Abstract
This paper will discuss how ethics relate in our everyday lives and more specifically how ethics are
used in our workplace also how ethics are used by companies. This paper will also cover how
businesses have implemented ethical procedures, standards and how these businesses flourished
because of the effective use of ethical standards.
"I consider ethics, as well as religion, as supplements to law in the government of man."

Internally, Starbucks offers many benefits to its employees–including tuition reimbursement, partner
benefits, a wellness program and a 25 to 150% match in its 401(k) plan. (Examining the benefits of
corporate social responsibility, May1 2006) These factors are just some that contribute to the
success of Starbucks and provide the company with the foundation to build a coffeehouse on every
street corner. Another company that is perennially honored for its ethical conduct is Southwest
Airlines. Although the airline industry has been through what some may characterize as catastrophic
circumstances over the last several years Southwest has never cut employee pay. In fact, the
organization's employees took a voluntary pay cut after Sept. 11, 2001, rather than allow surging
costs to force Southwest to reduce its flight schedule. "I've been here 28 years," states Donna
Conover, Southwest's executive vice president of customer service, "and from the beginning, we've
felt that employees are our greatest assets." (Examining the benefits of corporate social
responsibility, May1 2006) An unethical company, however, can expect none of these benefits, and
it may actually be part of the reason for failing. A perfect example of an unethical fallout would be
that of the oil giant Enron. Former Enron chairman Kenneth Lay, discussing his company's collapse
due to fraud, and insider trading and tax evasion,

Social Networking Is A Vital Part Of Our Everyday Lives
Title Social networking has become a vital part of our everyday lives, however it poses many risk
and draw backs. Privacy is an illusion, stalking is at an all–time high, and time seems to flash past
us. Before you can comprehend the gravity of the situation, you must first grasp the concept of what
social networking is. How it works, what makes it so vital and essential, and then what makes it an
entertaining illusion. Thought–out this informative essay I will address all these issues and more,
accentuated with my own past experiences along with a few of my peers. When asked; what does
social media mean to you? What is the first think that comes to mind? A tool to help keep in contact
with friends and family? A way to keep up on the latest news and updates? Or even just a form of
entertainment. As time progressed through the years we've seen countless forms of social media.
One's ranging from Facebook, twitter, tumbler and even snapchat. Many would say Facebook is a
major part of their lives, and I can't blame them, I used to feel the same way, back when I used to
have a Facebook. Though, I soon found it to be a drama ensued playground. A place where
cyberbullying was made a synch, and nothing is private. "Facebook seemed like a big deal in high
school, so I got one. But as time progressed and I became more mature it seemed like it was nothing
but a waste of time and it was all drama. So I deleted it." A fellow classmate stated. For instance, a

Biography of Agustin Recha Mora
Agustin Recha Mora was born in May 1954, in Granada, Spain. He moved to Bilbao in 1967 and he
is teaching as a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Bilbao since 1979. Recha Mora has been into
a lot of contests and he has won many awards. Most of his work was for a reason, which is to show
the importance of the loss. In this report, I will be analyzing the form, content and context of one of
his works which is called Street towards Plaza Ercilla Moyúa and showing the intentions of Recha
Mora.
To begin with the line, we can see that the artist used one point perspective in order to draw this
painting. Therefore, this painting is consisted mostly from lines, we can see the lines in the center of
the image that takes our eyes until the end of the road where we can notice the buildings. Moreover,
there are a lot of horizontal and vertical lines in drawing the buildings and some of them in drawing
the shops and windows of the building.
Value in this painting is used in many parts. The lower part of the painting, the artist played with the
red color and changed the value to darker to show the damage more and this is creating texture in
the painting. In the center of the painting, there is a change in the grey value to show the depth of
the road and there is changing in the pink value in the upper left corner to show the reflection of the
sun. In addition, we can notice a change in value in the squares on the sidewalk from grey to beige
and we can notice that they are forming

Advertising Influences Our Everyday Lives
Advertising influences our everyday lives. Many advertisements today use offensive tactics. This
technique is used to capture the audience's attention, not necessarily to sell a product. Kilbourne in
"In Your Face...All Over the Place" Advertising Is Our Environment" talks about "how advertising
is our environment" (89). Advertising is more than just selling a procut. According to Kilbourne
"Even more important, advertising corrupts our language and thus influences our ability to think
clearly" (101). IN the Old Spice advertisement for body wash, smell like a man, man, the ad depicts
an idealized body image and idealized masculinity for men. According to Old Spice, the ideal man
is strong, adventurous, dominating, and can easily seduce women. Old Spice is using sexism to
promote its products. In the Old Spice body wash ad, there is a shower and a tub in the bathroom.
The bathroom is very clean. Two models are in the ad. One is female and the other is male. The
female is a white woman in her twenties with long black hair. She doesn't look like the average
women. The female doesn't have any wrinkle or scars. She looks like the perfect female. She is
made up to look like the women that men get if they use Old spice. She is standing outside of the
shower wearing just a white towel. She is staring up at the male like she is idolizing him. Her facial
expressions show that she thinks that this man is the perfect man. The ad puts the female bellow the

Human Sexuality Education : A Natural Part Of Our Everyday...
Human Sexuality Education Paper As a very natural part of our everyday lives and existence as
humans, it is perplexing how so many Americans are undereducated about human reproductive
systems and sex organs, their structures and functions, and the various effects and consequences of
human sexuality. The responsibility of properly educating young people about human sexuality is in
the hands of parents and schools. Educational programs in U. S. schools today, such as Abstinence
Only and Abstinence Plus programs, may not provide adequate information to teach young people
how to make knowledgable decisions in real–life situations about sex. Comprehensive Sexuality
Education programs have been shown to be much more effective at preventing teen pregnancies and
sexually transmitted infections (STI 's; SEICUS). As it is an extremely broad topic, "Sexuality
education is a life–long process of acquiring information and forming attitudes, beliefs, and values"
(SEICUS). However, the acquisition of fundamental knowledge, credible information, and
appropriate health resources can help in this life–long process and minimize unwanted or negative
effects. Perhaps the most important aspect of a quality sexual education program is for young people
and their parents or guardians to feel comfortable talking with one another about the topic. If
children are uncomfortable asking their parents questions about human sexuality, it is highly likely
that they will not turn to their parents for

Essay on Alice Walker's Everyday Use
Heritage is something that people see in various ways. When many people think of heritage they
think of past generation and where their family comes from. Other people place their heritage on the
value of things, such as old quits that are made from something sentimental. In Everyday Use this is
exactly how Maggie thinks of heritage. She wants the quits that were handmade out of her
grandma's dresses because to her that is a sign of her heritage. Alice Walker's story is based on
heritage. The narrator of the story has two daughters who could not be more different. One daughter,
Dee, is beautiful and cares a lot about finding her place in the world, and about fashion. Maggie on
the other hand is very practical. She does not see any reason ... Show more content on

Dee is the exact opposite because she places so much value on items. From a young age she was
very obsessed with fashion and her appearance to the outside world. When her house burned down
she did not even seemed concerned because she had hated that house. Her mom, however, would
never want a house to burn down because to her it represented hard work and survival. She knew
that her family needed a house to survive and she did not care how big it was, or what it looked like.
Because of the value she placed on being in style when her mom offered her quilts that her grandma
had made she did not want them because they were out of fashion. Ironically a few years later she
wanted that same quilt because to her it seemed to represent her heritage that she tries so hard to get
away from. "Identity was partly heritage, partly upbringing, but mostly the choices you make in life.
~ Bran" (Briggs) The choices that people make in their lives are what really affects the way that
they see their heritage. "We do not have to be ashamed of what we are. As sentient beings we have
wonderful backgrounds. These backgrounds may not be particularly enlightened or peaceful or
intelligent. Nevertheless, we have soil good enough to cultivate; we can plant anything in it."
(Trungpa) Dee was ashamed of her background in this story, but she would never admit it. She tried
so hard to get away from the life that she grew up with that she no longer identified her mom and
sister with her

