Strategic Management Case Analysis
Introduction
"It has been, and continues to be, our responsibility to fill the earth with the light and warmth of hospitality."1
This is the stated philosophy of the luxury hotel company that Conrad Hilton, the founder of Hilton Hotels, used to extend his desire for his company
to offer customers a kind, hospitable, and luxury setting. Conrad started the hotel chain by purchasing a single 40– room hotel from Cisco, Texas in
1919. Since then the corporation has grown into more than 2,800 hotels and 490,000 rooms in more than 80 countries as of 2006.

There are bills in both houses of Congress that would help alleviate some of the problems the lodging industry is having with hiring seasonal workers.
The bills would affect the US government's H2–B visa program, which allows Hoteliers to hire short–term workers. The bills before Congress would
increase the number of visas available each year and some of the eligibility requirements would be lifted. If these bills are passed, more seasonal
workers would be available for the lodging industry and the money spent recruiting workers could be used elsewhere. http://www.ahla.com/pdf

Hotel Room And Occupancy Rates
Our industry, the Global Hotels and Resorts, experienced strong growth over the five years to 2015. Over the five–year period, both consumers and
businesses became more confident about their finances and spent freely on luxuries, including travel. This culminated in a substantial increase in travel
rates and hotel room and occupancy rates, two indicators of a hotel 's performance. Travel spending has also picked up quickly, especially in
emerging economies where tourism is on the rise. Global tourist arrivals are expected to increase an annualized 4.8% over the five years to 2015 to
reach 1.2 billion. As a result of these positive trends, industry revenue is expected to increase an annualized 4.6% over the five years to 2015 to reach ...

Over the five years to 2020, revenue is projected to increase at an annualized rate of 3.4% to $978.7 billion. In 2016 there will be some new trends
emerging as hotels will have to compete with growing popularity of companies such as Airbnb. Millennials have shifted the focus from hotel loyalty
to more novelty related experiences. The overarching experience that many of these hotels in the industry are shifting to is updated bars and lounges
that spill into the lobby. Renovation will be on the upswing over the next few years as guests desire more technology, more stimulating social
experiences, and better food and snack choices. Hotels will be looking to charge more fees and surcharges on amenities as occupancy rates increase.
This goes without saying, demand drives prices, and the hotel industry will be in the driver's seat in the coming years.
Key external drivers which drive our industry are: 1) global tourist arrivals (Trends in international and domestic visitor flights and their length of stay
influence demand for accommodations. A rise in international and domestic trips positively affects demand for hotels and resorts. The number of
global tourist arrivals is expected to increase in 2015), 2) global consumer sentiment index (Trends in international and domestic visitor flights and their

Hilton is threat of new entrants due to its established brand name
§ Hotel industry has high degree of rivalry due to the large number of competitors using similar strategies. Hilton has a large number of
competitors such as Marriott,
Wyndham Worldwide and Intercontinental
§ Diversification: Hotels increase their diversification to differentiate themselves from other players. Recently Hilton diversified their operations
into a lifestyle brand to attract active travellers who has high interest in gaining experience while staying healthy and productive (Euromonitor, 2014)

Benefits Of A Shift From A Service Based Economy
Introduction
There is no doubt that nowadays we can observe a shift from a service–based economy to an experience–based economy as owners of businesses tend
to commoditize services and thereby offer their customers not a simple service for the money but an unforgettable, special and highly valued
experience. The service–profit chain which links the employees', customers' and owners' satisfaction stands behind this experience. These days it is
believed that customers want to receive an authentic and remarkable experience for their money, rather than a service which can be offered in every
place, they want to feel unique, that is why there is a growing interest in this topic.
According to B. Joseph Pine II and James H. Gilmore, "an experience occurs when a company intentionally uses services as the stage and goods as
props, to engage individual customers in a way that creates a memorable event" (Pine II, Gilmore, 1998). Therefore, companies are trying to create a
specific experience which will help them to distinguish themselves from other companies providing the same service. In order to do that it is very
important to understand the links in the service–profit chain.
In every business and in a hotel industry especially it is crucial for every manager to understand how to maintain employees' and customers' satisfaction
while continuing earning profit for the owner. First of all, every manager should comprehend the links in the service–profit chain, for example, customer

The Importance Of Internship Experience At The Hilton Hotel

served as the banquet server, is my first internship experience; also, it is the first job in my life, the heart is full of excitement and energy. I was an
introverted and poor person for communicating with others; therefore, this internship is a challenge for me to overcome.
To the day of the internship, I follow the supervisor came to the Hilton Hotel Human Resources Department for an induction training. According to my

