Folly Of Choice Research Paper
If there are no good choices how much responsibility for the outcome rests with the chooser? In
2005 many people evacuated themselves from the New Orleans area in anticipation of one of
history's most powerful storms, Hurricane Katrina. Others chose not to until a mandatory evacuation
notice went out one day before the storm hit. Despite this order to leave many residents remained in
their homes. Some of these people died. Others lost everything they had except their lives. The
public blamed these people for the folly of their choice. Michael Brown of FEMA was quoted as
saying the high death toll was "attributable a lot to people who did not heed the advance warning."
(Brown CNN.com 2005) Radio personality Neal Boortz said that people should ... Show more

The question is about who gets to decide. Decide to be stupid or thoughtful; shortsighted or mature.
To decide based on risks or how one is viewed by others. Choice is complex but ultimately we do
make the choices that affect the direction of our days. These decisions are not made in a vacuum.
Research shows that there are many influences that factor into the process. From too little
information to too much information or even the wrong information. Some factors are out of our
control, such as biological responses and others can be mitigated with education, insight, and
awareness on our part. We assume that having more choices is good, chafing at whatever might try
to limit them. Yet too many choices can inhibit our ability to make good choices. Choice overload
causes us to delay decisions, make poor decisions and be less satisfied with what we choose. Our
upbringing and the environmental context of our lives shape our understanding of the options
available to us. Our moral conscience, our sense of responsibility, giving consideration to
consequences and the effects on others guide what options are deemed acceptable. They also
sometimes show that the only choices available can have no good outcomes. Do we make our own
choices? Yes, we do, but "Once we take into account the influences...the scope of our choices is
much narrower than we have long assumed. (Greenfield

Funny Girl and the American Musical
In 1963, Jule Styne, Arthur Laurents, and Isobel Lennart premiered a new musical called Funny
Girl, based on the life of Fanny Brice. This American Musical was about one of the most famous
female vaudevillian comediennes that was famous for her character "Baby Snooks", a naughty
mischievous little girl in a forty each old woman's body. "Baby Snooks" made tons of appearances
in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1910, 1921 and the radio. She not only was able to make people laugh but
her songs such as "My Man" and "I'd Rather Be Blue" could make a person cry. Brice was such a
well–rounded performer yet suffered a lot of heartbreak in her life with three failed marriages. Ray
Stark, the producer supervisor of the Broadway musical, happened to start this biopic project
because he was married to Frances Brice, Fanny Brice's daughter. Fanny's story of going from rags
to riches was inspiring to not only Stark but to the future of musical theatre lovers. She changed the
face of beauty that the Follies were known for and instead brought these characters and skits to
make people adore her and her looks. Brice also invented a new form of Jewish female comedy
which had never been seen in vaudeville before giving the show more ways to showcase her as a
Jewish girl who was never a type before. The Broadway musical soon turned into a Hollywood
motion picture and in both showed how the evolution

A Young Man's Folly Short Summary
Sadly, not all marriages have good endings. This could be caused by several reasons, such as falling
out of love, neglect, or lack of communication. The latter is the main cause of the short story A
Young Man's Folly by Susan Michalicka. The story revolves around a modern family, where a boy
tries to deal with the loss of his father leaving him. Michalicka conveys the message of: "Sometimes
when you're chasing something, you lose sight of what is really important" very well through the use
of conflict, characterization and symbolism.
Conflict was used effectively in the short story to reveal the theme of the story. The boy has an
internal conflict about which parent to stay with, and because his father left, he seemed to have
favored him. He wanted him back so badly that every night, he watches him on the six o'clock news
while wearing his old jackets. He was blinded by his father's sudden departure that he forgot about
what is really important. Additionally, another development in the short story's conflict has been
used effectively to reveal the theme. When the boy went to Macdonald's to see his father's true
colors, he thought: "I finished my drink quickly, thankful that he had to be back in the studio for the
news." By the time he saw his dad for the first time in a while, he knew he was not the man he
thought he was. At that moment, he also realized that he lost sight of what he had all this time: His
mother's unconditional love. If it wasn't for the characterization of

The Folly And Dual Identities Of The Victorian Society

The Folly and Dual Identities of the Victorian Society
Stephen Colbert states, "Status is always ripe for satire; status is always good for comedy." The
timeless message of the social elite's obsession with their self–imposed high statuses is the target of
Oscar Wilde's satirical play, The Importance of Being Earnest. Wilde defaces the reputations elites
upheld in the Victorian era and outlines the deviant display of Victorian manners as hypocritical.
The quick–witted dialogue of his characters incites comedy which masks the underlying criticism of
the Victorian way of life. Oscar Wilde's masterful use of satire, the neologism Bunbury, and
mockery of the Victorian society establish the theme of duality embedded throughout the play, The
Importance of Being Earnest.
Satire is applied to highlight the folly embedded in Victorian logic, demonstrated by their manner of
addressing important matters with triviality. Lady Bracknell, a Victorian social elite condemns
Algernon's neologism Bunbury's history of terminal illnesses, an unexpected approach to the
situation considering the uncontrollable nature of illnesses. Lady Bracknell advised, "...it is high
time that Mr. Bunbury made up his mind whether he was going to live or die. This shilly–shallying
with the question is absurd" (Wilde 9). The folly of the Victorian elite is apparent in the manner with
which Lady Bracknell demeans the seriousness of

Brilliant Folly: the Role of Feste
In William Shakespeare 's comedy Twelfth Night, it is ironic how many times the fool is said to be
dishonest, when, in fact, his role proves entirely opposite. Though sometimes the characters do not
realize his hidden messages, the reader can instantly comprehend Feste 's figurative language, which
is evident in every scene in which the fool appears. Whether he is singing to Orsino, arguing with
Malvolio, or playing around with Viola, Feste always manages to sneak in a few symbolic
foretokens before his exit. His keen eye and fast wit help him to actively partake in the portrayal of
the story, however, the fool is merely present to express that which cannot be fully expressed
through the lines of other characters. Through his songs, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Feste 's common, witty remarks show the reader many significant truths about life in Illyria, and she
can also apply them to her own experiences.
Feste 's quick ability to play on the words of others also helps him illustrate his views on many
subjects. After Olivia commands the fool be taken away because he is dry, meaning not amusing,
Feste slyly twists her words with a good pun. "For give the dry fool drink, then is / the Fool not dry"
(1.5.41–42). His artfulness amuses Olivia, and the fool is allowed to stay. Also, while they are
speaking to each other, Feste and Viola hold a conversation consisting entirely of wordplay.
"Viola: Save the, friend, and thy music. Dost thou live by the tabor?
Fool: No, sir, I live by the church.
Viola: Art thou a churchman?
Fool: No such matter, sir. I do live by the church, for I do live at my house, and my house doth stand
by the church" (3.1.1–7).
Here, the fool 's words help Viola realize how important diction is, and also how deceiving it can be.
This awareness helps her to choose her words more carefully from that point on. Though his reasons
for using puns vary each time, their collective message is best summed up by Feste himself when he
states, "A sentence is/ but a chevril glove to a good wit. How quickly the/ wrong side may be turned
outward" (3.1.11–13).
Through Feste 's clever use of language, he takes on a role separate from his character. Although he

Romeo And Juliet Folly Quotes
Romeo and Juliet: Victims of Feud All teenagers have stupid ideas, especially in the play The
Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. In the play, two star crossed lovers meet, but there is a long standing
family feud between the two. Romeo and Juliet eventually meet and fall in love despite the families
hating each other. Fate and folly are major contributing factors, but it is feud that is most to blame
for the star crossed lovers death. First and foremost, the lovers Romeo and Juliet seemed destined
from the very beginning to a sad fate. For example, in the play's Prologue, the two are described as
"Star–crossed lovers" (prologue.6), which implies that the two lovers are doomed. While the two
lovers have still yet to meet, they plan to attend the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning of the play it come clear that the two "Star–Crossed lovers" are from two
conflicting families. For instance the prologue states Two households, both alike in dignity (In fair
Verona, where we lay our scene), From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood
makes civil hands unclean. (Prologue.1–4). This explains to us that the two families (The
Montagues and Capulets) are of the same social standing, and are in a uncivil family feud. Later in
the story after Romeo and Juliet have already met, Juliet cries out "O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art
thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name, or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and
I'll no longer be a Capulet." (2.2.36–39) Juliet is willing to give up her family name to be with her
love Romeo. After Romeo kills Tybalt, cousin of juliet, Juliet first takes the side of her family and
rejects Romeo, but later taking his side. Juliet expresses her feelings by saying "Shall I speak ill of
him that is my husband? Ah, poor my lord, what tongue shall smooth thy

The Folly of Rewarding a While Hoping for B
Kerr's observation on "The folly of rewarding A while hoping for B is true today, simply illustrates
the sometimes fouled up rewards systems that most companies have in place. Fouled up in the sense
that most companies wrongly reward not so positive behaviours while hoping and expecting for
better ones.
Kushell, E., Michael A, Heide D and Bosserman N, in their article explain that "Kerr's words help
explain today's disappointing competitive results." They further explain that most organisations
continue to reward less productive behaviour, using the example of getting a job done being more
important that how the job gets done at the expense of long term gains in productivity.