Stereotypes Are Part Of Our Everyday Lives
Yomira Arrese Meri Culp Enc 1101 September 28, 2014 Home at last Stereotypes are part of our
everyday lives. In our society, there are countless things individuals are guilty of. One of those
guilts is stereotyping others even if it wasn't meant in a harmful and negative way, we all have been
a victim or the aggressor. In "Indian Education," Sherman Alexie perfectly encapsulates
stereotyping as a daily struggle. FIRST GRADE Tip toeing into the noisy classroom, I took a quick
glance at the unfamiliar faces. The crowded room gave my nose a whiff of modeling clay, crayons
and newly waxed floors. It was filled with dazzling pictures of the alphabet and a jigsaw puzzle rug.

whispered things to one another. Some of the girls linked their pinkies, to show that they were best

big, baby," My mother told me. It was picture day. My mother was teaching me how to smile so the
whites in my eyes didn't disappear. On my way to school, I constantly repeated "Don't smile too
big." A kid knows to not follow a parent's advice. "Sit up, back straight, legs crossed and hand on
thigh," The camera lady said, aggravated. I could tell she hated her job. Her tone of voice and
patience were at an all–time low. I did just as she said. "Smile on 3." "1...2...3" I smiled so big my
cheeks were hurting. Kimberly, class bully, blonde, lanky and literally a bag of bones pointed out
that my eyes disappeared when I smiled really hard. I think I know. FOURTH GRADE I spotted a
mob of individuals with curly sideburns and black top hats looking remarkably alike. I come from a
family where they eat and breathe soccer and watching young Jews play it brought me chills. It was

If it weren't for Ed, I wouldn't have accomplished my goal. I wouldn't have a black belt if it wasnt

Alice Walker's Everyday Use Essay
Alice Walker's "Everyday Use"
In the story "Everyday Use" the narrator is telling a story about her life and two daughters, who are
named Dee and Maggie. The narrator is very strong willed, honest, compassionate and very
concerned with the lives of her two daughters. Her daughter Dee is not content with her lifestyle and
makes it hard on Maggie and the narrator. The narrator is trying to provide for her family the best
way she can. The narrator is alone in raising the two daughters and later sends her daughter Dee to
college. The longer the story goes on the more the narrator shows how intelligent and how much she
loves her two daughters.

Mama is also very observant because when her daughter Dee comes and visits, Dee tells Mama that
she changed her name to Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo. This makes Mama feel that her daughter is
running from her heritage. So when Dee asks for some quilts that have been in the family for years,
Mama tells her, "No, they are for Maggie". This says to me that Mama is very quick to draw as far
as the actions of her daughter. She notices that Dee changed her name and abandoned her heritage.
Mama tells Dee that her name came from her grandmamma. Mama is very understanding also,
because she isn't mad at Dee for changing her name, and just tells her that she can't have the quilts.
Mama was a very interesting to me in this story, because she is so manly in the story. "I can kill and
clean a hog as mercilessly as a man", she says in the story. Mama is also aware that she is not the
brightest woman, because she says that she didn't go any further then the second grade. I love how
honest she is with herself. Like when she talks about never being able to hold a tune. Most people
would lie to their self and make it sound like they could sing if they wanted to. Mama is also a
dreamer, at times because she refers to things the way that they were. Like when she refers to her
education and the house that they use to have. They had a house before but there was a fire. Mama
also has some humor to her, "Why don't

Personal Narrative : My Dog, Loki
I was alone in my apartment at 8PM. My dog, Loki; an Australian Shepard, was by my side on the
couch. I live with my fiancé, but he 's currently at work. So I 'm home alone on the couch, waiting
for my "Knight in shining armor" to come home. As I 'm watching the latest episode of Steven
Universe,(Yes, I 'm a child. So what?) I hear a noise come from the front door. It 's too quiet to be
able to tell what it is. Loki barks at anything that he hears out of the ordinary, so the fact he hasn 't
moved puts me at ease. For now at least. It 's quiet for a while. For the next few hours, I 'm sitting,
watching TV. The noise I heard earlier has left my mind entirely at this point. I 'm so relaxed I start
to doze off. For three hours, I hold my dog and stare into space. Then out of nowhere, I hear it
again. It 's louder now. A lot louder. I can tell what it is now. It 's the sound of nails scratching on the
door. At this point, Loki noticed it too. He doesn 't bark like usual. He 's in between whimpering and
growling. Like he 's scared, but knows there 's danger. I find this weird, because this dog isn 't afraid
of anything. I stay silent. I hadn 't noticed it yet, but I was holding my breath. It 's times like this I
hate living here. I 'm on the fourth floor of my complex building, so jumping out the window is out
of the question. We also don 't have a peephole, so I can 't check to see what 's on the other side of
the door without opening it. I then have the stupid idea

Technology Is Making Its Way Into The Everyday Lives Of...
For many generations the idea of a device that could recognize you simply by your eyes has been
the stuff of science fiction. It was an invention that seemed intangible. However, over recent years
this imaginative and seemingly futuristic technology has become a thing of the present. Each iris has
a unique pattern, like fingerprints, however iris scans have proven to be more accurate and distinct.
Slowly but surely, this novel technology is making its way into the everyday lives of Americans. For
example, colleges, such as George Mason University have begun to use iris scans as a form of
identification in cafeterias; even airports have started to introduce this innovation (MacRumors,
2014). Not only this, but the invention has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows just how efficient the new scans really are and how quickly it works. The device works
using algorithms and iris codes, collected in phasors (FBI, nd). Once a picture is taken of an
individual's iris these algorithms can be used to encode the pattern into a database which can be
used again to match their identity in the future (MacRumors, 2014). Each iris can be described by
256 bytes (FBI, nd). This device can impact many areas, just as the standard iris scan was able to do.
However, despite the many areas this new technology is beginning to effect, the criminal justice
field is one of the regions most primarily impacted. Security within the justice field is a major area
the IOM handheld iris scan impacts. In past years, there have been issues reported regarding
escaped prisoners; with iris scans such as these this occurrence becomes extremely unlikely. An
example of this is Raymond Taylor. Taylor was a convicted murderer who escaped in using the
cover of his cellmate's identity to pass through security unnoticed (Welte, 2010). Not only is this a
breach of safety, but it is also a wide wake up call to the level of precaution that is necessary to take
in a community in order to ensure the continued wellbeing and the maintenance of peace in a
population. Police officers strive to maintain this and the justice system as a

Character Change By Harold Crick
Characters will change and develop throughout a story in several ways. Whether we see a character
changing their routine, or changing a relationship, a character's development is an important part of
any fictional story. Many characters will develop in a way that is relatable to the readers life, whish
is one of the purposes of authors creating certain characters. Many readers need a character to relate
to his/her life to remain interested to see how the character will develop and maybe apply the
development to his/her own life. Harold Crick began everyday of his life the same way. He got out
of bed each morning, brushed his teeth the same number of times, dressed himself, and caught the
same bus to go to work at the exact same time every day. Almost the same can be said about the life
of Gregor Samsa. He woke up everyday at the same time every day to catch the same train that he
took every day to get to work. Both of these characters lived very monotonous lives, and it only
takes one day to change each of their lives forever. When first introduced to these characters, we get
a different type of introduction for each of them. When we first meet Harold Crick, we are brought
directly into his daily routine. The narrator describes every part of his routine down to brushing each
of his 32 teeth 76 times. We immediately know what he does every day, where he does these things,
and that it would be the same every weekday. The Metamorphosis begins with Gregor already being