What Makes A Name Hilton
Precisely what is it that makes a name so famous that people from all over the world flock to the most fad destinations spots just to stay in a hotel?
When you hear of the name Hilton immediately the images of relaxation, luxury and quality spring into your mind. Yet, what is it that put the
name Hilton in such high demand when booking a place to stay? Conrad Hilton the famous impresario built his timeless legacy from the ground
up. From humble beginnings as a general store owners son to the founder of over 500 hotels and resorts spread over 78 different countries, Conrad
Hilton redefined the meaning of lodging and hospitality and constructed the expectations of what is known today as a stay at the Hilton. Conrad
Hilton was born on December 25, 1887 in the desolate city of San Antonio New Mexico. Hilton was the eldest son and worked for his father in a
general store. His father wanted him to follow in his proud footsteps and run the general store, young Hilton had other plans. He soon opened his own
bank. That short lived business venture ended just in time for what was to happen to Hilton next. He soon became involved in politics and yet again
restless Hilton did not stay very long in that profession. He then went into war. During World War II Hilton served his time working with the supplies
for the infantry. Due to his knowledge of the general store Hilton's position was second nature to him. After the war Hilton went onto yet another
business venture.

Ideology In The Selfish Giant, And The Bling Ring
In both the films we watched in class a large range of ideological perspectives were presented, and those perspectives were largely based upon their
director's views and opinions of the world. The two films were The Selfish Giant directed by Clio Bernard, and The Bling Ring directed by Sophia
Coppola. Ideology is a very important concept in both films, and it can be defined as a systematic body of ideas, attitudes, values and perspectives that
help shape a particular culture or group within that culture. Each director uses formal elements, and character values to show specific ideologies. In
The Bling Ring Sophia Coppla focuses on showing the life style that a group of corrupt teens so desperately wants to live, and why the culture
surrounding them is the reason for their corrupt values. While the film The Selfish Giant highlights issues of working class people, and a culture that
has put children in a position where stealing to support ones family feels like doing the right thing. Select characters in each film have a fascination
with material things, and although they have very different reasons for them the side effects they experience because of these fascinations are very
similar. In The Bling Ring the characters have a strong desire to acquire the most popular, and extravagant fashion items; the motivation behind this
desire is that they have learned base their self worth off the things they own and nothing else. One of the main characters in the film Nick talks about

The most important thing about the B.E.O.s is the time. Because there are so many events that happen one after another, one event usually requires all
hands on deck. To me, teamwork and communication is the most important thing in the banquet department because everybody has a role in making
sure that the event is flawless all while exceeding the guests' needs in any situation. The Food & Beverage jobs vary from location to location but can
range anywhere from an entry level to an executive level. Depending on the position in Banquets, Catering, or Convention Services, Hilton offers
top–notch job training, leadership skills, and support. The Hilton's values as a company are in its name itself. They are hospitality, for giving the
guests an extraordinary experience, integrity by doing the right thing, all the time, leadership to be leaders in the hospitality industry, teamwork by
working together as one big team, ownership by owning up to our decisions and actions we make, and now by operating with discipline and urgency.

His key traits were determined, visionary, risk taker, tenacious, dedicated, high energy, caring, conscientious, motivated, persistent, and ambitious.
Conrad Hilton recognized the importance of individuals in the realization of success. He took a personal interest in all of his followers by paying
attention to their concerns and mentoring them (Alef 2009). He encouraged two–way communications between him and his followers to allow the
people to express their views. He tolerated differences among the employees and delegated most of the work to others. This leadership style is
important as it takes into consideration individual views of every person and makes the employees feel valued (Eeden et al. 2008). Globalization has
led to the establishment of multinational companies that draw their employees from different backgrounds. There is need for leaders to understand
their followers and tolerate their differences for the success of the entire team. Hilton also inspired his followers towards the attainment of common
goals through a shared vision. He gave the employees a sense of belonging by motivating them to continuously focus on company goals. His wide
experience in politics, military, and the entrepreneurial skills that he learned at his father`s store was a great inspiration to his subordinates. The Hilton
employees viewed Conrad as a role model due to the high moral standards that he exercised. Hilton

The leading concept from management process is the ability to direct and motivate other lower–line employees toward the progress of achieving
organizational goals. The managerial line of an organization should have themselves occupied with high leadership skills; this will motivate workers
to put more effort on their respective jobs, hence these will increase productivity and earn profits. Hilton has applied Hilton Worldwide Leadership as
their leading strategy for success organizational goals. The founder of Hilton Hotels, Conrad Hilton was a great and visionary leader who referred as

