Athenian Architecture
During war with Persia, Athenians dealt with famine, plague, and the destruction of their city but that was not the
end of Athens. Instead, Athens bounced back and thrived entering into the Golden Age. The Athenians began
reconstruction after victory with Persia was secure. The new city rose from a plain and as each level went upwards,
its functions and architecture became more exalted. At the bottom there was the house of commoners, built from
stone and mud with little concern for architectural merit. The fine art and architecture went into public buildings,
one of these public institutions being the agora. When redesigned, the agora was made to be more elegant designed
for greater comfort and show. Beautiful public buildings and temples ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Any merchant found to be selling inferior merchandise was fined. The expansion that occurred with the gymnasia
and theater demonstrated the value the Athenians placed on public life and on physical prowess and discipline. The
gymnasium was made up of a running track, a wrestling court, fields for throwing javelins and discus and served as
a place to increase fitness or socialize. Theaters were carved out of the hillside and plays were regularly preformed
and served as entertainment. There were 3 different kinds of plays: comedies, tragedies, and satyr plays. Tragedies
had strong themes where the main character often went through a main plot such as defying the gods or battling for
power and these often ended tragically. Comedies were lighthearted and crafted of political jokes, comments, and
messing around. Satyr plays teased the idea of the tragic theme. In the play the actors would dress as satyrs a
mythical creatures. Making theater admission for poorer citizens cheaper, the fine arts were democratized.
Architects and urban designers Ictinus and Callicrates planned the new acropolis and build the Parthenon, the main
temple that dominates the hill of Acropolis, while the sculptor Phidias carved the friezes on the Parthenon and
created a 40–foot tall statue of

Ancient Greek Tragedies
"It still hosts plays and events," explained Theokles. "However, the southeast wall provides the best view of the
oldest Greek theater below the Acropolis, the Theater of Dionysius. In fact, the stone seating dating from 330 BCE
provided enough room for seventeen thousand people to enjoy plays such as the ancient Greek tragedies of
Euripides and Sophocles. Moreover, the very meaning of tragedy comes from Greek plays. In essence, the ancient
Greeks believed that the fate of mortals was at the mercy of forces beyond their control." Theokles then turned their
attention back to the Parthenon and walked all around it to the back porch. "Once a frieze adorned the upper part of
the Parthenon depicting epic battles with justice triumphing over injustice," Theokles informed them while he

Nonetheless, Raphael honors Socrates, Aristotle, and Plato along with other ancient Greek philosophers in his

Flipped Classroom Analysis
During my four years teaching at Agora Cyber Charter School, student achievement has been an upmost concerns.
Traditionally, our student population has not done well on standardized test and each year our scores have gone
down. Personally, I feel that our students lack a sense of overall performance character and need help developing
the characteristics of perseverance, integrity, and responsibility. Additionally, we work within a unique platform in a
virtual classroom that could lead to some progressive models of education. One model that I feel would be effective
in the cyber environment is the use of a flipped classroom pedagogy. Not only would a flipped classroom enable us
to more effectively differentiate instruction, it would increase ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is not an issue at Agora. The school possesses the technical advances to make the flipped classroom a success.
Flipping the classroom would improve our students' performance character and lead to more meaningful learning.
Additionally, it would encourage a "growth mindset" among students and faculty. With the appropriate boundaries
established the flipped classroom could help us reach all of our learners and meet help of us meet the goal of
student achievement. References

Envision a world where the people are ravenous and yearning for any remnant of food they could obtain, where the
society is overrun and no one has a free say. This is the type of society the ancient Spartans would have lived like
unlike the ancient Athenians. The Athenians lived a far more diverse life if compared to Sparta. Ancient Athens was
better to live in than ancient Sparta due to its efficient and honorable government and flourishing economy.
Primarily, ancient Athens's efficient government was better than the ancient Spartan government due to its adroit

This proves to show that not only the Athenians had a trade market, but they hard one that was always occupied and
in use. In comparison, the ancient Spartan economy was relied on farming and conquering other people. The
ancient Spartans stole everything they needed, instead of trading. Given this information, the ancient Athenian
economy was much more honest to their people, basing their economy off of trade. In addition, the Ancient
Athenians were very successful in making their own currency. According to Bower and Lobdell, "Like most city–
states, Athens developed its own coins to made trade easier. Coins were made of such metals as gold, silver, and
bronze (Bower, Lobdell 262). The ancient Athenian currency was far more effective than the ancient Spartan
currency because it was accessible to carry around. As clearly stated, Bower and Lobdell established that Sparta
had "used heavy iron bars as money" (Bower, Lobdell 266). The ancient Athenians had to carry around as many
light–weight coins as they wanted, whereas the Spartans had to carry weighty iron bars. Ultimately, due to its light
weight capacity, the ancient Athenians' currency was more successful than the ancient Spartans currency.
Furthermore, ancient Athens had an economy that was useful to every social class. When citizens came to the

Ancient Greek Cities Research Paper
Ancient Greek cities can generally be seen as walking cities. Cities have smaller population than the state, which
were occupied a smaller built up area. According to Doxiadis(1964), Athens can be one of typical walking cities in
ancient Greek. It was built on human dimension. The average dimension of Athens is approximately 2 kilometres, it
means people would not spend more than 30 minuets for walking across the whole city (Doxiadis, 1964). In other
words, the distance between the functional places or dwellings to the centre was ordinarily shorter than 800 meters,
which means it only takes 10 minuets on walking (Doxiadis, 1964). Moreover, the layout of Athens is generally
simple. Fundamentally, it was developed through the natural process,

Admissions Essay: My Journey To The Academy Of Medicine
Today was my last day of serving as a medical apprentice. I woke up and had picked fruit from my courtyard
garden to keep me energized for today's events. I strolled through the agora (marketplace) on my way to the
Academy of Plato when I came across three sickly children. As a healer, I had the greatest urge to examine and
most of all soothe the children of their pain. However, time did not allow it, so instead I purchased a few loafs of
bread, with the loose drachmas I had in my pocket. It is quite tragic that half the children in Athens die before they
reach ten years of age. The look of gratitude on their faces reminded me of the reason I aspire to become a doctor. It
is my passion to heal the wounded, cure the sick, and discover new treatments. The agora was bustling with people,

I swore the Hippocratic Oath. A ceremony was held for the other medical students and I, it took place in the
academy's courtyard. We formed a circle, the other students and I, and swore to the healing gods. We vowed we
will do no harm in the name of science and medicine, " I swear by Apollo the Physician, and by Asclepius and
Hygeia and Panacea and all the gods and goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will fulfill, according to my

The Athenian Agora, Kerimeikos And The Acropolis
There are a number of art and architectural features found in the Athenian Agora, Kerimeikos and the Acropolis.
The Agora or market place has a number of buildings such as the Tholos, The Eponymous Heroes and the
Strategion. The Kerimeikos or Ceramicus was the potters ' quarter of the city, from which the word "ceramic" is
derived, and was also the site of an important cemetery and numerous funerary sculptures erected around the area.
The Acropolis had many major buildings, the most prominent of them being the Parthenon and the Temple of
Athena Nike. An evaluation of primary and secondary literary sources gives insight into the main purposes of the
buildings and the art within such as pottery and sculptures found within the context of these sites. To an extent the
art and architecture in these sites reflect the significant cultural practices and beliefs of the ancient Athenians as it
gives insight into what they truly valued.
The Athenian Agora had a number of features in its differing buildings and along with their features they had a
largely unique purpose. The Monument of the Eponymous Heroes was described as by Susanne as a "Marble
podium that bore the bronze statues of the ten heroes representing the tribes of Athens" . As said by Suzanne the
appearance of the monument represented the 10 tribes of Athens after the reforms of Cleisthenes assigning the
citizens of Athens into 10 tribes. These statues were most probable bronze statues as bronze was

