
(Jacob Wysocki), Adam (William Peltz), Jess (Renee Olstead), Val (Courtney Halverson), Mitch
(Moses Storm), and the main character, Blaire (Shelley Hennig), are all on Skype as per their usual
hangout. Conquicidently this night is an exact year after their so–called friend, Laura Barns
(Heather Sossaman) committed suicide. Communicating to Blaire via facebook and skype, Laura's
ghost slowly turns all the friends against each other, unravels their deceptions, and creates fear that
eventually leads to absurd murderous outcomes to all the teenagers. This all came to be because of
the friends publicly shaming Laura by posting drunk videos of her and bullying her online. With an
interesting plot line, but little substance provided of the characters and plot, the 2014 found footage
cliched horror film, Unfriended, brings nothing new to the horror genre and dispenses a comical
atmosphere. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Blair Witch Project Analysis
The Blair Witch Project is a highly successful and widely innovative independent film that was
released on July 30th, 1999. The film followed three student filmmakers who aimed to create a
documentary about a local legend called the Blair Witch. While the film alluded to various
hallmarks of the horror film genre, it was groundbreaking in its marketing strategy, the use of found
footage, and cinematography.
In many ways, The Blair Witch Project adheres to various tropes and traditions of the horror movie
genre. The film includes some characteristics of the Italian Giallo genre. In both genres, the killer is
unknown and unseen to the audience. The giallo "underscores the theme of sight and the ability to
see clearly" (Bondanella 381). In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The monster triumphs over the protagonist(s), normative order is never restored, and the fates of the
the main characters and the monster are left uncertain (Pinedo 29–34). In The Blair Witch Project,
the protagonists are reported missing but we never see what actually happened to them. The town
begins exhaustive searches to find the students. The witch is never seen and presumably survives the
film to haunt the woods again. Like many other postmodern horror films, The Blair Witch Project
plays on insider knowledge that the audience has about the horror genre. The audiences know not to
run into abandoned houses, yell in the forest, or run away in different directions but the protagonists
do not. The audience then engages with the film using their insider knowledge by yelling or
commenting at the main characters to avoid the pitfalls of the horror genre.
The film also utilizes what Isabel Pinedo calls "the pleasure of not–seeing". She mentions that, "The
blocked vision produced by the film heightens the intensity of the horror by refusing to show the
terrifying spectacle" (54). The Blair Witch Project utilizes blocked vision through the use of the
camcorder. In the film, the viewer is only able to see what the protagonists see. In the darkness of
the night in the woods, the protagonists and the audience are unable to see what is terrorizing the
main characters in the night. In this sense, we express the same anxieties and fears of the

The Blair Witch Project Essay
The Blair Witch Project
As writers and producers saw the amazing popularity and success of the movie Scream many other
copy cat versions were made. Movies such as I Know What You Did Last Summer and Urban
Legend all followed the same teen slasher format. Nothing is being left up to the movie viewer's
imagination anymore. Everything for the past thirty years was spelled out and given to the viewer,
leaving the identity of the killer as the only form of mystery. The genre of horror was losing a very
important battle. The bone–chilling movies of the past were giving way to the comedic teen movies
of the present.
With the movie viewing public practically begging for a new type of horror movie, two young
filmmakers decided to take ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not once in any of the trailers, on the web site, and in the documentary was anything mentioned
about this story being fictional. The whole idea of the movie was that the film that was being viewed
was footage found in the woods and that none of the three college students were ever seen again.
Not knowing this movie was fake made the general public even more scared.
The film starts out showing the enthusiastic students shopping for food and acting as if there were
going on a fun hike for the day. As the movie progresses the students finally get into the woods were
the Blair Witch is supposed to reside. As time passed and night fell they set up camp. Through out
the night mysterious sounds seemed to be happening all around the tent. Not once did the students
ever see anything, thus the viewers of the movie did not either. Nothing was presented up front. This
same pattern was followed through the whole movie. The Blair Witch Project has no sex or even
sexual tension, no music of any kind, no demonic power tools. No prowling, voyeuristic camera
from the killer's point of view; this movie is about the victims and the victims they make of each
other. There are no shock cuts to the monster. In fact no visible monster. Every bump in the night or
mysterious sound was left up to the viewer's imagination. For some this was

The Main Techniques of Telling a Story in Various Films Essay
The Main Techniques of Telling a Story in Various Films
The First film I'm going to talk about is "The Blair witch project" which is a story about 3 teenagers
who are filming a documentary about The Blair Witch which is a legend told for years which is said
to be true. They act and talk in dialogue making the film seem real we can also relate to this film if
we have ever filmed ourselves hanging out with our friends as this is simply what this film does.
The characters are fun to start off with but as they get themselves into more situations they become
more miserable and dramatic.
They keep the camera rolling all the way through this which is a very unique, interesting way to tell
the story. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The casting of the actors was good and was interesting to see the Woman being the stronger of the
three giving out the orders and how her decision was always final and always looking for someone
to blame, didn't like it when she was wrong and was quite physically strong as she attacks one of her
friends as she finds out he through the map in the pond. She is also the last to crack but when she
does she loses her sense of power and is more feminism with her tears creating emotion and
weakness with the stress of the situation and losing one of the three teenagers as they wake up
they've disappeared. This role was clear and believable but didn't work very well as women are still
seen as being protected by the men like in all the "scream films" there is a woman as a stereotypical
type victim.
Propp's theory applies to this film the villain or malefactor being the Blair witch, there is no hero as
the characters end in their bloody deaths in a small house, the donor is the sources from the locals
about the Blair witch, the princess is the three teenagers, the false hero is the girl as she tries but
fails, the Blair witch is also the dispatcher. This theory clearly shows that the teenagers seek to
where they shouldn't ending with their bloody deaths so there is no hero

Examples Of Guerrilla Marketing
Guerrilla Marketing is an advertising strategy that focuses on low–cost unconventional marketing
tactics to yield results. The term guerrilla marketing was coined by Jay Conrad Levinson in 1984 in
his book 'Guerrilla Advertising'. The term was inspired by guerrilla warfare which became popular
during the Peninsular War, when the Spanish people rose against the Napoleonic troops and fought
against a highly superior army using the guerrilla strategy. The term "guerrilla" was used in English
as early as 1809, to describe the fighters (e.g., "The town was taken by the guerrillas"), and also (as
in Spanish) to denote a group or band of such fighters.
Guerrilla warfare tactics includes ambushes, sabotage, raids and elements of surprise. Much like
guerrilla warfare, guerrilla marketing uses the same sort of tactics in the marketing industry.
Guerrilla marketing originally was a concept aimed towards small businesses with a small budget,
but this didn't stop big businesses from adopting the same ideology.
One of the most famous examples of guerrilla marketing is The, Blair Witch Project. The Blair
Witch Project is a 1999 American psychological horror film that was produced by five graduates of
the University of Central Florida Film Program with a minimal budget and a camera. The two set up