Looking For Alaska Challenges
Challenges are a part of everyday life, and they change us in different and unexpected ways. The
theme challenges create change (within individuals) can be a pivotal part of a text. Characters and
people that face challenges have to change their ways of thinking, or even their lives in order to
overcome these challenges. The texts Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, Every Day by David Levithan,
Looking for Alaska by John Green and Not If I See You First by Eric Lindstrom all show how
challenges create change in not just one individual but multiple people throughout the texts.
Carry On by Rainbow Rowell is a text that has excellent examples of how challenges can create

In his book, A is a person that moves from body to body every day but never having a body or life
of their own. David Levithan shows us how the challenge of love creates change through Rhiannon
and A. "It's as if when you love someone, they become your reason (pg 76)." A lets this love define
them, risking other people's lives in order to be with the person they love, even though they know
they shouldn't– "I know I am not supposed to interfere" (pg 127). This shows how A has changed,
because, before A met Rhiannon, they would never have strayed from the daily routine of another
person's body. "Now I'm letting my life hijack all these other lives for a day. I am no staying within
the parameters. Even if that's dangerous (pg 68)." A is also incredibly challenged by not having their
own body and their own life. "I am not a part of this and will never be a part of something like this
(pg 268)." "I can never have these things (pg 302)." They know that they will never be able to have
their own friends, their own job or their own life. Because of this, it is hard for A to find themself.
When A was younger it was incredibly difficult for them to not have a tomorrow, because everyone
around them did. This is because instead of living thinking of the next day, or the next week, or the
next month like we do, A lives day to day, assuming people's personalities and bodies. A's lack of

Kindness Essay
If you asked people what they thought kindness was, what would they say? Would they give a
generic answer? Would they say they didn't know? Many would say that is being nice to others. But
is that REALLY what kindness is? Is kindness for people to show appreciation for others? Is it a
way to show that you love someone? Not recently. Recently it has become a mask, a way to gain
attention, and a way to make people think you are better than them.
Kindness is a mask people use to hide their true identity. People use kindness as an excuse to draw
attention to themselves. It is used as a way for people to say, "Hey, look at me! I did something
nice!" Quite often, celebrities and politicians post thing on social media, doing this exact thing. ...

are a great people. They act very kind and nice, but truly are just hiding what is truly happening.
Kindness is truly, just a mask, a cover for what we don't want others to see.
Kindness is also a way to get attention. It used as a way to get people to look at you and notice you.
Many use do this everyday. They seek attention, and therefore do something nice. They boast about
it, and get the attention they "deserve." This is something that we see everywhere, all of the time. It

of kindness. They see an opportunity to get attention and dive right in. They use kindness as the way
to get attention. They use it to get attention and a reputation of perfection. An immense amount of
people boast and brag about how they did something good, and everyone knows. They tell everyone
and hope to get people telling them they are so cool, and that they are perfect. But this just makes
people think that they are better than others.

about in the not too distant future how robotics will be a part of everyday society, how it will be

The Impact Of Implementing Art On Everyday Lives
The Impact of implementing Art in daily lives "Art is you being free from all of the world's
heaviness". – Cathy Malchiodi, Ph.D. Many people face problems each and every day of his or her
life. Often times in life, many people face overwhelming obstacles in their life that can become out
of their control. Art has the ability to make one's life of everlasting learning, growth, and
deliverance. Pioneered in the 1940s, art therapy has been found to express personal concerns,
interest, current situations and reflections on self–aspects; such as personal weakness and strengths.
Unfortunately, there has been a decrease in incorporating the arts in citizens daily lives, most
importantly throughout schools. Everything we encounter on a daily basis consists of art, something
as simple as thinking has everything to do with the philosophy of art. It is vital to stress the
importance and benefits art therapy plays in one's life today, therefore, Art therapy should be
implemented more throughout schools because it allows you to express your inner self, improve
health crisis, and better learning in education. The nature of art is expressing oneself. The main
principles of art can be demonstrated throughout the following activities such as, dance, drama,
music and visual arts, However, there are numerous ways of expressing yourself through creative
practices. All of the creative arts have different approaches and affect people in different ways. Art

Pathos In Lightning Crashes Ethos
When most people think of the circle of life they imagine the Lion King, right? They don't think of
any of the realities that actually do happen. They don't think about the people dying in one room
while one is being born in another. "Lightning Crashes" by Live embodies the circle of life
perfectly. Live is an American rock band originating for York, Pennsylvania. The song was released
in September of 1994 as a single for their album Throwing Copper. Ed Kowalczyk, one of the
members of Live, dedicated this song to a high school friend who passed away from a drunk driving
collision. The friend had donated several organs. This song specifically speaks to how she gave a
new life to others by donating her organs. Kowalczyk has said that he envisioned the music video to
be in a hospital, where there is plenty of deaths and births taking place. Instead of that vision, the
video takes place in a home, giving off a more peaceful feeling and a happy ending atmosphere. The
opening of the music video portrays the image of a new mother giving birth in one room, while in
another room an elderly woman is dying, symbolizing one life being brought into the world as
another is taken. Even though "Lightning Crashes" does not use the appeal of logos, it displays a
strong usage of pathos and offers a credible source of ethos to draw in its listeners. The song
practices several emotional metaphors throughout the lyrics, the music video displays emotional
imagery, and it can relate to outside

Music in Our Everyday Lives
Our everyday lives are affected by music. People listen to it in the car, while grocery shopping, in
the movies, at home, and practically anywhere else possible. There are many different types and
styles of music, the most influential being Hip–Hop/Rap music, followed by Rock and Roll. Music
is often a mood–altering device used to make the listener feel a sense of belonging, happiness, or
sorrow. The different genres of music can be used to describe a certain group of people, whether it
be by clothing, style, attitude, or sometimes ones social class. Hip–Hop/Rap music is believed to
have the most influence on the way a listener of that genre, acts and carries on their life. (Lommel

In the underground music scene, bands sometimes will not even have enough money to rent a cheap
hotel for a night to catch up on sleep, as well as bathe, certain kids from the area the band has

The Tightness of the Indie scene is one that has been a reason for the success of many bands that
have worked their way to the top. Yellowcard is a band that has recently found huge success with

is one of the tightest there has ever been. There are many different noticeable ways in which the
type of music a person listens to, ties into their daily activities. The most prominent is clothing style,
as well as physical appearance. The Punk–Rock/Emo teenager, has a certain type of dress that often

The Effects Of Inequality On The Everyday Lives Of The...
Marriage and Family
Analytical Response
How does inequality pay out in the everyday lives of the children/families in Lareau's book? How is
inequality reproduced? Give specific examples from the book
There are various forms of inequalities dealing with children and/or families, so much so that time
would not permit them to be discussed. First, there are basically three groups in society: Upper–
class, Middle (working) class, and the Poor. In her study Lareau broke these groups into sub–groups
mainly either black or white. According to www.study.com "Social inequality is the existence of
unequal opportunities and rewards), or different social positions or statuses within a group or
society." Based on www.thwink.org. "More than anything else, an analytical approach is the use of
an appropriate process to break a problem down into the smaller pieces necessary to solve it. Each
piece becomes a smaller and easier problem to solve."
In this response we will be viewing several different inequalities on different levels and different
social groups. Lareau's study groups of different races and ethnicities. The names will not be
mentioned just the race and class. The group study is a typical group study but not a definite one for
all in the mentioned social groups. In viewing the activities of a child from an upper–class group
and with a few minor different approaches also the middle–class group, these children (some time
black) may have a two parent household, living in the

Analysis of Patches: Quilt and Community in Alice Walker's Everyday Use
In a critique titled "Patches: Quilt and Community in Alice Walker's 'Everyday Use'" (Short Story
Criticism: Excerpts from Criticism of the Works of Short Fiction Writers, 1990), the authors reveal
that tradition and the explanation of holiness were key elements throughout the story. The writers
began the analysis by discussing the significance of a quilt; a quilt is a complete piece of artwork
that is essentially made up of fragments. These patchwork quilts, when effectively put together,
exposed a way of life. The Africans traditional way of life was one of sacredness and usefulness. By
using scraps from old clothes they were able to create a masterpiece that ... Show more content on

