Participants come from 9 partner schools from: Bulgaria, Finland,France,
Greece, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Poland and Turkey.
24th May 2019 ( Friday)
On the 24th
May most of the countries arrived at the hotel. Everyone was very excited
and curious of what Varna is like. We saw that the city is very organized. Some of us
have never seen so many taxis in one place. It’s the first time for all of us to be here. The
city looks old but modern at the same time. All the participants stayed at the Sveta
Elena hotel and some could see the Black sea from their rooms. Everyone was shy, and
talked only with his or her group at the beginning. But after dinner we sat together and
we started talking to each other. We began to get to know each other. The students and
teachers from Varna were preparing for the arrival of guests at the same time. They
made the folders, the Erasmus corner. They prepared the computers and all the
necessary materials to be used.
25th May 2019 (Saturday)
At 9 am we arrived at the school in Varna. Bulgarian students welcomed us with
traditional bread. School Principal, Mrs Veselina Toteva and the project coordinator
from the Bulgarian school, Mrs Donka Georgieva gave us a warm welcome. 15 minutes
later all the students were supposed to make a presentation about their schools. After
that we had a quick coffee break. We continued with ice-breaking activities prepared by
the German team. The first one was human bingo, it was a great opportunity to get to
know our partners. Next we played a game called “this or that”, where we had to
choose between two options. It was great fun. At 11:45 we had a lecture prepared by
Mrs Hanna Skowronska, the topic was about identifying weak and strong promoters of
2. sustainable learning . We had the crosswords in pairs to build topic vocabulary and also
learn how to work in teams. After a quick lesson we had to work in groups and together
decide which promoters of sustainable learning were weak and strong and we defined
strategies which are used for efficient learning. The lecture gave us the insight into the
basics of the project.
After lunch we split into five groups. The title of the workshop was “Team building.
Intercultural activities. Sculptures” lead by Mr. Ivaylo Stamatov. Each group was given a
task to make a sculpture from clay, which would represent their expectations from the
project. Most of the sculptures represented friendship and connection between the
participants. We had a lot of fun. After that all groups presented their sculptures. Then
we got “Exit tickets” to improve on our feedback culture. We made up some conclusions
and reflected on what we had learned.
26th May 2019 (Sunday)
We arrived at school at 9:00. Both teachers and students were divided into 2 groups: A
and B. Group A had a lesson of journalism with Ms Tarja Sanila from Finland and group
B had a lesson of photography with Mr Dimitris Antonoglou from Greece. During the
photography lesson we learnt the basic rules of taking professional photos and got
some tips on capturing images. We had an opportunity to practise what we had learnt
and have fun with people in our group. Then we took a short break and at 10:30 the
groups switched topics.
3. Before every lesson we were given a K-W-L Chart. We filled in the first two columns of
the chart at the beginning and after a lesson we filled in the last one and we gave
feedback to the teacher. At 12:00 we had time to reflect on our K-W-L charts, discuss
how to share our responsibilities concerning the report and then we had lunch at 13:00.
Today we learnt that journalism is very important and it is one way to learn new things
and to know how the world or other people in the world are behaving. Sometimes we
hear news that is not totally true or even real at all (like jokes), so we have to be aware
of this, and we also have to know which are the right sources, so that we can be well
informed. Instead of talking about photography we have learnt how to take good
photographs, thanks to some tricks like having a good brightness, good materials but
also a good background. We did an activity that required us to play with lights to create
a contrast between lights and shadows so as to discover the object in a better light. We
appreciate to discover new things and also the way that John Hattie’s strategies are
included in these activities. In conclusion, this morning, we learnt more about the real
meaning of Journalism but also that taking a picture is not only the images but it is also
about the memories that we want to keep and the feelings that we want to express, for
us and the subject of the pictures. We would like to repeat this experience again!
After the lunch we were given the task to write the first part of the report in 5 groups.
