Sexism In Ah Q
In Chinese culture, the Confucian attitude towards society seemed to prevail. Women lacked a voice,
education was bereft of importance, and writing lacked substance. However, Lu Xun, one of the
most prominent writers during the May Fourth movement, was a leading figure in helping shed the
image of Confucian literature. His satirical style brought to light some of the major issues occurring
in Chinese culture including the common attitude towards scholars, the sexist society as well as the
everlasting belief that superstition and fortune were important. In "Kong Yiji," Lu Xun chronicles
the troubled times of a scholar, and despite his intellect becomes mocked by the villagers and
ultimately is cast off. Lu Xun explores the gender inequality in his short story "Ah Q," with the main
character being attacked for disrespecting women. "Medicine" is inundated with many traditional
Chinese superstitions, yet each superstition has an ironic outcome as nothing goes to plan.
Moreover, Lu Xun's parodies not only created a more realistic perspective of modern beliefs, but his
parodies completely reject the traditional Confucian beliefs, paving the way for new Chinese voices.
In Lu Xun's short story, "The True Story of Ah Q," Ah Q's sexist tendencies flood the text. Lu Xun
pokes fun at the pettiness of Ah Q's life when he declares one of his victories his victimization of a
nun. Trying to impress men, Ah Q "pinched her hard again before letting her go" (Lu Xun, ). In fact,
Ah Q took

Qin And Han Dynasty
Qin and Han Historical Research Paper China has had many dynasties, but there are two which
stand out; which, are the Qin and the Han. Ancient China has had one of the oldest and longest
civilizations in the history of the world. Throughout China's history, China was ruled by powerful
families called dynasties. Because of Qin and Han significance and impact on China, both dynasties
sites are influential to Chinese history, but the Han dynasty had a greater impact on the history of
China due to their significant rise to power, impact, and their influence to Chinese history. The Qin

He ordered the creation of common weights and measures, an improved system of writing and a law
code. Shi Huangdi also tried to control the thoughts of his people by outlawing the ideas of
Confucius and other important thing and instead required people to learn the philosophy of Qin
scholars. The period of the Han Dynasty was a time of invention and science. The Han paper, iron
casting, crop rotation, acupuncture as well as improvements in medicine, mathematics, building,
agriculture, engineering, porcelain, and astronomy. During the Han's rule that contact with the West
through the Silk Road was first established, which enabled trade. Both dynasty's left China with a
rich culture, many new laws, practices, and inventions, which made China very prosperous.
Han dynasty was the most influential in Chinese history. First of all the Han lasted much longer than
the fiveteen year of Qin rule. Instead of fighting they made many inventions listed above and other
advances to help China become stronger and prosperous country. The contribution to the Silk road
also helped China because of all the trade they began to do. The paper invention influenced
literature that someone named Sima Qian created the first Chinese history book. In astronomy they
recorded the first record of the solar system. They were also less cruel than the Qin dynasty but yet
they were still power. All their inventions and all there practices and ways of doing things makes the

The Great Helmsman 's ' Mr. Big ' A New Play About Lu Xun...
A giant statue overlooking the stage, faceless yet easily recognizable as the Great Helmsman, scenes
that resemble a Cultural Revolution–era public persecution – many aspects of "Mr. Big," a new play
about Lu Xun (1881–1936), modern China's most famous writer, carry political undertones, and it's
not to everyone's liking.
"Mr. Big" opens with Lu Xun's soul heading to heaven after his death. Using imagery from the
Cultural Revolution, heaven slowly turns into hell, and at the end of the play two revolutionary
guards stand in front of Lu's dead body, talking about how thin he looks.
"Mr. Big" recently completed its four–day debut, from from March 31 to April 3, in at the National
Theatre Company of China, and caused enthusiastic compliments as well as fierce criticism in
Beijing.
"Mr. Big" is about Lu Xun (1881–1936), widely recognized as the most important litterateur, and
one of the most influential figures in Chinese modern history. After the 1919 May Fourth
Movement, of which he was one of the leaders, Lu Xun began to exert a substantial influence on
Chinese literature and culture. His best–known works, ""Call to Arms" (1922) and "Wandering"
(1925), show the extraordinary gift of treading a fine line between criticizing the follies of his
characters and sympathizing with those very follies.

The Physical State Of Being Alive Worth It?
Jingyan said, "I wonder why there aren 't more people like you in the world." "I am nothing special,"
said Yuan. "I just think: if losing your soul is only the way to survive, is the physical state of being
alive worth it?" "You 've seen too much for your age," said Jingyan. Jingyan turned to Yuan,
catching how the young man was chewing on the inside of his cheeks and lips again. From the
moment Yuan slipped and sent that tile to the ground earlier tonight, Jingyan thought the young man
was unreasonably distracted. "Did something happen today?" Yuan said, "Princess Kara–Shutai
killed my father and committed suicide." Jingyan 's eyes snapped to Yuan 's face. "My mother was
the Chief of the White Shadow Sect," said Yuan. "When she realized my father wanted to marry
Princess Kara–Shutai, she stopped taking her medicine. They were married a day before she passed
away and I vowed to become everything my father didn 't want me to be." "Once Xia Jiang is
released from his house arrested, he will kill many, many people," said Yuan. "I don 't think I will
survive that bloodbath." "Don 't say things like that," said Jingyan. Deep inside, he knew Xia Jiang
was a man of impulse. He 'd been humiliated today and his wrath would descend on anything he
could access, in the most violent and bloody way possible. Jingyan 's guess of how many people Xia
Jiang would slaughter in vengeance was staggering. "Sorry," said Yuan. "I should not burden you

Ah Q Imperialism
In his novel "The True Story of Ah Q ," Lu Xun (1921) mainly describes a tragic man called Ah Q, a
homeless man who is always doing different part–time jobs living a remote village called
Weichuang in early 20th century China. Lu Xun(1881–1936), whose real name is Zhou Shuren is a
famous modern litterateur and thinker. When he was young, he went Japan to study medicine to save
the patient during the war time. During his study in China, he realized that to be a doctor just can
cure people, however, cannot save the people from the pain of the life. Therefore, he gave up his
medical study and became a writer to use his articles to arouse Chinese to protect their country, and

national nature of Chinese people.
The novel and the actually history showed a series of realistic issues at that time. Firstly, early 20th
century's China was under the oppression of imperialism, and people were lived in a tough
environment. Secondly, people's ignorance rooted in his lack of education. If people generally had
been educated, the idea of revolution would be much easier and quicker to spread. Thirdly, the
failures of the revolution not only because of board masses, even some of the revolutionaries were
hollow hearted, or did not understand the significance of revolution.