In my organization, performance is measured by different parameters for different departments. The
performance of the sales department team is measured by the number of sales made and the amount
of revenue generated. For cabin crew members, performance is weighed through a number of ways
and primarily through frequent on–board appraisals. These appraisals are often conducted by senior
cabin crew members and are measured against certain standard factors such as interaction with
passengers and colleagues and general activities carried out on the flight. This appraisal system
applies to all cabin crew members, however seniors in the company have an additional way through
which they are appraised where junior cabin crew members have the equal opportunity to rate their
seniors as well making the performance evaluation processes two– way. Another way performance
is measured is through attendance. Points are deducted for absenteeism and lateness and anyone
with a good track record of attendance is considered a good performer.
Good performance is rewarded through timely job promotions, special recognition and in some
cases monetary rewards and incentives.
Is this system of appraisal effective? Not always. Could this be strategically improved? Definitely.
The major downside of this appraisal system is that it is often generic, routine and repetitive. For
example, the appraisal forms used to rate performance has remained unchanged for over a decade
such that the appraised

The Bible Is Full Of Wisdom And Folly
The Bible is full of wisdom and folly. This essay will evaluate the concepts of diligent people in
Hebrew wisdom being wise, while the lazy person is a fool. The major part of the essay will
concentrate in Proverbs, but we will review some scriptures from Ecclesiastes. Proverbs was written
by Solomon, and he wrote it out of concern for his children. Ecclesiastes is said to have been written
by Solomon, but this is not certain. Both books can be used by all for guidance, regardless of their
age. Proverbs in general concentrates on moral virtues, and the opposite, their vices. The main
theme of the book is the fear of the Lord, as it is seen fourteen times in Proverbs. Ecclesiastes main
theme is life without God is empty, pointlessness and without meaning. There are a lot of
contrasting chapters and verses comparing the differences between being wise and foolish, the
wicked and righteous and the lazy and hardworking. Both books mainly concentrate on the contrasts
between evil and good and foolishness and wisdom. So, let's look at some verses and relate the
concepts, describe and compare them to being diligent (wise) or laziness (foolish).
In Proverbs 15:19 it says "The way of a sluggard is like a hedge of thorns, but the path of the upright
is a level highway" (ESV). This saying corroborates the points of Proverbs concerning the directives
that diligence is the way of the wise and the path with less resistance. But the path of laziness is
foolishness and filled with trouble,

Analysis Of Venus Cupid Folly And Time
Also known by the titles "Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time" and "A Triumph of Venus", this painting
was on purpose designed as a complex, erotic allegory that includes an extent of iconographic
symbols from the ancient world of mythology. It was a present from Cosimo de Medici to King
Francis I of France. Being rich and vivid in symbolism relating to the constituting ideas of the High
Renaissance, the painting gives Bronzino the opportunity to establish his maestro figure painting
and portrait art. Through personification of qualities and varying contrast and brightness, Bronzino
is able to justify that personal gains outweigh anything and everything that is moral. The picture
symbolizes the aftermath of incestuous actions. Venus is evidently present at the center of the
painting, recognizable by the golden apple in her left hand from the Greek myth The Judgement of
Paris. A robust adolescent male figure with wings can be seen entwined with her. It is her son,
Cupid. The undeniable sexuality of their embrace has long been debated over as scandalous
behavior. Rather than channeling the act of incest in itself, Bronzino exploits these two as symbols
for the personification of male and female sexuality. Whichever case it may be, the erotic narrative
of the painting becomes instantly clear. Venus, determined to get Cupid's arrow submits to dire
endeavors when Cupid refuses and tries to distract him by seducing him while she takes the arrow
from him. Venus and Cupid are painted

Erasmus And The Praise Of Folly
During the Renaissance of the sixteenth century, Europe experienced a golden age of new works of
art, literature, and advancement in medicine. However, as these advancements spread across the
European nation–states, the order of the Protestant Reformation began to rise. Christian humanists
and middle–class patrons opposed the religious mores, creating unorthodox standpoints of the
European Christendom. Likewise, in Erasmus' The Praise of Folly, the allegorical figure, Dame
Folly, criticizes the follies of influential groups and individuals of the sixteenth century. Rather than
creating a written work that agrees with the conventional views and methods of the period, Erasmus
takes a modern approach instead. Erasmus uses a peculiar technique ... Show more content on

When one provides criticism, it is usually directed to those in the same social division, especially
those one is close with. In addition, the feedback is delivered in a calm and courteous tone. This
combination would prevent those that are receiving the feedback from feeling embarrassed or
uneasy. However, Erasmus does the opposite, through which he bluntly attacks groups that are
highly influential during the Renaissance period: doctors, lawyers, artists, scientists, and
theologians. Dame Folly appoints them as having "the greatest affinity with folly" (lines 29–30).
More specifically, medicine is more rhetoric than true, artists are merely complacent, and those in
the religious community do not deserve "the religious" and "monks" titles. In addition, although
Erasmus specifically addresses these disciplines, his discernments also expose the follies of all
human beings. However, it is easier to use the titles of those of higher status, for it receives more
attention. Essentially, it is a bold decision to stand out against those that make up what is the
Renaissance or what has become socially accepted. Similar to the function of satire, attacking higher
individuals creates a controversial quarrel. Furthermore, modern works usually result in these
quarrels and unexpected reactions, for the audience are not accustomed to what they are viewing. As
a result, Erasmus' usage of modern techniques helps publicize his message across

Indeed, the use of the word folly was controversial, especially due to the connotation that the word

If you are looking for ways to make money, try thinking of something that you can offer to a niche

that people are afraid to stand out and go against the grain. The truth is that most online business
websites look like one another.
Way back during the dot come boom, coming up with the next cutting edge solution was the

that idea down. Just think back to the year 1996. You are excited because you have determined that
you are going to develop an online business in which you will give everything away for free. What

Hebrew Teaching on Diligence and Follies
Hebrew Teaching on Diligence and Follies The two words, wisdom, and folly are inseparable; they
cannot be away from each other. Folly is the act of having the knowledge of the benefits of making a
good choice, but rather choosing the wrong or foolish decision. Diligence is the act of being aware
of something. Therefore, one who often postpones activities and comes up with excuses is lazy
(Hindson & Yates, 2012). The Hebrew wisdom books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Songs of Songs,

