A group of Catholic plotters planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605 with gunpowder while King James I was opening Parliament, as Catholics were unhappy with his rule requiring them to be Protestant. Guy Fawkes was discovered in the cellar under Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder before he could light the fuse. He was arrested and tortured, but did not reveal the other plotters. The plotters were killed or executed, and Guy Fawkes was hanged for treason. People in England celebrated by lighting bonfires in remembrance of the failed Gunpowder Plot.
