Power And Fear In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
In the book, "Lord of the Flies" By William Golding, power and fear are displayed because there have been fighting over power and control and
leadership. The two people who are constantly bickering about who gets to be chief, are Jack and Ralph. Their dispute is because of the conch.
With the conch being a major distraction because it makes the boys on the island go crazy and wild, it is also a powerful tool. Since it's a
powerful tool, it makes you be a witness to both sides of Ralph and Jack's perspective and ideas on being the leader on their deserted island without
any adults in their presence. When Ralph meets with Piggy, he also finds the conch and decides to blow it and he noticed that all the other boys
on the island came running towards Piggy and Ralph. "We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They'll come when they hear us"(15). At
that moment was when Ralph and Piggy realized that they can form a small society. They also recognized that they could use the conch of setting
everyone to listen to him. Later in the book, the conch was to be used as a talking piece and Ralph was elected to be the chief of the boys. "Who
wants Jack for chief?"(21). Nobody raised their hands for Jack except for the choir who later turned into Jack's warriors/ hunters. Then Ralph asked the
question again and said "Who wants me?"(21). Everybody including the choir raised their hands for Ralph but Piggy was the only one who didn't raise
his hand because he hesitated but

The Reflection Of Writing In The Sales Of Richard Rodriguez '
Activity 1A
As the story so often goes, I was once required to write, and thus I have been writing (largely under mandate) ever since. Although a Grandmother,
who I in my childhood stayed with weekly, spoke chiefly in Spanish, I never learned enough of the language to ever properly forget it. This is a
decision I've come to deeply regret in light of the book sales of Richard Rodriguez. My writing in adolescence was characterized by its being
profoundly uninteresting. The highlight was a highly directed poem concerning the creation of chocolate bars, only a poem in the sense that jury duty
is a form legal activism. To be resentful of the nature this sort of writing exercise however would be narcissistic to the point of supposing a person
who's sentience spans only two presidential terms would has had anything unique to say about chocolate bars, allowed the proper poetic license. I came
to much prefer reading over writing, as somebody had something to gain in that exchange. As it turns out, writing assignments persisted unabated by the
logic of this argument. Eventually becoming dissatisfied with the quantity of anachronisms in English, I would later go on to study the Japanese
language over 4 semesters. The highlight of this section of writing was a 12 sentence narrative about a thief boy, written by an American college
student at the level of a Japanese elementary school student.

What Is Apathy And Empathy
Sympathy vs. Empathy Empathy is a Key word in person–centered counseling. However, many people, even very experienced mental health
professionals can't explain the difference between the two. They believe they are being empathetic, when in reality, they are being sympathetic. So,
what is the difference? Let's review all four possible feelings Apathy – total lack of caring. Sort of like when an ant is crawling toward your lunch plate
and you smash it dead. This is apathy. You had no regard for the life of the ant. Pity– to feel sorry for someone without being inclined to help in any
way. Like when you see the mal nourished child from a 3rd world country and think, I am so blessed to be born in this country. In the world of mental...

No worries, all the dinosaurs were dead and gone. I learned how to counsel people. My professor, Dr. Justin Levitev from Loyola University in New
Orleans, was teaching counseling techniques. So, as is typical of such a class, we students were role – playing counseling sessions. Whenever the
counselor asked the client a "why" question, as well as other mistakes, Dr. Justin would ring a bell. I quickly learned not to ask why questions. At that
point, I also learned to not to ask "why" questions in my day–to–day life. Whenever I hear someone asking a "why" question, it is like someone racking
their finger nails down a blackboard (you know those old things teachers wrote on with dusty chalk until the late 1980's) – it sends chills down my
spine. Back to Why not ask why. Whenever we ask someone a why question, we are asking him or her to justify, defend or explain him or herself. I
hate it when people ask me, "Why do you live in Malaysia." I feel like answering, "Why do you care?" But sometimes you really want or need to
know why about something. OK, fine, just change your language. Instead of asking "Why do you live in Malaysia?" Ask "What do you like about
Malaysia." Why are you moving to a new house Why did you choose that University? Why don't you like him ? Why did you quit your

A Broadway Dream Book Analysis
Picture it. Broadway during the 1920s. Florenz Ziegfeld produces a revue called Ziegfeld's Follies. Girls appear in elaborate costumes bordering on
the risque. Gangsters are running rampant from Al Capone to Bugs Moran to Machine Gun Kelly. This is the world in which Agnes "Bobbie" Storey
finds herself.
Agnes' family lived in Leaholme until the war nearly closed their inn, forcing them to find work in London. Shortly afterward, her father dies of
Spanish Influenza, and Agnes is forced to find a job to help support her family. She manages to land a job at a restaurant belonging to a friend of her
father. It is here that she wins The Most Beautiful Barmaid in London contest. This sparks Andre Charlot to offer her a spot in his revue that is
traveling to Broadway. She immediately accepts, thus beginning her love affair with fame, success, and New York City.
A Broadway Dream by Jane Hill is a fiction based on the historical person by the name of Bobbie Storey. Amazon has this correctly classified as
historical fiction or biographical fiction; however, it was incorrectly classified as romance on OBC. The book is fairly short with only about 200 pages.
It may seem odd, but my favorite part of this story was the ending. I am not familiar with the history of the 1920s nor the life of Bobbie Storey.
Therefore when I read the ending, I was actually taken aback. To me, the ending contributed to the reality of the story. It's unfortunate that I cannot
share this ending, but I

Imagery And Their Mind Through Descriptions And Sensory...
Imagery is the use of language to create "mental pictures" in one's mind through descriptions and "sensory perceptions" (Wheeler). In"Digging,"
Heaney establishes the setting of the poem by describing that he is in what seems to be a room with a window that overlooks an area of green. He
starts the poem off with "Between my finger and my thumb / The squat pen rests; snug as a gun. / Under my window, a clean rasping sound
/ When the spade sinks into gravelly ground: / My father, digging. I look down" ("Digging"). He uses the appeals to sound, as in "a clean rasping
sound" and "the spade sinks into gravelly ground," as well as appeals to sight, "I look down," and appeals to touch, "[b]etween my finger and my
thumb," to create an image in the reader's mind of what that day, or perhaps thought, looked like. The image that is created is one that shows contrast,
in this case between an unidentified narrator and his father. As the poem continues, Heaney describes "But I've no spade to follow men like them.
/ Between my finger and my thumb / The squat pen rests. / I'll dig with it." The contrast that this furthers is the idea that the narrator is very different
from his father, creating a divide that can be the start of tension. Because the narrator and his father cannot necessarily understand each other due to
these differences, as each chooses his different approach to digging, the narrator seems to understand that not much can be done about the father's
choice to remain a

Fire and Ice by Robert Frost
Critical Question: Is there a theme to the poem "Fire and Ice" that many can still relate to today? The popular poem "Fire and Ice", was written in
in 1920. This poem was very controversial when it was first published. This poem seems to deal with the question "How will the world end?" Many
scientists have different opinions on not only when the world will end, but more specifically how it will end. This poem implies that when dealing
with the end of the world, it will end in one of two ways; in fire or in ice. Nearly 100 years later, this topic is still discussed today. When reading this
poem written by Robert Frost, many only take into consideration the literal meaning of his words, and do not take the time to analyze the meaning
behind them. Just as the topic of the world ending is still discussed today, the meaning behind the words of this poem create an interesting
conversation in today's society as well. What was truly meant by Frost's poem "Fire and Ice?" Was it written with only science in mind? Or, is there
further meaning behind the text that many can relate to today? This poem is a prime example of Frost's talent as a writer. Although it is only nine
lines long, Frost is able to portray great meaning in those short nine lines. Frost expresses the idea of different personalities and shows symbolism for
relationships in this poem. Frost's poem means so much more than deciding how the world will end. Frost suggests that you can tell one's personality by

Society and Technology in "The Anthem" Essay
Now–a–days, when we think of the future, we picture flying cars, and being able to transport. In the novel "The Anthem" society and technology as
we know it had been driven to an entirely new direction. The characters in the society do not have the right to speak freely nor do anything that they
wish. They lost all of their freedom, they couldn't even think for themselves. The society had to think as a whole, the word "I" did not exist in their
vocabulary. The society is very balanced, and everyone fears thethought of even questioning it. Up until one man known as Equality 7–25271 wants
the answers to all of his questions. The novel is expressed as Equality 7–2521's diary. All of his thoughts and feelings are shown in his writing, and...