Autobiography Of The Vaudeville Era
The Vaudeville Era was an incredibly influential time for American musical theatre. It's existence
gave rise to several performers from classic vaudeville acts to Ziegfeld Follies performers, and
burlesque dancers. From (and contributing to) it's death sprang popular new mediums of
performance and entertainment (Revue, Radio, Talkies, and Burlesque). There is little surprise that
nostalgia for vaudeville began closely after its "death" and continues to influence many forms of
American entertainment today. "Gypsy" is story about a family vaudeville–centered act trying to
make it in a time when vaudeville was dying out. The story contains content about vaudeville and
burlesque as it is a biography of the famous burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee. "Gypsy"
followed Gypsy Rose Lee from vaudeville to burlesque. Burlesque was synonymous with stripping
at this time and is partially credited with "killing" vaudeville. In the movie "Gypsy", the narrator and
mother of Miss Gypsy Rose Lee made a comment about how "washed up vaudeville acts go to
burlesque". because the narration was done from the point of view of Gypsy's mother, the vernacular
included early to mid 1900's slang such as "the big time" (best vaudeville circuit / Orpheum Circuit)
and "banana oil" (a ridiculous or wrong statement). Gypsy features many musical numbers, many of
which are the musical acts performed by Gypsy throughout her life; both in vaudeville and

I personally had to research the word "folly", due to it not being a "common" word in my

although it is descriptive of the effects of alcohol. Recalling the feeling of "an out of body
experience", and a feeling of unreality, is somewhat the picture of drinking beer paints. NBB using
the word folly, is advertising that their product will allow you to experience the feeling of
foolishness and unreality. In foolishness, your thought process is distorted, which hinders
appropriate decisions, of which many drinkers enjoy. A study conducted revealed that beer drinkers
consume alcohol to relieve stress, relax their minds, and allow the opportunity to socialize more
openly with strangers (Jayne, Valentine, & Holloway, 2010, p. 546). If the intent of NBB using the
word folly, is to entice beer drinkers to achieve the feeling of foolishness, I understand the

Essay about A Biography of Josephine Baker
A Biography of Josephine Baker
Josephine Baker was born Freda Josephine MacDonald in St. Louis, Missouri to her unwed parents:
Carrie McDonald and Eddie Carson. Her father soon left the family and Josephine had to help her
mother support herself and her three younger half–siblings. At age eight, she got a job working as a
maid for a white family (Robinson). At age 12, she had dropped out of school to work. By age 14,
she had moved out, been married, and separated from her first husband. She would later go onto
marry and divorce three more men. Never was she financially dependent on any man, including her
husbands.
Her stage career began in 1919 in the United States when she toured with The Jones Family Band

In 1936, Josephine attempted a return to the United States to star in the Ziegfield Follies. Due to the
still prevalent racism in the United States, she was greeted with negative reviews. Americans were
not yet ready to embrace a black woman as sophisticated and powerful, despite her success in
Europe (About).
Just a few years later, World War II spread across Europe. Josephine helped out France in every way
she could: performing for troops, being an honorable correspondent for the French Resistance
(smuggling secret messages), and serving as a sub–lieutenant in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force
(About). For her efforts, she was later awarded the Medal of the Resistance with Rosette and dubbed
a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government.
In the 50s and 60s, Josephine returned to the United States to help fight racism. She refused to
perform in any club or theatre that was not integrated (Lewis). This resulted in the breaking of the
color bar in many establishments, especially in Las Vegas. May 20 was named Josephine Baker day
by the NAACP for her efforts. Part of her fight against racism came in the form of the "Rainbow
Tribe." She adopted 12 children to demonstrate that "children of different ethnicities and religions
could still be brothers" (About). The children would sometimes

Erasmus Praise Of Folly Essay
Humor and Criticism in Erasmuss Praise of Folly Humor and Criticism in Praise of Folly
Erasmus's Praise of Folly is a humor–filled satire of pretty much everything. It is filled with wit and
sarcasm which make light of serious problems and blow insignificant issues out of proportion all the
while bringing a smile to the reader's face. It is not stinging humor at the expense of others (unless,
of course, the shoe fits), rather it is directed towards everyone. Erasmus even includes himself in the
joke, practically parodying himself in the first section (xvi). In Praise of Folly, Erasmus uses this
humor to criticize without the harsh judgment of seriousness. His humor parallels the import of his
subject. When Folly discusses the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is why Folly asks her audience to listen not with the ears "you use for preachers of sermons,
but the ears you usually prick up for mountebanks, clowns, and fools" (10). Humor in this situation
lowers the defenses of one who might otherwise take offense to Erasmus's criticism. He chose Folly
to carry his message because "truth has a genuine power to please if it manages not to give offence,
but this is something the gods have granted only to fools" (57). He does not single out specific
individuals or limit himself to specific groups of people; he includes almost everybody. Only the
fools who personify the lightheartedness and happiness that are the essence of Erasmus's comedy
escape this criticism.
Erasmus even includes himself as a subject of this whimsical criticism showing that it is meant to be
constructive not harshly judgmental as it was taken by his many critics. His criticisms of wise men,
Seneca, women, and pedantry all apply to himself and he jokes about them all (xvi). He knows that,
in her first and most humorous voice, Folly is criticizing aspects of life that are of small significance
in comparison to her later targets, and Erasmus takes no shame in admitting his participation in such
minor foolishness. With Folly's first voice, Erasmus points out the insignificant foolishness that
plays into every person's life, including his own, with

Theme Of Folly In Romance Of The Rose
In the French poem, the Romance of the Rose, Lady Reason states "Happy is the man who learns
from his folly," (De Lorris and De Meun, 46). Lady Reason's statement is true for the Lover in the
Romance of the Rose. Folly are the mistakes caused by one's foolishness; in this case, the Lover's
folly is his impatience with the rose. Happiness is when a man succeeds in attaining his desire; in
which the Lover does so by obtaining the rose in a chivalry manner. Therefore, through chivalry,
courtesy, and love, the Lover was able to be happy by learning from his folly. Moreover, this is
significant because this shows the audience, specifically men, on how to love and how to display
courtly behavior. The Lover's folly, or mistakes caused by his ... Show more content on

The God of Love instructs the Lover to "keep yourself from pride, for he who has understanding and
discernment knows that pride is foolish and sinful," therefore, the God of Love is suggesting that
pride is a man's folly (34). Furthermore, he is teaching the Lover to also be generous and light–
hearted. He also advices the Lover to "not paint your face or wear make–up," because by doing so,
he will be unmanly (33). Thus, this shows that by learning from his folly or his act of impatience,
the Lover was able to achieve happiness in the end because he learned proper chivalry. The teaching
of chivalry in the Romance of the Rose is significant because it is as if the God of Love, or better yet
the narrators, are teaching men on how to display chivalry behavior, which is important in a new
courtly world. Thus, this also displayed that chivalry can now be learned. Another quality that the
Lover learns from his folly, in order to attain happiness, is courtesy, or the inside behavior between
men and women. Along with chivalry, the Lover also learns ways to be courteous. As his teacher,
the God of Love tells the Lover "be courteous and approachable, speaking gently and reasonably to
high and low alike," (32). This shows that the God of Love is not only teaching the Lover to have
chivalry, but also courtesy. By having courtesy, towards the woman, he will be able to achieve
happiness, which is when he

God Bless America by Irving Berlin
"God Bless America" is one of Irving Berlin's best known songs. We hear it at ceremonies, at
sporting events, all over across the United States. It was originally composed by Berlin in 1918
while he was serving in the U.S. Army. He set the song aside for a while and didn't pick it back up
until he later revised the piece in 1938. The most famous version of this song was recorded by Kate
Smith. It is even considered her signature song. The songs genre is considered to be an American
patriotic song. He received criticism at first, especially from Anti–Semitic groups because Berlin
was Russian born and Jewish. However, the song gained quick popularity and was even used by
Roosevelt as his official campaign song. The song is often played at sporting events and was sung as
a tribute by Celine Dion after the terrorist attacks of September 11th. "God Bless America" was
originally written for a full orchestra and was first performed that way by Kate Smith with a choir
singing backup vocals as well. The piece is written in the key of F major and is in cut time. The
tempo is set at moderato, however, in Kate's original performance many liberties were taken in
terms of tempo. Berlin, drafted by the Army during World War I to write songs of patriotism, wrote
the song but decided it was not fitting for the "Yip Yip Yaphank" series that he was doing. The song
only resurfaced when Kate Smith's manager asked Berlin if he something patriotic that she could

