Blackfish review
1. Title: Blackfish (2013) Review
(YOUTUBE LINK HERE)
Have you ever been to SeaWorld or a similar aquarium park? Have you ever seen one of
those shows where trainers swim and do fancy tricks with orcas? Those are fantastic I mean what
could possibly go wrong? They’re professionals aren’t they? Well let’s just say there’s a reason orcas
are commonly termed as ‘killer whales’.
Blackfish is a controversial documentary which reveals that keeping whales in captivity is not
only animal cruelty but also poses a great risk for the trainers. It circles around the story of an orca
at SeaWorld named Tilikum. This whale is responsible for the deaths of three individuals, but the
documentary mainly focuses on his last victim Dawn Brancheau, a senior trainer at SeaWorld who
was killed in a performance. It’s scary to think of such a tragedy of happening in front of so many
people of all ages.
Caution: If you ever encounter and incident with a killer whale, doing what is portrayed in the
image above will not be the best of ideas. Do not be fooled by their appearance. They are NOT
giant cuddly penguin-fish.
The documentary is really well constructed. What’s most beautiful about it is that they don’t
just bore you with interviews and discussions. Instead, there’s footage of the whales from past
performances, some of which went horribly wrong. I think it pretty much drew me in the moment it
started. The documentary, being controversial, is pretty biased. But every statement is supported
2. with logical proof such as video footage. This makes it really convincing so it does succeed in fulfilling
the aim of the movie, to ban killer whale performances in marine parks such as SeaWorld.
Even the title sequence is just so suspenseful and powerful you know from the beginning
that the film will be worth your time. The ending is even more amazing, it’s breathtaking; it builds up
a story, and the fact of that story being true makes it even more concerning. I was just left thinking
about everything I had watched. A Saturday well spent.
In conclusion, I loved it. If you like documentaries, it should definitely be on your list. I think
it was one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen. Blackfish is available on DVD, Blue-ray and
purchasable online.