One of the many benefits of having the novel written in a diary format, is that you get to really understand what the character feels about his
surroundings. Most of the other people in the society don't notice their setting nor do they have knowledge of anything else. Equality 7–2521 describes
his surroundings as being small and dark, all the buildings which are plain mark the housing of several different people. All the citizens of this society
are over–worked and tired yet they have no intention of complaining because they fear the punishment. This novel would not be the same if it was
written in any other form other then a diary, as well as if the novel was written in first person. It would not have to same effect on the readers. There
are so many diaries, but all are written in the first person, so "The Anthem" is unique. We get a better understanding when Equality 7–2521 writes in
third person, without it, we would only hear his thoughts and observations instead of the ones he has gathered from others. To illustrate, when he first
meets Liberty 5–3000, the readers were able to pick up some signs that she shows, these prove that she was a bit interested in him. But Equality
7–2521 in the other hand found himself very attracted to her, and as if to not make any obvious communication, he decides to admire her from afar
and she does the same to him. Equality later starts to call

Reflection Paper On Oppression
When I think of oppression, I think of racism, sexism, and classism. These three things come to mind when I hear the word oppression because I
think that they are the three most common ways of oppression. Racism is one of the most common forms of oppression. I see it every day and don't
even recognize it or do anything about it. Sexism, oppression against genders, is the same way. I talk about genders all the time and don't even realize
I'm doing it. Classism talks about where the wealthy and poverty line are in society. I normally choose to stay away from talking about Classism
because my family isn't rich but we aren't poor either. In this paper, I will be talking about how oppression affects the daily lives of people. For this
part, I interviewed one of my roommates and a good friend of mine to get their inputs on oppression. I also will be talking about the journal that I was
kept track of for this assignment. Lastly, I will include a self–reflection on how I feel about oppression. For the first part being the interview, I decided to
ask five questions. The only thing I told the people I was interviewing was this is a paper on oppression. The first person, person "a" in the
interviews, I decided to interview was a good friend of mine who happens to have a minor in HURL, who is a girl. The second person, person "b"
in the interviews, I decided to interview was my roommate, who is also a girl. Going into these interviews, I felt nervous asking these types of
questions with these people because I have never sat down and had an actually conversation about oppression with anyone before. Before I started
asking questions, I told the people that we were going to be talking about oppression and if they didn't feel comfortable about answering a question that
they didn't have too. I also told them that if they needed more information, that I would give it to them. To start the interview I asked the question,
"How would you describe oppression in your own words?" Person A answered with "Oppression is where individuals of the minority get frowned
upon because of their differences." Person B answered with "Oppression is the constant pressure put on a group of people caused by an imbalance of
power. Oppression occurs

Essay on Shakespeare’s Sonnet 73
Interpretation of Shakespeare's Sonnet 73
Sonnet 73 is a meditation on mortality, and yet it can be interpreted in a number of ways. The first such interpretation is that the author of the poem
is speaking to someone else about his own death that will inevitably come in the future. This interpretation has the poem focused on the author, and
his focus and concern over himself. This makes him seem very selfish, because we are all going to die sooner or later, and it does not do any good to
dwell on or complain about it. The only use that this interpretation really has is to evoke pity in the author, or the speaker of the Sonnet.
That is why it was this interpretation of Sonnet 73 that was used in a 1996 production of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Shakespeare' case, with all the talk about him and young men, he could be writing about any one of the Earls that he was "involved" with.
Another interpretation of Sonnet #73 is that instead of the Sonnet focusing on death, the theme of the Sonnet is the passing of youth. The Sonnet also
twists in its view at the couplet, it goes from being about the speaker's life to the addressee's life. This interpretation is from a note in the June 1948
Explicator. In the article R.M. Lumiansky argues that the "young person to whom the poem is addressed must inevitably grow old and experience
those things which the poet says, in the three quatrains, he is experiencing in his old age." So the focus is on the death of youth, and in the Sonnet,
using the metaphor of the changing of seasons very adeptly, attributes this characteristic to the speaker, but more poignantly to the person being
addressed being as how they are not yet in the fall of their life. In an article by John S. Prince, he says that the key to understanding the Sonnet lies in
the interpretation of "that" in the final line of the Sonnet. "The problem with the common interpretation of the Sonnet, which insists on the consistency
of the speaker's mortality as the topic, is the grammar of this final clause contradicts it. Why, if the speaker

What Is The Theme Of Once Upon A Time By Nadine Gordimer
Published originally in 1989, Nadine Gordmer's work titled "Once upon a Time" is a symbolic story about the death of white supremacy and the
subsequent birth South African society. The story centers on multiple themes which include violence, freedom, death, regeneration and the structure
of the fairy tale. Gordimer is a character within the story. At the beginning of the story Gordimer is asked to compose a short story for a children's
book. The person asking the question believes that it is Gordimer's duty to provide the short story. Gordimer refuses and rejects the idea believing that
she has a personal right to artistic freedom. She believes that no artist should be required or compelled to write on demand. Creating a work on demand

The best part of this short story is that it leaves the reader thinking about the action of the characters. "Once upon a Time" by Nadine Gordimer
pushed me to analyze what exactly happened in the story. When I first started to read the story, I did not think much about the plot. I thought the
story was about a family who was paranoid for no reason and the theme would be something insignificant. After I read that the child was killed, I
was taken back. It's as if I was walking up a staircase and suddenly one step broke causing me to tumble down. So after spending time rereading her
story, I thought the theme was very clever. The elements of irony, symbolism, repetition, and even climax tie together perfectly with each other to
form the theme of human beings creating their own self destruction. The best part is that the theme is also very applicable to real life. In the story the
parents were too focused on keeping their child safe that they lost track of what was important and caused their own self destruction after their child
was killed by the very same things they wanted. Humans do create their own self–destruction even if their intentions are for the best the end results can
be bad. There is no doubt that this is one of my favorite short stories as it was different and caused me to think and take a step back after I read

The Corruption Of The American Dream
Name: Jisha James Class: SYBA (B) Roll No: 234 UID No: 141124 Date: 29/01/2016 THE CORRUPTION OF THE AMERICAN DREAM. The
universal characterization of American dream is that, in the country, whichever person wants to be successful will be successful due to
self–improvement which can be attained by working hard and proper utilisation of the available resources, adding up with providential circumstances.
The Great 'Gatsby' emerges out as a personification of the American dream of self–made triumph, growing up from being a poor farm boy in the
Mid–west with no assets, to becoming a millionaire, having everything he desires to have including a great social circles attending his lavish
parties just in a few years. However his death, intends to warn about the debauchery and the decline of the society. America in 1920s was believed
to be a land of prospect, wealth and prosperity and only the good, righteous and hard working are rewarded. However the changing social conditions
had a lot of negative effect on the dream which was supposed to manifest to be one of the finest version of renaissance for America. The following
short stories portray the slow and gradual decay of the American dream. 'The Egg' by Sherwood Anderson portrays the many themes like we have the
theme of aspiration, surrendering, disappointment and finally happiness. The narration of the story is in the first person, where an unnamed narrator is

The Fault In Our Stars Analysis
A four–time New York Times bestselling author once said, "Please think about your legacy, because you're writing it every day." Even though we
all want to make a mark on the world, sometimes we fall into the trap of the routine of a typical day and basically "take a day off." While reading
this amazing novel you will realize you need to make the most of everyday and sprinkle positivity on the world. The Fault in Our Stars is a must–read
novel that teaches a valuable life lesson that holds true to all of humanity: a person's legacy is created by others' memories. In The Fault in Our
Stars, the author uses conflict to teach that a person's legacy is created by others' memories. For example, the author reveals to us that a person's
legacy is created by others' memories when Hazel says, ""I don't care if the New York Times writes an obituary for me. I justwant you to write one," I
told him. "You say you're not special because the world doesn't know about you, but that's an insult to me. I know about you."" This means that even
though Augustus Waters wasn't known like Superman or Batman, he was known by Hazel, and this was enough for her to know him for the small
infinity that they held. Consequently, this shows that your interaction with others' and the memories you share is your personal legacy. Additionally,
Hazel states, "I was so frustrated with him. "But this is all you get. You get me, and your family, and this world. This is your life. I'm sorry if it

Thou Famished Grave Analysis
Edna St. Vincent Millay's "Thou famished grave" and "Mindful of you" both include the themes of death, however, "Thou famished grave" uses the
personification of a grave as a starving beast, diction to add imagery of starvation, and an image of a strong will to live to show the resentfulness and
bitterness that the speaker has towards death, while, "Mindful of you" uses the imagery and personification of the four seasons to remember someone
close who has died, to express that although death may take people physically, but they live and are remembered through memories.
To begin, the speaker of the poem "Thou famished grave" presents a resentful and aggressive attitude towards death. The poem, addressed to a "
famished grave" (1), personifies a grave as a starving beast that can "roar" (2), "gnaw" (3), and has "dismal jaws" (7). This represents death in a
negative way because the description of the beast make it seem unpleasant and to be feared. Furthermore, the poem includes words and phrases when
addressing the grave that follow the theme of starvation, such as, "famished grave" (1), "Gnaw thine own sides, fast on" (3), and "I cannot starve thee
out: I am thy prey" which emphasizes that the beast of death is starving to take someone's life. This animal–like aggressiveness adds to the already
negative image of the beast. This imagery also shows how the speakers thinks of death since it comes from her words which shows that she sees
death in a very negative way. Due to this, the speaker is angry and does not want to give death what it wants, which is to take someone's life.
Additionally, although death is something normally feared, the speaker shows that she is not fearful by saying "I have no fear / of thy dark project"
(3–4) when speaking to the grave. She expresses that she does not want to die and her "heart is set / On living" (4–5), which explains her resentfulness
towards death. She also understands that death is inevitable as she says, "I cannot starve thee out: I am thy prey / And thou shalt have me; but I dare
defend / That I can stave thee off" (6–8). This shows that even though she knows that she will one day die, she still doesn't want to give death what it
wants and will fight as long as she can

Robin Hood: A Thief or a Hero? Essay
A thief considered a hero. He was an excellent archer. Robin Hood was a hero in his time. While many believe he was a thief and a villain to the
law, others feel he was a hero to the poor. Some people might say that Robin Hood stole from the government, and stealing is a crime, no matter what
your cause is. They might also say that if people in this day and time stole from the rich and gave the money to the poor, they would be arrested
because stealing is against the law. Finally, people who thinkRobin Hood was wrong in what he did might say that he betrayed his country.

