In Africa, the Ebola virus contributed to a 90% fatality
rate when it first broke out. Common symptoms of
the disease are similar to those exhibited by viral
illnesses such as:
 Muscle pain
 Sore throat
 Fatigue
 Fever
 Headache

This makes the disease difficult to detect till it
progresses to include:
 Vomiting
 Diarrhea
 Nausea
 Impaired organ function
In severe cases, patients also suffer from
internal/external bleeding and rashes. All of this can
occur between 2 to 21 days depending on the severity
of the disease.

Containment Practices
In order to contain the disease, the following
practices should be observed in the hospital where
EVD patients are treated:
 All EVD patients need to be kept in a single room
which should have its own bathroom with a closed
door
 All individuals who enter the room should wear
gowns, glove, eye protection and facemasks to
prevent infections.

In case there are copious amounts of blood, feces or
other bodily fluids are involved, visitors should wear
additional personal protective equipment. This
includes shoe covers, leg covering and double gloves
all of which should be disposable.
After removing the protective equipment, all visitors
should wash their hands thoroughly.

Lab tests, phlebotomy and other testing procedures
should be limited for important diagnostics and
examinations only.

Protecting Personnel
According to OSHA, the following workers are most at
risk for contracting the Ebola virus:
 Health care workers taking care of EVD patients
 Emergency responders
 Mortuary workers
 Those involved in customs
 Individuals who protect borders
And other personnel who may come in contact with
bodily fluids of EVD patients.

The Cal/OSHA BBP or Bloodborne Pathogens standard
This standard is applicable to all of those personnel.
This also includes housekeeping staff who disinfect
areas that are occupied by patients. Some of the
common characteristics include:
 PPE such as gloves and other coverings to cover the
eyes, nose and mouth
 Universal precautions to protect against infected
blood
 Work practice controls to limit exposure