The Importance Of Setting Conventions In Horror Movies
Paragraph 2:
Setting conventions play a huge part within the horror genre. Since horror first existed it has been
set in ghostly abandoned castles with spooky dark dungeons, gloomy forests and spine–chilling
secret passageways. Since these, settings in the horror genre has evolved into a more terrifying
definition of scary. In horror movies today we mainly see old, haunted, broken down houses set in
isolated forests exactly like the new house the family moves into in 'The Conjuring' or like in the
horror movie 'Halloween', set in a neighbourhood during the night time. Horror has moved into
these more sophisticated ideas of creepy and scary as the setting is more relatable to everyday life,
and takes a toll on the audience's psychological mind set to start ... Show more content on

This gives the audience a full picture of exactly what's happening as well as giving the film variety
so it doesn't become boring. Hand held video shots have also become increasingly popular after the
movie 'The Blair Witch Project'. Most common in the 'Paranormal Activity' series, the handheld
camera gives the film better point of view shots similar to what you would see in real life if the
same instance was to occur. This then also creates tension as you are only able to see what the
camera is focusing on not what maybe be lurking out of shot that would normally be viewed in any
other filming convention. Tension can also be created as fear is often shown due to frantic camera
shaking during a climactic scene in which the protagonist fears his or her life, increasing the
suspense for the audience. Cinematography plays a huge part within a film as gives certain
messages within the shot type whether it quick editing, close ups, long shots, or handheld action all
of these techniques give the film it's alarming scare. Music and sound conventions offer the film a
range of unsettling and creepy tones from creaking doors that imply a unseeable supernatural
presence to whispering from right beside the

The Realist Aesthetics Adopted By The Verite Horror Subgenre
As Stephen Price stated, "digital imaging technologies are rapidly transforming nearly all phases of
contemporary film production. Film–makers today storyboard, shoot and edit their films in
conjunction with the computer manipulation of images" (Price, 1996, pg.27). Since digital imaging
technologies have changed the very nature of film production, it is important to understand and
examine the wider effects these new modes of filmmaking have on spectators. With this in mind, the
following essay argues that the realist aesthetics adopted by the verité horror subgenre not only
work to entice fear among audiences by presenting the events occurring on screen as real, but in
doing so, also reveal anxieties about the truthfulness of the image that have been heightened by the
ubiquitous incorporation of digital imaging technology in contemporary film production. This will
be demonstrated first by providing a brief history about the verité horror subgenre. Once this is
completed, this essay will examine how the realist aesthetics adopted by the genre's most notorious
and commercially successful films, The Blair Witch Project (Myrick, 1999) and Paranormal Activity
(Peli, 2007), reflect postmodern anxieties about the truthfulness of visual representations in film.
Verité horror, also commonly referred to as found footage horror, can be considered as a horror
subgenre of film that adopts documentary–style techniques to create the impression that the images
presented onscreen are

Independent Vs Blockbuster Research Paper
Ever since the Supreme Court handed down the Paramount decision the film industry has been open
to everyone, not just large studios. The advent of such freedom in the business caused many smaller
entities to produce small budget films which packed a big punch. To counter this new wave large
studios had to find a moneymaking venture that the smaller producers couldn't go up against;
namely blockbuster films. This created the venue that's still in the forefront today, the blockbuster
versus the independent. Independent film, created outside of the normal studio format, is one of the
best ways that smaller budgeted producers can bring their ideas to market. Born not of the major but
of the minor independent film is a more intimate way of portraying concepts on the screen. Usually

The Horror genre is a very good example of a section which straddles the line between both
blockbuster and independent. The Blair Witch Project was a small budget film made on hand–held

towering price of 60 million. Both movies were unbelievably brutal in their ability to scare people
through use of camera techniques and excellent acting. Suspense and the methods of violence were
very similar with an unseen antagonist pursuing the main characters ultimately most to their death.
The Blair Witch Project was able to provide a wide audience a sense of impending doom through
suspenseful acting and editing. The movie provided the viewer with point of view access to on–

First Ten Minutes of Blair Witch Project and What Lies Beneath
The director of "Blair Witch Project" has a very unusual way of engaging his audience in the first
ten minutes. His main characters are 16–18 year old high–school students and they are making a
documentary for a school project which supposedly did actually take place. The students are shown
laughing about and having a good time. By showing them looking happy, the director strongly
creates the impression that they are almost setting themselves up for something unexpected to
happen to them. The way he does this is very effective, and makes you ask the question "what

Both of the films rely upon very good use of presentational devices to engage their audiences. In
Blair Witch Project, the use of camera is extremely important. All the filming was done by the
students themselves, to create the illusion that it really did happen and really was real. It Is therefore

also had the clever idea of making much of the filming in black and white, creating a slightly creepy

On the presentational front, "What Lies Beneath is very similar in comparison to "Blair Witch

The sounds in a film help categorize a film in to genre and franchises so that the audience can
recognize them easier, usually a specific melody and tone is used so that marketing campaigns are
more effective when adverts are played on TV. The Blair Witch (1999) had a more interesting and

importantly existentialism. It is intended to be a comedic drama. This is a rare genre, more rare than

It is no longer merely beautiful faces or skilled actors that seduce us. What grabs our attention at this
point, more than anything else, is the idea that whatever we are watching is actually happening to
someone. Of course, it is not always the case that what we think is real (on TV or in the movies) is
real, but the important thing is that we are willing to believe that it is real. Consider, thus, the Blair
Witch Project. How is it that this movie, which was so poorly produced that it is almost unbearable
to watch – our stomachs churn as the hand–held video camera is constantly tossed around amidst a
chorus of incessant, idiotic swearing – how is it that this movie was so wildly successful? Part of the
answer surely has to do with the fact that the movie blurs the distinction between fact and fiction,
between documentary and drama. Many people, including myself, were simply confused as to
whether or not the Blair Witch Project was a documentary. The fact that the acting and production
was so bad only seemed to confirm the suspicion that this was not acting. So we were willing to
believe that it was real, which is obviously what most of us wanted to believe. For we saw the

Essay On Clean Shaven
The genre for this film will be a psychological thriller. This film is about a college kid that is
schizophrenic, and throughout the film, the film will show the effects that schizophrenia has on
people. The film will have suspense, action and mystery to it that would cause people to stay
engaged with what is going on in the film. Clean, Shaven (Lodge Kerrigan, 1995) is a great example
of what this film will try to present, but in a different way than what Clean, Shaven (Lodge
Kerrigan, 1995) did in their film. My film however, will instead show how accepting schizophrenia
could be beneficial, when Clean, Shaven only showed the issue that are caused by this disease.
This film could also be classified as a horror film. The reason this film could be classified as a
horror film would be due to the world that Thomas will enter as his condition gets worse. Setting,
will be set in this world in the late 1600's to early 1700's in Salem. With a dark and eerie lighting
and foggy effect in this world. This world will never see sunlight, bringing to that spooky
characteristic. The Blair Witch Project (Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, 1999) is a great
example of how setting will be, with the constant fear of night or darkness, or the constant fear of
helplessness, that this film portrays. My film will use similar effects, lighting, ... Show more content