Since the leaders of the government were corrupt, the people from whom Robin Hood stole were evil and villainous. When people today claim to
be a modern day Robin Hood by stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, it is an evil person stealing from the innocent. Robin Hood was a good
person stealing from the evil people. That's the difference. Robin Hood did the right thing by betraying his country. The things his country was doing
were evil and corrupt. (Lindahl 1). When your country is doing terrible things, like persecuting the innocent, poor people of the country, (Lindahl 1), it
would be wrong not to betray the country. They were also involved in charging ridiculous taxes and oppressing the common people of the land.
("Robin Hood: The Folk Hero" 2). This is yet another reason that Robin Hood had to betray his country. Fighting against the evil is always the right
thing to do whether you have pledged allegiance to them or not.
Robin Hood was not a thief. He was simply taking what was stolen from the common people and giving it back to them. The leader of the country was
the true thief. He charged outrageous taxes that the people could barely pay, and oppressed them when they could not pay it. ("Robin Hood: The Folk
Hero" 2). This is what makes him a thief. Charging outrageous taxes that almost no one can pay is unnecessarily and maliciously taking something that
belongs to someone else for your own benefit.

Compare And Contrast William Bradford And John Smith
The definition of this essay with be given to 2 writers in which are John Smith and William Bradford wrote different kinds of stories about their
journeys because of their different kinds of audiences that they had. The one who wrote a kind of orientated propaganda was smith as a third person
of himself. All this to have a higher place in a government and to bring more enlightenment to their world. John Smith's novels can be considered as
newer version novels. On the other hand William Bradford he wrote his narrative as a first person to show some association with some other people.
He interpreted his events to add to his religious beliefs. William Bradford was also considered as a Governor after what he did. Moreover John smith
called the native americans savages. In addition would have many interactions with the indians and those who could speak english to communicate with
him and because of their kindness he called them indians and allies.
Both writers Smith and Bradford agreed on the issue that the new world should be settled with hard working men to make the land look better by that
time. Another essential point was that John smith had a big dream of industrializing America and to conquer the natives. Much as uncommon as
WIlliam Bradford he wanted new england to be settles and a place for his people. WIlliams writings explained how the party animal in which was

from the beginning of the novel to his death (murder). Boxer is unwavering in his devotion. Even when the windmill is destroyed and it is time for
Boxer's long waited retirement he continues to strive forward and push his body to the max showing loyalty to Napoleon time and time again,
reflecting his other motto "Napoleon is always right". The point of view used throughout the novel is third person omniscient. This allows for an overall

Furthermore Atticus is so devoted that he is stabile to Tom's case even though the threats from the community continue to pour forth and become
more intense. The point of view, being narrated by Scout in first person allows the reader to see the loyalty portrayed from the perspective of an
innocent little girl. This is important because had it been from the perspective of someone else the reader would not have been able to experience
the effect it had on Atticus from a first hard perspective of his daughter. An example of loyalty can be directly taken from William Shakespeare's
"Romeo and Juliet". However, Shakespeare's play showed that loyalty can be taken to extremes and result in conflict and tragedy. The biggest case
of this "extreme loyalty" was brought out in Romeo's suicide after thinking that Juliet was dead. As Juliet was so loyal to Romeo, she faked her own
death to get out of marrying Paris. Even though she was somewhat forced into that position, it was still an irrational act. Romeo makes it worse by
committing suicide on seeing what he thought was Juliet's dead body. His loyalty was so extreme that he wanted to join her in death. While pressure
from both their families drove them to their final deadly decisions, it was their extreme, irrational loyalty to each other that caused the tragic deaths of
both Romeo and Juliet. Although to the reader it might seem absolutely illogical to commit suicide to get out of a marriage in order to

Prediction of Age, Gender and Personality Traits Using Facebook Data
Manali Bhalgat
Introduction
In the last decade, social networks like Facebook [1] have emerged as popular medium of social interaction and information dissemination. From a
social web data mining perspective, Facebook stores a wealth of data about people and their interests. As more and more users are creating their own
content on Facebook, there is a growing interest to mine this data for use in personalized information access services, recommender systems, tailored

In this section, we discuss the recent research work related to techniques for predicting age, gender and personality based on the information available
on social networking sites. Most studies predict personality from the language used by a person to update status or chat in social network.
According to recent works based on study of function words such as pronouns, conjunctions, articles and prepositions, the elderly use more future
tense words and pronouns in their plural forms. The same studies show that males use more articles and females make heavy use of first person
singular pronouns. In [7], the authors state that even with its challenges, text categorization is a reliable approach to identify the age and gender of
people in social network communication. Goldbeck et al., in [3], show that people of different age groups talked about different topics. For example,
those within the age group of 13 to 18 mostly discussed activities related to school, 19 to 22 year olds talked about university/college.
Many efforts have been made by researchers to analyze the words used by humans to understand their psychology [2]. Public information of a group
of Facebook users was collected by the authors of [6]. They were able to predict the Big–five personality traits of the users using this data within 89%
accuracy.

Analysis Of Gloria Anzaldua 's Poem, The And English, A...
Southwestern America is home to numerous cultures, all of which intermingle and interact on a daily basis. This creates a wealth of literature and art
from the perspective of those who live with such a variation of experiences. Authors and artists experiencing the culture associated with being a part of
many communities show the culture as they see it through their work. One such author is Gloria Anzaldua. In her poem, To Live in the Borderlands
Means You, Gloria Anzaldua reveals her identity as a multicultural woman and the struggles that she faces in doing so. She relates this through the use
of Spanish and English, first person perspective, and gender. Acculturation was first defined by Redfield and colleagues as "a phenomenon which...

Initially, the sight of Spanish within a work that is primarily English is unexpected, forcing readers to take a moment to fully comprehend the text.
Anzaldua's use of Spanish utilizes this quality, but it also demonstrates her flexibility in language and the way that both Spanish and English play
important roles in how she identifies herself. Both languages are a part of Anzaldua, and applying them acknowledges her refusal to conform into
one simple stereotype or idea. The poem is written from the second person perspective, placing the reader into Anzaldua's viewpoint. Anzaldua
could easily employ first person perspective, using the pronouns "I" or "me" to describe her experiences, yet she did not. Instead, she uses the
pronoun "you." This is a bold choice that forces readers to see Anzaldua 's experience from her viewpoint. Second person perspective is evident
before the poem is even read. "To Live in the Borderlands Means You" is both the title and the phrase repeated in some form at the beginning of each
stanza. Such a strong statement acts almost as a call to action that captures readers and tells them of the experience of living in the borderlands. Each
stanza frames the reader as the person experiencing life as Anzaldua experiences it, creating a more intimate relationship with the text. First or third
person perspective creates a narrative setup in which the poem is directed at the world around the reader, giving them a view into the poem

Paraphrasing is more acceptable and should be done frequently, again with appropriate references of the author's name and publication date.
Should several paragraphs be from the same reference, each paragraph needs to have the reference at least once, usually after the first or last
sentence. However, it is appropriate to use multiple references in a paragraph. When this is done, place the reference after each new reference so
that the reader knows from where the information came. It is critically important to look up the format for referencing in text as well as at the end of
the paper. Several variations exist depending on the type of reference, the number of authors including the use of et al., and whether or not you are
quoting from a paper document or an Internet source. In addition, the way in which quotes are used varies depending on how the quote is framed in
the sentence and depending on length (especially if more than 40 words). For each reference, look up the style in the manual until this information is
memorized, which will not take long after writing several papers in this program. For the reference page, notice every comma, every use of
capitalization, italicizing, and other formatting issues. This is where new students make the most amount of errors, especially with the issue versus the
number on journal articles. Finally, it is crucial that you check the references in text and compare them

The Biological View Of Eric Olson's Biological Theory Of...
The biological view is a view that Eric Olson does stand for. Looking back at the standard view, Olson claims that the view may claim that persons
did not come into the world first as an embryo, but instead as a full developed fetus . Once again, this view contradicts Olson's views. He believes that
people were once an embryo. This brings about his biological viewpoints. Olson claims that people were statistically identical with the fetuses and
embryos in their past. Of course, this view would bring about the question as to whether personhood is worried. If one was once an embryo or a fetus,
then what type of mental properties did they hold? Lynn Baker contrasts this view in her reply to Olson.
Eric Olson also did some experimental activities to better state his biological views. The first view he used was about upper brain obliteration. This
experiment was thought out with regards to exponents of the Standard View. In summarization, if the cerebrum of a brain was destroyed, but the brain
stem and autonomic nervous system was still in tack, one would still be alive. He then asked if, in this states, would one still be a person, even if one
was not fully "there". This experiment contradicts the Standard View because one could survive this as an organism but not as a person. To me, this
explains that the Standard View defines personhood as one who can have mental thoughts, which then would claim a person to be an organism. The
other "experiment", or biological view, that Olson looked into was in regards to a fetus human vegetable. Human vegetables are people who do not
have a functioning cerebrum. Specifically, a 5–month old fetus with a dead cerebrum, according to the standard view was not a person. A fetus, is a
potential person, while a human vegetable is not a possible person.
As one can see, Baker spent a lot of time depicting Olson's views. She specifically explained by she rejects this, and the fact being that other
philosophers would also rejects his biological view. As conferred above, of the main factors that one could take away from Olson's view is that
humans are organisms that become persons. Baker looks at this specific view of being only an organism as something that is not of importance. She

Analysis Of The Morning Song By Sylvia Plath
The morning song 'Morning song' by Sylvia Plath describes the birth, early stages of childhood and the sentimental value of a child in a very
unique way. This poem was wrote from Sylvia Plath's own experience of child birth, it can also be related to by parents, it could be thought it is
aimed mainly at females as this poem is quite feminine. This eighteen line lyrics is structured in 3 line stanzas which are called tersest. It is a tender
poem and the overall tone of it is quite mellow. The opening line of the poem 'love set you going like a fat gold watch,' this literally means the
physical act of making love, and that the act had created the child. The adjective 'gold' could signify that her child is precious and very high in value,...

