Univariance Lab Report
The principle of univariance
The principle of univariance states that an unlimited set of diverse wavelength–intensity mixtures can produce the same response from a single kind of
photoreceptor. Having the photoreceptor to respond with the same rate creates a problem, as the human eye favors to perceive wavelength and
amplitude. These are two aspects of light that allow us to perceive color and brightness. Furthermore, a single sort of cone is able to provide a
neural firing rate, which varies in one dimension or is univariate. However, for an accurate and complete vision, humans need to code for two
dimensions. For instance, having one type of cone would prevent a person from perceiving color vision. In this experiment, the firing rate a cone
has to different lights is explored. In order to make the cone to fire to a high extent, the wavelength has to be in 550, and with 90% amplitude.
However, this firing rate changes when the color is changed to a darker color, like with dark blue. In this case the amplitude is in 50% and the
wavelength in 450. This shows this cone is univariant, but can fire with less intensity with darker colors.

This activity allows the participant to observe the responses for the L, M, and S cones. This activity shows that the cones have different response rates
to different lights. For instance, the S cones, which are short wavelength cones, have a high firing rate with 90% amplitude of blue light. However, the
L cones, which are long wavelength cones, have a strong firing rate with 90% amplitude of red light. This is consistent with the length of the light
wavelengths. For instance, the M cones, which has medium wavelength respectively responds to medium wavelength light, which is green

Research of Color Theory Essay
Research of Color Theory
Color fills our world with beauty. We delight in the colors of a magnificent sunset and in the bright red and golden–yellow leaves of autumn. We are
charmed by gorgeous flowering plants and the brilliantly colored arch of a rainbow. We also use color in various ways to add pleasure and interest to
our lives. For example, many people choose the colors of their clothes carefully and decorate their homes with colors that create beautiful, restful, or
exciting effects. By their selection and arrangement of colors, artists try to make their paintings more realistic or expressive.
Color serves as a means of communication. In sports, different colored uniforms show which team the players are on. On streets and ... Show more

Light is a form of energy that behaves in some ways like waves. Light waves have a range of wavelengths. A wavelength is the distance between any
point on one wave and the corresponding point on the next wave. Different wavelengths of light appear to us as different colors. Light that contains all
wavelengths in the same proportions as sunlight appears white. See LIGHT.
When a beam of sunlight passes through a specially shaped glass object called a prism, the rays of different wavelengths are bent at different angles.
The bending breaks up the sunlight into a beautiful band of colors. This band contains all the colors of the rainbow and is called the visible spectrum.
At one end of the spectrum, the light appears as violet. It consists of the shortest wavelengths of light that we can see. Farther along the spectrum, the
light has increasingly longer wavelengths. It appears as blue, green, yellow, orange, and red, each shading into its neighboring colors in the spectrum.
The longest wavelengths of light that we can see appear deep red in color. Some descriptions of the spectrum also mention the color indigo, which is
closely related to blue, between violet and blue.
Light waves are a form of electromagnetic waves, which consist of patterns of electric and magnetic energy. The visible spectrum is only a small part
of the electromagnetic spectrum–the

Light Color Lab
Light, Color, and Solutions Lab In this experiment, the relationships between wavelength, absorbance, concentration, and cell path are explored
through separate, smaller experiments. These relationships can be combined to derive a single equation known as Beer's Law. This equation is then
used to identify an unknown solution's formula weight. A traditional artist'scolor wheel, using pigments, consists of the colors of the rainbow. A color
wheel using light, which is known as a chemist's color wheel, also consists of the rainbow colors. The main difference between these two color
wheels can be seen when colors are mixed together. In the case of mixing light, when all of the colors are added together, the result is white.1
When mixing pigments, however, the result of all colors combined is black.1 Mixing colors of light together results in a lighter color; for example,
mixing red and green results in yellow, a lighter color.2 The combination of several paint colors results in a darker color due to less colors of light
being reflected.2 Essentially, the mixing of the colors of light uses the additive color system while mixing pigment colors using the ... Show more

Beer's Law cannot be used in all cases, however. Some of the limitations include that there are deviations when solutions of greater than 0.01 M are

Beer's Law will be used to determine the molar absorptivity

Art And Its Effect On Society
There are about a million different colors in the world. There are light colors and dark colors and colors in–between. We can use colors to express
ourselves and use them to express our moods. People are famous because of art and people have been arrested for art too. People can dedicate art to
other people and people can draw themselves too. Million and millions of colors are in the world but only few are known. More colors are discovered
ever day by people who experiment with colors. Making different shades of every color. For example, if you mix blue and yellow you get green. If you
mix different colors you will get new better colors. Colors are everywhere even if we don't want them to be.
Colors have lots of meanings. We use many of the same colors but we mix them with other colors and we get the different shades of these colors.
For example, while red is the color most associated with love, it also the color most frequently associated with hatred, anger, aggression, and war.
People who are angry are said to "see red." Red is the color most commonly associated with passion and heat. Blue is the color between violet and
green on the optical spectrum of visible light. Human eyes perceive blue when observing light with a wavelength between 450 and 495 nanometers,
which is between 45 and 49.5 Angstroms. Green is the color between blue and yellow on the spectrum of visible light. It is evoked by light with a
predominant wavelength of roughly 495–570 nm. Pink is a pale Red

Web Page For The Orleans Casino Map
On the web page for the Orleans Casino there is no map. It does not matter how hard you look or how many links you click on, you will not find
any kind of map. To find a map of the casino you must google search "Orleans Casino map". The third link down on the google page will take you
to a third party website called lasvegasmaps.com. This site has a verity of maps for a verity of different Las Vegas casinos. The map on
lasvagasmaps, com for The Orleans casino extremely ugly. There are two colours red and green. Red for non smoking areas and green for smoking

The second thing after the colour scheme to mind when I look at this map is that I have no idea where in las vegas the casino is. Some context
with the rest of the city would be a blessing. A street name next to the entrances or perhaps a smaller subset map of the main strip of Vegas
pinpointing where the Orleans is located. Circling the out line of the building are 5 indents with arrows pointing in and text that says entrance. At
one of them it says valley entrance I assume this is the main entrance but I am unsure. The map feels incomplete, the title is "Main Floor". Where
are the other floors? There are symbols on the map that vaguely represent staircases, and next to these symbols it says in tiny writing where the
escalator goes. "Escalators to movie Theatres". It would be useful to have a second map of the floor plan of this level that has the movie theatre.
The same goes for any other escalator in the building. There is one that goes to a bowling centre and other that goes to meeting rooms. The floor
plan of these areas however is not shown. In one location there is a big arrow that says "To Arena" Once again It would be nice to have another map of
the arena facilities , which if this arena is like any other arena I have ever been to there will be lots of shops and food conception stands that would be
useful to see a map of. An arena seating plan would also be great to be able to find you

Discovery Of The Concentration Of Phosphate
The goal of the lab was to discover the concentration of phosphate in various colas in order to help with a project for a major cola company. Before we
could accomplish this final goal, a Spec 20 was used to test three colors of food colorings. A Spec 20 is an instrument used to "measure the intensity of a
light beam before and after it passes through a sample and compares these two intensities" (What does a Spectronic 20 measure). The instrument is able
to measure the percent transmittance and absorbance of a given sample. It works by taking light of various wavelengths and passing them through a
monochromator. A monochromator is a device that transmits awavelength of light. The machine diffracts the wavelengths. The sample that is placed
in a small container, called a cuvette, absorbs various wavelengths. This depends on the particular sampled being tested. The amount of light
absorbed is projected by the machine on a screen, in our case, a digital screen (How Does a Spectronic 20 work?). By doing the lab with the food
colorings, we were able to properly learn how to use the Spec 20 and also learn the relationship between absorbance and transmittance. Percent
transmittance is the amount of light entering the sample in the cuvette divided by the amount of light leaving the sample, multiplied by 100. This
percent can then be converted to absorbance, which is a measure of the capacity of a substance to absorb light of a specified wavelength
(Absorbance). It is converted by

Framing The West By Rachel Stiff Essay
In the Winchester Cultural Center Gallery, Rachel Stiff 's artwork is displayed in an exhibit called: "Framing the West". As you walk through the
door, you would see Rachel 's drawings arranged in a row beginning from the wall nearest to the window, that expands to the center of the room,
and then ends with paintings closest to the door. You would also see the drawings presented in either a brown or white wooden frame. Whereas, the
paintings were presented in a gold frame or no frame at all. There are fourteen pieces of Rachel 's work being exposed to the public 's naked eye. She
presents her inspired paintings as well as drawings of the Las Vegas desert landscapes through abstract by using interlacing clouds, the sun 's rays,
rocks, and landforms. Although there were fourteen of her pieces to evaluate, I selected three pieces by Rachel Stiff that captured my attention the
most. Examining each artwork, Goner Г— 2, Gravel Pit No.3, and Gravel Pit No.5 captured my attention the most in result of the various elements used.
To begin, Goner Г— 2 is a frameless painting on white canvas that regards the multiple layers within Las Vegas. The primary colors red, blue, and
yellow are involved in the work of art. Secondary colors share an involvement as well. With that being said, subtractive colors are visible to one 's
eye. As you continue to examine the work, you 'll begin to notice the colors red, blue, yellow, brown, green, and black start to fade as it is being applied

