In police interrogations, interrogators use many different techniques to get the suspect to confess to their crime. In the book The
Rag and Bone Shop by Robert Cormier, there is a detective named Trent and he is one of the greatest interrogators and he never
fails. Trent was trying to use different techniques to get Jason to confess to the crime, but he didn't really want to solve the crime,
all Trent wanted was for Jason to confess. He wanted to show everyone how great he was and that anyone would confess to him.

Tiger Rag Analysis
Jazz originated in New Orleans and it fuses African rhythm with western harmony. Jazz had many multiple meanings depending
where you were from. In New Orleans Jazz meant "speeding up" or "intensifying" it also could mean a variety of sexual
associations. When listening to "Tiger Rag" and "Dippermouth Blues" I immediately thought that "Tiger Rag" was more Jazzy.
The beat and tempo in "Tiger Rag" is fast and the energy level remains the same through out the song. "Dippermouth Blues" on
the other hand is more smooth and helps you get more into the music.

Genre categorization is important because it helps to organize and classify movies. People make a lot of decisions based on the
genre of the film; this is one of the main ways in which audiences select what movie to see. Most genres follow the same theme,
story formula, setting, and story formula. If every genre followed the same set of rules one would think that after awhile these
movies would become predictable and therefore lose its spark. There is also the notion that people and society change and evolve,

of a certain genre and one way to do this is genre breaking. Genre breaking can be defined as a film that is classified as a certain

formula. By doing this, the film still follows the essential idea of the genre's traditional theme, but the way it goes about doing it is

Ragged Dick, a "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" children's book about an honest and great kid named, shockingly, Ragged
Dick is a story revolving around the rags to riches journey of the protagonist. While being a children's book Alger still creates
one–dimensional characters to in a skillful way to help guide his young readers into seeing all the qualities he believes are good in
Dick. Specifically, Alger utilizes Johnny Nolan, Frank, and Henry Fosdick to suggest the traits that are harmful and necessary for
Dick's path to "successful" adulthood, but fails to accurately depict the reality of the world.
Alger introduces Frank and Johnny Nolan into the story to imply the attributes he believes would impede Dick's path to success.
Alger intends Frank's lack of street smarts to show the reader the susceptibility to the vulnerability that arises. In the interactions
with the con man who asks to trade twenty dollars for the wallet and promises "(They'll) get (their money) back, and a good deal
more," highlights Franks naïveté and lack of street smarts by juxtaposing his actions with that of Dick who outsmarts the con man
(44). Being too sheltered, Frank is not as street smart as Dick who has learnt through living on the streets. While Frank is rich, his

say, and this helped me understand why Jason confessed in the book. This article follows an experiment where college students
were made to break rules by their partners and later students that were guilty and innocent of academic misconduct were
interrogated and asked to sign forms of confession. After the experiment took place, 93 percent of the guilty students confessed,
but 43 percent of those who were innocent also confessed. Interrogations that involve false confessions are also significantly

set him above the rest. Micky fits the typical description of a common boot–black in the city during the time in which Ragged
Dick was written. He seems to exemplify expected behaviour of a young boot–black by his rough exterior, involvement in fights,
lack of money, and disregard for others including their property. Micky Maguire is the enemy of the story, and it is clear that the
"hero" must always rise above the bad characters in order to provide a lesson with the story being told. Dick is known to keep his
cool and remain confident around Micky, even when a fight is breaking out between the two of them (Alger 94). While Micky is

From birth we are conditioned to strive for success. We hear stories of people who turned themselves into Wall Street wonders or
self made millionaires. My story proves the road from riches to rags is just as, if not more so, character–changing than the one

JOPLIN: MAPLE LEAF RAG
Scott Joplin was acknowledged, as "king of ragtime" in (1868–1917) he was a composer and pianist whose father had been a
slave. Joplin was trained in classical music. Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag" was published in 1899 with a March Tempo.
You can hear strong, steady chords in left–hand keeps the march beat going throughout the piece, while the right–hand plays a
lively, syncopated melody against this steady beat. The sections are repeated in the usual pattern. The melody begins higher and
moves down. The section is repeated. The opening section is played. The key is change too; there is a change in the right hand
rhythmic; and left–hand leaps. Once again the section is repeated. Then it returns to the original key; strong final cadence and the
section are repeated as the music comes to end.
I feel like this piece, he wanted to wow his audience. The impressive tempo and difficulty of the piece were his way of showing
that ragtime was as legitimate as any other genre, regardless of its origins. Maple Leaf Rag is playful, fun, and yet oddly mature.
The use of the lower notes against the high notes creates a contrast that feels like an adult borrowing childhood for a few
moments. It makes me feel young again, and the fast–paced, quirky notes are a welcome break from the normal, more sober piano
recital. I like this. This is why I say to people, tunes of the old days really do show intuition and good old–fashioned wisdom on
how to play tunes.

phenomenon testifying to what can be termed "the ecstasy of speed." Novels tend to create societal themes and expressions of
progress that change and explode within texts. Uses of world and historical acceleration are overarchingly some of the most easily
arrived at examples of "the ectasy of speed." E.L. Doctorow's novel Ragtime, which has been adapted into a stage production as
well, stands as an example of precisely this sort of text. There is the question of the association of the cultural, historical, and
fictional characteristics of Ragtime that critic Brian Roberts has called the "central metaphor" of the novel. When put together
with the cohesive historical narrative within the novel, the discussion reveals the ways in which Doctorow uses Ragtime to
perform a work that mirrors the ups and downs of the classic ragtime style of music. Doctorow does this through the introduction
of a distinctive way of reading history which is vitally deconstructive and politically charged.

The impressive tempo and difficulty of the piece were his way of showing that ragtime was as legitimate as any other genre, regardless of its origins. Maple Leaf Rag is playful, fun, and yet oddly mature. The use of the lower notes against the high notes creates a contrast that feels like an adult borrowing childhood for a few moments.