Cleophon The Agora
My film is a fictional tale based on historic events and using legitimate historical characters. Under the genre of
war/political drama, this film focuses greatly on the final period of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and the
Peloponnesian League. Many scenes in the film take place in Athens during a period of upheaval und unrest;
therefore, filming scenes in sets of the Agora, will capture the scale of Athens at the time. One example is the trial
of Cleophon, a scene that will be shot in a reconstruction of the Heliaia, the courthouse of Athens. An earlier scene
detailing the arrest of Cleophon takes place in his fictional office on the outskirts of the Agora.
The patriotic protagonist of the film is Cleophon, a democrat who wished ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It takes place in Cleophon's fictional office room, a simple square room with minimal furniture to emphasize the
focus on Cleophon and his diligence. The scene occurs at nighttime and indoors, and will be dimly lit by closed
lamps and candles. This minimal lighting will provide even more drama, as shadows will be cast along the walls.
The main furniture in the scene is Cleophon's oak desk, covered with parchment, emphasizing Cleophon's business
and desperation to stop the Peloponnesians. On the back wall of the office is a wall painting of Dike holding a scale
of justice, representing the ironic injustice of the scene. Cleophon is seated at his desk, wearing a simple chiton to
suggest his lack of concern for flamboyant, elite garments. The actor is in his early 30s, as the true age of Cleophon
is not known. This age emphasizes the perspective difference between Cleophon and the older oligarchs with their
superiority complex. The scene will begin with focus on a distressed Cleophon, busily working at his desk on plans
to unite the people against the Peloponnesians. This distress will be quickly interrupted by the sound of the
magistrates' police knocking on the door. Cleophon is then arrested and lead out of his office, while the camera
ends on the illuminated painting of Dike. Overall, this scene occurs in a historically accurate setting, yet one

Were Athens Superior Or Superior?
The argument of which two city–states, Athens or Sparta was superior has finally been answered. The two city–
states had been bitter rivals for years trying to see which of them was superior. A city–state is an area that includes
the city and the surrounding land around it. They have their own government, culture, beliefs, customs etc. Each
city–state was different from the rest of the city–states. Superior means "better" than, and one of the two city–states
Athens and Sparta was definitely superior. Athens was a superior city–state because of their economy, education,
and government.
The first reason Athens was superior to Sparta was because of Athens great economy. In the text it states,
"Athenians bought and sold goods at a huge marketplace called the agora" (Franklin 5). The agora allowed the
citizens to buy and sell what they wanted to. The Spartans discouraged trade. In the agora they could buy household
items and they could buy and sell slaves. That made them superior because they could trade to make money and
buy what they wanted to. The trade of Athens might have been superior but so was their education. ... Show more

Franklin says, "Athenians believed that a good citizen should have both an intelligent mind and a healthy body." (8)
The boys in Sparta were taught to fight at the age of 7 with little other education. Sparta only thought of war and
never thought of peace and education like Athens. In Athens, they were taught different subjects than just war in
Sparta. The men still went to war but started their training at the age of 18. Over all, the education of young boys
and girls is better in Athens than in Sparta. The education in Athens helped to make superior military soldiers and

How Did Socrates Influence Ancient Civilization
Our present day world is shaped by the countless people, places, and events in the past. It is important to
understand that one small decision can change the entire course of history. Often, when an event occurs, or a
decision is made, it triggers a domino effect, which triggers more events. Some of the domino effects caused by
events in the past still carry on to modern times. More importantly, there are specific individuals who have made a
lasting impact to civilization. The following figures in ancient history have made large–scale contributions to
human knowledge, ruling, arts, or possibly a combination.
Socrates was a philosopher who has had a remarkable influence on modern society. He is very well known for his

He mainly wrote tragedies, and is known for the character Oedipus. Perhaps his most important contribution to
drama was the inclusion of a third actor in a performance ("Sophocles | Greek Dramatist"). This allowed the
dramatist to include more characters and make the onstage interactions more complex. Therefore, the conflict of the
play could widen, and the plot of the story could become more complicated ("Sophocles | Greek Dramatist").
Another of his accomplishments, though minor, was that he introduced background scenery into the play, enhancing
the atmosphere and adding to the overall viewing experience ("Sophocles | Greek Dramatist"). It is highly possible
that he also increased the chorus size from 12 to 15 members ("Sophocles | Greek Dramatist"). Furthermore, unlike
earlier dramatists, Sophocles focused more on the development of characters, making them more relatable to the
audience ("Sophocles"). This style is a lot closer to the style used today in drama. Sophocles work was admired by
Greeks and elements of his style continued to live on after his life. In fact, Aristotle acclaims his Oedipus the King
as an example of the flawless tragedy ("Sophocles"). In conclusion, Sophocles made a wide array of achievements
in drama, rendering him one of the most influential people in ancient

The movie is a historical drama set in ancient Egypt under Roman Rule during the 4th century A.D. Agora follows
the beautiful and brilliant Hypatia (Rachel Weisz) who is an astronomer, philosopher, and mathematician. She leads
a group of students who are fighting to save the wisdom of the Ancient World, as the war between the Pagans and
Christians overflow into the streets of Alexandria. Among her students is the amusing yet privileged Orestes (Oscar

between his secret love of Hypatia and the freedom he could have if he joins the rising Christians.
Agora does contain a number of historical inaccuracies. Among these are:

mathematicians to even be considered knowledgeable.

Inaccuracies In Agora
Agora
There may have been some controversies about Hypatia's spiritual beliefs, however, her devotion, knowledge, and
perseverance can be admired by all. This movie depicted some accurate historical facts and events surrounding the
life of Hypatia in Alexandria. However, there were some inaccuracies of events that were discovered. For example,
The Great Library of Alexandria did not exist in during this time period. During the center portion of the movie,
there was a dramatized scene where the Christians were attacking the Agora while the Pagans were in the library
attempting to save the important books. This was not a factual depiction of this event. The Great Library was
actually built in 288 B.C. and destroyed in 48 B.C. The movie's setting is based around the 4th century A.D. which
is a clear indication that the library was no longer in existence.* Another example of the film's inaccuracy is the
account and event of Hypatia's death. In the film, her death was the result of her knowledge and her ability to
reason which labeled her as a witch. In addition, her death did not have anything to do with her religious beliefs or
the fact that she was a woman. Hypatia's death was due to politics. In the film, a follower of Cyril threw a stone at
Orestes, the man was arrested, tortured and later killed. In revenge, the Christians became outraged and agreed to
kill the person who Orestes loved most which was Hypatia ( ). Therefore, the film's depiction of Hypatia being

Critique Of Agora Critique
Agora Critique The 2009 feature film, Agora, which was directed by Alejandro Amenábar, depicts the religious,
political, and intellectual events in the city of Alexandria during the life of Hypatia, a female philosopher. Since this
film's primary goal is the entertainment of the audience rather than accurate historical instruction, there are some
fictitious or unproven details in the film that give an erroneous impression of history to the common viewer. The
movie gives a fair representation of the turmoil within both pagan and Christian groups, but there is a slight bias
towards the antagonization of Christians. One way this prejudice takes shape is the film's failure to fairly represent
the role of St. Cyril of Alexandria amidst these chaotic times as it relates to his views on women in education, his
involvement in the death of Hypatia, and the expulsion of the Jews.
One aspect in which St. Cyril was wrongfully depicted was his attitude toward the role of women, especially
regarding their position in the world of academia. In the movie, Cyril reads a passage from I Timothy which states
that women should be submissive to men. He then attempts to pressure Orestes into publicly condemning Hypatia
for her involvement in political and intellectual affairs. Women were thought to be inferior to men back then, and
some Christians during this time period did denounce intellectualism, believing that only God's Word was
necessary. St. Cyril, however, did not appear to share

