The document discusses the influence of mass media on society. It argues that mass media, through various platforms, shapes people's perceptions of themselves, others, and societal structures. Americans come to understand political, economic, educational, and other structures through media portrayals. Similarly, media influences how individuals and events outside the U.S. are interpreted. The media also affects youth through both positive and negative portrayals of topics like sports, relationships, and substance use in television, movies, and music videos.

Internet becomes a mass media that affects our society's perception of ourselves and others and
influences the structures of our society as well as the reactions of the individual. Americans perceive
the political, economic, class, educational, and other structures of American society because of, by,

those structures outside of the United States are manipulated and directed by the media. Similarly,

Television and its self–directed version, cable, allow for the mass influence of these elements in
both positive and negative ways. The positive aspects of violence and competition within the
socially accepted structures of competitive youth sports and athletics promoted on TV and in video
games and equally, in the fashion, dance, and young love seen in sitcoms, movies, and MTV music
videos. Conversely, the use of junk foods, cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol combined with
irresponsible, casual sex, excessive and explicit violence dominate much of the negative influence
of media on America's youth. Joseph Dominic concludes, "that youngsters that are heavy TV
viewers would display a pattern of beliefs and perceptions consistent with media portrayals
(Dominick, 446). Regarding violence in mass media, again the young are exposed to a culture of
violence reflected in the media. How the media sells or promotes those perceptions is the "reality" of
the media. From a war somewhere in the world to the wars in someone's home, the media directs the
interpretation of what is necessary, correct, moral, and immoral. From what is happening, is not
happening, should happen, might and will happen, and what is and is not the cost the media
influences our realities and reactions. This has resulted in Saturday morning cartoons that are as full

5. Media 's Influence On Society
Media plays an important and influential role in society. The media effects so many different
institutions throughout a society that researchers have began to wonder how the media is really
effecting these processes. Over the years many models have been developed to explain this process.
The models that I will look at, include the hypodermic model, the mass society theory, the minimal
effects model, and the agenda setting and priming model. Before looking at these models, we must
first look at some of the challenges researchers ran into while trying to understand the media effect.
Many researchers believed that media had influence on the public, but did not change or have an
effect on what the public believed in. However this was false statement, "This idea contrasted
sharply with the public's general perception that media play a very influential role in society. There
are three major reasons for this gap in perceptions" (Graber 2009a). The first reason for this
misperception was because of how narrow researchers looked at the effects on media issues. An
example of this is when researchers looked at voters and whether certain media exposure would
alter their vote. They concluded that there was no media influence, but the catch was that these
studies were conducted during a time when party loyalty was very strong. This would be an
important factor in the reasons why media did not influence the publics vote. To gain a better
understanding researchers should have,

9. Media Influences Children's Behavior
Media can be described as the social and mass media that children are exposed to in their daily lives.
Examples of the media platforms and materials include radios and television broadcasts, movies and
music, newspapers and magazines, social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter,
Google Talk, Skype, among others (Samantha 2013). Media plays a critical role in the lives of the
children. It provides a socializing tool, educative and informative resources, entertainment,
marketing and advertising. Although the contents` and accessing of the media contents by children
are regulated, some of the contents of the media accessed by children indicate violence incidences
(Samantha 2013, p. 6). Exposing children to Violence contained in the contents of these platforms
may or may not influence the behavior of the children. The writer postulates that exposing children
to media violence has a negative influence to their behavior that develops a hostile and violent
behavior in the children.

According to the book published by Arnett, 2010, "Adolescence and emerging adulthood: A cultural
approach," she explores the social–cultural factors that influenced the behavior of the children as the
turned adolescents (Arnett, 2010). She identified that the leading behavior influencers were

Does mass media influence human lives so greatly that a self–inflicted 48–hour free period from the
influences of mass media such as television, social media, internet, recorded and live music such as
the radio, could have a measurable effect? As my personal journey into this experiment is laid out
the conclusion will become clear. Through removing forms of mass media such as radio, television,
internet and newspapers I have learned that indeed mass media is not easy to get away from, and it
has a deep impact on mood, response, and critical thought processes. Through a 48–hour period, I
consciously chose to remove all mass media influence, such as social media, television, radio and
recorded music, and in doing thus have come to some rather startling conclusions about the severe
and often silent effect that mass media can have on our lives. This was a rather difficult task as most
people never take the time to consider where and how mass media influences our daily lives, and
how deep the impact can be. The escape from radio is difficult, the desire to lose oneself in
television after a hard day is overwhelming and the sheer amount that we rely on social media is
harder still to understand unless you do without it for a lengthy period. While staying clear of these
forms of obvious mass media such as overt advertisements, or Facebook seemed easy enough,
though one can never be prepared to cope with the interruption of the thought processes and mood
changes that accompany this

