Even though a well–educated person is thought of as one who has extensive college education and attend the finest schools, a well–educated person can
also be one who is educated with hands–on experience without a college degree.
When referring to a person as well–educated it usually has to do more with formal education than informal education. When someone is describing a
person as well–educated, consideration for both formal and informal types of education should be included. Formal education is very important in the
early years since children have yet to acquire the necessary fundamental skills. Informal education is very important as well; however, it is learning on a
different level. Various studies conducted over the years have shown that informal learning helps solidify the information learned in mind. According to
Psychologist, David Kolb, his Experiential Learning Theory takes a more holistic approach and emphasizes how experiences, including cognitions,
environmental factors, and emotions, influence the learning process (Smith, M. K. 2001, 2010). A study performed in 2009 by Purdue University

What does it mean to be well educated? To be well educated it is a balance between academics and practical knowledge. Throughout this paper I will

Practical knowledge is the knowledge that we acquire as small children and from our parents and from friends. This is also known as "street smarts".

What about the Amish people? This subculture of people quit school in the 8th grade, but they possess the skills to run successful businesses, raise

I had a hard time picking which essays to use. I had a lengthy discussion with myself before I decided on "What Does It Means To Be Well–Educated"
by Alfie Kohn. I do think that I'm well educated even though I didn't learn anything from the school district that I was enrolled in I always said to
myself that I wouldn't want my children to have to go through the things I had to go through. How I became aware of things or learn things was
because I do a lot of research and ask questions so I can find out more about what I need and wanted to know. What I think about the term "what does
it mean to be well–educated" is I am aware that some believe, based on their own words, that if black children grow up to be adults who are
well–educated, friendly, and polite, no harm won 't come to them. If they obey the rules, they 'll be safe. But recent news has proven that this isn't
always true. There aren't any hard and fast rules, promises, assurance, or guarantees. Once we understand what "well–educated" actually means in the

In my own experience, I have seen children perform very well when given flash cards to learn their math. In both ways the children are being tested,
but with flash cards there is a more relaxed and fun atmosphere which takes the pressure off of the children. While Mr. Kohn (2003) does not

Nevertheless, something is imbibed. Education in a good school does seem to show in the kind of person you become and whether anything is
remembered or not the molding influence is indelible. Secondly good education when put to use is much handier when compared to a lower grade of
education. Kohn's question of consensus set me rapidly agreeing with him. Levels of education do vary between countries, states, and even the past and
present. What is well–educated in one country may not be up to standard in another (2003, par. 9). Today a person with a doctorate in India is
well–respected and highly valued in his/her country but when the same person wishes to teach in America or Britain he/she must acquire a teaching
certification as most of the time local credentials are not accepted.
The next stage of Kohn's reasoning involved ruling out what might not be considered as being well–educated. Being well–educated does not depend on
the number of hours spent in class, how well–prepared for a career one is, test–scores, or rote–learning (2003, pars. 12–15). Although intelligent
students do get good test scores this does not happen all of the time as there are several smart students who do not seem to perform well. Also, and in
this as in the previous point I completely agree with Kohn, memorizing everything that is just a click away on the internet does not necessarily translate
into being considered well–educated.

There is a famous quote by Miles Kingston that states, "knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad." Often
people use the words Knowledge, Wisdom, and Education interchangeably. However, this is far from appropriate. Currently, being an educated
individual does not necessarily mean that that individual is wise or knowledgeable but simply that he or she has had an "education" and therefore
carries a level of status and qualification.
The first and most often misunderstood argument is that an education does not guarantee wisdom or knowledge. To understand this, we must first
examine what is wisdom. Merriam Webster defines wisdom as "the soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of experience,
knowledge, and good judgment." In order to be wise, one must be able to apply a combination of these things to real life situations. Although an
education often provides information to students in which they may use in order to become knowledgeable, as I will further discuss, the education
system has been highly criticized for creating a system where students merely memorize information in order to reach certain academic requirements as

Our team likes this definition of an educated person. We understand that if you go to school, you will learn a subject well. But we also understand
that many of us will see career paths that are not traditional, or linear in nature. We will work in fields that are not what we studied. If all we learned

According to Alfie Kohn's essay "The dangerous myth of grade inflation," one of the most commonly–cited truisms in education today is that higher
education is 'easier' than it was in the past. Critics contend that grades have become puffed up while student performance has actually weakened. Kohn
believes this is a culturally–produced myth rather than a statistically justified reality. In fact, the notion that grades were less generously bestowed to
students is a durable clichГѓ© which extends back to the 19th century, and is not merely relegated to our own era. Today, the perpetrators cited as the
worst offenders are liberal professors from the 1960s who have lapped up a generally permissive attitude from that era. But "a report released just this
year by the National Center for Education Statistics revealed that fully 33.5 percent of American undergraduates had a grade–point average of C or
below in 1999–2000" (Kohn 2002: B7). Kohn sees the anxieties about grade inflation as indicative of a larger cultural anxiety of what it means to be
an educated person, and believes that a fixation on grades is a fundamentally misguided way to improve the American educational system.

more competitive than ever before, which may be prompting students to turn in higher–caliber work.
