FILM POSTER
ANALYSIS
The tagline at the top of the poster is
a clear insight into the film which
therefore creates a context for the
narrative. Although the quote
doesn’t give away a lot about the
film, it keeps people guessing which
creates a sense of suspense. The
quote itself could be taken in two
ways. For one, it could suggest that
Esther is the victim of the film.
However, it could also insinuate that
she is the villain.
The odd colour balance of the
light and dark green
contrasting background is dull
and simple, a far cry from the
conventions of the thriller
genre. The ombre effect of the
background creates a white
spotlight around the girl. This
editing effect portrays the idea
that the girl is an angel, as
most little girls are seen. This
also helps to draw attention to
the main image.
The red ribbon around her
neck gives a hint to the genre
of the film. It also holds
connotations of blood and
possibly even a cut throat.
The font of the tagline is
very simple however
contrasts and therefore
stands out against the
background.
The title of the film is written in
a child like font which subtly
hints at the storyline and
narrative of children being the
main involvement within the
film.
The second tag line under the film
title gives us a subtle insight into the
film. The colour red connotes the
idea of blood and violence. This
could be indicating to the audience
that if the secret is not kept, the
consequences could be deadly.
The use of down lighting creates
the sense of darkness as the
girls face is consumed by
shadows. The main image of
the girl looking straight at the
camera creates an evil mode of
address whilst also conveying
an eerie mood.
Curiosity of the girl on the
poster is immensely
increased with the way her
hair is tied in pigtails with
black bows. This aspect of
mise-en-scene represents
her as a normal innocent
little girl however her blank
facial expression suggetss
otherwise.
A clear indicator that Will
Smith is the starring actor in
this film. This will help to
attract more viewers,
especially fans of the actor.
The name is printed in a
simple white font which
contrasts with the darker
brown background.
As the largest object/person in
the foreground of the poster,
the audiences attention is
immediately captured by the
actor. The fact that he is the
only person on the poster
gives a subtle hint to the
narrative of the film.
The size and colour of
the title of the film
evokes saliency and
makes it stand out.
The viewer’s attention
is immediately drawn
to it.
The tagline confirms that the character is
indeed alone in this make shift world
created for the film. Therefore it also
anchors what we see in the image. The
viewer is left with a sense of enigma and
many unanswered questions.
The smoke and decay seen
in the image indicates that
destruction is a theme of the
film. This feature of mise-
en-scene also creates an
eerie atmosphere.
The names of the director,
institution, and all the production
team are listed in order to give
credit,
The grungey colour
scheme of browns,
oranges, black and white
indicates a worn down
abandoned atmosphere.
Not only does this give a
subtle hint to the storyline
but it creates an unnerving
mood.
