An Brief Introduction Of Arduino
An brief introduction of Arduino
1.History of Arduino
Arduino, a relatively new prototyping platform, has gained great popularity all over the world in less than a decade, over 700,000 official boards had
been manufactured by 2013 [1], not to mention the amount of unofficial clone boards which is very likely to surpass the official ones [2]. In this
paper, the basic concepts about Arduino, the underlying principles are shown briefly, also the reasons that it's so prevalent among both industrial and
individual user groups, as well as some of the common applications of it.
It's in 2002 that Banzi Massimo, a software architect, was hired by IDII (Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, a graduate school based in Ivrea, Italy) as
an associate professor to promote novel means of doing interactive design, which is also referred as physical computing. But with limited class time
and reduced budget Banzi can't do much, like others he had to rely on a microcontroller called BASIC Stamp which is developed by a California
company Parrallax. Banzi found that board has inadequate computing capability for some projects and a little bit high–priced (around US$100), also it
can't run on Mac system which is widely used among IDII designers. It's since then that he started to think about making a board himself that doesn't
have these problems. Then in 2004, one of Banzi's students Hernando Barragan developed a new prototyping platform called Wiring when writing his
thesis, it consisted of

The Airport City Of Whittier, Ca 90602, And The Date I...
1. The place is at City of Whittier, the location is 13230 Penn Street Whittier, CA 90602, and the date I went to go visit was Thursday August 6. It
was my first time attending a local governmental meeting. The meeting that was held was titled as The Parking and Transportation Commission. I
was glad the topic was on this because I felt keeping our society safe is the most important. So the City Council would do its best to make sure that
there would not be hassle while driving on the road way. They try their best to prevent traffic and parking problems. Obviously there is still going to be
traffic on the freeways, but they try their best to cause fewer problems for people in the society. The members that were in the meeting would give
suggestions or feedback, and recommendations to other board members. Everyone had their own point of view about the Parking and Transportation
issue. The Directive was taking a look at the transportation ecological impact reports, future transportation expansion strategies, and school crossing
guard sites. I feel like their thoughts were all good, however in my opinion it is not a good idea to use all those recommendations regarding about the
issue. The reason for this is because then it would be too costly. I feel that it would be best to just take the best recommendation and then use that as a
strategy for traffic flow. In addition, I like the idea of how they need of school crossing guard places is important, because sometimes children do

The Effect Of Traffic On Major Cities By Running A Few...
Traffic Lab
ITEC 201 In this lab we will examine the impact of traffic on major cities by running a few test simulations as well as examining data on the topic.
Please answer the following questions in detail.
1.What are some major challenges you feel cities face when dealing with and handling large amounts of traffic? What could be some potential solutions
that could minimize some traffic congestion?
When dealing with handling large amounts of traffic, cities may experience a higher incidence of accidents or speeding cars due to road rage. Cities
also deal with risking driver safety because some drivers may be tired from long hours at work and do not have enough energy to stay awake
throughout the hours of traffic on the road home every day. Traffic congestion not only affects car drivers, but it may also delay the trip of those
who get to places on the bus and in taxi cabs as well. On city roads, traffic congestion may lead to the death of many pedestrians by car accident
because drivers may become impatient and outrageously try to run red lights or not stop at the crosswalks. Also, the running engine in the high traffic
may lead to high rates of air pollution. Some potential solution are to build bridges or streets around the city that are made mainly for public
transportation services such as the city bus or taxi cab in order to reduce the number of frustrated drivers on one road. Also, cities may also arrange for
road construction to be done at times when the

Suburbanisation in Surbiton Essay
Surbition – London
Surbiton is a small borough in the South–West of London just South of Kingston–Upon–Thames. It has a population of nearly 170,000 people and has
been at the centre of suburbanisation for many years now. Much of the growth is form the centre of London
Timeline
1830 – Train line between London and Southampton was built which ran near Surbiton.
1837 till 1952 – The population of Surbiton grew from 200 to 2800.
1887 – At this point the population was at just above 10000.
1930 – A large amount of houses were built along in the centre of the village that were large houses and a series of smaller houses were built going
towards the River Thames increasing the population size further.
1950s/1960s – A lot more schools... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This causes a lot of congestion at peak times and larger vehicles such as buses and lorries cannot pass through. Surbiton is in London travel zone 6
(zone 1 is centre of London and zone 6 covers the edge of London), which means that train fares are quite expensive. This means that many people
(40% of Surbiton) choose to drive to work and this in turn increases the amount of traffic on the roads and increases pollution along the roads
connecting to the A3 (main road into London). The house prices are quite high in Surbiton, the average selling price in Surbiton in 2012 was
ВЈ406,000 compared to the national average of ВЈ226,000. This makes in increasingly difficult for people on lower incomes to move to the area which
could lead to economic segregation (people with high incomes living in different areas to those with a lower income). Another problem that was a
recurring theme in the 1930's was that people were becoming extremely ill as they couldn't afford medical attention because of the prices they were
paying for their houses along with their food and other essentials.
Management of the problems
'The improvement strategy for Surbiton town centre' was launched in the autumn of 2009. The strategy involved widening a number of roads in the
town, building a new access road to the station, having set delivery times for shops so roads didn't get congested as badly and delivery bays could

The Roman Empire : The Causes For The Fall Of Rome
Fall of Rome
How could the once miniscule Roman Empire (once one of the largest empires to exist) be simply reduced back to comparable dust to that of its
former rank? Since Rome's humble beginnings, its reign has lasted nearly 650 years. These years were filled with vast culture, advances in law,
medicine, and breakthroughs that would set the tone for Western Civilization. But this would all collapse into the enemy's grasp, as all things must
have an end. Primarily government corruption, military issues, and foreign invasion caused the defeat of Rome.
For many others, now including Rome, corruption of government has been a cause of its own downfall. In support, Document B relays that, "Although
there were many disasВters, which led to the loss of great cities, no one tried to restore breastplates and helmets to the infantry." (Document B) When
this issue that is declining the Empire can easily be solved, but no action is taken, is the ultimate sign of irresponsibility and corruption of the
government. In agreement, Document B also states that, "Hosts of senators, bureaucrats, and clergymen were entitled to avoid the draft." (Document
B) By giving certain privilege to its own, the government displays a lack of support in their own nation. This lack of support is what causes Rome to
lose key battles, and therefore contributes to the downfall of the empire. In endorsement, Document E explains that, "... taxes are very severe, and
unprincipled men inflict injuries on others ...

A Push for Safer Crosswalks for RACC Students and Faculty...
In this modern day and age many drivers and pedestrians alike become easily distracted by: cell phones, I–Pods, navigation systems, as well as many
other distractions. These distractions can make it quite dangerous to even cross the street. It is quite shocking how worn and faded some of the
crosswalks at RACC have become. Even without the distractions the crosswalks are rather difficult to see and be able to stop if a pedestrian steps into it.
The crosswalks at RACC connect the main campus with the parking lots, as well as other buildings, and classes just off campus. Having a student
population of almost 5,000 undergraduate students in addition to its full faculty and staff, a large majority of these people have no choice but to park ...

Therefore while they are distracted and driving their focus must alternate between whatever other task is at hand and driving. This draws their attention
away from the road, which can potentially lead to an accident. A crosswalk is generally designed to provide a safe path for pedestrians to cross by
marking the designated path that people can cross and in which motorist should be able to see. "Should" is the keyword, because as the paint fades,
chips, and wears from traffic; the path becomes harder for motorist to see. The consequence of this is a driver will be less aware that someone may
step into the road trying to cross at these points. Laws and legislation are beginning to crack down on these drivers but the roads are still a dangerous
place for a person to be.
There are a multitude of options to increase the safety at cross walks. "A pilot program in Virginia, which is based off of similarly designed
programs oversea, uses zigzagged lines painted on the road at dangerous crossings"( Woodward, 2009). The idea is that the lines will draw a
motorist's attention to the road, the upcoming crosswalk, and they become aware of the potential for pedestrians to be crossing. Placing a crossing
guard at each crosswalk could serve the dual