Talley's Folly Play Analysis
The play Talley's Folly is set in the 1940's (1944) just outside Lebanon, Missouri in an old, run
down boathouse. This play was written by an American playwright, Lanford Wilson in 1979 about
two "odd ducks" who find each other and realize that love isn't just about having kids. In this
performance I really enjoyed the set. It was very clear it was an old, rickety boathouse and did not
need much explaining. Dariusz Korbiel did very well designing the set so you didn't have to focus
much on figuring out where they were. I also really enjoyed the chemistry on stage, you could tell
there was tension between the two but they also needed each other. Johnny Bobesich and Jessica

Folly, Temptation And Death In Homer's The Odyssey
The Odyssey by Homer is a great text that manipulates the skill of storytelling bringing out the
meaning of being human, the spiritual and physical homecoming. It is an archetypal epic expedition
essential for understanding ourselves and other modern texts following the same pattern. The text
brings out the ancient Greek beliefs and customs that are essential in studying Western Literature
through the evaluation of different characters, and the themes manifested are essential in
establishing a good foundation for any literature student. The themes therein such as leadership
skills, folly, retaliation, mythology, death, ogres, temptation seduction, deceit, and warfare make the
text an essential student companion in the quest of comprehending literature. First, the themes of
Folly, Temptation and Death are essential to freshmen in understanding everyday life. Folly
contributes to the reckless behavior evident in men; temptation makes one lose focus on their
objective, in this case, Odysseus's homecoming (Byrant, 1872, p.237, line 79). The folly in
Odysseus's crew make them ignore the warning from the captain consequently losing their
shipmates, and the suitors despise the eagles' warning on the return of Odysseus hence meeting their

As such, the theme being universal, could as well be applicable in the western culture making the
text an essential material for the freshmen to have an understanding of the power of love and the far
it can push individuals to defend it. Inasmuch as Odyssey stays away from his wife Penelope for a
long time, the love for her motivates him to work hard to his homecoming, overcoming major
hurdles (Byrant, 1872, p.136 line 695). His loyalty made him to persevere the challenges to go back
to join the love of his life thereby giving him courage and hope throughout the war that lasted for

In Praise of Folly
In Praise of Folly – Erasmus' Dichotomy
The Silenus box is a "case carved like an ugly Silenus" that can be "opened to reveal beautiful,
precious objects" (Erasmus 43, footnote). This box appears in Erasmus' Praise of Folly as a
metaphor for the central claim in the novel, which is that that which appears to be Folly (ugly)
externally, is wise (precious) within. Erasmus reveals this dichotomy on three levels: in the image of
the box itself, in his genuine praise of Folly, and in the structure of the novel as a whole.
Erasmus, using the female voice of Folly, introduces his reader to the image of the Silenus box early
in the text, thereby allowing his reader to carry the image with her for the rest of her time reading
(and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Folly, being folly, goes on from her initial description of the box to give the majority of her list
backwards (although she begins correctly), claiming that if the list goes in one direction, it must, of
course, go in the opposite direction as well (she's a woman –– you can't expect her to be reasonable
(28)). To do this, she abruptly inserts the word "conversely" (43), and continues with a long
backward list. "Life will turn out to be death; beauty will become ugliness," and so on, she says
(43). In this backwards list, good outsides cloak bad insides. She then uses this inverted list as a
springboard to celebrate wise appearances (although this is the exact opposite of the central message
of the book, which is the celebration of foolish appearances).
She declares that esteemed members of the community are truly members of her (Folly's) clan, and
that all they have of wisdom is its appearance. "Kings and great courtiers... find suitable pretexts"
within which they can steal from their citizens and live in luxury so that "downright injustice at least
has some appearance of justice" (107–8). "Popes, cardinals and bishops" also behave artificially.
They "play" their "roles" with "theatrical pomp" and "ceremonies," but as much as they abide by the
superficial demands of their positions,

The letter opens with two sections addressing the follies of both Paganism and Judaism. It discusses
their outrageous customs and rites, and he does not continue in depth or spend time discussing

against Christianity by declaring Christian rationality in apposition of the delusional religions. He

Dame Folly Demonstrates The Nature Of Choices

Machiavellian Folly in The Prince Essay
Machiavellian Folly in The Prince
In the annals of history, many individuals have contributed great works of literature, waxing
philosophically on the meaning of life, death, and love. Niccolo Machiavelli wrote not on love or
life, but on power: How to capture it, how to consolidate it, and how to defend it against all comers.
His work has been talked about and dissected to the extent that his subject matter and methods have
earned their own moniker: Machiavellian. Nonetheless, this great philosopher's works did not meet
with unanimous approval. His own student, Thomas Hobbes, presented a very different account of
politics. This essay offers a Hobbesian critique of some of Machiavelli's arguments, focusing in and

2 Humans, according to Machiavelli, are not the morally grounded beings the Bible espouses them
to be. He writes in The Prince: "For one can say this generally of men: that they are ungrateful,
fickle, pretenders and dissemblers, evaders of danger, eager for gain.3" Clearly, Machiavelli argues
that man is precarious – a being of dubious morals and selfish desires. Hobbes agreed with this
analysis, and took it one step further. According to Hobbes, all mankind has a restless and perpetual
desire for power, which "ceaseth only with death"4. Moreover, man can never be satisfied with the
power he has. Hobbes writes:
... [man] cannot assure the power and the means to live well, which he hath present, without the
acquisition of more [power].
Man's first need is to provide security for himself. Past experience and reason dictate that he will do
this by any means necessary – even if it means killing everyone around him. Critics argue that
Hobbes and Machiavelli are too pessimistic; but they would both beg to differ. To both Hobbes and
Machiavelli, Aristotelian virtue is a deception; it can never be reached. Men do not want to be good;
they want to lie, they want to cheat, and they want to kill. To expect otherwise would be contrary to
their hostile nature. To both Hobbes and Machiavelli, political analysis must begin by identifying
the human being for what he really is – a self–interested, self–seeking

Analysis Of Erasmus's Praise Of Folly
In Erasmus's "Praise of Folly," Erasmus discusses how Folly is indebted into her wisdom. Folly, the
daughter of Plutus and Youth, wants to inform all of the great gods that she can bring joy to
everyone. She wanted to build an empire of her own, since there was not one built for her. Many of
the gods during that time had the perception that many women did not know what they were talking
about, and were seen as simple minded. However, Folly has the idea that people will not be able to
create or form any relationship without her power. Since Folly believes that no one takes her serious,
or any of her propositions, she wants to show everyone that life would not be the same without her.
In a sense, Folly is giving herself credit so that everyone can value her even more. As she is talking
about herself, she is giving everyone else the opportunity to see what kind of person she really is.
Erasmus states that "I am the one – and indeed, the only one – whose divine powers can gladden the
hearts of gods and men" (9). This quote explains the idea of Folly proving to everyone that life
would not be the same without her. Words such "divine powers" and "gladden" can depict the idea
that Folly is going to do whatever it takes to her point across to the gods and everyone else. As
Erasmus explains that Folly is the cause of life for everyone, he also describes how she is the cause
of human interactions. Humans bond so that they can form a connection with one another. Folly

The Folly Of Secularism By Jeffrey Stout
The Muslim headscarf, or Hijab has been a matter of ongoing debate and controversy in the secular
state that is France. Secularism does not exist in a vacuum in France it builds upon 'complicated
emotional inheritance, specifically the negotiation between the religious and state secularism which
appears to continually lead to an image of hostility being constructed for Islam, despite the
promotion of universality that is allegedly key to the French Republic. This essay discusses the
Hijab in France in regard to Jeffrey Stout's 'The Folly of Secularism' and is structured in three main
parts. It looks at how Secularism is intensely debated and contested, the way in which event
intellectual, political, social shifts are changing through analysing firstly the controversy itself, then
laïcité. Secondly, through looking to different aspects of French secular society; law, media and
education. and thirdly, as per Stouts framework, discusses how the topic takes us to the heart of the
most pressing issues of today, Gender politics, French state personality/nationhood and the
Islamophobia that is a result of all of these things. The headscarf affair was generated by multiple
social anxieties, namely the preservation of laïcité. The headscarf Controversy in France illuminates
the politics of secularity in the way that it reaches across all social and political aspects of secular

Music Is A Universal Language
"Music is a universal language" is such a cliché phrase. But there's some truth to it. You listen to an
opera, most of the time is sung in a foreign language, you could not care much how little you
understand the song because the music carries you through the piece. There has been studies that
music can calm a person, makes them agitated, or even motivated. Other studies states that the
music we listen to can tell what type of personality one person has.
My musical preference, though all over the place at times, is mainly focused on theatrical show
tunes. When choosing a song for this essay, I originally chose an aria from Bernstein's operetta,
Candide, which was "Glitter and Be Gay." Though I love the music, it did not speak to me as it is
comic operetta song. Ultimately, I chose something from Stephen Sondheim's catalogue, a song
called "I'm Still Here" from the musical Follies. Though it isn't my favorite song of all time, it
evokes the feeling of survivalism and a sense that you can weather through anything. The more I
listen to this song over time, the more it gets more poignant.
The song "I'm Still Here" came from the musical, Follies, written by Stephen Sondheim. Though it
tells a story of two middle–aged couple, coming to the theater where they all first met and express
regret of choices in their lives and their unhappiness with each other's spouses, many of the songs in
the show, especially "I'm Still Here", are not consequential to the plot of the musical.