Introduction The topic of how the media influence governmental issues is confounded, yet in its
most fundamental definition, the right response to it is this: It depends. Albeit early standard way of
thinking held that the media had solid, direct, supposed hypodermic impacts, later research gives
persuading proof that individual–level and logical elements essentially impact the degree to which
media influence individuals ' political conduct and convictions and, in the long run, open
arrangement. The plan of this examination paper is to serve as a prologue to a portion of the
essential hypotheses, bits of knowledge, and verbal confrontations about media and governmental
issues. In doing as such, it touches on issues of media possession, ... Show more content on

This is known as the commercial center of thoughts viewpoint. There are no less than two principle
lines of feedback to this methodology. To start with, numerous would challenge the idea of truth

quality clash, which in the last examination is beyond reconciliation. Consequently, there is no
hidden truth or major accord that might be uncovered through examination. In any case, it appears to
be uncontroversial that most civil arguments advantage from the procurement of real data and from
discourse of what suggestions diverse worth needs have in the approach zone within reach. In
present day social orders, this would be inconceivable without the media. There are, be that as it
may, significant worries about the degree to which the media give the data and point of view
important to a clever thought of the benefits and ramifications of arrangement. This lies at the
foundation of a complaint to the commercial center of thoughts as connected to present day social

helping residents divine it. In Graber 's (2003) words, "The bedlam of voices in today 's commercial

21. Media 's Influence On The Media
Being able to understand all sides of the story is very important when trying to pick a side. Today,
news broadcasters are notorious for providing everyone with bias news. There are six main news
sources which are called the Power House Networks; Fox news, ABC News, CBS, CNN, MSNBC,
and NBC, but unfortunately each one pushes a different political view. A good example is a current
event about the health care plan by which each powerhouse network pushes their political view.
News viewers tend to be oblivious when it comes to bias in the media because they would rather
hear what they believe is right. There are many ways to find truth in journalism that everyone needs

Most if not all of media is biased. A one sided world would be an example of a utopia or a "perfect
world" and in this case people are talking about a perfect society and media. Media is meant to
entertain and feed to all different types of people. For example, in politics there are people that are
in the left and right wing. Scholastic.com states that, the "Left winged people are liberal, moderates
are in the middle, and conservatives are on the right." When it comes to the media of course people
are going to want to tune into what appeals more to themselves. So if someone were to be a liberal,
the person would want to watch a network that would be more appealing to their preferences and
beliefs, to get their views validated.
Usually, media is controlled by one sided thoughts and people. When listening to the media people
are more than likely hearing only one side of the full story. The media is filtered through prisms that
are one sided because they want it to only come out one way, the network 's way. Bernie Goldberg
states, "you have a whole bunch of people who think alike. It's groupthink." Bernie also says " And
that's the problem with bias, not a conspiracy but too many like minded people making the decisions
on what the audience and the readers gets to read and see." The media can also scare you into
believing them. For instance, they tend to say that everything around us is lethal and is going to

How influential is the media today on society image? Media has made people believe that they need
an unrealistic body shape and standard of beauty. There are two types of eating disorders one is
called Anorexia Nervosa causing people to obsess about weight and what they digest. The other one
is body image subjective or mental image of one's self. Binge Eating are frequent episode of
consuming very large amounts of food without actions to prevent weight gain by self vomiting.

29. The Negative Influence Of The Media And The Media
Now days, the media has a negative influence on society, it targets the people that have progressive–
liberal values and elaborates on situations. It seems as if everything you say is being held against
you, and blown out of proportion by the news. The media does not honor the right for people to
have freedom of speech. Everyone should be entitled to their opinion, and be treated equally. The
media focuses more on making a story or statement, rather than sharing the truth. Lately, there has
been a huge debate on gun violence and health insurance. Most liberals feel we should be entitled to
have both. Conservatives have different feelings and they are pushing more towards gun rights,
rather than having health insurance. Health insurance should be our primary concern, there are many
people living without insurance. Either Health insurance is too expensive or someone doesn't
qualify. I recently read an article called "Cub Scout kicked out after asking senator a tough gun
control question" written by Daniel Politi. The cub scout was ridiculed by asking a question and
voicing his opinion to the Senator. The scout stated; "There is something wrong in our country
where Republicans believe it's a right to own a gun but a privilege to have health care. None of that
makes sense to me," he said. Marble responds to the long question by emphasizing the need for
"crime control" and pointed out that several shootings took place in "gun free zones."– Slate.com.