Women In Ancient Greece
In Ancient Macedonia, there were marketplaces called an agora which was usually located in the center of the city.
Many people from all ages would shop at an agora to buy everyday necessities. Women specifically shopped at
agoras to buy fruits, vegetables, and clothing for their families. In Ancient Macedonia, women were not the head of
the family, but they were in charge of taking care of the family. They cooked, cleaned, and shopped for their
household while their husband (who was the head of the family) worked or served in the military. I am looking at
the perspective of women. During the ancient times of Macedonia, women usually married around age 14 to 16.
Being married at a young age, women had to know how to cook and clean for them to be able to take care of their
families. This is why agoras were so popular for women in Ancient Macedonia. Agoras were filled with merchants
and crafters who sold imported spices and beautiful pots. Women often came to agoras to stock up on food or to
even shop for themselves. Women in Macedonia paid very close attention when it came to their outlooks. Looking
at the women in the lower class, they could not afford much because they were poor or they were slaves.

Despite Agora's overall operational success, the stores face a number of challenges. Mr. Rahim and other senior

The attempts to differentiate Agora from its competitors seem to be causing some of the confusing results.
Successful communication regarding Agora's superior service seems to be reinforcing consumer associations about
higher prices and limiting the number of new customers. Successfully delivering superior service, on the other
hand, seems to be generating satisfaction among those customers who have chosen to shop at Agora. The challenge
then is to develop strategies to attract large numbers of new customers who will continue to shop at the stores.
Advertisements that feature prices for specific product seem to generate more traffic from new and occasional
customers, but featuring product prices tends to undermine positioning the Agora brand along non–price
dimensions. This positioning dilemma is creating uncertainty, particularly in the advertising decisions being taken
to increase customer traffic volume. A related issue is the definition of competition. Agora's strategic position is to
differentiate itself from the local Kaccha bazaars on all dimensions except price. Since Agora built its first
supermarket at Dhanmondi, the industry has seen several changes, including the appearance of other supermarkets
offering products in environments similar to Agora's. It is not clear whether the target market's definition of
"competition" is the same as Agora's strategic definition of competition. There

Greek to Roman Architecture
When shown iconic pictures of the Parthenon and the Colosseum, most people automatically know which building
is Greek and which is Roman, However, show them pictures of the Forum of Trajan, the Pantheon, or the Agora,
and they will be flipping coins trying to guess which is Roman architecture and which is Greek architecture. It is
one thing being able to identify which building belongs to which civilization, it another being able to distinguish
the subtle style changes within each mega structure. Very similar to a textbook and essay, Greek architecture is like
a textbook, and the Romans used the textbook to write an essay. Although not completely copied or "plagiarized"
the foundation of Roman architecture is founded on Greek architecture. With the help of the Etruscan and Roman
ingenuity, the Romans were able to take Greek architecture to a whole new level and call it Roman architecture.
Greek architecture has been commonly looked at as the building of democracy, often time people associate the
post–and–lintel building element with the Greeks. However, the Romans used post–and–lintel system in their
architecture too. One of the ways of distinguishing which building belongs to which civilization, is simply looking
at the style of columns used. There are three post–and–lintel styles, Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. The Greeks
mainly used Doric and Ionic columns in their architecture. "The Parthenon is often viewed as the embodiment of
Classical Doric architecture" (97). The

appeals to a more academic–oriented reader. Someone who is an archaeologist or an anthropologist would find his
commentary in this style beneficiary in that it can be used presently to locate the things he describes. On the other
hand, Pausanias finds a way to intrigue the not so scholarly type of reader. The detailed and vivid backstories he
tells of the statues will not only capture the interest of those who are academically invested in the subject, but will
also intrigue just a simple average reader. For those looking to gain a high level of learning from Pausanias'
description, his almost technical manner of description when moving through the agora offers historical fact and
tangible things like architecture. Scholars note that he entered the Agora from the northwest corner and "looking

Analysis Of Agora Mobile Inc.
Company Introduction Founded in 2013, Agora Mobile Inc. is a Moncton–based technology startup that aims to
build a social platform, which helps people to build apps with little to moderate knowledge about the coding
languages. This patented platform uses a visual development tool (instead of traditional textual platforms) for the
creation and testing of web–apps. This platform also helps to deliver and sell these web apps to other registered
users within this platform, which creates a social networking environment for aspiring app developers within this
website. The company recruited hundreds of students of all ages across Atlantic Canada to build and test apps. It
recently recruited developers all over Canada to improve the platform and suggest ideas to enhance the
functionality and performance of its platform. It plans to launch the platform in the first half of October 2014. Thus,
having a social media strategy ready before the launch helps Agora to implement steps to enhance the launch
impact of the platform and thereby maximize the ROI. In this report, I suggest a four–step stage that can help to
determine the strategic direction of the company. In the first step, Agora's business objective of the social media
strategy will be determined. In the second step, Agora's target audience will be segmented into various categories.
These categories consist of various homogeneous groups, which will make scheduling customized campaigns and
newsletters easier. In the third

Was the Atomic Bomb Dropped on Hiroshima Justified Essay
Were the Americans justified in dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945? The
dropping of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in 1945 by the Americans is a very controversial issue
with no definite answer. Both sides of the issue have very justifiable arguments. Reasons for dropping the bomb
include the fact that Truman's options were limited at this point in the war, that the bomb did have the desired
outcome of Japans surrender and that the majority of reasons America had for dropping the bomb are justifiable. On
the other hand, the atomic bomb was complete new technology and there is no way that Japan could have possibly
been ready for it and for that reason the dropping of the atomic bomb is very ... Show more content on

There was also the question of time. The atomic bomb was by far the quickest way that America could see for the
ending of the war, and they were eager to end the war as before long, Russia would become involved making a
heavier casualty rate inevitable. America were also a very powerful country now they had the development of the
Atomic Bomb, it would have been a waste to not be able to show their true power and the true destruction they
could use through the bomb. There is also the point that the Americans were looking for revenge against the
Japanese, as they had injured and killed many American soldiers, and even more to come, had the Americans not
taken quick action. Looking back at the dropping of the bomb, it is possible to say that it was a method of
prevention in many different circumstances. Firstly, the dropping of the bomb meant that the war would be over:
'The atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended World War II. There can be no doubt of that.' [3] It is possible
that leaving the war longer could have resulted in a much worse fatality rate for both Japan and America. Also, the
dropping of the atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima effectively decided the use of atomic technology for
weapons for the future. Before the dropping of the

America was founded on the premise of equal opportunities for all. Despite this aspiration, American children
coming from various racial, cultural, and ethnic groups experience educational disparity. According to the
American Psychological Foundation (2012), these educational disparities are reflected among ethnic and racial

from minority groups have lower test scores on high–stakes tests, a higher likelihood of repeating a grade, and an