Qin Shi Huangdi, The First Qin Essay
Qin Shi Huangdi, the first Qin emperor, was an ambitious emperor who implemented a central
bureaucratic system that oversaw the evolution and unification of China at the cost of public
sentiment. The Qin Dynasty is considered to be among the most influential dynasties as it laid the
foundation for the massive cultural and economic development of China that took place during the
Han Dynasty, but it also failed to achieve many of its pro–commoner ideological goals. In fact,
socioeconomic disparity was not alleviated and despite the notion of enriching the lives of the
common people, it was under Qin rule in which public resentment of the authoritarian government
peaked as there were countless peasant revolts against the iron–handed bureaucratic rule of the Qin.
Because a paranoid emperor alone wielded political clout and influence, the tumultuous few years of
Qin reign was rife with paranoia and suspicion among the masses. Although the Qin Dynasty is
seldom thought to possess the same glaring discrepancy between ideology and state that the
Communist regime in post–World War II China had, the failure of the flawless egalitarian state
models in socioeconomic and political aspects during the Qin Dynasty mirrored the developments in
early Communist China. Among the key aspects of the Qin unification was the act of completely
clearing all local aristocracies and uniting the peasant class into a single, mobilized workforce.
Ideally, the Qin bureaucracy sought to empower the

Personal Narrative: Why I Have My Own Ruling Land Or Utopia
Have you ever thought of an idea to have your own ruling land or an utopia? Well I have finally
been able to do that, with a few requirements, but none the less I have been able to do it. Honestly it
looks a lot harder than I think it will be but I am excited to see where this takes me. I have my own
place of ruling but then I have used information from other primary documents on how to improve it
as well and I am hoping that the improvements are good ideas and not ones that will hurt my land. I
had to improve on things like the environment that I was controlling, also how to make and
distribute wealth amongst the land. How to have a class structure was it through killing people or
taking land. Also had to use ways from Rome to convince people ... Show more content on

We need to take ideas from others to protect our own. These improvements with show our enemies
that we are not leaving and also our loyal citizens that we are staying here for a very long time. With
our geography I think we should follow the romans and make aqua ducts in order to bring water to
our village. For the making and distributing of money I think the best would be to follow the Qin
dynasty (through labor). The believed once a man was sixteen/seventeen and was five feet they
should fulfill labor obligations (Reilly,129). Also to show class structure the Qin Dynasty is the best
to follow because people who didn't obey were killed (Reilly,139). We also need to convince people
to come to our side which is we follow Rome's idea of aqua ducts which gives easy access to water,
people will come. The Qin Dynasty had the equality of man down to the better which would make
everybody happy. If you were a sixteen to seventeen male of five feet in height you had military
service, ful fill his labor obligations, and pay taxes on land (Reilly, 129). I think these are important
keys to have a powerful structure and make people come to our side. I would use the hard/soft
coercion of Rome. The hard coercion of Rome was military. Marcus Aurelius would exterminate an
entire group of enemy people (Reilly, 159). Now the soft coercion is the Emperor Marcus liked to

The Representation Of The Society Through Art
Chinese Literature Student Name Institution Affiliation Chinese Literature Throughout the human
revolution, the representation of the society through art has been a common phenomenon. On the
advent of literary skills of writing, people could represent their world better than before. However,
the artists were only allowed to present the social ideas in the acceptable or the classical ways.
Unfortunately, this traditional method of conveying knowledge or ideas was limited and somehow
unrealistic of what was truly happening in the community. The language had to be polished and
altered to fit the social standards. Nevertheless, as the traditional forms of leadership shifted slowly

The diary is meant to brief the visiting friend on the man 's behavior and thoughts while suffering
from the psychiatric disorder. Interestingly, Xun starts this story by using classical writing when
introducing the sane friend but totally switches to vernacular when writing the content of the
madman. The vernacular use enables the author to speak of the society as it is, using the very words
that are employed in the society. Therefore, this makes his work more realistic. Furthermore, the
themes that the author employs are authentic as well. Through realism writing movement, Xun
criticizes the four thousand years old feudal Chinese system which has perpetuated human
cannibalism. Through an insane man, the author exposes the real tribulations that everyday people
go through and have come to perceive it as part and parcel of their lives. Also, Xun uses
characterization to bring out the issues that would be considered uncomfortable in such governance.
Therefore, the madman character, who has the social freedom to say anything and is more likely to
be ignored, enables Xun to agonize the feudal system injustices. Apart from characterization, Xun
employs symbolism and hyperbole in his work. In A Madman 's Diary, the author uses cannibalism
to symbolize the feudal Chinese system, which for thousands of years has enabled the wealthy to
further benefit off the poor. As a result, the gap between the poor and the rich would never be
bridged. Through the diarist, it is

his fists against the slimy stone walls until his skin began to scrape off, each strike more urgent than

petrified him on a whole new level. Jingyan tried to lift his arms, but his body wouldn't move now.

narrowed at Mei Changsu, "Along with your men." The set up wasn't fair. With superior martial art

Jingyan's mind, Mei Changsu said, "Your soldiers will die fighting against Hua one last time, in
exchange for their prince's safety and North Qi's successful invasion." "You plan to take me away,"

those worn by peasants on the city street. The neckline of a tunic was visible over what Jingyan
presumed to be a pair of pants, tied together with a simple cloth belt. Mei Changsu nodded at

The True Story Of Ah Q

"is a literary genre that takes place in the past. The setting is drawn from history." The historical
events and social phenomena will be presented in the story though it is a historical fiction. It can
impress deeply historical frames in people's mind and plays a significant role in history. It is another
way to record history. Additionally, the author, "Lu Xun (1881–1936) is widely regarded as one of
modern China's most prominent and influential writers." Lu Xun has enough patriotism. He
advocated "literary movement". "He concluded that a "literary movement" was needed to build

He had no regular work either, simply doing odd jobs for others." The author states that the
wandering peasants' degree was humble. Due to peasants were oppressed by bourgeoisie, they led to
a miserable life in that time. However, he was arrogant and conceit. "Ah Q had a very high opinion
of himself. He looked down on all the inhabitants of Weichuang, thinking even the two young
"scholars" not worth a smile, though most young scholars were likely to pass the official
examinations." Furthermore, the book portrayed the personality and behavior of Ah Q. "winning a
psychological victory" was obvious character for Ah Q. For instance, "Ah Q, this is not a son
beating his father, it is a man beating a beast. Let's hear you say it: A man bearing a beast!" Though
this method, Ah Q can decrease the external pressure, but the result is that he escapes from reality.
In that era, Ah Q's character and his "winner a psychological victory" have a broad representation,
not only the behaviors of Ah Q are ridiculers, but also reflect the national character. In sum, there
are lots of people the same as Ah Q, who are ignorant, idle and complaining. These people are
pathetic and sad.
Secondly, after the opium wars, China became semi–colony in the world. Internal and external
world also have big problems. Although Chinese peasants had the Revolution, they still suffered

Lu Xun describes Ah Q's failed attempt at joining the revolution the reasoning why the real
revolution had failed. Ah Q's lack of knowledge did not allow him to be a revolutionary. His first
perception of the revolution brought him fear. Although then he realized that the revolution may be a
great thing (Lu). Despite this fact, he thought it was a great thing for the wrong reasons.
"'Revolution is not a bad thing,' thought Ah Q. 'Finish off the whole lot of them . . . curse them! . . . I
would like to go over to the revolutionaries myself'" (Lu, 1, Chapter 7). Lu describes how Ah Q's
motives to join the revolution are incorrect. Ah Q, being and arrogant Chinese citizen, wants to join
the revolution so that he can be greater than the people he takes over. Lu believes that the call for
revolution should be because of national pride and the belief that China can be great again. The
author also alludes the idea of Democracy. He alludes to the fact that democracy cannot be only
promoted by solely the lower class. The reader discovers that people that are not patriating in
government or do not have high family status have no say in whether or not the politics should be
altered (Lu). Ah Q's attempt to join the revolution is something that proves this. Despite Ah Q's poor
reasoning for joining the revolution, he did intend to help the change that would have occurred in

Diary Of A Madman, Ah Q, And An Unimportant Affair
Lu Xun often makes a point to include the underlying cruelty found in Chinese culture within his
stories. Using characters from Diary of a Madman, Ah Q, and an Unimportant Affair, I will explain
why this topic stood out to me the most. In Diary of a Madman, the main character is a madman
who writes about his delusions and lives with his older brother. Ah Q follows a man who is deemed
simply as Ah Q. It describes his hardships, which are brought on by the cruelty of the society, as
well as by his own doings. Lastly, in An Unimportant Affair the main character witnesses an event
that changes his outlook on life and the society around him and makes him contemplate his motives.
In Diary of a Madman, the main character has been locked in a room in his older brother's home. At
one point, he claims he hasn't seen the moon in thirty years. He begins by telling us he fears the
neighbor, Old Zhao and his dog, as well as the children of his village. ... Show more content on

himself and the children who have already learned that cruelty and those that have not. He wants to
see the world change and become a better place where everyone is safe and protect each other from
being "eaten". Ah Q demonstrates the distaste every culture has for the homeless and undesirable
people in the societies. He is looked down upon and beaten, sometimes just for existing. The people
around him see his as less than human, and equate him to animals, while he himself calls himself a