Media is a huge part of people's lives in today's society. Through different forms of media people
can now obtain vast amounts of information at the slightest touch of a finger. While it is convenient
and comforting to have access to so much data, the question arises. How much of this information
we receive shapes our lives? Mass media as an agent of socialization can prime and/or skew people's
belief system through mere exposure without the slightest clue of it affects. Mass media as an agent
of socialization can structure people's perception on society as a whole by simply using influence,
control, and trust.

Influence
Media influence is the force by which ideas are injected into people's lives shaping the very culture
of society. This influence is masqueraded through hidden media message, resulting in a change in its
audience which can be positive or negative, abrupt or gradual, short term or long term. Although
mass media's influential effect can reach a wide ranged audience as an agent of socialization the
responsibility to contain what it releases has not been of importance. "The media's socially
significant obligations are formally ignored." (A.S. Zapesotskii, 2011, p 9). Media messages can be
exerted through many different outlets such as TV shows, music, movies, commercials, news,

The powerful media is considered a leading influence in our society both directly and indirectly.
Media is available and readily accessible today more easily than ever. Printed materials, television,
sound recordings, internet, and radio all fall under the umbrella of the big bad – or seemingly bad
word – media. Is media bad? How is it controlled? And where does this all stem from...? These are
some of the major concerns parents are faced with in raising children in today's times. Although
most of our media appears to be superficial and meaningless fluff, violence and chit chat, it is also a
source of education, humor and non–violent entertainment. Both salesmen and individuals wishing

A study was conducted on 3,155 children ages 2–18, in regard to the impact of media on society.
The survey was done by The Kaiser Family Foundation, and independent national healthcare
philanthropy, and the results appeared alarming. Children ages 8 and above, 65% have a bedroom
TV and 21% have a bedroom computer. Of all kids, in all ages in our society 69% have a computer
at home and 45% with internet access. One of the many results researchers were surprised to hear
that of the children ages 8 and above, 61% live in homes without any rules regarding TV and
internet usage. Many researchers and educators were alarmed with the extreme results and the
percentage of time children spend watching television. They believe there is a connection between
too much media consumption and violence or acting out among children. (Barbour, et al, 2008)
(Clark & Blackwell, 2002) In the discussions regarding the influences media presents to our society
two important factors must be included. On factor, called media literacy was addressed by an

Media. What is it? How does it affect us? Why does it change us? Lots of people think that the
media of ours is a significant element in just who we're. Some people believe that it can alter an
individual throughout the lifetime of theirs. Through the years the press has experienced a severe
impact on modern society, an influence consequently astounding we do not detect its existence
sometimes. The media is essential to our civilization; we're many in the middle of the media. Every
& each day a lot of peoples connect to media of many methods. Media is frequently described as
signifying a channel of communication. We to be a modern society soak up press coming from a
multitude of forms, including the internet, billboards, newspapers, magazines, radio, and television.
Mass media influences individuals differently due to various quantities of formats and exposure. It's
a type of socialization, holding a long–term impact on each part of society. Because many people
use media very chronically, it's apparent to think it influences has on everybody. You will find much
more than one philosophical debate talking about the scope of how media influences people and the
society of ours. During this paper, I will explain the positive and negatives effects it has in today's
society, and how it impacts or self–esteem and also, if that should change. The type of media I'm

How does the media influence elections and politics
During the past 20 years, the media has experienced massive changes in terms of the platforms it
appears in as well as the audience it reaches. While traditional forms of media such as newspapers,
television, are considered to be more controlled, with the newly occurring and vastly growing online
media, information reaches more people and in a rapid pace never seen before. This essay will
describe how new occurrences have gained media the power to actively re–enforce (however not to
the extent of shaping) political public opinion.
Firstly, in order to understand the major influence that the media has on politics and elections, one
should understand what the term 'media' includes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And usually, once the public deems certain issues as of most importance, they are quickly initiated
to legislature. Going back to the Cold War and Vietnam, we can see how media coverage the
Vietnam War inspired peace movement activists to take over the streets and demand the withdrawal
of foreign (mostly American) troops from Vietnam.
Undeniably, political candidates and the media, have always had intense interactions. The world of
media and the world of politics have a "symbiotic relationship"; without the media politicians would
find it extremely hard to make their voices heard, while the media has a duty of encouraging
democracy and people's involvement in important matters, therefore media's involvement in the
world of politics is inevitable.
Curran wisely said; "Media owners and politicians are so interlocked (that) media can't be
independent" (2002.) A.J. Liebling also expressed his disapproval with his words; "Freedom of the
press is guaranteed only to those who own one."
Certainly, the changes in technology have affected our attention spans and focuses. News articles are
becoming shorter and are often dominated by visual content. Big fonts, bright and shocking pictures
win more "clicks", and it is not rarely that images and videos of politicians/political events are the
centre of intense discussion. Research has shown that visual communication conveys

