PS4 Situational Analysis
INTRODUCTION: Sony is a Japan based company that operates in over 180 countries worldwide.
(Company Profile for Sony Corporation, 2011) Sony was co–founded by Masaru Ibuka and Aki
Miruta in 1946 and since then has grown into an international multimillion dollar company (Sony
Corporation, 2014). Ibuka and Miruta originally started out manufacturing measuring equipment
(Sony Corporation, 2014), and have expanded into more complex technological solutions, such as
laptops, gaming consoles, and communications devices. One product in particular is the PlayStation
4. The PS4 is the most recent of Sony's gaming consoles and since its release at the end of 2013 has
sold 7 million units (Plafke, 2013), raking in 45 billion dollars of revenue for ... Show more content

The company is competing with Microsoft in the computer and gaming consoles product area, then
with Panasonic in the television and music department and with LG's communications products. A
second threat Sony faces relates to most of its production being in Japan. The company is
susceptible to a fluctuating currency rate. For example the Japanese Yen has been steadily rising
against both the US dollar and the Euro since November 2013 and experienced a 5% increase
against the US dollar in December 2013. (OANDA, 2014). This made Sony's imports to these
countries from Japan seem relatively more expensive than products made locally. Another threat
Sony faces is one relating to the specific product being discussed in this report. Recently the PS4
network was hacked, allowing users' credit card details and other private information to be taken.
(MacManus, 2012). Being vulnerable to attacks from hackers is a very big threat for the Sony
Corporation. Opportunities: The Sony brand has been given many opportunities. One of these is that
Blu–ray is become increasingly more popular, which gives Sony the opportunity to make these
players as cheaply and efficiently as they can. A second opportunity is their partnership with the big
gaming franchise Fifa. This enhances Sony's corporate value. Weaknesses: One weakness of the

2.2 Differentiation Strategy: Sony always opts for differentiation in order to stand out from rest of
the competitors. Their unique product readily catches the eye of consumer and attracts them. The
figure below is called Porter Generic Matrix. The competitive scope in the figure shows when a
company follows has a broad or narrow target. If a company has low competitive advantage the
focus will be on low cost & if a company has high competitive advantage, the focus will
remain on differentiation strategy. The matrix tells the position of a company in that industry. Sony
Corporation has a broad target and high competitive advantages which allows the company to
follow differentiation strategies. The company could follow this strategy due to its high spending on
scientific research and their highly skilled, creative product development teams. Premium pricing is
also achieved by this way by the company. SONY Figure 1: Porter's Generic Matrix CHAPTER 3

Sony Corporation 's Pest Analysis
Sony Corporation's PEST Analysis
Introduction
Sony Corporation is one of the world's largest manufacturers of electronic product. It engaged in
business through electronics, motion pictures, music and financial services. Though it used to be a
leading manufacturer, Sony Corp has now been entangled with low sales rate and financial strain in
many of its product lines (Euromonitor, 2014). This paper demonstrates three events of Sony
Corporation as a case study to analyze how these external factors affect companies' decision
making, then discuss how has international business environment changed from these three events
and finally the conclusions are presented.
Sony acquired Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Inc. in 1989
Japanese corporations showed a growing interest in entertainment business in the 1980s. Sony has
been questing to win a place in the entertainment software business for some time. It merged CBS
Records in 1987 for $2 billion (Fabricant, 1989). And in September 1989, Sony Corporation
acquired Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Inc. for the amount of $3.4 billion. The Sony Group
intended to secure software in high quality so that Sony 's wealth of hardware products could be
promoted. By acquiring CBS Records and Columbia Pictures, this ultimate strategy has been
fulfilled (Sony history, 2015).