Besides being at the brink of madness caused by her self–denial of the passing of her fame, Norma Desmond had also become rather
sexual–transgressive. Some male traits shown in Norma consist of her dominance – she demands over Max, financial independence – owns factories
which constantly makes profits and her assertive nature – she fearlessly confronts her passion for Joe. The way Norma is ridiculously insane to a
degree of dark humour brings sympathy, entertainment and a corrupted depiction of celebrity to audiences.
Starred by William Holden, the male protagonist, given one of the most mundane names, Joe Gillis, is a laconic character who interacts with Norma in
a reciprocally dependent relationship. Without Gillis, Norma feels lifeless, loveless and powerless, she depends on him emotionally, and conversely,
without Norma, Gillis is homeless, finance–less and jobless, he depends on her materialistically. Also, identical to Norma, Gillis is sexually
transgressive as well. He possesses many feminine identities such as his betrayal of integrity – Joe and Norma swaps roles. He conforms to the reality
where his scripts are rejected and adopt the easier role of being Norma Desmond's gigalo – weakness of character. In Gillis, audiences see a man who
forfeited his personal happiness to gain money–oriented power over others – however, what he really gained is nothing, Norma nor her money can give

'Glamour' is aimed mainly at late teens to late twenties. When flicking through the magazine, I noticed that there was more text and adverts. This
reflects how the age–group has more time and disposable income. Also, 'Glamour' was the most expensive magazine, being ВЈ1.90 and included a
website, (see figure 2,) which again indicates a higher disposable income and extra time. The front cover yet again includes an hourglass shaped
celebrity, but she is older, although she still conforms to the dominant ideology for a young female. The magazine includes the latest fashion and
make–up styles, but on a much larger scale when compared to 'Sneak.' "MASSIVE FASHION SPECIAL: 1322 HOT NEW LOOKS." It again
includes problem pages, but the problems are mainly on lifestyle or sex, instead of dating. 'Glamour' also advertises to the stereotypical women using
its front page with the advert; "20% off SHOES At Faith for every reader." Magazines can use this effectively, because it represents the expectations
reflected by society and the media.
'Women's Own' is mostly aimed at middle aged housewives, although older people do read it, because it would give them a chance of extended
youth. The front cover for the magazine, (see figure 3,) is dramatically different. It has older soap celebrities, who some women would be able to

Hilton Hotel Case Study
The hotel units (mainly those operating in the luxury segment) believe that the sustainability of their activity involves a balance between the economic
benefits, and the social and environmental responsibilities inherented to their actions.
The global objectives of these hotels are creating long–term value for the company by developing its activities in a balanced way and reconciling the
interests of individuals, nature, and society.
The Hilton chain is currently the second largest hotel chain and the pioneer in global hospitality. It is embedded in a highly competitive market, where
preparation is the key. As such, the training of employees, involvement with the environment, satisfaction and customer relationship are values
prioritised by the brand. For Hilton, the relationship with their customers, is the key to success; values that Conrad Hilton has instituted in the brand
since the first hotel was inaugurated. This continued leadership is a consequence of the fidelity to the vision, mission and values instituted in this hotel
chain, in order to continue being the most hospitable organization in the world.
Our Planet is currently undergoing intense social, cultural, economic, and especially environmental changes. In the middle of this process, tourism

Leo's Analysis
Our industry, the Global Hotels and Resorts, experienced strong growth over the five years to 2015. Over the five–year period, both consumers and
businesses became more confident about their finances and spent freely on luxuries, including travel. This culminated in a substantial increase in travel
rates and hotel room and occupancy rates, two indicators of a hotel 's performance. Travel spending has also picked up quickly, especially in
emerging economies where tourism is on the rise. Global tourist arrivals are expected to increase an annualized 4.8% over the five years to 2015 to

International tourist arrivals in emerging economy destinations, such as Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, will
grow at double the pace of destinations in developed economies. The largest growth will likely be seen in Asia and the Pacific, helping emerging
economies surpass developed economies as the favored destination for tourists by 2015. To keep up with the aggressive rise in travel rates in these
regions, more hotels and resorts will be built, which should increase the proportion of industry revenue generated and drive industry revenue
growth as a whole. Over the five years to 2020, revenue is projected to increase at an annualized rate of 3.4% to $978.7 billion. In 2016 there will
be some new trends emerging as hotels will have to compete with growing popularity of companies such as Airbnb. Millennials have shifted the
focus from hotel loyalty to more novelty related experiences. The overarching experience that many of these hotels in the industry are shifting to is
updated bars and lounges that spill into the lobby. Renovation will be on the upswing over the next few years as guests desire more technology, more
stimulating social experiences, and better food and snack choices. Hotels will be looking to charge more fees and surcharges on amenities as
occupancy rates increase. This goes without saying, demand drives prices, and the hotel industry will be in the driver's seat in the coming years.