"A Propaganda Model" is a conceptual framework presented by Noam Chomsky and Edward
Herman; they argue that the information displayed in the mass media is conditioned by wealth and
power, so as a result of the concentration of power and the official censorship done by the
government and corporate sources; the media follows the ideas of the elite. In order to deliver
messages that support the elite's beliefs, the media goes through five different filters that determine
the information presented, this are ownership of media, funding, sourcing, flak, and fear. First, when

Government and corporate sources have more access to the media because they subsidize the media
by making things easy for them, i.e. they give reporters advance copies of the speeches, schedule
press conferences at convenient hours, arrange photo opportunities, and by doing this they
consolidate their position as sources as well as gaining more control over the media's agenda and
framework. Any form of criticism – by the media or third parties – is less likely to be aired because
of the influence these groups have. Finally, the opinion of experts are other way of sourcing the
media, these experts can be managed by the government or corporate sources – they pay for they
research, hire them as consultants –, by the media – they give more access to publishing/exposure –
or they may take the form of "former radicals that come to "see the light"" (Kellner, p. 217). The
fourth filter in The Propaganda Model is "flak", in the authors' words, "flak refers to a negative
response to a media statement or program" (Kellner, p. 217), the ability to produce flak is closely
related to power and it can be direct or indirect. When the media is not following the economic or
political agenda that government, corporate sources or advertisers want, they tend to produce flak.

suitable they have the power remove it from the media. But more

The American culture of today is communicated through media. Media is the most powerful and
influential force in the country. The media are powerful agents of socialization and they set the
standard that majority follow. The power giving to American media has allowed them to be very
effective using propaganda as strategy, the media tend to say they serve to relieve social conflicts
into minimum. We clearly see that the media promote social conflicts by separating class. The image
that media has created in the mind of masses has economical, psychological and sociological impact
the masses. The intent of the media is to satisfy their own agenda, not to inform and entertain. They
been very successful using this strategy, more of their agenda less of the masses interest. Richard
Cohen once said "We are going to impose our agenda on the coverage by dealing with issues and
subjects that we choose to deal with."

Creative name: An analysis of the connection between the media and body image
Unrealistic body image and eating disorders are perpetuated by the media in women of ages 5–24
Every day millions of Americans view the front covers of magazines like Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and
more. They see them while at grocery stores, on the television, and even in the waiting room at a
doctor's office. The media offers advertisements with models that are seemingly slim with perfect
skin, hair, and teeth. American propaganda leaves most young, adolescent girls between the ages of
5–18 to consider that the complexity of beauty is strict to be thin and perfect, though it is targeted to
young adolescents, it does aim towards older female and male age ranges as well. An article states,
"While the media attempt to target every person, the level of exposure is dictated by gender, and the
majority of harmful messages are focused more toward women. For instance, in media such as
magazines where a person relies on an image to relate a feeling, girls are often made to look
inferior" (Chapman). When it comes to media, specifically in the American culture, the popularity
has massively increased over the years, turning to new weekly issues, becoming common to the
society and civilization. This causes issues associated with eating disorders, depression and suicide,

Statement of the Problem
The "Media" or medium is defined and described by encompassing television, music, radio, Internet
and the newspaper to effectively communicate to populations worldwide. With all these mediums to
ensure communication and information to communities globally, it has become a great staple in how
many conduct their lives and communicate to others. While many would suggest that we are to not
believe everything we read or see, could that mean that it has the ability to have a negative effect on
some? And if so what age, demographic or social group could be considered to be more vulnerable
to these effects?

also stated, "influences on body–image perception among participants take many forms. The main
influences were location or environment, family, friends/peers, men, individual psychology, cultural
background, race or ethnicity, and media imagery" (p. 305). Peers have a great impact with how
girls view themselves. Friends or peers are supposed to be a big support system and what they say is
greatly taken accounted for. Ethnicity can be correlated with friends and peers. Girls who have
friends that are of the same ethnicity may also have concerns with their body image, because they
are comparing themselves to how they look like. Alyson Kay Spurgas (2005) states that, "the
combination of ethnicity and media not only had a significant influence on the way a participant
perceived her body, but seemed to form the distinct origin of beauty standards for participants"
(308). Girls look at how their own ethnicity looks like and when this is in the media, it has a strong