Sony Corporation is a Japanese based technology company. Sony specializes in consumer and

specific strategy it must adhere to in order to be successful. The reason for having different
strategies for each branch is to conform to the demands for each specific market. If their strategy

When he returned to Japan, he encouraged experienced, middle–aged employees of other companies
to assess their careers and consider joining Sony. The company filled many positions in this way,
and inspired other Japanese companies to do the same. Sony also played a major role in the
development of Japan as a powerful exporter during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. It also helped to
significantly improve American perceptions of "made in Japan" products. Now known for its
production quality, Sony was able to charge above–market prices for its consumer electronics and
resisted lowering prices thus increasing sales drastically. In 1971, Masaru Ibuka gave the position of
president over to his co–founder Akio Morita. Sony began a life insurance company in 1979. Amid a
global recession in the early 1980s, electronics sales dropped and the company was forced to cut
prices, thus profits fell. Around that time, Norio Ohga took up the mantle of president. He
encouraged the development of the compact disc in the 1970s and 1980s, and of the PlayStation in
the early 1990s. Ohga went on to purchase CBS Records in 1988 and Columbia Pictures in 1989,
greatly expanding Sony 's media presence. Ohga would succeed Morita as chief executive officer in
1989. Under the vision of co–founder Akio Morita and his successors, the company had

continue the sake brewing business, which was a great disappointment to his father.
Once graduating high school, Akio knew college was a must. With his favorite classes being math

Sony Computer Entertainment Vs Connectix Corporation Summary
Sony Computer Entertainment v. Connectix Corporation
Sony Computer Entertainment v. Connectix Corporation, 203 F.3d 596 (2000), is a result of the
Ninth Circuit Court of applications which governed the replication of a copyrighted BIOS software
through the progress of an emulator software does not institute copyright violation but is protected
by reasonable usage.
The court also ruled that Sony's PlayStation symbol had not been tarnished by Connectix Crop's sale
of its emulator software, the Virtual Game Station.
Context of the case
Connectix begins the progress of the Virtual Game Station (VGS) in July 1998 as a Macintosh
software application that matches Sony's current Play Station video games console's hardware and
firmware.
This would make it likely for VGS operators to play games advanced for the play station on
Macintosh hardware, with strategies to announce a Windows PC well–matched variety at a future
day.
Connectix's development approach was constructed upon inverse engineering the play Station's
BIOS firmware, primary by means of the uncharged BIOS to progress imitation for the hardware,
and then by evolving a BIOS of their own using the unique firmware as an aid for fixing.
Throughout the progress work, Connectix communicated Sony, demanding "technical support" for
finishing the VGS, but this appeal was finally decayed in September 1998.
The Video Game Station growth touched conclusion in December 1998, with the software actuality

Sony being such a large corporation is highly diversified into the electronics field, financial

will not affect the entire company as a whole as much as it would if it were only catering to that
industry. Diversification helps reduce risks and therefore minimizes the chances of failure
WEAKNESSES High Pricing In these times, with a lot of options in electronics – Sony's pricing
strategy does not seem apt as their products are relatively expensive to its competitors; whether this
be the Sony VAIO or the Sony PS3. Some people argue that this price can be justified because of the
brand name of Sony and it will most definitely look bad on the company image if Sony suddenly
drops all its prices just to be competitive in the market. In fact, Sony was forced to lower its PS3's
price by $100 just to

Corporate Social Responsibility : Sony Corporation
Sony Corporation's is one of the world's largest corporations. Sony was founded in 1946 with its
headquarter in Japan. It produces a variety of products, such as consumer's devices, gaming, and
communication devices. Its invention of the portable tape recorder was the break that the company
needed in order to grow and enter other markets. (Corporate Info, 2015). Corporation's main
purpose is to achieve the highest profit and to satisfy the stakeholder involved (Krishnan, 2011).
This encapsulated in the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR). In this regard, it is
important to examine Sony Corporation in terms of its adaptation and implementation of their social
performance. Traditional business models have allowed companies to grow and expand since the
focus is on the good of the businesses to the exclusion of everything else. This selfish regard for
other stakeholders have taken its toll on people and the environment, hence, the call for greater
responsibility and accountability from corporations, especially those that operate in many parts of
the world (Seong–Tae and Lee Sang–Yoon, 2012). In line with this, this essay will examine Sony's
Social performance regarding to the environment, employment and human right issues, and the
impact on company stakeholders and society. The stakeholder in this paper will be the shareholder,
consumers and the employees in whom they share their business with.

