2. Brief history
The typical location of a noir film is normally set in abandoned areas, such
as warehouses, alleyways, empty streets etc.
Darkness, gloom and fog are normally used within film noir aswell, giving a
mysterious and dangerous feeling.
Costume aspects such as guns, trench coats, smart suits with ties,
cigarettes, red lipstick and smart polished shoes are also linked with the noir
genre.
Within the film, the regular use of canted angles and low lightning add to the
gloomy feeling of the noir genre.
Heavy, jazz music is normally used within noir films to give the film an edge
of sophistication but mystery as well.
3. Iconography in the trailer
• We represented noir through the
costume aspect of iconography, the
use of trench coats and smart shoes
add to the sophisticated and
professional way the characters are
presented.
• In the photo, the costume design was
to pay homage to the private detective
yet keep in touch with the modern era.
• Our protagonist is wearing a trench
coat but the skinny jeans with the belt
add a modern touch to the classic
outfit. Also, the gun pays homage to
the classic crime theme occurring
throughout the noir genre.
4. The use of low-key
lighting conforms
to the iconic low lit
shots in noir films
Use of
abandoned
locations
conforming to
settings found
in neo noir
films.
5. Iconography in the magazine
cover
• Although we didn’t want to pay
attention to the conventions found in
the noir genre as we were focusing on
the actor, key elements within the
cover identifies itself within the noir
genre.
• The use of the red and blue matches
the colour scheme within the trailer
and the poster, we juxtaposed the
colours on each side to add a chaotic
atmosphere. The use of the gun and
the black smoke conforms to the noir
genre as well.
• We had our character topless to make
it seem as if he had to go through
physical training to present this role.
6. Iconography in the poster
• Our poster can present the noir
genre from the fact that the main
feature image utilises lowkey
lighting. The red and the blue
also conforms to the colour
scheme in our promotional
package, we also used words to
mask his face to compliment our
complex plot and narrative.
• The use of the black background
goes very well with our title as
the definition of abyss is a
seemingly bottomless chasm.