because there are many types of media out there, including advertisements and television. The
media has this type of influence on people of all ages. The influence can be trying to sell a certain
item that children and teens would want or how to act or look a certain way. For this, this is why the
media has a huge influence on the attitudes and viewpoints of children and teens.
Children and teens now live in a world that is covered with media influences. In the Australian
Nursing Journal article it states, "Media sites provide young people with opportunities to stay
connected with friends, family and the world, and develop technical, creative and social skills"
(2012, Australian Nursing Journal). Before the influence of the media there was a time when it was
not really something that had a huge impact on children and teens. But as time has change, children
and teens are engaged with what the media has to provide such as reality TV to using social media.
Children and teens now have the access to every type of media influence and what affect it can have
on them. With the many types of media out there for children and teen there are concerns from
people such as parents and educators on how the media influence has on them. One of the concerns
that parents and educators think that the media has on children and teens is how children and teens

It has made an impact on the movie business where television can be used to see movies and mass

Cultural Products such as toy ads and vacation ads cater to children and adults. Most people feel the
same way I feel about the media on television that shows the commercials that capture the attention
to all. Some of us know the commercials rather than shows and the news it has taken over the
culture. I really think that the ads are better than some shows and anything else that comes on
television. It shapes the culture for children and adults, because it helps to find out your likes and
dislikes. Advantages and Disadvantages of ads is the desire of these products, that means the
commercial can be an advantage for mass media and the culture that help shape America.
Disadvantages of Ads is when it can harm people, have a recall and consumers do not know.
Therefore ads can affect or effect the cultures in America.
Movies has changed America, live in living color, it has showed and expressed the changes. The

Media Effect on Today's Youth Media plays a strong hand in the development of a child in society.
Youth are easily influenced and could think actions of unsavory morals are appropriate because it
was in media. This is a major problem today as the news make reports of children intentionally
committing crimes as big as murder. Children are experimenting with drugs and alcohol at an earlier
age and there is even a show dedicated to teen moms on MTV. Of course, media is not the only
force at fault here as peers and parents are just as much to blame as media. The media is full of
violence, sex and the use of addictive substances, that affects youth negatively. Being a youth in
today's society is challenging. On a daily basis, many positive and ... Show more content on

Teens have always been easily influenced by the idea of sex, but it has gotten out of control in recent
years. It becomes a problem when children as young as twelve or even younger is having sex and
doesn't even know the risk. Young men and women are displaying more mature qualities than a
twelve year old should. There is a running joke among social media, The joke involves the clothing
and behavior of students from older generations compared to this generation. How long ago a dress
or skirt that showed your knees was considered "trashy" and now shorter is a common fashion
statement even among preteens. The media help promote this as teens in media are shown following
this fashion statement. Cartoons are not absent of messages of sexual related content, but they are a
bit more covert about it. Teenage pregnancies are big problems and are even being used on
television for entertainment. As youth start experiencing the urge to have sex more with the increase
of violence, there is becoming a higher rate of youth rapes. The media does not cause these events to
happen, but there is a contribution that can be reduced that will benefit the youth of america better

85. The Influence Of The Media On Media And Media
1. Why is it so difficult to define the state of childhood? (w.180)
The state of childhood is difficult to define due to the conflicting views that are held within society.
As outlined in Creativity, Culture and Commerce (2015) children are considered a special audience
in relation to television and media consumption. This categorisation of this audience allows
childhood to be defined as a developmental stage in which youthful participants are considered both
'vulnerable' and 'corruptible'. These distinctive underlying connotations lead to an assumption that
children "must be protected," within media exposure and content (Potter, 2015: 3). In relation to
these media definitions society reflects these culturally and socially by linking the well–being of the
children with protection. As stated by the Australian Communications and Media Authority the age
bracket of a child is any individual "being aged under 14 years," (Potter, 2015: 7). This definition
provides insight into the factors such as the schooling age that govern programming within
Australia's media industry. Due to these diverse definitions childhood is a complex term that reflects
aspects of society through media and television consumption in which children are protected from
different forms of content.
2. What kind of role does the media play in children's lives? (w.191)

89. Mass Media Influence On American Culture
Major developments in the evolution of Mass Media
The new era of technology led to major developments in the evolution of mass media, worldwide. In
our society, we originally communicated orally before the Internet and wireless devices existed.
Individuals relied on traditional forms of mass media, such as the television, radio, newspapers, and
magazines, to attain knowledge of the outside world. Thereafter, the development of new forms
mass media evolved, and we were introduced to the Internet and other wireless communication
devices such as IPads and tablets, smart phones and social media sites. Regardless of the rise and
fall in popularity of certain forms of mass media, the evolution of mass media influenced the
American culture greatly.
Mass Media influence on American culture
The evolution of mass media has affected our social institutions: family, religion, morality and
education, on an unprecedented scale. For most of us in the American culture, the new forms of
mass media are entwined with both of our personal and professional lifestyles. Understanding how
the development of these forms of mass media has been and continues to influence our American
culture is vital. It will help us appreciate the role media plays in our life and will also help us to be
more informed as citizens, consumers, and employees. Barnett, 2004 noted that "The Internet is the