Documentary Conventions
Documentary is a genre that has the ability to provide visual evidence of reality by means of filmic
treatment of actuality. Intrinsically linked to the notion of 'truth', it relies on the mechanical
capability of the camera to capture an image of likeness. In a dynamic and flexible genre, the
possibilities are endless and as such, are constantly being redefined. Advances in technological
factors have driven the genre's complexity, expanding boundaries and allowing filmmakers the
opportunity to create more precise and accurate visual representations of reality.
The motion camera was first conceived allowing the establishment of film production companies;
technological limits meant films were silent and generally less than a minute in length. ... Show

It empowered films to have a newfound freedom from the problems associated with the use of a
post–synchronized soundtrack. In 1961, a portable sound recording device called the Nagra III,
became available (Kudelski, 1). First used in an investigative film called Chronique d'un éte (Morin
& Rouch, 1961) where the filmmaker posed a simple question to their subjects, 'Are you happy?'
The ability to record both the audio and visual responses in synchrony, rather than having to
manipulate sound in the postproduction process, gave rise to new documentary styles. The device
meant documentary filmmakers could more accurately capture and portray reality and consequently,
audiences were able to experience real events, people and spaces in real time. This technological
factor shaped the documentary genre into a now reliable source of information; displaying the

War Of The Worlds Analysis
I loved listening to the radio production of War of the Worlds. I have an affinity for radio
productions though, and I have an embarrassingly large library of them at home that I listen to with
my kids. Every time I hear about how people believed that earth was really being invaded, I'm
reminded of the 1999 release of the movie The Blair Witch Project, in which moviegoers were
convinced ahead of time (through excellent marketing) that the film was a real documentary
regarding paranormal activity. I don't think the reaction to the Wells radio production is any sillier
than the reaction to the movie I mentioned. As humans, I think we all desperately want to believe
that there are other worlds out there, whether that's a spiritual world, a world

The Sound Of Silence : The Aesthetics Of Silence In Horror
The Sound of Silence: The Aesthetics of Silence in Horror
Imagine you are sitting in a dark movie theater watching what critics say is the "scariest" movie of
the decade. You see your typical damsel in distress entering an abandoned building and you can see
a masked man in the distance but the character cannot. Everything is silent except the sound of her
footsteps walking in the dark. As the viewer, you are subconsciously waiting for the monster to
jump out and attack, you are waiting for the standard loud clash of music and then the monster
springs from behind the curtain.
But this film is different there is no sound and the screen is so dark you aren't sure where the
monster is. You wait and wait the tension building with each breath ... Show more content on

The absence of sound or music in Blair Witch Project, as well as no fancy Hollywood sound effects
(that could have been added to support a jump scare) is what made it authentic to audiences. This
means that any crackle or snap in the night was that much more terrifying. The director wanted to
keep the film authentic, as if a group of college students actually shot the footage. The raw and
unfiltered tone of The Blair Witch Project makes it much easier for the viewer to identify with the
situation the characters are in, it makes it that much more real. Carroll suggests that we are not
identifying with the characters instead we identify with situation and I agree.
Sound in film is like a blanket, warm and comforting. It helps us predict what is going to happen
next. When a filmmaker strips the scene of sound it can cause the audience to become tense and
uncomfortable. One could argue that silence doesn't exist because even in an empty room you could
still hear your heart beating.
Silence also has a way of finishing a story for us. My reference to the ending of film The Blair
Witch Project is a perfect example. When Heather goes down the stairs to find Mike standing in the
corner and what we perceive to be her falls to the ground we are left with no explanation. When a
movie ends with narrative it is easier to piece together the ending but in a silent room, we are left to
fill in the blanks ourselves. Viewers of the film are left with a bit of unease

Sorceress
Sorceress seems like my kind of flick. It's got what can only be described as an unhealthy amount of
90s nudity, witchcraft and Linda Blair scowling every other minute. It's directed by Chopping Mall
director Jim Wynorski, who also partook in directing numerous smutty flicks like Bare Wench
Project (a terrible life decision if there ever was one). The thing with Sorceress is that it is a terrible
film, there is no doubt about that. Nonetheless, what one might find terrible, someone else will
laugh their ass off in delight. Sorceress definitely has plenty of laugh out loud moments, be it the
soap opera quality acting, the soft core porn or the feeble attempts at a story. I watched Sorceress

ending. Jim Wynorski's ending decision feels like you wasted your time watching the movie.
BLU–RAY OPINION
Synapse Films has released Sorceress on Blu–ray with a pretty stunning 2K transfer. The film is also
released uncut, with all sex scenes intact (if they weren't, I assume the film would be 20 minutes
long). As for special features, you have two commentaries, one with director Jim Wynorski and the
other with Wynorski and Tom Savini. The first commentary is a bit more informative, whereas the
second one with Tom Savini is a laugh riot. Savini pretty much asks all the questions we as a viewer

"We do not need magic to transform our world. We carry all of the power we need inside ourselves

who is famous for the popular character, Harry Potter. With multiple books, nine movies, tons of

has struck the hearts of those from 1997 to present day. There are lots of critics in the world who

Many people feared witches for thousands of years, especially the people of Salem. From 1692 to
the beginning of 1693 young girls and women were put on trial for being "witches". The trials often
ended with a slow, painful death. Witches are commonly seen as ugly, old hags who wear black
clothes, black hats, and black pointy shoes. Many witches don't look like this though.
Many witches today were casual or gothic clothing. Some use magic for good luck, beauty
ointments, or other things. Witches are even made popular with movies and Television series such
as: Sabrina the Teenage witch, The Craft, Hocus Pocus, The Witches, Practical Magic, The Witches
of East wick, The Blair Witch Project, Bewitched, Wizard of Oz, and The Black Cauldron. I find it
magic and stuff pretty cool and I believe that Harry Potter does promote witchcraft, but not in a bad
way. It promotes the imagination to think that magic can do good deeds even if it also can be used
for evil.

The other works had no visual aid and the pages were restricted to words on every page. Afterlife
with Archie had dialogue to aid in the book, but was unique from the first page. The book used
different shades of red and blue that helped in setting the mood. The first page of the book is
blacked out with red paint splattered on it like blood, the words "This is how the end of the world
begins..."(Aguirre–Sacasa 1.) sets the mood for the book and gives the idea that this will be an
intense journey through the pages. "The Black Hole" is a short film and uses video and sound as the
only means of communication to the audience. There is no dialogue since the man in the film is the
only person in the office. This film relied heavily on using video to convey the message flickering
lights and dark shadows add a scary feeling in the film. All the other works we viewed had dialogue,
since this film did not it stood out among the others. Visualizing the horror lets the audience see
exactly what the author and artist envisioned. It allows the viewer to see the raw image the artist
wanted us to see. In other works, monsters and places are described to the viewer and the viewer can
make visual images, but that varies among every individual. Visual aid deletes the variation among
viewers and captures the horror the way it was

Narrative and Narration.
NARRATIVE AND NARRATION
Narrative and narration in films are the way in which the audience follows the plot. The difference
between narrative and narration is only really clear when both are understood properly.
Narrative is basically the way we see all the events in a film unfold. E.g. 'Blair Witch Project'. A
group of film students go into the woods to film a documentary about the myth of the Blair Witch.
What we see is the people film everything that they do. We see (in a nutshell) them get lost, get
scared and then looking at a wall.
Narration is the process through which a film conveys or withholds narrative information, the way
the story is told. Narration concerns the actual arrangement and presentation of the story in the ...

