Academic Development Day
2. Good day, and welcome.
Thank you for being part of the session.
For the next hour, let’s each consider ourselves as being
our own primary business. The money maker.
You are the primary tool, so hopefully you may be able to
use this session as one of many other springboards, for
developing your best asset in various ways.
Our focus today:
Going Online Professionally
3. Some background
We need to realise that creativity and innovation are
essential tools for any of us looking to truly compete
in a developing reality.
• The ways that we learn today are radically different to
some of the ways in which we adopted knowledge
before.
• How many times have you consulted a dictionary
lately, instead of going online and finding the word
online?
4. The technologies that generate these changes are
still changing themselves, so creative learning
styles are the way to keep abreast of those
changes.
You may not learn it in a classroom; you might not
have learnt it at school.
BUT
Now and ahead, you need to become a self
sustaining teaching and learning unit, for
academic, career and social purposes.
5. You also need to reflect yourself professionally.
Hey, you’re a model...
6. Your task is
To fill in the blanks according to what is required for reaching
your career aim as we go through the following questions
To engage in imagining experiential activities while a student
or as a professional in the field
To consider how to generate, store, reflect and constantly
update employer/trainer feedback on your abilities
This is also known as?
7. Please write down the questions and start answering
The Basics About the BoM
1. What is your desired career choice?
2. What do you need to fully achieve your career
aim/purpose?
3. How long does it take to qualify for the ‘academic
part’?
8. 4. What skills do you possess that will make
achieving your career aim/purpose possible?
5. Skills vs Attributes. Yours?
6. What do you still need in order to get where
you want to be?
9. 7. What do you already possess, or
what’s already been achieved, out of
these identified requirements?
8. Finally: what’s left to do?
10. Now, the next task
is to start the process of reflecting on:
potential for getting work;
potential to apply for internships, for funding or
other development opportunities available and
advertised online
11.
12. Why LinkedIn You Ask?
“... consider this: According to the Pew Research
Centre, LinkedIn usage is especially high among
the educated (bachelor’s degree holders and
up), and high earners (those making $75,000 a
year or more) — exactly the types of people
with whom you’d want to connect
professionally...”
Thus: also the types able to hire you...
