Motion and time study are scientific methods developed to improve productivity and reduce costs. Motion study examines work methods to determine the most efficient way to complete tasks, while time study measures how long it takes average workers to finish jobs. Both aim to establish standards and schedules to optimize processes.

2. History
Motion and Time Study Defined
Objectives of motion study
Time study types
Uses of time study
Details about Motion and Time Study
Example
3. Frank B. Gilbreth, Lillian M Gilbreth
-1885, he begun to develop motion study.
Gilbreth invented motion study designed to
determine the best way to complete a job
Frederick W. Taylor
-1881, he started to develop time study
Taylor designed Time Study; it measures how long
it takes a worker to complete a task.
5. Motion Study is designed to determine
the best way to complete a repetitive job
6. Time Study measures how long it takes
for an average worker to complete a
task at a normal pace
7. Objective of motion study
1-to eliminate wastage of time
2-to reduce fatigue and boredom of work
3-to find the best way of doing job
4-to have more effective utilization of
material,machines
5-to improve the design of work place
layout
8. Time study
1- manual time :handling of tools, machines
and material
2-mental time:time taken by the wortker for
thinking over some operations
3-mashining time:indicates time taken by
mashines in doing its share of wark
9. Uses of time study
1-it is useful in determining the standard
time
2-its useful to estimate the cost of
product accurately
3-it helps in production control
4-it helps in predicting accurately as to
when the work will be completed and
hence customers can be produced to
take delivary on a fixed date
10. 5- by time study technique , it can be
found that how many machines ,an
operator can run
11. Motion and time study helps management
determine how much is produced by workers
in a specific period of time, therefore making
it easier to predict work schedules and
output. Motion and Time Study is a scientific
method designed by two different people for
the same purpose, to increase productivity
and reduce unit cost. The two methods
evaluate work and try to find ways to improve
processes.
14. Motion Study
Improve methods
It measures distance, or how much you move to
do a job, and how much you get done in a
period of time
Time study
Establish standards
Looked at the average time it took an average
worker
15. Estimating
Performance records
Stopwatch time study
Standard data
Time study formulas
Work sampling schedules
Cycle Time: The period required to complete
one cycle of an operation; or to complete a
function, job, or task from start to finish.

problem)?
Why is there a problem?
How can it be solved?
Which alternative is better?