Oh no. Todorov also argues that narrative involves a transformation. The characters or the situations
are transformed through the progress of the disruption. E.g. Halloween. In this film Laurie Strode
starts out as a geeky teenager who is more concerned with her lessons than boys. "Shit, what, I
forgot my chemistry book". "Hey Laurie I just got you a date with that boy you like. Oh no please
tell me you didn't. I sure did. OK then you gotta ring him on the morning and cancel the whole
thing". But then at the end of the story (which concludes at the end of the sequel Halloween 2) she is
a much stronger character. This is emphasised with the character in Halloween H20 where we see
how much she has moved on from geeky teenager to a confident, strong, energetic mum.
Vladimir Propp believes that the characters in a film have a narrative function in the text. Characters
are there to help provide a structure for the text. He found eight basic characters who perform a
certain function. Following are the eight characters and with examples of their counterparts in some
famous films. The HERO. In 'The Matrix' Neo is the person who on a quest for something gets
drawn into a world of UN–reality and comes out the unlikely hero after being trained to realise the
truth. This is a common action/thriller genre film technique, because it helps the audience feel
related in a way to the hero because you realise that it could happen to anyone of us. This is used

Designing An Effective Advertising Poster Campaign For A...
The task was to create an effective advertising poster campaign for a specific film genre. I chose the
horror genre as I am very interested in the way they are put together and how they create an eerie
atmosphere by the technical codes (e.g. camera shots). For the primary research I created a
questionnaire that looked at all the different aspects used to create a successful horror poster. I based
my questionnaire around three different posters that were in the sub–genre that I wanted to research,
so I could see how effective the techniques were to the targeted audience. The movies were; Dark
Skies, The Blair Witch Project and Haunt. I asked specific questions about the camera shots and the
colour schemes used in the posters. The data collected from the questionnaire helped me identify the
most effective aspects of the horror posters. 90% of my sample said that they found a dark and gritty
colour scheme (generally black, grey, dirty white and blood reds) very effective as it" represented
the horror genre correctly". Another very effective technique was a contrast between light and
shadow. The audience found this effective because it created a "dark and unsettling atmosphere
throughout the poster". Everyone who completed the questionnaire said that this also complemented
the eeriness of the overall product. The questionnaire helped me identify the most prominent part of
the posters. All participants who filled out the form said that "the main image on the poster was the

Unfriended is a horror film played out in real time, solely through social media on a teenagers

premise, especially after the volume of lazy found footage films we've been inundated with since the

The strength of these stories is the way in which they intentionally blur the line between fiction and
reality, allowing them to remain festering in the back of your mind long after you've read them.
Arguably, much of The Blair Witch Project's success comes from the fact that it achieved this same
level of ambiguous authenticity; one couldn't help but wonder if maybe there really was such a thing
as a Blair Witch. Even Paranormal Activity, though it was never advertised as a 'true story', had a
gritty sort of legitimacy that let viewers almost believe they were watching footage of real
paranormal events. What ultimately prevents Unfriended from stepping up alongside these found
footage giants is the fact that it lacks what even creepypastas have in spades; for all that it's very
clever and ingeniously put together, at no point during Unfriended can you convince yourself that

What Is The Purpose Of The Blair Witch Project
The Blair Witch Project, shown in 1999 at the Sundance Film Festival, and later in theaters, is the
story of three student filmmakers who decide to make a documentary about "The Blair Witch" in the
woods near Burkitsville, Maryland. The film was very effective in the way it was advertised, first
through the infamous "stickmen" and missing posters, to an internet campaign increasing the rumors
that the movie was an actual documentary; if it had been advertised in any different way, it is
possible that it never would have left the festival circuit. After the screening, due to the response, the
filmmakers made a deal with Artisan Entertainment to distribute the film. The film was said to be
terrifying, and it was the first of the genre of "home–made movies", such as Paranormal Activity

How Do Genre Affect The Culture Of Horror Films
From bloody massacres to demonic possessions, the genre of horror has come a long way, todays
horror movies have a variety of things in common with horror movies from the early 1900s.
Although horror movies have been around for decades, they've changed through out the years. From
extreme gore and gushing blood to edge full suspenseful horror; horror movies have different and
unique styles. Described as an intense feeling of fear, shock, or disgust (Horror Film History 2001).
Horror is an ancient work of art that formally originated through story telling amongst different

play it safe by playing to people's nostalgia and rehashing older IP's. Unfortunately, this strategy
reflects poorly on the industry. For one, it shows that there's a lack of originality in Hollywood.
Furthermore, most of these revivals prove to be vastly inferior to the source material, repelling
would–be new fans, and upsetting already established ones. Hopefully for fans (such as Patty and

The Blair Witch Project Essay
A Critical Reflection of The Blair Witch Project
Perhaps one of the most influential modern horror films, The Blair Witch Project pioneered an
entirely new subgenre of horror films in 1999– the found footage film. The Blair Witch Project uses
simple yet effective set design and dream like sound editing to highlight the gradual mental decay of
main character, Heather Donahue over the course of the story to illustrate a dramatic shift in the
orientation. This, along with the first hand experience offered by point of view camera positioning
allows the audience to experience the terror associated with horror and the demonic alongside the
main characters as the film progresses As the main characters– Heather Donahue, Josh Leonard, and

Most of the scenes rely on the setting rather than any type of design or manipulation, allowing the
naturally frightening location of the secluded forest to contribute to the terror felt by both the
characters and the audience. When scene design is heavily incorporated, such as in the final scene in
the witch's house, the design is expressed through subtleties that have been established earlier in the
film. Symbols and children's handprints on the walls of the decaying house imply that the house that
Mike and Heather find themselves in during the last scene is in fact the house that the children from
the townspeople's stories were killed in.
The first person point of view camera angle also allows the audience to experience the strange and
terrifying events that take place within the film by allowing them to adopt the perspective of the
characters in a way that cannot be accomplished with traditional film making techniques. This
adoption of perspective allows the audience to identify with the characters on a personal level,
making them open to the notions of orientations and ideas that seem ridiculous, such as continuing
to film regardless of the terrifying events that take