As her daughter arrives, she looks around the yard and recalls the old house. The old house which
went up in flames and terribly burned Maggie, her youngest girl. Dee, however, was happy to see it
go up in a blaze. In her eyes, the house was a disgrace. The older of the two girls, she liked the finer
things in life. She was energetic and loved to stand out through her personality and clothes. The
colorful clothes she was wearing when she arrived made this obvious. Dee, who changed her name
to Wangero after joining "...the radical, black nationalists of the 1960s and 1970s...," was now
promoting"... a suddenly fashionable, or stylish, interest in what she passionately describes as her
'heritage'" (416). Through the influence of American fashion, Wangero corresponds her own style to
the notion that black is beautiful. The girl who once despised African custom now supports the
traditions and wants to acquire the precious quilts made by her grandmother which were promised
to her sister. However, Dee only shows her detachment from traditional ways by wanting the quilts
because they are "fashionable" and "priceless" (416). Just as the fire symbolized her role in relation
to her community, so does the desire to obtain the quilts. She insists on having what she is told to be
stylish. When Maggie stands up and proclaims that Dee can have them since she does not need them

Monster Persuasive Speech
When I say "monsters", I don't mean the ones that only come out at night and hide in the darkness,
I'm talking about the monsters that reside in our minds. The monsters that we deal with on a daily
basis, and overwhelm us if we don't control them. We all have these monsters, no matter if they are
huge or minuscule, and how much they affect our lives. The monsters that I deal with are constantly
driving me towards procrastination and anxiety, and I must learn to overcome, or I will be
consumed.
Procrastination, possibly the worst and most destructive monster I have. Procrastination is the
reason for most of my problems, and I can never overcome it. I live with it, and it is a part of me, so
overcoming it is out of the question. The best I can do is deal with it. Procrastination was best
explained by Tim Urban, who compared the brain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anxiety is my second biggest monster, partly because it is a huge side–effect of procrastination. It is
a constant stress in the back of the mind that only says negative things about the future. A voice that
tells the victim, "You won't get that paper done, you're going to fail." A voice that never stops and
tells the victim that they did a good job, because according to anxiety, I can only do wrong. It is
anxiety that limits the victim from doing great things because of the failures along the way, and the
inability to forget the bad, and focus only on the good. The glass is always half–empty for anxiety,
which means it is almost impossible for the victim to think positively about the future. I compare
anxiety to Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, attached to Professor Quirrell's head,
constantly whispering evil commands. Anxiety is a silent killer, and a hard one to deal with, but it is
easier to overcome than procrastination. It is my second worst monster because I can overcome
anxiety in short spans, and I can halt the effects it at some

A Doll 's House By Henrik Ibsen
As we are humans we love the repeated events of life. As evidenced in our most loved literature and
shows. The great everlasting mask of what is really behind everything or what really is there.
Continuously asking why again, again, and again, never satisfied. Nora from A Doll's House by
Henrik Ibsen provides one of the favorite themes linking her to the Showgirls of Las Vegas, the
stuffed animals that roamed the land in the past, and Edna from The Awakening by Kate Chopin.
Illusion is what seems to binds people but, is the illusion reality or fantasy or both? A Doll's House
covers themes that reoccur in everyday life. Illusion sets the pace in the play as well in our everyday
lives. A Doll's House is a story of Nora, a mother who like a doll or puppet, has been controlled by a
master, her father and husband. As the play moves along, it becomes clear that Nora went disobeyed
the law and the ideals of her current master her husband to save his life. Once he knows, he is
utterly terrified. He never sees it as an act of love until the fear is waivered. That is the last hope of
Nora, his second reaction should have been his first, to be a man and support her and their family.
Having her final hope diminished, Nora rises to be the one to change her life, leaving her husband
and children. This occurrence during it's time is also somewhat frowned upon in today's society.
Nora in her own way was a showgirl, from the Tarantella, to her own life. As the exhibit states, "The

Have you ever gone to Chinatown supposing to find a culture full of African Americans? Probably

people are accepted as equals and certain jobs are not handed out to favored ethnicities. This form of

The Value Of Nature Within Our Everyday Lives
In order to further understand the value of nature within our everyday lives both the passages of
Leanne Simpson, David Chambers and Helen Watson address the importance of perspectives and
the ways in which different knowledge is viewed within the world. In Land As Pedagogy:
Nishnaabeg Intelligence and Rebellious Transformation written by Leanne Simpson she highlights
the importance of indigenous traditions and knowledge as a way to obtain decolonization through
sharing Nishnaabeg stories. She allows the reader to understand that indigenous traditions and
knowledge such as the Nishnaabeg intelligence view the land as pedagogy and offer processes such
as "coming to know" (2014, p. 7). For instance, Simpson (2014) explains this process as " ... Show

The river of water from the sea is seen as the Western knowledge and the river of water from the
land is Yolngu knowledge. Through examining this metaphor we are able to understand that the
mediation between each knowledge involves transformation and change. According to Chambers
and Watson (1989) " be that as it may it should not deter us from mediating between different
worlds, after all in contemporary times it is the only hope humankind has. The world is now too
well connected to allow the luxury of alienation within on conceptual system." (Exhibit 1, p. 2).
They do not look at making one knowledge privileged from the other, which raises the question on
how can we change the western attitude to nature and land? Where does this start? Another
important question these authors raised includes through examining both indigenous and western
cultures, what can this teach us?
Since, Leanne Simpson (2014) draws the reader to think about the value of indigenous cultures and
traditions this allows for the reader to be struck with many questions and concerns. Personally, I felt
very emotional after reading this text because the ways in which Simpson explains the values of her
culture is very motivating and provides a deep amount of thought. She explains many important
aspects as mentioned previously with coming to know as well as aspects such as spiritual
knowledge and theory in indigenous perspectives. This allowed for me to continuously

information you want with the touch of a glass screen from a device that fits in your pockets. In this
same period of time, shopping used to involve planning a trip to a brick and motor store and hope
they had the product you were looking for, and at the price you wanted to pay. If you lived in a
small market, you didn't have the choices to comparison shop other stores. In today's age, a

The Desire To Escape In Eveline And Araby By James Joyce
"Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don't we consider
it his duty to escape?... If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we're partisans of liberty, then
it's our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can," asserts J.R.R. Tolkien.
We occasionally need to have our heads in the clouds and be lost in those. Everyone, at some point
in their lives, has the desire to escape from the dull routines of everyday lives. James Joyce conveys
this desire effectively in his short stories called "Eveline" and "Araby". Even though the plots are
completely different, both the stories have protagonists who are lonely, desperate and long for the
means to escape. The two stories also have unhappy endings due to the cruelties and responsibilities
of life. Through the use of characterization and the creation of hopeful and depressing tones, James
Joyce reveals the desire of the protagonists to escape from the cruelty in the mundane of everyday
lives.
The young boy in "Araby" is depicted to be infatuated with Mangan's sister who lives across the
street from him. The narrator describes the extent of his love, "Every morning I lay on the floor in
the front parlour watching her door." From the beginning of the story, the narrator is characterized to
be desperate and it deteriorates as the story progresses. Whether it's at home or elsewhere, he cannot
stop thinking about his dream girl. The following quote describes his