Understanding Color
Since the age of Aristotle, great minds have questioned the various natures of reality: how a concept works and how humans perceive it. The
fundamentals of colour were one such mystery. As an unstable property, the secrets of colour have eluded philosophers, artists, and scientists for
centuries, until 1666 when Sir Isaac Newton discovered the properties of light. Thanks to visionaries such as Newton, Hermann von Helmholtz, and
Georges Seurat modern understanding of colour can be explained in a variety of manners and can now be categorized according to medium. Seperated
into 'light' and 'pigment', colours are viewed as individual entities as their application and combinations create alternate visual features that... Show

Though not the socially best example, television is one of the practical applications of pigment primaries in modern society. Colour application in art
can best be analyzed in the context of Impressionist Art. Specifically, looking at Neo–Impressionist artist Georges Seurat (1859–1891)2 shows the
practical applications that colour theory has in a purely artistic context. Chromoluminarism, also known as Pointillism, is a form of painting that is
completely composed of 'dots' strategically placed in close fashion to create an image. Influenced by Ogden Rood's book titled 'Modern Chromatics'
(1879), Seurat created the foremost example of chromoluminarism in current art history: 'A Sunny Afternoon at the Grande Jatter' 1886. Apart from
the work's incredible complexity, it demonstrates another concept in the ways humans view colour. Colour is understood as unstable, because of the
way it reacts to both quantities of light as well as other colours. Primary and Secondary colours are the foundations of what is known as
'Complementary colours' which, on a colour wheel, are opposite one another. Placing complementaries next to, or on top of one another, will visually
alter their properties for the viewer, despite the fact that neither colour has changed at all. However, this is not limited to complementary colours;
primary, secondary, and tertiary colours can all change properties when coupled with another colour. Seurat utilizes this concept in his work

Analysis Of The Film ' The Great Gatsby '
The role color plays
I also appreciated the way colors are used in each film. The color symbolism is sometimes used similarly and sometimes used differently.
In Memento, the film uses flashbacks of either color or black & white scenes to illustrate the difference between current actions, and the previous
events that build up or lead to those events or actions. These choices in color also reveal the chronological order of the film, and in that way two
versions of the story are conveyed. The black & white part of the film runs chronologically forward, while the color parts of the film run in reverse
order. And both of these color choices, and the time lines they create, at the end of the film, meet in the middle! That's something unique.
In Eternal Sunshine Joel is a character who wears dull, unexciting colors; so he blends in with large crowds. He does not stand out at all. In contrast,
Clementine 's quirkiness is expressed by her colorful clothing choices, and her changes in hair color. Clementine always stands out.
Clementine 's hair color is also a symbolic display of her relationship with Joel, changing from green to orange, to red, and then to blue. The color green
symbolizes new life; Spring, fresh air, green plants, growth and nature. This represents a fresh start, the beginning of their relationship.
The color red symbolizes their romantic passion. The color orange represents a weak, dying passion, a dying of love. The color blue represents a mood
of sadness

It is suggested through the use of curved lines and light. 4. Space– Perspective is demonstrated in many ways. This artwork takes up almost the whole
canvas. The horses on the edge look like they were maybe even squeezed in. All of the characters in this artwork look to be congregated to the
middle of the painting, besides the villages in the distance. Linear perspective is used in the placement of the villages in the background and in all
the men and horses, which are grouped in the middle of the screen. Looking at the features in the painting I notice the use of overlapping and vertical
placement, which both imply depth. The horses overlap each other as well as the gentlemen and other elements of the painting. The brown horse's
head overlaps the black one hiding its mouth. The villages and hills in the background appear to be very far away (diminishing size); they look smaller
and distant from the rest of the main aspects of the painting. 5. Time and Motion– The element of time is somewhat apparent in which the painting
depicts events that happened during the daytime because of the lighting and brightness used in the painting. The red and black colors incorporated in
the smoke and fire from the villages implement a sense of time, because although there is smoke and fire the buildings are still in solid form, not
destroyed, symbolizing that the fire may not have been burning for very long. When dealing with the element of motion I automatically begin to think

The Color Black
Sherman Alexie's short fictional story, "Do You Know Where I Am," begins with a Native American narrator named David, and he tracks his
relationship with his wife, Sharon, until her untimely death at the end. All was peachy with this couple until they happened to stumble upon a black cat
that an elderly couple had lost some time ago. Sharon prodded David to rescue the cat, and when he did, she proceeded to dig through the dumpster to
find the newspaper which housed this specific lost cat ad. Upon returning the cat to the couple, David immediately took credit for everything Sharon
had just done which included: finding the cat, deciding to rescue it, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This hesitation by David is most likely the cause of the black hue of the cat. Alexie adds this reluctance to the plot to highlight the point that the lost
black cat has some kind of impending danger connected to it. David somehow can feel this danger, and therefore attempts to avoid it. The black color of
the lost cat is used by Alexie to show and highlight the cat's ominous being, and is therefore a main depiction of the couple's hardships. The cat's
black color is also used by Alexie to symbolize the single "black spot" on David's record as seen by Sharon. Up until the couple stumbled upon this
wicked cat, David character was untarnished. He and Sharon were the picture–perfect couple, and believed one another to be their true soul mate. Once
interacting with this menacing black cat however, David's record obtained a blemish. The cat brought out David's desire to be seen as a hero in
Sharon's eyes, even though she already viewed him as such. David desired to solidify his superior status with Sharon, and instead did the opposite.
After taking some time off, the couple eventually got back together and got married, but David was never seen the same way in Sharon's eyes. The
black color of the cat made David's aura a bit darker, making it less like that of a Sharon's previous view. Unfortunately, when Sharon dies at the end
of the short story, she dies

Invention Of Electronic Music
One of the largest contributors to electronic music today is Thaddeus Cahill (Lejaren Hiller, Electronic Music). His telharmonium was created with
an assembly of rotary generators and telephone receivers to convert electronic signals to into sound (Lejaren Hiller). He developed his invention from
1895 and continued to work on it even though there were no ways for the sounds being created from the electrical signals to be heard. Speakers or
amplifiers were non–existent for some time even after the development of Cahill's invention, and "his instrument was the ancestor of present–day
electronic music synthesizers" (Lejaren Hiller, Electronic Music). Furthermore, Cahill's invention spurred the development of other electric instruments
such as the electronic organ. In the 1920s, more electronic instruments were invented, some of which being monophonic meaning that only one note
could be played at a time (Lejaren Hiller, Electronic Music). One of the more common monophonic electric instruments was the theremin invented by
Russian scientist Leon Theremin (Britannica, Theremin Musical Instrument). The theremin produces sine waves and is a" box with radio tubes
producing oscillation at two sound wave frequencies above the range of hearing; together they produce a lower audible frequency equal to the
difference in their rates of vibration (Britannica, Theremin Musical Instrument)". By moving one's hand or a wand in front of the antennas, one could

The Act of Sex: Is It Worth the Consequences? in William...

represent positively–themed symbolism depending on their colour. For example, the universal symbol for a red rose is love. In relation, the two
colours used in each of the pictures are deep red/crimson and white, which are not typical rose colour choices. The deep red rose is used in the
original illustration of the poem and it symbolizes unconscious beauty. William Blake may uses this colour because the woman that is trying to escape

You cannot see a sickness because most are airborne or caught on contact, thus making it invisible. The worm is said to be flying through the night,
which references sexual activities because sex commonly happens during the night. Generally, worms are innocent creatures because they cause no
harm to humans. All they do is live in the soil to find nutrients and food. The only time you would ever see an earthworm, without digging, is during
a rainstorm when they surface themselves to the ground. They try to maintain their health and not die by being drowned by rain water. Even though
they are visible, they are still not harmful in anyway. It is interesting that Blake uses such an innocent creature to describe something so destructive
like a sexually transmitted infection. He wants to compare two innocent things, the woman and the worm, and show how by engaging in one act,
can destroy ones life. There are worms present in both illustrations provided for the poem. It is very unusual that he illustrates the worms crawling
on a stem because worms do not crawl on the top of plants. In the first illustration, the worm is shaded black. It is perceived as crawling or moving
along the stem of a leaf, by the drawn curve in its body. The colour black symbolizes death, which is directed towards the woman's innocence. Once the
worm catches the woman, her innocence is dead. In the second image, there are

Lightbox:
At the beginning of my observation, the lightbox was a center that always had a child in it. The children do spend a significant amount of time
(about 10 minutes or more) in this center, building things that are color see through. However, whoever was in this center spends a large amount of
time in it, since it's a small space as well it 's limited to two children at a time. It gets less attention than the other centers in the room. Later on in the
end, of my observation period, it got less attention. I believe it was a result of newer things that were introduced in the classroom that took the
attention away from this center. Another issue, it's located in an area that 's almost hidden away in the back of the room in a corner. The children
would have to get through the other centers or areas on the way to the Lightbox. It could be possible the children's interest changes on the way there

Acoustic Theory and Synthesis
Frequency:
Frequency means the number of cycles per second and depending on the amount of cycles per second determines how high or low pitched the sound
is and the time that it takes to complete one cycle is called the period. Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz). And An average human is able to hear
sounds between 20Hz and 20,000Hz.
As the cycles per second increases, the smaller the wavelengths become, therefore there is a higher frequency which will cause the pitch of the sound to
increase or get higher.
If there is frequency of say 20KHz then it is going to be a much higher pitch than a 20Hz because there is a lot more cycles per second.