Western vs. Noir: An Exploration of Genre in True Grit
Even though the novel had already been adapted into a film once, in 2010, the Coen brothers decided to take a swing at their own version of Charles
Portis' classic western, True Grit. Comparatively to the book and even Henry Hathaway's 1969 film adaptation, however, the Coens have crafted the
story into their own. Mattie's bildungsroman is more uncompromising and realistic, the relationships Mattie forms with Cogburn and LeBeouf become
more complex, and the almost separated ending paints a different picture regarding this film's genre. The film no longer follows the traditional recipe
of what a classic western is but instead blends the praxes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only is Cogburn describing how the whole hunt for Cheney is hopeless, but he also describes Mattie as a harpy. Originating from Greek
mythology, harpies are mythological beasts resembling a bird with a woman's head. These creatures were attributed to stealing food and carrying off
victims when such things would go missing (Room). Cogburn's use of this mythology to describe Mattie explains the femme fatale characteristics of
her carrying off Cogburn onto her dangerous adventure. This description helps explore how Mattie is embodying a femme fatale like character by
seducing Cogburn into this dangerous and hopeless "wild goose chase."
Mattie displays another characteristic of a femme fatale in the sense that she becomes a woman where both males in the story are frequently
fighting for her recognition. Instances such as LeBeouf claiming that while he was "watching [Mattie], [he] gave some thought to stealing a kiss"
(Coen). The femme fatale is not often won over by love or lust of any characters. Mattie, even when presented by these two beaus, stays very
independent. This is reinforced by Portis' novel where Mattie proclaims that she never really worried about marriage. "I never had the time to get
married but it is nobody's business if I am married or not married...A woman with brains and a frank tongue and one sleeve pinned up and an invalid
mother to care for is at

Fargo Film Analysis
Fargo is a movie directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen who are brothers. It is a 1996 American crime film. Unlike most common movies, Fargo
has its own style. The story is linear. It tells a story in three different lines. The beginning of the film shows a few lines of subtitles. It is adapted
from a true story took place in Minnesota in 1987. The reason why this is done, just to be more attractive, if audiences feel it is real, then they will go

Cause and Effect Essay – The Right Of Way
In the state of Washington, pedestrians have always had the right of way. However, the recent enforcement of this law is causing traffic problems
citywide. Traffic tends to come to a screeching halt without any warning. I was driving North on Nevada Street in Spokane, three of four lanes of
traffic had stopped to allow a man and a young child to cross the street, the fourth lane of traffic had not stopped. Finally a car in that fourth lane of
traffic stopped, causing the car behind it to slam on the brakes, literally coming to a screeching halt. Had the man and child started across the street and
the screeching car not been able to stop, it would have hit the already stopped ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Washington Administrative Code (WAC 132G
–116–090) states: "Pedestrians –– Right of way. (1) The operator of a vehicle shallyield the right of
way, slowing down or stopping, if need be, to so yield to any pedestrian crossing any street, roadway, fire lane, or pathway with or without a marked
crosswalk." When a car has to stop for these pedestrians to cross, it can cause traffic problems. On the other hand, Spokane City Municipal Code
16.61.240 states: Every pedestrian crossing a roadway at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at an
intersection shall yield the right of way to all vehicles upon the roadway.
Local law enforcement has stepped up their efforts to enforce the pedestrian crossing law. Recently the Spokane County Sheriff's Department set up a
traffic sting near Whitworth College; several officers dressing in plain clothes posed as pedestrians crossing Hawthorne Road. The Whitworthian, the
campus newspaper, reported
Sophomore Meagan Schwartz slowed her car down when she saw a man step into the road at the crosswalk. She saw that the man wasn't in a hurry
to cross the street and assumed she was a safe distance away, so she continued driving. Moments later, she was pulled to the side of the road by a
police officer on a motorcycle.
The result was a seventy–one dollar ticket for the

" Great shot Breanna, great shot" said a fan congratulating her on winning the game with a buzzer beater shot, with a second left to play. After the
game was done, she went into the locker room to change and get ready to go home. Once she got finished changing she starting walking outside
towards her car. As she was driving home with the music blaring loud as her raging voice sings to the music, she gets a text message from her
friends congratulating her on the win. And just like any other teenager out there she looks at it and replies back to it. Going at least 65 on the
highway with the music still blaring loud, she replies. Not paying any attention to the road, she still looks at her phone, little does she know she's
coming up to a railroad crossing. She sets her phone down finally and starts paying attention to the road again. But, once again, she gets a text
from one of her teammates. So again, she checks her phone, completely ignoring the road once again. Coming up closer and closer to the train
crossing, she doesn't' hear that a train is coming and is blaring its horn, of course she doesn't hear because of her music. Still texting her friend she
comes up within a fourth a mile. Paying little attention to the road, she slowly presses the gas pedal a little more every second not realizing it
because she's on the phone. Coming within a couple hundred feet from the railroad, the train still racing towards the same crossing she's coming up
to. Inching towards the crossing, now at a speed of 71, she's within 50 feet of the crossing, she looks up to realize that there's a train to her left about

it was, there would have to be a miracle to happen. And that's just what happened, a miracle happened and Breanna missed the train. As she missed the

Comparing Clothing in Knight's Tale and the Miller's Tale...
One of the striking differences between the Knyghts Tale and the Millers Tale (which is supposed to "quit(e)" the Knyghts Tale) is that of clothing (the
former tale) and lack of clothing (in the latter). Upon an inspection of the General Prologue's description of the Knyght, I found that clothing is a very
signifcant part of the Knyght's Tale. Chaucer's decription of him may forshadow (or, since Chaucer wrote the tales after they were told, color his
perceptions of the Knyght) the importance of clothing in the Knyght's Tale. Special attention is paid to the Knyght's coat of mail.

But this ornament may in fact hinder the tale. When Chaucer began the Tales with the Knyght's Tale, he was probably quite aware that he was going to
borrow heavily from other tales. "...Scholarship has uncovered and stressed his strong relationship to conventional rhetoric..." (Finlayson 133). Chaucer
probably felt as if he was about to be bound by the fact that he was borrowing from another tale (from Boccaccio's Il Teseida delle nozze d'Emilia), and
that he would have to change it to make it his own. The characters that he uses are "bound by literary stereotypes and narrative function which they
fulfil rather than transcend or reject." (Finlayson 147). Chaucer transcends the Romantic stereotype, but the characters don't. The characters are bound
to convention and the ornament of Romance, much like they are bound by thier clothes that define them, keep them from true human (flesh) contact,
and that ultimately destroys them.
The first significant mention of clothing is when, after Theseus has conquered Thebes, the soldiers go through the pile of corpses.

Descriptive Essay On Eclatant City
Г‰clatant City Paris, France is truly an incredible city. While it is best known for its tourist attractions, including the Eiffel Tower, Paris is so
much more than this. Despite being relatively cold all throughout the year, the warmest being in the high sixties, Paris has a population of around
2,241,400. Paris is a very historical city, founded in the 3rd century BC by the Gauls. Some tourist attractions in Paris include the Louvre museum,
Notre Dame, and Disneyland Paris. While Paris is great, it did need improvements, and the end result was Г‰clatant City, our new and advanced
city. There are many infrastructures to choose from, but the most important ones that we have placed in our city are modes of transportation,
education, health, and safety. It is important to every citizen, that they can get to places they want to be to enjoy the beautiful cityscape. It is also
crucial that a city is safe, which we have decided to improve in our city. Many new forms of transportation and safety improving items will be
placed in this city to make it even better than before! Г‰clatant City is a place of the future. When remodeling the city, we added many futuristic
elements, such as drones. We used police drones to help keep our citizens safe. These drones fly around, and, if they spot something out of the
ordinary, a message is sent to the local police station, ensuring that the problem would is taken care of. These drones can also spot fires in the city and

and, because this means that more people will be waiting at the next stops, they fall even further behind schedule leading to bunching and compounding
delays. Bunched buses and delays make public transport unattractive for customers and increase operational costs, so congestion impacts on public
transport must be eliminated whenever possible.

