1. Formal Proposal of my music magazine
NAME OF MAGAZINE AND TITLE:
I have decided to call my music magazine Note; the reason for this choice is that it represents a
musical note, and because my magazine is based on music it is important for the name to link in with
the theme and music and ‘note’ does this successfully. It also links in with the style of music because
there is a lot of songs that use guitars and other acoustic instruments that need to play using musical
notes.
I would like my masthead to look like Billboard because it is simple yet effective to look at, because
of the bright colours that fill in the holes in the word ‘board’. It is catchy and the reader will know
that they are looking at ‘Billboard’ magazine when they see it without having to even read it, this is
what I want my audience to do!
MUSIC GENRE:
The genre of music I have chosen to base my magazine on is ‘Indie-Pop’, this is because I am
interested in this music and my favourite artists are classed as this genre of music. All of my friends
are also interested in this music genre which makes it easy to link to a target audience and aim it at a
certain type of person. I also wanted to incorporate my favourite artists and bands into the
magazine because then I will enjoy creating the magazine if I enjoy the people inside it. I also like the
things surrounding the idea of ‘Indie’ such as the images, clothes and the entire look and feel of it.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
The target audience of my magazine is males and females aged between 16 and 19, this is because it
is quite a wide market and I believe that the genre of music suits these ages correctly. They have to
enjoy Indie-Pop music and love going to see their favourite bands and artists at concerts. I have
made a questionnaire asking this age range and they all agree that they want the same artists and
features inside the magazine. The artists that they like must be in the charts and up to date and
always updating the iPods or MP3 players in order to have the newest songs to listen to.
INITIAL IMAGE IDEAS:
I will use images relevant to the music genre of music such as instruments, bands, artists and record
labels. These images will be interesting and exciting to look at so the audience’s eye will be drawn to
them immediately when they are looking at magazines they are thinking about buying.
These are examples of the type of images I will take of the
artists/bands they are interesting to look at and are creative
because they have been taken using different types of shots and
angles, which gives the image an interesting look and feel without it
being boring to look at.
2. INITIAL IDEAS FOR MY FRONT COVER:
On my front cover I will have a wide range of bright, bold colours but they will be in theme with the
entire magazine so it will look professional but exciting. The images will be of new up and coming
bands and artists obviously relevant to the genre of music the magazine has been created for. The
mastheads and cover lines will be telling the reader what and who is going to be featured inside the
magazines. The main image will be of the person or band that is the main feature in the magazine,
the image will be anchored by writing explaining who the person or band is. The masthead will be
placed at the top of the page so that the audience will immediately know what magazine it was.
Below is an example of the look that I would like to go for:
