back in Bradley, South Dakota, Audrey Grigg's uncle and aunt, Robert and Bessie Brown couldn't find anyone to work their farmland. Ever since
Bessie inherited the land from her parents, tenant farmers kept it productive. Although Robert grew up on a farm, he never farmed as an adult. Shortly
after serving in World War I, he and his brother, Harry, acquired a Ford dealership in Bradley, which they operated throughout the 1920s, 30s, and into
the 40s as part–owners.
With no other solution evident for Bessie's farm to remain under cultivation, Robert approached his brother, Harry, with a proposition to sell to him his
share of the automobile dealership. The result of such a transaction would free Robert up to run the farm himself. The brothers, however, couldn't agree
on the sale price. After unsuccessfully negotiating favorable terms, an exasperated Harry told his brother that he needed to either buy or sell with the
little over one thousand dollars in the company's bank account. Robert agreed to these conditions and in a meeting at the bank to conclude the business
deal, Robert shocked Harry by buying, instead of selling, the dealership.

Monuments are used to memorialize and honor moments, individuals and events of the past. Some monuments do this better than other monuments. In
creating a monument there are three essential factors a group or agency should consider to make the monument as effective as possible: location,
design features, purpose and backstory. Why these factors? Location and design factors play a massive role in the reception the monument will receive,
based on its environment, size and looks a monument will be perceived differently. The purpose and backstory are the two single most important factors
to consider in creating a monument. The monuments history, its reason, is the reason just? Is the purpose proper? Does it accurately memorialize the
subject? All these questions come with the purpose and backstory of a monument.
Location; where the monument is plays a big role in how effective a monument is in memorializing or honoring a person or moment. For instance
Mount Rushmore, to the untrained eye, is four important men of the past on the side of a mountain, but it is actually quite more. "I have to admit:

When the Sioux migrated to the Great Plains area, they most certainly came across the the Badlands in their discovery. The name "Badlands" is
derived from the Lakota phrase makИџГіЕЎiДЌa, meaning Land of Bad Spirits. Today, some Lakota believe that the Badlands are a place to be
avoided because it is where bad spirits exist. This paper will discuss the geographic location, geological formation, Lakota legends, reasons the site is

The Badlands are geographically located in Southwest South Dakota, the Southern Unit being within the Pine Ridge Reservation. The Oglala Lakota

The Badlands were deposited in layers over millions of years. The layers are constructed of sediments such as sand, silt, and clay that have been
cemented together into sedimentary rocks. Different environments caused different sediments to accumulate there at different times. The oldest
formations are at the bottom and the youngest are at the top.
The black Pierre Shale is the bottom layer of the Badlands and was deposited between 69 and 75 million years ago when a shallow sea stretched

The origination of this case study begins on one brisk morning back on the 19th of September in 2008 when TransCanada first submitted their
application to the U.S. State Department to build the Keystone XL pipeline. The Canadian based energy infrastructure company proposed a

Statement on Approach to Teaching and Advising Much has evolved since my initial years at South Dakota State University when I had no teaching
appointment. During those initial years I took advantage of any available opportunity to increase my college level teaching experience mostly in the
form of guest lectures in ABS 704 and other courses where I lectured on Plant Functional Genomics and Abiotic Stresses. Based on this experience, I
developed Independent Study opportunities for interested students in wheat molecular breeding and in plant genomics. Interest in this area was strong
enough that I expanded it into a regular course and offered it as a special topic ("Introduction to Plant Genomics") starting in the fall of 2009. Those
early years afforded me time and opportunities to informally interact with diverse faculty to keep maturing my teaching philosophy and approaches.
Although most of my teaching in the last years is at the graduate level, I have a special consideration for ABS482–582, an international experience to
discover the agricultural industry in Argentina. In 2007, I was part of the team that developed this course. Unfortunately, due to an important health
problem in my family I was not able to attend the first trip. Later on, in 2011, due to unexpected faculty turnover, I was able to co–lead the course.
During the fall semester the students attended introductory lectures in Argentinian agriculture, economics, politics, culture and basic Spanish skills.