We shared our impressions and discussed the way of writing it. Some time after that
we presented our work to the others. We had final conclusions on what was going on
and we had to fill the exit tickets to express our feelings. After that we had a lesson of
decoupage, the first time was not that easy but we had a lot of fun. At about 20 pm we
had a party. Every team made a presentation of something that represents their
country. We danced, sang a songs and had some games. It was an incredible and
different experience.
The evening we started with a dinner. Then a famous
singer from Bulgaria gave a performance. After that
each country presented their traditional dances.
4. For example, Turkey showed a dance called “delilo” , Polish team presented “Belgijka”
and the Greek group also showed a traditional dance. Also the French group presented
“Cotton eye Joe” dance. Italian girls sang two songs titled “Lasciatemi cantare” and
“Volare” and later we all sang together popular songs like “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. At the
end Rodrigo from Portugal played the guitar songs called “Zombie” and with Sara from
Italy “Shallow”. The German team prepared a quiz and some games for us. At the same
time we had a chance to try special food from other countries like Turkish coffee, orcik
and German gummy bears. Before we went to our rooms we had played a game called
“Who am I?”. We had a lot of fun during this party. It has been a fantastic experience.
27th May ( Monday)
After arriving at school we divided into two groups: group A went to attend the
workshop “Incorporating ICT tools: Can ICT use support my learning processes? If yes,
how? Which applications are helpful, which are hindering according to Hattie’s results?”
and group B joined the workshop “Enhancing deep learning through concept mapping”.
At the workshop of ICT tools we used applications like Kahoot, GeoGebra, Memrise and
Ck 12. We learned something about quadratic function and Pythagorean Theorem. At
the workshop of the concept mapping we used a site “Popplet” to make our own
concept map. And after the break we changed groups. Then we went to lunch.
After lunch, at 13:30 we all attended the presentation about Jigsaw method led by Mrs
Daria Osińska and Polish students. Then we used the method ourselves and saw how
effective it really is: we were divided into 4 groups, each group had a mathematical trick
to master, and then teach other students who don’t know it, how it works. After the
exercise we had a short break. Then we came back to the auditorium and reflected on
what we had learnt that day using the Triangle, Square, Circle method. Then everybody
5. had time for some final conclusions and filled in the exit tickets they received from the
teacher.
It is worth mentioning that on this day we were visited and interviewed by journalists
from the Bulgarian National TV. The coverage from our meeting is available here:

28th May 2019 (Tuesday)
We started the day at 9 am with workshops where students reflect on their studying
habits and think about what best works for them. After a short break we divided into
two groups. First group had a Bulgarian lesson we learned the alphabet and some
useful words. The other group had a lesson about metacognitive strategies. We tried to
solve math problems and we talked about a variety of strategies that we can use. After
that the groups changed. Than we had lunch. At 3 pm we went to the Archeological
museum were we had to do a quiz about the past of Varna. For example, we learned
that the name of the city of Varna during the Roman period was Odessos.
.
After that we had a tour of the historic city center with a tour guide. That was the most
interesting thing we had seen so far. We ate something and enjoyed the beautiful views.
And then we got back to the hotel. The German team went shopping and the Italian,
Polish and Portuguese sat in the lobby getting to know each other better.
6. 29th May 2019 ( Wednesday)
We arrived at 9:00 am at the school and we went to the auditorium to listen to the
presentation of the Portuguese, then the Greeks started to sing a song about bullying, it
was beautiful. After that, we started to reflect on the visit at the museum yesterday,
answering questions from the questionnaire that the guide gave us. Then we split
into two groups, the first group had to create a board game for VT4P, while the second
group was creating a poster about school development through students’ eyes.
After the break we switched the groups and then we went to the bistro for lunch. We came back
to school almost at 13:50, and we had to present our work, then we wrote letters to the VT4P
team to thank them for all the work that we’ve done. After this, Bulgarians came with a surprise,
that was a soap with a shape of a rose and also they made a chocolate cake.
Then we finished our daily reports.
*Emotional part coming*, we came back to the hotel crying because it was the last day!!
We want to thank the whole Bulgarian team for hosting us and all partners for creating a friendly
environment for our VT4P project collaboration!!!