Technology And Technology Essay
Assignment 5 Writing When it comes to the topic of technology, most of us will readily agree that as
one of the major innovations of our society, it is a necessity to everyday life. Where this agreement
ends, however, is on the questions regarding how technology influences writing: Do these
technologies make it easier for you to join conversations? Do they improve or degrade your thinking
and writing? Whereas some are convinced that digital communication is making us dumber in terms
of writing due to quality of information and conversations, others maintain that digital
communication is making us smarter because information and conversations are instantaneous.
Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, the authors of "They Say/I Say": The moves that matter in
Academic Writing, contend that digital communication is neither improving or degrading writing.
Having thousands of resources at our fingertips how can technology be making us dumber? Critics
say that technology provides us with an overwhelming amount of information where there is a less
chance of finding relevant, helpful information, and often times Wikipedia is the first choice for
information. The internet has many unreliable sites and information causing it to be challenging to
find credible information. The quality of conversations is also lost as texting and social media
causing writing to deteriorate as poor writing habits are put into use, for example, abbreviations.
Also, writing is often not revised as it does

Adopted Heritage in Alice Walker's Everyday Use Essay
Each of us is raised within a culture, a set of traditions handed down by those before us. As
individuals, we view and experience common heritage in subtly differing ways. Within smaller
communities and families, deeply felt traditions serve to enrich this common heritage. Alice
Walker's "Everyday Use" explores how, in her eagerness to claim an ancient heritage, a woman may
deny herself the substantive personal experience of familial traditions.
Narrated by the mother of two daughters, the story opens with an examination of one daughter's

knows that, unlike Dee, she could not "(look) a strange white man in the eye" (Walker 91). The
younger daughter, Maggie, like her mother, lacks the education and style important to her sister. She
carries scars on her arms from the fire that destroyed their house, reads clumsily to her mother, and

Out Out by Robert Frost
Robert Frost is the author of Out Out––, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, and Nothing
Gold can Stay. His literary work communicates deep meaning through the use of metaphoric
language and deception. Being raised most of his life on a farm; his works perceive the natural life
of a normal person while out in nature. "Frost believes that the emphasis on everyday life allows
him to communicate with his readers more clearly; they can empathize with the struggles and
emotions that are expressed in his poems and come to a greater understanding of 'Truth' themselves"
(Robert Frost: Poems Themes). The poem Out Out––, is about life and how it could end at any
moment by death. Thus, the title is known to have come from a scene in Macbeth, "The way to
dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!" (23; Macbeth). With this poem, Frost emphasizes death as a
result of the everyday life on a farm as a young boy, who by accident or with the lack of attention
has severed his hand, lost too much blood, and died. Like a candle being blown out, death can
become us at any moment of our everyday lives. In Robert Frost's poem Nothing Gold can Stay, the
theme is also about death like it also is in Out Out–, as well. Yet, this poem emphasizes more about
the transience of life rather than the suddenness of life ending. "Nothing Gold can Stay" is about the
appreciation for the golden days while the cycle of life continues and death becomes of each and
every one of us.
The theme of Out Out, also has to

Teaching Science Is Very Important For Our Everyday Lives.
Teaching Science is very important for our everyday lives. Science help us to understand of how

challenges and limitations.
The first challenge is the science curriculum in secondary school: this curriculum is very dry, heavy
and we are obliged to explain it all and it takes a very long time to finish it and prevents us to realize
different methods of learning to explain the content in a clear and thorough manner. In addition,
prevents us from using the different teaching methods and to realize all the experiments necessary

The second challenge faced by Science teachers is when they teach outside their specific Science
specialism : Science teachers can teach different scientific subjects at secondary level, although they
are specified in a single subject in their university study, which causes a great problem because they
teach in a space outside their study what influences on the students' learning and on their self–
confidence dealing with students ' questions, or preparing a lesson, choosing an activity or
experience that stimulates student learning, setting up laboratory experiments, associating and
applying various concepts and principles to everyday situations, generating students' interest and
passion for the scientific field.
Teachers teaching outside their area of specialism face considerable challenges in lesson preparation
and science teaching. First, they need to understand the structure and nature of the discipline and
learn unfamiliar content knowledge, which is known as subject matter knowledge.
Secondly, they need to transform the content knowledge into suitable activities, analogies,
demonstrations or simulations and adapt them to the different students' abilities to help them learn,
what is described by Shulman (1986, 1987) as pedagogical content knowledge.

The Swimmer Theme
We ignore it, we do not realize it and we certainly do not want to come to terms with it but at the
end of the day, irrespective of how we, humans, feel about it, the passage of time is inevitable. Time
is taken for granted, it is not something we pay much attention to in our everyday lives – most of us
cannot even afford to do so. Our lives are slow, as is the process of realizing that we are gradually
being absorbed into oblivion, disappearing bit by bit in our own time and turning ourselves into
mere memories that in the grand scheme of things are virtually irrelevant. The Swimmer by John
Cheever is a short story that, in an incredibly accurate manner, illustrates how the neglect of reality

The Sociological Imagination Of Our Everyday Lives
In order to make sense of the purpose of our everyday lives and our place in society, humans
participate in a concept called the sociological imagination. This concept enables a person to
"understand the larger historical scene in terms of its meaning for the inner life and the external
career of a variety of individuals"(Mills, The Sociological Imagination). When applying the
sociological imagination to my own experiences, I am able to locate myself society, particularly the
larger structures of Education. By doing, so I am able to find purpose in the education system
despite its pitfalls. In order to make sense of what we are doing in our lives as individuals we must
examine the history and institutions of society at large. This is what the sociological imagination
does; it helps us define our purpose in society. For example, the education system today is "suffering
from narration sickness"(Friere 71) meaning that students passively listen while the teachers narrate
content. It is obvious to anyone that has gone through the formal education that there seems to be no
real purpose to what we do in schools. There is less learning taking place, but rather depositing. The
students are empty vesicles to which the teacher deposits information for the student to receive,
memorize and repeat. Paulo Freire calls this type of learning the "banking" concept of education in
his book "Pedagogy of the Oppressed". In this banking system, oppression is a main characteristic

The Meaning and Maintenance of Heritage in Alice Walker's Everyday Use
In Alice Walker's "Everyday Use," Walker uses, the symbolic significance of the quilt in this story to
represent the heritage of this family as their heritage signifies where they came from and their
traditions and cultural values. Walker demonstrates, that the importance of the quilt was to display
the family's history from generation to generation in hopes that each would understand and
appreciate their family's background. For instance, the character Dee who misinterprets her family's
background as well her own self–identification, fails to embrace the importance and value of the

The narrator's oldest daughter, Dee, thinks heritage is a thing of the past – something that should be
framed or placed on the wall, to be viewed as an artistic piece of art the will reminder of her family
heritage. Walker clearly illustrates Dee's interpretation of family heritage as one of misperception
(Hoel, 1).
Early on in this story walker displays how Dee and Maggie differently view their heritage. For
instance, once the family's house burned down, Maggie was severely affected by the tragedy of not
only losing the very home she grew up in but her self–confidence as well due to the scars she
obtained to her body from the fire. The narrator pronounces, that Dee did not embrace any meaning
to the home she had grew up in. Walker implicates, that within her misperception about her heritage,
it was just a house to her in no way associated to the family's heritage at all (Walker, 1).
Another illustration, walker gives of Dee's misperception about her own African–American heritage
is voiced when she proclaims to her mother and sister that she has changed her name to "Wangero."
When her mother inquiries about the change to her name, Dee says, "I couldn't bear it any longer
being named after the people who oppress me" (Walker, 3). According the narrator Mama, the name

Factors That Affect Our Everyday Lives
We make important decisions that affect our everyday lives. Every decision we make has a
consequence. When I make a decision, I choose to think long and hard about that choice because I
know how much a bad decision can affect me negatively. Looking back, there are multiple decisions
that occurred that I either regretted or approved. The three most important decisions I have made
was when I decided to go to Carlsbad High instead of Sage Creek High, going all out in my first
year in football, and helping my friend with depression.
One decision that I made in my life that affects me greatly is when I chose to go to Carlsbad instead
of Sage Creek. When I was in the middle of deciding, I listed the pros and cons if I went to either
school. One example about the pros of going to Carlsbad High is they have a football team, my
older sister already goes to Carlsbad High, the people that go to Carlsbad are typically more laid
back/relaxed and so on. Some pros I thought of for Sage creek was my favorite basketball coach of
all time was coaching the varsity basketball team, some of my close friends were already going to
Sage Creek High, and the School is nicer than Carlsbad High. I thought long and hard about the
decision, but when I chose to go to Carlsbad I had a feeling I made the right decision. If I chose to
go to Sage Creek I probably would not have as good of grades, because of the trimester system.

