TASK SET-UP |
THE TASK CYCLE
1. GRAB STUDENTS' ATTENTION
● change your tone of voice
● use a bell, chime or whistle
● use a visual
● write a sentence on the board
● switch off the lights
● raise your hand
● give a command starting with "If you can hear me…"
● say "1-2-3 eyes on me" and have students answer "1-2 on
you"
● clap, snap or tap a rhythm for students to imitate
● cound down
● stand still
● etc.
2. HOLD UP THE MATERIAL
3. SET INSTRUCTIONS
● use short sentences;
● use imperatives;
● avoid request forms;
● break complex instructions down.
4. DEMONSTRATE THE TASK
● do it yourself;
● choose a good student to do it with you;
● ask a strong student to show what to do.
5. CHECK THE INSTRUCTIONS
● use ICQs;
● use display questions;
● use pair-checking;
● ask one student to explain what to
do;
● etc.
6. MONITOR THE STUDENTS
● circulate;
● monitor from behind;
● couch and squat;
● sit down if appropriate;
● encourage the students;
● etc.