Stranded Ship on East Hampton Beach
Thomas Moran is known for his oil paintings of the natural world. He captures nature at the moment in which he sees it; this may, in turn, be serene but
also show the dramatic and violent natures of his momentary surroundings. In the compositions chosen he illustrates, as the title infers, a vessel caught
in the turbulent, tumultuous sea. As he captured this image, he kept in mind the destructive nature of water also the constructive nature of water. Water
has the ability to enable cultures to thrive and to barely survive. Water was the main source transportation of goods, ideas and communication in
prehistoric times. In his composition, Moran displays the solid and life–depending aspect of water as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, the flag stands erect and flapping in the wind. On the right side of the piece, we view the exact magnitude of the storm through the "white
wash" of the violent waves. Additionally, the sky to the right of the ship's crow's nest is lighter and hints of a sun trying to break through the lurking
darkness. Despite the presence of other visual elements, what clearly connects is that the ocean, embellished and predominantly highlighted in the
work, was Moran's principal interest. However, the fact that something so fleeting as surging waves dominates the composition even to the visual
expense and weight of an obviously colossal ship.
The visual expressive elements in Moran's composition are not equal in weight. Occupying nearly seventy–five percent of the page, and defining with

atmospheric distance techniques, Moran is able to effectively illustrate the caliber of the waves on the ship's hull by setting the central mast at an

Semiotics And Interactive Design Of Black And White Essay
Introduction
For my Annotated Research Kit, I have explored Black and White (colours), semiotics and interactive design.
The first keyword I have explored is Black and White. This is an illustration style that I have up until recently, been using in my studio work, and in
my own personal practices as a graphic designer. Black and White also fits in with the culture of today's younger generation, in which their taste of
visual style and graphic design preference fits in with my Black and White design style.
On a similar level, I used Black and White in an animation advertisement for the New Zealand Safe Campaign. My intention of using a Black and
White watercolour style was to make the animation appear simple and appealing. I combined the idea of black and white with a watercolour visual
style to help bring about the sense of a natural and real animation story about the sad life of pig farming today.
The second keyword I have explored is semiotics. Semiotics improves everyday life by simplifying matters and information through the interpretation
of simple icons. Without this, people's everyday life would be much difficult than today as we naturally learn faster and better through visuals and
imagery.
My last keyword is interactive design, which is something that is always around us. From the way we interact with computers to apps from the Apple
store to accessing the ATM and reading an online eBook.
Ultimately, interactive design is about finding a solution to a

Rejecting the Myth of Colorblindness in Education
Colorblindness is a defect in the perception of colors, caused by a deficiency in specialized cells in the retina that are sensitive to different colors.
The term is often used today during political discourse, often by members of some factions of liberalism, when claiming that one's race should be
irrelevant to any decision making process. It is a form of moral posturing; that one should see an individual as simply an individual, but not as part of
any larger group or culture. As if this philosophy will enable us to bridge any gaps between races, this thought attempts to focus on how we are all the
same, rather than how we differ. Teachers and administrators are required to complete coursework pertaining to multiculturaleducation ... Show more

Furthermore, Christina Judith Hein, in Color–Blindness vs. Race Matters claims that a common goal cannot be that every individual is treated the same,
regardless of their race, gender, or age, but rather, these differences require different responses within the social framework with certain norms and
values. Reactions to an individual must be specific to that individual's needs. In the collateral–collectivist cultures (African–American, Hispanic and
Asian), emphasis is placed on the family, above all else. This means that in these cultures, even education is second to the needs of a family. When
teaching children from these cultures, it is important not be ethnocentric, but rather understand the structure of their cultures. As teachers, we cannot be
colorblind; for it is a disservice to those we teach.
Hatred, abuse, social injustice, and general dislike of an individual or group will never be controlled or extinguished through any means of education or
political mandate. These terrible practices are part of the human frailty of life, and can be found among every ethnicity and culture. While it should
never be condoned, it cannot be eradicated. In The Multicultural Cult, Thomas Sowell argues that cultural differences matter and always have. He
claims that the "multicultural cult" is one that believes it can improve the education and economic status of a group simply by immersing them in
another's culture. Trying to equate colorblindness with

The History of Christian Art and Structure
After Christ's death, in the first centuries, the Christians were oppressed and considered enemies of the state. Because of this fact, they kept their

The Abstract Expressionist Movement, By Mark Rothko And...
The abstract expressionist movement, with artists such as Mark Rothko and Bernat Newman were articulating a response to an apocalyptic era in
which selfhood, not to mention art, was dwarfed by the enormity of manifold historical cataclysm including the Great Depression, the Second World
War and the mass tension of the Cold War. Clyfford Still, on the other hand objective was not to express the relationship between the past, the
individual or the organic life force embodied by the art, but his answer was to "internalize the awful forces outside" until despair and revelation
occurred. It is through Clifford Still's development of jagged, vertical forms, which he sets against vast reaches of space, and the tiny bits or threads of
color tracing through great vaults of color in his painting evoke a greater natural force that operates within the inner self.
Spending most of his childhood on farms in western Canada and Washington State is that Still's identity of landscapes and mountains figures is
formed. He was born in 1904 on a farm in a small town in North Dakota. He spent most of his childhood in Spokane, Washington and in a wheat land
in southern Alberta at the borders of Canada. Still experienced the struggle of his father's land because the crops did not prosper and the droughts and
in 1917 had catastrophic effects on the farming in all the Provinces. Still even said that they were of "the dammed of the Earth" which embodied the
energies on his art created in later

Living With Art By Tintoretto, Miracle Of The Renaissance
In chapter 4 of Living with Art it discusses the elements of art which are the following: line, shape, mass, light, value, texture, pattern, color, and space.
In the twentieth century two elements were added to the list and they are time and motion. In the painting by Tintoretto, Miracle of the Slave (1548)
there are several elements of art that are at play. First off, is line. Line is presented a few times throughout the painting including horizontal, vertical, and
diagonal line. Horizontal line represents relaxation and placidity, the figure on the ground in the front is a horizontal line because he is dead. His
body is in repose which is why he is represented as a horizontal line. Vertical lines represent assertiveness, structure, and growth. Jesus coming down
from the middle is vertical and he is defying gravity by entering the painting from the top. Lastly for line, is diagonal lines. Most of the other people
throughout the painting are represented as diagonal lines, which represents action and movement. Looking closely at the painting it seems to have a
freeze frame look as though in the midst of all the action someone took a photograph of the scene. The diagonal lines also direct our eyes throughout
the painting by the way the people are positioned, starting at the left those people are leaning towards the man on the ground. Next to the man is a man
standing with his arms raised diagonally towards the far–right figure, and his head is leaning towards Jesus which

These organizing principles will determine how the elements in a scene will be grouped together..The role of the Gestalt principles in perceptual
organization gives everyone the ability to see objects as continues, simple, similar, and proximity. Continuation allows the humanbrain to look at a coil
of rope as one continuos rope and ropes that overlap each other as two separate strands of rope. If a person did not have the ability of continuation
simple processes would take a lot longer while a person uncoiled the entire ropes to make sure that it was one continuos rope. Pragnanz gives a
person the ability to look at something in a simplier form when there are more complex ways to look at it. Such is the case with the Olympic five
circles, the prananz theory gives the human the ability to see it as five rings flowing together but the brain without the ability may look at it as nine
different objects that did not have any flow or connection to them at all. Similarity is when similar items will appear to be grouped together.
Grouping can occure when there are items that are of similar shape, size, or orientation. Proximity is very important on how the brain can group
similar object together and how by changing the color of some objects will redirect the brain to a different patternization. Such is the case when a
block of dots that are 7 high and 7 wide. If all of the dots are the same color the perception in the brain would group them in a horizontal pattern but

Numerous Accomplishments of Johann Heinrich Lambert
Johann Heinrich Lambert was born 26 August 1728 in Mulhouse, present day Alsace, France.
His father was a tailor named Lukas Lambert, whose father was also a tailor. The family was not well off and at the age of twelve young Johann
Lambert he had to begin working for his father which forced him to leave school. As he continued to work for his father he did not forgo his
studies. He filled his time in which he was not helping his father with reading and learning scientific subjects on his own. He had a desire to learn
and expand his knowledge that drove him to study. Even without a formal education or teachers to lead him he learned on his own beginning at a

In color theory Tobias Mayer was a big influence on Lambert. Tobias Mayer's color triangle was first published in 1775. The physicist Georg
Christoph Lichtenberg published the color triangle in an edition called "Opera Inedita". This was a suggestion of Johann Heinrich Lambert, who had
used the Mayer triangle three years previously. A colortriangle operates with the three basiccolors cinnibar, massicot and azurite and gives all mixtures
in which at least one twelfth of another color is added to a basecolor.
Black and white are treated as the representatives of light and darkness, which in turn either lighten or darken the colors.
In 1758 more than half a century after Newton's Optics had appeared the German mathematician and astronomer Tobias Mayer (17231762) gave a
lecture to the Gottingen
Academy of Science entitled "De affinitive colorum commendation" (historical system), in which he tried to identify the exact number of colors,
which the eye is capable of perceiving. He chose red, yellow and blue as his basic colors, and vermillion, mascot and azurite as their representatives
amongst the pigments. Black and white was considered to be the agents of light and darkness, which either lighten or darken the colors.
Lambert was an expert in science and math. He was not very interested in the arts until he was trying to explain light in space. Lambert attempted to
explain the structure of the universe in his writings. About the time he was writing about his theories,