If it was hurt and contorted in pain, it meant he loved her. But it also meant she thought too much of
herself. All her life, they had told her, that's what he looked like when she cried. She wanted to
believe it so badly. But lately she couldn't be certain of anything, and if he loved her, she felt guilty,
because she couldn't love him back. She'd tried, and he made her feel cherished, but every time she
remembered what she was, she couldn't help but imagine what it would be like if he saw her like
this, too. Would he look at her like some disgusting thing he wiped off his shoe? She couldn't bear to
think of it. She would rather keep her distance than see his eyes when he saw her faithlessness and
her filth. She imagined him walking to her from the far side of the dead–end street, where only he
could transcend that barrier. He towered her, with dark hair and olive skin and a nose that looked
like it had been broken once and never healed quite right. It made his face look strong, but it was
nothing imposing. His gait was calm, confident, unhurried. His hands, long–fingered and calloused
from working with wood, rested peaceably at his sides. She saved the thought of his eyes for later,
because oddly, all of her frailty and all of his strength coexisted together in there. But that was just
her imagination. She didn't look at him. She looked at the shadow of him that pooled at her feet and

The Media Has Much Influence On Our Everyday Lives Essay
In our technology centered society, the media has much influence on our everyday lives. What is
shown in the media not only shapes our opinions, but our actions as well. August 9th, 2014, Michael
Brown; an unarmed black man, was shot and killed by the police. US Official News states that the
report filed on the incident includes information that there was a struggle between Brown and the
officer, leading to the shooting. The Michael Brown case sparked much controversy, and started
what is known today as the, Black Lives Matter movement. This alleged case of police brutality also
started the conversation about the officers wearing body cameras. While there are officers already
sporting these cameras, this event is what started the whole nation talking about whether or not,
every officer should be wearing a body–worn camera. There is a divide between those who believe
the cameras will help keep our officers and citizens safe, and those who believe the body–worn
cameras are not worth the cost. When it comes to whether or not police officers should use body
cameras, it is complicated. The complex nature of this point in question has not stopped government
officials from trying to cause the law choose a side. There has been much talk on the body–worn
cameras amongst those in Congress. This talk includes bills, resolutions, and budget configuring.
The Texas Senators discussed a plan on how to regulate the employment of such cameras. This bill
includes details such as when

Ethics In Our Everyday Lives

  • 1. Ethics in Our Everyday Lives Ethics In our everyday lives Joshua L Young Brian Kester PSY 110 August 20, 2011 Abstract This paper will discuss how ethics relate in our everyday lives and more specifically how ethics are used in our workplace also how ethics are used by companies. This paper will also cover how businesses have implemented ethical procedures, standards and how these businesses flourished because of the effective use of ethical standards. "I consider ethics, as well as religion, as supplements to law in the government of man." Thomas Jefferson Ethics in our Everyday Lives. As a society we are faced with ethical problems every day, ... Internally, Starbucks offers many benefits to its employees–including tuition reimbursement, partner benefits, a wellness program and a 25 to 150% match in its 401(k) plan. (Examining the benefits of corporate social responsibility, May1 2006) These factors are just some that contribute to the success of Starbucks and provide the company with the foundation to build a coffeehouse on every street corner. Another company that is perennially honored for its ethical conduct is Southwest Airlines. Although the airline industry has been through what some may characterize as catastrophic circumstances over the last several years Southwest has never cut employee pay. In fact, the organization's employees took a voluntary pay cut after Sept. 11, 2001, rather than allow surging costs to force Southwest to reduce its flight schedule. "I've been here 28 years," states Donna Conover, Southwest's executive vice president of customer service, "and from the beginning, we've felt that employees are our greatest assets." (Examining the benefits of corporate social responsibility, May1 2006) An unethical company, however, can expect none of these benefits, and it may actually be part of the reason for failing. A perfect example of an unethical fallout would be