First, students receive instruction on grade–level standards in a mixed group setting. As Sichel and Bacon (2015)
demonstrated in their case study on the Abington School District, providing all students with the same opportunities
to learn and experience the curriculum improves achievement gaps (p.210). Additionally, students are provided
targeted instruction based on data retrieved from regular benchmarking. Students are placed in groups and receive
instruction regularly in math and reading skills with the goal of elevating achievement gaps. This personal learning
time is built into the school's daily schedule, and students attend one to five sessions a week depending on their
individual need. Additionally, students are able to attend social outing, field trips, and clubs not found in a
traditional school setting. Our school arranges for students to attend events throughout the state. Students have the

Gender Inequality In Agora
"Synesius, you don't question what you believe, or cannot. I must." – Hypatia The historical film Agora focuses on
a lot of points such as, politics, social status, gender equality, religion and astronomical views. The story revolves
around one of the most glorified women in ancient Alexandria, the mathematician/philosopher/astronomer, Hypatia.
She is first seen lecturing to her students about how things on Earth tend to fall down in a straight path downward.
She demonstrates this idea by dropping a handkerchief. Alongside her is the devoted slave, Davus, who seemed to
have a special feeling to his mistress. Two prominent characters are also introduced, namely, Orestes (lover of
Hypatia; later became the prefect of Alexandria) and Synesius (a faithful Christian; later became the Bishop of
Cyrene). The conflict in the movie starts when Pagan believers attack Christians who insult their Gods' statues. The

Essay Comparing Agora And The Messenger
In this movie review I will be comparing Agora, and The Messenger. Both films represent historic events in which
religious wars take place. Comparing Hypatia, and Joan of Arc, two influential women of different centuries and
eras. Hypatia, fighting for her beliefs in science rather than God, and Joan of Arc fighting for France in the name of
God.
Agora, is based in 4th century Alexandria ruled by the Roman Empire. Greek philosopher Hypatia, teaches in the
Library of Alexandria, educates her student on theories of the suns rotation around the earth, where many of the
theories taught go back to Platonism. Agora's main focus is the religious war between the Pagans, and Christians.

crimes of heresy, she is then execute by the church for her crimes of witchcraft that have been fabricated by
members of the church. Joan of Arc dies before the age of 20 and burned alive in the marketplace of Rouen.
Both Agora and The Messenger were excellent films, both based on two powerful and inspirational women Hypatia
and Joan of Arc. Agora shows the transition to Christianity, as where The Messenger shows the strong hold
Christianity has on the people of France and the hope that Joan of Arc brings to its people through the word of God.
Hypatia and Joan of Arc both question the word of God, and refuse to follow the popular beliefs in religion at the

An Independent Woman in the Film, Agora
When I was reading "Subverting Sex and Love in Alejandro Amenabar's Agora," I noticed how Paul portrayed an
aspect I had appreciated while watching the film Agora. As I watched the film Agora I noticed how in contrast to
the other movies we have seen in class the female character was not defined by her relationship with men. For
example, in the film Cleopatra, the female lead Cleopatra was defined in terms of her relationship with men. Even
though Cleopatra was involved in politics, she and to win the love of Antony and Caesar in order to get power. Paul
states this idea in "Subverting Sex and Love in Alejandro Amenabar's Agora," when he states that Hypatia "cannot
be defined primarily through her relationships with men." (Paul, "Subverting Sex and Love in Alejandro
Amenabar's Agora," 230) As I watched the film Agora, I noticed how Hypatia voiced her opinion in front of men
with no fear and appreciated the scenes which portrayed her findings. For example, in the scene in which Hypatia is
with Aspasius and discovers the model of the ellipse, the heliocentric model. To me, to have an Ancient Roman film
portray the intelligence of a women was a positive aspect of the movie Agora. Also, her students in the film, such as
Synesius and Orestes were loyal to her and tried to help her in the end of the film. Hypatia's bravery is also

What Is Eight Key Qualities That Exceptional Teachers?
John Hattie as cited by Drew (2011) identifies eight key qualities that exceptional teachers possess, including;
"student initiated learning, empathy, warmth, encouragement of higher–order thinking, encouraging learning,
adapting to differences, genuineness, and learner–centered beliefs" (p.86). In comparison when identifying my own
strengths as a teacher, I believe I am a warm, genuine teacher who possesses strong adaptation and empathy skills
and a belief in learner–centered education. However, my cyber–setting does not always allow me to portray these
characteristics. Additionally, I understand that in order to be a top–notch teacher, I need to encourage higher–order
thinking skills and student initiated activities. Moreover, I need to help Agora to strive for a more STEM–based
environment, as well as, eliminated my own biases while improving on my teaching abilities. When considering
Agora's current STEM practices, I would identify the setting as emerging in its understanding of what STEM truly
entails. Rigor and high–order learning are encouraged by administration and are essential elements in our lesson
plans. Teachers have received professional development on Norm Webb's Depth of Knowledge, an essential tool
that can move students beyond basic recall of facts to analyzing and synthesizing information (Aungst, 2014).

The Education Of The Cyber Charter School
When considering Vasquez 's (2013) guiding principles for STEM education which include: emphasis on 21st
century learning, focus on integration, challenging students, creating variety in instruction, and establishing
relevance (p. 18 –19), Agora's ability to meet these principles depends on which classroom you visit on each given
day. These guidelines have not been emphasized to teachers and due to our cyber–nature, consistency among
educators and instruction is a reoccurring issue. Although the raise of cyber–education is a response to 21st century
living where 'students and parents alike have grown to expect and demand the ability to customize various aspects
of their lives" (Public School Review, 2016, para. 16), many question whether this form of education can
adequately prepare students for 21st century learning. Thus Agora Cyber Charter School often fails to challenge
students, create variety or relevance, or support integration and must be restructured to adequately follow a STEM
format for learning. Although cyber–education is a response to 21st century living, does it prepare students for 21st

The status of living in poverty often makes families experience food–insecurity, or the inability to provide

uncertainty often lead to food insecurity and both have become a growing problem in America. As a teacher in a
cyber– charter school who severs a cross section of children throughout the state of Pennsylvania, I have taught

The Purpose Of The Athenian Army
Part 3
1) The Athenian Army
The purpose of the Athenian army was to was to secure Athenian democratic society. The army fought battles
against other Greek states and foreign states most often against oligarchies and aristocracies. The army was
managed by a polemarch (senior military title), along with ten generals from the ten tribes of Athens.
The largest component of the army was the infantry composed of hoplites (citizens fighting in a full set of armour).
They went into battle protected by a helmet, breastplate, and greaves (shin guards), carrying a large round shield
and long spear. The state would sometimes issue such equipment to citizens who could not afford a set of their own.
The Athenian army was primarily male citizens, who were made to enlist at the beginning of the year following
their 18th birthdays. For two years, new "cadets" (known as ephebes) trained full time. After training, they rejoined
public life, though they were committed to the army for 40 years. At any time, they could be called to duty to
defend Athens. The people elect two athletic trainers and instructors for them, to teach them their drill as heavy–
armed soldiers and to use the bow, javelin, and sling.
Richer Athenians enrolled in the cavalry, as always, a smaller elite military force made up of those wealthy enough
to own and maintain a good mount. The state would call upon an inspection and registration of all of the horses on