Analysis Of The Sum Of Our Follies
The Sum of Our Follies (2014) is a recent Malaysian fictional work written by Shih–Li Kow. It is a
"regional" piece a addressing the most conspicuous "thrillers" of place's meaning and literary
imagination. The story hinges upon several episodes in a small town called Lubok Sayong and other
replaces. Furthermore, the plot includes a number of perennial actions which perpetuate the token of
"proximity" shared by the lives of Lubok Sayong's inhabitants who reciprocate their visions in an
agnate perspective on life. It is an inherent call for the common sense of human individuality in a
collective "place" uniting different "ways of life." These people are the authentic human
phenomenon in a fictional setting. In fact, the story depicts real life images, such as contemporary
Malaysian peripheries; and challenged once again by socio–cultural apathy, the specter of the story's
fictional "pluralism" and the affectionate buoyancy of Shih–Li Kow who "seems particularly

The novel tells the story of a middle–aged man called Auyong, or the narrator, and an orphan girl

Folly Of Choice Research Paper

  • 1. Folly Of Choice Research Paper If there are no good choices how much responsibility for the outcome rests with the chooser? In 2005 many people evacuated themselves from the New Orleans area in anticipation of one of history's most powerful storms, Hurricane Katrina. Others chose not to until a mandatory evacuation notice went out one day before the storm hit. Despite this order to leave many residents remained in their homes. Some of these people died. Others lost everything they had except their lives. The public blamed these people for the folly of their choice. Michael Brown of FEMA was quoted as saying the high death toll was "attributable a lot to people who did not heed the advance warning." (Brown CNN.com 2005) Radio personality Neal Boortz said that people should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The question is about who gets to decide. Decide to be stupid or thoughtful; shortsighted or mature. To decide based on risks or how one is viewed by others. Choice is complex but ultimately we do make the choices that affect the direction of our days. These decisions are not made in a vacuum. Research shows that there are many influences that factor into the process. From too little information to too much information or even the wrong information. Some factors are out of our control, such as biological responses and others can be mitigated with education, insight, and awareness on our part. We assume that having more choices is good, chafing at whatever might try to limit them. Yet too many choices can inhibit our ability to make good choices. Choice overload causes us to delay decisions, make poor decisions and be less satisfied with what we choose. Our upbringing and the environmental context of our lives shape our understanding of the options available to us. Our moral conscience, our sense of responsibility, giving consideration to consequences and the effects on others guide what options are deemed acceptable. They also sometimes show that the only choices available can have no good outcomes. Do we make our own choices? Yes, we do, but "Once we take into account the influences...the scope of our choices is much narrower than we have long assumed. (Greenfield ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Funny Girl And The American Musical Analysis Domeneque Claude Gordon Farrell Drama in the U.S December 17, 2017 Funny Girl and the American Musical In 1963, Jule Styne, Arthur Laurents, and Isobel Lennart premiered a new musical called Funny Girl, based on the life of Fanny Brice. This American Musical was about one of the most famous female vaudevillian comediennes that was famous for her character "Baby Snooks", a naughty mischievous little girl in a forty each old woman's body. "Baby Snooks" made tons of appearances in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1910, 1921 and the radio. She not only was able to make people laugh but her songs such as "My Man" and "I'd Rather Be Blue" could make a person cry. Brice was such a well–rounded performer yet suffered a lot of heartbreak in her life with three failed marriages. Ray Stark, the producer supervisor of the Broadway musical, happened to start this biopic project because he was married to Frances Brice, Fanny Brice's daughter. Fanny's story of going from rags to riches was inspiring to not only Stark but to the future of musical theatre lovers. She changed the face of beauty that the Follies were known for and instead brought these characters and skits to make people adore her and her looks. Brice also invented a new form of Jewish female comedy which had never been seen in vaudeville before giving the show more ways to showcase her as a Jewish girl who was never a type before. The Broadway musical soon turned into a Hollywood motion picture and in both showed how the evolution ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. A Young Man's Folly Short Summary Sadly, not all marriages have good endings. This could be caused by several reasons, such as falling out of love, neglect, or lack of communication. The latter is the main cause of the short story A Young Man's Folly by Susan Michalicka. The story revolves around a modern family, where a boy tries to deal with the loss of his father leaving him. Michalicka conveys the message of: "Sometimes when you're chasing something, you lose sight of what is really important" very well through the use of conflict, characterization and symbolism. Conflict was used effectively in the short story to reveal the theme of the story. The boy has an internal conflict about which parent to stay with, and because his father left, he seemed to have favored him. He wanted him back so badly that every night, he watches him on the six o'clock news while wearing his old jackets. He was blinded by his father's sudden departure that he forgot about what is really important. Additionally, another development in the short story's conflict has been used effectively to reveal the theme. When the boy went to Macdonald's to see his father's true colors, he thought: "I finished my drink quickly, thankful that he had to be back in the studio for the news." By the time he saw his dad for the first time in a while, he knew he was not the man he thought he was. At that moment, he also realized that he lost sight of what he had all this time: His mother's unconditional love. If it wasn't for the characterization of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Folly And Dual Identities Of The Victorian Society Angela Reyes Mrs. Garner AP English Literature and Composition 28 October 2017 The Folly and Dual Identities of the Victorian Society Stephen Colbert states, "Status is always ripe for satire; status is always good for comedy." The timeless message of the social elite's obsession with their self–imposed high statuses is the target of Oscar Wilde's satirical play, The Importance of Being Earnest. Wilde defaces the reputations elites upheld in the Victorian era and outlines the deviant display of Victorian manners as hypocritical. The quick–witted dialogue of his characters incites comedy which masks the underlying criticism of the Victorian way of life. Oscar Wilde's masterful use of satire, the neologism Bunbury, and mockery of the Victorian society establish the theme of duality embedded throughout the play, The Importance of Being Earnest. Satire is applied to highlight the folly embedded in Victorian logic, demonstrated by their manner of addressing important matters with triviality. Lady Bracknell, a Victorian social elite condemns Algernon's neologism Bunbury's history of terminal illnesses, an unexpected approach to the situation considering the uncontrollable nature of illnesses. Lady Bracknell advised, "...it is high time that Mr. Bunbury made up his mind whether he was going to live or die. This shilly–shallying with the question is absurd" (Wilde 9). The folly of the Victorian elite is apparent in the manner with which Lady Bracknell demeans the seriousness of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Brilliant Folly: the Role of Feste In William Shakespeare 's comedy Twelfth Night, it is ironic how many times the fool is said to be dishonest, when, in fact, his role proves entirely opposite. Though sometimes the characters do not realize his hidden messages, the reader can instantly comprehend Feste 's figurative language, which is evident in every scene in which the fool appears. Whether he is singing to Orsino, arguing with Malvolio, or playing around with Viola, Feste always manages to sneak in a few symbolic foretokens before his exit. His keen eye and fast wit help him to actively partake in the portrayal of the story, however, the fool is merely present to express that which cannot be fully expressed through the lines of other characters. Through his songs, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Feste 's common, witty remarks show the reader many significant truths about life in Illyria, and she can also apply them to her own experiences. Feste 's quick ability to play on the words of others also helps him illustrate his views on many subjects. After Olivia commands the fool be taken away because he is dry, meaning not amusing, Feste slyly twists her words with a good pun. "For give the dry fool drink, then is / the Fool not dry" (1.5.41–42). His artfulness amuses Olivia, and the fool is allowed to stay. Also, while they are speaking to each other, Feste and Viola hold a conversation consisting entirely of wordplay. "Viola: Save the, friend, and thy music. Dost thou live by the tabor? Fool: No, sir, I live by the church. Viola: Art thou a churchman? Fool: No such matter, sir. I do live by the church, for I do live at my house, and my house doth stand by the church" (3.1.1–7). Here, the fool 's words help Viola realize how important diction is, and also how deceiving it can be. This awareness helps her to choose her words more carefully from that point on. Though his reasons for using puns vary each time, their collective message is best summed up by Feste himself when he states, "A sentence is/ but a chevril glove to a good wit. How quickly the/ wrong side may be turned outward" (3.1.11–13). Through Feste 's clever use of language, he takes on a role separate from his character. Although he partakes in

