Film analysis
Director: Albert J Broccoli
Assistant director: Gerry Gavigan
Camera man: Roger Pearce
Starts with studio logos
Dolby Digital
United Artists
Metro Goldwyn Mayer
The film begins with the white cycle moving across the screen from the left, then
back again and can see bond moving with it he then shots the camera and it bleeds
the iconography behind it is that it symbolises blood the camera goes black and the
film starts, but the key signifier is the music that follows this scene it signifies to the
audience that this is a bond film. The establishing shot is an extreme wide tracking
shot and this shot type lets the audience get a feel for the surroundings and where
the scene will take place with a low flying plane rumble which is a diegetic ambient
sound.
The second shot is a tracking shot of a man this is an enigma code because the
audience don’t know who he is, he is running across the dam when the camera
zooms out into a wide shot of the hoover dam yet the setting is taking place in the old
part of Russia.
The heavy breathing comes in to add an atmospheric sound; the man is wearing a
black combat suit and it is set in broad daylight. Then Pierce Brosnan the main
protagonist clips his harness into the railing and jumps off the dam, the scene
beforehand allows the audience to get a sense of what will happen next and when he
jumps the audience will feel a short sense of tension and then a little feeling of
anxiety. The producers will have used this to make the audience feel on-edge and to
really get their attention. The only props that are shown are bonds gun and rope
these are both action codes because a gun can symbolise danger or even death,
because that’s what we associate a gun with.
As he starts falling the tension builds because the audience are unsure of what he is
going to do or what he is doing in the first place and this is another action code
because it indicates that something is going to happen. The music and shots go from
slow to fast to escalate the tension and the audience’s feelings for what’s going on,
and because he is falling it’s all silent and when he reaches the bottom the next few
scenes get slightly faster the connotations of these pacy shots are that it fills the
audiences heads with drama and the fast shots can also connote a quickening
heartbeat.
After this 007 meets up with a Russian solider in a toilet cubicle and he says his
inevitable cheesy catch lineand during this gives it to us from an over the shoulder
two shot of the men from the soldier’s perspective.
The following scene is of a close up of bonds face with a key light to fill in the
background and a fill light to shine over his eyes illuminating his face but only his
eyes the rest is all dark, the producers will have used this to show the intent in bonds
eyes.
Bond then meets with Sean Bean and we see for the first time that it is from bonds
POV;Sean is also wearing a combat suit which is black because black has
connotations of stealth and when sneaking into a base you need stealth this whole
scene uses a two shot of both characters.
Bond then walk’s into a room full of explosive materials the Russians then force their
way in and a siren is bleeping in the background this is another ambient sound that
fills in the background the other sounds include gun shots, breaking glass and
dialogue, the Russians are dressed smartly in uniform and are all well-armed, it then
moves to a wide shot to encompass all of the soldiers in one shot and to give the
audience a sense of trepidation as Bond is stuck with supposedly no escape.
The fight moves outside where a plane is taking off down the runway with Bond in
pursuit on a motorbike using a tracking shot the audience are able to keep up with
him, gunshotsgo off and as the plane dives of the mountain it moves to an extreme
wide shot to show the audience a full picture of the task that Bond is trying to achieve
by getting into the plane, Bond manages it and fly’s to safety an explosion goes off as
Bond escapes.
Title sequence ‘Goldeneye’ comes on screen and the music starts to play.
Actor’s names come on screen
Pierce brosnan
Judi Dench as M
Sean bean

Followed by the directors, producers, set designers etc.
Cinematic follows.
