Researching film trailers conventions and genres to plan and create a romantic comedy trailer
1. I started researching film trailers before filming and planning this is so I can get a clear
understanding of film trailers. It was beneficial because it made things a lot clearer and
easier to understand it will also be helpful when filming and planning.
The purpose of researching before doing practical work is that we understand genres
and the narrative of film trailers. I researched about the codes and conventions of film
trailers to get a better understanding. I also researched into the music and sound that’s
used for film trailers. I looked into the genre Romantic Comedy because that is the genre
of trailer I will be making after all the research; I included images of popular rom/com
films and put important information on the PowerPoint slides. We are asked to have our
own Institutional logos in our film trailers we create so I created a PowerPoint about
institutional logos and added images of when the logos were used.
When I was researching about this information I used the internet a lot, I created
methodology tables, this table includes what websites and how the website provided me
with information for these pieces of work. I used Wikipedia, Slide share, YouTube and
IMDB.
I looked at various websites to see if the information was correct and so I knew that I
was looking at the correct meanings. I knew the information I was collecting was
relevant because I used sites that only give you information on films and I was
recommended certain sites.
I stored my work on my Blog which is located on the Haverstock Media website this is an
easy accessible webpage that can be used in and out of school. I organised my work in
categories and different units.
When researching about my chosen genre I found that every rom/com films has two
main protagonists a male and female, rom/coms normally start with a voice over
explaining the characters and their lifestyles and they are normally from the female
perspective. Locations that are usually used in rom/coms are big well-known cities, high
schools and parties.
I created a questionnaire for friends and family to complete, the questionnaire was to
find out where people watch and find out about trailers, what their favourite trailers
were and how many times they see a trailer or a film. This questionnaire helped me by
giving other opinions about films and what films other people watch, it also shows how
successful a film trailers is and how much one trailer does to promote a film.
My findings will help me understand my chosen genre a little clearer, how the narrative is
because I looked more into the genre. It will also help me when I come to writing my
script for the trailer. The research I have done will also help me when I start to plan my
storyboard because I have watched film trailers in my chosen genre so I have a better
understanding.