Joy Luck Club Strengths And Weaknesses
"Two Kinds" Strengths, Weaknesses, and More...
After exploring the contradictions in the lives of the Joy Luck Club such as, strength and
weaknesses, obedience and independence, individuality and society, joy and sadness, and hope and
despair. It really got me thinking about my strengths and weaknesses as a person (and where they
came from). Obviously, people's strengths and weaknesses are subjective so during the course of this
writing session I will either use my own personal opinion of what my strengths and weaknesses are.
Or I will state who said what my strengths and weaknesses are.
When thinking about about my strengths and weaknesses I asked my friend Harrison for help, he
thinks that I am fairly intelligent. On the downside he says that I give myself too much credit,
meaning I got a big ego. Harrison also claims that I have a short temper and always say the same
stuff sometimes. I think that my intelligence comes from my genetics, specifically from my dad, he
got a partial scholarship to Iowa for accounting. He majored in business to become a car salesman.
He is now the general manager of Carousel Motors in Iowa City and he pressures me to do good in
school. Along with my intelligence, he also brings me my short temper. My dad has always had a

the situation. This is the same with me, as usually I get very mad if someone either doesn't listen to

A Madman's Diary
Introduction "A Madman's Diary" is China 's first modern short story. The author Lu Xun has been
well respected and regarded as one of the most well–known political figures in China (Goldman

Unique narrative structure "A Madman's Diary" is very special in its narrative structure. Its setup is
very different from the traditional narration in that it avoids the use of classical Chinese.

There are several symbolic narrations in the story. The symbolism of the story is allegorical (Hanan
68). In the preface, Lu Xun uses an ironic technique by narrated in classical Chinese in order to
show a false and polite world made by cannibalistic feudal society. In the eyes of Lu Xun, the
madman is the hero who plays a better role in the society because only the madman knows the truth
and can rise in rebellion. The madman who is an innovative and reformed thought representative is a
symbol of oppressive man–eating nature of the feudal system. Even though he tries his best to rise in
rebellion, he fails every time. He is trapped in his own mind and can 't help considering that he 's in
the danger of being eaten. The madman could not understand the conspiracy of eating him, so he
was suspicious of everyone. When the madman recovers, he is not the hero anymore; also he joins
others to be one of man–eaters. Here, Lu Xun 's message is clear: The oppressed masses are eaters
or the accomplices (Sun L. 464). Only the madman could find the truth of the eaters. However, other
people including both the empowered and the oppressed fail to see the oppressive man–eating nature
of the feudal system. In addition, the story implies that the society is ruled by the feudal system, and
people of all the classes have to abide by the same feudal rules. Also, the story helps us

Sentimentalism In Ah Q
Early 20th Century Chinese Sentimentalities
The True Story of Ah Q, as written in 1921 by Lu Xun, is widely seen as a magnum opus of
contemporary Chinese literature. Xun wanted to alter the way of thinking as well as enlighten his
fellow Chinese following the 1911 Revolution that overturned the final Chinese dynasty. Xun uses
the protagonist of the story, Ah Q, as a representative of China as a whole as he saw the nation to be,
giving the reader an insight into social classes and attitudes that permeated Chinese society in the
early 20th century. Xun does not paint a great picture of Ah Q and unfortunately, this is his opinion
of Chinese society as a whole at the time. This portrayal of Chinese society is harsh and eye–
opening but to Xun, very accurate and necessary to transform the thinking of Chinese people at that
time. During the early half of the 20th century, China was a struggling nation. The country was
overwhelmingly controlled by foreign powers and had little to no autonomy. After losing the Opium
Wars to Britain and France, coupled with an attack from the Japanese, the Chinese had very little
control over China. These losses led to China also losing Control of the all–important coastal ports
that were very lucrative. The European influence permeated the Chinese country as people felt
helpless with their wishes and voices not being heard. Under such circumstances, one could easily
fall into a state of mind where they do not care. This is similar to the mindset and characteristics of
Ah Q. Ah Q was seen as backwards, aloof, careless, but with an air of arrogance that was delusional.
One common trait that comes from people feeling helpless is drug usage. People use drugs and
alcohol to help cope with whatever issues they are having; this is no different for Ah Q. In one
instance, the protagonist is seen drunk, cavorting around the village, apparently celebrating the fact
that one of the elite from the village had passed an examination given by the county. In his state of
drunkenness, Q proclaims that he has the same last name as the elite, and that they are related.
Ashamed and obviously upset with this false claim made by Q, the elite slapped and scolded Q and

The Morning After for Mokuba Kaiba
It is a beautiful Morning in domino city, the sun was shining and birds were singing. People were
making their way to work, chatting on cell phones with business calls, or chatting and gossiping
with friends. Teens and children were chatting with one another on the way to school. For Mokuba
Kaiba, it wasn't such a great morning. He was extremely nervous, because last night Serenity, Joey
Wheelers little sister, had given up her virginity to him. If Seto, his older brother found out he had
sex, he would kill him. As for Joey, he didn't know that Serenity was even dating. He would surely
kill Mokuba for taking his baby sisters virginity. Mokuba swallowed down his nervousness,
deciding to at least tell Joey he made love to his girlfriend. He quickly walked into Domino high
school, searching for his blond hot–headed friend. When he spotted him at the lockers, he
swallowed his nervousness and walked up to him. "Joey, Can I talk to you about something?" He
asked nervously. "Um sure squirt, what you want to talk about?" Joey obviously had been startled,
not expecting Mokuba to appear suddenly. "I do not want Seto to know" The raven haired teen
informed him. Hearing this, Joey became concerned. It made him think Mokuba had gotten himself

Analysis Of The Joy Luck Club
Whether it is wholesome or tough love, the bond of a mother and daughter can never be broken.
"The Joy Luck Club" is the epitome of this notion. The anthology contains a series of sixteen
vignettes, four of which belonging to one of each of the four members of The Joy Luck Club. These
vignettes cover the perspectives of mothers who immigrated to America from China, along with the
flip side point of view, taken over by each of their daughters. In the anthology, Tan reflects on her
past life and incorporates it into the book, exploring cultural, relationship, and internal conflicts.
The first chapter of "The Joy Luck Club" is named after one mother, Suyuan Woo. The reader is
introduced to Jing–Mei, her daughter, struggling to replace her mother in her spot at the mahjong
table, as she died two months prior. In 1949, Suyuan Woo and her husband, Canning, left for
America in effort for a better life–– two years before the birth of Jing–Mei. There, she joined a
Chinese baptist church where she met the other core members of The (rendition of) Joy Luck Club:
the Hsus, the Jongs, and the St. Clairs. Suyuan and Jing–Mei Woo, despite how well they get along,
run into many conflicts, mostly regarding their differences in culture. Suyuan grew up in China,
where she had gone through several complications and dire situations, which as a result forced her
to succumb to extreme sacrifices–– one of which being the abandonment of her own twins. On the

kind of stories. In stories like "A Small Incident" by Lu Xun, and "On the Oxcart" by Xiao Hong,
we can clearly notice that the authors are trying to give us a message within the anecdote. Lu Xun's
story, about an episode that changed his life, has a pretty direct message he wishes to portray to the