Persuasive Essay On Crosswalks
Summary
Since moving into the neighborhood about seven months ago, there are a lot of activities for the residents to partake in. The neighborhood has
eleven playgrounds, (some which are for younger children considered tot lots), four basketball courts, a pool, a recreational center, and mailboxes at
the end of each resident's street. Seems like a lot of places you are able to walk, right? One thing missing in the neighborhood is crosswalks leading to
each of these different places and more. What I am proposing is to have cross walks put up throughout the neighborhood so residents are safe when
crossing the road.
Problem
A large circle is the main road for the neighborhood and has eight connecting streets leading to where the resident's houses are located. Families each
day walk around the neighborhood to different activities such as the playgrounds, basketball courts, the pool, and other activities. The problem is
when residents have to walk to different places there are no safe places to cross the road. Currently there are no painted crosswalks or even pedestrian
crossing signs. This can cause a major safety concern for residents and drivers. Children and teens can be affect largely by this due to the school bus
dropping them off at the entrance of the neighborhood. Also, as this being unsafe for residents this is also an unsafe condition for others such as, the
families of residents, maintenance workers, delivery drivers, etc. However,

Why Are Railroad Crossing Important
Railroad crossing is very important. It is always important to be aware of your surroundings and what is going on around you. If you are at a train
stop, you also need to be aware of what is going on around you. You can never be too safe at a train stop and railroad crossing. Also you should
never walk on train tracks or cross between two different carts. The train could start moving and then you wouldn't be able to go back. As I stated
earlier, the understanding of railroad crossings and train tracks are very important.
` When you are approaching a railroad, you always need to slow down. You need to slow down because anything could happen. The railroad crossing
gates could signal an oncoming train at anytime. If you have headphones in, hood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Put the distractions down and focus on what is important. It is never worst risking your life for a text or your favorite song. When you stop at a
railroad crossing you must be between 15–20 feet from the nearest rail. You may not drive through, around, or under any crossing gate or barrier at a
railroad crossing while they are down or being opened or closed.
You should always look both ways when you are at a railroad crossing. If you look one way only, you might not see something coming the other way.
In the video "Utah Transit
Authority Operation Lifesaver" it explains that you always look both ways and even the other way again. Something could come around the corner
when you weren't looking and surprise you. Walking on train track is also trespassing. you can get a big fine for being on them. when you cross over
between two carts, you are also trespassing. If you are crossing between two carts, the train could start moving at anytime. If you get stuck or you
don't cross fast enough, the train would go with you on it. You could and would get extremely injured. A shortcut or faster way to get somewhere, is
never worth your life. Even if you are late for something, do not break the

Highway Project Review
Auckland, a highly populated city in New Zealand experiences traffic problems frequently. This problems needs to be resolved through development of
a road system that would tackle challenges imposed by the population. Auckland Transport manages road projects in the city. One of the projects in
Auckland city that is underway by Auckland Transport (AT) is the upgrade of Dominion Road project. AT inherited this project from the Auckland city
council, which had earlier undertaken public consultation for a proposed upgrade to Dominion Road. Key concerns from the earlier consultation
undertaken by the Auckland City Council included loss of on–street parking, and concerns that use of bus lanes by other vehicles would create four–lane
highway. AT in its design includes the concerns raised and has engaged both the public, including the potentially affected residents, and other key
stakeholders from the government and the private sector. AT has opened a feedback process in which views about the improvement of Dominion road
are collected to be examined and possibly to be approved and included in the final design.

Public Manager 's Morals And Values
The 150 residents of Babcock Place are senior citizens who have gone to the city council to request that a crosswalk of Constitution Avenue.
Constitution Avenue is a four lane thoroughfare that leads to the downtown district. The council asked the city planning department to send out an
engineer to determine if there was truly a need for a crosswalk. The engineer determined that there was no need for a crosswalk, which upset the
residents of Babcock Place along with the Neighborhood Association that supported the residents. The council members were left to determine
what measures should be taken next, if any. This paper will look at how the residents of Babcock Place and the city planning department can have

Tiverton Road and Wolverton Street Corridor Improvement
Faculty of Technology and Built Environment
Introduction
We were asked by our Highway engineering lecturer to write a report about a current or previous project listed on the Auckland transport site. After a
research on the site, I have chosen to write about Tiverton road Wolverton street corridor improvement.
Tiverton road and Wolverton Street, play a major role in linking the suburbs of New Lynn and New Windsor. The 2.2km stretch of road carries an
average of 31400 vehicles per day. And a two lane addition was required to allow for the ease of travel and safer environment for both motorist and
pedestrian users. The project has been given less than 2 years to be completed starting in 2014.
Background
Back in 1920's, the work had started in developing an arterial road that helped link west Auckland with its central suburbs. The 2.2km stretch of road
added great commercial and residential benefits in linking and intersecting with major roads in the area.
On September 2012, the road works started after a site blessing held by local iwi NgДЃti WhДЃtua ЕЊrДЃkei and Ngaitai–ki–tamaki in conjunction
with Auckland Transport and Downer NZ.
Problem statement
With the increased traffic flow caused by the popularity of the road and the current motorway extension to Maioro Street, the road required widening to
lower traffic jams during rush hours. Moreover, with the increase of residents in the area, the street required safer and better utilities such as safer
footpaths,

Title:Analysis of "Alison" from The Millers Tale, Canterbury Tales
In "The Miller's Tale," the character of Alison is introduced as the 18–year–old wife of a carpenter who is much older than the woman. The author's
description of the young wife seems to suggest that she was so wild, beautiful, and desirable that the old man had a difficult time containing his jealousy.
Chaucer uses a number of expressions to "paint" a picture of the young wife. The use of the term "paint" is intentional here, since Chaucer seems to be

prostitute or a slut. He even states in the last line of this section that for some men, the young carpenter's wife looks like the kind of woman they'd
like to take to bed, others would see her as the kind they'd like to take home to meet their mother (she was a flower "For any lord to leggen in his
bedde, or yit for any good yeman to wedde.").
It is obvious that while the older carpenter has married a young lusty woman who is full of life, it could be a difficult situation for him depending
upon how other men are viewing his new wife. On the one hand, people will see her as a lovely innocent woman, while on the other hand, because
she is too picture perfect and overly concerned about her appearance, she may (with her wanton eye) be giving people the idea that is interested in

Planning for Pedestrianization of Charminar Precincts
Planning for Pedestrianization of Charminar Precincts
Background:
Pedestrian spaces are becoming increasingly rare now–a–days. The increase in the vehicular movement has moved the pedestrian into subways and
over bridges. In most of the cities, a pedestrian is not taken into consideration while planning and design of traffic and transportation systems with the
importance imparted to vehicular modes of travel.
It is frequently overlooked that almost every person is a pedestrian at some or the other point of time. So serious thought should be given to various
issues relevant to pedestrian safety, convenience and amenities.
Pedestrian spaces have a long history, most of the olden towns in India, display a great respect towards the pedestrians. The obvious reason for this is
that, walking was the only and the most used mode of transport.
Now–a–days, due to the bombastic growth of human population as well as vehicular population, these older towns experience a huge problem related
to traffic issues. As these towns were formed with main intention of serving pedestrians, it raises a concern when it has to serve vehicles.
Providing accessibility to the transport network for all members of a community is vitally important. For most members of the community severed
from easy accessibility i.e. the very young, old, or mobility impaired, walking provides the first, last and often the only mode of transport. Other
functions such as community involvement, health, recreation, meeting and

Cell Phone Use While Driving should be Banned in all States Imagine you are driving down the road and you begin to notice the car in front of you
is swerving. You start to wonder if the driver may be under the influence; you keep a close watch on the car, but keep your distance for safety
precautions. All of a sudden the driver slams on their brakes to avoid hitting a pedestrian and you end up rear–ending them. Later you discover that the
driver was texting on their phone and almost hit the pedestrian because their attention was elsewhere. How would that make you feel? Now, you have
to pay to repair the damages on not only your car, but the other driver's car as well. I believe that cell phone use while driving should be banned in all...

Once a driver gets on their phone, they also may decrease in speed because they are not focusing on the speedometer, which could lead to other
drivers becoming agitated. Then the other drivers may exhibit road rage which could become dangerous to others on the road. A driver's focus
should always remain on the road. If one is on their phone they cannot see or hear what is happening around them. A driver being on the phone
while driving is one of the biggest distractions drivers today face. Lastly, cell phone use while driving should be banned because it can become
dangerous for oneself as well as others on the road. Not only does cell phone use for drivers endanger other people, it endangers the life of the
operator itself. Drivers can run off the road into trees, ditches, or poles; they may also run into other cars or drift into oncoming traffic. Using a cell
phone while driving also puts other drivers on the road in danger; if a driver is texting, their eyes are on their phone and they may not see the car in
front of them stopping, which will lead into a wreck that could injury someone. I believe all states should ban all use on cell phones while driving. I
feel by doing this, drivers may stay safer. There are already laws in some states prohibiting the use of phones. A driver using the phone while driving
will become distracted, which takes their attention away from the road. If one is not focused on the road, then

Guy Vanderhaeghe 's The Last Crossing
Guy Vanderhaeghe's The Last Crossing is a Western of subtly crossed borders. Vanderhaeghe elicits a sense of blurred lines between opposites, giving
the illusion that boundaries are not so statically fixed. The historical figure Jerry Potts illustrates that the division between Indigenous and white is not
so easily distinguished by ways of appearances, languages, and relations. The lines of health and illness intertwine as the reader follows Addington's
syphilis, Custis' mystery ailment, and the Indigenous peoples' struggle with smallpox. Justice, punishment, and the law become subjective in the novel
with regards to Madge's death, Addington's military massacre, and Indigenous resistance against unfair treatment. Distinctions between ... Show more

