Analysis Of White Log
Adapting
Throughout life, people change a great deal. In many novels, the characters change, they usually
have no idea that they are changing. The characters usually change in different ways. Multiple
characters might change by being ruthless and blackhearted, and then at the end, they are a happy
and cheery character. White Fang and Buck have changed an amazing amount. For example Buck
changed from being a happy, lovable character, to answering the call of the wild. White Fang, went
from being a ruthless, wild beast to a lovable, domesticated character. People could build up
confidence and change without the world ending. White Fang is an amazing novel written by Jack
London. The main character, White Fang, is a ferocious, ruthless wolf. At first, he is not allowed to
go towards the wall of light and when he does, he finds the answers to every one of his curious
wishes. He starts out as a curious little pup, then proceeds to be a curious pup until he meets his first
human. When he gets taken back to camp, Kiche comes to his rescue, but they get taken in instead.
He started hunting with his mother at a young age, and therefore he learned things quicker. He
progressed with his mental age of course, throughout the novel, and had to become an "adult dog" at
a young age to protect his mother and himself. His attitude toward children from the Indian camp to
the time he became a part of Weedon Scott's family, he went through many changes. At Weedon
Scott's house, he knew

My Life And Future Goals In Life
A common statement some might say to someone of my age is: "Anyone under the age of eighteen
cannot possibly experience something that will change their perspective on life; they are simply too
young." Regardless of how old someone is, they can still face experiences that could one day shape
them as a person. I, personally, have participated in an event that has completely impacted my life to
this day, and has helped me discover my future goals in life. This event has made me want to change
the world and I believe has made me a better person. In the summer of 2011, I was given what I
believed was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Since I was a young girl, I only ever wanted to be
around animals, and I dreamt that one day I would be able to be an "animal doctor", as I once called
it. So when my mother told me I would be spending two weeks at the SeaWorld and Busch Gardens
Adventure Camp, I was elated. I would be able to work with animals both large and small and be a
part of the park's conservational efforts. Once I was there, the opportunity felt even more like a
dream. I and other campers participated in activities like sleeping beside beluga whales, swimming
with sharks, and meeting one of the veterinarians at the park. Everything was perfect, it seemed,
until the events at the park began to become a bit 'emotional' so to speak. After the first few days at
SeaWorld Orlando, our camp counselor decided it was time to show us the new additions at the
park. She took us

The Anna Karenina Principle
The Anna Karenina principle is important because it explains "a feature of animal domestication that
had heavy consequences for human history." Specifically how suitable big wild mammals were
never domesticated and most domesticated animals are Eurasian. The Anna Karenina principle
directly applies to domesticating animals because to be domesticated, a species must "possess many
different characteristics," as there must be many characteristics of happiness in the principle.
Diamond states that lack of any characteristic "dooms efforts at domestication." The Anna Karenina
principle applies directly to the domestication of animals, making it relevant in understanding why
some wild animals were not domesticated.
By comparing mutations, one can see that a crop was independently domesticated in separate areas.
This is suggested if a crop includes two or more "alternative wild variants," or mutations. It is
suggested because if the same crop has many different variants, it inherited one particular mutation
from one area and the other mutation was inherited from a different area. This information is
important to tracing the spread of agriculture because it can suggest that a crop spread very quickly
to the surrounding area (one mutation), preventing the need of independently growing the crop
elsewhere. On the other hand, it can also suggest that a crop spread too slow to prevent its
independent domestication elsewhere.
Civilization led to epidemic because as people started to

The Symbolism Of Pearl In The Scarlet Letter
In "The Scarlet Letter" Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne and Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, is
used as a symbol throughout the novel. Pearl is the innocent product of a sin. She has often been
called a demon child due to her mischievous behavior. That comes from the absence of a father
figure. Pearl shows a wildness that none of the citizens of the settlement have ever seen before. She
is very intelligent for her age and she uses that to her advantage. Hester and Pearl are in the
Governor's garden one day where there is a discussion whether little Pearl should be taken from
Hester and given to another family to be raised by, or to remain with Hester. Hester says that she
would die before Pearl be taken from her. This statement shows Hester's

Nelson's Wild Animal Care: Then And Now
Seminar 1
Wild Animal Care: Then and Now was a highly informative lecture that compared the care of wild
animals in the 70's to the care of them today. Professor Nelson described his personal experience
working with wild animals in the 70s.Professor Nelson got a biology major and after college, he
hitchhiked to Alaska where he eventually became a dog catcher. Most of his training was on the job,
learning as he went. This is a common thread throughout Nelson's experiences with animals in the
70's. Things were more laid back then if you wanted to help animals you went and helped animals.
His experiences working for a wildlife rehabilitation center in Georgia was also highly informative.
He rehabilitated a variety of mammals and birds in hope ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The amount of training and knowledge that is needed to work with animals is phenomenal. Gone are
the days when one can learn as they go, and maybe that is a bad thing– but the fact that today there
is so much knowledge and understanding of these animals that there can be countless rulebooks is
proof that society is changing. Society is becoming more aware of the animals need for conservation
and the public is learning how they too can have a positive effect on animals

The Importance Of Imperialism In Joseph Conrad's Heart Of...
It has been argued that humans are mere products of their environment. In the era of imperialism,
artists argued that the nations were breeding grounds for corruption and greed. To illustrate this,
several artists, such as Joseph Conrad, utilized the victimized frontiers to display the injustices that
were happening. Conrad's Heart of Darkness uses the African environment's wildness and symbolic
darkness to demonstrate that imperialism's lack of moral restraints will result in one's environment
exploiting the evils hidden in their heart.
A symbol itself, the Congo River served as a catalyst that carried Marlow's idealistic mindset into
the heart of the dark jungle. In the river, one found that they were "bewildered and cut off from
everything [they] had known once" because the "waterway ran on... into the gloom of overshadowed
distances", which resulted in "moments when one's past came back... in the shape of an unrestful
and noisy dream" (Conrad 61). Marlow's prejudiced mindset against the natives originally presented
an imperialistic mindset of saving subhumans, however, his ideas clashed with an enigma of the
living past, which warped all ideas of reality. The Congo river blurred Marlow's reality to present
the ultimate point that imperialistic enlightenment could not compete with the deep–rooted cultures
of Africa's past. Although Marlow initially took interest in Africa because of its blank space as the
place "where the merry dance of death and trade goes on", he had to

Relation between Pearl and Nature in Nathaniel...
The Relation between Pearl and Nature in The Scarlet Letter
In Nathaniel Hawthorne's work, The Scarlet Letter, nature plays a very symbolic role. Throughout
the book, nature is incorporated into the story line. One example of this is with the character of
Pearl. Pearl is very different than all the other characters due to her special relationship with Nature.
Hawthorne personifies Nature as sympathetic towards sins against the puritan way of life. Hester's
sin causes Nature to accept Pearl.
First it is necessary to examine how nature is identified with sin against the Puritan way of life. The
first example of this is found in the first chapter regarding the rosebush at the prison door. This
rosebush is located "on one side ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This rosebush symbolizes the sympathy of Nature towards the very people Puritan society has
condemned.
The idea illustrated by the rosebush can therefore be applied to the specific character of Pearl.
Because Pearl was expelled from Puritan society Nature sympathizes with her. Nature's sympathy
and partiality with Pearl can be seen with the sunshine in the forest. Pearl attempts to "catch" the
sunshine and according to Hawthorn "Pearl . . . did actually catch the sunshine . . . The light lingered
about the lonely child, as if glad of such a playmate . . ."(146). Hawthorn describes another sign of
acceptance as the "great black forest . . . became the playmate of the lonely infant"(163). Hawthorne
eventually declares that "The truth seems to be . . . that the mother–forest, and these wild things
which it nourished, all recognized a kindred wildness in the human child"(163). All natural things
and Nature accept this little girl who has been thrust out of Puritan society.
A way to strengthen this point is to show Nature's reaction to Hester. The strange thing is that the
sunshine runs from Hester even though it was her sin against the Puritan laws that produced Pearl
who is accepted by the sunshine or Nature. In fact "[the sunshine] runs away and hides itself,
because it is afraid of something on [Hester's] bosom" (146), the Scarlet Letter, which represents
Hester's acceptance of Puritan law and