He was there to show Lu Xun how humane service can change a person's soul. He ends the story
telling us how this small incident keeps "teaching [him] shame, spurring [him] on to reform, and
imbuing [him] with fresh courage and fresh hope." In the story "On the Oxcart" Xiao Hong has a
young girl recount a conversation she heard while on the way to town. The two other people in the
cart with her were Sister Wuyun and the carter; all the while the girl pretended to sleep. Sister
Wuyun was telling the story of the moment they told her her husband was coming back from war
because he became a deserter. She went to the river wharf with her baby to greet him before he
received his punishment and a very peculiar and random event happened. While she was waiting for
the ship to arrive, Sister Wuyun had thoughts about leaving her baby behind and commit suicide.
She explained how at that moment she "felt like putting Little Baldy down on the riverbank and
jumping straight to the bottom [of the river]. Just leave that one little life behind; as soon as he
started crying, someone would surely come and take him away" (222). To do so she had to make
him sleep , but looking at the baby reminded her of her husband who had to arrive at any moment.
The second Sister Wuyun set her baby down a "sailing boat came around the riverbed, and when

Examples Of Confucianism In The True Story Of Ah Q
The late nineteenth century to the early twentieth was an important period for China, in which a
large number of reformers and revolutionaries, in the hope of changing the old China, struggled to
make China powerful and stable. The voice of abandoning Confucianism grew stronger and
stronger, which they contended that it was Confucian that hindered the development of Chinese. Just
take Lu Xun for example. He argued that Confucianism was the "man–eating manners", which gave
birth to those who just cared about themselves without any conscience of protecting their family.
Moreover, Lu Xun put forward that China should learn from the Western. Another example is Hu
Shi. He extremely called for the Modern Chinese language must be in the place of ... Show more

The prominent character of him was self–deceiving and self–important, which exactly reflected the
farmer's ideas at that time. He was not only the symbol of the poor proletarian but also a farmer
suppressed by authority. In addition, he did not have a name at all, and the only name he got was
deprived by Mr. Zhao.
The method that Ah Q most often used was spirit victory. That was kind of expression of self–
deceiving. For example, when he was beaten, he comforted himself by using" Son hit his father".
Moreover, while other people teased him that he was poor, he argued that my ancestors were richer
than yours. His characters, in essence, were devoid of self– awareness. He judged people with his
own standard, where anything that not conform to his standard would be wrong.
From this novel, Lu Xun seriously criticized the social reality at that time when people were self–
deceiving, who always took themselves as the center of the world. The attitude of Lu Xun toward
farmers was that on the one hand, he felt sympathetic to them. On the other hand, he hated that they
did not fight for themselves. With his sharp pen, he analyzed the reason why the farmers always lag
behind others, while showing sympathy to them. Meanwhile, he tempted to use his novel to warn
Chinese reformers, although May Fourth movement awakened a part of Chinese people like
students, most Chinese peasants were still ignorant and

Joy Luck Club Strengths And Weaknesses
"Two Kinds" Strengths, Weaknesses, and More... After exploring the contradictions in the lives of
the Joy Luck Club, such as strength and weaknesses, obedience and independence, individuality and
society, joy and sadness, and hope and despair. It really got me thinking about my strengths and
weaknesses as a person (and where they came from). Obviously, people's strengths and weaknesses
are subjective, so during the course of this writing session I will either use my own personal opinion
of what my strengths and weaknesses are or I will use my friends opinions on the subject. When
thinking about my strengths and weaknesses, I asked my friend Harrison for help. He thinks that I
am fairly intelligent, but that's about it. On the downside he says that I give myself too much credit,
meaning I have a big ego. Harrison also claims that I have a short temper and repeat myself at times.
I think that my intelligence comes from my genetics, specifically from my dad. He got a scholarship
to the University of Iowa in accounting. He majored in business and accounting to finally become a
car salesman. He is now the general manager of Carousel Motors in Iowa City, and he pressures me
to do good in school. Along with my intelligence, my short temper also comes from my dad. My dad
has always had a short fuse. Every time I did something wrong, he would either yell at me or be
visibly upset about the situation. This is the same with me, as I usually get very mad if someone
either doesn't listen to me or is acting very stupid in the given situation. Balancing short temper is
relatively simple and can be easily fixed by medication. On the other hand, having a big ego is
subjective to each and every person and that changes how people perceive me. Therefore it is
literally impossible to balance ego.
The same thing goes with people saying I am too loud. My Video Production teacher, Mrs. Saylor,
loves my loud voice because it helps get a clearer audio signal on the Liberty TV morning show. On
the other hand, if you were a classmate of mine that is across the room from me. You can see why
they would get annoyed if they could hear all my conversations because I am too loud. One non
arguable strength of mine is my physical strength. I

Influence Of Modern Western Government
Their political structure has influenced modern Western government. The Roman language, Latin, is
the root of many other languages like English, Spanish, and French.
The Roman Empire (cont.)
Formation – After the fall of the Qin Dynasty in 207 B.C., 18 separate political forces proclaimed
their independence, but the Han and Chu were the most powerful out of them. In 202 B.C., Liu
Bang won the Chu–Han Contention and found the Han dynasty, which ruled China for the next 400
years.
Cultural Traditions – Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism were introduced during this era.
Education became important as schools were built everywhere. Public school was started and
reserved for boys to learn new skills for free. Painting and calligraphy were now seen as forms of art
and not as ways of making signs and letters. The invention of paper made it easier for scholars to
record their ideas, thus leading to the boom in literature. Following the introduction of loom, silk
soon became an important part of the Han culture and economy

Abstract–In this letter, a mathematic proof and improvement of a classic result for multi–machine
systems modal analysis is given considering non–uniform damping and line resistance. An
analytical formula is derived for the estimation of electromechanical oscillation frequency. Matrix
theory based proof is conducted via determinant simplification and matrix triangularization. A half
size shrunken system matrix is obtained, which brings an extra benefit of faster eigenvalue solving.
The accuracy of the formula is validated against public available toolbox on two large power

The Qin were depicted as cruel, with the Han being moral, and following in the Confucian ideals;
though in reality the Qin and Han laws were similar in severity1. In the beginning of the Han
empire, there was significant compromise with the aristocratic groups who helped to overthrow the
Qin. Liu Bang handed out land grants to his military supporters as well as his relatives. The
bureaucracy of the Qin was adopted as the basis for the Han empire; it was highly centralized, and
all were affected. All males were required to register, pay taxes, and serve in the military. Former
regional princes were removed from power and rebellions were crushed, in their places regional

A Short Story : A Story?

her arms full of carrots, this was one too. "Psst. Xia. It's me," a voice hissed from inside the alley
behind her. "Yu?" Xia spun around into the alley and found herself face to face with her closest

radio silence. The day she disappeared, Xia had found a letter shoved under her bedside table, in
Yu's handwriting. It contained nothing but the words "I'm safe." Way to say goodbye to your best
friend before disappearing off the grid for four months, Xia thought. A million emotions swirled
through Xia as she looked up at Yu, relief, shock, anger, anger, anger. Yu looked like she always did,
dressed in jeans and a jacket despite the hot weather, with her dark hair pulled into a high bun and a
backpack slung over one shoulder. Xia wanted to hit her and hug her at the same time. "What are
you doing here?" she hissed. "Where have you been?" "I've been busy. Travelling, working a bit.

