Your genome contains all the instructions to make you and is found in nearly every cell of your body. It is made up of DNA, which takes the shape of a twisted ladder and contains genetic code in the sequence of chemical base pairs. This DNA code is read in groups of three bases to produce amino acids and ultimately proteins. While genes make up about 2% of the genome and code for proteins, most of the genome is noncoding DNA that helps control and regulate genes or is made up of repeated sequences of unknown function. Small differences in DNA sequences make each person unique.
