Definition
3. What I took into consideration when
researching institutions which would
potentially distribute our film
4. Target Audience:
Our target audience is predominately males between the age range
of 15 and 21. With this in mind, when looking at the different
institutions which we would chose to distribute our film, I looked for
those with a younger vibe.
Our Type of Film:
The type of film which our group has created is a psychological
horror which is based around a woman slowly going insane. Our
opening sequence hints at the idea of the main character being
raped as a child. We believe that this is suitable as it does not
actually show the act.
5. Institutions:
When looking at different institutions, I concluded that larger institutions, such
as Fox and Universal would be majorly unrealistic. We liked the idea of
Hammer Films distributing our piece of media due to the fact that they
distribute many films which fall into the horror genre, as well as distributing
some indie style films, and we worked on the advice which they gave us
through email, however, this would still be unrealistic, therefore, when
researching into institutions which would potentially distribute our film, I
looked mainly into niche institutions as this would be more suitable for our
film, however, at the same time, I wanted to push this to the limit of how far
our film would be able to go in terms of institutions it would fit in with.
6. My Research
I began my research by first finding different low budget films with a
niche audience, such as Tangerine, which I believed would be a good
place to start. After researching into this film, I found that to edit, they
used ‘Final Cut Pro’ which is the same software as we used, which
further gave the impression that the distribution company of these
kinds of films would be reasonable to choose. From there, I went on
to search further into different institutions.
7. 1A productions:
One institution I looked at was 1A productions, which
is a company founded in 1992. This institution is a
small, but growing, company which has produced and
distributed a few small films, such as, in the face of
evil. This company has been noticed for it’s high
quality and inventive ideas. I liked the idea of this
institution as I believe our film would be able to fit in
amongst the indie and adventurous plots of these
films, due to ours developing some conventions, and
being an original plot.
8. Magnolia Pictures:
I decided to look into this institution as it is the
distributer on the film ‘Tangerine’ which led me
into my research. This company was founded in
2001 by Bill Banowsky and Eamonn Bowles.
Magnolia Pictures specialises in both foreign an
independent films. This company distributes films
such as ‘ABC’s to Death’. From researching, I
found that each film has its own specific vibe and
style. For this reason I think that our film could be
released by this institution.
9. Altitude Films:
Altitude Films mainly works of Indie films which are
distributed within the U.K. This is the institution
behind the film ‘Amy’ and the less known ‘The
Nightmare’. I liked the idea of this institution as it
has a variety of different films, each ranging in
different popularities. I believe that our film could
work well within this company as it would fit with
the uncommon plot and some of the original ideas.
Although I like this company and believe it would
be suitable, I am not sure if our film is of the same
standard of some of the films which have been
distributed from this institution.
10. Final Judgement
The media institution in which I have decided to
chose is Magnolia Pictures. I have chosen this
institution as I believe that it is best suited for our
film. As well as being realistic, the films which this
company have already distributed are each individual
and have a small budget. I feel that our of the
institutions I have research, this is the most realistic
and compatible with our film.