Cronon's View On Wilderness
However Cronon does acknowledge the positivity associated with the idea of wilderness when he
concludes his argument with an intriguing question: How can we take the positive values we
associate with wilderness and bring them closer to home? I believe that part of the answer to this
question comes from the rhetoric of these vary same 19th Century romantic thinkers who were able
to develop true connections to the landscape around them.
Developing a connection to the landscape was a primary focus of one of the 19th century writers
that Cronon critiques, Henry David Thoreau. In order to understand how Thoreau developed his
ideas on wilderness, it is important to understand the political and economic environment in which
he lived in. At the time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He concludes one of his final chapters of Walden by stating that, "we need the tonic of wildness."
Thoreau believes that there is a quality associated with wild landscapes that humans need in order to
function as a species. Instead of writing about the overpowering experience that we can find in
"untouched" landscapes, Thoreau rather focuses on bringing those experiences back to our home. In
a journal, Thoreau writes that, "It is in vain to dream of a wildness distant from ourselves. There is
none such. It is in the bog in our brain and bowels, the primitive vigor of Nature in us, that inspires
that dream. I shall never find in the wilds of Labrador any greater wildness than in some recess in
Concord, i.e., than I import into it." (J, IX, 43). Thoreau learned about the overpowering and
personal sensory experiences that you can feel in the wilderness and learned that you can bring that
quality of nature back to home and still have the same experience. And I believe that this is the
essential point that Thoreau brings to American culture with Walden. Thoreau wants Americans to
bring this tonic of wildness to everyday life because he believes it is missing and can make their
lives deliberate and fulfilled. Thoreau's overwhelming appreciating of the tonic of wildness is
furthermore important based on the fact that the last passage he writes in Walden

Development of Character in Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses
In a journey across the vast untamed country of Mexico, Cormac McCarthy introduces All the Pretty
Horses, a bittersweet and profoundly moving tale of love, hate, disappointments, joy, and
redemption. John Grady sets out on horseback to Mexico with his best friend Lacey Rawlins in
search of the cowboy lifestyle. His journey leaves John wiser but saddened, yet out of this
heartbreak comes the resilience of a man who has claimed his place in the world as a true cowboy.
In his journey John's character changes and develops throughout the novel to have more of a
personal relationship with the horses and Mother Nature. He changes from a young boy who knows

responsibility associated with running a ranch. Mr. Franklin teaches him to look beyond the fact that
owning a ranch is a not as simple as it might seem especially for a six–teen–year–old boy.
In his journey across the landscape of Mexico, John's character in the novel begins to transform. He
is beginning to move away from that boyish and naive kind of behavior and more towards the
middle stage of between being a boy and a man; adolescence. McCarthy spends a great deal in
describing John's adolescent's stage in this novel. Much of the time that McCarthy describes in this
stage is when they are out on the prairie with the horses connecting with nature. This connection
allows John to have and a clearer understanding that there is a divine line between men and horses
and that you can't apply the same characteristics that you would apply to a horse to a man. In one
instance, after a long day of riding John and Rawlins decide to stop for the night and rest. As he rests
he lays on his back looking, "out where the quartermoon lay cocked over the heel of the mountain's"
the vision of the moon gives the reader a sense of time and how it can be different from time on the
prairie compared to time in a society.. Time on the prairie seems to be "cocked" or suspended in
time, a sense that time

Wildness Of Minoans Essay
But was it a religious ceremony to show mankind's dominance over nature? Shapland's article beats
back this theory that bull–leaping was a way for humans to assert their dominance, strength, and
power over wild bulls. He believes Minoans did not bull–leap–and create representations of these
leaps–due to the tension between man and nature. Nowadays, people have a "tendency to reduce
human–animal relations to human symbolism;" Shapland calls modern scholars to have a broader
view of bull–leaping than of something merely portraying the need of mankind to conquer the
wildness of bulls and the larger world. Moreover, much of the Minoans' other art does not reflect
this tension; rather, for scenes depicting marine life, for example, there are aquatic creatures, not
men with nets and hooks trying to catch them; Minoan art is, for the most part, peaceful. Perhaps,
then, bull–leaping was something celebrated not because it was man conquering beast, but man
working harmoniously alongside the beast.
Minoan culture is steeped in mystery, and scholarly theories swirl around the limited, archeology–
based knowledge we have of these ancient Cretans. The ancient world is a slick and slippery place
for historians due to the lack of records, and we must ultimately admit that we do not and cannot
know the truth of those worlds. We ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Why Should Zoos Be Banned?
The zoo is the place where wild animals are collected for tourist attraction, as there are several
endanger species animals protected from extinction by zookeepers. Some people say zoos are the
safe place for animals to live because they do not have to seek for food to survive, or the zookeeper
can look after them when they suffer from illness, etc. Other people say that zoos are not suitable
habitat for animals to live, as some kinds of animals might be difficult to adapt to new condition. In
order to make a peaceful relationship between human and animal there are two major reasons why
zoo should be banned: they are rarely helping animals from extinction and cause animals' stress
behaviors or lack of freedom.
First of all, wild animals are unlikely to be helped by the zoo, because they were not born to be
caged in the zoo for human's entertainment. Animals are more likely to be used for tourism
attraction for the zoo organization, in another word, zoos are using animals to do their business.
Most of the animals can reproduce their off springs naturally without any chemicals, however, it
does not seem to be like that for some animals in the zoo. Scientists are experimenting new drugs or
new technology of IVF for infertile women (by implant embryo (sperm and egg fertilized) inside a

Abuse Of Animal Domestication
ow are animals in today's world abused and domesticated by humans? Animal domestication
benefits most countries because it helps them farm, grow food, and get materials. In Syria, Asia, and
Europe pigs were utilized more in settled farming communities than in nomadic groups because they
are difficult to move for long distance. One reason animals are domesticated is for their hides and
their fur, which provides materials for shelter. Hides are used in teepees as well, while hair is used
for plaster. Early men relied on bones and hides for tools.
People domesticate animals for a number of reasons, buying and selling them so they can help us

Symbolism In The Veldt By Ray Bradbury
Throughout the years, people think they have gained happiness from their materialistic things. In
this story, Ray Bradbury creates a family that are particularly wealthy through material possessions
and how they become dispersed through the possessions they own. However, in Ray Bradbury's
short story "The Veldt" he emphasizes that utilizing materialistic things can actually result in terrible
harm. Through the use of symbolism, irony, and foreshadowing, Ray Bradbury establishes the idea
that overindulging in materialistic possessions can result in grave consequences. Wendy and Peter
are wild, unruly children, and the African Veldt and its lions are mirroring the wildness of the
children within the wildness of the Veldt land. Bradbury ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bradbury shows that the family lives in a high tech house when he writes, "...this house which
clothed and fed and rocked them to sleep and played and sang and was good to them..." (Bradbury
1) which shows the house does almost anything for this family. The point of this house was for the
house to do all the work so that the time that the parents would be working they could spend with
their children. However, everything changed when the mother said, "Maybe I don't have enough to
do. Maybe I have time to think too much. Why don't we shut the whole house off for a few days and
take a vacation?"(Bradbury 4) which shows that the mother was getting overwhelmed and feeling
like she was completely useless. Once the mother feels this way the parents decide to shut down the
nursery which causes chaos between them and their children when they say, "They screamed and
pranced and threw things. They yelled and sobbed and swore and jumped at the furniture..."
(Bradbury 13) which shows that the family is actually being torn apart because of house/veldt.
Bradbury uses foreshadowing through images of bloody/ torn up wallets and scarfs to hint the
inevitable end result of the parents when they let their children go in the veldt without any
consequences towards the end of the story. In one part of the story The Veldt it says, "An old

Is Turkey The Stupidest Animal In The World
Turkeys are large birds that behave differently from other birds. Their sizes are bigger compared to
most birds and are natives of North America. There are two different kinds of Turkey; domestic and
wild. Wild turkeys are the ones we eat for Thanksgiving or for Christmas. The domestic turkeys are
the ones raised in the farm while the wild ones are found in open forest, grassland and woodlands.
Turkey is a famous meal for western countries especially in Americas. This famous turkey is also
known for acting stupid and dumb. This paper will explain why Turkey is the stupidest organism in
the world.
Domestic turkeys have big boobs, which makes it more appealing for dinner meal. The big boobs
are what make it harder for domestic turkeys to be able to fly. Adult turkeys have approximately

staring at the sky. Although this myth is wrong it was made up due to how stupid turkey is. When
Turkey hears the rainstorm or thunderstorm, it just stands still and stares to see if it can what is
making the noise. In this process, it tilts its head to hear the sound better and that help it know where
the sound is coming from which is very stupid. Another weird thing about turkey is that the head
changes color to red when it is excited. The head of turkey can change to the color of red, brown,
white, yellow, blue and black based on its mood. When other animals are excited about something
they make noise or run around but in the case of turkey, it changes to