The Impact Of Customer Satisfaction On Brand Loyalty
The Research topic: The impact of Customer Satisfaction on Brand Loyalty in the UK. The case study of Hilton Hotels and Resorts.
INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Customer satisfaction is arising as a big challenge in the hospitality industry. Brands are
introducing and accepting in every good economy, which give an indication that customers are not only giving importance to tangible products and
services but they also look for the self–esteem behind the scene.(Sutton, 2003). Dr. Mary Jones from University of Bath (2009) put light to this
particular issue by saying that customer retention is profitable for a company, but it needs quality services, superior values and satisfaction to customer
loyalty with brand. Brand loyalty is necessary to get place in the customer's mind and can only be gained by communicating the brand's philosophy into
the mind of customers through good repute.(Simmon,1999). Customer satisfaction leads to brand loyalty. This is an assumption made very often in the
hospitality industry. Based on this assumption, every company should attach utmost importance to create customer satisfaction. (Kamila,2003). After
customer buying a certain product, it will have a certain degree of effect on brand loyalty from the customer point of view. (Spreng, MacKenzie, and
Olshavsky,1996). Kotler (2001) defined satisfaction as a person's feeling of pleasure or disappointment resulting from comparing a product's perceived
performance, in relation to his or her

The beginning of televisions in hotel rooms to these job positions, Hilton Worldwide proves their recognition as one of the most respected brands in
this industry. In association with that statement, the DoubleTree by Hilton, for instance, has recently teamed up with google to create a YouTube
channel to allow travelers to plan and share their trip ("Trejos," 2013). This is just another prime example of how the Hilton expands and improves, this
time with technological advances in modern times.
In March of 2015, Brandon Potter and JB Snyder discovered the ability to hijack any account with the knowing of the account number for Hilton

bad things happen, Siddhartha chooses to see the good and make the best out of it. Siddhartha says to Kamaswami, "Certainly, I traveled for my
pleasure. For what else? I became acquainted with people and places, I enjoyed trust and friendliness, I found friendship. Now, dear friend, if I were
Kamaswami, then the instant I saw that my purchase was thwarted, I would have angrily hastened back, and time and money would indeed have been
lost" (Hess 61). Siddhartha chose to make a positive experience from his failed trip instead of a negative one. Another way that Siddhartha sees him is

