Working Title:
Hell Bent
Audience:
My production will appeal to both Genders due to the fantasy element that is running throughout it
all. The fantasy element would traditionally appeal to the male demographic, particularly due to the
dark and graphic realism that is contained within the film. The Male protagonist is smart, witty and
also a nihilist; this will appeal to the Male demographic because damaged Male characters
fascinate Men. The main Protagonist also is progressive within the society that he lives in, this will
appeal to the Female demographic who will appreciate the progressive views of the Protagonist.
Even though my Film specifically will appeal more to a Male demographic, the Female
demographic will be interested more in my supplementary piece which will contain information
regarding the future which will show a strong female protagonist who battles against adversity in a
male dominated society. The Age demographic for the film will be 18-24, this is the ideal age
because at this age both Men and Women tend to become more liberal and are very interested in
stories about people who fight against their society. The sexuality of the main protagonist will start
off as a heterosexual but will change as the story progresses. This again will be talked about in the
supplementary radio piece. If I had to give ‘Hell Bent’ a social target audience I would say that the
film would attract an ABC1 social class and this would be for a few reasons. Firstly the show is
likely to be broadcasted on a non-terrestrial channel, which means you are going to need some
disposable income to subscribe to something like Sky or Netflix. More specifically the lower middle
class because they are more likely to relate to the adversity that the characters within the film
experience. Another reason would be the sort of TV that the lower class is more likely to like.
Reality TV such as ‘TOWIE’ is likely to interest a lower class The film will attract a balanced
psychographic due to their goals as achievers but also because of their lack of belief in humanity;
my film will show the worst of what humanity is capable of. The achievers will be fascinated in the
power that some people posses within the short and will reinstate their own beliefs of power.
When it comes to audience as well it will entice people who are interested in Religion and will
attack the preconception of what a Deity is. When it comes to people’s religious beliefs within a
Western audience they tend to split into 3 categories: Christian, Atheist and Agnostic. The short
film will definitely peak the interests of atheists who will find the behaviour of the Deity within ‘Hell
Bent’ satirical of the morality of ‘God’ (for a Western audience which will be the mainstream
audience) and the paradoxical statements regarding his morality; for example how can God be
omniscience, omnibenevolent and omnipotent at the same time? For Agnostic people and
hopefully some Christians will be able to look at the film more objectively and understand that this
is about power and how power and anger can corrupt anyone. Agnostic people and liberal
Christians will also understand that this isn’t a direct insult at their beliefs and that ‘Hell Bent’ is set
in a separate universe and is just taking inspiration from Religion in our World.
Using Denis McQuail’s Uses and Gratifications Theory I would say that people would use this
piece of media to reinforce their own personal values; this means that people would watch it and
make themselves believe more strongly that they’re correct in what they believe. They would also
use this for escapism but in the same way that people watch ‘Game of Thrones’, not to escape
necessarily to a better place but instead to a place that interests you. I would also say that ‘Hell
Bent’ would have a degree of social empathy; although this is a fantasy world it is grounded in the
past of our own male dominated society. A lot of people of both genders can relate to that and the
cases like Harvey Weinstein in Hollywood where Men use their power over Women makes the
society within Hell Bent even more identifiable than ever.
Rationale:
Throughout the year I have been taught many skills that were completely unknown to me at the
start of the year. The most important of these for progressing my career was learning how to use
‘Adobe Premiere Pro’; I have learned how to edit a selection of short clips and make it into a
cohesive short film. I have also learned a lot about both audio and video transitions, which can be
done within ‘Premiere Pro’. I have also learnt how to use ‘After Effects’, which means I can use
effects such as digital matte paintings, and painting out. These effects also will use ‘Photoshop’,
which I have also learnt how to use. I will also use Photoshop to create a Poster; this is something
I have already done this year in the Irn-Bru project and also within the Print rotation. My knowledge
of using ‘Premiere Pro’ throughout the year in the Irn-Bru project but also the Short Film rotation

will allow me to use ‘Audition’ when creating my Radio interview. Although I haven’t previously
used this software, it is similar to ‘Premiere Pro’ but is merely designed more for radio so luckily
my knowledge of other editing software will really help me here.
Nearly every rotation that we have done this year has assisted me in both helping me discover
where my talents within media best lie. I always felt the least comfortable on doing video game
content so I have decided to not do that. I feel most comfortable doing film so that is what my focus
will be. I will also implement some print that I have done as well provided I can given the time
constraints.
Project Concept:
My concept is an advertising campaign for a brand new TV show that will be about a main
protagonist living in what appears to be a Utopia at first, but in reality it is a regressive sexist
society by today’s standards and completely disregards free will. The protagonist over time
becomes nihilistic and progressive because of his leader (an impotent God) who punishes him for
the murder of his son. The punishment that is bestowed upon the protagonist by the leader out of
anger is that the leader generates scenarios in which the protagonist is forced into the mind of a
character where he knows nothing of the life he really lives and believes his situation of extreme
adversity/pain to be his life until the leader stops it and he continues living in the ‘Utopia’ but also
with all the pain and trauma he experiences when he was in the situation. The leader is also
inadvertently destroying the ‘Utopia’ because he is taking his focus off of the World the God is
supposed to control. The ‘Utopia’ begins to dwindle because the world that the leader controls acts
as a big generator that feeds off of complete devoutness of the people; however this devoutness
had to be of a puritanical nature. The leader’s lack of attention on this World (generator) causes
many bad things to happen in both that world but also the ‘Utopia’.
This story concept will be set in an abandoned barn near where I live, most of the filming will be
set there as well apart from some scenes which are set outside and then another final shot that will
be filmed in another outdoor location. After the short film I will also do a radio show where the
creator will be interviewed to explain the concept and try to entice people listening; this will act as a
way of being able to help explain the concept to the audience in a way that will feel smooth and not
like an exposition dump which would make the audience feel overloaded with information. If I have
time I will also make a poster to advertise the video that will be put on YouTube.
For this project I am going to need to do research for similar projects. Firstly I will research a
couple of fantasy films/TV shows, this will help my research by looking at similar products to which
I could gain some inspiration from. I will also need some form of research on radio shows which
will help me to understand how to make a compelling radio show. Finally if I have time I need to
look at some promotional posters to help with the potential poster I will make.
Evaluation (approx. 50 words)
How do you plan to evaluate the work? Reference conducting on-going evaluation and your final
self-reflection, analysing your work and its outcomes.
My research will be done through weekly reflections which will explain the process of my FMP and
what I enjoyed and what didn’t go as I intended. On top of my weekly reflection I will also do an
evaluation at the end just after finishing my production. This will include my final personal
evaluation as well as peer evaluation.