His abilities with languages lead to his "[making] a living as an interpreter and guide" (105). In The Last Crossing Potts is used as a guide primarily, but
his gift with languages bridges the gap between whites and Indigenous, as he is able to speak English to the Gaunt brothers. Without the understanding
of language, the relationship between the Metis man and the English brothers would never have been established. PROOF COMMENT
Names create an identity, and Vanderhaeghe uses this convention to further confuse the division between Indigenous and white. Jerry Potts is also
referred to as Ky–yo–kosi and Bear Child throughout the novel, mirroring his own inner conflict of being unsure of what he really is. He wants to be
"a Blackfoot, a Real Person" (Vanderhaeghe 106) but he is most commonly called by his white name, reminding the reader of his positions on both
sides. Another instance for confusion is when a Metis brother is referred to with his white and Indigenous name together in a sentence. "Unborn
Calf...McKay's pony" (330).
Health and illness do not have concrete characteristics in The Last Crossing. Addington's battle against syphilis, Custis' near–fatal ailment, and the
Indigenouss' constant fight with smallpox show that appearances are deceiving. Addington is battling with syphilis throughout the book and his health
fluctuates between well and unwell. Addington's health picks up from being "liverish and out of sorts, complexion poor, teeth

Everett Rogers Diffusion Of Innovations
Diffusion of Innovations seeks to explain how innovations and social changes are taken up in a segmented group of people. An innovation is
considered as either an idea, behavior, or object that is perceived as new by the receiving audience. According to author Everett Rogers, Diffusion of
Innovations offers three valuable insights into the process of social change which include: what qualities make certain innovations spread rapidly than
others, the value of peer–peer conversations and peer networks during social changes, and assessing and understanding the needs of different
individuals in a specific population. In the book, Diffusion of Innovations, the focus is not on the people who change, but the innovations themselves.

A Brief Comparison Of Legs And Miller's Crossing
Legs, written by William Kennedy, and Miller's Crossing, produced by Ethan Coen and directed by Joel Coen, portray the world of organized
crime in America during Prohibition. Legs tells the story of Marcus Gorman, a lawyer from Albany, New York, as he works for the notorious
bootlegger, Jack "Legs" Diamond. Miller's Crossing depicts the life of Tom Reagan, an Irish gangster, and his struggle to secure Leo O'Bannon's
supremacy over competing mob leader, Johnny Casper. In both works, the jewelry, especially the rings, which Leo O'Bannon and Jack Diamond
leaders wear allude to their state within organized crime. When he is first introduced, Leo is pouring himself a glass of whiskey wearing a grey suit
and a large gold ring on his finger while Johnny Casper demands that he forfeits Bernie Bernbaum. Whiskey means "water of life" (Class), referring to
Leo's being the life force behind organized crime. Grey is symbolic of "neutralization, egoism, depression, inertia and indifference–meanings derived
from the colour of ashes" (Cirlot 54). Thus, the grey suit which Leo wears symbolizes his professionalism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Theme Of Feminism In The Canterbury Tales
Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales as a way to portray satire and a lot of irony into his view of Europe during the time period. While the
tone can be taken as very sarcastic and mostly for fun, there are some very serious scenes that in today's society would be disturbing, at least, to
unprepared young adult audiences today. This is already apparent in The Reeve's Tale, which follows after The Miller's Tale, where he decides to tell a
story about a dishonest miller. This tale follows said miller and two university students who indulge in less than desirable activities. Unfortunately, this
tale focuses around the two university students getting into bed with the only females at the miller's home by any means necessary, helping to bring
about the themes of feminism within the tale. Among these themes is the idea of "instrumentality", which is the view and treatment of a person, in this
case, women, as a sort of tool or instrument for men to use. These uses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When applied with the theme of feminism, it can be easy to see how the men in this story disregard the wife and daughter's feelings when in search

he has to sneak up on the daughter while she's asleep and doesn't even offer her a chance to cry out. (4192–4198) She is coerced into it and winds up
just going with the flow since Chaucer could have intended for her to be slightly okay with what's happening, playing on the idea that women could
secretly fantasize about rape. While this isn't necessarily directly disregarding women, the idea of rape and the act of it is what shows the theme of
denial of subjectivity, where the daughter had no say and no chance to say anything, therefore being robbed of her

Pros And Cons Of Railroad Crossing
Railroad crossings can be very dangerous. In my opinion, people don't really take them seriously, but they can be very hazardous and sometimes
fatal. Here are some tips from unit 5 lesson 7 for railroad crossing safety: Always make sure to slow down and turn your radio down when
approaching a railroad crossing. This will give you time to assess whether or not there's a train coming and you will also be able to read the
warning signs and hear any horns sounding. In the video "It's your choice" a young boy who was walking on the tracks had his headphones in and
didn't hear the train coming was killed. I feel like this was a dumb decision to wear headphones while walking on the railroad tracks. You should never

You should never drive under, through or around any barrier or crossing gate at a railroad crossing because you never know when a train is going to
come. Sometimes there aren't barriers or gates but you need to slow down and watch for the flashing lights. Also it is important to not be closer than
15 feet to the nearest rail when coming to a stop. Warning signs are there to protect you and it defeats thepurpose if you don't pay attention to them.
Public railroad crossings are marked with warning devices for our safety by highway departments and different railroad companies. You should know
what the warning devices are and watch for them. With these warning devices and being cautious, you can avoid getting in a railroad–crossing crash.
Pavement markings are X" and the letters "RR" painted on the pavement in front of railroad crossings. These markings are there to warn you to be
aware and cautious of the crossing ahead and to pay close attention to the of a train. Railroad crossbuck signs are located at all public crossings. If
there are more than one set of tracks, a sign below the crossbuck indicates the number of

Crossing Within Polylingual Families With Contested Structure
Introduction
This research seeks to examine crossing within polylingual families with contested structure. I analyzed a scene from the television show Trailer Park
Boys in which a three member family interact using the concepts of crossing, facework, and footing, in order to answer my research question. I found
that the central character uses crossing as a method of performing facework. As a result of this, he also indicates preference and dispreference to his
family members.
Theoretical Framework
Crossing involves someone speaking in another language, dialect, or pattern which feels distinctly "other" (Rampton, 2000, p. 54). This can occur in a
wide variety of contexts such as first generation Americans using English in a non–English household in order to embrace one cultural system over
another. Or, using a different pattern of speech around a significant other's parents in order to convey positive social values. In the case of the scene
I analyzed, the central character's language is already crossed as he is a white man speaking almost exclusively African American Vernacular English
(AAVE). He further uses crossing to interact with his Hispanic girlfriend. As a character, his crossed language is one of his most defining qualities,
making him an interesting case study. Because of the character's use of AAVE as a white man, he can be juxtaposed with 'Mike', the person of interest
in a study of white teens and AAVE adoption (Cutler, 1999). Mike, like Jamie, the main

Rules Of Courtly Love : The Outcome Of William Shakespeare...
Rules of Courtly Love; the outcome In the Middle Ages it was very common for people to follow the methods of Courtly Love. Courtly Love is
the way they chose to find love, they worshiped the woman to get her attention and they also did things such as show noble and heroic character
by doing deeds. This method of love came with a set of rules that some chose to follow while others didn't. The lovers were knights and they were
chivalrous men with noble standards. When dealing with love we all want to know if its true or non existent. The two people of this story chose
to follow the rules of courtly love to find out. There are two stories that I am going to compare for the outcome of following the rules. In "the
Miller's Tale", they use the rules of courtly love in the complete opposite of what it usually is used for. The narrative telling the story, well actually
the miller makes a total and complete joke of courtly love and everything it stands for. He made it seem very worthless by the way he talked about
the characters in a very impolite manner as well as the deeds that the characters do throughout the story. Although he is drunk his story has a
purpose. I think this story was made just to show exactly how crazy the rules of love are or may be. Because based on his tone the miller thinks that
courtly love is just a waste of time and thinks it's just crazy and foolish to believe that love is really happens like that. The miller talks about a parish

