Evaluating music video
Research and planning
Outline the development of
the concept
• My influences were the pierces, Mad Men and the song
‘Pata Pata’ by Temi Dollface.
• I wanted to use the song ‘boring’ by the Pierces which is
about how the glamorous lifestyle is boring. It raises issues
such as- drugs, sex and consumerism.
• The key media concepts we looked at were audience which
were primarily females in the age range of 13-25.
Research we included
•

We looked at ‘mad men’ 50’s advertising.

•

We researched if our singers would be independent or they
would be signed to a record label- we thought they would be
signed to a major label with a mainly mass market.
Explain what you did, why you
did it and the impact of doing it.
• I researched into our music video this helped us
decide the image of our singers/performers.
• Here are some music videos that influenced the
music video image and setting.

We needed to research into
conventions and real media texts.
•

It has to have a rhythm the cuts in editing to the song.

•

In the music video the performers/singers had to lip-sync to the song to
look realistic that they were singing and it was obviously their song.

•

We also used the element of repetition to convey the singers image of
‘glamour’ and to link the song.
• In summary I learnt about the research of music videos takes a lot of
time and preparation. This is especially to convey your image and idea
and the stars image.
• We looked at the glamorous star image of: the Pierces, Britney Spears,
Pretty Reckless.
• For the music video a lot of consideration was put into
Location, props and costume. This is because we want to
give the singers a star image and to also make the music
video look good.
Research into the set design
• In the music video there our three main scenes: Sofa, Bedroom & Red
Curtain. Here are some pictures of our set design and the music video.
Planning
• The production key parts
• Planning is different from research as it is about
organizing my music video.
Storyboarding/animatic
•

I find using storyboards is much easier to communicate your visual and dramatic ideas for a
music video.

•

Storyboards add any additional details and creating a detailed version with action, camera
and lighting directions.

•

I think the storyboard is an important piece of communication between the members of the
film crew as it provides a common outline which everyone.
Aspects of planning that were
important to the shoot
• The shooting schedule was very important as it
helped us to organize our time and when to fit in
each of the shots.
• The casting was very important as the girls had to be
able to convey the star image and be able to lip sync.
Evaluation
• Researching for the music video was very important in
informing how I wanted to produce it.
• I find that the planning went very well to plan as we got to
include extra scenes in our music video.
• An area of development would be more shooting angles in
the lip syncing scenes.