The way that diasporic audiences use media products to give them a connection to their country of
origin has been a topic of research for many scholars. The increasing ability to stream content online
allows people to keep the same routine in watching content and to watch content which they can
relate to and see themselves reflected in, often unlike the content on in their new home country.
Online news allows people to keep up with current events and look out for events that may affect the
ones they care about and improvements in communications technology allow people to connect
directly with the people they love more effectively. Media provides a way for diasporic audiences to
find their sense of self and identity in a country where they may not have a lot of representation.
Previous models of looking at diasporic audiences have been helpful in allowing us to see the
positive impacts that media can have, however they still continue to look at these audiences and
their lives as the 'other' which is a step backward in the diverse societies we live in.
Sinclair and Cunningham in Go with the Flow: Diasporas and the Media, discuss the way diasporic
audiences are often categorized by the scattering of people away from their home countries, while
still maintaining strong connections to them (18). These people may resist assimilation into their
'host' culture and because of this they may feel marginalized by the culture they have moved into
(Sinclair and Cunningham, 19). These

The Media Influences on Children
With the rapid development of computer technology, multimedia computer and network media as
the center of the modern media, the development is unstoppable. Modern media is a medium of
education and communication. Nowadays, it becomes increasingly important. Children contact the
media in a long time and the media resource is plentiful. They are acquiring new knowledge and
ideas through the mass media, and get a new way of entertainment. Social media has become an
important means on educate children. Television and computer as a modern media, they are the

Modern media has some bad effects on children. Modern media can guide children in the
inappropriate behavior. Behavioral scientist Steven Martino explored these very issues then gave
people some results. First, more sexual content that kids see on television, the earlier they initiate

V. New Media
In the course of the most recent couple of decades, the media scene has changed drastically. The
most essential change is from an old media model of television to another media model of
narrowcasting. TV alludes to media speaking to the overall population and is exemplified by system
TV, radio, and daily papers. Narrowcasting, made conceivable by television networks, Internet, and
satellite radio, is focused to particular gatherings of people.
The new media have various essential attributes that separate them from the old media. Initially,
there is incredible assortment in substance, both as far as broadness (the quantity of points) and as
far as profundity (the measure of data on such subjects). Old media had content impediments, forced
by contemplations of time and space. The new media have no such constraints. Second, the new
media have much more noteworthy client control over what data individuals are presented to. In the
telecast demonstrate, the media chose what data to transmit, and individuals had not very many
option wellsprings of data to go to. In the new media model, individuals have much more prominent
abilities to choose their own sources and to burrow more profound when they feel it is fundamental.
One worry that researchers have communicated about the new media time is that it might increase
officially existing variations as far as political information and cooperation (Prior, 2007). One point

Introduction The last several decades saw an explosive growth in new technologies, leading to the
adoption of the internet, mobile devices, and many others that allow easy access to information.
More than ever before, the latest news and breaking events are more accessible for everyone at any
time and place. The prominence of the media on people's daily lives, whether it is from a newspaper,
television broadcasts, to websites accessible from the internet, is even greater than before. There has
been concerns over the media in the past; many feel that its power and the potential to influence the
public should not be ignored. The emergence of new technologies, which allow easier access to the
different forms of media, means that these concerns are even more relevant today. The aim of this
paper is to explore one of the consequences of media influence on the public, namely, the concept of
"moral panics," and discuss and the importance of said consequence, as well as the motivations
behind them. The Influence of Media The media plays an integral role in connecting people to
others and the society. Whether it is in the form of entertainment, such as movies and television
shows, or news, the media helps to discover what is beyond people's own lifestyles and experiences,
whether the portrayals of society through the media's lens are accurate or not. In the context of
crime, often when the media inaccurately portray a crime, typically as an entertainment, it may not

