2. What is Coronavirus and COVID-19

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses - they
cause infections ranging from the common cold to
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
Coronaviruses circulate between animals and
humans; sometimes new variants of the
coronavirus emerge - such as COVID-19
COVID-19 has the potential to spread widely as
lack of immunity means everyone in the
population is susceptible
3. What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
Symptoms start 5 -11 days
after exposure
Similar to seasonal flu
Majority have fever and dry
cough (rapid onset)
Symptoms last 5 - 6 days
Severe illness starts day 7
Shortness of breath
Lung inflammation
Pneumonia

4. How is COVID-19 transmitted?
Exposure to large respiratory droplets & vomit
Coughing/sneezing onto mucous membranes (mouth/eyes)
Need close contact for this to occur (within 1 metre)
Contact with respiratory secretions
Transferred by touching mucous membranes
Tissues/surfaces contaminated with respiratory secretions
It is NOT transmitted in air except if patient undergoing a
procedure that generates aerosols e.g. airway suction (this is
therefore not applicable for Sussex Grange)

5. Infection Prevention & Control
Strategies
1. Cough etiquette
Cover mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands)
2. Standard precautions
We have implemented additional hand washing, cleaning/cleaning kits and
precautionary use of PPE
3. Isolation precautions
We are promoting some measures of isolation amongst residents in the care home,
community care is covered by social isolation and we have asked our teams and the
office to take measures around social distancing.

Encourage people to clean their hands

9. Standard precautions: Gloves
For procedures involving DIRECT contact with blood
or body fluid
Risk assess procedure
if gloves are required put on immediately before
commencing procedure
Remove and wash hands immediately after the
procedure

Virus (and other pathogens) are transferred between people,
surfaces and your own mucous membranes on your gloved hands
10. Standard Precautions: Aprons
For procedures where there is a risk that the clothing may
become soiled
Risk assess procedure – we have now implemented the
use of Aprons for all close contact with residents/clients
Remove if contaminated or on leaving and decontaminate
hands

Gloves - for close contact, respiratory secretions, body fluids

This is the procedure we need to follow even if we have no confirmed or suspected cases. Masks MUST
NOT be touched unless putting on or taking off. They CAN NOT be rested down on the face and pulled up.
This puts you at greater RISK.

16. Cohorting
Key principles for caring for people with
COVID-19
Key Principles
ANYONE with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 should be notified to your manager
immediately
Staff will be assessed to work in COVID-19 designated areas and not care for other people
We may implement a system of ‘Clean Teams’ and ‘Clinical Teams’
Designated donning and doffing stations will be put in place (in the care home) and be made
urgently available as needed on dom care
Care plans will be updated immediately to alert carers to anyone how is infected.
You must discuss your concerns, worries and feelings with your manager. We will ensure you
have the support and guidance you need for delivery of care

17. Isolation precautions in residential care
For residents with known/suspected COVID-19
Infection is transmitted by respiratory droplets and contact with respiratory secretions therefore:
Resident to remain in their room (including for meals)
Must have en-suite facilities
Protective clothing for close contact (under 2 metres)
Protective clothing for direct contact with body fluid
Clean surfaces daily
Clean frequently touched surfaces more often
Use detergent followed by disinfectant

18. Disposal of waste & laundry for
COVID-19 (suspected or confirmed)
Waste - discard as clinical waste
These bags should be placed into another bag, tied securely and kept separate from other waste
within your own room. This should be put aside for at least 72 hours before being put in your
usual external household waste bin.
Laundry - as infected laundry
To minimise the possibility of dispersing virus through the air, do not shake dirty laundry.
Wash items as appropriate in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. All dirty laundry
can be washed in the same load.

19. Staff with COVID-19
If you develop symptoms of a flu-like illness then DO NOT come to
work:
Acute onset fever >37.8oC
New persistent cough
Inform your manager by phone
Self-isolate at home for 7 days from onset of symptoms