  • 12. Romeo And Juliet Folly Quotes Romeo and Juliet: Victims of Feud All teenagers have stupid ideas, especially in the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. In the play, two star crossed lovers meet, but there is a long standing family feud between the two. Romeo and Juliet eventually meet and fall in love despite the families hating each other. Fate and folly are major contributing factors, but it is feud that is most to blame for the star crossed lovers death. First and foremost, the lovers Romeo and Juliet seemed destined from the very beginning to a sad fate. For example, in the play's Prologue, the two are described as "Star–crossed lovers" (prologue.6), which implies that the two lovers are doomed. While the two lovers have still yet to meet, they plan to attend the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning of the play it come clear that the two "Star–Crossed lovers" are from two conflicting families. For instance the prologue states Two households, both alike in dignity (In fair Verona, where we lay our scene), From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. (Prologue.1–4). This explains to us that the two families (The Montagues and Capulets) are of the same social standing, and are in a uncivil family feud. Later in the story after Romeo and Juliet have already met, Juliet cries out "O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name, or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and I'll no longer be a Capulet." (2.2.36–39) Juliet is willing to give up her family name to be with her love Romeo. After Romeo kills Tybalt, cousin of juliet, Juliet first takes the side of her family and rejects Romeo, but later taking his side. Juliet expresses her feelings by saying "Shall I speak ill of him that is my husband? Ah, poor my lord, what tongue shall smooth thy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Folly of Rewarding a While Hoping for B Kerr's observation on "The folly of rewarding A while hoping for B is true today, simply illustrates the sometimes fouled up rewards systems that most companies have in place. Fouled up in the sense that most companies wrongly reward not so positive behaviours while hoping and expecting for better ones. Kushell, E., Michael A, Heide D and Bosserman N, in their article explain that "Kerr's words help explain today's disappointing competitive results." They further explain that most organisations continue to reward less productive behaviour, using the example of getting a job done being more important that how the job gets done at the expense of long term gains in productivity. In his article, "The folly of rewarding A while hoping for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In my organization, performance is measured by different parameters for different departments. The performance of the sales department team is measured by the number of sales made and the amount of revenue generated. For cabin crew members, performance is weighed through a number of ways and primarily through frequent on–board appraisals. These appraisals are often conducted by senior cabin crew members and are measured against certain standard factors such as interaction with passengers and colleagues and general activities carried out on the flight. This appraisal system applies to all cabin crew members, however seniors in the company have an additional way through which they are appraised where junior cabin crew members have the equal opportunity to rate their seniors as well making the performance evaluation processes two– way. Another way performance is measured is through attendance. Points are deducted for absenteeism and lateness and anyone with a good track record of attendance is considered a good performer. Good performance is rewarded through timely job promotions, special recognition and in some cases monetary rewards and incentives. Is this system of appraisal effective? Not always. Could this be strategically improved? Definitely. The major downside of this appraisal system is that it is often generic, routine and repetitive. For example, the appraisal forms used to rate performance has remained unchanged for over a decade such that the appraised ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. The Bible Is Full Of Wisdom And Folly The Bible is full of wisdom and folly. This essay will evaluate the concepts of diligent people in Hebrew wisdom being wise, while the lazy person is a fool. The major part of the essay will concentrate in Proverbs, but we will review some scriptures from Ecclesiastes. Proverbs was written by Solomon, and he wrote it out of concern for his children. Ecclesiastes is said to have been written by Solomon, but this is not certain. Both books can be used by all for guidance, regardless of their age. Proverbs in general concentrates on moral virtues, and the opposite, their vices. The main theme of the book is the fear of the Lord, as it is seen fourteen times in Proverbs. Ecclesiastes main theme is life without God is empty, pointlessness and without meaning. There are a lot of contrasting chapters and verses comparing the differences between being wise and foolish, the wicked and righteous and the lazy and hardworking. Both books mainly concentrate on the contrasts between evil and good and foolishness and wisdom. So, let's look at some verses and relate the concepts, describe and compare them to being diligent (wise) or laziness (foolish). • 18. Analysis Of Venus Cupid Folly And Time Also known by the titles "Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time" and "A Triumph of Venus", this painting was on purpose designed as a complex, erotic allegory that includes an extent of iconographic symbols from the ancient world of mythology. It was a present from Cosimo de Medici to King Francis I of France. Being rich and vivid in symbolism relating to the constituting ideas of the High Renaissance, the painting gives Bronzino the opportunity to establish his maestro figure painting and portrait art. Through personification of qualities and varying contrast and brightness, Bronzino is able to justify that personal gains outweigh anything and everything that is moral. The picture symbolizes the aftermath of incestuous actions. Venus is evidently present at the center of the painting, recognizable by the golden apple in her left hand from the Greek myth The Judgement of Paris. A robust adolescent male figure with wings can be seen entwined with her. It is her son, Cupid. The undeniable sexuality of their embrace has long been debated over as scandalous behavior. Rather than channeling the act of incest in itself, Bronzino exploits these two as symbols for the personification of male and female sexuality. Whichever case it may be, the erotic narrative of the painting becomes instantly clear. Venus, determined to get Cupid's arrow submits to dire endeavors when Cupid refuses and tries to distract him by seducing him while she takes the arrow from him. Venus and Cupid are painted ... • 20. Erasmus And The Praise Of Folly During the Renaissance of the sixteenth century, Europe experienced a golden age of new works of art, literature, and advancement in medicine. However, as these advancements spread across the European nation–states, the order of the Protestant Reformation began to rise. Christian humanists and middle–class patrons opposed the religious mores, creating unorthodox standpoints of the European Christendom. Likewise, in Erasmus' The Praise of Folly, the allegorical figure, Dame Folly, criticizes the follies of influential groups and individuals of the sixteenth century. Rather than creating a written work that agrees with the conventional views and methods of the period, Erasmus takes a modern approach instead. Erasmus uses a peculiar technique ... In addition, the feedback is delivered in a calm and courteous tone. This combination would prevent those that are receiving the feedback from feeling embarrassed or uneasy. However, Erasmus does the opposite, through which he bluntly attacks groups that are highly influential during the Renaissance period: doctors, lawyers, artists, scientists, and theologians. Dame Folly appoints them as having "the greatest affinity with folly" (lines 29–30). More specifically, medicine is more rhetoric than true, artists are merely complacent, and those in the religious community do not deserve "the religious" and "monks" titles. In addition, although Erasmus specifically addresses these disciplines, his discernments also expose the follies of all human beings. However, it is easier to use the titles of those of higher status, for it receives more attention. Essentially, it is a bold decision to stand out against those that make up what is the Renaissance or what has become socially accepted. Similar to the function of satire, attacking higher individuals creates a controversial quarrel. Furthermore, modern works usually result in these quarrels and unexpected reactions, for the audience are not accustomed to what they are viewing. Folly is the act of having the knowledge of the benefits of making a good choice, but rather choosing the wrong or foolish decision. Diligence is the act of being aware of something. Therefore, one who often postpones activities and comes up with excuses is lazy (Hindson & Yates, 2012). The Hebrew wisdom books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Songs of Songs, and Psalms covers teachings on diligence, folly, wisdom, and laziness. • 38. Autobiography Of The Vaudeville Era The Vaudeville Era was an incredibly influential time for American musical theatre. It's existence gave rise to several performers from classic vaudeville acts to Ziegfeld Follies performers, and burlesque dancers. From (and contributing to) it's death sprang popular new mediums of performance and entertainment (Revue, Radio, Talkies, and