Color and Mood
Overall, results indicate that the manipulation of the color of questionnaire had no effect on mood. However, there was an effect of time of day on
mood as well as an effect of gender on mood. The results did not support the main hypothesis that different colors would elicit different moods. Thus,
this study found no support for the prediction that brighter colors would elicit positive moods, whereas less bright colors would elicit negative
moods. These results do not support past research findings that brighter colors tend to elicit positive moods, whereas, dark colors elicit negative
moods (Hemphill, 1996; Kaya & Epps, 2004). Moreover, this result was not expected given the previously discussed research by Weller and

They found that men tended to have higher scores than women on the Self–assurance subscale in all ten samples they examined, although this
difference was small. Moreover, there does not appear to be a clear reason that in our study men had higher scores than women on the surprise subscale.
Furthermore, the finding that men rated their moods higher on several subscales was intriguing, since past research that examined the relationship
between colors and emotions suggested that women were emotionally oriented and reported more emotional responses to colors than men (Hemphill,
1996). Furthermore, results did not support the hypothesis that the 1:00 PM class would have more positive moods than the 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM
classes; however, results did suggest that mood was affected by the time of day. Nevertheless, only particular times were affected, for instance the 4:00
PM late afternoon class had higher scores for the negative moods than the 8:00 AM class. Also, the 4:00 PM class had higher scores on the shyness
subscale than the 1:00 PM midday class. The results that the late afternoon class had more negative mood than the midday appear to go against the
current literature given that the research suggests that Negative Affect does not fluctuate throughout the day and is not related to the circadian rhythm
(Murray et al., 2002). In contrast, Positive Affect appears to be related to the circadian rhythm, tends to increase throughout the day until about 9pm,

Georges-Pierre Seurat Essay
During his short life, Georges–Pierre Seurat was an innovator in an age of innovators in the field of art. This french painter was a leader in a
movement called neo–impressionist in the late 19th century. Unlike the broad brushstrokes of the impressionist, Seurat developed a technique called
pointillism or divisionism. In this method, he used small dots or strokes of contrasting color to create the subtle changes contained within the painting.
Seurat was an art scientist in that he spent much of his life, searching for how different colors and linear effects would change the look or texture of a
canvas. He was painstaking in his work, the technique he chose taking much longer to produce a work of art.

Usually when colors are produced by pigments being mixed physically, the subtractive color theory is at work. Here the mixing of pigments of the
primary colours produces less light; so if we mix red, blue and yellow pigments(subtractive primaries), we get a colour close to black. However
when colours are produced by the mixing of light, then the additive color theory is at work. Here the mixing of lights of the three primary colours
produces more light; so if we mix red, blue and green light(additive primaries) we get something close to white light. The brighter effect of pointillist
colours could rise from the fact that subtractive mixing is avoided and something closer to the effect of additive mixing is obtained even through
pigments (Pointillism)
The brushwork used to perform pointillistic color mixing is at the expense of traditional brushwork which could be used to delineate texture. Color
television receivers and computer screens, both CRT and LCD, use tiny dots of primary red, green, and blue to render color, and can thus be regarded
as a kind of pointillism (Pointillism).
Impressionism is a movement in French painting, sometimes called optical realism because of its almost scientific interest in the actual visual
experience and effect of light and movement on appearance of objects (Impressionism). Neoimpressionism was a late–19th century art movement led by

light as a sign to go ahead and attain his dream. Consequently, Gatsby tries to pursue his love and thinks that he has convinced Daisy to leave her

ANALYSIS
THE GRASSHOPPER AND THE BELL CRICKET
BY: YASUNARI KAWABATA
"The grasshopper and the bell cricket" is a short story, written by Yasunari Kawabata, written in a narrative perspective of someone watching children
searching for insects using colored and decorated lanterns. I would like to think that the author is trying to symbolize life, and that it is not only one
path to go. We are all aiming for acceptance and to fit in to the society, but this story tells us that
The author, who put himself as narrator, describes how he walks through the halls of the university and approaches the upper school and its playground,

Even the narrator comments "I felt slightly jealous of the boy, and sheepish". When the boy gives away thegrasshopper to a girl, who was one of many
who wanted it, the girl shouted out "Oh! It's not a grasshopper. It's a bell cricket."
I read an analysis on this short story on a blog, called "Generation", and I agree with his thoughts behind the symbolism of the transformation of the
bell cricket from the boy to the girl, he states that it could be translated into the development of love and how, as rare as it is in the wild, one can
captivate with a simple giving gesture. The narrator goes on to explain the rarity of such a find; "even if you have the wit to look by yourself in a
bush away from the other children, there are not many bell crickets in the world."
I agree on the romantic messages behind this story, but I would also like to think that it describes, as I mentioned in the beginning of the analysis, life
in general with the hunting of acceptation, that it is not only one way to go. It does not matter what color or decorations your lantern is, a multi colored
is just as beautiful.

This process of the lens changing form is called accommodation. I thought it was remarkable that the lens reflects the light upside down and inverted
and that the brain must switch the image the correct way. I am curious as to why the lens reflects it upside down, and the reason behind why it does
that. The next step to vision is very important, and it is called transduction. Transduction is how light energy is turned into electrical signals that can be
interpreted and understood by the brain. Transduction happens primarily in the retina, which is made up of several layers of cells. The first layer that
light goes through is made up of rods and cones. Rods are on the outside of the retina and cones make up the center, called the fovea. Rods can only
see black and white, while cones can only see color. This was really interesting to me because I did not know that different parts of our eyes
interpreted different color light. I thought all light was that same to our eyes, but this is not the case. Since, rods are on the outside of the retina, this
means we can see black and white better with of our periphery vision. When light hits our photoreceptors, which are the rods and cones, it activates the
photopigment called rhodopsin. It then sends the information to the second layer of cells in the retina called the bipolar cells. The bipolar cells then

Personal Experience Is The World Can Not Be Fully...
Personal experience is a gateway to recollection, attitudes, and knowledge. By trying different ice cream flavors an individual can establish a
preferred flavor, by playing in the outdoors an individual can decipher his or her ideal season, and by looking at an array of colors an individual can
determine a favorite hue. Without personal experience, an individual inherently lacks a certain depth of knowledge about the qualitative components of
experience, and can only hold understandings based upon physical components. In Epiphenomenal Qualia, Frank Jackson asserts that physicalism is
false because the world cannot be fully described based solely upon physical descriptions. Jackson proposes a thought experiment known as the
Knowledge Argument that seeks to clarify the distinction between formal knowledge and qualitative experience. Supporters of physicalism would
contend that the qualia is only relevant to ability, and formal understanding is the only significant component to knowledge. However, Jackson's
thought experiment successfully identifies an error in physicalism by demonstrating that ability teaches a type of knowledge that cannot be taught
through purely physical terminology, which therefore affirms that physicalism proposes ideas that are narrow to be entirely valid. Foremost, it is
prudent to emphasize the difficulty in clearly defining physicalism. The general idea is that science can tell us everything about the world. Specifically,
physicalism asserts that

Photosynthesis Is The Conversion Of Light Energy Essay
Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy to chemical energy. There are many different factors that can affect the rate of photosynthesis, those
being light intensity, the temperature of the water, the amount of carbon dioxide in the water, and the color of the light. In this experiment we chose to
alter the color of light that was used in the process involving the aquatic plant Elodea while maintaining the other 3 factors. This experiment was
conducted to see how much of an effect the color of the light played in the amount of carbon dioxide produced in the process of photosynthesis. We
measured the amount of NaOH that was needed to color the water pink and then converted the net difference of drops into the net volume of carbon
dioxide that was produced or consumed. The results showed that there was not a significant difference in the amount of carbon dioxide produced when
using a standard regular colored light bulb compared to a green light bulb.
Introduction
Elodea, an aquatic plant, is very commonly used in classrooms around the world to help teach the process of photosynthesis (Berkeley 2015).
Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy to chemical energy. The process of photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast of the plants. Inside the
chloroplast is chlorophyll, which is what absorbs the light energy from the sunlight. Light intensity, the temperature of the water, the amount of carbon
dioxide in the water, and the color of light used are four factors

Beigely Familiar
You're walking down the sidewalk on your way home. A chilly breeze blows, and you hunch your shoulders, shoving your hands into the pockets of

an urge to go in and you don't know why; maybe because the store looks impossible somehow, with its smudged outline and colors that are slightly
less visible than the colors of the other buildings on the street, or because of the way that none of the passersby even give it a glance. You enter the
store and wander around, looking for nothing in particular. I beckon you over to the counter where I stand operating the register. I hand you a vaguely
hamburger–shaped, blurry lump of beige. You stare at it. It is only acolor; a color with form. It shouldn't exist, yet there it rests in your hands, barely
tangible. I explain that the beige can give you whatever you desire, in the moment you desire it. You listen intently, nodding in wonder. You purchase
the beige and deposit the change in your jacket pocket, where it clinks softly. When you exit the store, you notice a tall man in a long jacket staring
at you. You make eye contact, and something in your mind registers, but you ignore it. His head reads "depressed" but he smiles at you, and you