How Does Technology Affect Independent Films
How has the role of technology affected independent films and their film–making process?
The distribution of film has changed phenomenally during the last 10 years. Independent film is an
area of production where filmmakers produce their films independently, outside of the studio
system. Many argue that cultural value is taken from independent films whereas commercial
releases follow the same narrative structure. Often, mainstream cinema will follow a common
narrative arc which fits into the equilibrium theory e.g. Protagonist is faced with a challenge, a stage
of disequilibrium occurs, equilibrium is restored and the film has a traditional happy ending.
Independent film's niche audiences enjoy the creative freedom that comes with genre. This freedom
has been extended by new technology, giving filmmakers the ability to fulfil their artistic vision.
Advances in technical equipment have benefitted the film–making process for independent
directors, who are now able to create high quality films on a low budget. In addition to advances in

The Blair Witch Project was completely unlike anything else that had ever come before it – whether
it be Halloween, Psycho, or Friday the 13th. In essence, The Blair Watch Project should have been
the dawn of a new era. But, it wasn't. Well, not right away, at least.
Instead, the floundering slasher era continued on for some time, eventually giving way to the torture
era (see the Saw franchise) – and then, the haunted house era. Now, roughly 16 years after the fact,
the found footage documentary style of horror storytelling has fully enveloped the genre – as if The

Analysis Of ' Blair Witch Project '
Semiotic Analysis on Blair Witch Project Blair Witch Project is regarded the first of its time, a
horror film in a documentary–style movie. The release of the film in 1999 marked a new phase in
the creation of films. The Blair Witch Project set a benchmark for production of films of different
genres, especially for horror movies. The fixtures of the genre, horror films, have long being
characterized by the presence of graphical violence and torture by villains like monsters, ghosts,
demons and madmen or psychopaths. Prior to the release of the Blair Witch Project, most horror
movies were developing in many ways especially in the storyline and justifications of the
supernatural characters and scenes. Blair Witch Project was very special in many ways, using
mystery, suspense and foreshadowing to create the intense fear and scare in the audience. Since the
1980s, the horror movies have changed dramatically. With every new experience through
innovation, in the film industry, the horror films are expected to change with time, and in a whole
new dimension. The film Blair Witch Project, produced in 1999, has had an incredible impact and

death or our loss of identity. Watching a horror film gives an opening into the scary world, into a
passage for the essence of fear itself, but not really being in danger.
Common story lines and plots that writers create when making a movie are the common clichés all
horror movies will generally have. Like parents never understanding the child when something is
about to happen, or when the character is home alone they will call out to see if anybody is there.
Most horror movies include mythical creatures such as ghosts, vampires, and zombies. A horror
movies tradition is to include a large amount of violence and gore into the plot. Though the genre
has its own style, Horror film often overlap into Thriller and Science–Fiction genre (Alien, 1979).
Technical codes in horror movies commonly builds up the tension in the scenes being filmed, Using
Long takes (Hostel, 2005). All Horror movies use the key of low key lighting very commonly in
Documentary horror genre to enhance the suspense of what is occurring (the Blair Witch Project,
1999). This narrative structure has been followed accurately in (Blair Witch Project) where three
film students travel to Maryland to

Technology Is Killing Movies Essay
A car peels into a dark road. The sound of thunder and rain scare the passengers inside the car. The
driver reads a map drenched with water as the paper falls apart. The passengers are convinced they
are lost, but the driver refuses to admit it. He ignores his gut feeling and he takes a road down the
wrong path. They head into a world of darkness, mystery and the unknown as the car disappears into
the night. This premise sounds similar to the tropes seen in a horror story.
If this were in real life, the story would be cut short, and we would not explore the rest of this story.
We would never find out what happens after the car headed on the dark road or what happens in the
darkness. This inclusion of electronic devices and internet, ruin ... Show more content on

Period pieces and stories set in previous decades can get away with lacking devices such as laptops,
mobile phones and access to the internet. Stories that take place in the present, must give an
explanation to why the technology is not used. Someone would use a mobile phone to call for
assistance if the story aimed to seem realistic. The characters could look up maps for the area and
walk safely out of the woods. Storytelling through films have evolved and changed through the
years. The advancement of technology has changed the medium of storytelling, affecting mystery,
predictability and the power an individual has in both content and the creation of stories. Motion
pictures reflect and impact aspects of our society. Films from the past reflect the times of previous
eras. With technology driving forward, we are able to make films cheaper and with better visual
effects. The internet and portable hand held devices have become essential tools in our day to day
life. These tools aid us in reality, but can also conflict with the way stories unfold. Since the late
1990s, films have incorporated devices into their films. The Blair Witch Project was an independent
film shot on a hand–held camera. The internet provided a source to make audiences aware of the
film. This has led to the movie selling incredibly well and according to Box Office Mojo, making
over $248 million at the box office.
The internet allows us to communicate by using email, social