Japan 's Defeat During World War II Essay
Masaru Ibuka founded Sony Corporation in the aftermath of Japan's defeat during World War II (IJ
106). Following the company's startup, Ibuka urged Akio Morita, a navy technical lieutenant in
thermos optical weapons, to come to Tokyo and join him in the start–up of his new business venture
(IJ 106). In May 1946, Sony Corporation was officially established as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo
Kabushiki Kaisha (Kabushiki Kaisha), a joint stock company (SE1). From the start Ibuka and
Morita were determined to develop a global market for their products (Global 50). During the early
1950's Japanese products suffered from the public perception of their "poor quality" as compared to
products made in the United States (IJ 106). Morita reasoned that if Sony was going to enter into the
manufacturing and sales of electronic equipment, it was necessary to establish a market presence in
the United States (IJ 107). Thus in 1952, Morita decided to traveled to the United States in order to
examine how US companies manufactured and marketed tape recorders as well as to examine
potential market opportunities for Totsuken exports (IJ 107) At the time, Western Electric had
recently made the patent rights for manufacturing a transistor (which was invented in 1948 at
AT&T's Bell Laboratories) available to anyone who would pay royalties. Ibuka's desire to

MARKETING PLAN:
Most are "doers" and not "planners". If we want to do the right marketing activities in the right way
we must start with a marketing plan. For that, marketing planning must be continuously undertaken
to see any shifting market conditions, changing customer needs, competitive threats as well as

Sony Australia Ltd: A Case Study Of Sony Corporation
Introduction– An Overview
It is a viable alternative to apply CSR in Corporate and management strategies to outclass
competing companies. An organization by carrying out its ethical principles and convictions in their
activities and propagating them via organizational network influences the relationship with
shareholders, clients and employees. The application of CSR can lead to social benefits and
legitimacy for the firm since it can consider itself as a coalition in which the different stakeholders
participate to gain their own benefit. (Freeman, 1984).
The format of the paper includes an analysis of the merging of CSR in the business management of
an organization, case for and against CSR with intent to present an overview. Further, we present a
case study of Sony Australia Ltd. a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan's Sony Corporation focusing
on their CSR strategies. Finally we conclude with some observations on the affiliation of CSR and
business success and the role of ethics in sustaining a firm's competitive edge.
The correlation between Business Ethics and Corporate Governance: The fundamental link
Values in business are the driving force that determines 'what is right and what is wrong while doing
business. What values are to individuals, ethics are to business' (Fernando, A.C. 2012). An obliging
attitude towards labor welfare is a value that may impel an entrepreneur to perform more for
workers than what the labor laws enunciates.

engaged in the development, design and manufacture of various kinds of electronic equipment and
instruments and devices for consumer and industrial markets.
Over the years, the company has become a worldwide industry leader in technology, and has
released many products along the way. One of the company's secrets to success is they tend to create
their own in–house standards for technology rather than copying the standards of other
manufacturers. This does not mean the company has not had its lows. In September of 2000 for one,
the company had a net worth of a whopping 100 billion dollars but by December of the next year,
this figure had plunged to $18 billion (Hao and Misra, 2012). The company has attempted to recover
from the losses during the last decade through joint ventures and outsourcing. As such, the aim of

Sony : An Interesting Company
Sony is an interesting company. Today it is much known for its invention such as, PlayStation or the
Walkman. But Sony just as small as any other company. It started in the late 40s. In its early stages
it only had a total of eight employees selling radios out of a store. The company grew to fame to its

Walkman was created by Nobutoshi Kihara and the creator of the company Masaru Ibuka. It was

