HOMEOSTASIS
The cells can survive, if the temperature,
pressure and chemical composition of their
fluid environment remains constant.
The surrounding environment of the body
provides oxygen and nutrients required by all
cells of the body.
Homeostasis means standing or staying the
same.
HOMEOSTASIS
Homeostasis does not mean something set and stay
exactly the same all the time.
It means a condition that may vary, but which is
relatively constant.
Homeostasis can be defined as the stable state of
an organism or its internal environment as the
maintenance or regulation of the stable
condition, or its equilibrium; or simply as the
balance of bodily functions.
HOMEOSTASIS
There are three basic components of feedback
mechanism of homeostasis:-
a) Sensory mechanism
b) Control centre
c) Effector mechanism
HOMEOSTASIS
a) Sensory mechanism :The process of regulation
& the concept of “return to normal” first requires
that the body should be able to “sense” or
identify the variables being controlled.
HOMEOSTASIS
Specialized nerve cells or hormone producing
(endocrine) glands frequently act as
homeostasis sensors.
The sensors may respond to any change. If there
is any change, the nerve impulse or hormone
stimulates to transmit information to control
centre.
HOMEOSTASIS
b) Control centre: will receive input from sensor.
It will analyze and integrate the information &
specify the action. The control centre will send
its message to third part .i.e. effector.
HOMEOSTASIS
c) Effectors: are organs such as muscles or
glands that directly influence controlled
physiological variables.
For example, it is the action of the effector to
increase or decrease the heart rate, temperature,
B.P, sugar concentration etc.
HOMEOSTASIS
DETECTOR
(SPECIALIZED TEMPERATURE SENSITIVE NERVE ENDINGS)
CONTROL CENTRE
(GROUPS OF CELLS IN THE HYPOTHALAMUS OF BRAIN)
EFFECTOR
(SKELETAL MUSCLES SHIVERING)
BLOOD VESSELS IN THE SKIN
BEHAVIOURAL CHANGES ( PUTTING ON MORE CLOTHES,
CURLING UP)