She also talks about this when she says, 'a mirror to reflect its own,' that is to do with reflection and talking about the future as you are your own
person. The 'cloud' could be the child fleeting away, just like clouds slowly float away. 'All night your moth breath,' baby's breath really softly, it's
almost unnoticeable. She isn't comparing the child to a moth looks wise, but more of its characteristics like its tiny movements and the fragility of
them. The 'flat pink roses' is the bed sheet the child is laying on and 'flickers' is it's small moth like movements. The sound of her new born
breathing is being compared to a 'far sea' moving in her ears, the comparison with nature expresses the beauty of her son. As soon as she hears the
child cry she has to get out from bed, she uses the verb 'stumble' which could mean that she's really drained out and tired from giving birth as this may
be the first morning after she had her child. She has to get up with her 'cow–heavy' breasts which is referring to carrying breast milk. Floral images are
mentioned again, she's wearing a floral Victorian gown; this makes the imagery

The Castle of Otranto Essay
In the book The Castle of Otranto the people of the castle are surrounded by unexplainable events. These events are in most cases damaging to one's
own mind. Those who are seen as great and loving are turn in to violent and unpredictable individuals. Those who were affected include the highest
level of nobility, down as far as to the simple servant. While denial is shown by them there is no doubt that they have changed, and only in disastrous
ways. Weather the person has good intentions or not they are changed and their intention becomes what they do. A corrupt power which cannot be

thinking that it would be a faster end to the prophecy as well but, this is not accepted by his wife. He has lost complete control over his thoughts and
his actions. When people react to unexplained events, disaster follows such as with Conrad's untimely death. Conrad the son of Manfred is killed by the
fallen statue head in the courtyard of the castle. He was killed on impact. "Conrad, the son was three years younger, a homely youth, sickly, and of
no promising disposition."4 After learning of this unexplainable event Manfred does not believe what he saw. "Miraculous helmet one exactly that on

Hamlet Compared with Lady Lazarus Essay examples
Compare the ways in which Shakespeare and Plath explore the theme of mortality in Hamlet and Lady Lazarus.
In both Lady Lazarus and Hamlet the semantic field of mortality and death can be clearly seen. Hamlet's second soliloquy, 'To be or not to be' can be
found in act three, when Polonius and Claudius are hiding behind a wall listening to how Hamlet responds to Ophelia. Although there is a huge time
difference between when they were written it is surprisingly similar in its semantic field of vocabulary to Lady Lazarus written in the 1950s by
Sylvia Plath. There is also a huge difference in the type of genre that the texts are and the intended audience for them. Hamlet was intended to be
performed and so has many more emotions expressed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Hamlet does not see this as a negative thing as that is what he wants, as he expresses an emotion that is similar to his first soliloquy. The
poem Lady Lazarus is similar to this as the persona views death as the final place and where she will eventually die as she says: "Flesh, bone, there is
nothing there–". This shows that she views it as final and the fact that there is nothing beyond.
However, there are also some differences between Hamlet and Lady Lazarus. In the poem, the persona keeps referring to her body as individual parts
and so has connotations of the fact that the persona is not one person, but many objects because the persona expresses it this way;
"The nose, the eye pits, the full set of teeth?
The sour breathe
Will vanish in a day."
This shows that she is also dehumanising herself and using a metaphor to make her appear as an object rather than as a person. She also knows that she
can transform into something different and achieve her mission of suicide if she wishes as she uses the simile "And like the cat I have nine times to
die." This shows that she can die more than once, whereas in Hamlet, Hamlet wants to die and never come back as he says that he could kill himself
with a dagger, through the saying
"When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin?..."
He continues to say something and it seems as if for a minute he has forgotten about the ghost as he thinks that death is the end as he says

Position As A Writer By John Edgar Wideman
Position As a Writer
John Edgar Wideman begins his piece, Our Time, with a description of the world he grew up in. He takes the reader through the story of his brother,
Robby, using a variety of voices and points of view. In this narration of his brother's life he brings to light his own dilemma withwriting the piece. He
uses a variety of voices and points of view to demonstrate the different perspectives of Robby 's story. To contest the ethical dilemma of telling
someone else's story without exploiting it, Wideman addresses the issue head on. By reading Our Time, a writer could learn much from Wideman, and
adopt a number of his methods for different writing styles.
One of Wideman's main writing methods is his use of multiple voices and points of view. This becomes apparent even in the first page of the text.
Wideman introduces his essay with a letter. It is not addressed to anyone, neither is it signed, but, it is written as if every character in his story was
speaking. The tone is his own, the subject is his brother, Robby, and parts of the letter reveal advise from Garth and his mother. This presentation of a
multi–narrative style is present throughout the essay. It gives the reader a sense of authenticity that cannot be achieved through third person narration
because it places the audience in the mindset of the person speaking. By switching points of view, Wideman is providing the reader with multiple
perceptions of a scenario, giving a different lens of analysis

The Giver By Lois Lowry
Title: The Giver
Author: Lois Lowry
Illustrator: No illustrator
Genre: The genre of the book is scientific fiction. It is scientific fiction because Lois Lowry made a setting where everything is unusual than the things
we do now. There are birthmothers, rarely Receivers of Memory ( which Jonas turns out to be ), and other special jobs in the community center.
Point of View: The point of view in the story is third person because if there was a first person, the narrator ( which is a person that is involved in the
story ) should be saying personal pronouns which are not in the book.
Protagonists: The Giver and Jonas are the main characters. They are the main characters because The Giver and Jonas were either previous chosen
receiver or an already chosen receiver ( which is Jonas ). Jonas learns information of being a receiver, while the previous receiver ( The Giver )
teaches him how to be a good receiver ( while nobody in the community should know nothing or anything about they both do in the annex room ).
Antagonists: The Giver and Gabriel ( the new child boy ) are the antagonists. The Giver is an antagonist because he's the one that gives Jonas his pain
/memories because of what he saw in his mind. Gabriel is an antagonist that gives Jonas reacts to his actions like in the night when Jonas needs to be
disturbed and pat his back.
Setting: The setting in the story is idyllic. Idyllic is where Jonas was born, raised, and lives. The setting is also at Jonas's house and at his

Essay on Comparing Love after Love and This Room
Comparing Love after Love and This Room
The two poems with which I compare each other are both poems of celebration. Celebration of life, love and your identity. The first is
"Love after Love" by Derek Walcott. This poem is about self–discovery.
Walcott suggests that we spend years assuming an identity, but eventually discover who we really are– and this is like two different people meeting
and making friends and sharing a meal together. Walcott presents this in terms of thelove feast or Eucharist of the Christian church – "Eat...Give wine.
Give bread." And it is not clear whether this other person is merely human or in some way divine, this is also an imperative which would suggest that
they are divine and so have a

The first line in "Love.." is,
"The time will come
When, with elation,
You will greet yourself arriving,
at your own door,"
a line foretelling that eventually you will recognise who you are.
Whether this will take a mirror or whether a person will realise who they really are through their own head and deep inside their own souls. It also
suggests that you shouldn't care about others opinions with the line " in your own mirror.." which makes you wonder "How do I see myself?" which
I thought could be trying to question basic human ideas, why do people look at who they are in the first person, why is the person whose eyes they see
through them?! What makes them that individual? The answers here are clear, a love for life, for one's self and what they feel within their soul. Both
poems, I felt used techniques to suggest being unique. For example, In "This Room" the author uses extensive use of caesura, using punctuation in the
middle of a line, and enjambment, a technique by which you don't use normal punctuation at the end of each sentence, thus creating a flowing and
textured piece of poetry. With these techniques, Dharker has created flowing text, I think that this might be a suggestion that life flows quickly and that
you should take advantage of it because of this.
The second stanza suggests that one

Asian American Identities Of Asian Americans Essay
Despite the fact that Asian Americans have been in Hollywood for decades, there are very few positive representations of them in film. More often than
not, they've been depicted as stereotypical caricatures, and more specifically, as foreigners who can't speak grammatically correct English. Moreover,
the negative representations of Asian Americans in film has perpetuated certain misconceptions about their culture. Chan is Missing (1982) calls for
more genuine representations of Asian American identities through its cast of complex characters and defiance of Asian stereotypes. The film also urges
its viewers to critically think about their own notions of identity through the use of several recurring themes and filmmaking techniques.
Asians aren't represented often in Hollywood films, but when they are, they're usually confined to stereotypes or one dimensional character traits. In
Chan is Missing, however, though the characters may at first seem as black and white as the film itself, by the end, many of the characters are well
developed and seem like real people. This is conveyed through the film's simplistic cinematography as well as the casts' naturalistic performances. The
camera seems to have both an ominous third person and, at times, first person perspective. This almost documentary–like cinematography coupled with
the actors' performances make the story seem much more genuine and interesting than many conventional films. The film also punctuates the
complexity of its