Analysts said Sony 's third outlook cut in six months could drive away even the loyalists still
believing in the company 's promise to turn around its flagging consumer–electronics business. The
grim forecast also stands out from Japanese rivals in the electronics industry such as Panasonic Corp
and fujitsu Ltd, which are returning to profit after withdrawing from unprofitable business areas. "It
is another major letdown," said Tomoichiro Kubota, a senior market analyst at online brokerage
Matsui Securities Co. "The contrast is stark with Sony anticipating a bigger loss while other
companies are starting to enjoy the fruits of their restructuring measures," he said. Sony attributed
the guidance cut to about ¥30 billion ($293 million) in extra costs to dispose of its PC business, and
to impairment charges from weaker overseas demand for Blu–ray discs and DVDs. In February, the
company said it expected a ¥110 billion ($1.1 billion) loss to fix its unprofitable PC and television
businesses. Now, it expects a ¥130 billion loss for the year ended in March, even as it raised its
revenue target by a slender 0.9%. As part of its restructuring measures, the company earlier
announced a cut of 5,000 jobs, the sale of its PC business and the split–off of its TV division into a
separate subsidiary. Sony also slashed its full–year operating–profit forecast to ¥26 billion from ¥80

It is interesting to note the underlying ideologies behind these objectives that Sony Corporation has

this work organization was born during the aftermath of the World War II. Mr. Ibuka has pictured
that his company will serve as his contribution for national development, and that technology is the
key to their growth. This is in line with the national advancement that the Japanese government was
aiming at then. How reliable is the very first incorporation objective? In an interview with Mr.

Sony is a pronounced investment opportunity. Sony Corporation has been around since 1946 and has progressively remained a top manufacturer since their start. • 2. PS4 Situational Analysis INTRODUCTION: Sony is a Japan based company that operates in over 180 countries worldwide. (Company Profile for Sony Corporation, 2011) Sony was co–founded by Masaru Ibuka and Aki Miruta in 1946 and since then has grown into an international multimillion dollar company (Sony Corporation, 2014). Ibuka and Miruta originally started out manufacturing measuring equipment (Sony Corporation, 2014), and have expanded into more complex technological solutions, such as laptops, gaming consoles, and communications devices. One product in particular is the PlayStation 4. The PS4 is the most recent of Sony's gaming consoles and since its release at the end of 2013 has sold 7 million units (Plafke, 2013), raking in 45 billion dollars of revenue for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The company is competing with Microsoft in the computer and gaming consoles product area, then with Panasonic in the television and music department and with LG's communications products. A second threat Sony faces relates to most of its production being in Japan. The company is susceptible to a fluctuating currency rate. For example the Japanese Yen has been steadily rising against both the US dollar and the Euro since November 2013 and experienced a 5% increase against the US dollar in December 2013. (OANDA, 2014). This made Sony's imports to these countries from Japan seem relatively more expensive than products made locally. Another threat Sony faces is one relating to the specific product being discussed in this report. Recently the PS4 network was hacked, allowing users' credit card details and other private information to be taken. (MacManus, 2012). Being vulnerable to attacks from hackers is a very big threat for the Sony Corporation. Opportunities: The Sony brand has been given many opportunities. One of these is that Blu–ray is become increasingly more popular, which gives Sony the opportunity to make these players as cheaply and efficiently as they can. A second opportunity is their partnership with the big gaming franchise Fifa. This enhances Sony's corporate value. Weaknesses: One weakness of the Sony Corporation is its location. Almost its entire manufacturing takes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysts said Sony 's third outlook cut in six months could drive away even the loyalists still believing in the company 's promise to turn around its flagging consumer–electronics business. The grim forecast also stands out from Japanese rivals in the electronics industry such as Panasonic Corp and fujitsu Ltd, which are returning to profit after withdrawing from unprofitable business areas. In February, the company said it expected a ¥110 billion ($1.1 billion) loss to fix its unprofitable PC and television businesses. Now, it expects a ¥130 billion loss for the year ended in March, even as it raised its revenue target by a slender 0.9%. As part of its restructuring measures, the company earlier announced a cut of 5,000 jobs, the sale of its PC business and the split–off of its TV division into a separate subsidiary.