The Mass Media is a unique feature of modern society; its development has accompanied an
increase in the magnitude and complexity of societal actions and engagements, rapid social change,
technological innovation, rising personal income and standard of living and the decline of some
traditional forms of control and authority.
There is an association between the development of mass media and social change, although the
degree and direction of this association is still debated upon even after years of study into media
influence. Many of the consequences, either detrimental or beneficial, which have been attributed to
the mass media, are almost undoubtedly due to other tendencies within society. Few sociologists
would refute the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is regarded as one of the first in the area of or notion that the mass media has an affect on the
societal attitudes and beliefs of that time.
This was soon follow around about a decade later in 1941 by Katz, Berelson, and Lazarsfeld who
also decided to research into the topic of media effects, a research which produced the now
commonly known 'Minimum Effects Model'. The main aspect of this research being to investigate
any possible link or factor that may influence voting behaviour. As has been described in numerous
literature it's 'discovery' was that the mass media played little or no part in the process of the
formation of any political opinion, attitude or preference.
They came to the conclusion that the biggest factor influencing people was not the media, but other
people. By the 1960's, there was a revival of Marxist attitudes, and so the work of Katz, Lazarsfeld,
and Berelson was largely dismissed in favour of re–examining the model of research into media
effects, due to the modifications the mass media had undergone in the post 1941 period, to consider
another way in which to investigate the influence and the effects of the media.

In today's age of technology, we are in almost constant contact with the mass media. Whether it be
from the portable devices it seems every person has or the TV that remains on throughout the day,
we are constantly absorbing the information they force upon us be it the good or bad. The ultimate
presence of the media guarantees that what we hear, see, and experience thru it will influence the
mind whether conscious of it or not. It is becoming increasingly clear that the media is one of the
most inseparable things from a teenager's life. "Teenagers are naturally curious. Faced with a
multitude of choices and challenges, they often look for direction and guidance on how they can live
their lives in today's society (Fox, 1999.)" Because of this, maturing children look to this as finding
out what is normal and acceptable or what is frowned upon and not accepted.
"The literature on the influence of media on teenagers is vast and most of them have focused on the
negative impacts. They seem to advance the view that the way youth react to situations, or their
mode of thinking is wholly based on the effect of the media, particularly television and movies,
music, videogames, and the internet. Youth in sense represents the age group between 13 and 20.
The outcome of media influences has largely been negative, especially since the above forms of
media have negatively influenced the behaviors and sexuality of the teenagers (Stern and Handel,
2001).

117. The Influence Of The Mass Media In The Media
Mass media has a huge influence on communities across America. There are numerous mass media
platforms like the internet, tv, magazines, and radio. Through the use of this platforms, messages are
able to be given to the public at a huge and rapid rate. Information can at times, however, be
misleading. Due to the fact that the media has a huge influence on the views of people, it is often
used as a way to deteriorate the image of a certain group or individual, underrepresenting them in
the entertainment business. In the 1950's African Americans were underrepresented in the media,
accounting for 6% of tv characters. Their numbers increased to 16% in the 1980's (Rodriguez 13).
That, however, has not been the case for the Hispanic/ Latino community. The Hispanic / Latino
community are underrepresented in the mass media, being portrayed negatively in their moments in
the media. This research began on November November 7, 2017. Online databases and books were
all acquired through the Augsburg University Library. I looked for peer reviewed sources in order to
make my research as credible as possible. The population interest were Latinos and the media
during after the 1950's. The process began by reading all sources and identifying the most relevant
information to my topic. As information was gathered, some of the sources that were of little to no
use were taken out of the research. When going through the information gathering while reading,
there was a lot of focus given on the data and its analysis done by the researchers. Once information
was gathered on one source, I would move onto the next. To organize the information gathered, it
was classified by focus. In example, if in two sources news coverage was the topic, they would be
grouped together. Once the information was organized and sorted out, the information was
compared and analysed. Than it would be put into the actual research paper. The research done gives
a general representation of the representation of Latinos on the media. In some states, this would not
apply as they have local Latino tv channels, ran by the community itself. Some of this information
was included in the research itself.

Abstract
The prevalence of crime is a substantial part of society. As a result, the development of punishment
has been essential in contributing to social order. Despite extensive research conducted into the
ideals surrounding crime and punishment, this research does not act as a solely relied upon source of
information for society.
Given its inevitable prominence within society, different forms of print and digital media have been
a major disseminator of information. As a result, this has allowed for it to continually influence and
develop a range of societal and political attitudes. This has led to the reform of legislation. However
this has also had impacts on societal understanding of the legal processes.
Introduction
In order for the law to be applicable, it is essential for it to reflect social values of that time. In
situations where the societal environment is influenced by extensive media coverage, questions
could also arise with regard to political responses, highlighting the extent of the media influence.

