Theme Ideas
Dark- One of the themes I might attempt to experiment with in my poster is a dark
theme which I will use darker colours and photo filters to highlight dangerous
characters and dark events. This then might be accompanied by a smoke or rain
overlay with a dark backdrop.
Red Wine- Cracked wine glass with the reflection of all of the characters in it
representing the blood of one of the characters who were murdered.
Bright- The sun shining behind the rising sun pub with the characters in front of it
creating a sunset effect to further explore the Soap Opera name ‘The Rising Sun’.
Silhouette- Have a silhouette of one of the characters holding a knife or broken glass
with the sun shining behind him further exploring the theme of the Rising Sun.
This additionally works well with the potential tagline ‘There is no light at the end of
this tunnel.’

Tagline- I would like the tagline to ideally represent the tone of the drama,
something dark and mysterious that won’t give too much of the plot away. The
language would be simple maybe playing on a famous phrase or set of words.
This tagline can be used as a means of ‘hooking’ the audience in for the rest of
the Soap Opera. I am thinking of positioning my tagline towards the top of the
page with the name of the Soap Opera in the lower portion.
Preferably I would like to create a portrait orientation poster, however within
the genre most posters are landscape.
“There’s no light at the end of this tunnel”- play on the words of a famous
quote ‘There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel’. This imparts that bad
events will happen within the Soap Opera that will have a lasting impact on all
of the characters.
“The sun won’t come out tomorrow”- This is a play on the words of the
famous song ‘The sun will come out tomorrow, which as well as working well
with the ‘sun’ theme will hint that the events of the Soap Opera will have a
lasting negative impact on the characters.

Images Needed- In order to go through with any of my ideas I will likely need images of
the setting of the Rising Sun pub and of each character. I should be able to create artificial
light behind the characters and just have their silhouettes in the foreground. This doesn't
give much a way about the Soap Opera and fits well with the theme. I can then
experiment with shadows on the ground to create a more realistic image. I will need to
manipulate the character images by filling their outlines in black to give the effect of the
sun shining behind them.

Synergy with social media- I will likely include a hashtag of a short phrase to create hype
for the soap opera and it will also allow fans of the Soap Opera to interact and share their
opinions on the new episodes of the soap opera. I could use a simple hashtag such as
#TheRisingSun or use a plot relevant hashtag such as #Whodidit? To create more mystery
around the Soap Opera. Additionally I will most likely include social media icons in one of
the corners to show which Social Media’s we are using to interact with fans.
Synergy with Magazine- I will try and use matching hashtags in both my magazine and
poster so users of the hashtag might accidentally stumble across both forms of marketing. I
could additionally include a link to the magazine’s website saying something like ‘For an
exclusive interview visit www.SoapCity.co.uk. This will increase readership and sale of the
magazine while also promoting the Soap Opera at the same time.
Point of call information- In order for the viewer to watch the Soap Opera it is important
that point of call information displaying the day and time the Soap Opera will be airing is
present on the poster. I will likely include this at the bottom of the page so it is the last
thing the audience will digest and remember.

Conclusion- In order to progress with the production of my
poster magazine I will need to take the desired pictures to
feature in the poster. I will then need to use Photoshop to
retouch the images and add special effects. Due to the lack of
characterization with silhouette's I will need to organise
different props to express different character traits. I will then
need to source a suitable font style to represent the Rising
Sun brand fort the tagline and other information. I will likely
use Pixelmator to produce this and then do the finishing
touches on Adobe Photoshop. This software is easy to use and
accessible at home so I can get the product created quickly
and easily.