Henry David Thoreau's In Wildness Is The Preservation Of...
Humans have adopted a need to control instead of survive creating a separation from dependence on
the wild which is the very thing we depend most on, thus resulting in destroying the wilderness and
wildness of nature. This separation is not a mere physical separation; the drive to control creates this
illusion of connection. For example, in Jack Turner's essay, In Wildness Is the Preservation of the
World, he explores this idea through analyzing Henry David Thoreau's essay Walking. Turner states
"human beings no longer accept their status as "part and parcel" of a biological realm that is self–
willed, self–determined, self–ordered. Instead we have divided ourselves from that realm and make
every attempt to control it for our own interest." As a society, have we have become too dependent
on what we can make in a factory or lab rather than seeking the solutions in nature? The wilderness
is a place we should use to understand ourselves and our existences, doing this we regain respect for
the wild and with that the ecosystems that sustain our lives.
What readers should understand is that "wild" is described by Henry David Thoreau as past
participle of: to will, self– willed. In other words, self–organized and the opposite of controlled.
Getting to the root of the word, "wildness" seemed to be the first step toward understanding how it
preserves the world. We live in a culture today that is obsessed with productivity and efficiency in
an attempt to create a false sense of

society and nature. Two of the main characters, Jack and Ralph, fight for leadership over the other
boys because of their conflicting natures: Ralph rules by an idea of peace instilled in him by the
influence of society's rules in his life, whereas Jack resorts to a primitive form of evil and torture
which is kindled by his isolation on an island of no definitive rules. In chapter one, the boys decide
to choose a leader. Ralph grabs their loyalty and attention of the others with his authoritative manner
and optimistic plans for the future. Throughout the story, the boys seem to drift away from his

when they needed it badly, as in just before a storm or other extreme weather. As long as the activity
is simple and fast, the boys are eager to help. Jack's seemingly savage actions, such as questioning
Samneric so harshly, were necessary in that setting. Ralph never disciplined the boys for not doing

Why Do Exotic Animals Be Kept As Pets
Not Allowing Exotic Animals to be kept as Pets Throughout humanity there has been an unstable
number of exotic animals to the world. To the point of where people started thinking it would be
smart to keep them as pets. For example, such as a snake, tiger, or a giraffe. Most people have
common sense enough to know those types of animals are not meant to belong as a pet. But there
are a few people who think differently. Exotic animals do not stay cute and adorable forever. Most
of the people fail to realize that the animals "seem innocent when young but grow into problematic

one's that may not even be known to a man yet. The only way to knowing if the animal has a disease
is to be bite by it, and after that it is probably going to be too late to do anything about it then. One is
at very high risk of contracting a disease while keeping a wild animal around. Furthermore, it is
illegal to keep these types of animals, to a certain extent. It is mainly illegal to keep them in one's
possession without precise paper and license to do so. One will be fined highly if caught with an
exotic animal without the correct papers that allow the animal to be in a human's care. Allowing
exotic animals into one's home is a safety hazard to the public, that one should

Scarlet Letter Imperfection
Imperfection Nathaniel Hawthorne is an Anti–transcendentalist and writes in the time period of
1600s in New England, during puritanism in his novel, The Scarlet Letter. In his novel, The Scarlet
Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the symbolism of the Wild Rose–bush, Pearl, and the Forest and
Sunlight to contribute to the overall theme of imperfection. The Wild Rose–bush means there is a
wild, dark and beautiful side to everyone and everything. Pearl shows that although you were born
into darkness, it doesn't mean that you can't be good or pure. The Forest and Sunlight shows that
you can be evil or do bad and be wild, and still have goodness and purity in you. Hester is Pearl's
mother who committed adultery with Pearl's father, Dimmesdale, while married to his best friend
and doctor, Chillingworth. Dimmesdale is Pearl's father and a minister/Priester. To begin,
Hawthorne uses the Wild Rose–bush to contribute to the theme of good and evil. The rose on the
rose–bush stands for good and beauty, the thorns stand for evil, darkness, and pain. The wildness of
the rose–bush represents the wildness that is inside of everyone. Hawthorne explains, "...to
symbolize some sweet moral blossom...or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and
sorrow" (Hawthorne 46). This quote shows that a Wild Rose–bush is beautiful, but with the beauty,
there are thorns, which are dark and painful, just like Hester. As the book continues, the Wild Rose–
bush sits right outside of the prison,

Summary Of Slavery In Toni Morrison's Beloved
In the novel Beloved by Toni Morrison, the social, personal, and political cruelty of American
slavery is the central factor driving the story. The method of cruelty most prominent in Beloved is
the belittling of slaves at the hands of those with privileged identities, which ultimately reveals that
the victims in the novel are each on their own personal quests to reclaim their own identities. Within
the novel, Morrison utilizes animalistic language that contributes to the meaning of the work as a
whole; that one's identity can be destroyed when victim to a form of cruelty known as
dehumanization. One of the most notable moments in which Morrison uses language related to

once saying "[Sethe] thought it would be enough, rutting among headstones with the engraver, his
young son looking on, the anger in his face so old; the appetite in it quite new" (5). A key aspect to
this graphic scene is the nature of the son and his father who both contribute to the cruel
dehumanization of Sethe. Morrison creates a sense of spectatorship, as if Sethe was just an object to
peer at, by describing the son as "looking on." Furthermore, the engravers apparent "anger" and
"appetite" immediately invoke a dynamic of a predator seeking out its prey as those two words
indicate an animalistic, instinctual

Do Animals Enjoy The Circus Like Us?
Do Animals Enjoy the Circus Like Us? "The wild, cruel animal is not behind the bars of cage. He is
in front of it"–Munthe, Axel 1857. Animals have been used in circuses for generations around the
world. You will never find monkeys dance waltz, bears ride bicycles, or tigers jump through burning
hoops in the wild. Circuses have broken the law of nature. Circus performers collect money easily
by using animal to do stupid tricks and they even do not take care of them properly. Animals should
live in cramped cages and travel in the dark cold trailer. That's why I think using animals as
entertainment in the circus should be forbidden. You may laugh while enjoying animals performance

According to teenink.com, during training session, trainers are often use whips, tight collars,
muzzles, electric prods, bullhooks and other painful tools to force animals learn tricks. Trainers drug
some animals to make them "manageable" and surgically remove the teeth and claws of others
(Ashley Palmer, 2016). As well as using direct physical contact to make the animals learn tricks,
they are often forced to go without food and water for prolonged periods when they haven't
performed well during training sessions, as well as during travel periods. Eventhough it's clear that
animals training in circus is cruel, but some people think animals circus can be a chance for children
to see wild animals that they may never see again and learn about animals. But I think this is the
wrong way to learn about animals for children.
So now we know that how suffer is animals live in the circus. They have the same right to live like
human's because we are the same life creatures in the same world. Using animals as entertainment in

Symbolism In The Veldt By Ray Bradbury
Family not Tragedy Throughout the years, people think they have gained happiness from their
materialistic things. In this story, Ray Bradbury creates a family that is particularly wealthy through
material possessions and how they become dispersed through the possessions they own. However, in
Ray Bradbury's short story "The Veldt" he emphasizes that utilizing materialistic things can actually
result in terrible harm. Through the use of symbolism, irony, and foreshadowing, Ray Bradbury
establishes the idea that overindulging in materialistic possessions can result in grave consequences.

(Bradbury 13) which shows that the family has actually been torn apart because of house/veldt.
Bradbury uses foreshadowing through images of bloody wallets and scarfs to hint the inevitable end
result of the parents when they let their children go in the veldt without any consequences towards
the end of the story. In one part of the story The Veldt it says, "An

The Desert Is No Place For A Man And Cormac Mccarthy
The desert is no place for a man and Cormac McCarthy makes that perfectly clear from the onset of
Blood Meridian. At first, it's hard to tell which will be more desolate and brutal: the environment or
the men that traverse it. However, McCarthy initially seems to establish that unbridled nature will
triumph over man every time regardless of the circumstance. If nature is God, then man is hopeless
to stand against it. Yet McCarthy makes an important distinction between nature as it exists in the
wild and nature that has been tamed by man. Although a lot of his depiction of nature comes from
the landscape, he uses animals in a telling way to prove a larger point: nature is only so powerful
until it is conquered by men. It is an obvious approach to look at the ways in which the landscape
and the desert environment domineer over the gang of men throughout the novel. Less obvious, and
at the same time, painfully overt, is the role that wild animals take within the framework of the
story. The Judge is quoted as saying that God "speaks in stones and trees, the bones of things" (116)
and the overall understanding of this message is that god resides in nature; the force of nature is the
force of god.
This force is seen clearly the first time someone in the band is attacked by a bear. The first
compelling part in this scene is the way the men's horses react to the bear. One horse was described
as "falling backward and [the Delaware] was trying to turn it, beating it about the head

Ecotones: The Wolf That Changed America
From the beginning of human civilization to the present wild animals have caused issues in
ecotones. An ecotone is the place where two different types of communities meet. In this paper, I
will be talking about the ecotones of human civilization and wildlife. People that hike and bike trails
in Durango, Colorado often run into animals that are not afraid of people. In this essay the topics
that will be discussed that relate to human and wildlife relationships in an ecotone are, the history of
human–wild animal interaction, problems associated with this interaction, and issues with wild
animals in ecotones. The Wolf That Changed America, released by PBS Nature on November 22,
2008, discussed how in 1892–1893 a bounty hunter named Ernest Thompson Seton, journeyed out
into New Mexico where the lands are untamed. He was hired to kill a dangerous wild animal, a
wolf, named Lobo. Lobo was a legend to the ranchers who ran cattle in the northern part of the state.
The ranchers wanted Lobo gone as he was patrolling the pasture where the cattle ate and ran. Each
day the ranchers noticed that they were losing cattle and they knew which animal was responsible