Confucius And The Ancient Rites And Moral Standard Were...
Confucius is an educator having over three thousand disciples, a statesman employed not only in his
own State but in several other, but most importantly, he is a ritualist who is a firm believer and
steadfast advocator of the Way, which has long been discarded by rulers in Confucius time. During
his time, the House of Chou had declined, the ancient rites and moral standard were forgotten, but
he had been striving to become a "superior person", a gentleman, in his whole life, and developed a
variety of moral philosophies that was cited and organized by his disciples into the book Analects
after Confucius's demise.
Confucius was born in Tsou, a small village in the State of Lu. He was later given the personal name
Chiu with courtesy name Chung–ni and the surname Kung. His father, Shuliang He, died soon after
Confucius's birth, and his mother refused to tell him his father's name nor where his father was

social relations in his childhood, thus developing his interest in performing rites. As a child,
Confucius liked to entertain himself with sacrificial vessels, using them to set out ceremony and

Why Is Aiesec Relevant For Queen 's University, Canada,...
GENERAL QUESTIONS
1. Why is AIESEC relevant to Queen's University, Canada, and the world? Queen's University is
located in a university town, Kingston. It has a distinct culture that allows everyone to feel
connected to one other. There is also a wide variation of the places students come from, even within
Canada – Vancouver to New Brunswick. Most of the students live far from home, often adjusting
oneself to the new environment. By this, Queen's students are already taking a step in becoming a
world citizen, making their AIESEC journey less challenging compared to other LCs.
Canada still have the prevalent issue about racism, gender equality, and more. However, the main
problem is that many think that those issues are not present in Canada. AIESEC can act as a
fundamental solution by bringing in TNs with iGT. As the numbers of TNs in Canada increase,
Canadians will be more aware of the issues that needs to be improved within the country.
The relevance of AIESEC to the world is based upon the number of EPs realized. AIESEC consists
of young leaders that take steps in creating the world a better place to live. This is done by following
the guideline of SDGs. Every EP on an AIESEC journey makes a contribution in trying to solve one
of the SDGs. From this, AIESEC hopes that the problems that are face currently would not be the
problems that are faced in 2030.
2. What does being a VP of AIESEC Queen's mean to you?
The VP of AIESEC Queen's should not be afraid to

A Madman's Diary By Lu Xun Analysis
Many authors use their work to express their thoughts about the flaws in the societies in which they
live. Lu Xun masks his criticisms of the once feudal society in China in his story, "A Madman's
Diary," by comparing the feudalistic society to cannibalism. The story begins with the narrator going
to visit two brothers. Upon arrival, the narrator learns that the younger of the two brothers has
recently been cured of madness, and moved away. The older sibling offers the narrator his brother's
diary for the narrator to read. After the narrator's explanation of how he got the madman's diary, the
rest of the story is composed of various entries from the diary the narrator was given. In the diary
entries, it is learned that the madman is very fearful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In "A Madman's Diary," the madman is the only one who is truly in touch with reality. He is the only
one who is seeing the true cannibalistic nature of the feudal system. The metaphor between
cannibalism and feudalism is meant to convey to the readers the flaws of the feudal system without
Lu Xun directly criticizing the system. Even though the madman is currently terrified of the society
he is living in, he shows hope for a better future. In the last diary entry, he ponders the possibility of
the nature of this society changing. He questions whether or not there are children who have not
consumed other people. He says that the children need to be saved from the nature of this society of
consuming other people to live. This represents Lu Xun's belief that the feudalistic society can
change if the ways of that society are not taught to the children and that he has hope for the future of
society. "...The narrator cultivates and maintains the courage to hope that the future for the children
of China will be separate from the past" (Laws 51). Lu Xun conveys a sense of hope for a better
future in China through the madman's hope in the story. The madman is the only one who is truly
aware of the problems of the society that they live in. Everyone else around him simply seems to
accept the ways of life. Metaphorically, this is representative of how "normal" people are blind to
the problems of the feudal system, and that it would take a madman to see the issues behind how
they are living. Lu Xun uses the madman's fear of cannibalism in society to convey to readers his
own fear of

Xia Dynasty History
The largest populated country in the world lies in China, which currently contains over 1 billion
people. China is popularly known for its martial arts, famous landmarks (ex: Great Wall, Terracotta

However, many people who haven't experienced this culture may not know much of its history and
its ways.
History of the Xia Dynasty: China's long history dates back to almost 5000 years ago and have a
written past of 3000 years. In the 21st century China's first dynasty the "Xia Dynasty" was the first
clan to set up a government and rule over China. The beginning of the Xia Dynasty started from the

Ming Tea Vs False Tea Essay
The aesthetic principle created by the Song tea drinkers and their appreciation of the original flavor
of water continued to the Ming Dynasty. Moreover, since loose tea, which tastes bitterer than both
Tang and Song styles of tea, was adopted by scholar–officials and people from other classes, the
original flavor/the sweet flavor of water was valued even more during the tea drinking in the late–

flavors of spices, were removed from the tea due to the popularity of loose tea consumption.
Timothy Brook has mentioned that the scholar–officials were the major practitioners of the Song

Literature In Chinese Literature
Chinese literature in the first half of the century was characterized by modernization and
westernization. Most writers warned to separate from classical Chinese. This included writers such
as Zhang Ailing, Lu Xun, and Xiao Hong. Not only did their education have an impact on their
beginnings as a writer, but as we can see through their novels, their childhood also have an affect on
their writings. Zhang Ailing, also known by her name Eileen Chang, was born into a wealthy family,
but she had a troubled childhood. Her father was addicted to opium and she left with her mother to
France, and did not return to China until later on. Her experiences in China were not happy, and
when she left, she no longer gave her tales a happy ending. When she went back to Hong Kong and
war had broken out, girls were portrayed as caring more about themselves than the actual dangers of
the war. One girl, Ailing describes panicking because she did not have enough wardrobe suitable for
the war. But it was not only her, it was almost everyone who had a psychological response with
some close association with clothing. Ailing gives the example of Sureika, who came from a remote
village on the Malay peninsula. She was unlike any other girl at school, she chose medicine instead
of the normal education and was seen as naive. After they were instructed to hide, when a bomb had
landed next to their dorm, Sureika sorted out her brightest clothes and went to serve as a nurse for

The Rise Of Power And Power
Throughout history many empires have risen and fallen, in both the ancient and new worlds. This
has caused philosophers and historians to ask why? Why do empires rise to great power, only to fall
later? Judging from historical evidence, ancient empires maintained dominance according to the
uses of political power and enforcement. If that power was neglected or misused, the kingdoms
almost inevitably fell. The Qin Empire, known for its belief in Legalism, was one of many empires
that did not last very long. Existing for about 15 years, the emperor used Legalistic policies to
enforce ideas that humans were stupid and problems–solutions, therefore, could only be found
through discipline and punishment. Such harsh practices, no doubt, served as a trial to the people
and severely hindered the Empire's ability to function properly. In order to function, empires must,
to one extent or another, have the consent of the people. Failing to do so could likely result in revolts
such as that of the Yellow Turbans, which occurred years later during the Han dynasty. The Qin
Empire only stood briefly due to its lack of stable political policies to satisfy the needs of the people.
The Mauryan Empire, which lasted about 130 years, tried implementing a different kind of political
force–one that better satisfied the people. The leader, Ashoka, used modern religious teachings to
support his people, which seemed to work much more effectively than Legalism would during the
Qin Empire. Another

The Qin Shi Huangdi Qin Essay
Qin Shi Huangdi, the first Qin emperor, was a proactive and ambitious emperor who implemented a
central bureaucratic system that oversaw the evolution and unification of China at the cost of public
sentiment. The Qin Dynasty is considered among the most influential dynasties as it laid the
foundation for the massive cultural and economic development of China that took place during the
Han Dynasty, but it also failed to achieve many of its pro–commoner ideological goals. In fact,
socioeconomic disparity was not alleviated and despite the notion of enriching the lives of the
common people, it was under Qin rule in which public resentment of the authoritarian government
peaked as there were countless peasant revolts against the iron–handed bureaucratic rule of China.
Because a paranoid emperor alone wielded political clout and influence, the tumultuous few years of
Qin reign was rife with paranoia and suspicion among the masses. Although the Qin Dynasty is
seldom thought as possessing the same glaring discrepancy between ideology and state that the
Communist regime in post–World War II China had despite the similarities, the failure of the
flawless egalitarian state models in socioeconomic and political aspects during the Qin Dynasty
mirrored the developments in early Communist China. Among the key aspects of the Qin unification
was the act of completely clearing all local aristocracies and uniting the peasant class into a single,
mobilized workforce. Ideally, the Qin