The Problem Of Traffic Lights
The idea for traffic lights began in the mid–1800s when a system was essential to sustain the amassed flow of horse–drawn traffic flow. By 1868, a
signal was put in by the intersection of George St and Bridge St, which is close to the Parliament. The installment provided pedestrians a safe crossing,
and an answer to officials that need to sustain traffic.
The semaphore involves a signal of a tall post with movable arm. When the arm is aligned sideways, it mean stop. After dark, a gas lamp was lit at
the top. The green lenses means to go, and red means stop. Originally, the signal is controlled by hand, and the officers decided when the signal to be
changed according to traffic flow. They would also whistle to remind drivers, when the signal will change. However, this method turned out to be
hazardous. In 1869, a leak in one of the gas lines led to a traffic signal explosion. The incident severely wounding the policeman operating it, and led to
the semaphore project to be terminated in London.
In America, the semaphore were be rolled out to public because there were more motorists travelling on the road. However, many problems arose due
to officers finding it to be difficult to sustain the traffic congestion. Some cities started to install traffic towers, which allowed officers to have a clearer
view to monitor the traffic in an elevated platform.
In the early 1900s, the automobiles just gain popularity throughout the world and traffic becomes busier results. Car were

An Analyis of the Conventions of Courtly Love Within The Miller's Tale and Morte Darthur While both "Morte Darthur" and "The Miller's Tale"
display some characteristics of a satirical approach in which human vices are attacked in a whimsical manner through irony, comedy, and folly, they are
actually quite different in their literary genre and style. "Morte Darthur", an adventurous tale with an imaginary setting that perfectly idealizes the
chivalrous knight–hero and his noble deeds done for the love of his lady, is a classic example of a tragic medieval romance. A fabliau, of which "The

Within these works, neither female character feels a marital commitment, yet both feel a strong commitment to their lovers: Guinevere to Sir
Lancelot, and Alison to "Nicholas, this hende whom she loveth so" (Chaucer 245). Sir Lancelot's commitment is also to his lover instead of his
employer, who also happens to be his lover's husband. It is important to note that "lovers" in both "Morte Darttur" and "The Miller's Tale" did not
necessarily refer to sexual partners, "for love at that time was not as love is nowadays" (Malory 442), but to the emotional connection between two
people. At the time marriage was either an institution of convenience or a strategy used to increase familial ties within the nobility and ruling
classes; it almost never had anything to do with personal choice or love. In fact, courtly love was typically not practiced within a marriage. Instead it
provided a means for people to feel and express the love that was missing in their marriages, while holding on to the financial and social advantages
that the marital relationship provided. Courtly lovers had secret, lustful trysts which tended to escalate into a mental and sometimes physical affair.
However, it was expected that once an affair began, the lovers would be fully committed to one another, as Capellano expressly stated, "No one can be
bound by a double love."Malory especially uses commitment to

The Problem Of Car Accidents
Introduction and background Since the creation of automobiles in 1769, the number of cars on the roads has drastically increased and with it the
number of car accident. In the United Stated there have been a total of 32,719 car accident; in the year 2013 that either did or did not involve
pedestrians or cyclist. The overcrowding of streets and large number of car accidents can be attributed to the large influx of cars. While the
number of accident in Texas is high standing at 3,382 as of 2013; a large amount; 10% of those accident took place in Harris County, in
comparison to other counties in Texas that have less than .1%. Car accidents have many causes such as running red lights, drinking and driving,
speeding, use of mobiles, lack of sleep and vigilance while preforming the task of driving. These actions caused numerus deaths of the drivers,
passengers, and pedestrians. Which is also why the leading cause of death in children is car accidents. Problem The problem at its core of car
accidents is the overcrowding of the roads; which is not only a social issue but a financial issues due to the huge costs that are placed on the public
and the government in order to cover an accident; while cost is a term that is more than often used to discuss money, in this instance it will also be

It is up to the reader to see these themes and take them to heart as they read on in the tales, since Chaucer isn't afraid of using his satire of the times
and people in order to tell a real tale on the realities of how society functioned during the medieval times. While this is fiction, Chaucer intended to
put in as many subtle or or obvious views and ideals as possible with as little censoring as he could. Thankfully, he succeeded in such a

Wildlife Cons And Cons Of The United State Department Of...
Wildlife Crossings Pros and Cons In 2015, the Washington State Department of Transportation began construction on a series of improvement to I
–90,
a key interstate that connects eastern and western Washington. The project includes many measures to improve traveler safety and efficiency such as
avalanche bridges, expanded lanes, straightened curves, and replacement bridges (WSDOT–I–90–Snoqualmie Pass East, 2016). However, in addition
to those changes, they are also adding controversial wildlife crossing structures to the interstate that are intended to allow wildlife to get across the
roadway safely without entering traffic. There are several benefits like improved genetic diversity of our wildlife, less injuries and death from
collisions with them, and lower economic costs as result, but also many drawbacks such as high initial costs, predators exploiting the crossing
structures, and the crossing structures not being used by the animals they were intended for. Some of the major benefits of the I–90 crossing structures
are the increased genetic diversity of our wildlife, lowering our costs from collisions and less injuries and death from collisions. With fewer
collisions with animals and allowing animals a safe way to cross the roadway, they are able to move more freely and safely between various
populations of their species (Doughton, 2015). This allows them to breed with those they are not closely related to and makes the population more
genetically diverse. Diversity in

increase pedestrian activities particularly for short trips, the government has begun to promote non–motorized travel options by improving pedestrian
facilities that promote an assured level of convenience, comfort, and security for potential users. One of the facilities that have been provided by the
government is the pedestrian bridge.
A pedestrian bridge or footbridge is a bridge constructed for pedestrians and sometimes for cyclists and bikers as well. It reduces the conflicts of traffic
flow between the pedestrians and the vehicles by separating them. Hence, it helps in overcoming accidents and offers safety.
However, due to the added travel distance, most of the pedestrians normally avoid using these bridges. This in turn, adds to traffic congestion and
accidents that involve pedestrians.
For the purposes of this research evaluation, the site selections are around the city of Kuala Lumpur.¬¬
Background to the Study
Pedestrian bridges may offer safety and protection to the users but pedestrians often avoid using these facilities. According to the survey that has been
conducted by H. Rizati, Siti Zaharah Ishak, Intan Rohani Endut (2013), this is due to several factors. They are the added travel distance, the location of
the facility, and the vehicle volume. Pedestrians prefer to utilize pedestrian

Designing Design And Application Design
Because RPP was unable to have the application developed at this time, objectives 5–7 were unable to be completed. However, the modified objectives
were successfully completed. These objectives encompassed creating an up–to–date GeoMedia database compatible with Smart Client, designing the
application, and performing an economic feasibility study. Moreover, the application design involved all technical sight triangle calculations. Once
RPP has the financial resources available, the application design is ready to be sent to the developer for building. 6.1Database and Application Design
6.1.1Data The database has successfully been updated and implemented into GeoMedia. Each attribute has not been filled, except Crossing ID, Railway,

Adding this category allows the inspector to know prior to arrival that they can skip the crossing. 6.1.2.2Xing_Access (Crossing Accessibility)
Cross Accessibility is a new piece of data being collected. Crossings classified according to the road class (grid, highway, or urban) and the
crossing class (public, private, or GS). Generally speaking, public crossings are inspected whereas private crossings are not; they are not under
MHI jurisdiction. However, if a private crossing is publicly used, it can be deemed appropriate to inspect. Moreover, where there is public right of
way crossing a rail right of way, even if there is no developed roadway, it is technically a public crossing. However, these undeveloped crossings are
not inspected, as there is no road. However, RPP wished to retain these data points. A crossing accessibility attribute's purpose is to further distinguish
public and private crossings so an inspector can know prior to visiting the site whether the grade crossing should be inspected or not. A crossing's
accessibility can be considered normal, publicly used (PU), or undeveloped (UD). GS, normal–private, and UD–public crossings are not inspected.
Normal–public and PU–private crossings are inspected. PU–public and UD–private crossings are not possible combinations. In the application, these
accessibility options will be unable to be selected once a crossing classification is chosen. For example, once a crossing is