Agora Analysis
The film Agora, directed by Alejandro Amenábar, is set in Alexandria Egypt around the year 400. This time period
is very soon after the legalization of the Christian religion in the Roman Empire, and this fact is explicitly stated
near the beginning of the movie. The plot follows the real–world mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher
Hypatia, although in the movie her age does not match up with what it would have truly been at the time of the
events which are depicted, including her murder. She is shown as being consistently young throughout the movie
although her murder actually took place when she was in her fifties or her sixties. Two other key figures are Orestes
and St. Cyril the Christian Patriarch of Alexandria. The movie features the political struggle between Orestes and
St. Cyril as its central conflict along with the secondary conflicts of paganism and Judaism versus Christianity. The
main idea that the director seems to have intended for his audience is that religion is opposed to civilized behavior
and to intellectual and scientific progress. This is made evident by his distortion of historical facts to fit his bias
which will be discussed later. The film was recorded on the island of Malta and was released in 2009. At that time
and continuing into the present day, entertainment media contained a noticeable anti–religious sentiment. That
sentiment is clearly expressed in this movie as religious people are consistently portrayed as stupid, unthinking, and

Ancient Greek had many exemplary thinkers called philosophers and Socrates was one of them. He imparted about
knowledge, amity, and integrity as the Delphic Oracle declared Socrates as the wisest man in Athens. One of
Socrates' students was a philosopher named Plato who wrote an Apology about Socrates. Socrates was wise in
respect to the fact that he never accepted a "truth" that was told to him, without getting clear evidence to back it up.
He made the realization that people believed in polytheistic religion without even knowing where their ideas came
from. Athena was the most worshipped goddess among Athenians. Moreover, Ancient Greek formed city–states and

