2. What is SKYCITY?
SKYCITY is one of the biggest entertainment complexes
in the southern hemisphere located in Auckland, New
Zealand. The complex is made up of a casino, a 700
seat theatre, several convention halls, 19 bars and
restaurants, 2 popular hotels and the main attraction
The Sky Tower. With most of these facilities being used
24/7 the amount of electricity that SKYCITY consumes
is around 40 million kWh annually.
3. The lights at SKYCITY are a spectacular site to see as
they are an attraction in themselves. Thousands of
lights are used illuminate the complex in a way which is
energy efficient but still has the same ambience. Since
2005 SKYCITY has had a Environmental policy in place
and have taken different actions to make sure this
policy is successful. The next few slides are detailing the
changes SKYCITY has made to be more sustainable.
4. INSIDE SKYCITY
SKYCITY has made an 80% energy saving by replacing
the lights in the corridors, lobby and lift areas with 10W
CFLs, which are Compact Florescent Lights. The
previous lights they used were 12V halogen which
actually generate more heat than light, this made the
corridors, lobby and lift areas in SKYCITY very warm but
not lit to their greatest potential.
5. SKYTOWER
The SKYTOWER was originally lit up with floodlights but
a new LED lighting system is now used. This new system
uses 66% less energy than the old one. LED lights are
also longer lasting and can produce millions of different
colours. The SKYTOWER uses a laptop to change the
colours on the tower which makes it an easy and quick
job. The lower part of the tower has also been changed
to use narrow beam HID luminaires which spill less light
into the night sky meaning that now only half of the
energy is needed to light the lower tower.
6. CASINO
SKYCITY has recently upgraded their gaming machines
in the casino to ones which emit less light and heat.
This reduces the amount of energy needed to keep the
machines at a constant temperature which makes for a
comfortable gaming environment.
7. KEY BENEFITS
The changes made by SKYCITY have a number of
benefits;
• They have saved 4.5 million kWh in just 2 years
• They have saved 80% energy by upgrading from
halogen to CFL lights
• They have saved 50% energy by reducing the number
of light tubes in the main car park from 4,750 to
3,000
• They have reduced 66% energy consumption by
using LED lighting on the SKYTOWER