An Brief Introduction Of Arduino

  • 1. An Brief Introduction Of Arduino An brief introduction of Arduino 1.History of Arduino Arduino, a relatively new prototyping platform, has gained great popularity all over the world in less than a decade, over 700,000 official boards had been manufactured by 2013 [1], not to mention the amount of unofficial clone boards which is very likely to surpass the official ones [2]. In this paper, the basic concepts about Arduino, the underlying principles are shown briefly, also the reasons that it's so prevalent among both industrial and individual user groups, as well as some of the common applications of it. It's in 2002 that Banzi Massimo, a software architect, was hired by IDII (Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, a graduate school based in Ivrea, Italy) as an associate professor to promote novel means of doing interactive design, which is also referred as physical computing. But with limited class time and reduced budget Banzi can't do much, like others he had to rely on a microcontroller called BASIC Stamp which is developed by a California company Parrallax. Banzi found that board has inadequate computing capability for some projects and a little bit high–priced (around US$100), also it can't run on Mac system which is widely used among IDII designers. It's since then that he started to think about making a board himself that doesn't have these problems. Then in 2004, one of Banzi's students Hernando Barragan developed a new prototyping platform called Wiring when writing his thesis, it consisted of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Airport City Of Whittier, Ca 90602, And The Date I... 1. The place is at City of Whittier, the location is 13230 Penn Street Whittier, CA 90602, and the date I went to go visit was Thursday August 6. It was my first time attending a local governmental meeting. The meeting that was held was titled as The Parking and Transportation Commission. I was glad the topic was on this because I felt keeping our society safe is the most important. So the City Council would do its best to make sure that there would not be hassle while driving on the road way. They try their best to prevent traffic and parking problems. Obviously there is still going to be traffic on the freeways, but they try their best to cause fewer problems for people in the society. The members that were in the meeting would give suggestions or feedback, and recommendations to other board members. Everyone had their own point of view about the Parking and Transportation issue. The Directive was taking a look at the transportation ecological impact reports, future transportation expansion strategies, and school crossing guard sites. I feel like their thoughts were all good, however in my opinion it is not a good idea to use all those recommendations regarding about the issue. The reason for this is because then it would be too costly. I feel that it would be best to just take the best recommendation and then use that as a strategy for traffic flow. In addition, I like the idea of how they need of school crossing guard places is important, because sometimes children do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Effect Of Traffic On Major Cities By Running A Few... Traffic Lab ITEC 201 In this lab we will examine the impact of traffic on major cities by running a few test simulations as well as examining data on the topic. Please answer the following questions in detail. 1.What are some major challenges you feel cities face when dealing with and handling large amounts of traffic? What could be some potential solutions that could minimize some traffic congestion? When dealing with handling large amounts of traffic, cities may experience a higher incidence of accidents or speeding cars due to road rage. Cities also deal with risking driver safety because some drivers may be tired from long hours at work and do not have enough energy to stay awake throughout the hours of traffic on the road home every day. Traffic congestion not only affects car drivers, but it may also delay the trip of those who get to places on the bus and in taxi cabs as well. On city roads, traffic congestion may lead to the death of many pedestrians by car accident because drivers may become impatient and outrageously try to run red lights or not stop at the crosswalks. Also, the running engine in the high traffic may lead to high rates of air pollution. Some potential solution are to build bridges or streets around the city that are made mainly for public transportation services such as the city bus or taxi cab in order to reduce the number of frustrated drivers on one road. Also, cities may also arrange for road construction to be done at times when the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Suburbanisation in Surbiton Essay Surbition – London Surbiton is a small borough in the South–West of London just South of Kingston–Upon–Thames. It has a population of nearly 170,000 people and has been at the centre of suburbanisation for many years now. Much of the growth is form the centre of London Timeline 1830 – Train line between London and Southampton was built which ran near Surbiton. 1837 till 1952 – The population of Surbiton grew from 200 to 2800. 1887 – At this point the population was at just above 10000. 1930 – A large amount of houses were built along in the centre of the village that were large houses and a series of smaller houses were built going towards the River Thames increasing the population size further. 1950s/1960s – A lot more schools... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This causes a lot of congestion at peak times and larger vehicles such as buses and lorries cannot pass through. Surbiton is in London travel zone 6 (zone 1 is centre of London and zone 6 covers the edge of London), which means that train fares are quite expensive. This means that many people (40% of Surbiton) choose to drive to work and this in turn increases the amount of traffic on the roads and increases pollution along the roads connecting to the A3 (main road into London). The house prices are quite high in Surbiton, the average selling price in Surbiton in 2012 was ВЈ406,000 compared to the national average of ВЈ226,000. This makes in increasingly difficult for people on lower incomes to move to the area which could lead to economic segregation (people with high incomes living in different areas to those with a lower income). Another problem that was a recurring theme in the 1930's was that people were becoming extremely ill as they couldn't afford medical attention because of the prices they were paying for their houses along with their food and other essentials. Management of the problems 'The improvement strategy for Surbiton town centre' was launched in the autumn of 2009. The strategy involved widening a number of roads in the town, building a new access road to the station, having set delivery times for shops so roads didn't get congested as badly and delivery bays could ... • 5. The Roman Empire : The Causes For The Fall Of Rome Fall of Rome How could the once miniscule Roman Empire (once one of the largest empires to exist) be simply reduced back to comparable dust to that of its former rank? Since Rome's humble beginnings, its reign has lasted nearly 650 years. These years were filled with vast culture, advances in law, medicine, and breakthroughs that would set the tone for Western Civilization. But this would all collapse into the enemy's grasp, as all things must have an end. Primarily government corruption, military issues, and foreign invasion caused the defeat of Rome. For many others, now including Rome, corruption of government has been a cause of its own downfall. In support, Document B relays that, "Although there were many disasВters, which led to the loss of great cities, no one tried to restore breastplates and helmets to the infantry." (Document B) When this issue that is declining the Empire can easily be solved, but no action is taken, is the ultimate sign of irresponsibility and corruption of the government. In agreement, Document B also states that, "Hosts of senators, bureaucrats, and clergymen were entitled to avoid the draft." (Document B) By giving certain privilege to its own, the government displays a lack of support in their own nation. This lack of support is what causes Rome to lose key battles, and therefore contributes to the downfall of the empire. In endorsement, Document E explains that, "... taxes are very severe, and unprincipled men inflict injuries on others ... ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. A Push for Safer Crosswalks for RACC Students and Faculty... In this modern day and age many drivers and pedestrians alike become easily distracted by: cell phones, I–Pods, navigation systems, as well as many other distractions. These distractions can make it quite dangerous to even cross the street. It is quite shocking how worn and faded some of the crosswalks at RACC have become. Even without the distractions the crosswalks are rather difficult to see and be able to stop if a pedestrian steps into it. The crosswalks at RACC connect the main campus with the parking lots, as well as other buildings, and classes just off campus. Having a student population of almost 5,000 undergraduate students in addition to its full faculty and staff, a large majority of these people have no choice but to park ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore while they are distracted and driving their focus must alternate between whatever other task is at hand and driving. This draws their attention away from the road, which can potentially lead to an accident. A crosswalk is generally designed to provide a safe path for pedestrians to cross by marking the designated path that people can cross and in which motorist should be able to see. "Should" is the keyword, because as the paint fades, chips, and wears from traffic; the path becomes harder for motorist to see. The consequence of this is a driver will be less aware that someone may step into the road trying to cross at these points. Laws and legislation are beginning to crack down on these drivers but the roads are still a dangerous place for a person to be. There are a multitude of options to increase the safety at cross walks. "A pilot program in Virginia, which is based off of similarly designed programs oversea, uses zigzagged lines painted on the road at dangerous crossings"( Woodward, 2009). The idea is that the lines will draw a motorist's attention to the road, the upcoming crosswalk, and they become aware of the potential for pedestrians to be crossing. Comparatively to the book and even Henry Hathaway's 1969 film adaptation, however, the Coens have crafted the story into their own. Mattie's bildungsroman is more uncompromising and realistic, the relationships Mattie forms with Cogburn and LeBeouf become more complex, and the almost separated ending paints a different picture regarding this film's genre. These creatures were attributed to stealing food and carrying off victims when such things would go missing (Room). Cogburn's use of this mythology to describe Mattie explains the femme fatale characteristics of her carrying off Cogburn onto her dangerous adventure. This description helps explore how Mattie is embodying a femme fatale like character by seducing Cogburn into this dangerous and hopeless "wild goose chase." Mattie displays another characteristic of a femme fatale in the sense that she becomes a woman where both males in the story are frequently fighting for her