Analysis Of H Is For Hawk, By Helen Macdonald
In Helen Macdonald's memoir, H is for Hawk, she explores her journey of grief and recovery
following the death of her father and how a goshawk and the wildness it embodies allows her to
rediscover herself and restore her own humanity. In the very first chapter Macdonald takes time to
assert her opinion of the sanctity and power of the wild, a world separate from and yet connected to
our own, very much like the land of Faery from Gaelic and later English mythologies. To
Macdonald the wild is a place and a presence that is both alien and familiar. Macdonald hunts down
these places that to her seem to be more deeply connected to that force, wildness within and beyond
all things. Macdonald relishes in these places' beauty, as her father had taught ... Show more content

Macdonald experiences a near prophetic realization that she requires a goshawk and by intense
impulse she purchases a goshawk from a man in Scotland over the internet, having immediately
become enthralled by the grace and beauty of the bird the man puts on display, and spends all her
time training it, and finally reveling in the sight of the hawk in flight, losing herself in the righteous
fury of a predator at work. She thinks of herself less and less as a part of humanity, stating a feeling
of disconnect and alienness with other people and society at large being much more comfortable
hunting with her hawk. Macdonald begins to associate more closely with the hawk than with people,
believing herself to be turning into a hawk at some personal level, "Hunting with the hawk took me
to the very edge of being human. Then it took me past that place to somewhere I wasn't human at
all," (195). Macdonald fancies herself a changeling born of another world, the world of man being
nothing but a place of discomfort and pain, she sees her only chance at a reprieve to return to a place
of swaying trees and impenetrable fog where goshawks rule the sky, where wildness dwells and
reigns supreme. In this sense Macdonald's hobby is far more than just a hobby to her, she at some
level believes that this distance between her and other people, and her obsession with Mabel is all a
part of her healing process, of some unspoken, unknowable ritual in which the wild will encapsulate
all that she is and remove her from pain and

Essay Zoos and Aquariums: A Barbaric Institution
The practice of keeping wild animals in a zoo or aquarium is looked at favorably in most aspects but
what we fail to realize is that we have placed animals which at one point lived freely in wide open
spaces into captivity. Society is assuming these animals are happy to be taken from their natural
habitat and placed in pens and cages because they have every need handed to them. David Suzuki
asked "What gives us the right to exploit other living organisms as we see fit?" (681). Through
selfishness, people have justified zoos and aquariums to be an educational benefit to children, to
help them learn about animals, their individuality and where they come from. Zoos and Aquariums

Zoos do not have the decency to give their captives free run of their trees. Animals being held in
captivity develop aggressive behavior. Captive is defined as "captured; held prisoner" (Captive). On
25 December 2007 a 350–pound "Siberian Tiger escaped from its grotto at the San Francisco
Zoo...and went on a bloody rampage in front of terrified zoo patrons" (Rubenstein A–1). That same
tiger chewed a zoo keepers arm during a scheduled feeding one month prior. In January 2011, in
"Knoxville, Tennessee, an 8,000–pound elephant crushed a zookeeper to death inside a cage"
(Venezia). In Scottsbluff, Nebraska "a zookeeper...had two fingers bitten off in an attack by two
chimpanzees" (Caulfield). Animals in captivity did not willingly choose to be there. No guest would
attack their host if they were in the zoo of their own free will. Animals that turn aggressive towards
their trainers or keepers are not in the purest since of the word, happy. If an animal were happy in
captivity, they would possess no reason to attack. Keeping wild animals in captivity shortens their
natural life span. In the wild, dolphins can live 40 years but when held in captivity, they rarely
survive their teens. In the wild Orcas can live 90 years but when held in captivity the average age is
nine years. Twenty–three out of twenty–five Orcas have died in captivity. "Approximately 157

What three advantages of Rome's location does Cicero mention? Rome had three main assets that
other cities didn't have. One, Rome was surrounded by land on all sides, which means enemies
could be seen coming from all directions with plenty of advanced notice. Secondly, the geography
around Rome gave the city another advantage. There were steep hills around all side and the only
entrance is above a deep ditch making it extremely hard for enemies to enter. Thirdly, the hills
offered the city a breeze and provided shade from the hot sun. 3. Why do you think geography is
such a important factor in the devolvement of cities? Geography is very important when expanding

Animals Are Dogs And Cats
Most people are families with domesticated animals as pets. The most common pets are dogs and
cats. However, some people want to own exotic animals instead of normal animals. They pick what
they want, but they actually don't pay attention to an outcome later. There have three outcomes that
people should not own exotic animals which are bad for animals, bad for owners, and bad for
environment. In the Steps to Writing Well textbook by Jean Wyrick, there has an article that supports
people who adopt wild animals and the name is Zuana Kukol's Opposing View: Let People Own
Exotic Animals. Based on that, the author gives a message that people should be allowed to adopt
any animals because it helps animals stay away from extinction, everybody should have freedom to
pick any species of wild, and exotic animals have low numbers of harmful per year. This is also a
way to eliminate extinction because exotic animals are captive animals, so they will be backup when
animals go extinct. Moreover, the article shows the record of fatalities per year by captive animals
only around four people per year. Meanwhile, traffic accidents are around one hundred per day. The
writer also supports with emphasis sentences at the end on why people have the freedom to pick
their favorite car but not animals. To sum up, the author writes this article because of supporting
people who want to own exotic animals as pets. First of all, owning wild animals as pets is a bad
decision for animals' life later on.

Persuasive Speech : Attention Getter For Animal Rights
Alex Villa
Professor Chen
GEO 102
16 November 2017
General Purpose: To Persuade
Topic: Animal rights
Purpose Formula: To persuade my fellow classmates, who are consumers of animal based products
and supporters of zoos and wildlife conservation efforts, that animals deserve the same rights as
humans and should not be used for profit.
1. Attention Step
A. Attention Getter: Imagine living in a space about a third the size of this room. You also share this
space with 3 other people. This is what animals deal with when living in zoos and aquariums.
B. Significance of Topic: Many of us are probably wondering how this is morally acceptable in our
society or how this is even legal.
C. Speaker Credibility: After countless research, I've come across many stories about the ethics and
morality of animal captivity in order to share with you facts and information about this topic.
D. Preview of Main Points:
First, I will share with you the physical and mental effects of animals in institutions such as zoos
and Sea World.
Second, I will share how releasing these animals into wildlife reserves are for their own benefit.
Lastly, I will show you how you could make a difference.
2. Problem Step (Showing a Need)
A. Simple Statement of Problem: Animals being kept in zoos and aquariums are negatively affecting
their physical and mental health.
Statistic: 54% of elephants in the UK showed mental illness symptoms 48% of lions spend most of
their time pacing, which is seen as a recognized behavioral problem. (Caps, 2010). B. Illustration:
An animal's mental illness can be shown in a wide variety of ways.
Example: For example birds will excessively pluck out their feathers and chimpanzees will pull out
their own hair. (Dasgupta, 2015). C. Ramifications: The consequences of captivity is not limited to
only mental or physical illness, it can also be fatal.
Expert Testimony: 40% of lion cubs die before one month of age. In the wild, only 30% of cubs are
thought to die before they are six months old and at least a third of those deaths are due to factors
which are absent in zoos, like predation. (CAPS, 2010). D. Pointing: A polar bear in the central park
zoo now has the nickname bipolar bear, due to

What Is The Purpose Of Animals In Entertainment
Animals in Entertainment When people think of going to the circus, the first thing that they usually
think of is seeing animals doing amazing tricks that they wish their family cat or dog could do. The
thing that most people do not know, is that these animals are being treated very cruelly so that circus
owners can make money off of people coming to see these animals in action. All over the world,
animals are being used for the purpose of human entertainment. When going to the circus, most
people never stop and think about what really is happening to the animals featured in this form of
entertainment. Some people may even think that these animals are living a great life, they are always
being taken care of by humans, they have a place to live, and they never have to worry about
predators or finding their own prey. The truth is, the animals that are being utilized for the purpose
of human entertainment are living horrible lives and are not suited to live in the environments that
they are being placed in. Humans who are surrounding themselves with these animals also are
putting themselves in severe danger. The animals that are part of the circus are not supposed to be in
captivity, they are supposed to be living in the wild where they are able to fight and fend for
themselves, not depend on others to survive. Eventually, an animal's natural instincts will come out,
forcing the animal to want to attack and harm someone. What is worst about taking animals into
captivity, is