Long Range Goals

  • 1. Long Range Goals Mission( 5–15 year Long range Goal) I want to be the the "guy" in film industry. When people see or hear my name attached to a film; they'll know its going to be epic. I want to own my own production company, where we make money, and groundbreaking films. I expect a Hybrid of career advancement, where I will be rising– within, and learning, then making my move towards my own company once I have the capital, friends, and buzz in the industry. I would plan to start out with horror movies as they are typically low–budget, which should make financing a little less daunting. Once I get my first breakout film, similar to Paranormal Activity or The Blair Witch Project, I want to branch out to different genres, as well as produce experimental films and projects. First Leadership position (3–5 years) Production. Producing my own film, or even show, would give me both the buzz, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think that the 90–minute feature–film format may be replaced with something shorter, perhaps 50– 70 minutes. Perhaps Double–features and stuff like that may becoming "retro–cool" again. Furthermore, players like Netflix and Amazon are creating environments where the theatre will become obsolete. The digital age/// the internet creates opportunities to directly reach fans and consumers, effectively removing much of the "middle–men" jobs. (Travel Agent, Real–estate, etc.) Virtual–reality also poses a significant threat/opportunity towards us within the creative industry, especially us who use audio and video. The eyes and ears translate what I create. Films are good at immersing people into created universes and stories. However, VR, Interaction, and sensory feelings like touch and smell may be included in the standard formula for immersive entertainment. There's also wildcard factors such as death, I lose my arms and eyes. Or on a positive note, I could win the lotto, which would propel me towards my end–goal a lot faster. ... • 2. Among New American Ghost Cinema, one can witness the... Among New American Ghost Cinema, one can witness the re–emergence of an interesting sub– genre: the Found Footage Cinema. We can observe this new fascination in many modern horror films such as 2008's Cloverfield, 2009's Paranormal Activity, and 2011's Apollo 18. Digging below the surface of a literal reading of some of these movies, one finds a genre that can be far more intelligent than what meets the public eye. For example, within Cloverfield, the screams and images of smoke heaving through the city of Manhattan hint at post–September 11th. To understand the growing popularity of Found Footage Cinema and why we discover these political undertones, this paper will examine The Blair Witch Project (1999, Myrick and Sanchez) in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wood conceived a theory that proposed the monster in the horror genre embodied "all that which a society represses." From Wood's position, one can conclude "all that which a society represses" relates primarily to those features (social, political, sexual, and racial) which did not fit into Bourgeois capitalist America. He argues that this repression is the key to understanding the inner workings of the modern American mind. The key to Wood's argument is the difference he makes between basic and surplus repression: "Basic repression is universal, necessary, and inescapable. It is what makes possible our development from an uncoordinated animal capable of little beyond screaming and convulsions into a human being; it is bound up with the ability to accept the postponement of gratification with the development of our thought and memory process, of our capacity for self–control, and of our recognition and consideration of other people." Surplus repression, in contrast, are those constraints imposed upon people by specific cultures since "it is the process whereby people are conditioned from earliest infancy to take on predetermined roles within a given culture. (In contemporary America) thus, surplus repression makes us into monogamous heterosexual bourgeois patriarchal capitalists." As a cultural ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Positive Impact Of Social Media On The Movie Industry Ever since the successful marketing campaign of "The Blair Witch Project", studios have progressively marketed their films in social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other forms of websites. This has become more apparent in recent years where films even have their own social media accounts to share and update fans with anything related to the film itself whether it be interviews with the cast, trailers, movie posters, or just to simply interact with their fans. Some movie critics claim that social media is ruining the movie industry because films tend to get too much coverage which leads to spoilers getting revealed before the film releases. However, I believe that social media is not only a positive for the movie industry it's an innovation because it's a cheap and effective way to generate buzz for a film, it allows the fans to feel more connected with the movie they're planning to see, and individuals can easily voice their opinion about a flick whether it be positive or negative. Have you ever noticed that people nowadays instinctively go to any social media outlet, most notably YouTube to check out all the new movie trailers released for upcoming films, if so then you have already detected that movie studios tend to do this in a regular basis because it's a cheap and effective way to produce talk for their future films. The most recent example of this would have to go to Marvel Studios and the release of the first trailer for "Avengers: Infinity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay The Relationship Between Producers and Audiences The relationship between producers and audiences Audience research, producer response to research and audience targeting A producer when beginning pre–production or even before will most likely look at some form of survey's which would include things like possible cast members for the film and the amount of audience that would want to see possibly be interested in the genre. They will then take this to the writers and director of the particular film and they will make amendments to how the survey has come out. A producer will also look at the success of recent films of the same type; this is visible in recent times with the resurgence of vampire films following the success of twilight saga this has lead to TV series and films ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A producer who knows that their film doesn't have a lot of money or publicity would use a film festival to get both of these things. Also these films will most likely be in art house cinemas but if one is particularly successful then this could move to multiplex cinemas the troll hunter is one of those films that has crossed the brigde from art house to multiplex and is now being shown in over 20 vue cinemas in the UK, the producer did this by getting the film publicity from channel 4's sister channel E4 and making a competition for a private screening this made the film sort after which then lead to interest from multiplex cinemas. But for films that won't need that sort of publicity will have a big Hollywood premiere that would most likely have a segment on TV showing the premiere and would include interviews with the cast, director and any other notable person involved with the film. Celebrities from outside of the film will go also to show the films quality and also so that they themselves can get publicity, films like this will almost always be shown in multiplex cinemas this is the same for Cars 2 but will probably have this kind of showing but because it's a childs film the TV shows and so on will most probably be shown on kids TV most obviously the Disney ... • 5. Observational Horror Film Techniques In the recent year, new subgenres of movies has been created due to the exploration of new technologies and total reconstruction of the genre. One such genre that has been gaining a lot of popularity is "Observational Horror". "Observational horror films are those that appropriate the aesthetic of observational documentary cinema's handheld camerawork" (Raimondo, 2014, p. 66). This aesthetic of the camera playing a big part in the movie and the movie being shot by a character mimics how a video would be shot in a real situation, thus making the events of the movie more relatable and horrifying. It possesses many qualities that make the movies more engaging and frightening. Therefore, in this essay I will be analysing 2 films (The Blair Witch ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Tunnel is an Australian movie about a journalist and her camera crew who go in to an abandoned underground train system in search story to expose the government after watching a YouTube video about teenagers who went missing in the tunnels. Upon the disappearance of their sound guy, the crew soon realise that they are not alone in the tunnels. The movie is shot in many different ways. But the main idea of this movie is that it is a documentary about what happened to the journalist and her crew in the tunnel, this is evident from the scenes of the interviews from the only two survivors from the voyage. But most of the movie consists of footage shot by the crew themselves when they were in the tunnels. The movie also consists of a few shots that seem like they were taken from CCTV cameras in the stations. In comparison to The Blair Witch Project, this movie is a bit different, because we find the creature that is creating the chaos in the tunnels early. However, what it is, its origin and its purpose (other than killing people) is not revealed. So it still supports Raimondo's argument that the epistephilia of the story is engaging the viewer to know more about the creature. Additionally, "Unlike documentary cinema, the viewers become vulnerable as they scan and interpret the images, which consequently introduces the possibility of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Unfriended: Movie Analysis A story of six teenagers was told entirely through a limiting view of a laptop screen as six friends face bizarre outcomes from their pasts darkest secrets and lies. One night, the six friends, Ken (Jacob Wysocki), Adam (William Peltz), Jess (Renee Olstead), Val (Courtney Halverson), Mitch (Moses Storm), and the main character, Blaire (Shelley Hennig), are all on Skype as per their usual hangout. Conquicidently