We are a world that revolves around our media outlets. This is because we depend on them to give to
us the information that we need to be able to live our daily lives. Whether it is the news on politics
or just events that are happening around your area. The real question though is has news changed?
And the follow up question to that would be; how do historians think news has changed? The news
media has changed throughout history because of the rise of technology. It is now possible to reach
people that back in the day went by hear say information. Today's historians view the change in the
media in different ways some think that the view on the media has changed because of the way we
are taught about the media, the way the media reports news and how political factors influence the
media. It seems like now day's people always have a negative view of the media but how is it that
the younger generations already have a negative view of the media. This is because we are taught to
have a negative view of the media. The media is not seen as a good thing but more like a necessary
evil. Historians view the media in different ways but some think that the only reason that we view
the media in such a negative light is because we are taught from a young age not to think highly of
the media when it is the only thing that we have to give us news. Even though we do not like it we

Media Influenced in American Culture Back in the 1920s people had receive news and
entertainment through the radio, which then in turn out–shined newspapers and magazines. Now
day's social media sites have become the most popular form to get the news and information. The
biggest tool in the media that generates revenue by the millions every day, is advertising. The media
has its way of showing us constructive information when it comes to news channels, travel and other
educational shows. Kids benefit from watching these, since it can boost self–esteem, heighten

133. The Roles and Influences of Media on Crime
In the political world, media has both a positive and negative affect. Americans as a whole are
engrossed with crime whether it be a fictional representation on a person's favorite television show,
or a true story the nightly news. The entertainment media influences our lives in consciously and
subconsciously, day in and day out, playing a critical and constantly cultivating role in the criminal
justice system and the conduct of politics.
How exactly does one determine what media is? According to your standard Google search on the
definition of the term, media is, "the main means of mass communication (esp. television, radio,
newspapers, and the Internet) regarded collectively." Broken down, this ultimately means that any
means by which information is spread can be considered media. Even from the founding of the
United States, freedom and active accessibility of press and media has taken a serious part in
American politics. It would be difficult to imagine politics with out the accompaniment or presence
of the media. The availability of political information through media resources has changed over
time with the advancement of technology and overall globalization of our modern world.

In Revealing Aphrodite, Nigel Spivey describes the nude Knidian Aphrodite of Praxiteles and its
cultural legacy in the understanding of societal expectations of ancient Greek women. Respected
women were depicted fully clothes, adorned with jewelry and sometimes presenting an offering to
the gods. Only sex workers, typically slaves or the educated hetairai/courtesans, and at times certain
goddesses, appeared nude in art, but these representations did not convey the same power as the
Doryphoros does for men. The common theme amongst all the depictions of women in art, is the
passivity of their nature. For instance, the Knidian Aphrodite catches the goddess in a moment of
vulnerability. Her shoulders are hunched, hand covering her genetalia in an attempt at modesty and
her passive posture does not inspire as much as the Doryphoros. The Knidian Aphrodite's body
language does not yield as much power or control to onlookers as the Doryphoros, but is meant to
entice and distract––as women are said to do. Spivey suggests this is due to the stigma against
women embodying Aphrodite, goddess of love and desire, and taking on the roles patroned by
Demeter, goddess of the harvest and motherhood (Spivey, 177). The juxtaposition of these
goddesses speaks to how it is up to women to, in a sense, bring themselves up by straying away

Humans have been a focus for marketers for over 100 years and at the rise of the twentieth century,
mass media became widely recognized. In a period of mass availability, people today have entry to
more media outlets than ever before. According to media scholar Jean Kilbourne,"the average
American is exposed to over 3,000 advertisements a day and watches three years' worth of television
ads over the course of a lifetime" (back cover). It is all around us, from the shows we watch on
television, the music we listen to on the radio, and to the books and magazines we read each day.
Media is the number one source for advertising. Advertising is "a manipulative enterprise that uses
subtle techniques to persuade consumers into accepting whatever sales pitch [that is] presented to
them (Blades, Oates, and Blumberg 3). The vast majority of people do not think that advertising has
any influence on them. To their surprise, "this is what advertisers want the general population to
believe; however, if that were true, why would companies spend over $200 billion a year on
advertising" (Kilbourne 33)? The media has full control to decide what the public sees and how it is
portrayed.
Some argue that people benefit from exposure to the media and it's advertising. The media "provides
us with most of our information about the political process" (Buckingham 5). Through news
channels such as CNN and Fox News, people are offered an opportunity to learn and develop their

connected society. With so many users connected to social media mediums such as Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram etc. it is very important that people understand how to properly analyze, evaluate,
and interpret media as well as develop the ability to create media. This, in essence, is what media
literacy is about and with so many different sources of information streaming through our daily lives
all at once, being media literate can not only help us discern actual facts from fiction, but it helps us
better understand some of the complex messages we receive from these sources. Throughout this