In this case the father loses Beauty not out of love but out of his own weakness of addiction
gambling. As she strips away the petals of the flower, it symbolizes her stripping away the outer

nakedness, and foreshadows the metamorphosis at the story's end. The Beast has a mask–like face
like the Marquis. Beauty explained the mask to be too perfect for human nature and could barely fit
the Beast face. Poor relationship with her father, the heroine here has more pride and anger than
Beauty. Like the other female protagonists, this heroine is initially treated as an object to be
manipulated and gambled away. The Beast in this version is associated with a tiger, a reminder of
the heroine's mother in "The Bloody Chamber." He also lives on a threshold between the worlds of
wild animals and humans. The heroine's longing for the wild innocence of horses prefigures her later
transformation. The symbol of the rose begins to grow more complex here. It is not just a symbol of
the heroine's purity and virginity, as it also has thorns – showing the pain of her objectification, but
also her own fierceness and pride. The Erl–King will return in a later story as another
"metamorphic" figure who controls the wind and captures young women. Carter muses on the nature
of her "beasts," how there is a horror in living life on the threshold, but also that there is a kind of
beastliness that is internal as well as external. This is another picture of decaying luxury, but the
state of The Beast's mansion implies that he has let his wild animal nature take over, and he has little
care for keeping up the appearances of a nobleman. Carter never fully describes her "beasts,"
allowing them to inhabit a fantastic world where a tiger could really

Afro-American Wildness Of Nature
By separating slaves from the land, white culture protected its rights to ownership and citizenship.
However, the connection was fragmented, not damaged. Even if Sweet Home detained natural
beauty, the slaves living there were quite familiar with the 'wildness' of nature. As a child, Sethe
remembers her mother how "she'd had the bit so many times she smiled" (Beloved 203). Similarly is
a human attributed and the opposite of it signifies inhumanity of whites and non–humanness of
blacks. Her mouth becomes everlastingly imperfect from 'the bit', marking an animal intended for
work. Dixon remarks on how "slaves knew that as chattel they were considered part of the property
and wilds of nature, which a smoothly functioning plantation could restrain" (17). ... Show more

He becomes 'less than' because the chicken has the opportunity to sit 'in the sun' and enjoy it,

American bonding to nature is represented as slaves were put on the similar level as nature because
both could be owned. Afro–Americans were 'chattels' and experienced less freedom than the
plantations' animals living and gazing around them. Sethe witnesses the portrayal of slaves as
animals when she looks at one of schoolteacher's lessons. One of his students in particular studies
Sethe and the schoolteacher instructs him to "put her human characteristics on the left; her animal
ones on the right. And don't forget to line them up" (193). Anxious by the lesson, Sethe eventually

Man Vs Nature in Yann Martel's Life of Pi Essay

we have yet learned to ask." To man, nature can be manipulated and overrun easily but it is not
easily destroyed permanently. In Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Pi convinces himself he has altered the
beastly nature of his tiger companion, Richard Parker, however, he fails to realize this as a
misconception until the certain events with Richard Parker that ultimately revealing that the savage

instincts. His ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being more comfortable around such a beast, however, later proves to be a fault of Pi's. The
unpredictable behavior of such a wild animal causes a huge threat to Pi. Richard Parker exemplifies
this wild behavior by "bursting over the ridge at full gallop...coming [Pi's] way high speed" (Martel
263). Pi describes this event as a "rapid and direct approach of a known killer" which casts a
different image of Richard Parker than the previous seemingly harmless companion (Martel 236).
Pi's reaction to his fear is using his method of whistle which causes more anger within Richard
Parker. Richard Parker's unexpected reaction to the training method proves how capricious a
personality of an animal is. Thus, attempted taming of a wild animal was merely a distant goal Pi
thought he had accomplished.
The violent outbreak of Richard Parker, along with his silent departure at the end of the novel,
portrays how futile it is to try to change a wild animal into a civilized being. Richard Parker seems,
at first, to have experienced a spiritual breakthrough and transformation after Pi's attempt to training.
Even in the end, Pi's ability to survive such a journey with a beastly killer seems evidence enough
that Pi trained the tiger. Pi's main goal, along with survival, is to establish a level of equality
between himself

Zean Alvarez Analysis
5. What does the term wildness means to Zoe, Henry, and Will? To you? "He knows he's one of us."
P.240 I believe that this quote told by Zoe that shows that she thinks wildness is defined as unusual.
The reason I think this is because she says " he's one of us". " One of us" is relating to their family.
Their family is very unusual. Zoe raising herself, Henry disappearing from being a heart doctor to
being an artist, Wil being her unknown brother that she never knew about, and so on. I also believe
that Zoe's term of wildness is unusual because when she made that statue and they called it the "
Wild Thing". The cat, in his perspective, explained that it resemble her. If she and Henry know that
the statute resemble her they were exclaiming that she is a Wild Thing, and she has wildness inside
of her. Therefore, I believe that Zoe thinks the term wildness means unusual. " I huddled up to
Henry and thought of the beautiful sculpture he'd given me for Christmas–––the one that had spoken
to me that day in his studio–––saying it was for all the holidays and birthdays he'd missed. He'd call
it Wild Thing, set it right in the front yard." P.228 I believe that in this quote when Henry was

want them over. For example, the quote up above, you can tell that Zoe wanted to leave. I think it

hurt animals mentally, and physically. For example, if Zoe had been tame towards the cat, the cat
would have never accepted her into her life. Zoe wasn't tame and was wild towards the cat and never
gave up. If you were tame the first time you begged the cat, you would've gave up. Animals need
someone to take care of them. If it wasn't Zoe's wildness the cat could've died. Therefore, too much

Essay about Nature and Humanity, a Comparison of Poems
When humans and nature come together, they either coexist harmoniously because nature's
inhabitants and humans share a mutual respect and understanding for each other, or they clash
because humans attempt to control and force their ways of life on nature. The poems, "The Bull
Moose" by Alden Nowlan, "The Panther" by Rainer Maria Rilke, "Walking the Dog" by Howard
Nemerov, and "The Fish" by Elizabeth Bishop, describe what happens when humans and nature
come together. I believe that when humans and nature come together they either clash and conflict
because individuals destroy and attempt to control nature, which is a reflection of their powerful
need to control themselves, or humans live peacefully with nature because not only do they ... Show

When the townspeople encounter the moose, they treat him as though he was their property because
they attempt to control and overpower the moose. For example, Nowlan uses the image of the men

moose. Although this image illustrates how humans are able to control the moose, I believe the use
of the word "pry" suggests that this control was not easy, but was rather hard and difficult, which
further suggests the idea that the moose and the townspeople are clashing rather than blending
together. I believe this situation suggests that humanity and nature will continue to clash because
humans believe that they are superior to nature, and therefore, they view nature as something they
can control and exploit. In addition, this situation reflects humanity's powerful need to control
themselves because the townspeople believe that by controlling the moose, they are able to keep not
only the moose's wild nature under control, but also they are able to control the wildness inside of
themselves. Nowlan further illustrates the townspeople's attempt to incorporate the wild moose into
their society when he uses a simile to compare the moose to a "tolerant old collie." This comparison

Animal Cruelty is becoming a very large problem that needs to be taken care of. Animal Cruelty is
largely in certain "activities", such as circuses, dog shows, dog fighting, and even zoos. Although
people find this to be entertaining, interesting, and something out of the ordinary, it is still
something that is causing harm to these animals and needs to be stopped. These "wild" animals are
still animals, animals that have feelings, ones that don't deserve to be tortured. How would you feel

hours after Konwiser died." (Milian Jorge)
Granted, a lot of these animals are born in captivity and wouldn't be able to survive on their own.
That also means that their parents were taken out of the wild and put into captivity, or that they are
breeding these animals. Which is also a very bad thing for these poor animals. "For starters, Hanna
said that "98 percent" of animals kept at more than 200 zoos across the United States were born in
captivity and would find it impossible to live on their own. "They don't come from the wild," Hanna
said." (Milian

How Does Julius Caesar Change
The past actions and experiences of political leaders greatly impact their election and their
acceptance into the community that the role over. Mistakes of people in the public eye are frequently
acknowledged. However, sometime those impacted by the person that has their flaws disclosed
accept them because of more recent behaviors. Yet, some people do not believe that people can or
will change. In William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, the power to rule the Roman Empire eventually
transfers to Mark Antony, who was a well known politician who has a background of partying, after
Caesar dies. Rome is in good hands with Antony having power that he can responsibly and
respectfully use due to his personal transitions throughout the play. Antony begins ... Show more

Cassius adds in his opinions into the conversation by saying that he thinks it is not meet Mark
Antony, so well beloved of Caesar, Should outlive Caesar. We shall find of him A shrewd contriver.
And, you know, his means, If he improve them, may well stretch so far As to annoy us all; which to
prevent, Let Antony and Caesar fall together(2.1.167–173) To the other politicians at this time, he is
considered to be different because of his strong mutual bond and respect for Caesar. Antony was not
part of the conspiracy so he is kept in oblivion. This causes him to find out from others what sort of
planning had taken place to end his friend, and leader's, life. Without hearing the news directly from
the conspiracy with an explanation from the beginning, he is more likely to be in shock and act more
drastically. As a result Antony is a concern to Cassius because of the connections that Antony has
and could possibly use against the conspiracy in retaliation toward those stab Caesar. He is not
trusted to avoid any violence in relation to the conspirators because of his strong loyalty to Caesar.
Additionally, Antony's dedication to Caesar allows him to offer a monarchy role to Caesar, which
causes the conspirators to have enough evidence of a monarchy starting to kill Caesar before it could
happen.