A Summary Of The Language In Antony And Cleopatra
This passage, taken from William Shakespeare's play Antony and Cleopatra, shows Octavius Caesar discussing with Lepidus about what they should
do about Antony whom Caesar thinks at this moment in the play is currently frolicking with Cleopatra, the pharaoh of Egypt, instead of doing his
duties. The passage also contains accounts from Caesar about the man Antony once was as well as his vivid opinion on Antony's current state. This
essay will analyse the language, form and the tone of Caesar the passage as well as examining its significance in relation to the rest of the play. The
entire passage is written in poetic form which emphasises not only the power and position within the Roman hierarchy Lepidus and Caesar are in but
also that they very much act like Roman leaders. It creates an aura of pomposity around them and that they lack a certain humbleness that characters
such as Enobarbus possess as, up to this point, he has spoken in prose. The poetic form also sets up that they are very much equals to Antony and
Cleopatra due to them speaking in poetic form in the previous scene. This equality foreshadows the rivalry and antagonistic behaviour between Caesar
and Antony due to them being similar and yet different. This pomposity is furthered when Caesar, while speaking in the third person, lays out the
recent actions of Antony. The manner in which he describes these actions ('he fishes, drinks, and wastes/The lamps of night in revel') sounds as the

Lab Report On Corpus Christi
Several species and organisms rely on water to survive. Some organisms use it as a source to drink and others uses water as their living environment.
This experiment is to calculate many aspects of the water that surrounds Corpus Christi. Water is the key to life on Earth and thus why water is so
important. According to the Lab Report water quality is the quality of water and if it is considered acceptable drinking water. Water quality consist of
its chemical, physical and biological characteristics. These properties can be studied through pH testing, nitrogen testing, Phosphorous testing and
many other useful ways. Water quality is important because it allows scientist to identify if the water is in a good condition to drink or sustain life
overall and it dramatically effects how healthy it is. The objective of this lab was to experiment if the water quality around the Corpus Christi is a
reliable source of water for organisms and to reach an understanding of the water quality of the water surrounding Corpus Christi.
STUDY AREA
The location of the water sampling was in three different areas known as the Ward Island, Oso Bride, and Packery Channel. For the Ward Island
and the Packery Channel were both well cleaned and little to no trash in the property. As for the Oso bridge the location was surrounded with
unwanted trash. Shown in figure 1 is a variety of trash that interrupts the growth of organisms in the location throughout Oso bridge. The Oso
bridge had several small like rocks throughout the location, while the Ward Island consisted of sand, and the Packery Channel had a variation of
mud and sand. The weather was fairly similar in all locations especially the Packery Channel and the Oso bridge because the experiments were
conducted on the same day. The weather for all consisted with an average of 80 degrees. For all three experiments the wind was blowing somewhat
fast at a speed of 15–17 miles per hour.
MATERIALS AND METHODS

that can result from a catastrophic event, such as the death of a loved one or the demise of a friendship or relationship. In "The Five People You Meet

progress, Eddie individually meets five people in heaven who, unbeknownst to him, all performed a fundamental role in shaping the course of his life. In

Due to the catastrophic loss of blood, Eddie was airlifted to a hospital, separating himself from the remainder of his unit. His unit later went on to
die after driving over a landmine, rendering Eddie the only survivor of his unit. For a lifetime, Eddie perceived his handicapped leg as a burden
and a nuisance, not fully understanding the bullet in his permanently impaired leg is what allowed his life to continue on. At the end of the story,
Eddie meets the fifth and final person in heaven, a small, disfigured and severely burned Filipino girl. It takes Eddie a moment to realize, but the
small shadow Eddie witnessed moving within the burning hut was the little girl standing beneath him. He had unknowingly murdered a small
child. As Eddie began to fully comprehend the egregious act he had committed so many years before, he collapsed into a state of anguish and
utter despair, unsure of what to do. The young girl, a victim of Eddie's act of vengeance, not knowing much English, muttered a few words, saying,
"Children, you keep them safe. You make good for me" (Albom 191). Eddie always placed the blame on his father for him spending the rest of his
life working at the pier, but perhaps a small part of Eddie knew he killed a child when he burned down that hut many years before. Perhaps,
unconsciously, Eddie felt he had a duty to spend the remainder of his life at the pier providing an enjoyable

Forensic Linguistics: Case Study Analysis: Holmes V. State
HG4022 Forensic Linguistics – Case Study Analysis
In the case Holmes v. State (1986), Steven Holmes is a deaf–mute seventeen year old who was found guilty of second degree murder for stabbing and
killing Francisco Walker, a teacher of Edison Middle School. Holmes admitted to the offense and was sentenced to four years of incarceration and two
years of community control. During pre–trial competency proceedings, Holmes was found competent to stand trial. However, Holmes was unable to
"answer questions crucial to his defense" (Holmes v. State, 1986:233). Holmes' attorney requested for a re–evaluation of Holmes' competency but was
denied. Holmes appealed and the appellate court held that the trial court abused its discretion by denying the request. ... Show more content on

Additionally, third–person references may influence the court's judgements because such techniques bring in the interpreter's own voice (Angermeyer,
2009:5). Many guidelines provided by legal institutions have stated that the interpreter must always use the first or second person (Berk–Seligson,
2002:60), and to the best of their abilities, replicate the content produced by the person they are interpreting for (Angermeyer, 2009:5). However, the
interpreter failed to remain detached, which suggests that his competency to represent the defendant is questionable.
Lastly, the interpreter displayed tendencies to narrate and summarize the defendant's testimony, which is unacceptable. According to the National
Association of Judiciary Interpreters & Translators (2005), summarizing implies some form of omission of what is being said, which goes against the
rules of judiciary interpreting. Furthermore, in order to achieve legal equivalence, the interpreter must not edit, summarize, add, or delete the source
content (GonzГЎlez, VГЎsquez, & Mikkelson, 1991:16). An interpreter's duty is to ensure that the interpretation is accurate and complete. However,
the interpreter failed to comply with these

`` Project Classroom Makeover `` By Cathy Davidson Essay
As society advances and the boundary between people becomes seemingly less apparent, many individuals attempt to promote various plans based on
the concept of equality. Anyhow, many so–called egalitarian plans would inevitably result in failure because their proponents blindly believe in the
efficiency of equality. They neglect how people are motivated to improve and to test their limits by their instinct to compete. In her writing "Project
Classroom Makeover", Cathy Davidson proposes egalitarian plans consist of a "democratization of knowledge" (54) which depends on
crowdsourcing and "working together collectively" (51). In Davidson's perspective, problems will be solved by allowing everyone the equal
opportunity to express themselves. However, Karen Ho's research directly shows the impracticality of her plans by explicitly revealing the existence
of hierarchy in her writing, "Biographies of Hegemony". As shown by Ho's research, no matter how alluring Davidson's plans seem, they will not
come about. Because Davidson's idealistic plans disregard human beings' instinct to strive and fight for what they valued. Such egalitarian plans will
not be executed with hierarchy deeply rooted in our society, results precisely from human's desire to compete with each other. Although one often
blames the existence of hierarchy on factors such as discrimination and outside pressure, the essential cause of hierarchy is actually human's
competitive nature. Instead of wanting to share fair