Xia Dynasty Essay
The Xia Dynasty
Overview
There are ancient accounts about the history of a small kingdom along the Yellow River that existed
from about 2,000 BC to 1,600 BC. The main ancient accounts are in the Records of the Grand
Historian (史記) that were written between about 109 BC and 91 BC by Sima Qian and another
textthat is called the Bamboo Annals (竹書紀年) that was a text that was said to have been buried
with the King of Wei who died in 296 BC and was rediscovered in 281 AD during the Jin Dynasty.
The text was written on flat pieces of bamboo, and this is why it is called the Bamboo Annals. Are
these accounts accurate? It is said that the Xia Dynasty people didn't keep written records, but that
their histories were passed orally. Archeologists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More to the south of modern Shaanxi area, where the part of the Chinese population was greater
than in the west, agriculture was the main economical tradition. The largest part of the territory was
owned by the state or the emperor and was given to farming peasants who in turn had to pay taxes.
Most other parts belonged to the Tangut aristocracy and to state officials, but also to Buddhist and
Daoist monasteries. Only few peasants and private persons owned larger parts of land, but it was
allowed to open up and to new land in mountainous and remote areas.
The rulers Li Jiqian 李繼遷 and Li Deming 李德明 supported the construction of irrigation canals
that were crucial for the development of a qualified agriculture in arid areas, especially around the
capital Xingqing 興慶 (modern Yinchuan 銀川/Ningxia). One of these cannels is called "Royal
cannel of the Li [clan]" (Liwang qu 李王渠). The produced grain was stored in imperial granaries
(yucang 衘倉). Although far the greatest part of the peasants were Chinese, in the course of time
more and more Tangut or other Non–Chinese engaged in farming instead of cattle breeding. A very
important and successful economical sphere was the production of woolen products, basing on the
large herds. Wall paintings in stone caves depict scenes of daily life and of artisanry and
craftsmenship. Iron production was well developed – partially due to the permanent warfare with the