this night is an exact year after their so–called friend, Laura Barns (Heather Sossaman) committed suicide. Communicating to Blaire via facebook and skype, Laura's ghost slowly turns all the friends against each other, unravels their deceptions, and creates fear that eventually leads to absurd murderous outcomes to all the teenagers. This all came to be because of the friends publicly shaming Laura by posting drunk videos of her and bullying her online. • 7. Blair Witch Project Analysis The Blair Witch Project is a highly successful and widely innovative independent film that was released on July 30th, 1999. The film followed three student filmmakers who aimed to create a documentary about a local legend called the Blair Witch. While the film alluded to various hallmarks of the horror film genre, it was groundbreaking in its marketing strategy, the use of found footage, and cinematography. In many ways, The Blair Witch Project adheres to various tropes and traditions of the horror movie genre. The film includes some characteristics of the Italian Giallo genre. In both genres, the killer is unknown and unseen to the audience. The giallo "underscores the theme of sight and the ability to see clearly" (Bondanella 381). In ... In The Blair Witch Project, the protagonists are reported missing but we never see what actually happened to them. The town begins exhaustive searches to find the students. The witch is never seen and presumably survives the film to haunt the woods again. Like many other postmodern horror films, The Blair Witch Project plays on insider knowledge that the audience has about the horror genre. The audiences know not to run into abandoned houses, yell in the forest, or run away in different directions but the protagonists do not. The audience then engages with the film using their insider knowledge by yelling or commenting at the main characters to avoid the pitfalls of the horror genre. The film also utilizes what Isabel Pinedo calls "the pleasure of not–seeing". She mentions that, "The blocked vision produced by the film heightens the intensity of the horror by refusing to show the terrifying spectacle" (54). The Blair Witch Project utilizes blocked vision through the use of the camcorder. In the film, the viewer is only able to see what the protagonists see. In the darkness of the night in the woods, the protagonists and the audience are unable to see what is terrorizing the main characters in the night. In this sense, we express the same anxieties and fears of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Movies such as I Know What You Did Last Summer and Urban Legend all followed the same teen slasher format. Nothing is being left up to the movie viewer's imagination anymore. Everything for the past thirty years was spelled out and given to the viewer, leaving the identity of the killer as the only form of mystery. The genre of horror was losing a very important battle. Not knowing this movie was fake made the general public even more scared. The film starts out showing the enthusiastic students shopping for food and acting as if there were going on a fun hike for the day. As the movie progresses the students finally get into the woods were the Blair Witch is supposed to reside. As time passed and night fell they set up camp. Through out the night mysterious sounds seemed to be happening all around the tent. Not once did the students ever see anything, thus the viewers of the movie did not either. Nothing was presented up front. This same pattern was followed through the whole movie. The Blair Witch Project has no sex or even sexual tension, no music of any kind, no demonic power tools. No prowling, voyeuristic camera from the killer's point of view; this movie is about the victims and the victims they make of each other. There are no shock cuts to the monster. They act and talk in dialogue making the film seem real we can also relate to this film if we have ever filmed ourselves hanging out with our friends as this is simply what this film does. Propp's theory applies to this film the villain or malefactor being the Blair witch, there is no hero as the characters end in their bloody deaths in a small house, the donor is the sources from the locals about the Blair witch, the princess is the three teenagers, the false hero is the girl as she tries but fails, the Blair witch is also the dispatcher. • 10. Examples Of Guerrilla Marketing Guerrilla Marketing is an advertising strategy that focuses on low–cost unconventional marketing tactics to yield results. The term guerrilla marketing was coined by Jay Conrad Levinson in 1984 in his book 'Guerrilla Advertising'. The term was inspired by guerrilla warfare which became popular during the Peninsular War, when the Spanish people rose against the Napoleonic troops and fought against a highly superior army using the guerrilla strategy. The term "guerrilla" was used in English as early as 1809, to describe the fighters (e.g., "The town was taken by the guerrillas"), and also (as in Spanish) to denote a group or band of such fighters. Guerrilla warfare tactics includes ambushes, sabotage, raids and elements of surprise. Much like guerrilla warfare, guerrilla marketing uses the same sort of tactics in the marketing industry. Guerrilla marketing originally was a concept aimed towards small businesses with a small budget, but this didn't stop big businesses from adopting the same ideology. One of the most famous examples of guerrilla marketing is The, Blair Witch Project. • 11. The Importance Of Setting Conventions In Horror Movies Paragraph 2: Setting conventions play a huge part within the horror genre. Since horror first existed it has been set in ghostly abandoned castles with spooky dark dungeons, gloomy forests and spine–chilling secret passageways. Since these, settings in the horror genre has evolved into a more terrifying definition of scary. In horror movies today we mainly see old, haunted, broken down houses set in isolated forests exactly like the new house the family moves into in 'The Conjuring' or like in the horror movie 'Halloween', set in a neighbourhood during the night time. Horror has moved into these more sophisticated ideas of creepy and scary as the setting is more relatable to everyday life, and takes a toll on the audience's psychological mind set to start ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This gives the audience a full picture of exactly what's happening as well as giving the film variety so it doesn't become boring. Hand held video shots have also become increasingly popular after the movie 'The Blair Witch Project'. Most common in the 'Paranormal Activity' series, the handheld camera gives the film better point of view shots similar to what you would see in real life if the same instance was to occur. This then also creates tension as you are only able to see what the camera is focusing on not what maybe be lurking out of shot that would normally be viewed in any other filming convention. Tension can also be created as fear is often shown due to frantic camera shaking during a climactic scene in which the protagonist fears his or her life, increasing the suspense for the audience. Cinematography plays a huge part within a film as gives certain messages within the shot type whether it quick editing, close ups, long shots, or handheld action all of these techniques give the film it's alarming scare. • 12. The Realist Aesthetics Adopted By The Verite Horror Subgenre As Stephen Price stated, "digital imaging technologies are rapidly transforming nearly all phases of contemporary film production. Film–makers today storyboard, shoot and edit their films in conjunction with the computer manipulation of images" (Price, 1996, pg.27). Since digital imaging technologies have changed the very nature of film production, it is important to understand and examine the wider effects these new modes of filmmaking have on spectators. With this in mind, the following essay argues that the realist aesthetics adopted by the verité horror subgenre not only work to entice fear among audiences by presenting the events occurring on screen as real, but in doing so, also reveal anxieties about the truthfulness of the image that have been heightened by the ubiquitous incorporation of digital imaging technology in contemporary film production. This will be demonstrated first by providing a brief history about the verité horror subgenre. Once this is completed, this essay will examine how the realist aesthetics adopted by the genre's most notorious and commercially successful films, The Blair Witch Project (Myrick, 1999) and Paranormal Activity (Peli, 2007), reflect postmodern anxieties about the truthfulness of visual representations in film. Verité horror, also commonly referred to as found footage horror, can be considered as a horror subgenre of film that adopts documentary–style techniques to create the impression that the images presented onscreen are ... The advent of such freedom in the business caused many smaller entities to produce small budget films which packed a big punch. To counter this new wave large studios had to find a moneymaking venture that the smaller producers couldn't go up against; namely blockbuster films. "The Black Hole" is a short film and uses video and sound as the only means of communication to the audience. There is no dialogue since the man in the film is the only person in the office. This film relied heavily on using video to convey the message flickering lights and dark shadows add a scary feeling in the film. All the other works we viewed had dialogue, since this film did not it stood out among the others. Visualizing the horror lets the audience see exactly what the author and artist envisioned. It allows the viewer to see the raw image the artist wanted us to see. In other works, monsters and places are described to the viewer and the viewer can make visual images, but that varies among every individual. Visual aid deletes the variation among viewers and captures the horror the way it was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. Narrative and Narration. NARRATIVE AND NARRATION Narrative and narration in films are the way in which the audience follows the plot. The difference between narrative and narration is only really clear when both are understood properly. Narrative is basically the way we see all the events in a film unfold. E.g. 