Analysis Of White Log

  • 1. Analysis Of White Log Adapting Throughout life, people change a great deal. In many novels, the characters change, they usually have no idea that they are changing. The characters usually change in different ways. Multiple characters might change by being ruthless and blackhearted, and then at the end, they are a happy and cheery character. White Fang and Buck have changed an amazing amount. For example Buck changed from being a happy, lovable character, to answering the call of the wild. White Fang, went from being a ruthless, wild beast to a lovable, domesticated character. People could build up confidence and change without the world ending. White Fang is an amazing novel written by Jack London. The main character, White Fang, is a ferocious, ruthless wolf. At first, he is not allowed to go towards the wall of light and when he does, he finds the answers to every one of his curious wishes. He starts out as a curious little pup, then proceeds to be a curious pup until he meets his first human. When he gets taken back to camp, Kiche comes to his rescue, but they get taken in instead. He started hunting with his mother at a young age, and therefore he learned things quicker. He progressed with his mental age of course, throughout the novel, and had to become an "adult dog" at a young age to protect his mother and himself. His attitude toward children from the Indian camp to the time he became a part of Weedon Scott's family, he went through many changes. At Weedon Scott's house, he knew ... • 2. My Life And Future Goals In Life A common statement some might say to someone of my age is: "Anyone under the age of eighteen cannot possibly experience something that will change their perspective on life; they are simply too young." Regardless of how old someone is, they can still face experiences that could one day shape them as a person. I, personally, have participated in an event that has completely impacted my life to this day, and has helped me discover my future goals in life. This event has made me want to change the world and I believe has made me a better person. In the summer of 2011, I was given what I believed was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Since I was a young girl, I only ever wanted to be around animals, and I dreamt that one day I would be able to be an "animal doctor", as I once called it. So when my mother told me I would be spending two weeks at the SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Adventure Camp, I was elated. I would be able to work with animals both large and small and be a part of the park's conservational efforts. Once I was there, the opportunity felt even more like a dream. I and other campers participated in activities like sleeping beside beluga whales, swimming with sharks, and meeting one of the veterinarians at the park. Everything was perfect, it seemed, until the events at the park began to become a bit 'emotional' so to speak. After the first few days at SeaWorld Orlando, our camp counselor decided it was time to show us the new additions at the park. She took us ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Anna Karenina Principle The Anna Karenina principle is important because it explains "a feature of animal domestication that had heavy consequences for human history." Specifically how suitable big wild mammals were never domesticated and most domesticated animals are Eurasian. The Anna Karenina principle directly applies to domesticating animals because to be domesticated, a species must "possess many different characteristics," as there must be many characteristics of happiness in the principle. Diamond states that lack of any characteristic "dooms efforts at domestication." The Anna Karenina principle applies directly to the domestication of animals, making it relevant in understanding why some wild animals were not domesticated. By comparing mutations, one can see that a crop was independently domesticated in separate areas. This is suggested if a crop includes two or more "alternative wild variants," or mutations. It is suggested because if the same crop has many different variants, it inherited one particular mutation from one area and the other mutation was inherited from a different area. This information is important to tracing the spread of agriculture because it can suggest that a crop spread very quickly to the surrounding area (one mutation), preventing the need of independently growing the crop elsewhere. On the other hand, it can also suggest that a crop spread too slow to prevent its independent domestication elsewhere. Civilization led to epidemic because as people started to ... • 4. The Symbolism Of Pearl In The Scarlet Letter In "The Scarlet Letter" Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne and Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, is used as a symbol throughout the novel. Pearl is the innocent product of a sin. She has often been called a demon child due to her mischievous behavior. That comes from the absence of a father figure. Pearl shows a wildness that none of the citizens of the settlement have ever seen before. She is very intelligent for her age and she uses that to her advantage. Hester and Pearl are in the Governor's garden one day where there is a discussion whether little Pearl should be taken from Hester and given to another family to be raised by, or to remain with Hester. Hester says that she would die before Pearl be taken from her. This statement shows Hester's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Nelson's Wild Animal Care: Then And Now Seminar 1 Wild Animal Care: Then and Now was a highly informative lecture that compared the care of wild animals in the 70's to the care of them today. Professor Nelson described his personal experience working with wild animals in the 70s.Professor Nelson got a biology major and after college, he hitchhiked to Alaska where he eventually became a dog catcher. Most of his training was on the job, learning as he went. This is a common thread throughout Nelson's experiences with animals in the 70's. Things were more laid back then if you wanted to help animals you went and helped animals. His experiences working for a wildlife rehabilitation center in Georgia was also highly informative. He rehabilitated a variety of mammals and birds in hope ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The amount of training and knowledge that is needed to work with animals is phenomenal. Gone are the days when one can learn as they go, and maybe that is a bad thing– but the fact that today there is so much knowledge and understanding of these animals that there can be countless rulebooks is proof that society is changing. Society is becoming more aware of the animals need for conservation and the public is learning how they too can have a positive effect on animals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Importance Of Imperialism In Joseph Conrad's Heart Of... It has been argued that humans are mere products of their environment. In the era of imperialism, artists argued that the nations were breeding grounds for corruption and greed. To illustrate this, several artists, such as Joseph Conrad, utilized the victimized frontiers to display the injustices that were happening. Conrad's Heart of Darkness uses the African environment's wildness and symbolic darkness to demonstrate that imperialism's lack of moral restraints will result in one's environment exploiting the evils hidden in their heart. A symbol itself, the Congo River served as a catalyst that carried Marlow's idealistic mindset into the heart of the dark jungle. In the river, one found that they were "bewildered and cut off from everything [they] had known once" because the "waterway ran on... into the gloom of overshadowed distances", which resulted in "moments when one's past came back... in the shape of an unrestful and noisy dream" (Conrad 61). Marlow's prejudiced mindset against the natives originally presented an imperialistic mindset of saving subhumans, however, his ideas clashed with an enigma of the living past, which warped all ideas of reality. The Congo river blurred Marlow's reality to present the ultimate point that imperialistic enlightenment could not compete with the deep–rooted cultures of Africa's past. Although Marlow initially took interest in Africa because of its blank space as the place "where the merry dance of death and trade goes on", he had to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Relation between Pearl and Nature in Nathaniel... The Relation between Pearl and Nature in The Scarlet Letter In Nathaniel Hawthorne's work, The Scarlet Letter, nature plays a very symbolic role. Throughout the book, nature is incorporated into the story line. One example of this is with the character of Pearl. Pearl is very different than all the other characters due to her special relationship with Nature. Hawthorne personifies Nature as sympathetic towards sins against the puritan way of life. Hester's sin causes Nature to accept Pearl. First it is necessary to examine how nature is identified with sin against the Puritan way of life. The first example of this is found in the first chapter regarding the rosebush at the prison door. This rosebush is located "on one side ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This rosebush symbolizes the sympathy of Nature towards the very people Puritan society has condemned. The idea illustrated by the rosebush can therefore be applied to the specific character of Pearl. Because Pearl was expelled from Puritan society Nature sympathizes with her. Nature's sympathy and partiality with Pearl can be seen with the sunshine in the forest. Pearl attempts to "catch" the sunshine and according to Hawthorn "Pearl . . . did actually catch the sunshine . . . The light lingered about the lonely child, as if glad of such a playmate . . ."(146). Hawthorn describes another sign of acceptance as the "great black forest . . . became the playmate of the lonely infant"(163). Hawthorne eventually declares that "The truth seems to be . . . that the mother–forest, and these wild things which it nourished, all recognized a kindred wildness in the human child"(163). All natural things and Nature accept this little girl who has been thrust out of Puritan society. A way to strengthen this point is to show Nature's reaction to Hester. The strange thing is that the sunshine runs from Hester even though it was her sin against the Puritan laws that produced Pearl who is accepted by the sunshine or Nature. In fact "[the sunshine] runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on [Hester's] bosom" (146), the Scarlet Letter, which represents Hester's acceptance of Puritan law and ... • 8. Cronon's View On Wilderness However Cronon does acknowledge the positivity associated with the idea of wilderness when he concludes his argument with an intriguing question: How can we take the positive values we associate with wilderness and bring them closer to home? I believe that part of the answer to this question comes from the rhetoric of these vary same 19th Century romantic thinkers who were able to develop true connections to the landscape around them. Developing a connection to the landscape was a primary focus of one of the 19th century writers that Cronon critiques, Henry David Thoreau. In order to understand how Thoreau developed his ideas on wilderness, it is important to understand the political and economic environment in which he lived in. At the time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He concludes one of his final chapters of Walden by stating that, "we need the tonic of wildness." Thoreau believes that there is a quality associated with wild landscapes that humans need in order to function as a species. Instead of writing about the overpowering experience that we can find in "untouched" landscapes, Thoreau rather focuses on bringing those experiences back to our home. In a journal, Thoreau writes that, "It is in vain to dream of a wildness distant from ourselves. There is none such. It is in the bog in our brain and bowels, the primitive vigor of Nature in us, that inspires that dream. I shall never find in the wilds of Labrador any greater wildness than in some recess in Concord, i.e., than I import into it." (J, IX, 43). Thoreau learned about the overpowering and personal sensory experiences that you can feel in the wilderness and learned that you can bring that quality of nature back to home and still have the same experience. And I believe that this is the essential point that Thoreau brings to American culture with Walden. Thoreau wants Americans to bring this tonic of wildness to everyday life because he believes it is missing and can make their lives deliberate and fulfilled. Thoreau's overwhelming appreciating of the tonic of wildness is furthermore important based on the fact that the last passage he writes in Walden ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Development of Character in Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses In a journey across the vast untamed country of Mexico, Cormac McCarthy introduces All the Pretty Horses, a bittersweet and profoundly moving tale of love, hate, disappointments, joy, and redemption. John Grady sets out on horseback to Mexico with his best friend Lacey Rawlins in search of the cowboy lifestyle. His journey leaves John wiser but saddened, yet out of this heartbreak comes the resilience of a man who has claimed his place in the world as a true cowboy. Mr. Franklin teaches him to look beyond the fact that owning a ranch is a not as simple as it might seem especially for a six–teen–year–old boy. In his journey across the landscape of Mexico, John's character in the novel begins to transform. He is beginning to move away from that boyish and naive kind of behavior and more towards the middle stage of between being a boy and a man; adolescence. McCarthy spends a great deal in describing John's adolescent's stage in this novel. Much of the time that McCarthy describes in this stage is when they are out on the prairie with the horses connecting with nature. This connection allows John to have and a clearer understanding that there is a divine line between men and horses and that you can't apply the same characteristics that you would apply to a horse to a man. In one instance, after a long day of riding John and Rawlins decide to stop for the night and rest. As he rests he lays on his back looking, "out where the quartermoon lay cocked over the heel of the mountain's" the vision of the moon gives the reader a sense of time and how it can be different from time on the prairie compared to time in a society.. • 10. Wildness Of Minoans Essay But was it a religious ceremony to show mankind's dominance over nature? Shapland's article beats back this theory that bull–leaping was a way for humans to assert their dominance, strength, and power over wild bulls. He believes Minoans did not bull–leap–and create representations of these leaps–due to the tension between man and nature. Nowadays, people have a "tendency to reduce human–animal relations to human symbolism;" Shapland calls modern scholars to have a broader view of bull–leaping than of something merely portraying the need of mankind to conquer the wildness of bulls and the larger world. Moreover, much of the Minoans' other art does not reflect this tension; rather, for scenes depicting marine life, for example, there are aquatic creatures, not men with nets and hooks trying to catch them; Minoan art is, for the most