Power And Fear In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding

  • 1. Power And Fear In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding In the book, "Lord of the Flies" By William Golding, power and fear are displayed because there have been fighting over power and control and leadership. The two people who are constantly bickering about who gets to be chief, are Jack and Ralph. Their dispute is because of the conch. With the conch being a major distraction because it makes the boys on the island go crazy and wild, it is also a powerful tool. Since it's a powerful tool, it makes you be a witness to both sides of Ralph and Jack's perspective and ideas on being the leader on their deserted island without any adults in their presence. When Ralph meets with Piggy, he also finds the conch and decides to blow it and he noticed that all the other boys on the island came running towards Piggy and Ralph. "We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They'll come when they hear us"(15). At that moment was when Ralph and Piggy realized that they can form a small society. They also recognized that they could use the conch of setting everyone to listen to him. Later in the book, the conch was to be used as a talking piece and Ralph was elected to be the chief of the boys. "Who wants Jack for chief?"(21). Nobody raised their hands for Jack except for the choir who later turned into Jack's warriors/ hunters. Then Ralph asked the question again and said "Who wants me?"(21). Everybody including the choir raised their hands for Ralph but Piggy was the only one who didn't raise his hand because he hesitated but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Reflection Of Writing In The Sales Of Richard Rodriguez ' Activity 1A As the story so often goes, I was once required to write, and thus I have been writing (largely under mandate) ever since. Although a Grandmother, who I in my childhood stayed with weekly, spoke chiefly in Spanish, I never learned enough of the language to ever properly forget it. This is a decision I've come to deeply regret in light of the book sales of Richard Rodriguez. My writing in adolescence was characterized by its being profoundly uninteresting. The highlight was a highly directed poem concerning the creation of chocolate bars, only a poem in the sense that jury duty is a form legal activism. To be resentful of the nature this sort of writing exercise however would be narcissistic to the point of supposing a person who's sentience spans only two presidential terms would has had anything unique to say about chocolate bars, allowed the proper poetic license. I came to much prefer reading over writing, as somebody had something to gain in that exchange. As it turns out, writing assignments persisted unabated by the logic of this argument. Eventually becoming dissatisfied with the quantity of anachronisms in English, I would later go on to study the Japanese language over 4 semesters. The highlight of this section of writing was a 12 sentence narrative about a thief boy, written by an American college student at the level of a Japanese elementary school student. • 3. What Is Apathy And Empathy Sympathy vs. Empathy Empathy is a Key word in person–centered counseling. However, many people, even very experienced mental health professionals can't explain the difference between the two. They believe they are being empathetic, when in reality, they are being sympathetic. So, what is the difference? Let's review all four possible feelings Apathy – total lack of caring. Sort of like when an ant is crawling toward your lunch plate and you smash it dead. This is apathy. You had no regard for the life of the ant. Pity– to feel sorry for someone without being inclined to help in any way. Like when you see the mal nourished child from a 3rd world country and think, I am so blessed to be born in this country. In the world of mental... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... No worries, all the dinosaurs were dead and gone. I learned how to counsel people. My professor, Dr. Justin Levitev from Loyola University in New Orleans, was teaching counseling techniques. So, as is typical of such a class, we students were role – playing counseling sessions. Whenever the counselor asked the client a "why" question, as well as other mistakes, Dr. Justin would ring a bell. I quickly learned not to ask why questions. At that point, I also learned to not to ask "why" questions in my day–to–day life. Whenever I hear someone asking a "why" question, it is like someone racking their finger nails down a blackboard (you know those old things teachers wrote on with dusty chalk until the late 1980's) – it sends chills down my spine. Back to Why not ask why. Whenever we ask someone a why question, we are asking him or her to justify, defend or explain him or herself. I hate it when people ask me, "Why do you live in Malaysia." I feel like answering, "Why do you care?" But sometimes you really want or need to know why about something. OK, fine, just change your language. Instead of asking "Why do you live in Malaysia?" Ask "What do you like about Malaysia." Why are you moving to a new house Why did you choose that University? Why don't you like him ? Why did you quit your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. A Broadway Dream Book Analysis Picture it. Broadway during the 1920s. Florenz Ziegfeld produces a revue called Ziegfeld's Follies. Girls appear in elaborate costumes bordering on the risque. Gangsters are running rampant from Al Capone to Bugs Moran to Machine Gun Kelly. This is the world in which Agnes "Bobbie" Storey finds herself. Agnes' family lived in Leaholme until the war nearly closed their inn, forcing them to find work in London. Shortly afterward, her father dies of Spanish Influenza, and Agnes is forced to find a job to help support her family. She manages to land a job at a restaurant belonging to a friend of her father. It is here that she wins The Most Beautiful Barmaid in London contest. This sparks Andre Charlot to offer her a spot in his revue that is traveling to Broadway. She immediately accepts, thus beginning her love affair with fame, success, and New York City. A Broadway Dream by Jane Hill is a fiction based on the historical person by the name of Bobbie Storey. Amazon has this correctly classified as historical fiction or biographical fiction; however, it was incorrectly classified as romance on OBC. It's unfortunate that I cannot share this ending, but I ... • 6. Imagery And Their Mind Through Descriptions And Sensory... Imagery is the use of language to create "mental pictures" in one's mind through descriptions and "sensory perceptions" (Wheeler). In"Digging," Heaney establishes the setting of the poem by describing that he is in what seems to be a room with a window that overlooks an area of green. He starts the poem off with "Between my finger and my thumb / The squat pen rests; snug as a gun. / Under my window, a clean rasping sound / When the spade sinks into gravelly ground: / My father, digging. I look down" ("Digging"). He uses the appeals to sound, as in "a clean rasping sound" and "the spade sinks into gravelly ground," as well as appeals to sight, "I look down," and appeals to touch, "[b]etween my finger and my thumb," to create an image in the reader's mind of what that day, or perhaps thought, looked like. The image that is created is one that shows contrast, in this case between an unidentified narrator and his father. As the poem continues, Heaney describes "But I've no spade to follow men like them. / Between my finger and my thumb / The squat pen rests. / I'll dig with it." The contrast that this furthers is the idea that the narrator is very different from his father, creating a divide that can be the start of tension. Because the narrator and his father cannot necessarily understand each other due to these differences, as each chooses his different approach to digging, the narrator seems to understand that not much can be done about the father's choice to remain a ... • 7. Fire and Ice by Robert Frost Critical Question: Is there a theme to the poem "Fire and Ice" that many can still relate to today? The popular poem "Fire and Ice", was written in in 1920. This poem was very controversial when it was first published. This poem seems to deal with the question "How will the world end?" Many scientists have different opinions on not only when the world will end, but more specifically how it will end. This poem implies that when dealing with the end of the world, it will end in one of two ways; in fire or in ice. Nearly 100 years later, this topic is still discussed today. When reading this poem written by Robert Frost, many only take into consideration the literal meaning of his words, and do not take the time to analyze the meaning behind them. Just as the topic of the world ending is still discussed today, the meaning behind the words of this poem create an interesting conversation in today's society as well. What was truly meant by Frost's poem "Fire and Ice?" Was it written with only science in mind? Or, is there further meaning behind the text that many can relate to today? This poem is a prime example of Frost's talent as a writer. Although it is only nine lines long, Frost is able to portray great meaning in those short nine lines. Frost expresses the idea of different personalities and shows symbolism for relationships in this poem. Frost's poem means so much more than deciding how the world will end. • 8. Society and Technology in "The Anthem" Essay Now–a–days, when we think of the future, we picture flying cars, and being able to transport. In the novel "The Anthem" society and technology as we know it had been driven to an entirely new direction. The characters in the society do not have the right to speak freely nor do anything that they wish. They lost all of their freedom, they couldn't even think for themselves. The society had to think as a whole, the word "I" did not exist in their vocabulary. The society is very balanced, and everyone fears thethought of even questioning it. Up until one man known as Equality 7–25271 wants the answers to all of his questions. The novel is expressed as Equality 7–2521's diary. One of the many benefits of having the novel written in a diary format, is that you get to really understand what the character feels about his surroundings. Most of the other people in the society don't notice their setting nor do they have knowledge of anything else. Equality 7–2521 describes his surroundings as being small and dark, all the buildings which are plain mark the housing of several different people. All the citizens of this society are over–worked and tired yet they have no intention of complaining because they fear the punishment. This novel would not be the same if it was written in any other form other then a diary, as well as if the novel was written in first person. It would not have to same effect on the readers. There are so many diaries, but all are written in the first person, so "The Anthem" is unique. • 9. Reflection Paper On Oppression When I think of oppression, I think of racism, sexism, and classism. These three things come to mind when I hear the word oppression because I think that they are the three most common ways of oppression. Racism is one of the most common forms of oppression. I see it every day and don't even recognize it or do anything about it. Sexism, oppression against genders, is the same way. I talk about genders all the time and don't even realize I'm doing it. Classism talks about where the wealthy and poverty line are in society. I normally choose to stay away from talking about Classism because my family isn't rich but we aren't poor either. In this paper, I will be talking about how oppression affects the daily lives of people. For this part, I interviewed one of my roommates and a good friend of mine to get their inputs on oppression. I also will be talking about the journal that I was kept track of for this assignment. Lastly, I will include a self–reflection on how I feel about oppression. For the first part being the interview, I decided to ask five questions. The only thing I told the people I was interviewing was this is a paper on oppression. The first person, person "a" in the interviews, I decided to interview was a good friend of mine who happens to have a minor in HURL, who is a girl. The second person, person "b" in the interviews, I decided to interview was my roommate, who is also a girl. Going into these interviews, I felt nervous asking these types of questions with these people because I have never sat down and had an actually conversation about oppression with anyone before. Before I started asking questions, I told the people that we were going to be talking about oppression and if they didn't feel comfortable about answering a question that they didn't have too. I also told them that if they needed more information, that I would give it to them. To start the interview I asked the question, "How would you describe oppression in your own words?" Person A answered with "Oppression is where individuals of the minority get frowned upon because of their differences." Person B answered with "Oppression is the constant pressure put on a group of people caused by an imbalance of power. Oppression occurs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Essay on Shakespeare’s Sonnet 73 Interpretation of Shakespeare's Sonnet 73 Sonnet 73 is a meditation on mortality, and yet it can be interpreted in a number of ways. The first such interpretation is that the author of the poem is speaking to someone else about his own death that will inevitably come in the future. This interpretation has the poem focused on the author, and his focus and concern over himself. This makes him seem very selfish, because we are all going to die sooner or later, and it does not do any good to dwell on or complain about it. The Sonnet also twists in its view at the couplet, it goes from being about the speaker's life to the addressee's life. This interpretation is from a note in the June 1948 Explicator. In the article R.M. Lumiansky argues that the "young person to whom the poem is addressed must inevitably grow old and experience those things which the poet says, in the three quatrains, he is experiencing in his old age." So the focus is on the death of youth, and in the Sonnet, using the metaphor of the changing of seasons very adeptly, attributes this characteristic to the speaker, but more poignantly to the person being addressed being as how they are not yet in the fall of their life. In an article by John S. Prince, he says that the key to understanding the Sonnet lies in the interpretation of "that" in the final line of the Sonnet. "The problem with the common interpretation of the Sonnet, which insists on the consistency of the speaker's mortality as the topic, is the grammar of this final clause contradicts it. Why, if the speaker

