This document discusses different research techniques for films, including demographic profiling and quantitative/qualitative data collection. It provides examples of mainstream, alternative, and niche films. The document then details an exit poll survey conducted on two films, Bridget Jones and Blair Witch. The results showed Bridget Jones was more popular among female respondents aged 15-19, who generally enjoyed comedy genres. This case study demonstrates how research can provide useful audience data to inform future filmmaking.

Pr1 research techniques
1. Pr1 Research techniques
There are a few different ways to do research about films, in this document I will talk you
through the easiest ways to do so.
One thing you have to look at greatly is the Demographic scale which looks like this:
A – Upper middle class (Doctors, Professionals skills)
B – Middle class (Managers, intermediate skills)
C1 – lower middle class (supervisors)
C2 – Skilled working class (Skilled trades and manual workers)
D – working class (Semi and unskilled manual workers)
E – Those at the bottom of the ladder (Students)
There are also different types of the data we collect such as:
Quantitative Data – Is numerical data that can be implemented intographics and charts.
Qualitative Data – Data that is harder to interpret it usually includes facts or people’s
opinions.
Films
Mainstream films
The Harry Potter films are a very popular
within young adults are children, the films
that came from the best-selling book took
the world by storm and went from being a
book series to a world-wide franchise. The
mainstream films are the films that have the
biggest budget and the biggest income.
Alternative films.
An Alternative film is a filmthat isn’t as big as some of the block buster
movies like Harry Potter, this is because the actors aren’t as big as in
the mainstream films also the films don’t have the backing of a big
multi-million-dollar company so the film won’t have the same budget
as the Mainstream films. A film like Youth in Revolt is a filmthat
wasn’t as big as the Mainstream but still did well in the box office, it
has a big star name which brings some publicity but everyone else is
unheard of.
Niche
Niche films are films that don’t aim for a large audience compared to
the mainstream films, even though they aren’t aiming for a large
target audience some films still hit it off at the box office, such as
Slumdog millionaire which hit $377.9 million dollars, so from a film
2. that wasn’t really targeting a large audience it really did well at
the box office and earned the small company a lot of money.
Gender, Male or Female
Age, how hold is someone
Region, Where the person lives e.g North west
Sexual orientation, who the person is attracted to sex wise.

I posted a survey to see if the way the films
were advertised correctly and to see what
people thought of the film and their opinions. I
shall show the results now to analyse them
individually.
My first question was which filmdid you watch
out of the two available, between the two
films 4 watched Bridget jones and 2 watch
Blair witch. Showing Bridget jones was the
most popular out of the two.
3. My second question was; what sex are you? This
question was asked to find out the gender of the
people taking my survey this meant that I could
compare the gender of the people answering to
the answers I receive. 4 of the people that
answered were female, 2 were male. This explains
why Bridget jones was the most popular film as it
is made for females.
The next question was, what is your
favourite genre of movie. The options
were Romance, Comedy, Thriller and
horror. From the 6 people that filled out
the survey 1 chose romance, 4 chose
comedy and 1 chose thriller which is
strange because 2 people saw Blair
witch but no one likes horror films…
My 4th question was, did you enjoy the film, and as
you can see all 6 people chose Yes which is positive
meaning the films are all good films and made well.
My 5th question, and again as you can
see all 6 people were between the ages
of 15-19 meaning all the responses
were by the same age group, which is
good for the survey as it means age has
no factor of the different answers we
received.
4. To conclude I think my results show a wide range of answers and tells us all the facts we
need to know about how people feel about the film.
The text is in nice pink writing
which shows that the filmis a
girly film and is a romantic
comedy.
The title of the filmis in big
bold writing to attract the
person viewing the poster.
The poster also has a selling
like which is Relationship
status: beyond complicated.
A picture of the three
main characters gives
us a clue as to who is
in the fil, as there have
been a few Bridget
jones films, it shows
us he characters from
the first few films.
5. The back ground
is red, which is a
colour usually
linked with fear
and blood, so
that why its red,
also red catches
your eye so it
catches your
attention.
The text is in black
to show the film is a
dark filmand that
bad things happen,
there is a title line
saying There’s
something evil
hidden in the
woods, telling us it’s
a scary film.
The trees in the
poster tell us
that the filmis
based in the
words, also the
symbol of the
cross is
important
throughout the
film.
6. Movie Trailer analysis
Key areas are:
Setting
Narrative
Style character
500 Days of summer
500 days of summer states from the start of the trailer, that the filmis not a love story, it’s
the story of boy meets girl. The trailer shows the couple meeting and how they move
through their relationship. The trailer shows us both characters and how they first meet and
hit it off, it also shows his reaction when she tells him she likes his favourite band which tells
us the audience that he is already in love with her.
From this shot alone you can see how much he already likes her even though they have only
just met. The trailer shows us what he goes through from the good points to the bad. The
film is set in Boston. The characters are an innocent male called tom who is played by
Joseph Gordon Levitt who get messed around by a girl who doesn’t know what she wants
but still gives himeverything, the girl is called Summer Fin hence the title of the film, who is
played by Zooey Deschannel.
7. To conclude
Any form of creative work need a lot of research behind it, this is a
lot easier to do now with us having access to things such as the
internet and online, for example thing such as surveys and audience
profiling are a great way to gather research for their projects. There
are many other ways of collecting this data, they look at different
variables such as gender, sexuality etc. an example of the kind of
research the companies do is shown in this document with my
survey I posted about the two films we saw, which gave me data and
information about what people enjoy and like watching and doing
meaning when they go to make another film they can look back on
this data and change anything they need to such as different styles
and ideas.
