Jee Yeon Park began their design technology project by measuring and marking out the circular base with a compass. They then cut the base from plywood using a crosscut saw and jigsaw. The jigsaw allowed them to quickly cut the circular shape. Since the jigsaw left some rough edges, Jee Yeon used a disk sander to smoothly sand the sides. They felt they gained knowledge using different tools, including new machines like the jigsaw, and took risks in their work.

Title: Beginning my project
Measuring and Marking out the base
Today, I started to begin my project. I went into the
workshop and began to choose the type of wood
that I wanted. First, I decided to measure and mark
out the base. My base required plywood and the
size of the base was 300x300x30. Since my base
was in a shape of a round circle, I had to use the
compass to measure and mark out. At first, I
stretched out the compass in the measurement of
150, which is the radius of my base. While marking
the base, I was had to use a metal rule and pencil to
make the piece of the base accurately. When I was able to make a thick line for the base, I started to go
to the next stage, cutting.
Cutting the base with the jigsaw
After measuring and marking out the base, I was able to go to the next stage where it was the cutting
stage. At first, I used the crosscut to cut a straight line so that my base was cut from the big piece of
plywood. It was my first time to use the crosscut and this tool helped me to cut a big piece of wood with
ease. When I got the square size of the plywood, which had the circle drawing of my base, I was able to
use the jigsaw machine to cut out the circle. In today’s lesson, I learnt this new machine called ‘jigsaw
machine’. This machine was used for cutting a thick piece of wood with short amount of time. Rather
than cutting the circle with a coping saw, making us to spend more time, we were introduced to the new
machine so that we could use the time wisely. I thought that this machine was helpful because I could
get my base cut really quickly. When I was done cutting with the use of the jigsaw machine, I started to
go the next stage, sanding.
Sanding with a disk sander
Since the jigsaw machine didn't help me to cut the base accurate, I had some parts where it was rough
and bumpy. In order to make the surface smoother, I used the disk sander. Disk sander was much faster
than sanding with a sand paper with my hands. While I was using the disk sander, I was wearing an eye-
2. goggle to prevent dust entering in my eyes. In a short amount of time, I was able to finish sanding the
side of my base.
IB Learner Profile & AOI
From today’s lesson, I was able to finish cutting out my base. I think I was knowledgeable and risk taker
because I was able to use different kinds of tools and new machines. I used the compass to measure
and mark out the base. Also, I was able to use the new machine called jigsaw machine so that I could
reduce the amount of time spending to cut my base. I think the lesson that I had today was related to
human ingenuity because I started to create my project with variety of kinds of tools and materials.