recognition. Instances such as LeBeouf claiming that while he was "watching [Mattie], [he] gave some thought to stealing a kiss" (Coen). The femme fatale is not often won over by love or lust of any characters. Mattie, even when presented by these two beaus, stays very independent. This is reinforced by Portis' novel where Mattie proclaims that she never really worried about marriage. "I never had the time to get married but it is nobody's business if I am married or not married...A woman with brains and a frank tongue and one sleeve pinned up and an invalid mother to care for is at ... However, the recent enforcement of this law is causing traffic problems citywide. Traffic tends to come to a screeching halt without any warning. I was driving North on Nevada Street in Spokane, three of four lanes of traffic had stopped to allow a man and a young child to cross the street, the fourth lane of traffic had not stopped. Finally a car in that fourth lane of traffic stopped, causing the car behind it to slam on the brakes, literally coming to a screeching halt. Not paying any attention to the road, she still looks at her phone, little does she know she's coming up to a railroad crossing. She sets her phone down finally and starts paying attention to the road again. But, once again, she gets a text from one of her teammates. So again, she checks her phone, completely ignoring the road once again. Coming up closer and closer to the train crossing, she doesn't' hear that a train is coming and is blaring its horn, of course she doesn't hear because of her music. • 13. Comparing Clothing in Knight's Tale and the Miller's Tale... One of the striking differences between the Knyghts Tale and the Millers Tale (which is supposed to "quit(e)" the Knyghts Tale) is that of clothing (the former tale) and lack of clothing (in the latter). Upon an inspection of the General Prologue's description of the Knyght, I found that clothing is a very signifcant part of the Knyght's Tale. Chaucer's decription of him may forshadow (or, since Chaucer wrote the tales after they were told, color his perceptions of the Knyght) the importance of clothing in the Knyght's Tale. Special attention is paid to the Knyght's coat of mail. "He was a verray, parfit gentil knyght. But for to tellen you of his array, His hors were goode, but he was nat gay. When Chaucer began the Tales with the Knyght's Tale, he was probably quite aware that he was going to borrow heavily from other tales. "...Scholarship has uncovered and stressed his strong relationship to conventional rhetoric..." (Finlayson 133). Chaucer probably felt as if he was about to be bound by the fact that he was borrowing from another tale (from Boccaccio's Il Teseida delle nozze d'Emilia), and that he would have to change it to make it his own. The characters that he uses are "bound by literary stereotypes and narrative function which they fulfil rather than transcend or reject." (Finlayson 147). Chaucer transcends the Romantic stereotype, but the characters don't. The characters are bound to convention and the ornament of Romance, much like they are bound by thier clothes that define them, keep them from true human (flesh) contact, and that ultimately destroys them. The first significant mention of clothing is when, after Theseus has conquered Thebes, the soldiers go through the pile of corpses. • 17. Persuasive Essay On Crosswalks Summary Since moving into the neighborhood about seven months ago, there are a lot of activities for the residents to partake in. The neighborhood has eleven playgrounds, (some which are for younger children considered tot lots), four basketball courts, a pool, a recreational center, and mailboxes at the end of each resident's street. Seems like a lot of places you are able to walk, right? One thing missing in the neighborhood is crosswalks leading to each of these different places and more. What I am proposing is to have cross walks put up throughout the neighborhood so residents are safe when crossing the road. Problem A large circle is the main road for the neighborhood and has eight connecting streets leading to where the resident's houses are located. Families each day walk around the neighborhood to different activities such as the playgrounds, basketball courts, the pool, and other activities. The problem is when residents have to walk to different places there are no safe places to cross the road. Currently there are no painted crosswalks or even pedestrian crossing signs. This can cause a major safety concern for residents and drivers. Children and teens can be affect largely by this due to the school bus dropping them off at the entrance of the neighborhood. Also, as this being unsafe for residents this is also an unsafe condition for others such as, the families of residents, maintenance workers, delivery drivers, etc. However, ... Tiverton Road and Wolverton Street Corridor Improvement Faculty of Technology and Built Environment Introduction We were asked by our Highway engineering lecturer to write a report about a current or previous project listed on the Auckland transport site. After a research on the site, I have chosen to write about Tiverton road Wolverton street corridor improvement. Tiverton road and Wolverton Street, play a major role in linking the suburbs of New Lynn and New Windsor. The 2.2km stretch of road carries an average of 31400 vehicles per day. And a two lane addition was required to allow for the ease of travel and safer environment for both motorist and pedestrian users. The project has been given less than 2 years to be completed starting in 2014. Background Back in 1920's, the work had started in developing an arterial road that helped link west Auckland with its central suburbs. The 2.2km stretch of road added great commercial and residential benefits in linking and intersecting with major roads in the area. On September 2012, the road works started after a site blessing held by local iwi NgДЃti WhДЃtua ЕЊrДЃkei and Ngaitai–ki–tamaki in conjunction with Auckland Transport and Downer NZ. Problem statement With the increased traffic flow caused by the popularity of the road and the current motorway extension to Maioro Street, the road required widening to lower traffic jams during rush hours. The increase in the vehicular movement has moved the pedestrian into subways and over bridges. In most of the cities, a pedestrian is not taken into consideration while planning and design of traffic and transportation systems with the importance imparted to vehicular modes of travel. It is frequently overlooked that almost every person is a pedestrian at some or the other point of time. So serious thought should be given to various issues relevant to pedestrian safety, convenience and amenities. Pedestrian spaces have a long history, most of the olden towns in India, display a great respect towards the pedestrians. The obvious reason for this is that, walking was the only and the most used mode of transport. Now–a–days, due to the bombastic growth of human population as well as vehicular population, these older towns experience a huge problem related to traffic issues. As these towns were formed with main intention of serving pedestrians, it raises a concern when it has to serve vehicles. Providing accessibility to the transport network for all members of a community is vitally important. For most members of the community severed from easy accessibility i.e. the very young, old, or mobility impaired, walking provides the first, last and often the only mode of transport. A Brief Comparison Of Legs And Miller's Crossing Legs, written by William Kennedy, and Miller's Crossing, produced by Ethan Coen and directed by Joel Coen, portray the world of organized crime in America during Prohibition. Legs tells the story of Marcus Gorman, a lawyer from Albany, New York, as he works for the notorious bootlegger, Jack "Legs" Diamond. Miller's Crossing depicts the life of Tom Reagan, an Irish gangster, and his struggle to secure Leo O'Bannon's supremacy over competing mob leader, Johnny Casper. • 32. Theme Of Feminism In The Canterbury Tales Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales as a way to portray satire and a lot of irony into his view of Europe during the time period. While the tone can be taken as very sarcastic and mostly for fun, there are some very serious scenes that in today's society would be disturbing, at least, to unprepared young adult audiences today. This is already apparent in The Reeve's Tale, which follows after The Miller's Tale, where he decides to tell a story about a dishonest miller. This tale follows said miller and two university students who indulge in less than desirable activities. Unfortunately, this tale focuses around the two university students getting into bed with the only females at the miller's home by any means necessary, helping to bring about the themes of feminism within the tale. Among these themes is the idea of "instrumentality", which is the view and treatment of a person, in this case, women, as a sort of tool or instrument for men to use. These uses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When applied with the theme of feminism, it can be easy to see how the men in this story disregard the wife and daughter's feelings when in search of a goal literally within their grasp. A large part of this comes from Alain when he is in the process of raping the miller's daughter. He mentions how he has to sneak up on the daughter while she's asleep and doesn't even offer her a chance to cry out. (4192–4198) She is coerced into it and winds up just going with the flow since Chaucer could have intended for her to be slightly okay with what's happening, playing on the idea that women could secretly fantasize about rape. While this isn't necessarily directly disregarding women, the idea of rape and the act of it is what shows the theme of denial of subjectivity, where the daughter had no say and no chance to say anything, therefore being robbed of her ... • 33. Pros And Cons Of Railroad Crossing Railroad crossings can be very dangerous. In my opinion, people don't really take them seriously, but they can be very hazardous and sometimes fatal. Here are some tips from unit 5 lesson 7 for railroad crossing safety: Always make sure to slow down and turn your radio down when approaching a railroad crossing. This will give you time to assess whether or not there's a train coming and you will also be able to read the warning signs and hear any horns sounding. In the video "It's your choice" a young boy who was walking on the tracks had his headphones in and didn't hear the train coming was killed. I feel like this was a dumb decision to wear headphones while walking on the railroad tracks. You should never park closer than 50 feet froma railroad... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... You should never drive under, through or around any barrier or crossing gate at a railroad crossing because you never know when a train is going to come. Sometimes there aren't barriers or gates but you need to slow down and watch for the flashing lights. Also it is important to not be closer than 15 feet to the nearest rail when coming to a stop. Warning signs are there to protect you and it defeats thepurpose if you don't pay attention to them. Public railroad crossings are marked with warning devices for our safety by highway departments and different railroad companies. You should know what the warning devices are and watch for them. With these warning devices and being cautious, you can avoid getting in a railroad–crossing crash. Pavement markings are X" and the letters "RR" painted on the pavement in front of railroad crossings. These markings are there to warn you to be aware and cautious of the crossing ahead and to pay close attention to the of a train. Railroad crossbuck signs are located at all public crossings. • 34. Crossing Within Polylingual Families With Contested Structure Introduction This research seeks to examine crossing within polylingual families with contested structure. I analyzed a scene from the television show Trailer Park Boys in which a three member family interact using the concepts of crossing, facework, and footing, in order to answer my research question. I found that the central character uses crossing as a method of performing facework. As a result of this, he also indicates preference and dispreference to his family members. Theoretical Framework Crossing involves someone speaking in another language, dialect, or pattern which feels distinctly "other" (Rampton, 2000, p. 54). This can occur in a wide variety of contexts such as first generation Americans using English in a non–English household in order to embrace one cultural system over another. Or, using a different pattern of speech around a significant other's parents in order to convey positive social values. In the case of the scene I analyzed, the central character's language is already crossed as he is a white man speaking almost exclusively African American Vernacular English (AAVE). He further uses crossing to interact with his Hispanic girlfriend. As a character, his crossed language is one of his most defining qualities, making him an interesting case study. Because of the character's use of AAVE as a white man, he can be juxtaposed with 'Mike', the person of interest in a study of white teens and AAVE adoption (Cutler, 1999). • 35. Rules Of Courtly Love : The Outcome Of William Shakespeare... Rules of Courtly Love; the outcome In the Middle Ages it was very common for people to follow the methods of Courtly Love. Courtly Love is the way they chose to find love, they worshiped the woman to get her attention and they also did things such as show noble and heroic character by doing deeds. This method of love came with a set of rules that some chose to follow while others didn't. The lovers were knights and they were chivalrous men with noble standards. When dealing with love we all want to know if its true or non existent. The two people of this story chose to follow the rules of courtly love to find out. There are two stories that I am going to compare for the outcome of following the rules. In "the Miller's Tale", they use the rules of courtly love in the complete opposite of what it usually is used for. The narrative telling the story, well actually the miller makes a total and complete joke of courtly love and everything it stands for. He made it seem very worthless by the way he talked about the characters in a very impolite manner as well as the deeds that the characters do throughout the story. Although he is drunk his story has a purpose. I think this story was made just to show exactly how crazy the rules of love are or may be. Because based on his tone the miller thinks that courtly love is just a waste of time and thinks it's just crazy and foolish to believe that love is really happens like that. • 36. The Problem Of Traffic Lights The idea for traffic lights began in the mid–1800s when a system was essential to sustain the amassed flow of horse–drawn traffic flow. By 1868, a signal was put in by the intersection of George St and Bridge St, which is close to the Parliament. The installment provided pedestrians a safe crossing, and an answer to officials that need to sustain traffic. The semaphore involves a signal of a tall post with movable arm. When the arm is aligned sideways, it mean stop. After dark, a gas lamp was lit at the top. The green lenses means to go, and red means stop. Originally, the signal is controlled by hand, and the officers decided when the signal to be changed according to traffic flow. They would also whistle to remind drivers, when the signal will change. However, this method turned out to be hazardous. In 1869, a leak in one of the gas lines led to a traffic signal explosion. The incident severely wounding the policeman operating it, and led to the semaphore project to be terminated in London. In America, the semaphore were be rolled out to public because there were more motorists travelling on the road. However, many problems arose due to officers finding it to be difficult to sustain the traffic congestion. Some cities started to install traffic towers, which allowed officers to have a clearer view to monitor the traffic in an elevated platform. In the early 1900s, the automobiles just gain popularity throughout the world and traffic becomes busier results. Car were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An Analyis of the Conventions of Courtly Love Within The Miller's Tale and Morte Darthur While both "Morte Darthur" and "The Miller's Tale" display some characteristics of a satirical approach in which human vices are attacked in a whimsical manner through irony, comedy, and folly, they are actually quite different in their literary genre and style. "Morte Darthur", an adventurous tale with an imaginary setting that perfectly idealizes the chivalrous knight–hero and his noble deeds done for the love of his lady, is a classic example of a tragic medieval romance. A fabliau, of which "The Miller's Tale" is an example, takes a comical approach with the typically large cast of colorful characters: the blissfully ignorant husband, the ... Within these works, neither female character feels a marital commitment, yet both feel a strong commitment to their lovers: Guinevere to Sir Lancelot, and Alison to "Nicholas, this hende whom she loveth so" (Chaucer 245). Sir Lancelot's commitment is also to his lover instead of his employer, who also happens to be his lover's husband. It is important to note that "lovers" in both "Morte Darttur" and "The Miller's Tale" did not necessarily refer to sexual partners, "for love at that time was not as love is nowadays" (Malory 442), but to the emotional connection between two people. At the time marriage was either an institution of convenience or a strategy used to increase familial ties within the nobility and ruling classes; it almost never had anything to do with personal choice or love. In fact, courtly love was typically not practiced within a marriage. Instead it provided a means for people to feel and express the love that was missing in their marriages, while holding on to the financial and social advantages that the marital relationship provided. Courtly lovers had secret, lustful trysts which tended to escalate into a mental and sometimes physical affair. However, it was expected that once an affair began, the lovers would be fully committed to one another, as Capellano expressly stated, "No one can be bound by a double love."Malory especially uses commitment to ... The Problem Of Car Accidents Introduction and background Since the creation of automobiles in 1769, the number of cars on the roads has drastically increased and with it the number of car accident. In the United Stated there have been a total of 32,719 car accident; in the year 2013 that either did or did not involve pedestrians or cyclist. The overcrowding of streets and large number of car accidents can be attributed to the large influx of cars. While the number of accident in Texas is high standing at 3,382 as of 2013; a large amount; 10% of those accident took place in Harris County, in comparison to other counties in Texas that have less than .1%. Car accidents have many causes such as running red lights, drinking and driving, speeding, use of mobiles, lack of sleep and vigilance while preforming the task of driving. These actions caused numerus deaths of the drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Which is also why the leading cause of death in children is car accidents. Problem The problem at its core of car accidents is the overcrowding of the roads; which is not only a social issue but a financial issues due to the huge costs that are placed on the public and the government in order to cover an accident; while cost is a term that is more than often used to discuss money, in this instance it will also be used to not only describe money but also monetary gain through an occupation. • 41. Wildlife Cons And Cons Of The United State Department Of... Wildlife Crossings Pros and Cons In 2015, the Washington State Department of Transportation began construction on a series of improvement to I –90, a key interstate that connects eastern and western Washington. The project includes many measures to improve traveler safety and efficiency such as avalanche bridges, expanded lanes, straightened curves, and replacement bridges (WSDOT–I–90–Snoqualmie Pass East, 2016). However, in addition to those changes, they are also adding controversial wildlife crossing structures to the interstate that are intended to allow wildlife to get across the roadway safely without entering traffic. There are several benefits like improved genetic diversity of our wildlife, less injuries and death from collisions with them, and lower economic costs as result, but also many drawbacks such as high initial costs, predators exploiting the crossing structures, and the crossing structures not being used by the animals they were intended for. Some of the major benefits of the I–90 crossing structures are the increased genetic diversity of our wildlife, lowering our costs from collisions and less injuries and death from collisions. With fewer collisions with animals and allowing animals a safe way to cross the roadway, they are able to move more freely and safely between various populations of their species (Doughton, 2015). This allows them to breed with those they are not closely related to and makes the population more genetically diverse. Diversity in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Utilization Rates of Pedestrian Bridges in Kuala Lumpur Introduction Traffic congestion and air pollution are becoming growing problems in many cities in Malaysia. In order to discourage automobile dependency, and increase pedestrian activities particularly for short trips, the government has begun to promote non–motorized travel options by improving pedestrian facilities that promote an assured level of convenience, comfort, and security for potential users. One of the facilities that have been provided by the government is the pedestrian bridge. A pedestrian bridge or footbridge is a bridge constructed for pedestrians and sometimes for cyclists and bikers as well. It reduces the conflicts of traffic flow between the pedestrians and the vehicles by separating them. Hence, it helps in overcoming accidents and offers safety. However, due to the added travel distance, most of the pedestrians normally avoid using these bridges. This in turn, adds to traffic congestion and accidents that involve pedestrians. For the purposes of this research evaluation, the site selections are around the city of Kuala Lumpur.¬¬ Background to the Study Pedestrian bridges may offer safety and protection to the users but pedestrians often avoid using these facilities. According to the survey that has been conducted by H. Rizati, Siti Zaharah Ishak, Intan Rohani Endut (2013), this is due to several factors. They are the added travel distance, the location of the facility, and the vehicle volume. Pedestrians prefer to utilize pedestrian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