Sexism In Ah Q

  • 1. Sexism In Ah Q In Chinese culture, the Confucian attitude towards society seemed to prevail. Women lacked a voice, education was bereft of importance, and writing lacked substance. However, Lu Xun, one of the most prominent writers during the May Fourth movement, was a leading figure in helping shed the image of Confucian literature. His satirical style brought to light some of the major issues occurring in Chinese culture including the common attitude towards scholars, the sexist society as well as the everlasting belief that superstition and fortune were important. In "Kong Yiji," Lu Xun chronicles the troubled times of a scholar, and despite his intellect becomes mocked by the villagers and ultimately is cast off. Lu Xun explores the gender inequality in his short story "Ah Q," with the main character being attacked for disrespecting women. "Medicine" is inundated with many traditional Chinese superstitions, yet each superstition has an ironic outcome as nothing goes to plan. Moreover, Lu Xun's parodies not only created a more realistic perspective of modern beliefs, but his parodies completely reject the traditional Confucian beliefs, paving the way for new Chinese voices. In Lu Xun's short story, "The True Story of Ah Q," Ah Q's sexist tendencies flood the text. Lu Xun pokes fun at the pettiness of Ah Q's life when he declares one of his victories his victimization of a nun. Trying to impress men, Ah Q "pinched her hard again before letting her go" (Lu Xun, ). In fact, Ah Q took ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A giant statue overlooking the stage, faceless yet easily recognizable as the Great Helmsman, scenes that resemble a Cultural Revolution–era public persecution – many aspects of "Mr. Big," a new play about Lu Xun (1881–1936), modern China's most famous writer, carry political undertones, and it's not to everyone's liking. "Mr. Big" opens with Lu Xun's soul heading to heaven after his death. "I just think: if losing your soul is only the way to survive, is the physical state of being alive worth it?" "You 've seen too much for your age," said Jingyan. Jingyan turned to Yuan, catching how the young man was chewing on the inside of his cheeks and lips again. From the moment Yuan slipped and sent that tile to the ground earlier tonight, Jingyan thought the young man was unreasonably distracted. "Did something happen today?" Yuan said, "Princess Kara–Shutai killed my father and committed suicide." Jingyan 's eyes snapped to Yuan 's face. "My mother was the Chief of the White Shadow Sect," said Yuan. "When she realized my father wanted to marry Princess Kara–Shutai, she stopped taking her medicine. They were married a day before she passed away and I vowed to become everything my father didn 't want me to be." "Once Xia Jiang is released from his house arrested, he will kill many, many people," said Yuan. "I don 't think I will survive that bloodbath." "Don 't say things like that," said Jingyan. Deep inside, he knew Xia Jiang was a man of impulse. He 'd been humiliated today and his wrath would descend on anything he could access, in the most violent and bloody way possible. • 11. Qin Shi Huangdi, The First Qin Essay Qin Shi Huangdi, the first Qin emperor, was an ambitious emperor who implemented a central bureaucratic system that oversaw the evolution and unification of China at the cost of public sentiment. The Qin Dynasty is considered to be among the most influential dynasties as it laid the foundation for the massive cultural and economic development of China that took place during the Han Dynasty, but it also failed to achieve many of its pro–commoner ideological goals. In fact, socioeconomic disparity was not alleviated and despite the notion of enriching the lives of the common people, it was under Qin rule in which public resentment of the authoritarian government peaked as there were countless peasant revolts against the iron–handed bureaucratic rule of the Qin. Because a paranoid emperor alone wielded political clout and influence, the tumultuous few years of Qin reign was rife with paranoia and suspicion among the masses. Although the Qin Dynasty is seldom thought to possess the same glaring discrepancy between ideology and state that the Communist regime in post–World War II China had, the failure of the flawless egalitarian state models in socioeconomic and political aspects during the Qin Dynasty mirrored the developments in early Communist China. Among the key aspects of the Qin unification was the act of completely clearing all local aristocracies and uniting the peasant class into a single, mobilized workforce. Ideally, the Qin bureaucracy sought to empower the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We also need to convince people to come to our side which is we follow Rome's idea of aqua ducts which gives easy access to water, people will come. The Qin Dynasty had the equality of man down to the better which would make everybody happy. If you were a sixteen to seventeen male of five feet in height you had military service, ful fill his labor obligations, and pay taxes on land (Reilly, 129). I think these are important keys to have a powerful structure and make people come to our side. I would use the hard/soft coercion of Rome. The hard coercion of Rome was military. The Representation Of The Society Through Art Chinese Literature Student Name Institution Affiliation Chinese Literature Throughout the human revolution, the representation of the society through art has been a common phenomenon. On the advent of literary skills of writing, people could represent their world better than before. However, the artists were only allowed to present the social ideas in the acceptable or the classical ways. Unfortunately, this traditional method of conveying knowledge or ideas was limited and somehow unrealistic of what was truly happening in the community. The language had to be polished and altered to fit the social standards. Nevertheless, as the traditional forms of leadership shifted slowly from the feudal to more democratic ones, ... Interestingly, Xun starts this story by using classical writing when introducing the sane friend but totally switches to vernacular when writing the content of the madman. The vernacular use enables the author to speak of the society as it is, using the very words that are employed in the society. Therefore, this makes his work more realistic. Furthermore, the themes that the author employs are authentic as well. Through realism writing movement, Xun criticizes the four thousand years old feudal Chinese system which has perpetuated human cannibalism. Through an insane man, the author exposes the real tribulations that everyday people go through and have come to perceive it as part and parcel of their lives. Also, Xun uses characterization to bring out the issues that would be considered uncomfortable in such governance. Therefore, the madman character, who has the social freedom to say anything and is more likely to be ignored, enables Xun to agonize the feudal system injustices. Apart from characterization, Xun employs symbolism and hyperbole in his work. In A Madman 's Diary, the author uses cannibalism to symbolize the feudal Chinese system, which for thousands of years has enabled the wealthy to further benefit off the poor. As a result, the gap between the poor and the rich would never be bridged. Through the diarist, it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The wicked, suffocating presence churning around him felt like a cyclone made of microscopic blades and the buzzing noise in his head grew alarmingly louder. The voice, detached and ghostly, reverberated until it became an echo that petrified him on a whole new level. Jingyan tried to lift his arms, but his body wouldn't move now. The set up wasn't fair. With superior martial art skills, most, if not all of Mei Changsu's men could retreat into safety before capture. As if he'd read Jingyan's mind, Mei Changsu said, "Your soldiers will die fighting against Hua one last time, in exchange for their prince's safety and North Qi's successful invasion." "You plan to take me away," said Jingyan. If Mei Changsu'd planned to kill him, he would've been dead before he reached for his sword. Mei Changsu had ordered all the servants to be slaughtered so no one could witness his escape. "Where?" Using characters from Diary of a Madman, Ah Q, and an Unimportant Affair, I will explain why this topic stood out to me the most. In Diary of a Madman, the main character is a madman who writes about his delusions and lives with his older brother. Ah Q follows a man who is deemed simply as Ah Q. It describes his hardships, which are brought on by the cruelty of the society, as well as by his own doings. There are several symbolic narrations in the story. The symbolism of the story is allegorical (Hanan 68). In the preface, Lu Xun uses an ironic technique by narrated in classical Chinese in order to show a false and polite world made by cannibalistic feudal society. In the eyes of Lu Xun, the madman is the hero who plays a better role in the society because only the madman knows the truth and can rise in rebellion. The madman who is an innovative and reformed thought representative is a symbol of oppressive man–eating nature of the feudal system. Even though he tries his best to rise in rebellion, he fails every time. He is trapped in his own mind and can 't help considering that he 's in the danger of being eaten. The madman could not understand the conspiracy of eating him, so he was suspicious of everyone. When the madman recovers, he is not the hero anymore; also he joins others to be one of man–eaters. • 31. Sentimentalism In Ah Q Early 20th Century Chinese Sentimentalities The True Story of Ah Q, as written in 1921 by Lu Xun, is widely seen as a magnum opus of contemporary Chinese literature. Xun wanted to alter the way of thinking as well as enlighten his fellow Chinese following the 1911 Revolution that overturned the final Chinese dynasty. Xun uses the protagonist of the story, Ah Q, as a representative of China as a whole as he saw the nation to be, giving the reader an insight into social classes and attitudes that permeated Chinese society in the early 20th century. Xun does not paint a great picture of Ah Q and unfortunately, this is his opinion of Chinese society as a whole at the time. This portrayal of Chinese society is harsh and eye– opening but to Xun, very accurate and necessary to transform the thinking of Chinese people at that time. During the early half of the 20th century, China was a struggling nation. The country was overwhelmingly controlled by foreign powers and had little to no autonomy. After losing the Opium Wars to Britain and France, coupled with an attack from the Japanese, the Chinese had very little control over China. These losses led to China also losing Control of the all–important coastal ports that were very lucrative. The European influence permeated the Chinese country as people felt helpless with their wishes and voices not being heard. Under such circumstances, one could easily fall into a state of mind where they do not care. This is similar to the mindset and characteristics of Ah Q. Ah Q was seen as backwards, aloof, careless, but with an air of arrogance that was delusional. One common trait that comes from people feeling helpless is drug usage. People use drugs and alcohol to help cope with whatever issues they are having; this is no different for Ah Q. In one instance, the protagonist is seen drunk, cavorting around the village, apparently celebrating the fact that one of the elite from the village had passed an examination given by the county. In his state of drunkenness, Q proclaims that he has the same last name as the elite, and that they are related. The anthology contains a series of sixteen vignettes, four of which belonging to one of each of the four members of The Joy Luck Club. These vignettes cover the perspectives of mothers who immigrated to America from China, along with the flip side point of view, taken over by each of their daughters. In the anthology, Tan reflects on her past life and incorporates it into the book, exploring cultural, relationship, and internal conflicts. The first chapter of "The Joy Luck Club" is named after one mother, Suyuan Woo. The reader is introduced to Jing–Mei, her daughter, struggling to replace her mother in her spot at the mahjong table, as she died two months prior. In 1949, Suyuan Woo and her husband, Canning, left for America in effort for a better life–– two years before the birth of Jing–Mei. There, she joined a Chinese baptist church where she met the other core members of The (rendition of) Joy Luck Club: the Hsus, the Jongs, and the St. Clairs. Suyuan and Jing–Mei Woo, despite how well they get along, run into many conflicts, mostly regarding their differences in culture. He argued that Confucianism was the "man–eating manners", which gave birth to those who just cared about themselves without any conscience of protecting their family. He was not only the symbol of the poor proletarian but also a farmer suppressed by authority. In