Privacy is an illusion, stalking is at an all–time high, and time seems to flash past us. Before you can comprehend the gravity of the situation, you must first grasp the concept of what social networking is. How it works, what makes it so vital and essential, and then what makes it an entertaining illusion. Thought–out this informative essay I will address all these issues and more, accentuated with my own past experiences along with a few of my peers. When asked; what does social media mean to you? What is the first think that comes to mind? A tool to help keep in contact with friends and family? A way to keep up on the latest news and updates? Or even just a form of entertainment. As time progressed through the years we've seen countless forms of social media. One's ranging from Facebook, twitter, tumbler and even snapchat. Many would say Facebook is a major part of their lives, and I can't blame them, I used to feel the same way, back when I used to have a Facebook. Though, I soon found it to be a drama ensued playground. A place where cyberbullying was made a synch, and nothing is private. "Facebook seemed like a big deal in high school, so I got one. But as time progressed and I became more mature it seemed like it was nothing but a waste of time and it was all drama. So I deleted it." A fellow classmate stated. He moved to Bilbao in 1967 and he is teaching as a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Bilbao since 1979. Recha Mora has been into a lot of contests and he has won many awards. Most of his work was for a reason, which is to show the importance of the loss. In this report, I will be analyzing the form, content and context of one of his works which is called Street towards Plaza Ercilla Moyúa and showing the intentions of Recha Mora. To begin with the line, we can see that the artist used one point perspective in order to draw this painting. Therefore, this painting is consisted mostly from lines, we can see the lines in the center of the image that takes our eyes until the end of the road where we can notice the buildings. Moreover, there are a lot of horizontal and vertical lines in drawing the buildings and some of them in drawing the shops and windows of the building. Value in this painting is used in many parts. The lower part of the painting, the artist played with the red color and changed the value to darker to show the damage more and this is creating texture in the painting. In the center of the painting, there is a change in the grey value to show the depth of the road and there is changing in the pink value in the upper left corner to show the reflection of the sun. • 5. Advertising Influences Our Everyday Lives Advertising influences our everyday lives. Many advertisements today use offensive tactics. This technique is used to capture the audience's attention, not necessarily to sell a product. Kilbourne in "In Your Face...All Over the Place" Advertising Is Our Environment" talks about "how advertising is our environment" (89). Advertising is more than just selling a procut. According to Kilbourne "Even more important, advertising corrupts our language and thus influences our ability to think clearly" (101). IN the Old Spice advertisement for body wash, smell like a man, man, the ad depicts an idealized body image and idealized masculinity for men. According to Old Spice, the ideal man is strong, adventurous, dominating, and can easily seduce women. Old Spice is using sexism to promote its products. In the Old Spice body wash ad, there is a shower and a tub in the bathroom. The bathroom is very clean. Two models are in the ad. One is female and the other is male. The female is a white woman in her twenties with long black hair. She doesn't look like the average women. The female doesn't have any wrinkle or scars. She looks like the perfect female. She is made up to look like the women that men get if they use Old spice. She is standing outside of the shower wearing just a white towel. She is staring up at the male like she is idolizing him. • 6. Human Sexuality Education : A Natural Part Of Our Everyday... Human Sexuality Education Paper As a very natural part of our everyday lives and existence as humans, it is perplexing how so many Americans are undereducated about human reproductive systems and sex organs, their structures and functions, and the various effects and consequences of human sexuality. The responsibility of properly educating young people about human sexuality is in the hands of parents and schools. Educational programs in U. S. schools today, such as Abstinence Only and Abstinence Plus programs, may not provide adequate information to teach young people how to make knowledgable decisions in real–life situations about sex. Comprehensive Sexuality Education programs have been shown to be much more effective at preventing teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STI 's; SEICUS). As it is an extremely broad topic, "Sexuality education is a life–long process of acquiring information and forming attitudes, beliefs, and values" (SEICUS). However, the acquisition of fundamental knowledge, credible information, and appropriate health resources can help in this life–long process and minimize unwanted or negative effects. Perhaps the most important aspect of a quality sexual education program is for young people and their parents or guardians to feel comfortable talking with one another about the topic. If children are uncomfortable asking their parents questions about human sexuality, it is highly likely that they will not turn to their parents for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Other people place their heritage on the value of things, such as old quits that are made from something sentimental. In Everyday Use this is exactly how Maggie thinks of heritage. She wants the quits that were handmade out of her grandma's dresses because to her that is a sign of her heritage. Alice Walker's story is based on heritage. She knew that her family needed a house to survive and she did not care how big it was, or what it looked like. Because of the value she placed on being in style when her mom offered her quilts that her grandma had made she did not want them because they were out of fashion. Ironically a few years later she wanted that same quilt because to her it seemed to represent her heritage that she tries so hard to get away from. "Identity was partly heritage, partly upbringing, but mostly the choices you make in life. ~ Bran" (Briggs) The choices that people make in their lives are what really affects the way that they see their heritage. "We do not have to be ashamed of what we are. As sentient beings we have wonderful backgrounds. These backgrounds may not be particularly enlightened or peaceful or intelligent. Nevertheless, we have soil good enough to cultivate; we can plant anything in it." (Trungpa) Dee was ashamed of her background in this story, but she would never admit it. In our society, there are countless things individuals are guilty of. One of those guilts is stereotyping others even if it wasn't meant in a harmful and negative way, we all have been a victim or the aggressor. In "Indian Education," Sherman Alexie perfectly encapsulates stereotyping as a daily struggle. FIRST GRADE Tip toeing into the noisy classroom, I took a quick glance at the unfamiliar faces. The crowded room gave my nose a whiff of modeling clay, crayons and newly waxed floors. It was filled with dazzling pictures of the alphabet and a jigsaw puzzle rug. Ms. Soriano was mumbling. My mother was teaching me how to smile so the whites in my eyes didn't disappear. On my way to school, I constantly repeated "Don't smile too big." A kid knows to not follow a parent's advice. "Sit up, back straight, legs crossed and hand on thigh," The camera lady said, aggravated. I could tell she hated her job. Her tone of voice and patience were at an all–time low. I did just as she said. "Smile on 3." "1...2...3" I smiled so big my cheeks were hurting. Kimberly, class bully, blonde, lanky and literally a bag of bones pointed out that my eyes disappeared when I smiled really hard. I think I know. FOURTH GRADE I spotted a mob of individuals with curly sideburns and black top hats looking remarkably alike. I come from a family where they eat and breathe soccer and watching young Jews play it brought me chills. It was in New York that I honed my skills and began to learn about the beautiful game. This says to me that Mama is very quick to draw as far as the actions of her daughter. She notices that Dee changed her name and abandoned her heritage. Mama tells Dee that her name came from her grandmamma. Mama is very understanding also, because she isn't mad at Dee for changing her name, and just tells her that she can't have the quilts. Mama was a very interesting to me in this story, because she is so manly in the story. "I can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man", she says in the story. Mama is also aware that she is not the brightest woman, because she says that she didn't go any further then the second grade. I love how honest she is with herself. So I 'm home alone on the couch, waiting for my "Knight in shining armor" to come home. As I 'm watching the latest episode of Steven Universe,(Yes, I 'm a child. So what?) I hear a noise come from the front door. It 's too quiet to be able to tell what it is. Loki barks at anything that he hears out of the ordinary, so the fact he hasn 't moved puts me at ease. For now at least. It 's quiet for a while. For the next few hours, I 'm sitting, watching TV. The noise I heard earlier has left my mind entirely at this point. I 'm so relaxed I start to doze off. For three hours, I hold my dog and stare into space. Then out of nowhere, I hear it again. It 's louder now. A lot louder. I can tell what it is now. It 's the sound of nails scratching on the door. At this point, Loki noticed it too. He doesn 't bark like usual. He 's in between whimpering and growling. Like he 's scared, but knows there 's danger. I find this weird, because this dog isn 't afraid of anything. I stay silent. I hadn 't noticed it yet, but I was holding my breath. It 's times like this I hate living here. It was an invention that seemed intangible. However, over recent years this imaginative and seemingly futuristic technology has become a thing of the present. Each iris has a unique pattern, like fingerprints, however iris scans have proven to be more accurate and distinct. Slowly but surely, this novel technology is making its way into the everyday lives of Americans. Once a picture is taken of an individual's iris these algorithms can be used to encode the pattern into a database which can be used again to match their identity in the future (MacRumors, 2014). Each iris can be described by 256 bytes (FBI, nd). This device can impact many areas, just as the standard iris scan was able to do. However, despite the many areas this new technology is beginning to effect, the criminal justice field is one of the regions most primarily impacted. Security within the justice field is a major area the IOM handheld iris scan impacts. In past years, there have been issues reported regarding escaped prisoners; with iris scans such as these this occurrence becomes extremely unlikely. An example of this is Raymond Taylor. Taylor was a convicted murderer who escaped in using the cover of his cellmate's identity to pass through security unnoticed (Welte, 2010). Whether we see a character changing their routine, or changing a relationship, a character's development is an important part of any fictional story. Many characters will develop in a way that is relatable to the readers life, whish is one of the purposes of authors creating certain characters. Many readers need a character to relate to his/her life to remain interested to see how the character will develop and maybe apply the development to his/her own life. Harold Crick began everyday of his life the same way. He got out of bed each morning, brushed his teeth the same number of times, dressed himself, and caught the same bus to go to work at the exact same time every day. Almost the same can be said about the life of Gregor Samsa. He woke up everyday at the same time every day to catch the same train that he took every day to get to work. Both of these characters lived very monotonous lives, and it only takes one day to change each of their lives forever. When first introduced to these characters, we get a different type of introduction for each of them. When we first meet Harold Crick, we are brought directly into his daily routine. The narrator describes every part of his routine down to brushing each of his 32 teeth 76 times. A