Genre research (Indie)
Jake wharton
Genre
• Genre is the style or type of music. There
are many different types of genre varying
from heavy metal to classical.
• The sort of genre you listen too is the sort of
music you are into for example if you like
listening to DJ’s and electronic music, the
most popular genre would be house music.
Indie Genre
• The indie genre is music that is a defined
music style and targeted towards a more
specific group of people opposed to
mainstream which is targeted towards a
larger group of people.
• The word ‘indie’ is a shortened version of
‘individual’ which represents its purpose to
attract more quirky and different people.
Examples of indie magazine covers
These are some examples
of indie magazines. And as
you can see there are
different styles and fonts
on each magazine, even
though its targeting people
who enjoy indie
music/magazines but there
are also different types of
indie music for example
NME is indie rock.
Imagery
Each magazine has the main image in the centre. For
example in the magazine ‘THE FLY’ there is an image of
jessie ware with her name in big writing, suggesting she is
the main headline for this magazine. You can also see that
the artists on the front cover are all dressed fairly cool and
look stylish to attract the ‘Indie’ audience. it’s important that
the person who is on the front cover ‘looks the part’ to fit the
magazine and the indie genre. Which is shown here as the
person on the NME cover looks quite cool and is smoking a
cigarette which is quite stereotypical for someone who is in
an indie rock band.
colour palette
As there are different types of Indie magazines the colours
used vary. But they tend to stay the same for each individual
magazine. Indie magazines tend to stick with more subtle
colours and rarely use fluorescent colours like lime green.
Even though the magazine ‘fault’ has brighter colours being
used, they are still quite subtle colours for instance the pastel
blue stands out but it isn’t in your face. This gives the
magazine a cooler edge, also the choice of clothing is very
important and the colours need to match the rest of the front
cover. Black and white is used a lot in indie magazines as its
simple and the colours go well with eachother, it can also give
it a more authentic look.
What i need to include in my magazine after researching the
‘Indie genre’
I have found out that i am going to use subtle colours in my
magazine, nothing that looks too bright or tacky. I will need to think
of a name for my magazine that will resemble what magazine it is. I
will also have to think carefully on things like costume for who’s on
my front cover, for instance i wouldn’t have someone who’s dressed
in Stereotypical heavy metal clothes, they would be wearing more
‘hipster’ clothing like skinny jeans, shirts, leather jackets ect. I will
also have to think of how i will lay out my magazine as it needs to
look fresh and needs to stand out to my target audience. I will also
have to think of different headlines on my front cover; headlines that
fit the indie music industry, as i don’t want articles in my magazine
that aren’t linked to Indie music.