Color Symbolism, The Invisible Man, By Irving Howe
Color Symbolism In The Invisible Man Lucinda Gainor As described by Irving Howe in his 1952 review of Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man "This
novel is a soaring and exalted record of a Negro 's journey through contemporary America in search of success, companionship, and, finally, himself;".
Invisible Man paints a portrait of self–discovery through a narrator who journeys through the dialects and microaggressions of American
Multiculturalism. Displaying an Alternate Universe where obvious symbolism is presented not only the audience, but the narrator as it guides him in
his travel to finding who he is. Artists for years have been fascinated by the implications of the psychological theory of Automatism, it refers to personal
analysis, not the judging of images in the subconscious , but the accepting of them as they come into the conscious mind so they can be analyzed. It
has always been understood that the unconscious has important messages for the conscious mind, but the former always communicates through
images, such as symbols and archetypes, while the latter communicates through language. Symbolism by definition is the practice or art of using a
word or an object to convey an abstract idea, and many surrealist artists want their work to be a link between the abstract realities and the physical
formations of the material world. This perfectly explains Ellison's usage of linguistic technique and visual description between creating semblance of

History
The Mediterranean world in the Middle Ages was covered in vast woodlands that composed a mixture of hard and softwood trees. The forests of
Italy were abundant and diverse. Wood was a main source of fuel for most of Europe for generating heat during the harsh winters. This heat was
also important for cooking, firing bricks, ceramics and glass. It was also used in casting and forging a number of different metals. The building and
mining industries relied mainly on the local forests for beams for bridges, cranes, rafters, ceilings, and doors. A large amount of tree species could not
be used for lumber or heat. These species were used in luxury woodworking. Some examples were sculpture, furniture, and intarsia decorations.
The word intarsia comes from the Italian word tarsia and intarsiare which means to inlay. It is defined as "a mosaic usually of small pieces of wood
which are inserted and glued into hollows of a wooden support that was popular in the 15th century Italy for decoration featuring especially scrolls,
arabesques, architectural scenes, and flowers (Gibbo)." The palette of different of intarsia artist were gathered from timber merchants or from the

Color Theory Research
On streets and highways, a red

Such objects as traffic lights and neon signs appear colored because the light that they give off contains a limited range of wavelengths. However, most
objects appear colored because their chemical structure absorbs certain wavelengths of light and reflects others. When sunlight strikes a carrot, for
example, molecules in the carrot absorb most of the light of short wavelengths. Most of the light of longer wavelengths is reflected. When these longer
wavelengths of light reach our eyes, the carrot appears orange.
An object that reflects most of the light of all wavelengths in nearly equal amounts appears white. An object that absorbs most of the light of all
wavelengths in nearly equal amounts appears black.
How we see color
The roles of the eyes and brain. Our ability to see color depends on many highly complicated workings of the eyes and brain. When we look at an
object, light coming from the object enters our eyes. Each eye focuses the light, forming an image of the object on the retina. The retina is a thin layer
of tissue covering the back and sides of the inside of the eyeball. It contains millions of light–sensitive cells. These cells absorb most of the light that
falls on the retina and convert the light to electrical signals. These electrical signals then travel through nerves to the brain.
The retina has two main types of

Color psychology is the study of the effect of color on human behavior and perception. We are influenced with all sorts of colors around us. When we
see red color, we get a feeling of avoidance, blue gives us a soothing and warm feeling and yellow makes you feel lively and joyful. Why it is that
sometimes our moods define what kind of colors we like and also the color of the clothes we wear. Black color stands for smart professional etiquette
and gray gives you a very dull appearance. All throughout the years, studies have been conducted to analyze the psychological impact of color on your
thinking, choice, memory, learning and cognitive recognition.
Today, companies are investing huge amounts to hire color consultants who advise them on how to go about and which colors to use for their branding
purposes. Coca cola is associated with red color and Cadbury is associated with purple. Associating with a color proves to be beneficial for the
company as it gives them a different identity. The efficient use of colors can affect the mood of consumers in a positive or negative way. Colors
play a huge role in forming attitude and hence managers understand the importance of colors in marketing. Rods detect light that is necessary for

The Role of Color in the Art of Vincent Van Gogh
What role did colour play in the art of Van Gogh?
When people think of Vincent van Gogh they immediately think 'colour'. This is mostly due to his bright French Paintings, but his first paintings in the
Netherlands are never thought of as colourful. This is untrue, colour was always an important element in Gogh's entire lifetime of works. Even though
the melancholy paintings from Holland and the glowing works from Paris seem completely different they are a result of the same theory and practise.
Vincent Van Goghwas mostly self thought and began his career in art by studding nineteenth century 'how to draw' books and copying prints he
liked. He felt like he had to master drawing techniques first in order to become a great painter. Van Gogh also had the idea that he had to work with
black and white before he could master colour. He focused on form and perspective sketches. When he grew strong enough at drawing he began to
start using colour. He became very adventurous and his fearless colour palette developed into one of the most significant features of his later works.
Van Gogh produced over 150 watercolour paintings in his short life. These didn't feature his use of texture but, they are undoubtedly his due to the
recognizable use of vibrant colour. Originally he used watercolour to add shadows to his drawings but the more he worked with them the greater he got
and they became finished masterpieces.
After just five years of studying art Gogh felt ambitious and wanted to

