2. Camera shot, angle and movement
• There are many close ups from in front of the characters which reveal the
person’s facial expressions.
• The camera is kept still
In this moment for
around 3 seconds to
allow the audience to
Observe the facial expressions in detail.
The director used a fixed camera shot in
Order to allow the audience to look in
Detail at the facial features of the girl to
Understand her depression. The fact that she is looking down away from the
audience implies that she wants to be alone and isolated, reinforcing her
depressed mood.
3. Lighting
The use of lighting is used to reveal the two sides of the girl, and this fits in to the
Story line as she wants to be a boy. The use of low key lighting is used to reveal the
Girl side of her as she is less happy and the use of high key lighting reveals how she
Feels as a boy as she is more happy in this position. This reinforces the storyline and
Reveals more about how the girl is feeling through the use of lighting. These
Techniques are necessary due to the fact that the films are short so these techniques
Are needed to help to reveal the storyline as there is not that much space for them
To show it.
4. Mise-en-scene
The use of the black hat is used to convey her wanting to be a boy. As
The black hat is stereotypically worn by boys and the fact that she hid
Her hair using the hat also reveals that she wants to be a boy as boys
stereotypically have short hair. This short film does not contain much action and not many short
films do this is due to the fact that it would be hard to reveal a storyline with a lot of action and
short films are often of a low budget. Furthermore, they are also often done in quite a short
amount of time and it would be hard to get successful footage of action in such a short time
filming.
