Solitude is bliss – 9 frame analysis
1. Solitude is Bliss – 9 Frame Analysis
The video I have chose to do my nine-frame analysis for is ‘Solitude
is Bliss’ by Tame Impala.
The first interesting shot is a shot
of the main character in the video
being held back by some
policemen. They are not letting
him through, but his desperation
to get through tells us that there is
something on the other side that
he wants. In the previous shot we
can see that there is also a crowd
of people gathered around and
there is an ambulance on the set.
However, the next shot we see is a
wide shot which shows the man
finally breaking through, but none
of the people who were there before
are now there anymore. He is
walking on his own on a road where
we can see abandoned cars and fires
in the background. This implies that
isolations is what he was trying to
reach when he was pushing through
the crowds in the shots before.
The next shot shows lots
of confetti and we see a
close up of his face from
which we can see he is
happy and enjoying
himself while he is on his
own. But as this shot
progresses we see a
group of people walking
into the shot and invade
his alone time.
2. Here is a shot of him getting
pushed by someone who is
walking the other way. This shot
conveys that all the people who
are walking in the other
direction do not want what he
wants and he is different from
other people. This shot goes
along with the lyrics, “you will
never come close to how I feel’.
After the group of people walking
the other way pass by, he is back
on his own again and he is dancing
around conveying that he is happy
again. In this shot we also see
someone crawling the floor as if
they are hurt and he kicks them
over. This shows that he has a
sense of power because he is in a
place where he feels very
comfortable on his own.
After this shot he continues
to dance down the road and
spots someone in the
distance. The interesting
shot that I have picked out
here, is a Point of View shot
of him using his hand like a
gun. He shoots the person in
the distance. This again
displays his sense of power
and the way he feels that he
can do whatever he wants.
3. In this next shot we cannot
really see the expression on
his, but from the high angle
shot looking down on the
man laid down in a pile of
old newspapers. We assume
that he is tired as he has just
battled his way through
another oncoming crowd in
the previous couple of shots.
This is also displayed
through the fact that we can
see sweat marks on his shirt.
In this frame, we are looking up
at the man from a low angle
shot. There is anger in his face
and his fist is clenched showing
feelings of anger and
aggression. The fire in the
background of this shot also
reinforces his emotions in this
picture.
In this last frame, it is clear
that the man is very upset
and angry as he is being
held back again, linking
back to one of the shots
from the beginning of the
video. Also unlike other
parts of the video where
the man is happy, he
doesn’t look like he is
enjoying himself anymore.