Athenian Architecture

  • 1. Athenian Architecture During war with Persia, Athenians dealt with famine, plague, and the destruction of their city but that was not the end of Athens. Instead, Athens bounced back and thrived entering into the Golden Age. The Athenians began reconstruction after victory with Persia was secure. The new city rose from a plain and as each level went upwards, its functions and architecture became more exalted. At the bottom there was the house of commoners, built from stone and mud with little concern for architectural merit. The fine art and architecture went into public buildings, one of these public institutions being the agora. When redesigned, the agora was made to be more elegant designed for greater comfort and show. Beautiful public buildings and temples ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Any merchant found to be selling inferior merchandise was fined. The expansion that occurred with the gymnasia and theater demonstrated the value the Athenians placed on public life and on physical prowess and discipline. The gymnasium was made up of a running track, a wrestling court, fields for throwing javelins and discus and served as a place to increase fitness or socialize. Theaters were carved out of the hillside and plays were regularly preformed and served as entertainment. There were 3 different kinds of plays: comedies, tragedies, and satyr plays. Tragedies had strong themes where the main character often went through a main plot such as defying the gods or battling for power and these often ended tragically. Comedies were lighthearted and crafted of political jokes, comments, and messing around. Satyr plays teased the idea of the tragic theme. In the play the actors would dress as satyrs a mythical creatures. Making theater admission for poorer citizens cheaper, the fine arts were democratized. Architects and urban designers Ictinus and Callicrates planned the new acropolis and build the Parthenon, the main temple that dominates the hill of Acropolis, while the sculptor Phidias carved the friezes on the Parthenon and created a 40–foot tall statue of ... • 3. Ancient Greek Tragedies "It still hosts plays and events," explained Theokles. "However, the southeast wall provides the best view of the oldest Greek theater below the Acropolis, the Theater of Dionysius. In fact, the stone seating dating from 330 BCE provided enough room for seventeen thousand people to enjoy plays such as the ancient Greek tragedies of Euripides and Sophocles. Moreover, the very meaning of tragedy comes from Greek plays. In essence, the ancient Greeks believed that the fate of mortals was at the mercy of forces beyond their control." Theokles then turned their attention back to the Parthenon and walked all around it to the back porch. "Once a frieze adorned the upper part of the Parthenon depicting epic battles with justice triumphing over injustice," Theokles informed them while he wiped off ... Nonetheless, Raphael honors Socrates, Aristotle, and Plato along with other ancient Greek philosophers in his masterpiece Renaissance fresco The School of Athens. This magnificent mural painting is in the Vatican City and honors the Greek ethos of philosophy as the culmination of human achievement because it seeks the knowledge of the causes of all things." The voice of the colossus Socrates still echoed in the passageways of the Ancient Agora, but Surina knew all too well the ramifications of asking too many questions. Theokles continued, "Now we have come to the Stoa of Attalos built in 150 BCE and reconstructed faithfully in the 1950s of marble and limestone. The stoa has a porch with two rows of columns leading into shops, functioning initially as an ancient shopping mall and presently as The Museum of the Ancient Agora. • 5. Flipped Classroom Analysis During my four years teaching at Agora Cyber Charter School, student achievement has been an upmost concerns. Traditionally, our student population has not done well on standardized test and each year our scores have gone down. Personally, I feel that our students lack a sense of overall performance character and need help developing the characteristics of perseverance, integrity, and responsibility. Additionally, we work within a unique platform in a virtual classroom that could lead to some progressive models of education. One model that I feel would be effective in the cyber environment is the use of a flipped classroom pedagogy. Not only would a flipped classroom enable us to more effectively differentiate instruction, it would increase ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is not an issue at Agora. The school possesses the technical advances to make the flipped classroom a success. Flipping the classroom would improve our students' performance character and lead to more meaningful learning. Athens vs. Sparta Danielle Palawasta Athens vs. Sparta Persuasive Research Paper Henry/Lih– LA/SS– Per. 3/7 Due: 3/22/13 Envision a world where the people are ravenous and yearning for any remnant of food they could obtain, where the society is overrun and no one has a free say. This is the type of society the ancient Spartans would have lived like unlike the ancient Athenians. The Athenians lived a far more diverse life if compared to Sparta. Ancient Athens was better to live in than ancient Sparta due to its efficient and honorable government and flourishing economy. Primarily, ancient Athens's efficient government was better than the ancient Spartan government due to its adroit Council, resourceful Assembly, and its direct democracy. The ... In comparison, the ancient Spartan economy was relied on farming and conquering other people. The ancient Spartans stole everything they needed, instead of trading. Given this information, the ancient Athenian economy was much more honest to their people, basing their economy off of trade. In addition, the Ancient Athenians were very successful in making their own currency. According to Bower and Lobdell, "Like most city– states, Athens developed its own coins to made trade easier. Coins were made of such metals as gold, silver, and bronze (Bower, Lobdell 262). The ancient Athenian currency was far more effective than the ancient Spartan currency because it was accessible to carry around. As clearly stated, Bower and Lobdell established that Sparta had "used heavy iron bars as money" (Bower, Lobdell 266). The ancient Athenians had to carry around as many light–weight coins as they wanted, whereas the Spartans had to carry weighty iron bars. Ultimately, due to its light weight capacity, the ancient Athenians' currency was more successful than the ancient Spartans currency. Furthermore, ancient Athens had an economy that was useful to every social class. When citizens came to the agora, they usually sold and bought goods they needed. • 9. Ancient Greek Cities Research Paper Ancient Greek cities can generally be seen as walking cities. Cities have smaller population than the state, which were occupied a smaller built up area. According to Doxiadis(1964), Athens can be one of typical walking cities in ancient Greek. It was built on human dimension. The average dimension of Athens is approximately 2 kilometres, it means people would not spend more than 30 minuets for walking across the whole city (Doxiadis, 1964). In other words, the distance between the functional places or dwellings to the centre was ordinarily shorter than 800 meters, which means it only takes 10 minuets on walking (Doxiadis, 1964). • 11. Admissions Essay: My Journey To The Academy Of Medicine Today was my last day of serving as a medical apprentice. I woke up and had picked fruit from my courtyard garden to keep me energized for today's events. I strolled through the agora (marketplace) on my way to the Academy of Plato when I came across three sickly children. As a healer, I had the greatest urge to examine and most of all soothe the children of their pain. However, time did not allow it, so instead I purchased a few loafs of bread, with the loose drachmas I had in my pocket. It is quite tragic that half the children in Athens die before they reach ten years of age. The look of gratitude on their faces reminded me of the reason I aspire to become a doctor. It is my passion to heal the wounded, cure the sick, and discover new treatments. The agora was bustling with people, I saw vendors, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Academy of Plato certainly is the home to all who seek knowledge. Among all the scholars, my mentor, doctor Mnesitheus, was awaiting me, for that day was the day I swore the Hippocratic Oath. A ceremony was held for the other medical students and I, it took place in the academy's courtyard. We formed a circle, the other students and I, and swore to the healing gods. We vowed we will do no harm in the name of science and medicine, " I swear by Apollo the Physician, and by Asclepius and Hygeia and Panacea and all the gods and goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will fulfill, according to my ability." The ceremony had concluded and I officially called myself a doctor. I made a promise to the healing gods when I took the oath that I will help those in need and practice medicine to my best ability. • 13. The Athenian Agora, Kerimeikos And The Acropolis There are a number of art and architectural features found in the Athenian Agora, Kerimeikos and the Acropolis. The Agora or market place has a number of buildings such as the Tholos, The Eponymous Heroes and the Strategion. The Kerimeikos or Ceramicus was the potters ' quarter of the city, from which the word "ceramic" is derived, and was also the site of an important cemetery and numerous funerary sculptures erected around the area. The Acropolis had many major buildings, the most prominent of them being the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike. An evaluation of primary and secondary literary sources gives insight into the main purposes of the buildings and the art within such as pottery and sculptures found within the context of these sites. To an extent the art and architecture in these sites reflect the significant cultural practices and beliefs of the ancient Athenians as it gives insight into what they truly valued. The Athenian Agora had a number of features in its differing buildings and along with their features they had a largely unique purpose. The Monument of the Eponymous Heroes was described as by Susanne as a "Marble podium that bore the bronze statues of the ten heroes representing the tribes of Athens" . • 15. Cleophon The Agora My film is a fictional tale based on historic events and using legitimate historical characters. Under the genre of war/political drama, this film focuses greatly on the final period of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and the Peloponnesian League. Many scenes in the film take place in Athens during a period of upheaval und unrest; therefore, filming scenes in sets of the Agora, will capture the scale of Athens at the time. One example is the trial of Cleophon, a scene that will be shot in a reconstruction of the Heliaia, the courthouse of Athens. An earlier scene detailing the arrest of Cleophon takes place in his fictional office on the outskirts of the Agora. The patriotic protagonist of the film is Cleophon, a democrat who wished ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It takes place in Cleophon's fictional office room, a simple square room with minimal furniture to emphasize the focus on Cleophon and his diligence. The scene occurs at nighttime and indoors, and will be dimly lit by closed lamps and candles. This minimal lighting will provide even more drama, as shadows will be cast along the walls. The main furniture in the scene is Cleophon's oak desk, covered with parchment, emphasizing Cleophon's business and desperation to stop the Peloponnesians. On the back wall of the office is a wall painting of Dike holding a scale of justice, representing the ironic injustice of the scene. Cleophon is seated at his desk, wearing a simple chiton to suggest his lack of concern for flamboyant, elite garments. The actor is in his early 30s, as the true age of Cleophon is not known. This age emphasizes the perspective difference between Cleophon and the older oligarchs with their superiority complex. The scene will begin with focus on a distressed Cleophon, busily working at his desk on plans to unite the people against the Peloponnesians. This distress will