textbook account of much of the Native American experience in the era of European contact through the western expansion years early in United
States history. It is comprehensive to a point, it does not completely tell the history of every tribe that had contact with the white people and the
American government. What it does cover, to the best of my knowledge, is historically accurate. Being an historical account it reports the events
from a historian's perspective. Although it is somewhat biased, it is from a Native American historian's perspective, it doesn't attempt to dramatize
the history. The text is pragmatic. The stating of the facts is boring and almost tedious in places throughout the book. It contains no dialogue with

Have you ever read a text that included items such as a bold cowboy, trusty horse, beautiful female, or a dark villain in a dry, isolated, and
undeveloped setting? If so, it's a great possibility that you were reading a classic Western. Many readers of this genre would describe its stereotypes as
what I listed above. You can almost always find that protagonist cowboy hero, who tends to be a good–looking and sharp character that fights the dirty,
rugged, evil villain in an epic climax while trying to save his gorgeous and innocent lady. The setting is often a flat, unpopulated, and undeveloped

However, Kolb describes Marshal Jack Potter as "a nervous unarmed honeymooner, who rides a train instead of a horse" (98). In the story, Potter is
described as wearing a new black suit that most likely was purchased in San Antonio (23). This gives the reader the idea that the East influenced the
West a great deal, considering a hard–nosed, sharp–shooting town hero most likely should not be wearing a new suit that was made in the East. The
stereotypical western criminal is mean, dirty, selfish, and constantly stirring up trouble. In "The Bride," your criminal is Scratchy Wilson. However,
as Kolb describes, the difference between Scratchy and most other Western villains is that Scratchy's "main crime seems to be that he can't hold his
liquor" (98). The eastern culture is brought up again in the story through Scratchy's clothes. You'd expect to visualize a rough and dirty character
whose soul is as dark as his clothes. With Scratchy, you get a criminal wearing a "maroon–colored flannel shirt" that was made in New York (24).

Debra Marquart delivers a detailed memoir of growing up in North Dakota. The passage from The Horizontal World, her 2006 memoir, offers insight
of what a person who grew up there might have seen. Marquart's choice of words when describing this part of her life shows both positive and
negative emotions and memories of her time living in North Dakota, but overall portray a place that is unique despite its dull appearance. Through an
account of her experiences and history, Marquart characterizes the region where she grew up in as an average yet meaningful place by using
generalization and imagery. Marquart introduces North Dakota as a place where everything looks the same and people are the same. She generalizes

The tone and choice of words change as Marquart recounts the history of North Dakota. While the first half of the passage used words such as
"lonely" and "treeless", the latter half used more optimistic imagery of the land such as "neatness" and "perfect confluence" (49). This more
lighthearted and positive imagery shows that although North Dakota seems dull and unexciting, she still possesses admiration for her home. The
imagery is used to describe the origins and history of North Dakota which suggests Marquart has appreciation for the regions origins. It also shows
how Marquart believes times have changed and so has North Dakota. Although it was once a place that was deemed uninhabitable, she chooses to
highlight its positive attributes, which suggest she admires its transformation despite its flaws. Marquart characterizes the region as a place that she has
appreciation for and is much more remarkable than its appearance

James Butler Hickock, also known as Wild Bill Hickock, was born in Homer, Illinois (now Troye Grove, Illinois) on May 27, 1837. He was an
outlaw of the American Old West. He was a skilled gunfighter, gambler, and lawman, which are some of the many reasons why he is famous.
Hickock was born and raised on a farm in Illinois. He went west at the age of 18 in 1855 first working as a stagecoach driver, then as a lawman in
Kansas and Nebraska. While in Nebraska, Hickok was often called "Duck Bill". He grew a mustache and began referring to himself as "Wild Bill".
He fought and spied for the Union Army during the American Civil War. wild bill.jpg On March 22, 1858, he was elected as constable of
Monticello Township, Kansas. A year later, he joined the Russell, Waddell, & Majors Freight Co, the company of the Pony Express. In 1860, he
was seriously injured by a bear while driving a freight team from Missouri to Texas. He found the road they were taking blocked by a Cinnamon
bear and its two cubs. He dismounted and approached the bear. He shot it in the head, but the bullet ricocheted from its skull. The bear attacked,
crushing him with its body. Hickock slashed its throat with a knife. When the Civil War began in April 1861, Hickok signed up as a teamster for the
Union Army in Sedalia, Missouri. In September 1862, he was discharged for an unknown reason. There are no known records of him for over a year,
though historians think that Hickok was operating as a Union spy in