lets this love define them, risking other people's lives in order to be with the person they love, even though they know they shouldn't– "I know I am not supposed to interfere" (pg 127). They don't think about the people dying in one room while one is being born in another. "Lightning Crashes" by Live embodies the circle of life perfectly. Live is an American rock band originating for York, Pennsylvania. The song was released in September of 1994 as a single for their album Throwing Copper. Ed Kowalczyk, one of the members of Live, dedicated this song to a high school friend who passed away from a drunk driving collision. The friend had donated several organs. This song specifically speaks to how she gave a new life to others by donating her organs. Kowalczyk has said that he envisioned the music video to be in a hospital, where there is plenty of deaths and births taking place. Instead of that vision, the video takes place in a home, giving off a more peaceful feeling and a happy ending atmosphere. The opening of the music video portrays the image of a new mother giving birth in one room, while in another room an elderly woman is dying, symbolizing one life being brought into the world as another is taken. Even though "Lightning Crashes" does not use the appeal of logos, it displays a strong usage of pathos and offers a credible source of ethos to draw in its listeners. The Value Of Nature Within Our Everyday Lives In order to further understand the value of nature within our everyday lives both the passages of Leanne Simpson, David Chambers and Helen Watson address the importance of perspectives and the ways in which different knowledge is viewed within the world. In Land As Pedagogy: Nishnaabeg Intelligence and Rebellious Transformation written by Leanne Simpson she highlights the importance of indigenous traditions and knowledge as a way to obtain decolonization through sharing Nishnaabeg stories. She allows the reader to understand that indigenous traditions and knowledge such as the Nishnaabeg intelligence view the land as pedagogy and offer processes such as "coming to know" (2014, p. 7). For instance, Simpson (2014) explains this process as " ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The river of water from the sea is seen as the Western knowledge and the river of water from the land is Yolngu knowledge. Through examining this metaphor we are able to understand that the mediation between each knowledge involves transformation and change. According to Chambers and Watson (1989) " be that as it may it should not deter us from mediating between different worlds, after all in contemporary times it is the only hope humankind has. The world is now too well connected to allow the luxury of alienation within on conceptual system." (Exhibit 1, p. 2). They do not look at making one knowledge privileged from the other, which raises the question on how can we change the western attitude to nature and land? Where does this start? Another important question these authors raised includes through examining both indigenous and western cultures, what can this teach us? Since, Leanne Simpson (2014) draws the reader to think about the value of indigenous cultures and traditions this allows for the reader to be struck with many questions and concerns. Personally, I felt very emotional after reading this text because the ways in which Simpson explains the values of her culture is very motivating and provides a deep amount of thought. She explains many important aspects as mentioned previously with coming to know as well as aspects such as spiritual knowledge and theory in indigenous perspectives. • 29. The Desire To Escape In Eveline And Araby By James Joyce "Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don't we consider it his duty to escape?... If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we're partisans of liberty, then it's our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can," asserts J.R.R. Tolkien. We occasionally need to have our heads in the clouds and be lost in those. Everyone, at some point in their lives, has the desire to escape from the dull routines of everyday lives. James Joyce conveys this desire effectively in his short stories called "Eveline" and "Araby". Even though the plots are completely different, both the stories have protagonists who are lonely, desperate and long for the means to escape. The two stories also have unhappy endings due to the cruelties and responsibilities of life. Through the use of characterization and the creation of hopeful and depressing tones, James Joyce reveals the desire of the protagonists to escape from the cruelty in the mundane of everyday lives. The young boy in "Araby" is depicted to be infatuated with Mangan's sister who lives across the street from him. The narrator describes the extent of his love, "Every morning I lay on the floor in the front parlour watching her door." From the beginning of the story, the narrator is characterized to be desperate and it deteriorates as the story progresses. • 31. Technology And Technology Essay Assignment 5 Writing When it comes to the topic of technology, most of us will readily agree that as one of the major innovations of our society, it is a necessity to everyday life. Where this agreement ends, however, is on the questions regarding how technology influences writing: Do these technologies make it easier for you to join conversations? Do they improve or degrade your thinking and writing? Whereas some are convinced that digital communication is making us dumber in terms of writing due to quality of information and conversations, others maintain that digital communication is making us smarter because information and conversations are instantaneous. Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, the authors of "They Say/I Say": The moves that matter in Academic Writing, contend that digital communication is neither improving or degrading writing. Having thousands of resources at our fingertips how can technology be making us dumber? Critics say that technology provides us with an overwhelming amount of information where there is a less chance of finding relevant, helpful information, and often times Wikipedia is the first choice for information. The internet has many unreliable sites and information causing it to be challenging to find credible information. The quality of conversations is also lost as texting and social media causing writing to deteriorate as poor writing habits are put into use, for example, abbreviations. As individuals, we view and experience common heritage in subtly differing ways. Within smaller communities and families, deeply felt traditions serve to enrich this common heritage. Alice Walker's "Everyday Use" explores how, in her eagerness to claim an ancient heritage, a woman may deny herself the substantive personal experience of familial traditions. Narrated by the mother of two daughters, the story opens with an examination of one daughter's favoring of appearances over substance, and the effect this has on her relatives. In fantasy, she converses eloquently with Johnny Carson; in reality, she knows that, unlike Dee, she could not "(look) a strange white man in the eye" (Walker 91). The younger daughter, Maggie, like her mother, lacks the education and style important to her sister. She carries scars on her arms from the fire that destroyed their house, reads clumsily to her mother, and "knows she is not bright" (Walker 92). With increasing anxiety, Maggie awaits Dee's visit, and upon Dee's arrival, actually attempts to escape into the house. Her mother forces her to stay with her in the yard to greet Dee and her new husband. However Dee may wish them to be, this is who they are. Dee personifies her own values. "At sixteen she had a style of her own: and knew what style was" (Walker 92). With her husband, she arrives at her mother's home in a brightly–colored dress, adorned with flashy jewelry, her hair in a fashionable style unfamiliar to Maggie and her mother. Dee retrieves her camera from the car and takes pictures of her mother and sister in front of the house. "Frost believes that the emphasis on everyday life allows him to communicate with his readers more clearly; they can empathize with the struggles and emotions that are expressed in his poems and come to a greater understanding of 'Truth' themselves" (Robert Frost: Poems Themes). The poem Out Out––, is about life and how it could end at any moment by death. Thus, the title is known to have come from a scene in Macbeth, "The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!" (23; Macbeth). With this poem, Frost emphasizes death as a result of the everyday life on a farm as a young boy, who by accident or with the lack of attention has severed his hand, lost too much blood, and died. Like a candle being blown out, death can become us at any moment of our everyday lives. In Robert Frost's poem Nothing Gold can Stay, the theme is also about death like it also is in Out Out–, as well. Yet, this poem emphasizes more about the transience of life rather than the suddenness of life ending. "Nothing Gold can Stay" is about the appreciation for the golden days while the cycle of life continues and death becomes of each and every one of us. The theme of Out Out, also has to ... • 36. The Sociological Imagination Of Our Everyday Lives In order to make sense of the purpose of our everyday lives and our place in society, humans participate in a concept called the sociological imagination. This concept enables a person to "understand the larger historical scene in terms of its meaning for the inner life and the external career of a variety of individuals"(Mills, The Sociological Imagination). When applying the sociological imagination to my own experiences, I am able to locate myself society, particularly the larger structures of Education. By doing, so I am able to find purpose in the education system despite its pitfalls. In order to make sense of what we are doing in our lives as individuals we must examine the history and institutions of society at large. This is what the sociological imagination does; it helps us define our purpose in society. For example, the education system today is "suffering from narration sickness"(Friere 71) meaning that students passively listen while the teachers narrate content. It is obvious to anyone that has gone through the formal education that there seems to be no real purpose to what we do in schools. There is less learning taking place, but rather depositing. The students are empty vesicles to which the teacher deposits information for the student to receive, memorize and repeat. Paulo Freire calls this type of learning the "banking" concept of education in his book "Pedagogy of the Oppressed". In this banking system, oppression is a main characteristic of the ... Walker demonstrates, that the importance of the quilt was to display the family's history from generation to generation in hopes that each would understand and appreciate their family's background. The narrator's oldest daughter, Dee, thinks heritage is a thing of the past – something that should be framed or placed on the wall, to be viewed as an artistic piece of art the will reminder of her family heritage. Walker clearly illustrates Dee's interpretation of family heritage as one of misperception (Hoel, 1). Early on in this story walker displays how Dee and Maggie differently view their heritage. For instance, once the family's house burned down, Maggie was severely affected by the tragedy of not only losing the very home she grew up in but her self–confidence as well due to the scars she obtained to her body from the fire. The narrator pronounces, that Dee did not embrace any meaning to the home she had grew up in. Looking back, there are multiple decisions that occurred that I either regretted or approved. The three most important decisions I have made was when I decided to go to Carlsbad High instead of Sage Creek High, going all out in my first year in football, and helping my friend with depression. One decision that I made in my life that affects me greatly is when I chose to go to Carlsbad instead of Sage Creek. When I was in the middle of deciding, I listed the pros and cons if I went to either school. One example about the pros of going to Carlsbad High is they have a football team, my older sister already goes to Carlsbad High, the people that go to Carlsbad are typically more laid back/relaxed and so on. Some pros I thought of for Sage creek was my favorite basketball coach of all time was coaching the varsity basketball team, some of my close friends were already going to Sage Creek High, and the School is nicer than Carlsbad High.
