Maricopa County Superior Court Observation
Social Work is a complex and very diverse field with many options to work in. Many social workers
find themselves going to court to advocate for their clients. Others may consider working with the
court directly. As an observer of a court it is important to notice the individuals involved, the
accessibility of the court, the parties involved, and personal reflections that one perceives.
Description
Court
I attended the Maricopa County Superior Court located at 222 E Javelina Ave, Mesa, AZ 85210. I
went on Wednesday December 6, 2017 from 1pm to 5pm. I attended both the criminal court in room
202 and family court in room 301. In the criminal court, I observed 9 different cases and in the
family court only 1 case. In the criminal courtroom, the Judge was Judge Barth and the state
prosecutor was James Blair for all the cases. The public defenders (PD) were different for most all
the cases except some cases had the same PD in which none of them had more that 2 offenders
assigned to them at that day. The PD included, Resario Spaccaferro, Josephine Hallum, Kurt Harris,
Asario Backafera, Robert Duffy, and Brian Gardner. In the family court only the petitioner (the
mom) had an attorney Charles Brown, and the respondent (the dad) represented himself. All
attorneys and PD were dressed in suits and the judges of course were in their black robes. The state
prosecutor was also in a suit but had khaki pants and a dark navy blazer.
Ease of Access
Walking up I noticed there was a giant white tubing in the middle of the parking lot that was draped
over the wall and the court had orange cones blocking the handicap ramp. Coming out this obstacle
was no longer there. However, there is only one ramp and could have been a huge issue for someone
who needed ADA access to the courtroom. It looked as if it was a fire hose but no water or fire truck
was in sight. Additionally, there is a bus stop behind the court house in front of the juvenile court
house. This makes it very easy for someone to access the courthouse through public transportation.
The surrounding neighborhood is primarily businesses. The old department of Motor Vehicle is still

a civic education would be one effective way to increasing resiliency. Tell the citizen they should

whole US nation. There were so many magnificent people who graduated from this amazing
University, and because of the magic of this college, some of them choose to live in this beautiful

senior wildcat: Anna Marie Mesa who attended the UA in the fall semester of 1964. Ms. Mesa is one

of the major issues encountered today, racial profiling is a discriminatory conduct held by law
enforcement and the criminal justice system. In my eyes, racial profiling is the use of race, ethnicity,

Mesa Verde National Park on the Colorado Plateau contains many geological aspects of interest,
including its sedimentary rock layers, its canyons, its alcoves utilized by ancient people and how
these alcoves were formed. Mesa Verde National Park is located in the southwest corner of
Colorado, close to the Four Corners area, on top of a high mesa overlooking the Mancos River
(Harris et al. 2004). The park, covering 81 square miles, consists of several main sedimentary
formations that are characteristic to the park (Encyclopedia Britannica 2015). Canyons are carved
into the sedimentary rock, with the cave dwellings found high on their steep walls. These dwellings
are an especially unique aspect to the Mesa Verde National Park, and are built out of large alcoves.

Monmouth University Hawks vs University of Kentucky Wildcats. The event was held at Madison
Square Garden, at noon, on Saturday December 9th, 2017. It was a competitive two hours' worth of
entertainment, resulting in the final score of The Kentucky Wildcats 93 points and The Monmouth
Hawks with 76. A great effort was put forward by the Hawks, but the Kentucky wildcats ultimately
took the win. It was a great experience shared with friends and peers from Monmouth University,
and showcased off school spirit.

Policy and Background:
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were developed nationally in 2009 with the intent of
better preparing students for college, and their eventual careers. Faced with the option of whether to
adopt or reject CCSS, the state of Arizona chose the former. The Arizona College and Career Ready
Standards (AZCCRS) were officially adopted in 2010, with required implementation starting in the
2013 school year. The approved common core subjects are English and math, and place a heavy
focus on the development of real world, critical thinking skills. Common Core standards were
adopted by the state of Arizona because of the perceived need to enhance students' abilities to
transition from K–12 grade levels to college and the career world. The AZCCRS clearly dictate what
Arizona children should know at each grade level (Expect More Arizona, 2014) Aside from
updating everyday classroom standards, there has also been a push to replace the outdated Arizona's
Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) test. While there was debate over which standardize test to
administer, the state of Arizona has decided that Arizona's Measure of Educational Readiness to
Inform Teaching (AZMERIT) will be the best tool to measure the success of the new educational
standards. As with most new policies, there are strong opinions about the new standards.

There has been rumors that people would like to combine Tucson international airport and Phoenix
international airport. Residents from both cities would like the two airports to be combined
somewhere in the middle of the two fast growing cities. Tucson Airport is owned by the city of
tucson and it is a military/civilian airport located 8 miles south of downtown tucson in pima county.
Phoenix Sky harbor international airport is also a civil/military airport located 3 miles southeast of

will help economically because since both of parts of the cities facing the each other is growing, the

The Western Reenvisioned Two men meet alone in a dusty town, facing off in one final gunfight or
there is a line of cavalry men on horses waiting for the Indians to crest the hill that faces them.
These are two visions of the Western film that has long been a staple of this genre. There are those
that see the Western differently and their interpretation is just as intense or thought provoking, even
comical. Unforgiven directed and starring Clint Eastwood and Blazing Saddles directed by Mel
Brooks are two such films that took the Western to another level and envisioned the wild west in a
new light. Their versions still held onto the some of the true Western themes and revered the scenic
visions of the frontier and the mystery of the immense landscape while changing the view of how a
Western film should be filmed. Both directors reexamine the typical Western characters,
reenvisioned the role of violence, while still celebrating the beauty of Western frontier. Unforgiven
opens with what is typical from the Western, a conflict occurs, in this case it is a man trying to

The University Of Arizona Vs. Utsa
Going to a university where football is taken as serious as it is here at Arizona is an affair of it's
own. Personally, I had only experienced various high school football games, until September 3rd,
2015 when I decided to attend The University of Arizona vs. UTSA here at our home stadium. The
school spirit, pride and student section, also known as the ZonaZoo, are all such huge contributions
to the experience itself. Although football games are only one part of the community here at the U of
A, they bring out the comradery in our student body as U of A students love to watch their school
succeed against opponents. The clock struck 3:30pm as I walked into my apartment on Thursday the
3rd after my MIS class. I proceeded to unlock my bedroom, put my bag down and get into my UA
Wildcat gear in preparation for the first game. My fraternity brothers and I were all meeting over at
our house shortly so we could all walk to the stadium together. I then proceeded down the elevator,
out to Park Avenue, and started my walk to the house. The minute I stepped outside I overheard a
group of girls talking about the football game. "I'm so excited to finally get back to the Zoo," one

Importance Of College Education
I would like to acknowledge my entire family for their help and for never giving up on me. I have to
thank my parents for tirelessly encouraging a son who didn't seem that interested in getting a degree
for a very long time. They also shouldered an enormous portion of the financial burden involved in
attending a university. I would also like to thank my younger brother. Ironically, he has been a role
model for me, and has been an example of how to be a better student as well as a better man. Both
of my grandmothers have been wonderful and patient with me, while making sure that I understood
that they were both expecting a graduation at some point. Lastly, I would like to acknowledge my
wife, who has supported and encouraged me during this last stretch of going back to school after a
long hiatus. Without her love and support on a daily basis, I am quite sure I would not be completing
my degree in December.
Introduction
My college education began in the fall of 2001. I graduated from Glenwood High School and
enrolled at Arizona State University. I arrived in late August and started getting acclimated in a new
state with all new people. I went from living in Springfield, a town of about 100,000 people at the