"Once upon a Time" by Nadine Gordimer pushed me to analyze what exactly happened in the story. When I first started to read the story, I did not think much about the plot. I thought the story was about a family who was paranoid for no reason and the theme would be something insignificant. After I read that the child was killed, I was taken back. It's as if I was walking up a staircase and suddenly one step broke causing me to tumble down. So after spending time rereading her story, I thought the theme was very clever. The elements of irony, symbolism, repetition, and even climax tie together perfectly with each other to form the theme of human beings creating their own self destruction. The best part is that the theme is also very applicable to real life. In the story the parents were too focused on keeping their child safe that they lost track of what was important and caused their own self destruction after their child was killed by the very same things they wanted. Even though we all want to make a mark on the world, sometimes we fall into the trap of the routine of a typical day and basically "take a day off." While reading this amazing novel you will realize you need to make the most of everyday and sprinkle positivity on the world. The Fault in Our Stars is a must–read novel that teaches a valuable life lesson that holds true to all of humanity: a person's legacy is created by others' memories. In The Fault in Our Stars, the author uses conflict to teach that a person's legacy is created by others' memories. For example, the author reveals to us that a person's legacy is created by others' memories when Hazel says, ""I don't care if the New York Times writes an obituary for me. I justwant you to write one," I told him. "You say you're not special because the world doesn't know about you, but that's an insult to me. I know about you."" This means that even though Augustus Waters wasn't known like Superman or Batman, he was known by Hazel, and this was enough for her to know him for the small infinity that they held. Consequently, this shows that your interaction with others' and the memories you share is your personal legacy. Additionally, Hazel states, "I was so frustrated with him. "But this is all you get. • 15. Thou Famished Grave Analysis Edna St. Vincent Millay's "Thou famished grave" and "Mindful of you" both include the themes of death, however, "Thou famished grave" uses the personification of a grave as a starving beast, diction to add imagery of starvation, and an image of a strong will to live to show the resentfulness and bitterness that the speaker has towards death, while, "Mindful of you" uses the imagery and personification of the four seasons to remember someone close who has died, to express that although death may take people physically, but they live and are remembered through memories. To begin, the speaker of the poem "Thou famished grave" presents a resentful and aggressive attitude towards death. The poem, addressed to a " famished grave" (1), personifies a grave as a starving beast that can "roar" (2), "gnaw" (3), and has "dismal jaws" (7). This represents death in a negative way because the description of the beast make it seem unpleasant and to be feared. Furthermore, the poem includes words and phrases when addressing the grave that follow the theme of starvation, such as, "famished grave" (1), "Gnaw thine own sides, fast on" (3), and "I cannot starve thee out: I am thy prey" which emphasizes that the beast of death is starving to take someone's life. This animal–like aggressiveness adds to the already negative image of the beast. This imagery also shows how the speakers thinks of death since it comes from her words which shows that she sees death in a very negative way. Due to this, the speaker is angry and does not want to give death what it wants, which is to take someone's life. Additionally, although death is something normally feared, the speaker shows that she is not fearful by saying "I have no fear / of thy dark project" (3–4) when speaking to the grave. She expresses that she does not want to die and her "heart is set / On living" (4–5), which explains her resentfulness towards death. She also understands that death is inevitable as she says, "I cannot starve thee out: I am thy prey / And thou shalt have me; but I dare defend / That I can stave thee off" (6–8). This shows that even though she knows that she will one day die, she still doesn't want to give death what it wants and will fight as long as she can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is yet another reason that Robin Hood had to betray his country. Fighting against the evil is always the right thing to do whether you have pledged allegiance to them or not. Robin Hood was not a thief. He was simply taking what was stolen from the common people and giving it back to them. The leader of the country was the true thief. He charged outrageous taxes that the people could barely pay, and oppressed them when they could not pay it. ("Robin Hood: The Folk Hero" 2). This is what makes him a thief. This is important because had it been from the perspective of someone else the reader would not have been able to experience the effect it had on Atticus from a first hard perspective of his daughter. An example of loyalty can be directly taken from William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet". However, Shakespeare's play showed that loyalty can be taken to extremes and result in conflict and tragedy. The biggest case of this "extreme loyalty" was brought out in Romeo's suicide after thinking that Juliet was dead. As Juliet was so loyal to Romeo, she faked her own death to get out of marrying Paris. Even though she was somewhat forced into that position, it was still an irrational act. Romeo makes it worse by committing suicide on seeing what he thought was Juliet's dead body. His loyalty was so extreme that he wanted to join her in death. Both languages are a part of Anzaldua, and applying them acknowledges her refusal to conform into one simple stereotype or idea. The poem is written from the second person perspective, placing the reader into Anzaldua's viewpoint. Anzaldua could easily employ first person perspective, using the pronouns "I" or "me" to describe her experiences, yet she did not. Instead, she uses the pronoun "you." This is a bold choice that forces readers to see Anzaldua 's experience from her viewpoint. Second person perspective is evident before the poem is even read. However, it is appropriate to use multiple references in a paragraph. When this is done, place the reference after each new reference so that the reader knows from where the information came. It is critically important to look up the format for referencing in text as well as at the end of the paper. Several variations exist depending on the type of reference, the number of authors including the use of et al., and whether or not you are quoting from a paper document or an Internet source. In addition, the way in which quotes are used varies depending on how the quote is framed in the sentence and depending on length (especially if more than 40 words). For each reference, look up the style in the manual until this information is memorized, which will not take long after writing several papers in this program. For the reference page, notice every comma, every use of capitalization, italicizing, and other formatting issues. This is where new students make the most amount of errors, especially with the issue versus the number on journal articles. Finally, it is crucial that you check the references in text and compare them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. The Biological View Of Eric Olson's Biological Theory Of... The biological view is a view that Eric Olson does stand for. Looking back at the standard view, Olson claims that the view may claim that persons did not come into the world first as an embryo, but instead as a full developed fetus . Once again, this view contradicts Olson's views. He believes that people were once an embryo. This brings about his biological viewpoints. Olson claims that people were statistically identical with the fetuses and embryos in their past. Of course, this view would bring about the question as to whether personhood is worried. If one was once an embryo or a fetus, then what type of mental properties did they hold? Lynn Baker contrasts this view in her reply to Olson. Eric Olson also did some experimental activities to better state his biological views. The first view he used was about upper brain obliteration. This experiment was thought out with regards to exponents of the Standard View. In summarization, if the cerebrum of a brain was destroyed, but the brain stem and autonomic nervous system was still in tack, one would still be alive. He then asked if, in this states, would one still be a person, even if one was not fully "there". This experiment contradicts the Standard View because one could survive this as an organism but not as a person. To me, this explains that the Standard View defines personhood as one who can have mental thoughts, which then would claim a person to be an organism. The other "experiment", or biological view, that Olson looked into was in regards to a fetus human vegetable. Human vegetables are people who do not have a functioning cerebrum. Specifically, a 5–month old fetus with a dead cerebrum, according to the standard view was not a person. A fetus, is a potential person, while a human vegetable is not a possible person. As one can see, Baker spent a lot of time depicting Olson's views. She specifically explained by she rejects this, and the fact being that other philosophers would also rejects his biological view. As conferred above, of the main factors that one could take away from Olson's view is that humans are organisms that become persons. Baker looks at this specific view of being only an organism as something that is not of importance. She ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Analysis Of The Morning Song By Sylvia Plath The morning song 'Morning song' by Sylvia Plath describes the birth, early stages of childhood and the sentimental value of a child in a very unique way. This poem was wrote from Sylvia Plath's own experience of child birth, it can also be related to by parents, it could be thought it is aimed mainly at females as this poem is quite feminine. This eighteen line lyrics is structured in 3 line stanzas which are called tersest. It is a tender poem and the overall tone of it is quite mellow. The opening line of the poem 'love set you going like a fat gold watch,' this literally means the physical act of making love, and that the act had created the child. The adjective 'gold' could signify that her child is precious and very high in value,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She also talks about this when she says, 'a mirror to reflect its own,' that is to do with reflection and talking about the future as you are your own person. The 'cloud' could be the child fleeting away, just like clouds slowly float away. 'All night your moth breath,' baby's breath really softly, it's almost unnoticeable. She isn't comparing the child to a moth looks wise, but more of its characteristics like its tiny movements and the fragility of them. The 'flat pink roses' is the bed sheet the child is laying on and 'flickers' is it's small moth like movements. The sound of her new born breathing is being compared to a 'far sea' moving in her ears, the comparison with nature expresses the beauty of her son. As soon as she hears the child cry she has to get out from bed, she uses the verb 'stumble' which could mean that she's really drained out and tired from giving birth as this may be the first morning after she had her child. She has to get up with her 'cow–heavy' breasts which is referring to carrying breast milk. Floral images are mentioned again, she's wearing a floral Victorian gown; this makes the imagery ... Those who are seen as great and loving are turn in to violent and unpredictable individuals. Those who were affected include the highest level of nobility, down as far as to the simple servant. While denial is shown by them there is no doubt that they have changed, and only in disastrous ways. • 28. Hamlet Compared with Lady Lazarus Essay examples Compare the ways in which Shakespeare and Plath explore the theme of mortality in Hamlet and Lady Lazarus. In both Lady Lazarus and Hamlet the semantic field of mortality and death can be clearly seen. Hamlet's second soliloquy, 'To be or not to be' can be found in act three, when Polonius and Claudius are hiding behind a wall listening to how Hamlet responds to Ophelia. Although there is a huge time difference between when they were written it is surprisingly similar in its semantic field of vocabulary to Lady Lazarus written in the 1950s by Sylvia Plath. There is also a huge difference in the type of genre that the texts are and the intended audience for them. Hamlet was intended to be performed and so has many more emotions expressed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, Hamlet does not see this as a negative thing as that is what he wants, as he expresses an emotion that is similar to his first soliloquy. The poem Lady Lazarus is similar to this as the persona views death as the final place and where she will eventually die as she says: "Flesh, bone, there is nothing there–". This shows that she views it as final and the fact that there is nothing beyond. However, there are also some differences between Hamlet and Lady Lazarus. In the poem, the persona keeps referring to her body as individual parts and so has connotations of the fact that the persona is not one person, but many objects because the persona expresses it this way; "The nose, the eye pits, the full set of teeth? The sour breathe Will vanish in a day." This shows that she is also dehumanising herself and using a metaphor to make her appear as an object rather than as a person. She also knows that she can transform into something different and achieve her mission of suicide if she wishes as she uses the simile "And like the cat I have nine times to die." This shows that she can die more than once, whereas in Hamlet, Hamlet wants to die and never come back as he says that he could kill himself with a dagger, through the saying "When he himself might his quietus make With a bare bodkin?..." He continues to say something and it seems as if for a minute he has forgotten about the ghost as he thinks that death is the end as he says "The undiscover'd country