part, peaceful. Perhaps, then, bull–leaping was something celebrated not because it was man conquering beast, but man working harmoniously alongside the beast. Minoan culture is steeped in mystery, and scholarly theories swirl around the limited, archeology– based knowledge we have of these ancient Cretans. The ancient world is a slick and slippery place for historians due to the lack of records, and we must ultimately admit that we do not and cannot know the truth of those worlds. We ... • 11. Why Should Zoos Be Banned? The zoo is the place where wild animals are collected for tourist attraction, as there are several endanger species animals protected from extinction by zookeepers. Some people say zoos are the safe place for animals to live because they do not have to seek for food to survive, or the zookeeper can look after them when they suffer from illness, etc. Other people say that zoos are not suitable habitat for animals to live, as some kinds of animals might be difficult to adapt to new condition. In order to make a peaceful relationship between human and animal there are two major reasons why zoo should be banned: they are rarely helping animals from extinction and cause animals' stress behaviors or lack of freedom. First of all, wild animals are unlikely to be helped by the zoo, because they were not born to be caged in the zoo for human's entertainment. Animals are more likely to be used for tourism attraction for the zoo organization, in another word, zoos are using animals to do their business. Humans have adopted a need to control instead of survive creating a separation from dependence on the wild which is the very thing we depend most on, thus resulting in destroying the wilderness and wildness of nature. This separation is not a mere physical separation; the drive to control creates this illusion of connection. For example, in Jack Turner's essay, In Wildness Is the Preservation of the World, he explores this idea through analyzing Henry David Thoreau's essay Walking. Turner states "human beings no longer accept their status as "part and parcel" of a biological realm that is self– willed, self–determined, self–ordered. Instead we have divided ourselves from that realm and make every attempt to control it for our own interest." As a society, have we have become too dependent on what we can make in a factory or lab rather than seeking the solutions in nature? The wilderness is a place we should use to understand ourselves and our existences, doing this we regain respect for the wild and with that the ecosystems that sustain our lives. What readers should understand is that "wild" is described by Henry David Thoreau as past participle of: to will, self– willed. In other words, self–organized and the opposite of controlled. Scarlet Letter Imperfection Imperfection Nathaniel Hawthorne is an Anti–transcendentalist and writes in the time period of 1600s in New England, during puritanism in his novel, The Scarlet Letter. In his novel, The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the symbolism of the Wild Rose–bush, Pearl, and the Forest and Sunlight to contribute to the overall theme of imperfection. The Wild Rose–bush means there is a wild, dark and beautiful side to everyone and everything. Pearl shows that although you were born into darkness, it doesn't mean that you can't be good or pure. The Forest and Sunlight shows that you can be evil or do bad and be wild, and still have goodness and purity in you. Hester is Pearl's mother who committed adultery with Pearl's father, Dimmesdale, while married to his best friend and doctor, Chillingworth. Dimmesdale is Pearl's father and a minister/Priester. To begin, Hawthorne uses the Wild Rose–bush to contribute to the theme of good and evil. The rose on the rose–bush stands for good and beauty, the thorns stand for evil, darkness, and pain. The wildness of the rose–bush represents the wildness that is inside of everyone. Hawthorne explains, "...to symbolize some sweet moral blossom...or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow" (Hawthorne 46). • 21. Summary Of Slavery In Toni Morrison's Beloved In the novel Beloved by Toni Morrison, the social, personal, and political cruelty of American slavery is the central factor driving the story. The method of cruelty most prominent in Beloved is the belittling of slaves at the hands of those with privileged identities, which ultimately reveals that the victims in the novel are each on their own personal quests to reclaim their own identities. Within the novel, Morrison utilizes animalistic language that contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole; that one's identity can be destroyed when victim to a form of cruelty known as dehumanization. One of the most notable moments in which Morrison uses language related to animals to describe a scene of abuse and powerlessness occurs when Sethe partakes in a sexual act with the tomb engraver as an alternative method of payment. The narrator describes the situation once saying "[Sethe] thought it would be enough, rutting among headstones with the engraver, his young son looking on, the anger in his face so old; the appetite in it quite new" (5). A key aspect to this graphic scene is the nature of the son and his father who both contribute to the cruel dehumanization of Sethe. Morrison creates a sense of spectatorship, as if Sethe was just an object to peer at, by describing the son as "looking on." Furthermore, the engravers apparent "anger" and "appetite" immediately invoke a dynamic of a predator seeking out its prey as those two words indicate an animalistic, instinctual ... • 24. The Desert Is No Place For A Man And Cormac Mccarthy The desert is no place for a man and Cormac McCarthy makes that perfectly clear from the onset of Blood Meridian. At first, it's hard to tell which will be more desolate and brutal: the environment or the men that traverse it. However, McCarthy initially seems to establish that unbridled nature will triumph over man every time regardless of the circumstance. If nature is God, then man is hopeless to stand against it. Yet McCarthy makes an important distinction between nature as it exists in the wild and nature that has been tamed by man. Although a lot of his depiction of nature comes from the landscape, he uses animals in a telling way to prove a larger point: nature is only so powerful until it is conquered by men. It is an obvious approach to look at the ways in which the landscape and the desert environment domineer over the gang of men throughout the novel. Less obvious, and at the same time, painfully overt, is the role that wild animals take within the framework of the story. The Judge is quoted as saying that God "speaks in stones and trees, the bones of things" (116) and the overall understanding of this message is that god resides in nature; the force of nature is the force of god. This force is seen clearly the first time someone in the band is attacked by a bear. The first compelling part in this scene is the way the men's horses react to the bear. She thinks of herself less and less as a part of humanity, stating a feeling of disconnect and alienness with other people and society at large being much more comfortable hunting with her hawk. Macdonald fancies herself a changeling born of another world, the world of man being nothing but a place of discomfort and pain, she sees her only chance at a reprieve to return to a place of swaying trees and impenetrable fog where goshawks rule the sky, where wildness dwells and reigns supreme. In this sense Macdonald's hobby is far more than just a hobby to her, she at some level believes that this distance between her and other people, and her obsession with Mabel is all a part of her healing process, of some unspoken, unknowable ritual in which the wild will encapsulate all that she is and remove her from pain and ... Geography is very important when expanding a city. Cities are developed where resources including: water, soil, animals, plants, are plentiful. The areas of land with the highest populations are usually around a water source. Deserts and have the lowest populations because it's hard to sustain life in a very dry, hot environment. • 30. Animals Are Dogs And Cats Most people are families with domesticated animals as pets. The most common pets are dogs and cats. However, some people want to own exotic animals instead of normal animals. They pick what they want, but they actually don't pay attention to an outcome later. There have three outcomes that people should not own exotic animals which are bad for animals, bad for owners, and bad for environment. In the Steps to Writing Well textbook by Jean Wyrick, there has an article that supports people who adopt wild animals and the name is Zuana Kukol's Opposing View: Let People Own Exotic Animals. Based on that, the author gives a message that people should be allowed to adopt any animals because it helps animals stay away from extinction, everybody should have freedom to pick any species of wild, and exotic animals have low numbers of harmful per year. This is also a way to eliminate extinction because exotic animals are captive animals, so they will be backup when animals go extinct. Moreover, the article shows the record of fatalities per year by captive animals only around four people per year. Meanwhile, traffic accidents are around one hundred per day. The writer also supports with emphasis sentences at the end on why people have the freedom to pick their favorite car but not animals. To sum up, the author writes this article because of supporting people who want to own exotic animals as pets. First of all, owning wild animals as pets is a bad decision for animals' life later on. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. What Is The Purpose Of Animals In Entertainment Animals in Entertainment When people think of going to the circus, the first thing that they usually think of is seeing animals doing amazing tricks that they wish their family cat or dog could do. The thing that most people do not know, is that these animals are being treated very cruelly so that circus owners can make money off of people coming to see these animals in action. All over the world, animals are being used for the purpose of human entertainment. When going to the circus, most people never stop and think about what really is happening to the animals featured in this form of entertainment. Some people may even think that these animals are living a great life, they are always being taken care of by humans, they have a place to live, and they never have to worry about predators or finding their own prey. The truth is, the animals that are being utilized for the purpose of human entertainment are living horrible lives and are not suited to live in the environments that they are being placed in. Humans who are surrounding themselves with these animals also are putting themselves in severe danger. The animals that are part of the circus are not supposed to be in captivity, they are supposed to be living in the wild where they are able to fight and fend for themselves, not depend on others to survive. Eventually, an animal's natural instincts will come out, forcing the animal to want to attack and harm someone. What is worst about taking animals into captivity, is ... As she strips away the petals of the flower, it symbolizes her stripping away the outer layers of attachment and personality to find her true core. This image reflects the recurring motif of nakedness, and foreshadows the metamorphosis at the story's end. The Beast has a mask–like face like the Marquis. Beauty explained the mask to be too perfect for human nature and could barely fit the Beast face. Poor relationship with her father, the heroine here has more pride and anger than Beauty. Like the other female protagonists, this heroine is initially treated as an object to be manipulated and gambled away. The Beast in this version is associated with a tiger, a reminder of the heroine's mother in "The Bloody Chamber." He also lives on a threshold between the worlds of wild animals and humans. The heroine's longing for the wild innocence of horses prefigures her later transformation. The symbol of the rose begins to grow more complex here. It is not just a symbol of the heroine's purity and virginity, as it also has thorns – showing the pain of her objectification, but also her own fierceness and pride. The Erl–King will return in a later story as another "metamorphic" figure who controls the wind and captures young women. Carter muses on the nature of her "beasts," how there is a horror in living life on the threshold, but also that there is a kind of beastliness that is internal as well as external. This is another picture of decaying luxury, but the state of The Beast's mansion implies that he has let his wild animal nature take over, and he has little care for keeping up the appearances of a nobleman. Carter never fully describes her "beasts," allowing them to inhabit a fantastic world where a tiger could really ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Even if Sweet Home detained natural beauty, the slaves living there were quite familiar with the 'wildness' of nature. As a child, Sethe remembers her mother how "she'd had the bit so many times she smiled" (Beloved 203). Similarly is a human attributed and the opposite of it signifies inhumanity of whites and non–humanness of blacks. Afro–Americans were 'chattels' and experienced less freedom than the plantations' animals living and gazing around them. Sethe witnesses the portrayal of slaves as animals when she looks at one of schoolteacher's lessons. One of his students in particular studies Sethe and the schoolteacher instructs him to "put her human characteristics on the left; her animal ones on the right. To man, nature can be manipulated and overrun easily but it is not easily destroyed permanently. In Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Pi convinces himself he has altered the beastly nature of his tiger companion, Richard Parker, however, he fails to realize this as a misconception until the certain events with Richard Parker that ultimately revealing that the savage nature within wild animals cannot be tamed. Being more comfortable around such a beast, however, later proves to be a fault of Pi's. The unpredictable behavior of such a wild animal causes a huge threat to Pi. Richard Parker exemplifies this wild behavior by "bursting over the ridge at full gallop...coming [Pi's] way high speed" (Martel 263). Pi describes this event as a "rapid and direct approach of a known killer" which casts a different image of Richard Parker than the previous seemingly harmless companion (Martel 236). Pi's reaction to his fear is using his method of whistle which causes more anger within Richard Parker. Richard Parker's unexpected reaction to the training method proves how capricious a personality of an animal is. Thus, attempted taming of a wild animal was merely a distant goal Pi thought he had accomplished. The violent outbreak of Richard Parker, along with his silent departure at the end of the novel, portrays how futile it is to try to change a wild animal into a civilized being. Richard Parker seems, at first, to have experienced a spiritual breakthrough and transformation after Pi's attempt to training. Even in the end, Pi's ability to survive such a journey with a beastly killer seems evidence enough that Pi trained the tiger. Pi's main goal, along with survival, is to establish a level of equality between himself ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