The bills would affect the US government's H2–B visa program, which allows Hoteliers to hire short–term workers. The bills before Congress would increase the number of visas available each year and some of the eligibility requirements would be lifted. If these bills are passed, more seasonal workers would be available for the lodging industry and the money spent recruiting workers could be used elsewhere. http://www.ahla.com/pdf /2007_Visa_Program.pdf According to the American Hotel & Lodging Association, the US Department of Justice is considering changing the accessibility guidelines in the Americans with Disabilities Act. Some of the proposed changes include expansion of turning ranges, making non–public areas accessible, and greater accessibility to non–fixed features. If the proposed changes are accepted it could cost the lodging industry millions. http://www.ahla.com/pdf /2007–ADA.pdf Congress recently extended the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA), which promises aid to insurance companies if another terrorist attack such as 9 /11 occurs. • 3. Hotel Room And Occupancy Rates Our industry, the Global Hotels and Resorts, experienced strong growth over the five years to 2015. Over the five–year period, both consumers and businesses became more confident about their finances and spent freely on luxuries, including travel. This culminated in a substantial increase in travel rates and hotel room and occupancy rates, two indicators of a hotel 's performance. Travel spending has also picked up quickly, especially in emerging economies where tourism is on the rise. Global tourist arrivals are expected to increase an annualized 4.8% over the five years to 2015 to reach 1.2 billion. Over the five years to 2020, revenue is projected to increase at an annualized rate of 3.4% to $978.7 billion. In 2016 there will be some new trends emerging as hotels will have to compete with growing popularity of companies such as Airbnb. Millennials have shifted the focus from hotel loyalty to more novelty related experiences. The overarching experience that many of these hotels in the industry are shifting to is updated bars and lounges that spill into the lobby. Renovation will be on the upswing over the next few years as guests desire more technology, more stimulating social experiences, and better food and snack choices. Hotels will be looking to charge more fees and surcharges on amenities as occupancy rates increase. This goes without saying, demand drives prices, and the hotel industry will be in the driver's seat in the coming years. Key external drivers which drive our industry are: 1) global tourist arrivals (Trends in international and domestic visitor flights and their length of stay influence demand for accommodations. A rise in international and domestic trips positively affects demand for hotels and resorts. The number of global tourist arrivals is expected to increase in 2015), 2) global consumer sentiment index (Trends in international and domestic visitor flights and their length of stay influence demand for accommodations. • 8. Benefits Of A Shift From A Service Based Economy Introduction There is no doubt that nowadays we can observe a shift from a service–based economy to an experience–based economy as owners of businesses tend to commoditize services and thereby offer their customers not a simple service for the money but an unforgettable, special and highly valued experience. The service–profit chain which links the employees', customers' and owners' satisfaction stands behind this experience. These days it is believed that customers want to receive an authentic and remarkable experience for their money, rather than a service which can be offered in every place, they want to feel unique, that is why there is a growing interest in this topic. According to B. Joseph Pine II and James H. Gilmore, "an experience occurs when a company intentionally uses services as the stage and goods as props, to engage individual customers in a way that creates a memorable event" (Pine II, Gilmore, 1998). Therefore, companies are trying to create a specific experience which will help them to distinguish themselves from other companies providing the same service. In order to do that it is very important to understand the links in the service–profit chain. In every business and in a hotel industry especially it is crucial for every manager to understand how to maintain employees' and customers' satisfaction while continuing earning profit for the owner. First of all, every manager should comprehend the links in the service–profit chain, for example, customer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. What Makes A Name Hilton Precisely what is it that makes a name so famous that people from all over the world flock to the most fad destinations spots just to stay in a hotel? When you hear of the name Hilton immediately the images of relaxation, luxury and quality spring into your mind. Yet, what is it that put the name Hilton in such high demand when booking a place to stay? Conrad Hilton the famous impresario built his timeless legacy from the ground up. From humble beginnings as a general store owners son to the founder of over 500 hotels and resorts spread over 78 different countries, Conrad Hilton redefined the meaning of lodging and hospitality and constructed the expectations of what is known today as a stay at the Hilton. Conrad Hilton was born on December 25, 1887 in the desolate city of San Antonio New Mexico. Hilton was the eldest son and worked for his father in a general store. His father wanted him to follow in his proud footsteps and run the general store, young Hilton had other plans. He soon opened his own bank. That short lived business venture ended just in time for what was to happen to Hilton next. He soon became involved in politics and yet again restless Hilton did not stay very long in that profession. He then went into war. During World War II Hilton served his time working with the supplies for the infantry. Due to his knowledge of the general store Hilton's position was second nature to him. After the war Hilton went onto yet another business venture. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Ideology In The Selfish Giant, And The Bling Ring In both the films we watched in class a large range of ideological perspectives were presented, and those perspectives were largely based upon their director's views and opinions of the world. The two films were The Selfish Giant directed by Clio Bernard, and The Bling Ring directed by Sophia Coppola. Ideology is a very important concept in both films, and it can be defined as a systematic body of ideas, attitudes, values and perspectives that help shape a particular culture or group within that culture. Each director uses formal elements, and character values to show specific ideologies. In The Bling Ring Sophia Coppla focuses on showing the life style that a group of corrupt teens so desperately wants to live, and why the culture surrounding them is the reason for their corrupt values. While the film The Selfish Giant highlights issues of working class people, and a culture that has put children in a position where stealing to support ones family feels like doing the right thing. Select characters in each film have a fascination with material things, and although they have very different reasons for them the side effects they experience because of these fascinations are very similar. In The Bling Ring the characters have a strong desire to acquire the most popular, and extravagant fashion items; the motivation behind this desire is that they have learned base their self worth off the things they own and nothing else. INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Customer satisfaction is arising as a big challenge in the hospitality industry. Brands are introducing and accepting in every good economy, which give an indication that customers are not only giving importance to tangible products and services but they also look for the self–esteem behind the scene.(Sutton, 2003). Dr. Mary Jones from University of Bath (2009) put light to this particular issue by saying that customer retention is profitable for a company, but it needs quality services, superior values and satisfaction to customer loyalty with brand. Brand loyalty is necessary to get place in the customer's mind and can only be gained by communicating the brand's philosophy into the mind of customers through good repute.(Simmon,1999). Customer satisfaction leads to brand loyalty. This is an assumption made very often in the hospitality industry. Based on this assumption, every company should attach utmost importance to create customer satisfaction. (Kamila,2003). After customer buying a certain product, it will have a certain degree of effect on brand loyalty from the customer point of view. (Spreng, MacKenzie, and Olshavsky,1996).