'Blair Witch Project'. A group of film students go into the woods to film a documentary about the myth of the Blair Witch. What we see is the people film everything that they do. We see (in a nutshell) them get lost, get scared and then looking at a wall. Narration is the process through which a film conveys or withholds narrative information, the way the story is told. Narration concerns the actual arrangement and presentation of the story in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Oh no. Todorov also argues that narrative involves a transformation. The characters or the situations are transformed through the progress of the disruption. E.g. Halloween. In this film Laurie Strode starts out as a geeky teenager who is more concerned with her lessons than boys. "Shit, what, I forgot my chemistry book". "Hey Laurie I just got you a date with that boy you like. Oh no please tell me you didn't. I sure did. OK then you gotta ring him on the morning and cancel the whole thing". But then at the end of the story (which concludes at the end of the sequel Halloween 2) she is a much stronger character. This is emphasised with the character in Halloween H20 where we see how much she has moved on from geeky teenager to a confident, strong, energetic mum. Vladimir Propp believes that the characters in a film have a narrative function in the text. Characters are there to help provide a structure for the text. He found eight basic characters who perform a certain function. Following are the eight characters and with examples of their counterparts in some famous films. The HERO. In 'The Matrix' Neo is the person who on a quest for something gets drawn into a world of UN–reality and comes out the unlikely hero after being trained to realise the truth. This is a common action/thriller genre film technique, because it helps the audience feel related in a way to the hero because you realise that it could happen to anyone of us. This is used ... • 29. Designing An Effective Advertising Poster Campaign For A... The task was to create an effective advertising poster campaign for a specific film genre. I chose the horror genre as I am very interested in the way they are put together and how they create an eerie atmosphere by the technical codes (e.g. camera shots). For the primary research I created a questionnaire that looked at all the different aspects used to create a successful horror poster. I based my questionnaire around three different posters that were in the sub–genre that I wanted to research, so I could see how effective the techniques were to the targeted audience. The movies were; Dark Skies, The Blair Witch Project and Haunt. I asked specific questions about the camera shots and the colour schemes used in the posters. The data collected from the questionnaire helped me identify the most effective aspects of the horror posters. 90% of my sample said that they found a dark and gritty colour scheme (generally black, grey, dirty white and blood reds) very effective as it" represented the horror genre correctly". Another very effective technique was a contrast between light and shadow. The audience found this effective because it created a "dark and unsettling atmosphere throughout the poster". Everyone who completed the questionnaire said that this also complemented the eeriness of the overall product. The questionnaire helped me identify the most prominent part of the posters. All participants who filled out the form said that "the main image on the poster was the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The strength of these stories is the way in which they intentionally blur the line between fiction and reality, allowing them to remain festering in the back of your mind long after you've read them. Arguably, much of The Blair Witch Project's success comes from the fact that it achieved this same level of ambiguous authenticity; one couldn't help but wonder if maybe there really was such a thing as a Blair Witch. Even Paranormal Activity, though it was never advertised as a 'true story', had a gritty sort of legitimacy that let viewers almost believe they were watching footage of real paranormal events. What ultimately prevents Unfriended from stepping up alongside these found footage giants is the fact that it lacks what even creepypastas have in spades; for all that it's very clever and ingeniously put together, at no point during Unfriended can you convince yourself that you're watching an account of true events. What Is The Purpose Of The Blair Witch Project The Blair Witch Project, shown in 1999 at the Sundance Film Festival, and later in theaters, is the story of three student filmmakers who decide to make a documentary about "The Blair Witch" in the woods near Burkitsville, Maryland. The film was very effective in the way it was advertised, first through the infamous "stickmen" and missing posters, to an internet campaign increasing the rumors that the movie was an actual documentary; if it had been advertised in any different way, it is possible that it never would have left the festival circuit. After the screening, due to the response, the filmmakers made a deal with Artisan Entertainment to distribute the film. How Do Genre Affect The Culture Of Horror Films From bloody massacres to demonic possessions, the genre of horror has come a long way, todays horror movies have a variety of things in common with horror movies from the early 1900s. Although horror movies have been around for decades, they've changed through out the years. From extreme gore and gushing blood to edge full suspenseful horror; horror movies have different and unique styles. Described as an intense feeling of fear, shock, or disgust (Horror Film History 2001). Horror is an ancient work of art that formally originated through story telling amongst different cultures. Many film critics and fans have long complained about the overabundance of remakes that the entertainment industry has been putting out for the past few years. It is said that film and television companies are afraid to take risks on new projects, so they play it safe by playing to people's nostalgia and rehashing older IP's. Unfortunately, this strategy reflects poorly on the industry. For one, it shows that there's a lack of originality in Hollywood. Furthermore, most of these revivals prove to be vastly inferior to the source material, repelling would–be new fans, and upsetting already established ones. The Blair Witch Project Essay A Critical Reflection of The Blair Witch Project Perhaps one of the most influential modern horror films, The Blair Witch Project pioneered an entirely new subgenre of horror films in 1999– the found footage film. The Blair Witch Project uses simple yet effective set design and dream like sound editing to highlight the gradual mental decay of main character, Heather Donahue over the course of the story to illustrate a dramatic shift in the orientation. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of the scenes rely on the setting rather than any type of design or manipulation, allowing the naturally frightening location of the secluded forest to contribute to the terror felt by both the characters and the audience. When scene design is heavily incorporated, such as in the final scene in the witch's house, the design is expressed through subtleties that have been established earlier in the film. Symbols and children's handprints on the walls of the decaying house imply that the house that Mike and Heather find themselves in during the last scene is in fact the house that the children from the townspeople's stories were killed in. The first person point of view camera angle also allows the audience to experience the strange and terrifying events that take place within the film by allowing them to adopt the perspective of the characters in a way that cannot be accomplished with traditional film making techniques. This adoption of perspective allows the audience to identify with the characters on a personal level, making them open to the notions of orientations and ideas that seem ridiculous, such as continuing to film regardless of the terrifying events that take ... • 35. How Does Technology Affect Independent Films How has the role of technology affected independent films and their film–making process? The distribution of film has changed phenomenally during the last 10 years. Independent film is an area of production where filmmakers produce their films independently, outside of the studio system. Many argue that cultural value is taken from independent films whereas commercial releases follow the same narrative structure. Often, mainstream cinema will follow a common narrative arc which fits into the equilibrium theory e.g. Protagonist is faced with a challenge, a stage of disequilibrium occurs, equilibrium is restored and the film has a traditional happy ending. Independent film's niche audiences enjoy the creative freedom that comes with genre. This freedom has been extended by new technology, giving filmmakers the ability to fulfil their artistic vision. Alright, fine, I don't remember the day, month, or even the place – but I at least had the terrifying sensation and unpredictability of it firmly and snugly etched into my memory. It was so inexplicably real that it nearly scared the pants off me (no, I can't recall if I was actually wearing pants), The Blair Witch Project was completely unlike anything else that had ever come before it – whether it be Halloween, Psycho, or Friday the 13th. Instead, the floundering slasher era continued on for some time, eventually giving way to the torture era (see the Saw franchise) – and then, the haunted house era. • 38. Horror Genre Films Horror Genre Essay Horror Genre Films are unsettling films that are created to frighten and panic the audience. They are there to invoke our hidden worst fears yet entertaining the audience. They deal with our most undiscovered fears, our nightmares, and our vulnerability, our terror of the unknown, our fear of death or our loss of identity. Watching a horror film gives an opening into the scary world, into a passage for the essence of fear itself, but not really being in danger. Common story lines and plots that writers create when making a movie are the common clichés all horror movies will generally have. Like parents never understanding the child when something is about to happen, or when the character is home alone they will call out to see if anybody is there. Most horror movies include mythical creatures such as ghosts, vampires, and zombies. A horror movies tradition is to include a large amount of violence and gore into the plot. Though the genre has its own style, Horror film often overlap into Thriller and Science–Fiction genre (Alien, 1979).