be quickly interrupted by the sound of the magistrates' police knocking on the door. Cleophon is then arrested and lead out of his office, while the camera ends on the illuminated painting of Dike. Overall, this scene occurs in a historically accurate setting, yet one ... • 17. Were Athens Superior Or Superior? The argument of which two city–states, Athens or Sparta was superior has finally been answered. The two city– states had been bitter rivals for years trying to see which of them was superior. A city–state is an area that includes the city and the surrounding land around it. They have their own government, culture, beliefs, customs etc. Each city–state was different from the rest of the city–states. Superior means "better" than, and one of the two city–states Athens and Sparta was definitely superior. Athens was a superior city–state because of their economy, education, and government. The first reason Athens was superior to Sparta was because of Athens great economy. In the text it states, "Athenians bought and sold goods at a huge marketplace called the agora" (Franklin 5). The agora allowed the citizens to buy and sell what they wanted to. The Spartans discouraged trade. In the agora they could buy household items and they could buy and sell slaves. That made them superior because they could trade to make money and buy what they wanted to. The trade of Athens might have been superior but so was their education. ... In Athens, they were taught different subjects than just war in Sparta. The men still went to war but started their training at the age of 18. It is important to understand that one small decision can change the entire course of history. Often, when an event occurs, or a decision is made, it triggers a domino effect, which triggers more events. Some of the domino effects caused by events in the past still carry on to modern times. More importantly, there are specific individuals who have made a lasting impact to civilization. The following figures in ancient history have made large–scale contributions to human knowledge, ruling, arts, or possibly a combination. He mainly wrote tragedies, and is known for the character Oedipus. Perhaps his most important contribution to drama was the inclusion of a third actor in a performance ("Sophocles | Greek Dramatist"). This allowed the dramatist to include more characters and make the onstage interactions more complex. Therefore, the conflict of the play could widen, and the plot of the story could become more complicated ("Sophocles | Greek Dramatist"). Another of his accomplishments, though minor, was that he introduced background scenery into the play, enhancing the atmosphere and adding to the overall viewing experience ("Sophocles | Greek Dramatist"). It is highly possible that he also increased the chorus size from 12 to 15 members ("Sophocles | Greek Dramatist"). Furthermore, unlike earlier dramatists, Sophocles focused more on the development of characters, making them more relatable to the audience ("Sophocles"). This style is a lot closer to the style used today in drama. Sophocles work was admired by Greeks and elements of his style continued to live on after his life. In fact, Aristotle acclaims his Oedipus the King as an example of the flawless tragedy ("Sophocles"). In conclusion, Sophocles made a wide array of achievements in drama, rendering him one of the most influential people in ancient ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This movie depicted some accurate historical facts and events surrounding the life of Hypatia in Alexandria. However, there were some inaccuracies of events that were discovered. For example, The Great Library of Alexandria did not exist in during this time period. During the center portion of the movie, there was a dramatized scene where the Christians were attacking the Agora while the Pagans were in the library attempting to save the important books. This was not a factual depiction of this event. The Great Library was actually built in 288 B.C. and destroyed in 48 B.C. The movie's setting is based around the 4th century A.D. which is a clear indication that the library was no longer in existence.* Another example of the film's inaccuracy is the account and event of Hypatia's death. In the film, her death was the result of her knowledge and her ability to reason which labeled her as a witch. In addition, her death did not have anything to do with her religious beliefs or the fact that she was a woman. Hypatia's death was due to politics. In the film, a follower of Cyril threw a stone at Orestes, the man was arrested, tortured and later killed. In revenge, the Christians became outraged and agreed to kill the person who Orestes loved most which was Hypatia ( ). Therefore, the film's depiction of Hypatia being killed ... Ipatia Research Paper Hypatia of Alexandria Hypatia, commonly addressed as Hypatia of Alexandria, was a mathematician, astronomer, astrologist, and philosopher during the time of Ancient Greece. The city of Alexandria that Hypatia lived in was originally part of Greece, until it was conquered by early Egyptians. Hypatia was born around 350 – 370 CE and was raised by her father, Theon. • 31. Critique Of Agora Critique Agora Critique The 2009 feature film, Agora, which was directed by Alejandro Amenábar, depicts the religious, political, and intellectual events in the city of Alexandria during the life of Hypatia, a female philosopher. Since this film's primary goal is the entertainment of the audience rather than accurate historical instruction, there are some fictitious or unproven details in the film that give an erroneous impression of history to the common viewer. The movie gives a fair representation of the turmoil within both pagan and Christian groups, but there is a slight bias towards the antagonization of Christians. One way this prejudice takes shape is the film's failure to fairly represent the role of St. Cyril of Alexandria amidst these chaotic times as it relates to his views on women in education, his involvement in the death of Hypatia, and the expulsion of the Jews. One aspect in which St. Cyril was wrongfully depicted was his attitude toward the role of women, especially regarding their position in the world of academia. In the movie, Cyril reads a passage from I Timothy which states that women should be submissive to men. He then attempts to pressure Orestes into publicly condemning Hypatia for her involvement in political and intellectual affairs. Women were thought to be inferior to men back then, and some Christians during this time period did denounce intellectualism, believing that only God's Word was necessary. Many people from all ages would shop at an agora to buy everyday necessities. Women specifically shopped at agoras to buy fruits, vegetables, and clothing for their families. In Ancient Macedonia, women were not the head of the family, but they were in charge of taking care of the family. They cooked, cleaned, and shopped for their household while their husband (who was the head of the family) worked or served in the military. I am looking at the perspective of women. During the ancient times of Macedonia, women usually married around age 14 to 16. Being married at a young age, women had to know how to cook and clean for them to be able to take care of their families. This is why agoras were so popular for women in Ancient Macedonia. Agoras were filled with merchants and crafters who sold imported spices and beautiful pots. Women often came to agoras to stock up on food or to even shop for themselves. Women in Macedonia paid very close attention when it came to their outlooks. Looking at the women in the lower class, they could not afford much because they were poor or they were slaves. Successful communication regarding Agora's superior service seems to be reinforcing consumer associations about higher prices and limiting the number of new customers. The challenge then is to develop strategies to attract large numbers of new customers who will continue to shop at the stores. Advertisements that feature prices for specific product seem to generate more traffic from new and occasional customers, but featuring product prices tends to undermine positioning the Agora brand along non–price dimensions. This positioning dilemma is creating uncertainty, particularly in the advertising decisions being taken to increase customer traffic volume. A related issue is the definition of competition. Agora's strategic position is to differentiate itself from the local Kaccha bazaars on all dimensions except price. Greek to Roman Architecture When shown iconic pictures of the Parthenon and the Colosseum, most people automatically know which building is Greek and which is Roman, However, show them pictures of the Forum of Trajan, the Pantheon, or the Agora, and they will be flipping coins trying to guess which is Roman architecture and which is Greek architecture. It is one thing being able to identify which building belongs to which civilization, it another being able to distinguish the subtle style changes within each mega structure. Very similar to a textbook and essay, Greek architecture is like a textbook, and the Romans used the textbook to write an essay. Although not completely copied or "plagiarized" the foundation of Roman architecture is founded on Greek architecture. With the help of the Etruscan and Roman ingenuity, the Romans were able to take Greek architecture to a whole new level and call it Roman architecture. Greek architecture has been commonly looked at as the building of democracy, often time people associate the post–and–lintel building element with the Greeks. However, the Romans used post–and–lintel system in their architecture too. One of the ways of distinguishing which building belongs to which civilization, is simply looking at the style of columns used. There are three post–and–lintel styles, Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. Essay On Pausnias Pausanias' description, in essence his writing style, can be seen as both an advantage or a disadvantage; the determination of his style's usefulness can only be made by each individual reader. Someone who is an archaeologist or an anthropologist would find his commentary in this style beneficiary in that it can be used presently to locate the things he describes. On the other hand, Pausanias finds a way to intrigue the not so scholarly type of reader. The detailed and vivid backstories he tells of the statues will not only capture the interest of those who are academically invested in the subject, but will also intrigue just a simple average reader. • 55. Gender Inequality In Agora "Synesius, you don't question what you believe, or cannot. I must." – Hypatia The historical film Agora focuses on a lot of points such as, politics, social status, gender equality, religion and astronomical views. The story revolves around one of the most glorified women in ancient Alexandria, the mathematician/philosopher/astronomer, Hypatia. She is first seen lecturing to her students about how things on Earth tend to fall down in a straight path downward. She demonstrates this idea by dropping a handkerchief. Alongside her is the devoted slave, Davus, who seemed to have a special feeling to his mistress. Two prominent characters are also introduced, namely, Orestes (lover of Hypatia; later became the prefect of Alexandria) and Synesius (a faithful Christian; later became the Bishop of Cyrene). The conflict in the movie starts when Pagan believers attack Christians who insult their Gods' statues. The Pagan believers are forced to retreat back to the Library of Alexandria due to the force of the unexpected ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Women are almost given the same chance as men to show off what they can do and exercise their rights since they were born. But I regret this gender inequality that happened before. I suddenly think that, what if women have already been given equal chances as men before? I think the world would go off a better course. Without a doubt, I admit that women are smarter than men. So think of all the possibilities that might happen. With the given chances today, I still don't know why some women still ask for gender equality. To end this movie review in Agora, I would like to make it a point that what happened in the history should remain as a history. Though this may lead to more developments in the future, it is best to live some data forgotten in the past