addition, he did not have a name at all, and the only name he got was deprived by Mr. Zhao. The method that Ah Q most often used was spirit victory. That was kind of expression of self– deceiving. For example, when he was beaten, he comforted himself by using" Son hit his father". Moreover, while other people teased him that he was poor, he argued that my ancestors were richer than yours. His characters, in essence, were devoid of self– awareness. He judged people with his own standard, where anything that not conform to his standard would be wrong. From this novel, Lu Xun seriously criticized the social reality at that time when people were self– deceiving, who always took themselves as the center of the world. The attitude of Lu Xun toward farmers was that on the one hand, he felt sympathetic to them. On the other hand, he hated that they did not fight for themselves. The Han and Roman Empires: A Test in Longevity Essay The history of the empires of Afro–Eurasia ebb and flow like an ocean tide; it's waves representing the degrees of dissension; its over bearing water levels claiming the dry shore in its path, claiming the sands as its people. Two empires in Afro–Eurasia, born in the final years before the common era; defied those that came before in their ability to maintain their reign over their respective realms. The Qin were depicted as cruel, with the Han being moral, and following in the Confucian ideals; though in reality the Qin and Han laws were similar in severity1. In the beginning of the Han empire, there was significant compromise with the aristocratic groups who helped to overthrow the Qin. Liu Bang handed out land grants to his military supporters as well as his relatives. The bureaucracy of the Qin was adopted as the basis for the Han empire; it was highly centralized, and all were affected. All males were required to register, pay taxes, and serve in the military. Former regional princes were removed from power and rebellions were crushed, in their places regional officials took over. A civilian official and military commandant were responsible for each commandery, which were the provinces of the new empire. Turning down the expensive high school in the next state, that was one. Thinking she would be fine jumping out of a tree, only to fall and break her leg in six places, that was another. And right now, walking down the bustling street with her arms full of carrots, this was one too. "Psst. Xia. It's me," a voice hissed from inside the alley behind her. "Yu?" Xia spun around into the alley and found herself face to face with her closest friend. Yu had been missing for months. Since last October there had been nothing from her but radio silence. The day she disappeared, Xia had found a letter shoved under her bedside table, in Yu's handwriting. It contained nothing but the words "I'm safe." Way to say goodbye to your best friend before disappearing off the grid for four months, Xia thought. A million emotions swirled through Xia as she looked up at Yu, relief, shock, anger, anger, anger. Yu looked like she always did, dressed in jeans and a jacket despite the hot weather, with her dark hair pulled into a high bun and a backpack slung over one shoulder. Xia wanted to hit her and hug her at the same time. "What are you doing here?" she hissed. "Where have you been?" "I've been busy. Travelling, working a bit. Y'know." Confucius is an educator having over three thousand disciples, a statesman employed not only in his own State but in several other, but most importantly, he is a ritualist who is a firm believer and steadfast advocator of the Way, which has long been discarded by rulers in Confucius time. During his time, the House of Chou had declined, the ancient rites and moral standard were forgotten, but he had been striving to become a "superior person", a gentleman, in his whole life, and developed a variety of moral philosophies that was cited and organized by his disciples into the book Analects after Confucius's demise. Confucius was born in Tsou, a small village in the State of Lu. He was later given the personal name Chiu with courtesy name Chung–ni and the surname Kung. His father, Shuliang He, died soon after Confucius's birth, and his mother refused to tell him his father's name nor where his father was buried. Therefore, growing up in this single and impecunious Confucius was solitary and lack of social relations in his childhood, thus developing his interest in performing rites. As a child, Confucius liked to entertain himself with sacrificial vessels, using them to set out ceremony and practice that he considered to be rites and sacrificial offerings. • 59. Why Is Aiesec Relevant For Queen 's University, Canada,... GENERAL QUESTIONS 1. Why is AIESEC relevant to Queen's University, Canada, and the world? Queen's University is located in a university town, Kingston. It has a distinct culture that allows everyone to feel connected to one other. There is also a wide variation of the places students come from, even within Canada – Vancouver to New Brunswick. Most of the students live far from home, often adjusting oneself to the new environment. By this, Queen's students are already taking a step in becoming a world citizen, making their AIESEC journey less challenging compared to other LCs. Canada still have the prevalent issue about racism, gender equality, and more. However, the main problem is that many think that those issues are not present in Canada. AIESEC can act as a fundamental solution by bringing in TNs with iGT. As the numbers of TNs in Canada increase, Canadians will be more aware of the issues that needs to be improved within the country. The relevance of AIESEC to the world is based upon the number of EPs realized. AIESEC consists of young leaders that take steps in creating the world a better place to live. This is done by following the guideline of SDGs. Every EP on an AIESEC journey makes a contribution in trying to solve one of the SDGs. From this, AIESEC hopes that the problems that are face currently would not be the problems that are faced in 2030. 2. What does being a VP of AIESEC Queen's mean to you? • 61. A Madman's Diary By Lu Xun Analysis Many authors use their work to express their thoughts about the flaws in the societies in which they live. Lu Xun masks his criticisms of the once feudal society in China in his story, "A Madman's Diary," by comparing the feudalistic society to cannibalism. The story begins with the narrator going to visit two brothers. Upon arrival, the narrator learns that the younger of the two brothers has recently been cured of madness, and moved away. The older sibling offers the narrator his brother's diary for the narrator to read. After the narrator's explanation of how he got the madman's diary, the rest of the story is composed of various entries from the diary the narrator was given. In the diary entries, it is learned that the madman is very fearful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In "A Madman's Diary," the madman is the only one who is truly in touch with reality. He is the only one who is seeing the true cannibalistic nature of the feudal system. The metaphor between cannibalism and feudalism is meant to convey to the readers the flaws of the feudal system without Lu Xun directly criticizing the system. Even though the madman is currently terrified of the society he is living in, he shows hope for a better future. In the last diary entry, he ponders the possibility of the nature of this society changing. He questions whether or not there are children who have not consumed other people. He says that the children need to be saved from the nature of this society of consuming other people to live. This represents Lu Xun's belief that the feudalistic society can change if the ways of that society are not taught to the children and that he has hope for the future of society. "...The narrator cultivates and maintains the courage to hope that the future for the children of China will be separate from the past" (Laws 51). Lu Xun conveys a sense of hope for a better future in China through the madman's hope in the story. The madman is the only one who is truly aware of the problems of the society that they live in. Everyone else around him simply seems to accept the ways of life. Metaphorically, this is representative of how "normal" people are blind to the problems of the feudal system, and that it would take a madman to see the issues behind how they are living. Most writers warned to separate from classical Chinese. This included writers such as Zhang Ailing, Lu Xun, and Xiao Hong. Not only did their education have an impact on their beginnings as a writer, but as we can see through their novels, their childhood also have an affect on their writings. Zhang Ailing, also known by her name Eileen Chang, was born into a wealthy family, but she had a troubled childhood. Her father was addicted to opium and she left with her mother to France, and did not return to China until later on. Her experiences in China were not happy, and when she left, she no longer gave her tales a happy ending. When she went back to Hong Kong and war had broken out, girls were portrayed as caring more about themselves than the actual dangers of the war. One girl, Ailing describes panicking because she did not have enough wardrobe suitable for the war. But it was not only her, it was almost everyone who had a psychological response with some close association with clothing. Ailing gives the example of Sureika, who came from a remote village on the Malay peninsula. She was unlike any other girl at school, she chose medicine instead of the normal education and was seen as naive. After they were instructed to hide, when a bomb had landed next to their dorm, Sureika sorted out her brightest clothes and went to serve as a nurse for Red Cross. Her bright ... • 69. The Rise Of Power And Power Throughout history many empires have risen and fallen, in both the ancient and new worlds. This has caused philosophers and historians to ask why? Why do empires rise to great power, only to fall later? Judging from historical evidence, ancient empires maintained dominance according to the uses of political power and enforcement. If that power was neglected or misused, the kingdoms almost inevitably fell. The Qin Empire, known for its belief in Legalism, was one of many empires that did not last very long. Existing for about 15 years, the emperor used Legalistic policies to enforce ideas that humans were stupid and problems–solutions, therefore, could only be found through discipline and punishment. Such harsh practices, no doubt, served as a trial to the people and severely hindered the Empire's ability to function properly. In order to function, empires must, to one extent or another, have the consent of the people. Failing to do so could likely result in revolts such as that of the Yellow Turbans, which occurred years later during the Han dynasty. The Qin Empire only stood briefly due to its lack of stable political policies to satisfy the needs of the people. The Mauryan Empire, which lasted about 130 years, tried implementing a different kind of political force–one that better satisfied the people. The leader, Ashoka, used modern religious teachings to support his people, which seemed to work much more effectively than Legalism would during the Qin Empire. Another ... • 75. The Qin Shi Huangdi Qin Essay Qin Shi Huangdi, the first Qin emperor, was a proactive and ambitious emperor who implemented a central bureaucratic system that oversaw the evolution and unification of China at the cost of public sentiment. The Qin Dynasty is considered among the most influential dynasties as it laid the foundation for the massive cultural and economic development of China that took place during the Han Dynasty, but it also failed to achieve many of its pro–commoner ideological goals. In fact, socioeconomic disparity was not alleviated and despite the notion of enriching the lives of the common people, it was under Qin rule in which public resentment of the authoritarian government peaked as there were countless peasant revolts against the iron–handed bureaucratic rule of China. Because a paranoid emperor alone wielded political clout and influence, the tumultuous few years of Qin reign was rife with paranoia and suspicion among the masses. Although the Qin Dynasty is seldom thought as possessing the same glaring discrepancy between ideology and state that the Communist regime in post–World War II China had despite the similarities, the failure of the flawless egalitarian state models in socioeconomic and political aspects during the Qin Dynasty mirrored the developments in early Communist China. Among the key aspects of the Qin unification was the act of completely clearing all local aristocracies and uniting the peasant class into a single, mobilized workforce. Ideally, the Qin ... Most other parts belonged to the Tangut aristocracy and to state officials, but also to Buddhist and Daoist monasteries. Only few peasants and private persons owned larger parts of land, but it was allowed to open up and to new land in mountainous and remote areas.
