3. What is Intelligence?
(random from the web)
• the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills
• cognitive problem-solving skills
• "catching on," "making sense" of things, or "figuring out"
what to do.
• ability to interact with the environment and overcome its
challenges
4. Multiple Intelligences
Howard Gardener: Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard
Graduate School of Education.
Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences (1983)
5. Verbal / Linguistic
• Description: Possess the ability to use language
effectively both orally and in writing; understanding
through the use of words; enjoy writing, wordplay, and
listening to stories, discussing issues.
• Teaching Method: Focuses on using language
communicatively
• Lesson Ideas: Read a book aloud or tell a story, debate a
current issue, incorporate journal writing
6. Visual / Spatial
visual learning style
Description
Recognizes, form,
space, color, line,
and shapes well
Learns from
graphically
represented
information
Absorbs images
best
Lesson Ideas:
Use colored
markers on board
to mark word
categories
Include charts/
graphs to
represent ideas
Use pictures/
flashcards.
Show a video
Teaching Method Teacher must provide clear visual information
7. Body / Kinesthetic
tactile learning style
• Description: Possess the ability to use the body to express
ideas and feelings and to solve problems. They experience
learning best through various kinds of movement.
•
Teaching Method: Combines physical actions/body
movements with linguistic responses to express ideas,
accomplish tasks, create moods
• Lesson Ideas: Go on field trips, do experiments, use cutting
and sticking and building, incorporate sport, use drama, have
students get up and walk around, make a fruit salad
8. Interpersonal
• Description: Possess the ability to understand others and to
respond. They like to interact and learn best in groups or with a
partner; they learn while speaking to others in an “authentic’
settings.
Teaching Method: With the person you are sitting next decide what should
be written here.
Focuses on group learning, collaboration and social interaction
Lesson Ideas: Think of one good idea and find someone else to share it with
the person you are sitting next, list at least 2 ideas
Have small group discussions, use role-play, use peer teaching,
have students carry out authentic tasks with others inside and
outside the class
9. Logical -Mathematical
• Description: Possess the ability to use numbers effectively
and reason well. They are good at problem solving.
•
Teaching Method: Focuses on using logic and mathematical
models to represent and help students work with concepts and
ideas.
• Lesson Ideas: Play logic games, teach and apply rules, have
students derive rules, provide critical thinking and problem
solving puzzles, incorporate numbers.
10. Description: Possess the ability to recognize rhythm,
pitch, and melody. They learn best through songs, patterns,
rhythms.
Indicate the way to my abode,
I'm fatigued and I wish to retire,
I partook of a beverage 60 minutes ago
And it’s proceeded to my cerebellum.
Teaching Method: Focuses on using sound music and
rhythms.
Wherever I may perambulate,
On land or sea or agitated waters,
You can always hear me humming this
“melodity”,
Lesson Ideas: Play background music, teach with chants,
sing/listen to songs.
Indicate the way to my abode.
Musical-Rhythmic
auditory learning style
Show me the way to go home,
I'm tired and I want to go to bed,
I had a little drink about an hour ago,
And it's gone right to my head.
Wherever I may I roam,
On land or sea or foam,
You can always hear me singing this
song,
Show me the way to go home.
11. Intrapersonal
• Description: Possess the ability to know about and
understand themselves. They are reflective and intuitive.
They learn through self-knowledge of motives, goals,
strengths, and weaknesses.
How would you rate your own
intelligences - “smarts”?
Strong / Average/ Weak
Verbal / Linguistic
Visual / Spatial
Body / Kinesthetic

Logical / Mathematical
Musical/ Rhythmic

methods?

Logical / Mathematical
Musical/ Rhythmic
Intrapersonal
• Teaching Method: Focuses on guiding students’ learning
through personal reflection
• Lesson Ideas: Allow independent reading, give choice in
projects, have students define and share their goals.
12. TASK – See Worksheet
“number /
reasoning
smart”
Into till the first intelligence should not take more than 10 minutes
Get participants list a few possibilities in pairs and present quickly
Quick look at some definitions
Gardener’s model has numerous intelligences. Interpret the background.
People have stronger and weaker intelligences
Tests on the net.
This is not an academic session to learn the theory but an attempt to see how this model may be useful in EFL – for students and teachers
Hand out handout
Verbal linguistic : Most common focus in teaching
Point out Description, Teaching Method, Lesson Ideas
Point out the simple names – Word Smart
Visual / Spatial
Visual organization and stimulation is critical. Point out the use of Table and colors.
Body Kinesthetic
Throw a bean bag: I say the color you say the object
Blue – sky, red – fire engine, golden brown – wheat, red yell green – traffic light
Interpersonal
Have students work in pairs
Teaching Method: Focuses on group learning, collaboration and social interaction
