Editor's Notes
Hi. I’m Jackie Taylor, COABE’s President, and with me is my esteemed colleague, Tom Nash, our President Elect. Many of you have asked me, so are you COABE’s Executive Director? Is this your full-time job? Like the 34 presidents before me, I’m a volunteer.
All COABE board members give generously of their time and talents in order to help advance our profession and take it to new heights. And in partnership with you, we want to do just that.
So what is COABE? COABE originally was a branch of the AAACE from 1972 – 2000, then separated from AAACE and became incorporated in Florida. Since that time we’ve grown tremendously. We advance our work in four key areas:
Leadership
Advocacy
Communication
Professional development
We have membership in all 50 states. COABE has grown since 2009 from 1,300 to over 13,000 strong due to our large group memberships. The COABE Conference has been held in 22 states over the last 30 years, including the state of Alaska.
Contributing time and talents, travel not required
I’d like to take a few moments to invite your comments about COABE.
(Jennifer, Mike, Brad, Art)
Our online repository consists of presenters’ materials over the last three national conferences.
Our journal has been contributing to the research base and peer review in our field for over 35 years.
Our Talent Bank provides the opportunity for local talent to volunteer their time and talents with no travel required. We look to the talent bank for special projects that arise.
COABE has given back to the field over $250,000 in awards, incentive grants, scholarships, travel stipends, and conference registrations in the last 10 years.
Awards
Award Recipients Receive $1,650 Recognition at the COABE National Conference Awards Banquet
Successful Nominators Receive complimentary conference registration for the annual COABE national conference where the award is presented.

COABE Incentive Grants
COABE provides incentive grants which support activities or projects in the field of adult basic education through the secondary level. The best practices gained by the incentive grant winners will be archived in an online repository as a resource for the literacy field. The overall purposes of the grants are to promote:
• Field-based, practitioner-developed activities for student/faculty growth• Program improvement through enhanced curriculum, instruction, assessment, counseling, student services, research/evaluation, or community involvement
Scholarships
Scholarships from COABE fund, or partially fund, college level courses of study that will advance the professional standing of COABE practitioners. Examples of scholarships include employees or volunteers in the field of adult basic education earning a degree or a state certificate/credential; obtaining an ESL certificate; teacher/counselor obtaining counselor/administrative credential; earning an advanced degree in adult education.
Hundreds of degree and credentialing programs listed – updating it this year and marketing it with our partner organizations, listed here.
Adds the practitioner perspective.