P.240 I believe that this quote told by Zoe that shows that she thinks wildness is defined as unusual. The reason I think this is because she says " he's one of us". " One of us" is relating to their family. Their family is very unusual. Zoe raising herself, Henry disappearing from being a heart doctor to being an artist, Wil being her unknown brother that she never knew about, and so on. I also believe that Zoe's term of wildness is unusual because when she made that statue and they called it the " Wild Thing". The cat, in his perspective, explained that it resemble her. If she and Henry know that the statute resemble her they were exclaiming that she is a Wild Thing, and she has wildness inside of her. Therefore, I believe that Zoe thinks the term wildness means unusual. " I huddled up to Henry and thought of the beautiful sculpture he'd given me for Christmas–––the one that had spoken to me that day in his studio–––saying it was for all the holidays and birthdays he'd missed. • 38. Essay about Nature and Humanity, a Comparison of Poems When humans and nature come together, they either coexist harmoniously because nature's inhabitants and humans share a mutual respect and understanding for each other, or they clash because humans attempt to control and force their ways of life on nature. The poems, "The Bull Moose" by Alden Nowlan, "The Panther" by Rainer Maria Rilke, "Walking the Dog" by Howard Nemerov, and "The Fish" by Elizabeth Bishop, describe what happens when humans and nature come together. For example, Nowlan uses the image of the men pry[ing] open [the moose's] jaws with bottles" to show how humans try to have power over the moose. Although this image illustrates how humans are able to control the moose, I believe the use of the word "pry" suggests that this control was not easy, but was rather hard and difficult, which further suggests the idea that the moose and the townspeople are clashing rather than blending together. I believe this situation suggests that humanity and nature will continue to clash because humans believe that they are superior to nature, and therefore, they view nature as something they can control and exploit. In addition, this situation reflects humanity's powerful need to control themselves because the townspeople believe that by controlling the moose, they are able to keep not only the moose's wild nature under control, but also they are able to control the wildness inside of themselves. Nowlan further illustrates the townspeople's attempt to incorporate the wild moose into their society when he uses a simile to compare the moose to a "tolerant old collie."