and keep the present rolling to the future. Never let the past dictate the future. Never let your beliefs be swayed with hearsays. KEEP MOVING ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Essay Comparing Agora And The Messenger In this movie review I will be comparing Agora, and The Messenger. Both films represent historic events in which religious wars take place. Comparing Hypatia, and Joan of Arc, two influential women of different centuries and eras. Hypatia, fighting for her beliefs in science rather than God, and Joan of Arc fighting for France in the name of God. Agora, is based in 4th century Alexandria ruled by the Roman Empire. Greek philosopher Hypatia, teaches in the Library of Alexandria, educates her student on theories of the suns rotation around the earth, where many of the theories taught go back to Platonism. Agora's main focus is the religious war between the Pagans, and Christians. There were several times during Agora I was absolutely horrified ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Charles VII has drained Joan of Arc of what he thinks is all the useful ability she has to offer to help aid France and himself. Joan of Arc is then captured by enemy forces and taken prisoner. After failed attempts to execute Joan for crimes of heresy, she is then execute by the church for her crimes of witchcraft that have been fabricated by members of the church. Joan of Arc dies before the age of 20 and burned alive in the marketplace of Rouen. Both Agora and The Messenger were excellent films, both based on two powerful and inspirational women Hypatia and Joan of Arc. Agora shows the transition to Christianity, as where The Messenger shows the strong hold Christianity has on the people of France and the hope that Joan of Arc brings to its people through the word of God. Hypatia and Joan of Arc both question the word of God, and refuse to follow the popular beliefs in religion at the time. Hypatia questioned the word of God through her entirety due to her love for philosophy. Where Joan of Arc only began to question her beliefs as she neared the end of her life. Both women did remarkable things for history and excelled far more than others in their time periods. With their deaths so much was lost, not only to history but for the voice they held for women at the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. An Independent Woman in the Film, Agora When I was reading "Subverting Sex and Love in Alejandro Amenabar's Agora," I noticed how Paul portrayed an aspect I had appreciated while watching the film Agora. As I watched the film Agora I noticed how in contrast to the other movies we have seen in class the female character was not defined by her relationship with men. For example, in the film Cleopatra, the female lead Cleopatra was defined in terms of her relationship with men. Even though Cleopatra was involved in politics, she and to win the love of Antony and Caesar in order to get power. Paul states this idea in "Subverting Sex and Love in Alejandro Amenabar's Agora," when he states that Hypatia "cannot be defined primarily through her relationships with men." (Paul, "Subverting Sex and Love in Alejandro Amenabar's Agora," 230) As I watched the film Agora, I noticed how Hypatia voiced her opinion in front of men with no fear and appreciated the scenes which portrayed her findings. For example, in the scene in which Hypatia is with Aspasius and discovers the model of the ellipse, the heliocentric model. To me, to have an Ancient Roman film portray the intelligence of a women was a positive aspect of the movie Agora. Also, her students in the film, such as Synesius and Orestes were loyal to her and tried to help her in the end of the film. Hypatia's bravery is also portrayed in the scene in which "in class, she presents him with her bloodied menstrual rag, telling him that there is little harmony or beauty in the ... • 61. What Is Eight Key Qualities That Exceptional Teachers? John Hattie as cited by Drew (2011) identifies eight key qualities that exceptional teachers possess, including; "student initiated learning, empathy, warmth, encouragement of higher–order thinking, encouraging learning, adapting to differences, genuineness, and learner–centered beliefs" (p.86). In comparison when identifying my own strengths as a teacher, I believe I am a warm, genuine teacher who possesses strong adaptation and empathy skills and a belief in learner–centered education. However, my cyber–setting does not always allow me to portray these characteristics. Additionally, I understand that in order to be a top–notch teacher, I need to encourage higher–order thinking skills and student initiated activities. Moreover, I need to help Agora to strive for a more STEM–based environment, as well as, eliminated my own biases while improving on my teaching abilities. When considering Agora's current STEM practices, I would identify the setting as emerging in its understanding of what STEM truly entails. Rigor and high–order learning are encouraged by administration and are essential elements in our lesson plans. Teachers have received professional development on Norm Webb's Depth of Knowledge, an essential tool that can move students beyond basic recall of facts to analyzing and synthesizing information (Aungst, 2014). However, instructional time is not designated within our teaching scope and sequence to adequately promote higher–order thinking. Many of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Architectural custom and design has the capability to connect different cultures together over time and space, and this is true of the bequest of architectural forms that was made by the ancient Greeks and Romans . Greek and Roman architecture have been interconnected due to the similarities between the temples and other structures that the two civilizations formed. Roman architecture was greatly influenced by Greece, but there was a lot of differences as the Romans also diverged to form a separate uniqueness. The both cultures used three special orders of columns in temples building. The Doric order, the Ionic order and the Corinthian order . • 65. The Education Of The Cyber Charter School When considering Vasquez 's (2013) guiding principles for STEM education which include: emphasis on 21st century learning, focus on integration, challenging students, creating variety in instruction, and establishing relevance (p. 18 –19), Agora's ability to meet these principles depends on which classroom you visit on each given day. These guidelines have not been emphasized to teachers and due to our cyber–nature, consistency among educators and instruction is a reoccurring issue. Although the raise of cyber–education is a response to 21st century living where 'students and parents alike have grown to expect and demand the ability to customize various aspects of their lives" (Public School Review, 2016, para. 16), many question whether this form of education can adequately prepare students for 21st century learning. Thus Agora Cyber Charter School often fails to challenge students, create variety or relevance, or support integration and must be restructured to adequately follow a STEM format for learning. Although cyber–education is a response to 21st century living, does it prepare students for 21st century living? Technological literacy is as "the ability to use, manage, understand, and assess technology (International Technology and Engineering Education Association as cited by Vasquez, 2013, p.10). • 67. Analysis Of Agora Cyber Charter School According to Feeding America (n.d.), 46.7 million American people live in poverty including 15.5 million children. The status of living in poverty often makes families experience food–insecurity, or the inability to provide substantial, nutritious food to their children (World Hunger Education Services, 2015). Unemployment and job uncertainty often lead to food insecurity and both have become a growing problem in America. As a teacher in a cyber– charter school who severs a cross section of children throughout the state of Pennsylvania, I have taught many children from various socioeconomic backgrounds. This wide range of students has allowed me to expand upon my own knowledge of poverty in America and witness the impacts to a child's education. Agora cyber–charter school is quite unique. According to the Agora Cyber CS Charter School Plan (2015), the school has students from "more than 480 of 500 total school districts across the state." The student population is diverse and represents students from all races, ethnic groups, and religions. However from a socioeconomic perspective, our school has 70% of students that require for free or reduced lunch. A lunch that they opt not to receive when choosing to attend school from their home. The school has more students identified with special needs than normally found in a traditional setting. Overall, the school is faced with the challenge of serving students with severe academic gaps at their time of enrollment and a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. The Purpose Of The Athenian Army Part 3 1) The Athenian Army The purpose of the Athenian army was to was to secure Athenian democratic society. The army fought battles against other Greek states and foreign states most often against oligarchies and aristocracies. The army was managed by a polemarch (senior military title), along with ten generals from the ten tribes of Athens. The largest component of the army was the infantry composed of hoplites (citizens fighting in a full set of armour). They went into battle protected by a helmet, breastplate, and greaves (shin guards), carrying a large round shield and long spear. The state would sometimes issue such equipment to citizens who could not afford a set of their own. The Athenian army was primarily male citizens, who were made to enlist at the beginning of the year following their 18th birthdays. For two years, new "cadets" (known as ephebes) trained full time. After training, they rejoined public life, though they were committed to the army for 40 years. At any time, they could be called to duty to defend Athens. The people elect two athletic trainers and instructors for them, to teach them their drill as heavy– armed soldiers and to use the bow, javelin, and sling. Richer Athenians enrolled in the cavalry, as always, a smaller elite military force made up of those wealthy enough to own and maintain a good mount. The state would call upon an inspection and registration of all of the horses on an annual basis, so that the owner could draw a maintenance ... • 75. Agora Analysis The film Agora, directed by Alejandro Amenábar, is set in Alexandria Egypt around the year 400. This time period is very soon after the legalization of the Christian religion in the Roman Empire, and this fact is explicitly stated near the beginning of the movie. The plot follows the real–world mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher Hypatia, although in the movie her age does not match up with what it would have truly been at the time of the events which are depicted, including her murder. She is shown as being consistently young throughout the movie although her murder actually took place when she was in her fifties or her sixties. Two other key figures are Orestes and St. Cyril the Christian Patriarch of Alexandria. The movie features the political struggle between Orestes and St. Cyril as its central conflict along with the secondary conflicts of paganism and Judaism versus Christianity. The main idea that the director seems to have intended for his audience is that religion is opposed to civilized behavior and to intellectual and scientific progress. This is made evident by his distortion of historical facts to fit his bias which will be discussed later. The film was recorded on the island of Malta and was released in 2009. At that time and continuing into the present day, entertainment media contained a noticeable anti–religious sentiment. That sentiment is clearly expressed in this movie as religious people are consistently portrayed as stupid, unthinking, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Socrates was wise in respect to the fact that he never accepted a "truth" that was told to him, without getting clear evidence to back it up. He made the realization that people believed in polytheistic religion without even knowing where their ideas came from. Athena was the most worshipped goddess among Athenians.
