2. ‘NME’ magazine has the sub-genre of pop/rock music and also includes aspects of indie/punk music. This inspired me to create an indie themed magazine. Their main
choice of colours are red and white. I like this colour scheme as it is sophisticated and attracts the appropriate audience (aged 16-24) similar to the audience that I hope
to attract. Personally, I think the red and white colour scheme reflects the aspects of pop towards the magazine therefore I am considering using more neutral/earthy
colours such as oranges and mustards. The magazine’s logo is bold and dynamic in a red font, printed in capital letters. This is an eye catching feature and I think the
simplicity makes the magazine aesthetically pleasing. Their magazines have historically featured iconic artists such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Their main
images commonly include group shots and I feel that this is suited to the indie/rock theme as commonly indie artists are groups. I plan to mirror this convention and use
a group shot as my main image.
3. Spin magazine focus on the genres of indie, rock and pop music. This reaches out to a wider audience. Despite the wider audience range, I have still decided to
take a main focus down the indie route as it can attract my specific target audience which would be ages 16-24 who are fans of indie music. Usually, Spin
magazine are very neutral towards targeting gender as the red and white colour scheme can be appreciated by both male and female. This colour scheme is
similar to the magazine ‘NME’. This has further pushed me to move away from the red and white house theme as I want my magazine to be unique and
different to other magazines with similar genres out there however I still want to include non-biased colours to attract both genders. Their main images tend to
be single artists, highlighted against a white background. This creates a spotlight effect. The images are also well lit usually and I am considering taking images
with a predominantly dark background to replicate the spotlight effect however I will not follow the convention of ‘Spin’s imagery in the sense that their images
are light against light whereas mine will be dark against light. This is because the contrast between light and dark implies an old-fashioned, vintage feel across
the magazine fulfilling the magazines purpose and genre.
4. Colour scheme ideas:
From my research into similar
sub-genre magazines I have
found that often indie/pop
magazines commonly follow a
red and white house theme.
For my magazine the colour
schemes I have considered
are:
- Mustard
- Light orange
- Light Brown
- Greens
(All of these combined with
greys/dark colours)
These colours are more earthy
based and attract both the
male and female target
audience.
My magazine
Main image:
For my main image, I would like to take
a variety of both group and individual
shots. I like the idea of a group shot as
this stereotypically advertises my genre
well as indie artists are mostly groups.