  • 30. Position As A Writer By John Edgar Wideman Position As a Writer John Edgar Wideman begins his piece, Our Time, with a description of the world he grew up in. He takes the reader through the story of his brother, Robby, using a variety of voices and points of view. In this narration of his brother's life he brings to light his own dilemma withwriting the piece. He uses a variety of voices and points of view to demonstrate the different perspectives of Robby 's story. To contest the ethical dilemma of telling someone else's story without exploiting it, Wideman addresses the issue head on. By reading Our Time, a writer could learn much from Wideman, and adopt a number of his methods for different writing styles. One of Wideman's main writing methods is his use of multiple voices and points of view. This becomes apparent even in the first page of the text. Wideman introduces his essay with a letter. It is not addressed to anyone, neither is it signed, but, it is written as if every character in his story was speaking. The tone is his own, the subject is his brother, Robby, and parts of the letter reveal advise from Garth and his mother. This presentation of a multi–narrative style is present throughout the essay. It gives the reader a sense of authenticity that cannot be achieved through third person narration because it places the audience in the mindset of the person speaking. It is scientific fiction because Lois Lowry made a setting where everything is unusual than the things we do now. There are birthmothers, rarely Receivers of Memory ( which Jonas turns out to be ), and other special jobs in the community center. Point of View: The point of view in the story is third person because if there was a first person, the narrator ( which is a person that is involved in the story ) should be saying personal pronouns which are not in the book. Protagonists: The Giver and Jonas are the main characters. They are the main characters because The Giver and Jonas were either previous chosen receiver or an already chosen receiver ( which is Jonas ). Jonas learns information of being a receiver, while the previous receiver ( The Giver ) teaches him how to be a good receiver ( while nobody in the community should know nothing or anything about they both do in the annex room ). Antagonists: The Giver and Gabriel ( the new child boy ) are the antagonists. The Giver is an antagonist because he's the one that gives Jonas his pain /memories because of what he saw in his mind. Gabriel is an antagonist that gives Jonas reacts to his actions like in the night when Jonas needs to be disturbed and pat his back. Setting: The setting in the story is idyllic. Celebration of life, love and your identity. The first is "Love after Love" by Derek Walcott. This poem is about self–discovery. Walcott suggests that we spend years assuming an identity, but eventually discover who we really are– and this is like two different people meeting and making friends and sharing a meal together. Walcott presents this in terms of thelove feast or Eucharist of the Christian church – "Eat...Give wine. Give bread." Whether this will take a mirror or whether a person will realise who they really are through their own head and deep inside their own souls. It also suggests that you shouldn't care about others opinions with the line " in your own mirror.." which makes you wonder "How do I see myself?" which I thought could be trying to question basic human ideas, why do people look at who they are in the first person, why is the person whose eyes they see through them?! What makes them that individual? The answers here are clear, a love for life, for one's self and what they feel within their soul. Both poems, I felt used techniques to suggest being unique. • 34. Asian American Identities Of Asian Americans Essay Despite the fact that Asian Americans have been in Hollywood for decades, there are very few positive representations of them in film. More often than not, they've been depicted as stereotypical caricatures, and more specifically, as foreigners who can't speak grammatically correct English. Moreover, the negative representations of Asian Americans in film has perpetuated certain misconceptions about their culture. Chan is Missing (1982) calls for more genuine representations of Asian American identities through its cast of complex characters and defiance of Asian stereotypes. The film also urges its viewers to critically think about their own notions of identity through the use of several recurring themes and filmmaking techniques. Asians aren't represented often in Hollywood films, but when they are, they're usually confined to stereotypes or one dimensional character traits. In Chan is Missing, however, though the characters may at first seem as black and white as the film itself, by the end, many of the characters are well developed and seem like real people. This is conveyed through the film's simplistic cinematography as well as the casts' naturalistic performances. The camera seems to have both an ominous third person and, at times, first person perspective. This almost documentary–like cinematography coupled with the actors' performances make the story seem much more genuine and interesting than many conventional films. A Summary Of The Language In Antony And Cleopatra This passage, taken from William Shakespeare's play Antony and Cleopatra, shows Octavius Caesar discussing with Lepidus about what they should do about Antony whom Caesar thinks at this moment in the play is currently frolicking with Cleopatra, the pharaoh of Egypt, instead of doing his duties. The passage also contains accounts from Caesar about the man Antony once was as well as his vivid opinion on Antony's current state. This essay will analyse the language, form and the tone of Caesar the passage as well as examining its significance in relation to the rest of the play. The entire passage is written in poetic form which emphasises not only the power and position within the Roman hierarchy Lepidus and Caesar are in but also that they very much act like Roman leaders. It creates an aura of pomposity around them and that they lack a certain humbleness that characters such as Enobarbus possess as, up to this point, he has spoken in prose. The poetic form also sets up that they are very much equals to Antony and Cleopatra due to them speaking in poetic form in the previous scene. This equality foreshadows the rivalry and antagonistic behaviour between Caesar and Antony due to them being similar and yet different. This pomposity is furthered when Caesar, while speaking in the third person, lays out the recent actions of Antony. The manner in which he describes these actions ('he fishes, drinks, and wastes/The lamps of night in revel') sounds as the lyrical and flowing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This experiment is to calculate many aspects of the water that surrounds Corpus Christi. Water is the key to life on Earth and thus why water is so important. According to the Lab Report water quality is the quality of water and if it is considered acceptable drinking water. Water quality consist of its chemical, physical and biological characteristics. These properties can be studied through pH testing, nitrogen testing, Phosphorous testing and many other useful ways. Water quality is important because it allows scientist to identify if the water is in a good condition to drink or sustain life overall and it dramatically effects how healthy it is. The objective of this lab was to experiment if the water quality around the Corpus Christi is a reliable source of water for organisms and to reach an understanding of the water quality of the water surrounding Corpus Christi. STUDY AREA The location of the water sampling was in three different areas known as the Ward Island, Oso Bride, and Packery Channel. For the Ward Island and the Packery Channel were both well cleaned and little to no trash in the property. As for the Oso bridge the location was surrounded with unwanted trash. Shown in figure 1 is a variety of trash that interrupts the growth of organisms in the location throughout Oso bridge. The Oso bridge had several small like rocks throughout the location, while the Ward Island consisted of sand, and the Packery Channel had a variation of mud and sand. The weather was fairly similar in all locations especially the Packery Channel and the Oso bridge because the experiments were conducted on the same day. The weather for all consisted with an average of 80 degrees. For all three experiments the wind was blowing somewhat fast at a speed of 15–17 miles per hour. • 42. `` Project Classroom Makeover `` By Cathy Davidson Essay As society advances and the boundary between people becomes seemingly less apparent, many individuals attempt to promote various plans based on the concept of equality. Anyhow, many so–called egalitarian plans would inevitably result in failure because their proponents blindly believe in the efficiency of equality. They neglect how people are motivated to improve and to test their limits by their instinct to compete. In her writing "Project Classroom Makeover", Cathy Davidson proposes egalitarian plans consist of a "democratization of knowledge" (54) which depends on crowdsourcing and "working together collectively" (51). In Davidson's perspective, problems will be solved by allowing everyone the equal opportunity to express themselves. However, Karen Ho's research directly shows the impracticality of her plans by explicitly revealing the existence of hierarchy in her writing, "Biographies of Hegemony". As shown by Ho's research, no matter how alluring Davidson's plans seem, they will not come about. Because Davidson's idealistic plans disregard human beings' instinct to strive and fight for what they valued. Such egalitarian plans will not be executed with hierarchy deeply rooted in our society, results precisely from human's desire to compete with each other. Although one often blames the existence of hierarchy on factors such as discrimination and outside pressure, the essential cause of hierarchy is actually human's competitive nature.
