2. Cinematography
• The film opens with mid shots and close ups of a set of building which then
cut to panning shots of a neighbourhood. This allows us to understand that
the film is set in the city.
• We are then shown tilt pans of a typical American college building allowing
the audience to immediately recognise the film to be set in a college.
• Tracking shots are also used when we are introduce to characters in order
for us to get a sense of who they are and their personalities.
3. Mise-en-scene
• Bright, natural lighting is used throughout the opening of this film. Many teen
comedies use this as it easily allows all subjects to be in main focus as they are
equally important.
• Furthermore, majority of the characters are carrying around backpacks. These props
are necessary to use when setting the film in a school as it an essential item needed
by every school student.
• Other props such as mobile phones are constantly being used when we meet new
characters. This proper again creates the idea of a typical teenager character always
being on their mobile phone.
4. Editing
• Simple cuts are used to transition between different scenes. This
allows us to see more action in a short amount of time. Many teen
comedies use this form of editing as it keeps the target audience
interested as teen comedy audience tend to lose interest fast.
• Sans-serif titles have been embedded onto the film throughout the
whole opening as placing them on a plain background would again
appear to the audience as boring.
5. Representation
• Characters throughout this film are represented as mainly hanging
around in at least pairs or groups of 3.
• Stereotypical looks of characters are also created. For example;
those with skateboards are represented as typical skaters being
stressed in loose t-shirt, hoodie and trousers.