Univariance Lab Report

  • 1. Univariance Lab Report The principle of univariance The principle of univariance states that an unlimited set of diverse wavelength–intensity mixtures can produce the same response from a single kind of photoreceptor. Having the photoreceptor to respond with the same rate creates a problem, as the human eye favors to perceive wavelength and amplitude. These are two aspects of light that allow us to perceive color and brightness. Furthermore, a single sort of cone is able to provide a neural firing rate, which varies in one dimension or is univariate. However, for an accurate and complete vision, humans need to code for two dimensions. For instance, having one type of cone would prevent a person from perceiving color vision. In this experiment, the firing rate a cone has to different lights is explored. In order to make the cone to fire to a high extent, the wavelength has to be in 550, and with 90% amplitude. However, this firing rate changes when the color is changed to a darker color, like with dark blue. In this case the amplitude is in 50% and the wavelength in 450. This shows this cone is univariant, but can fire with less intensity with darker colors. Trichromacy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This activity allows the participant to observe the responses for the L, M, and S cones. This activity shows that the cones have different response rates to different lights. For instance, the S cones, which are short wavelength cones, have a high firing rate with 90% amplitude of blue light. However, the L cones, which are long wavelength cones, have a strong firing rate with 90% amplitude of red light. This is consistent with the length of the light wavelengths. For instance, the M cones, which has medium wavelength respectively responds to medium wavelength light, which is green ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Research of Color Theory Essay Research of Color Theory Color fills our world with beauty. We delight in the colors of a magnificent sunset and in the bright red and golden–yellow leaves of autumn. We are charmed by gorgeous flowering plants and the brilliantly colored arch of a rainbow. We also use color in various ways to add pleasure and interest to our lives. For example, many people choose the colors of their clothes carefully and decorate their homes with colors that create beautiful, restful, or exciting effects. By their selection and arrangement of colors, artists try to make their paintings more realistic or expressive. Color serves as a means of communication. In sports, different colored uniforms show which team the players are on. On streets and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Light is a form of energy that behaves in some ways like waves. Light waves have a range of wavelengths. A wavelength is the distance between any point on one wave and the corresponding point on the next wave. Different wavelengths of light appear to us as different colors. Light that contains all wavelengths in the same proportions as sunlight appears white. Farther along the spectrum, the light has increasingly longer wavelengths. It appears as blue, green, yellow, orange, and red, each shading into its neighboring colors in the spectrum. The longest wavelengths of light that we can see appear deep red in color. Some descriptions of the spectrum also mention the color indigo, which is closely related to blue, between violet and blue. Light waves are a form of electromagnetic waves, which consist of patterns of electric and magnetic energy. The visible spectrum is only a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum–the ... • 3. Light Color Lab Light, Color, and Solutions Lab In this experiment, the relationships between wavelength, absorbance, concentration, and cell path are explored through separate, smaller experiments. These relationships can be combined to derive a single equation known as Beer's Law. This equation is then used to identify an unknown solution's formula weight. A traditional artist'scolor wheel, using pigments, consists of the colors of the rainbow. A color wheel using light, which is known as a chemist's color wheel, also consists of the rainbow colors. The main difference between these two color wheels can be seen when colors are mixed together. In the case of mixing light, when all of the colors are added together, the result is white.1 When mixing pigments, however, the result of all colors combined is black.1 Mixing colors of light together results in a lighter color; for example, mixing red and green results in yellow, a lighter color.2 The combination of several paint colors results in a darker color due to less colors of light being reflected.2 Essentially, the mixing of the colors of light uses the additive color system while mixing pigment colors using the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beer's Law cannot be used in all cases, however. Some of the limitations include that there are deviations when solutions of greater than 0.01 M are used.4 Additionally, particulates being present within the solution and stray light will also affect the accuracy of Beer's Law.4 For this experiment, Beer's Law will be used to determine the molar absorptivity ... • 4. Art And Its Effect On Society There are about a million different colors in the world. There are light colors and dark colors and colors in–between. We can use colors to express ourselves and use them to express our moods. People are famous because of art and people have been arrested for art too. People can dedicate art to other people and people can draw themselves too. Million and millions of colors are in the world but only few are known. More colors are discovered ever day by people who experiment with colors. Making different shades of every color. For example, if you mix blue and yellow you get green. If you mix different colors you will get new better colors. Blue is the color between violet and green on the optical spectrum of visible light. Human eyes perceive blue when observing light with a wavelength between 450 and 495 nanometers, which is between 45 and 49.5 Angstroms. Green is the color between blue and yellow on the spectrum of visible light. It is evoked by light with a predominant wavelength of roughly 495–570 nm. Pink is a pale Red ... • 5. Web Page For The Orleans Casino Map On the web page for the Orleans Casino there is no map. It does not matter how hard you look or how many links you click on, you will not find any kind of map. To find a map of the casino you must google search "Orleans Casino map". The third link down on the google page will take you to a third party website called lasvegasmaps.com. This site has a verity of maps for a verity of different Las Vegas casinos. The map on lasvagasmaps, com for The Orleans casino extremely ugly. There are two colours red and green. Red for non smoking areas and green for smoking areas. Are americans aloud to smoke in public places still? If not, this colour schema is completely useless and out dated. Perhaps it would be nice to have different colours for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second thing after the colour scheme to mind when I look at this map is that I have no idea where in las vegas the casino is. Some context with the rest of the city would be a blessing. A street name next to the entrances or perhaps a smaller subset map of the main strip of Vegas pinpointing where the Orleans is located. Circling the out line of the building are 5 indents with arrows pointing in and text that says entrance. At one of them it says valley entrance I assume this is the main entrance but I am unsure. The map feels incomplete, the title is "Main Floor". Where are the other floors? There are symbols on the map that vaguely represent staircases, and next to these symbols it says in tiny writing where the escalator goes. "Escalators to movie Theatres". It would be useful to have a second map of the floor plan of this level that has the movie theatre. The same goes for any other escalator in the building. There is one that goes to a bowling centre and other that goes to meeting rooms. The floor plan of these areas however is not shown. In one location there is a big arrow that says "To Arena" Once again It would be nice to have another map of the arena facilities , which if this arena is like any other arena I have ever been to there will be lots of shops and food conception stands that would be useful to see a map of. • 6. Discovery Of The Concentration Of Phosphate The goal of the lab was to discover the concentration of phosphate in various colas in order to help with a project for a major cola company. Before we could accomplish this final goal, a Spec 20 was used to test three colors of food colorings. A Spec 20 is an instrument used to "measure the intensity of a light beam before and after it passes through a sample and compares these two intensities" (What does a Spectronic 20 measure). The instrument is able to measure the percent transmittance and absorbance of a given sample. It works by taking light of various wavelengths and passing them through a monochromator. A monochromator is a device that transmits awavelength of light. The machine diffracts the wavelengths. The sample that is placed in a small container, called a cuvette, absorbs various wavelengths. This depends on the particular sampled being tested. The amount of light absorbed is projected by the machine on a screen, in our case, a digital screen (How Does a Spectronic 20 work?). By doing the lab with the food colorings, we were able to properly learn how to use the Spec 20 and also learn the relationship between absorbance and transmittance. Percent transmittance is the amount of light entering the sample in the cuvette divided by the amount of light leaving the sample, multiplied by 100. This percent can then be converted to absorbance, which is a measure of the capacity of a substance to absorb light of a specified wavelength (Absorbance). It is converted by ... • 7. Framing The West By Rachel Stiff Essay In the Winchester Cultural Center Gallery, Rachel Stiff 's artwork is displayed in an exhibit called: "Framing the West". As you walk through the door, you would see Rachel 's drawings arranged in a row beginning from the wall nearest to the window, that expands to the center of the room, and then ends with paintings closest to the door. There are fourteen pieces of Rachel 's work being exposed to the public 's naked eye. She presents her inspired paintings as well as drawings of the Las Vegas desert landscapes through abstract by using interlacing clouds, the sun 's rays, rocks, and landforms. Although there were fourteen of her pieces to evaluate, I selected three pieces by Rachel Stiff that captured my attention the most. Examining each artwork, Goner Г— 2, Gravel Pit No.3, and Gravel Pit No.5 captured my attention the most in result of the various elements used. To begin, Goner Г— 2 is a frameless painting on white canvas that regards the multiple layers within Las Vegas. The primary colors red, blue, and yellow are involved in the work of art. Secondary colors share an involvement as well. With that being said, subtractive colors are visible to one 's eye. • 8. Understanding Color Since the age of Aristotle, great minds have questioned the various natures of reality: how a concept works and how humans perceive it. The fundamentals of colour were one such mystery. As an unstable property, the secrets of colour have eluded philosophers, artists, and scientists for centuries, until 1666 when Sir Isaac Newton discovered the properties of light. Thanks to visionaries such as Newton, Hermann von Helmholtz, and Georges Seurat modern understanding of colour can be explained in a variety of manners and can now be categorized according to medium. Seperated into 'light' and 'pigment', colours are viewed as individual entities as their application and combinations create alternate visual features that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though not the socially best example, television is one of the practical applications of pigment primaries in modern society. Colour application in art can best be analyzed in the context of Impressionist Art. Specifically, looking at Neo–Impressionist artist Georges Seurat (1859–1891)2 shows the practical applications that colour theory has in a purely artistic context. Chromoluminarism, also known as Pointillism, is a form of painting that is completely composed of 'dots' strategically placed in close fashion to create an image. Influenced by Ogden Rood's book titled 'Modern Chromatics' (1879), Seurat created the foremost example of chromoluminarism in current art history: 'A Sunny Afternoon at the Grande Jatter' 1886. Apart from the work's incredible complexity, it demonstrates another concept in the ways humans view colour. Colour is understood as unstable, because of the way it reacts to both quantities of light as well as other colours. Primary and Secondary colours are the foundations of what is known as 'Complementary colours' which, on a colour wheel, are opposite one another. Placing complementaries next to, or on top of one another, will visually alter their properties for the viewer, despite the fact that neither colour has changed at all. However, this is not limited to complementary colours; primary, secondary, and tertiary colours can all change properties when coupled with another colour. Seurat utilizes this concept in his work ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Analysis Of The Film ' The Great Gatsby ' The role color plays I also appreciated the way colors are used in each film. The color symbolism is sometimes used similarly and sometimes used differently. In Memento, the film uses flashbacks of either color or black & white scenes to illustrate the difference between current actions, and the previous events that build up or lead to those events or actions. These choices in color also reveal the chronological order of the film, and in that way two versions of the story are conveyed. The black & white part of the film runs chronologically forward, while the color parts of the film run in reverse order. And both of these color choices, and the time lines they create, at the end of the film, meet in the middle! That's something unique. In Eternal Sunshine Joel is a character who wears dull, unexciting colors; so he blends in with large crowds. He does not stand out at all. In contrast, Clementine 's quirkiness is expressed by her colorful clothing choices, and her changes in hair color. Clementine always stands out. Clementine 's hair color is also a symbolic display of her relationship with Joel, changing from green to orange, to red, and then to blue. The color green symbolizes new life; Spring, fresh air, green plants, growth and nature. This represents a fresh start, the beginning of their relationship. The color red symbolizes their romantic passion. The color orange represents a weak, dying passion, a dying of love. The color blue represents a mood of sadness ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was painted in 1931 and is on display in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Looking at this artwork brings a mood of sadness. The horses on the edge look like they were maybe even squeezed in. All of the characters in this artwork look to be congregated to the middle of the painting, besides the villages in the distance. Linear perspective is used in the placement of the villages in the background and in all the men and horses, which are grouped in the middle of the screen. Looking at the features in the painting I notice the use of overlapping and vertical placement, which both imply depth. The horses overlap each other as well as the gentlemen and other elements of the painting. The brown horse's head overlaps the black one hiding its mouth. The villages and hills in the background appear to be very far away (diminishing size); they look smaller and distant from the rest of the main aspects of the painting. 