Burlesque). There is little surprise that nostalgia for vaudeville began closely after its "death" and continues to influence many forms of American entertainment today. "Gypsy" is story about a family vaudeville–centered act trying to make it in a time when vaudeville was dying out. The story contains content about vaudeville and burlesque as it is a biography of the famous burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee. "Gypsy" followed Gypsy Rose Lee from vaudeville to burlesque. Burlesque was synonymous with stripping at this time and is partially credited with "killing" vaudeville. In the movie "Gypsy", the narrator and mother of Miss Gypsy Rose Lee made a comment about how "washed up vaudeville acts go to burlesque". because the narration was done from the point of view of Gypsy's mother, the vernacular included early to mid 1900's slang such as "the big time" (best vaudeville circuit / Orpheum Circuit) and "banana oil" (a ridiculous or wrong statement). He chose Folly to carry his message because "truth has a genuine power to please if it manages not to give offence, but this is something the gods have granted only to fools" (57). He does not single out specific individuals or limit himself to specific groups of people; he includes almost everybody. • 46. Theme Of Folly In Romance Of The Rose In the French poem, the Romance of the Rose, Lady Reason states "Happy is the man who learns from his folly," (De Lorris and De Meun, 46). Lady Reason's statement is true for the Lover in the Romance of the Rose. Folly are the mistakes caused by one's foolishness; in this case, the Lover's folly is his impatience with the rose. Happiness is when a man succeeds in attaining his desire; in which the Lover does so by obtaining the rose in a chivalry manner. Therefore, through chivalry, courtesy, and love, the Lover was able to be happy by learning from his folly. Moreover, this is significant because this shows the audience, specifically men, on how to love and how to display courtly behavior. The Lover's folly, or mistakes caused by his ... Thus, this shows that by learning from his folly or his act of impatience, the Lover was able to achieve happiness in the end because he learned proper chivalry. The teaching of chivalry in the Romance of the Rose is significant because it is as if the God of Love, or better yet the narrators, are teaching men on how to display chivalry behavior, which is important in a new courtly world. Thus, this also displayed that chivalry can now be learned. Another quality that the Lover learns from his folly, in order to attain happiness, is courtesy, or the inside behavior between men and women. Along with chivalry, the Lover also learns ways to be courteous. As his teacher, the God of Love tells the Lover "be courteous and approachable, speaking gently and reasonably to high and low alike," (32). • 48. God Bless America by Irving Berlin "God Bless America" is one of Irving Berlin's best known songs. We hear it at ceremonies, at sporting events, all over across the United States. It was originally composed by Berlin in 1918 while he was serving in the U.S. Army. He set the song aside for a while and didn't pick it back up until he later revised the piece in 1938. The most famous version of this song was recorded by Kate Smith. It is even considered her signature song. The songs genre is considered to be an American patriotic song. He received criticism at first, especially from Anti–Semitic groups because Berlin was Russian born and Jewish. However, the song gained quick popularity and was even used by Roosevelt as his official campaign song. The song is often played at sporting events and was sung as a tribute by Celine Dion after the terrorist attacks of September 11th. "God Bless America" was originally written for a full orchestra and was first performed that way by Kate Smith with a choir singing backup vocals as well. The piece is written in the key of F major and is in cut time. The tempo is set at moderato, however, in Kate's original performance many liberties were taken in terms of tempo. Berlin, drafted by the Army during World War I to write songs of patriotism, wrote the song but decided it was not fitting for the "Yip Yip Yaphank" series that he was doing. In Praise of Folly In Praise of Folly – Erasmus' Dichotomy The Silenus box is a "case carved like an ugly Silenus" that can be "opened to reveal beautiful, precious objects" (Erasmus 43, footnote). This box appears in Erasmus' Praise of Folly as a metaphor for the central claim in the novel, which is that that which appears to be Folly (ugly) externally, is wise (precious) within. Erasmus reveals this dichotomy on three levels: in the image of the box itself, in his genuine praise of Folly, and in the structure of the novel as a whole. To do this, she abruptly inserts the word "conversely" (43), and continues with a long backward list. "Life will turn out to be death; beauty will become ugliness," and so on, she says (43). In this backwards list, good outsides cloak bad insides. She then uses this inverted list as a springboard to celebrate wise appearances (although this is the exact opposite of the central message of the book, which is the celebration of foolish appearances). • 56. Letter: The Follies Of Paganism And Judaism The letter opens with two sections addressing the follies of both Paganism and Judaism. It discusses their outrageous customs and rites, and he does not continue in depth or spend time discussing further because, "if the above considerations are not enough for anybody, I [he] see[s] no point in pursuing the subject any further." He concludes both by boasting of Christian superiority in juxtaposition of these two absurd religions. In this way, he refutes a large number of arguments against Christianity by declaring Christian rationality in apposition of the delusional religions. He then goes on to argue this sensible religion is sensible within the community and is even valuable to those around. He explains that Christians are good citizens. ... • 58. Dame Folly Demonstrates The Nature Of Choices Napoleon once said, "Nothing is more difficult, and therefore more precious, than to be able to decide. We all make choices every day, some more serious, and some less. Do I wear this shirt, or that one? Do I eat that slice of cake or no? Do I start a conversation with that student? Do I choose to obey God? The book of Proverbs highlights the vital nature of choices. In Proverbs 9, you see Lady Wisdom inviting whoever bypassers to join her for a feast. At the same time, however, Dame Folly is right there loudly persuading those same bypassers into her house – Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn her seven pillars. She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine; she has alos set her table. She has sent out her young women to call ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 60. Machiavellian Folly in The Prince Essay Machiavellian Folly in The Prince In the annals of history, many individuals have contributed great works of literature, waxing philosophically on the meaning of life, death, and love. Niccolo Machiavelli wrote not on love or life, but on power: How to capture it, how to consolidate it, and how to defend it against all comers. His work has been talked about and dissected to the extent that his subject matter and methods have earned their own moniker: Machiavellian. Nonetheless, this great philosopher's works did not meet with unanimous approval. His own student, Thomas Hobbes, presented a very different account of politics. This essay offers a Hobbesian critique of some of Machiavelli's arguments, focusing in and around ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 2 Humans, according to Machiavelli, are not the morally grounded beings the Bible espouses them to be. He writes in The Prince: "For one can say this generally of men: that they are ungrateful, fickle, pretenders and dissemblers, evaders of danger, eager for gain.3" Clearly, Machiavelli argues that man is precarious – a being of dubious morals and selfish desires. Hobbes agreed with this analysis, and took it one step further. According to Hobbes, all mankind has a restless and perpetual desire for power, which "ceaseth only with death"4. Moreover, man can never be satisfied with the power he has. Hobbes writes: ... [man] cannot assure the power and the means to live well, which he hath present, without the acquisition of more [power]. Man's first need is to provide security for himself. Past experience and reason dictate that he will do this by any means necessary – even if it means killing everyone around him. Critics argue that Hobbes and Machiavelli are too pessimistic; but they would both beg to differ. To both Hobbes and Machiavelli, Aristotelian virtue is a deception; it can never be reached. Men do not want to be good; they want to lie, they want to cheat, and they want to kill. To expect otherwise would be contrary to their hostile nature. To both Hobbes and Machiavelli, political analysis must begin by identifying the human being for what he really is – a self–interested, self–seeking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Summary Of Water Follies By Robert Glennon Water Follies: Groundwater pumping and the fate of America's fresh waters was about how Groundwater pumping has destroyed the water surfaces in the United States. Robert Glennon, the author of the book, wrote this book in a way that the reader would admire his exhaustive obsession for detailed research, in order to provide the most information to the reader. Even though the author wrote this book for history lovers and water and hydrology enthusiasts, most readers can get through the book without having the thought that this book is not for them. The book did have a significant affect on me because in the second chapter " The Worth Of Water In in United States", Glennon used a quote by Herbert Hoover: "True conservation of water is not the ... • 64. Analysis Of Erasmus's Praise Of Folly In Erasmus's "Praise of Folly," Erasmus discusses how Folly is indebted into her wisdom. Folly, the daughter of Plutus and Youth, wants to inform all of the great gods that she can bring joy to everyone. She wanted to build an empire of her own, since there was not one built for her. Many of the gods during that time had the perception that many women did not know what they were talking about, and were seen as simple minded. However, Folly has the idea that people will not be able to create or form any relationship without her power. Since Folly believes that no one takes her serious, or any of her propositions, she wants to show everyone that life would not be the same without her. In a sense, Folly is giving herself credit so that everyone can value her even more. As she is talking about herself, she is giving everyone else the opportunity to see what kind of person she really is. Erasmus states that "I am the one – and indeed, the only one – whose divine powers can gladden the hearts of gods and men" (9). This quote explains the idea of Folly proving to everyone that life would not be the same without her. Words such "divine powers" and "gladden" can depict the idea that Folly is going to do whatever it takes to her point across to the gods and everyone else. As Erasmus explains that Folly is the cause of life for everyone, he also describes how she is the cause of human interactions. Humans bond so that they can form a connection with one another. Their struggle to claim the freedoms and equalities outlined in the constitution was a daunting task. The period of Reconstruction following the Civil War was scrapped and labelled a failure by Northerners and Southerners alike. Both parties clung to myths that African Americans had been irresponsible with the freedoms provided to them by the Emancipation Proclamation and the Amendments to the Constitutional. Despite common perceptions of black folly and Reconstruction failure, the era proved to be an invaluable period which laid the ground work for African American victories during the Civil Rights Movement. It is also a damned folly because he sold his soul to the Devil and that is not a good thing at all. I think that this play is kind of confusing as well. Faustus said that he could not take it anymore and so he decided to sell his soul to the Devil. I do not think that was good of him to do so. He also said that he would do anything to stay with the Devil. I think that he should have made a better decision when it came to his life. This play was to have specific things about certain things. • 70. Funny Girl Essay Many women have certainly proven that women can be funny by breaking into an entertainment forum that is still today seen as quite the "boys' club": women like, Lucille Ball, Phyllis Diller, Joan Rivers, Lily Tomlin, Whoopi Goldberg and plenty more. These women are comedians, the funny girls, but what does it mean to be a funny girl? Using history and the feminist theory, this paper will provide a perspective of what it really means to be that funny girl. So when did women become "funny"? I mean, I'm sure that they always have been but when exactly did they begin to be recognized for being that way? Female comedians have made large contributions to the feminist movement. During the 19th Century women were using humor in things that go ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With all the strong females within the Vaudeville Era they were still woman in theatre being stifled by the all male climate and were simply seen as sex objects to keep the men at the performance, or objected to being laughed at in a demeaning manner. Still around 1910 most women had found themselves with more free time. So, they began to look deeper into their own personal identities and found that they liked going the theatre. "More than forty percent of popular theatre audiences were made up of mostly women" (Fields). One can see how women like Sophie Tucker and Fanny Brice wanted to be a part of the "stage–struck–girl" movement (Fields). These Women were not meant to be underestimated. As Vaudeville evolved into musicals, so did the amount of powerful females commanding the spot light. Theatre brought on a great amount of funny women. One of the well known "funny girls" was Fanny Brice. She was a burlesque performer turned comic when Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. saw her potential. She had quite the unique way of using self–deprecation and stereotypes for laughs using caricature like acting. In an attempt to get serious roles she received plastic surgery to change her nose, "a characteristic that she felt most reflected her Jewish heritage and caricature acting" (Editors). • 72. The Folly Of Secularism By Jeffrey Stout The Muslim headscarf, or Hijab has been a matter of ongoing debate and controversy in the secular state that is France. Secularism does not exist in a vacuum in France it builds upon 'complicated emotional inheritance, specifically the negotiation between the religious and state secularism which appears to continually lead to an image of hostility being constructed for Islam, despite the promotion of universality that is allegedly key to the French Republic. This essay discusses the Hijab in France in regard to Jeffrey Stout's 'The Folly of Secularism' and is structured in three main parts. It looks at how Secularism is intensely debated and contested, the way in which event intellectual, political, social shifts are changing through analysing firstly the controversy itself, then laïcité. Secondly, through looking to different aspects of French secular society; law, media and education. and thirdly, as per Stouts framework, discusses how the topic takes us to the heart of the most pressing issues of today, Gender politics, French state personality/nationhood and the Islamophobia that is a result of all of these things. The headscarf affair was generated by multiple social anxieties, namely the preservation of laïcité. The headscarf Controversy in France illuminates the politics of secularity in the way that it reaches across all social and political aspects of secular society in France. Overall, this essay will argue that the politics of secularity are indistinguishable from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. Music Is A Universal Language "Music is a universal language" is such a cliché phrase. But there's some truth to it. You listen to an opera, most of the time is sung in a foreign language, you could not care much how little you understand the song because the music carries you through the piece. There has been studies that music can calm a person, makes them agitated, or even motivated. Other studies states that the music we listen to can tell what type of personality one person has. My musical preference, though all over the place at times, is mainly focused on theatrical show tunes. When choosing a song for this essay, I originally chose an aria from Bernstein's operetta, Candide, which was "Glitter and Be Gay." Though I love the music, it did not speak to me as it is comic operetta song. Ultimately, I chose something from Stephen Sondheim's catalogue, a song called "I'm Still Here" from the musical Follies. Though it isn't my favorite song of all time, it evokes the feeling of survivalism and a sense that you can weather through anything. The more I listen to this song over time, the more it gets more poignant. The song "I'm Still Here" came from the musical, Follies, written by Stephen Sondheim. Though it tells a story of two middle–aged couple, coming to the theater where they all first met and express regret of choices in their lives and their unhappiness with each other's spouses, many of the songs in the show, especially "I'm Still Here", are not consequential to the plot of the musical. ... • 76. Analysis Of The Sum Of Our Follies The Sum of Our Follies (2014) is a recent Malaysian fictional work written by Shih–Li Kow. It is a "regional" piece a addressing the most conspicuous "thrillers" of place's meaning and literary imagination. The story hinges upon several episodes in a small town called Lubok Sayong and other replaces. Furthermore, the plot includes a number of perennial actions which perpetuate the token of "proximity" shared by the lives of Lubok Sayong's inhabitants who reciprocate their visions in an agnate perspective on life. It is an inherent call for the common sense of human individuality in a collective "place" uniting different "ways of life." These people are the authentic human phenomenon in a fictional setting. In fact, the story depicts real life images, such as contemporary Malaysian peripheries; and challenged once again by socio–cultural apathy, the specter of the story's fictional "pluralism" and the affectionate buoyancy of Shih–Li Kow who "seems particularly instructive" (Cross, 2006: 49). The novel tells the story of a middle–aged man called Auyong, or the narrator, and an orphan girl Mary Anne. Within each section a person or group of people are rebelling against the religious norm of their time. Erasmus, In Praise of Folly, Martin Luther, "The Ninety–five Theses," The Twelve Articles of the Peasants of Swabia, and The English Act of Supremacy, 1534 are all writings that exemplify this aspect. Within the time of the northern European Renaissance Erasmus of Rotterdam is considered the greatest scholar and humanist of its time. The tenth article asks for the meadows and fields that are owned by individuals be arranged so that the community can use them. The twelfth article is their conclusion and it basically says that if any of the article are prove not to be of God's will or unjust they will adjust them to do so.
