1. My film opening is a hybrid genre of Sports Drama. My main target audience would be males from
the age of 13 to 30.
Identifying the target audience for your film is essential to the movies success. There are major
films for example the avengers and the fast and furious franchise that are successful due to
knowing their target audience. The money on marketing is well spent as they don't bother wasting
money on age groups which they know won't have an interest in their films.
It's important that I know my target audience for my media product. I conducted research on
IMDB which showed the demographic statistics of films which are similar to ours. The films I
checked out were Rocky and Cinderella Man as I feel my media products themes has similarities to
these 2 films.
This is the demographic statistical results from IMDB on Cinderella Man. These results show most
of the people who watch it tend to be from around 13-29 year olds of both genders, however
males dominate slightly more. These results also show that once over the age of 30 both genders
tend to lose a slight bit of interest in the movie.
The research which I conducted on IMDB shows The Cinderella man has an age rating of PG-13.
My film would also have this age rating as it is a real feel good motivational sports film. The reason
why I have not targeted people under the age of 13 is because of the dark themes that my
product contains regarding depression etc as it is a major theme in the film. I feel children under
the age of 13 would not quite understand the narrative. The Feel good factor which my media
product consists of would be the main reason why all age groups would want to watch it.
The research conducted on Rocky had very similar results to the research on Cinderella Man; the
main difference is that females are less interested in Rocky than they are in Cinderella Man. The
2. reason behind mostly Targeting males from the age of 13-29 is because the protagonist of the film
is a male so generally males may put themselves in to the protagonist’s boots. Another reason
behind targeting males from the age of 13-29 is because most core boxing fans are from around
the same age group so it may appeal to them more. Another key audience group which we look to
target are working class people. The reason behind this is because the protagonist in our film is
working class himself, he had a tough upbringing. Many working class people especially children
may be able to relate which would maximize their interest in the movie. Also our film product
would go on to show the journey of a working class man making it big time in the boxing industry,
so people who are working class will feel more engaged as they may be able to relate and have
aspirations of achieving similar goals.
People in the UK would be a target audience also this is because our opening is set in London. The
votes from users from the US on Cinderella Man is around 1/3 (33787 votes) showing that the film
is very popular in the states. This shows that one of the main target audiences for my film opening
should be the US market as a lot of the votes come from there.
Overall the main target audiences are males from the age of 13-29, working class people and the
US market as boxing films happen to be extremely popular there, probably because boxing as a
sport is most known over there.