5. Time and Motion– The element of time is somewhat apparent in which the painting depicts events that happened during the daytime because of the lighting and brightness used in the painting. The red and black colors incorporated in the smoke and fire from the villages implement a sense of time, because although there is smoke and fire the buildings are still in solid form, not destroyed, symbolizing that the fire may not have been burning for very long. All was peachy with this couple until they happened to stumble upon a black cat that an elderly couple had lost some time ago. Sharon prodded David to rescue the cat, and when he did, she proceeded to dig through the dumpster to find the newspaper which housed this specific lost cat ad. Alexie adds this reluctance to the plot to highlight the point that the lost black cat has some kind of impending danger connected to it. David somehow can feel this danger, and therefore attempts to avoid it. The black color of the lost cat is used by Alexie to show and highlight the cat's ominous being, and is therefore a main depiction of the couple's hardships. The cat's black color is also used by Alexie to symbolize the single "black spot" on David's record as seen by Sharon. Up until the couple stumbled upon this wicked cat, David character was untarnished. He and Sharon were the picture–perfect couple, and believed one another to be their true soul mate. Once interacting with this menacing black cat however, David's record obtained a blemish. The cat brought out David's desire to be seen as a hero in Sharon's eyes, even though she already viewed him as such. David desired to solidify his superior status with Sharon, and instead did the opposite. After taking some time off, the couple eventually got back together and got married, but David was never seen the same way in Sharon's eyes. The black color of the cat made David's aura a bit darker, making it less like that of a Sharon's previous view. Unfortunately, when Sharon dies at the end of the short story, she dies ... His telharmonium was created with an assembly of rotary generators and telephone receivers to convert electronic signals to into sound (Lejaren Hiller). He developed his invention from 1895 and continued to work on it even though there were no ways for the sounds being created from the electrical signals to be heard. Speakers or amplifiers were non–existent for some time even after the development of Cahill's invention, and "his instrument was the ancestor of present–day electronic music synthesizers" (Lejaren Hiller, Electronic Music). Furthermore, Cahill's invention spurred the development of other electric instruments such as the electronic organ. In the 1920s, more electronic instruments were invented, some of which being monophonic meaning that only one note could be played at a time (Lejaren Hiller, Electronic Music). One of the more common monophonic electric instruments was the theremin invented by Russian scientist Leon Theremin (Britannica, Theremin Musical Instrument). The theremin produces sine waves and is a" box with radio tubes producing oscillation at two sound wave frequencies above the range of hearing; together they produce a lower audible frequency equal to the difference in their rates of vibration (Britannica, Theremin Musical Instrument)". The deep red rose is used in the original illustration of the poem and it symbolizes unconscious beauty. The only time you would ever see an earthworm, without digging, is during a rainstorm when they surface themselves to the ground. They try to maintain their health and not die by being drowned by rain water. Even though they are visible, they are still not harmful in anyway. In the compositions chosen he illustrates, as the title infers, a vessel caught in the turbulent, tumultuous sea. As he captured this image, he kept in mind the destructive nature of water also the constructive nature of water. Water has the ability to enable cultures to thrive and to barely survive. Additionally, the sky to the right of the ship's crow's nest is lighter and hints of a sun trying to break through the lurking darkness. Despite the presence of other visual elements, what clearly connects is that the ocean, embellished and predominantly highlighted in the work, was Moran's principal interest. • 18. Semiotics And Interactive Design Of Black And White Essay Introduction For my Annotated Research Kit, I have explored Black and White (colours), semiotics and interactive design. The first keyword I have explored is Black and White. This is an illustration style that I have up until recently, been using in my studio work, and in my own personal practices as a graphic designer. Black and White also fits in with the culture of today's younger generation, in which their taste of visual style and graphic design preference fits in with my Black and White design style. On a similar level, I used Black and White in an animation advertisement for the New Zealand Safe Campaign. My intention of using a Black and White watercolour style was to make the animation appear simple and appealing. I combined the idea of black and white with a watercolour visual style to help bring about the sense of a natural and real animation story about the sad life of pig farming today. The second keyword I have explored is semiotics. Semiotics improves everyday life by simplifying matters and information through the interpretation of simple icons. Without this, people's everyday life would be much difficult than today as we naturally learn faster and better through visuals and imagery. My last keyword is interactive design, which is something that is always around us. From the way we interact with computers to apps from the Apple store to accessing the ATM and reading an online eBook. Ultimately, interactive design is about finding a solution to a ... Rejecting the Myth of Colorblindness in Education Colorblindness is a defect in the perception of colors, caused by a deficiency in specialized cells in the retina that are sensitive to different colors. The term is often used today during political discourse, often by members of some factions of liberalism, when claiming that one's race should be irrelevant to any decision making process. It is a form of moral posturing; that one should see an individual as simply an individual, but not as part of any larger group or culture. As if this philosophy will enable us to bridge any gaps between races, this thought attempts to focus on how we are all the same, rather than how we differ. Furthermore, Christina Judith Hein, in Color–Blindness vs. Race Matters claims that a common goal cannot be that every individual is treated the same, regardless of their race, gender, or age, but rather, these differences require different responses within the social framework with certain norms and values. Reactions to an individual must be specific to that individual's needs. In the collateral–collectivist cultures (African–American, Hispanic and Asian), emphasis is placed on the family, above all else. This means that in these cultures, even education is second to the needs of a family. When teaching children from these cultures, it is important not be ethnocentric, but rather understand the structure of their cultures. As teachers, we cannot be colorblind; for it is a disservice to those we teach. Hatred, abuse, social injustice, and general dislike of an individual or group will never be controlled or extinguished through any means of education or political mandate. These terrible practices are part of the human frailty of life, and can be found among every ethnicity and culture. While it should never be condoned, it cannot be eradicated. Living With Art By Tintoretto, Miracle Of The Renaissance In chapter 4 of Living with Art it discusses the elements of art which are the following: line, shape, mass, light, value, texture, pattern, color, and space. In the twentieth century two elements were added to the list and they are time and motion. In the painting by Tintoretto, Miracle of the Slave (1548) there are several elements of art that are at play. First off, is line. Line is presented a few times throughout the painting including horizontal, vertical, and diagonal line. Horizontal line represents relaxation and placidity, the figure on the ground in the front is a horizontal line because he is dead. His body is in repose which is why he is represented as a horizontal line. Vertical lines represent assertiveness, structure, and growth. Jesus coming down from the middle is vertical and he is defying gravity by entering the painting from the top. Lastly for line, is diagonal lines. Most of the other people throughout the painting are represented as diagonal lines, which represents action and movement. Looking closely at the painting it seems to have a freeze frame look as though in the midst of all the action someone took a photograph of the scene. The diagonal lines also direct our eyes throughout the painting by the way the people are positioned, starting at the left those people are leaning towards the man on the ground. Similarity is when similar items will appear to be grouped together. Grouping can occure when there are items that are of similar shape, size, or orientation. Proximity is very important on how the brain can group similar object together and how by changing the color of some objects will redirect the brain to a different patternization. Furthermore, the finding that men rated their moods higher on several subscales was intriguing, since past research that examined the relationship between colors and emotions suggested that women were emotionally oriented and reported more emotional responses to colors than men (Hemphill, 1996). Furthermore, results did not support the hypothesis that the 1:00 PM class would have more positive moods than the 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM classes; however, results did suggest that mood was affected by the time of day. Seurat was an art scientist in that he spent much of his life, searching for how different colors and linear effects would change the look or texture of a canvas. He was painstaking in his work, the technique he chose taking much longer to produce a work of art. Pointillism is a form of painting in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Usually when colors are produced by pigments being mixed physically, the subtractive color theory is at work. Here the mixing of pigments of the primary colours produces less light; so if we mix red, blue and yellow pigments(subtractive primaries), we get a colour close to black. However when colours are produced by the mixing of light, then the additive color theory is at work. Here the mixing of lights of the three primary colours produces more light; so if we mix red, blue and green light(additive primaries) we get something close to white light. The brighter effect of pointillist colours could rise from the fact that subtractive mixing is avoided and something closer to the effect of additive mixing is obtained even through pigments (Pointillism) The brushwork used to perform pointillistic color mixing is at the expense of traditional brushwork which could be used to delineate texture. Color television receivers and computer screens, both CRT and LCD, use tiny dots of primary red, green, and blue to render color, and can thus be regarded as a kind of pointillism (Pointillism). Impressionism is a movement in French painting, sometimes called optical realism because of its almost scientific interest in the actual visual experience and effect of light and movement on appearance of objects (Impressionism). • 30. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald Celia Willner 10 December 2015 American Lit 11 Bartlett White Lies Out of the Blue Colors can invoke feelings for people. Certain colors are attached to moods. Red can represent anger, green sometimes represents envy and blue can represent calm or even melancholy. Much art, music, and literature is dependent on color to convey the intended mood of the artist. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby, a man with wealth, power, and possessions is on a quest for the dream that he will never attain. He cannot have all that he already has plus the true love of Daisy. Fitzgerald creates his own unique motifs surrounding certain colors and uses these colors to emphasize the futility in Gatsby's quest for this dream. Through the use... In most societies today, green means go; Gatsby sees the light as a sign to go ahead and attain his dream. Consequently, Gatsby tries to pursue his love and thinks that he has convinced Daisy to leave her husband, but it is all an illusion; "'If it wasn't for the mist we could see you home across the bay...you always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock.'...it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one" (93). In this moment, Gatsby realizes that his dream will never be obtained because the light is not visible anymore. There is a distance between Gatsby and Daisy, and the only connection to his vision of a perfect life is the green light, and, once it disappears, the hope for an ideal life fades. By saying "It had seemed as close as a star to the moon," it is almost as if Gatsby is very close, but in reality he is still far away and the hope has vanished with the green light. After Gatsby dies, Nick reflects on Gatsby's decisions that were based on the green light; "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis the Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket ANALYSIS THE GRASSHOPPER AND THE BELL CRICKET BY: YASUNARI KAWABATA "The grasshopper and the bell cricket" is a short story, written by Yasunari Kawabata, written in a narrative perspective of someone watching children searching for insects using colored and decorated lanterns. I would like to think that the author is trying to symbolize life, and that it is not only one path to go. We are all aiming for acceptance and to fit in to the society, but this story tells us that The author, who put himself as narrator, describes how he walks through the halls of the university and approaches the upper school and its playground, and he seems to get so emotionally attached that he cannot take another turn. When the boy gives away thegrasshopper to a girl, who was one of many who wanted it, the girl shouted out "Oh! It's not a grasshopper. It's a bell cricket." I read an analysis on this short story on a blog, called "Generation", and I agree with his thoughts behind the symbolism of the transformation of the bell cricket from the boy to the girl, he states that it could be translated into the development of love and how, as rare as it is in the wild, one can captivate with a simple giving gesture. The narrator goes on to explain the rarity of such a find; "even if you have the wit to look by yourself in a bush away from the other children, there are not many bell crickets in the world." I agree on the romantic messages behind this story, but I would also like to think that it describes, as I mentioned in the beginning of the analysis, life in general with the hunting of acceptation, that it is not only one way to go. It does not matter what color or decorations your lantern is, a multi colored is just as beautiful. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– [ 1 ]. I thought it was remarkable that the lens reflects the light upside down and inverted and that the brain must switch the image the correct way. I am curious as to why the lens reflects it upside down, and the reason behind why it does that. The next step to vision is very important, and it is called transduction. Transduction is how light energy is turned into electrical signals that can be interpreted and understood by the brain. Transduction happens primarily in the retina, which is made up of several layers of cells. The first layer that light goes through is made up of rods and cones. Rods are on the outside of the retina and cones make up the center, called the fovea. Rods can only see black and white, while cones can only see color. This was really interesting to me because I did not know that different parts of our eyes interpreted different color light. I thought all light was that same to our eyes, but this is not the case. Since, rods are on the outside of the retina, this means we can see black and white better with of our periphery vision. When light hits our photoreceptors, which are the rods and cones, it activates the photopigment called rhodopsin. It then sends the information to the second layer of cells in the retina called the bipolar cells. The bipolar cells then pass on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Personal Experience Is The World Can Not Be Fully... Personal experience is a gateway to recollection, attitudes, and knowledge. By trying different ice cream flavors an individual can establish a preferred flavor, by playing in the outdoors an individual can decipher his or her ideal season, and by looking at an array of colors an individual can determine a favorite hue. Without personal experience, an individual inherently lacks a certain depth of knowledge about the qualitative components of experience, and can only hold understandings based upon physical components. In Epiphenomenal Qualia, Frank Jackson asserts that physicalism is false because the world cannot be fully described based solely upon physical descriptions. Jackson proposes a thought experiment known as the Knowledge Argument that seeks to clarify the distinction between formal knowledge and qualitative experience. Supporters of physicalism would contend that the qualia is only relevant to ability, and formal understanding is the only significant component to knowledge. However, Jackson's thought experiment successfully identifies an error in physicalism by demonstrating that ability teaches a type of knowledge that cannot be taught through purely physical terminology, which therefore affirms that physicalism proposes ideas that are narrow to be entirely valid. Foremost, it is prudent to emphasize the difficulty in clearly defining physicalism. The general idea is that science can tell us everything about the world. Specifically, physicalism asserts that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Photosynthesis Is The Conversion Of Light Energy Essay Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy to chemical energy. There are many different factors that can affect the rate of photosynthesis, those being light intensity, the temperature of the water, the amount of carbon dioxide in the water, and the color of the light. In this experiment we chose to alter the color of light that was used in the process involving the aquatic plant Elodea while maintaining the other 3 factors. This experiment was conducted to see how much of an effect the color of the light played in the amount of carbon dioxide produced in the process of photosynthesis. We measured the amount of NaOH that was needed to color the water pink and then converted the net difference of drops into the net volume of carbon dioxide that was produced or consumed. The results showed that there was not a significant difference in the amount of carbon dioxide produced when using a standard regular colored light bulb compared to a green light bulb. Introduction Elodea, an aquatic plant, is very commonly used in classrooms around the world to help teach the process of photosynthesis (Berkeley 2015). Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy to chemical energy. The process of photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast of the plants. Inside the chloroplast is chlorophyll, which is what absorbs the light energy from the sunlight. • 38. Descriptive Essay Beigely Familiar You're walking down the sidewalk on your way home. A chilly breeze blows, and you hunch your shoulders, shoving your hands into the pockets of your jacket. Feeling a need for spontaneity, you decide to take a different turn. After five minutes of walking you come upon a corner store. You feel an urge to go in and you don't know why; maybe because the store looks impossible somehow, with its smudged outline and colors that are slightly less visible than the colors of the other buildings on the street, or because of the way that none of the passersby even give it a glance. You enter the store and wander around, looking for nothing in particular. I beckon you over to the counter where I stand operating the register. I hand you a vaguely hamburger–shaped, blurry lump of beige. You stare at it. It is only acolor; a color with form. It shouldn't exist, yet there it rests in your hands, barely tangible. I explain that the beige can give you whatever you desire, in the moment you desire it. You listen intently, nodding in wonder. You purchase the beige and deposit the change in your jacket pocket, where it clinks softly. When you exit the store, you notice a tall man in a long jacket staring at you. You make eye contact, and something in your mind registers, but you ignore it. His head reads "depressed" but he smiles at you, and you wonder why. None of the other passersby even give you a glance. Color Symbolism, The Invisible Man, By Irving Howe Color Symbolism In The Invisible Man Lucinda Gainor As described by Irving Howe in his 1952 review of Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man "This novel is a soaring and exalted record of a Negro 's journey through contemporary America in search of success, companionship, and, finally, himself;". Invisible Man paints a portrait of self–discovery through a narrator who journeys through the dialects and microaggressions of American Multiculturalism. Displaying an Alternate Universe where obvious symbolism is presented not only the audience, but the narrator as it guides him in his travel to finding who he is. Artists for years have been fascinated by the implications of the psychological theory of Automatism, it refers to personal analysis, not the judging of images in the subconscious , but the accepting of them as they come into the conscious mind so they can be analyzed. It has always been understood that the unconscious has important messages for the conscious mind, but the former always communicates through images, such as symbols and archetypes, while the latter communicates through language. Symbolism by definition is the practice or art of using a word or an object to convey an abstract idea, and many surrealist artists want their work to be a link between the abstract realities and the physical formations of the material world. This perfectly explains Ellison's usage of linguistic technique and visual description between creating semblance of cultural and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Wood was a main source of fuel for most of Europe for generating heat during the harsh winters. This heat was also important for cooking, firing bricks, ceramics and glass. It was also used in casting and forging a number of different metals. The building and mining industries relied mainly on the local forests for beams for bridges, cranes, rafters, ceilings, and doors. A large amount of tree species could not be used for lumber or heat. These species were used in luxury woodworking. Some examples were sculpture, furniture, and intarsia decorations. The word intarsia comes from the Italian word tarsia and intarsiare which means to inlay. It is defined as "a mosaic usually of small pieces of wood which are inserted and glued into hollows of a wooden support that was popular in the 15th century Italy for decoration featuring especially scrolls, arabesques, architectural scenes, and flowers (Gibbo)." We are charmed by gorgeous flowering plants and the brilliantly colored arch of a rainbow. We also use color in various ways to add pleasure and interest to our lives. For example, many people choose the colors of their clothes carefully and decorate their homes with colors that create beautiful, restful, or exciting effects. Such objects as traffic lights and neon signs appear colored because the light that they give off contains a limited range of wavelengths. However, most objects appear colored because their chemical structure absorbs certain wavelengths of light and reflects others. When sunlight strikes a carrot, for example, molecules in the carrot absorb most of the light of short wavelengths. Most of the light of longer wavelengths is reflected. When these longer wavelengths of light reach our eyes, the carrot appears orange. An object that reflects most of the light of all wavelengths in nearly equal amounts appears white. An object that absorbs most of the light of all wavelengths in nearly equal amounts appears black. How we see color The roles of the eyes and brain. Our ability to see color depends on many highly complicated workings of the eyes and brain. When we look at an object, light coming from the object enters our eyes. Each eye focuses the light, forming an image of the object on the retina. The retina is a thin layer of tissue covering the back and sides of the inside of the eyeball. It contains millions of light–sensitive cells. These cells absorb most of the light that falls on the retina and convert the light to electrical signals. These electrical signals then travel through nerves to the brain. The retina has two main types of

This is mostly due to his bright French Paintings, but his first paintings in the Netherlands are never thought of as colourful. This is untrue, colour was always an important element in Gogh's entire lifetime of works. Even though the melancholy paintings from Holland and the glowing works from Paris seem completely different they are a result of the same theory and practise. Vincent Van Goghwas mostly self thought and began his career in art by studding nineteenth century 'how to draw' books and copying prints he liked. He felt like he had to master drawing techniques first in order to become a great painter. Van Gogh also had the idea that he had to work with black and white before he could master colour. He focused on form and perspective sketches. When he grew strong enough at drawing he began to start using colour. He became very adventurous and his fearless colour palette developed into one of the most significant features of his later works. Van Gogh produced over 150 watercolour paintings in his short life. These didn't feature his use of texture but, they are undoubtedly his due to the recognizable use of vibrant colour.
